On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2007-04-25
These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.
Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23
This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.
Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02
I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.
Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10
Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!
Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22
Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

Awesome stuff!!.......2007-06-03
Alright, you have to agree that "some" songs remind one of AC/DC, but for me, like other Metal/Hard-Rock lovers, "Rhino Bucket" add's a touch of sleaze that just sets it on fire!! "Sights Too High" gets this collection fired off...great song! Followed by "Been There, Done That" and "Nothing To Loose". "One Night Stand" is here as a "LIVE" recording, as well as, "Beat To Death Like A Dog", "Hey There", "Ride The Rhino", and "Train Ride"! The "LIVE" songs will peal the paint off your walls!!! The original demo's that round out the album are just what you remember....awesome!! Anything "Rhino Bucket" is a must have addition to any collection! Whether you are new to the "Rhino", or a schooled veteran, pick this one up and throw a party!!!!
A Great Collection Of Rare Tracks.......2007-02-18
As all Rhino Bucket fans know, all of their albums are out of print, but their new one. If You don't want to spend the all the time & money trying to find those albums, then this one is definately for you. It contains the original demos, plus live versions of some of there greatest songs like One Night Stand & Hey There. This would also be good if you've never heard them before, it would give you a kinda greatest hits if you will. This is really a great album and i know any person who likes AC/DC will not be dissapointed.

Gilding the Lilly.......2007-02-05
The selection of songs for this cd is excellent, however unable to leave well enough along they include overblown intros, restarts, embellishments etc making the original tune almost unrecognizable. The arranger should be shot.

Beautifully patriotic. Even if your not British.

Album Description
Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.
Customer Reviews:
Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Kate Wolf's songs still ring true years after her death. This loving tribute contains 14 heartfelt covers culled from the repertoire of the singer-songwriter, who died of leukemia in 1986. From Kathy Mattea's serene opener, "Give Yourself to Love," to Terry Garthwaite's near-tears closer, "Thinking About You," it's apparent that all involved in the project (from the contributing artists to producer Nina Gerber, who collaborated with Wolf through much of her career) hold Wolf in the highest esteem. Highlights here include Dave Alvin's gruff "These Times We're Living In," Nanci Griffith's mournful "Friend of Mine," and Rosalie Sorrels's sweet-as-an-angel version of "In China or a Woman's Heart." --Alexandra Russell
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Tribute CD.......2005-12-05
"Treasures Left Behind" is meant to be a tribute to the late folk-singer Kate Wolf. It's full of her beautiful music, sung by other artists who were either moved by Kate Wolf the person, or by her music.
One of the things I love about this collection is that it includes an insert with a lot of great stories about Kate Wolf, as well as the words to each song.
I found all of the songs on this CD to be both awesome and thought provoking. So, I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys folk-type music - these songs have "real" meaning...
Kate Wolf Music, Kate Wolf People.......2004-02-05
Look at all the musicians here and who they are and what they mean. Go on any page for any Kate Wolf recording and see how many people feel moved to write about Kate and what she meant to them. You are smart if you read all those comments, smarter if you get as much Kate Wolf and her friends as you can, and are lucky, blessed to have found Kate even though she is no longer with us on Earth, she is here with her music, with the spirit that she has inspired.
Kate's "Red Tailed Hawk" will always be inscribed on my brain its beauty its realness, its aptness, and the reality of the golden rolling hills of California. So perfect and beautiful even though I never had a tape or LP or a CD of it until 12 years after it came out, until after we lost Kate. Still its power comes to me as it did on an old radio sitting in an Oakland apartment, the signal fighting its way all the way up from KFAT ("because we need the bucks) down in Gilroy.
The vision of California that Kate weaves on all her records is preciseless, unique real, and a treasure even if much of it is sweeten myth.
I feel so bad that I lived in San Fransisco and Oakland and travelled up and down California and the West Coast in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Kate was doing her best work and only saw her sing once. There was something to her voice that gets through to me, something pure. Part of Kate's magic is the superb arrangements and backup that got from the musical genius Nina Gerber her main accompaniest. Nina is now out there solo alot. If you like guitar and this kind music check out Nina too.
Oh Kate, why didn't we realize how much of a golden treasure you were when you were among us. In her memory think of a performer you might miss like we all miss Kate--well that isnt fair because thats a big ideal to measure up to--how about someone you would miss half or a quarter as much as I miss Kate, and make sure you go see them while you can, and maybe bring a friend, bring two. How about going to see everyone on this record who is touring and ask them to do a Kate Wolf song, or better, ask them to do whatever song Kate liked them to play for her.
sweet love..........2001-10-15
This CD will bring you to tears...all the artists that paid tribute to Kate Wolf did so with all their hearts...every song is done with tender loving care and honor the memory of this beautiful song writer...
Radiant proof that Kate Wolf was a first rate lyricist.......2001-07-03
I love these songs more than those that I've heard Kate Wolf herself sing. Lucinda William's contribution is perfect.
In memoriam Kate.......2001-06-14
A lovingly produced tribute to the late folk singer/songwriter. Some of the artists -- John Gorka, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams -- never met her but are fervent admirers. Others -- U Utah Phillips, Terry Garthwaite, Peter Rowan, Greg Brown -- worked with her. Each seems moved to invest something of their soul in the songs, and the result is extremely moving. Best tracks? Well, they're all great, but I'd give the nod to Dave Alvin's world-weary take on These Times We're Living In, and the age-meets-experience of Phillips on See Here She Said and Rosalie Sorrel's In China Or A Woman's Heart; and the instrumental version of Back Roads by Nina Gerber, Kate's own guitarist, who also acted as the producer and motivating force behind the project. If you don't know anything about Kate Wolf, you'll be a fan by the time the record's over; if you're already a fan, you'll be intrigued and moved by the different approach each artist brings to these songs. Get it; you'll never regret it.

