Classic Country: Great Duets.......2007-01-22
This is one of the best I've heard if you like country & duets... Absolutely wonderful!
Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26
These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

Customer Reviews:
Two of the great ladies of jazz, relaxed and having fun together........2005-10-03
This unusual CD features the great Betty Carter performing live with the great Carmen McRae, both having fun as they share the spotlight. Betty's voice is higher and sweeter than Carmen's lower, stronger, and more assertive voice, but together they sound like extensions of each other, almost alteregos, as they interact, engage in delightful patter, and joke and obviously mug with the audience. This is a CD for which one yearns for a video, since these two megastars of jazz are so in sync that it's sometimes difficult to tell which one is singing in these unusually long tracks.
In all tracks it is the singers themselves who are the focus. Accompaniment is kept to a minimum--at most, just the piano, bass, and/or drum--and frequently McRae and Carter sound as if they are singing a capella. "Stolen Moments (You Belong to Her)" features wonderful harmony and impeccable timing, as both singers hit their notes exactly on cue. "But Beautiful," slower and more ballad-like, shows both singers alternating the solo line, ending with surprising high notes and perfect harmony. In one of the longest songs, "Am I Blue?" McRae begins with a solo, then turns the mike to Carter halfway through, before they join and swing together for the remainder of this nearly seven-minute track.
One of the best songs on the CD is "Sometimes I'm Happy," which begins with Carter singing to a bass accompaniment (by Jim Hughart), switching to scat and wild improvisation by McRae, and ending with Carter singing scat. In fact, their ability to sing scat together and alternately is one of the best aspects of this CD. In "Isn't It Romantic?" these two stars obviously enjoy harmonizing, which they continue with "Sophisticated Lady," which alternates solos and then combines. The high point of the CD is "It Don't Mean a Thing," however. From the beginning, in which they sing together accompanied by a drum (Wynard Harper), then piano (Eric Gunnison), the two have fun alternating scat turns, before the drum solos, and all go wild.
As McRae and Carter exchange patter and interject comments within their songs, they are obviously playing to their audience, which responds audibly on the recording, one of the great advantages of live performances. Bright, fun, and relaxed, this CD shows two of the great ladies of jazz interacting and sharing the spotlight as the audience roars its approval. Don't miss this one. N Mary Whipple
A hellish match made in heaven!.......2004-04-21
I love Billie. I love Sarah. I love Ella. I love Dinah. But if I were on a desert island, I would have to have the music of Carmen and Betty! They both had the wonderful combination of heart AND technique. They make you live the story within the song as they demonstrate monster creativity in reconstructing/recreating a song. The only song that seems under par is Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". The pitch strikes me as flat and i suspect that was mostly Betty's problem because she often intentionally or otherwise seemed to have a ptich problem or a different sense of pitch that was right for her. She could really sound flat to my ears from time to time but...
Both women had an exceptional balance of interpretation of musicianship... awesomely so. Listen to Duke Ellingtons' "Sophisticated Lady". Such humor and joy on this set. Listen to the way Carmen sings: "Diamonds Shining...". It is dark and glistening! Listen to Betty's interprtation of "Where or When". Originally this song was performed in a light operatic style. Betty does a Brilliant reconstruction of an this old chestnut.as she takes it to another place of timelessness. She makes it live again. Almost like you are hearing it for the first time.
This is not a "perfect" album. It is magical! It touches in deep places that make you glad you were a live to witness such beauty.
Early on in the set they joke about how nobody imagined that these two could ever get along long enough to do anything together. Carmen asserts that they did it because they were smart as foxes. And they were for awhile. Within two years of doing this recording they were infact in an ugly fued. None the less they left a legacy of beauty and creativity.
Yeah, get this one!
Two of the Greats!!.......2004-02-07
Carmen McRae & Betty Carter deliver a great live set of jazz and fun, both ladies giving each other room to shine and both singing together as a duet should be done! not trying to out do each other! i would have loved for them to have recorded more duet lp's, but i'm so glad they gave us this wonderful cd!!!
I must be missing something.......2002-03-03
I picked this up at the local used CD store for $1 figuring I'd found a bargain. After a couple listens, I traded it right back to them. I don't know why this CD gets such high ratings, both here and in the jazz guides. The sound is muddied, the singing far from serious, and the banter hard to discern.
It reminds me somewhat of another very overrated CD....Tony Bennett MTV Unplugged.
I don't begrudge either Carmen or Betty their place in jazz history....but this CD is really a poor example of that of which they are capable.
They Could Have Done it Better but ... What Matters!.......2000-07-10
This is a CD re-issue with a repertoire more complete than the first CD edition. Notably, this new CD offers "Love Dance" as composed by Brazilian Ivan Lins and brightly sung by Carmen McRae. Above all, there is master voice and performance command here. To be listened to on your knees.

Verrett Is a National Treasure.......2003-11-11
The two tracks of these women singing Rossini and Bellini are more than worth the price of this CD! I have an extensive collection of operatic LPs and CDs and have heard many others sing all the duets on this CD. These two women do it best! If you can recall seeing Olympic ice-skater Scott Hamilton in his prime, imagine TWO perfect voices PRECISELY hitting their "marks" (notes) in a beautifully prancing, rapid succession the way Hamilton's feet used to do! And Diva Verrett, now about 70, is currently passing her craft on to others at U Michigan as a voice professor! I only wish that more of her recordings were available now. If you are new to bel canto singing, this is an excellent CD to begin with. If you are a more experienced listener, this CD belongs in your collection!
Caballe & Verrett dazzle in bel canto, Verdi AND verismo!.......2003-03-26
One thing that is enjoyable with this CD is that it includes duets from operas of different styles. Here we have bel canto, late Verdi and verisimo.
It is amazing how exquisitely these two ladies sing all the different styles! Moreover, they feel every word they sing. Other reviewers compared this duo with the Sutherland-Horne one. I admire both Joan and Marilyn but they show little understanding of what they are singing; they are too busy impressing us with their high notes and fast coloratura.
The best moments are the bel canto duets (if only there was more). Caballe is unsurpassed in this area. Try to get her complete recordings (Norma, Il Pirata, Lucrezia Borgia). Verrett too had a big success in this repertoire. Pity they didn't record the Stuarda duet as well. The Barcarolle is ethereal, the best I've ever heard while the Aida duet passionate and moving, just as it should be. Caballe and Verrett don't really have verisimo voices but the two selections on this CD are enjoyable.
I join the praise of the previous reviewers and highly recommend this recording!
Top-quality duet singing.......2003-03-11
This recording is fantastic! Both Caballé and Verrett are great. Caballé has her lush, powerful voice. Verrett has her dark, rich, equally powerful voice. The two sing very well and are involved dramatically. The duet from "Semiramide" is great. However, Sutherland and Horne do it better. Their coloratura is cleaner and more spectacular than Caballé's and Verrett's. The duet from "Anna Bolena" is done well. However, I prefer Verrett's version with Sills. Sills is dynamite as Bolena and she has a top register equal to that of Verrett's. The duet from "Norma" is fantastic. In the case of this duet, I find Caballé and Verrett to be every bit as good as Sutherland and Horne. The duet from "Les Contes d'Hoffman" is great. Their voices blend beautifully. The duet from "Aïda" is done very well. Verrett is a subtly menacing Amneris, which is quite effective. The duet from "Madama Butterfly" is terrific. Caballé did not sing Butterfly very well, but here, she is magnificent. Verrett is a sympathetic Suzuki. I don't think she ever sang the role on stage. The last duet is from "La Gioconda". No complaints here. Both singers are in top form. I wish they had included the Confrontation Scene from "Maria Stuarda". All they needed to do was to cut out the lines of the other singers in the scene. Caballé and Verrett were great together on stage as Maria Stuarda and Regina Elisabetta, respectively.
This duet album is the perfect compliment to "Belleza Vocale" with Hei-Kyung Hong and Jennifer Larmore.