Virtuoso Players Gild the Lilly.......2007-04-19
Reviewers who write that these are fine musicians playing lousy arrangements are correct. That's it exactly. The slower cuts are better than the up-tempo ones. Apparently this CD is a big hit with bagpipe tooters. So be it. The rest of us should pass it by or purchase it used.
Keep looking - there is much better stuff than this.......2005-10-05
This album is a perfect example of how a bad arrangement can ruin great music despite the best efforts of great musicians. Everything about this recording is right; selection, performers, sound engineering. Except that the tracks are horribly over-arranged with all sorts of distracting, subtracting variations and trite bridging passages.
Diasppointed.......2005-07-12
I am not saying the music is bad or the quality is lacking, because it is not. If you are looking for traditional music played in the traditional way, then this CD is not for you. It is like listening to everyone's interpretation when they sing the "Star Spangled Banner". There is no need to jazz things up that were not written to be. The titles are old but the variations on the score have a lot to be desired if you wanted to hear these songs played the way they were meant to be played.
This album is an absolute disaster.......2005-06-08
It's said that music soothes the savage beast, but bagpipes will do just the opposite. They will make the hair on your neck stand on end, your blood pressure go through the roof and prepare you to go to war. This album does neither.
The one piece which should most strongly produce the desired result is Scotland the Brave. In this album it is three minutes and twenty seven seconds, the first minute an ten of which are dedicated to fanfare. After that an orchestra plays some stylized version and, I think, I can detect a hint of bagpipes in there somewhere. When one has heard it done "correctly", one can recognize this as a total disaster.
Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has a version that is just about right. (And that selection gives one the ability to listen to a sample. I can see why this one doesn't!)
Take My Advice, I'm Only Tryin' to School Ya -.......2004-07-07
I bought this album based on the rave reports of the other reviewers, and could NOT be more pleased with the result. Although not Scottish, I am a long-time bagpipe lover, and this album evokes visions of the Black Watch and other highland pipers moving through their intricate paces. The music is an aural feast, and the sound quality is excellent. I keep it in the CD player in the car and find that a quick drive or a long commute both become pleasures when I'm listening to it. Take my advice - if you have even a slight interest in pipes, drums or brass, you're going to love this album. (This is the first time I have ever written a review; it's a very compelling album!)

Customer Reviews:
Best collection of marches!.......2006-08-07
In spite of the mixed reviews below, after listening to the samples, I had to send for this CD. I am so glad I did - this is the best collection of marches I have ever owned. It's worth noting that the Band of the Grenadier Guards is a British military band whose history goes back 300 years!
The Best Sousa Album.......2005-09-06
This is the best album of marches I've heard. I agree with the reviewer who said they like these versions better. The orchestral versions are good, but I used to play in the band in high school (no, I don't have any "this one time, at band camp..." stories), so I like this type better.
Sousa Marches.......2005-08-15
I like this CD better than any of the others I previewed, and when it came I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the CD to use with my dog, Nina. She loves it and it has helped her relax and gait more smoothly in preparation for exhibiting in dog shows. This CD was the only one that wasn't performed by a string orchestra. It's more like you would actually hear a marching band at a half-time football game.
There are 2 sections in this CD.......2005-06-30
There are two different sections in this CD. Section 1 includes marches 1 to 12 and it is not the best recording that I have ever hear for Sousa Marches. However, Section 2 includes marches 13 to 23 and I consider that this is one of the best recording I have ever heard for the marches of the USA Services. So, even if the two sections are very different, you may buy this CD if you have never listened the Sousa marches; it will give you the opportunity to hear them. After that, if you wish to buy a high quality CD of Sousa Marches, continue to shop on Amazon.
A Bit TOO "Budget Buy" For Sousa.......2004-05-16
I have become quite the Sousa fan in the past year. While my ear for classical music is that of a casual fanboy and not a seasoned classical music critic, I have become particular in my Sousa preferences, and this particular release left me cold. The pace of the marches on this CD are sluggish, and sounds tinny even to a listener with a tin ear.
John Philip Sousa marches are just too good and lively to settle for a budget release like this. A good release like those by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band series is a better place to start your Sousa collection!