Absolutely Magnificent.......2002-10-08
Of all the great opera solo and duet recital discs (Jussi Bjoerling singing almost any Verdi or Puccini; Sutherland/Horne in Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti; Fritz Wunderlich, Edda Moser or Margaret Price in Mozart; [name your favorites]), this is probably the most thrillingly beautiful I've ever heard. The gorgeous sound of these 2 great voices and the almost palpable excitement they generate are as glorious now as when I first heard this on LP about 25 years ago. Whenever I'm trying to convince a non-lover of opera what he or she is missing, this is my ultimate weapon when all else has failed -- it always works!
WOW!!! These women are butter!.......2002-02-03
I bought this CD based on the reviews and am thrilled with it. I agree that the price is worth it just for the The Tales of Hoffman: Barocelle. This song is exquisite and the voices blend so perfectly that it is the most moving piece of music that I've experienced. Check this out!!!

all past their primes but still a thrill.......2003-06-30
All of the singers are past their prime here. Dame Joan must have lost at least half her formidable voice. And her coloratura has slowed down to a slow stroll. You have to hear her when she was the greatest singer the world had ever seen.
Pavarotti and Horne are slightly better. But they are also disappointing to my discriminating ears. But if you never heard them when they were supreme, you may still be extremely impressed. They are that good that even when they're past their prime, they still have valid voices.
If you never heard Dame Joan when she ruled the operatic world, don't buy this, she will be discredited.
However, even if Dame Joan is way past her prime here, if you know how she sounded when she was the Queen of opera, it's still a must buy. Because even though her voice is half gone, she's still Prima Donna Assoluta. But only buy this if you know how she's supposed to sound.
Hello! Anybody in there????.......2001-05-21
Hey, publishers, this is too much excellent performance not to be available on video. Any genuine opera lover will buy the video tape/DVD of this live recording.
The Amazing Trio.......2000-12-14
I like this recording very much, but I must say that the tape, which I bought in 1981, had a "warmer" sound to it. I also remeber watching the live performanc on television, and even the best recording can not capture the excitment of that evening. I disagree with the reviewer who said that all three were past their prime. I thought they were all in good if not excellent voice. I agree with the reviewer who said Sutherland is not in top form, but who cares.Even at less than her best she is better than anyone else! I would not miss having this recoring in my collection!
Fantastic drama heard here.......2000-01-05
This is a wonderful recording of arias with an excellent set of performers. The drama and emotion felt in this CD is extremely moving. Horne does a fantastic job of playing her alto roles, and Pavarotti is in his usual good singing voice. My problem here lies with Dame Joan. As I am an almost diehard fan of her work, I found it dissapointing listening to her in this recording. It is obvious that she was past her prime at this point and we no longer hear her infamous coloratura singing. The acrobatics are no longer there, and the high notes are forced and not that high at all. However, this recording is very good, if only for its star power and fantastic theatrics.
Bravi, Sutherland, Pavorotti, Horne.......1999-07-04
All three singers past their amazing primes in this LIVE recording, but I still must have it because of it's historical status. We have three of the greatest singers of this or any other century on the stage at the same time! Just thrilling in the ensembles. Buy this CD!!!

Ravishing performances of Fine Handel Duets.......2006-05-30
This is a lovely CD. There have been several discs devoted to Handel's Italian duets, both the non-dramatic chamber genre and the operas - in the latter case, notably the superb Patrizia Ciofi/Joyce Di Donato 'Amor e gelosia' (Virgin Veritas) - but this is the first I've run across comprising only ones from English-language works. It's a well-chosen and -sequenced selection from a dozen works, ten of them plotted 'sacred dramas,' plus one number each from the 'Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne' and 'Alexander's Feast'; ending the program with a relatively downbeat duet from 'Esther' is an unexpected and inspired stroke. Soprano Carolyn Sampson and counter-tenor Robin Blaze sing ravishingly and blend beautifully, and are stylish and sensitive interpreters. They receive excellent support from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Nicholas Kraemer. The more overtly dramatic duets from 'Belshazzar,' 'Theodora' and 'Saul' may not pack quite the intense punch of other versions - no doubt Sampson and Blaze would go further in specific characterization in the context of a complete performance of those works - but that's an observation, not a reservation. I do not own an SACD player, so I can't report on that aspect of the disc, but the sound on a standard CD player is excellent. Complete texts. Highly recommended.

Amazon.com essential recording
American soprano Barbara Bonney has emerged as one of the most engaging interpreters of Mozart's heroines on the stage today. Indeed, the selections offered here--culled from various full-length recordings over the 1990s--are about more than beautiful singing: Bonney's portrayals of four Mozart heroines are rich in vivid characterization and emotional nuance and are models in their own way of "vocal acting." Bonney makes a particularly appealing Susanna with her natural, unforced sound and remarkably poetic phrasing (the Figaro selections include the two new arias Mozart later interpolated for a favorite singer, which are rarely heard in stagings of the opera). Gorgeously floated pianissimos and a deliciously lilting legato give her Zerlina a knowing, sexually charged charm, while her Pamina is both vulnerable and radiant. And, unlike the dime-a-dozen Mozart excerpt albums, this one provides not only arias but duets (with Hakan Hagegard's characterful Count and Don Giovanni and Bryn Terfel's Masetto, among others) and a few ensemble scenes. Most of the selections are conducted with grace by period-instrument maven Arnold Östman; two selections from La clemenza di Tito under Christopher Hogwood will tempt the listener to take a closer look at these artists' complete recording of a neglected Mozart masterpiece. --Thomas May

Nice, but quiet.......2004-11-13
I bought this CD about a year and a half ago and play it all the time, but I do have to turn up the volume, especially in the car (which is a lousy place to listen to serious music anyway). I still prefer Bonney's "Deh vieni" to the other recordings I have, including Bartoli and Upshaw. I love the "Sull'aria," something omitted from a Nozze Highlights CD (also featuring Bonney) I also own. If you like Bonney, you'll probably love the recording.
"Deep" voice for Susanna or Pamina??? Get off the juice!!!.......2004-02-21
I don't know which Mozart one of the previous reviewer was professing to "worship" but it certainly isn't one I was raised listening to.
Turn up the hearing aid, if you must, but leave your Wagnerian tastes at home when you approach these Mozart roles being sung properly by the proper voice.
Mozart + Bonney=Outstanding!.......2000-01-24
I consider Barbara Bonney to be the ultimate Mozart soprano, and that's it! Her beautiful and lyrical soprano is just perfect for the music. Her performance in Die Zauberflöte with Östman/Drottningholm is the best I have ever heard in that opera. The music of Mozart doesn't really require any Wagner-sopranos with huge vibrato and tasteless phrasing. No, it's more suitable for the lovely and brilliant sopranos like Barbara Bonney!
FEEBLE VOICE!.......1999-11-13
I read all the reviews and since they were all favourable I bought this CD. Alas! I was deeply disappointed. All these laudatory comments turned out to be just pompous array of praises. Barbara Bonney has clear, but weak voice. She is whispering something indistinctly, not singing. I worship Mozart and still I was not moved by this rendition.I wonder whether at a real performance the audience in the rear seats ever hear what she is singing. These Mozart's arias are really great but they must be performed by great artists as well. A diva possessed of deep ,clear, strong voice will do the job perfectly.
Solid Mozart singing from opera's leading current soubrette.......1999-10-03
This cd has excellent recorded sound, and Barbara Bonney's light, sweet soprano is heard at its freshest. For young sopranos studying Mozart roles, it would be a valuable purchase. Bonney sounds most at home in the Magic Flute selections where her obvious love for the music is really apparent. I give only 4 stars however, because I personally prefer a bigger voice in these roles like Swenson. But this should not deter Mozart and light soprano fans as diva prefences are all a matter of personal taste.

Two of the greatest.......2005-10-21
I had the honor to see these two greats perform in Adriana, that performance got my American-born wife hooked on opera.
I am convinced that both of them are in heaven singing with the angels at this time.
A Legendary Partnership.......2005-05-04
I give this recording 5 stars knowing full well that it captures these two legendary artists in the twilight of their careers. Both were past 50 when this disk was recorded; and more significantly, both had been singing for nearly thirty years. The latter fact is all-too evident at times.
Yet what other famed duo--past or present--could have recorded so late in their careers and pulled off a performance with such elan as to suggest grandeur, even if only rarely actually producing it? I can think of none. Here, Tebaldi and Corelli are still Grand Opera personified. If time and attrition are evident in virtually every note and phrase these two sing, equally evident are the ear-markings of the sovereign performer, the consummate artist. Always there is the glimmer of the past. The old thrill. And THAT warrants 5 stars any day.
Interesting but not what it could have been .......2005-04-02
The Tebaldi-Corelli partnership was one of the most electrifying in the operatic world. Their ringing Italian voices brought down any theatre and people who've experienced them live say that recordings have never been able to capture the size of their voices and the effect they had in the theatre. Even on recordings however, their Italian squillo voices have always excited me and the fact that they never recorded a complete opera together in studio is certainly a shame.
These duets were recorded a few years before their retirement and the decline in their voices is obvious. Tebaldi is often hard-toned, especially above the staff but the middle register remains distinctly warm and as always firm. Corelli on the other hand can still blast out the high notes but the sound has lost its freshness while his lisp is at its worst here. Having said that, I doubt there are singers today who can deliver the excitement heard here.
La Gioconda and Adriana Lecouvreur were Tebaldi's biggest successes in the '60s and Corelli was her most spectacular partner during those performances. As in the Aida excerpt, in the La Gioconda scene Tebaldi sings the mezzo part for a change and it certainly is a treat. She brings a regal style to these roles, which is most appropriate.
Francesca da Rimini is a role Tebaldi always wanted to perform, and was actually supposed to in '57, but sadly the plans were never realised. The long scene they recorded here is passionate and makes us wish for a full recording of the opera. A tribute to Zandonai who was one of the first who recognised young Tebaldi's potential. I doubt the tenor and soprano ever sang Manon Lescaut together so the long duet gives us and idea of what such a performance could have been.
As part of the battle between recording labels, Phillips desperately tried to resuscitate two other stars by attempting a similar "duets" recording just a few months after this one. Sadly, the results were not good enough to keep the recording on the shelves.
While not what it could have been, seasoned Tebaldi-Corelli fans will still want this recital especially for the rarities.
Not Quite Their Best, But Still a Treasure.......2004-05-15
Remember all those old LP's that maybe your parents or grandparents owned? You were always told not to touch, but you disobeyed the order, and thumbed through the collection. You find a great operatic recording, with the stars on the jacket that seemed larger than life. You take the record out of the jacket, carefully place it on the phonograph, and fall in love with opera. Then of course, you carefully place the record back in the jacket, and few weeks later Mom or Dad, or Grandma or Grandpa listen to the record and can't understand how it got scratched. They know it is you, so you run and hide, but all will later be forgiven when you join them in listening to a Saturday afternoon radio broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Now you're an adult and you remember those great old recordings from opera's golden and know that with all of today's technology and wonderful recording artists, they somehow do not measure up to those of yesteryear? Well, now you can rest assured because someone at Decca must have had the same childhood experiences and has started releasing some of these great recordings in its CLASSIC RECITALS series.
This recording of operatic duets by greats Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli was recorded in 1973, when both were beginning to be past prime, yet it is still a gem. There are only five duets, three of which are from operas and roles associated with both performers: Manon and Des Grieux in MANON LESCAUT, Francesca and Paolo in FRANCESCA DA RIMINI, and Adriana and Maurizio in ADRIANA LECOUVREUR. These duets are performed well, as one would expect from singers of their caliber. The treasures are the duets from LA GIOCONDA and AIDA. Normally Tebaldi was the soprano in these operas and exceptional as both Gioconda and Aida. Yet in the duets, her voice is more mezzo and she sings Laura and Amneris respectively.
The recording is packaged nostalgically which Decca hopes will give it a retro appeal. The only drawback is that the liner notes are in very small, almost unreadable font. Perhaps with a magnifying glass, the text can be read, but at a legendary recording at a discount price is a bargain any day, even with a few slight packaging flaws.