Authenric Music with traditional instruments........2000-09-17
For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.
Living history.......1999-07-31
So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title
(DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

Customer Reviews:
Great Soundtrack for a Great Movie!.......2003-01-19
Left Behind: The Movie Soundtrack is one of my personal favorites in my music collection, although when I purchased it I was kind of expecting an edgier mix of music. However, this soundtrack is worth the purchase price.
This soundtrack features a variety of artists, including Michael W. Smith, Joy Williams, Third Day, Plus One, Avalon, Fred Hammond, LaRue, Jake, Rebecca St. James, Bob Carlisle, Kathy Troccoli, V-Enna, Clay Crosse, and Bryan Duncan w/ Shine. It contains 15 tracks:
1. Never Been Unloved (Bruce Barne's Song) - Michael W. Smith
2. I Believe in You - Joy Williams
3. Sky Falls Down (Israel Is Attacked) - Third Day
4. I Need a Miracle - Plus One
5. Hide My Soul - Avalon
6. Can't Wait for You to Return - Fred Hammond
7. Midnight Cry - Various Artists
8. Fly (Chloe's Song) - LaRue
9. Believer - Jake
10. Come Quickly, Lord - Rebecca St. James
11. After All (Rayford's Song) - Bob Carlisle
12. Live for the Lord (Irene's Song) - Kathy Troccoli
13. All the Way to Heaven - V-Enna
14. No Fear (Panic in the Streets) - Clay Crosse
15. Left Behind Main Theme - performed by Bryan Duncan w/ Shine
My favorite tracks on this soundtrack would have to be Believer, No Fear, Sky Falls Down, and Fly. Midnight Cry is pretty good, too, and is featured in a music video at the end of Left Behind: The Movie.
One reason this soundtrack is unique is because each of the main characters in the movie has their own theme songs, which go well with their unique personalities and demeanors.
Most of the songs on this CD deal with the Rapture of the church, such as Can't Wait for You to Return, Midnight Cry, Fly, Come Quickly Lord, and Left Behind Main Theme.
In concluding this review, I say that this soundtrack is the perfect compliment to Left Behind fans. However, you can still enjoy this soundtrack even if you didn't enjoy the movie. Fans of contemporary Christian music will love this soundtrack.
An interesting collection of songs!.......2002-09-02
I don't really listen to Christian pop music that much. But I liked the music from the movie "Left Behind", so I picked up "The Movie Soundtrack" today. I was kind of expecting some rock music spread out through the CD. It was mainly just pop music. Not that that is bad, the CD is acutally very good. The thing that's weird is the songs are all out of order. The Theme Song is actually at the end. The first track is Michael W. Smith (I really like his music) and so on, track 15 is where you'll find "Left Behind". Just thought that I should inform you. I have noticed that the CD is in 2 different covers. The one I have just has the plane wheels, an orange background and the runway. The one that Amazon has is one with Kirk Cameron on the cover. Anyway here's what I personally think of the soundtrack:
This CD is awesome! I just wish that someone would release a rock version with more songs inspired by the characters. Anyway, if you enjoyed the movie, then pick this CD up. Its worth every second of it. But I warn you: The enhanced CD portion of the disc will freeze up and you will have to "Ctrl,Alt,Delete" to get out of it, so don't use that unless you want to see some great menus then "X" out. The rest of the CD works though.
My new favorite CD!.......2002-05-13
I am a Christian who has been reading the books for a few weeks,( I'm almost done with Nicolae)and i love the movie but the books are kinda better. I love watching the music videos so i got the cd. I LOVE IT!!!! Even though the track order is [messed] up who cares? My favorites are; Hide my Soul, Sky falls down,* Beliver *, No fear, and Left Behind. If your not a Christian you probably won't like or understand the music, but if you're into good no i mean GREAT CHRISTIAN MUSIC then this is definately for u. I listen to it like 5 times a day!
Good, but Disappointing.......2002-05-12
I enjoy listening to this CD, but it's a little disappointing. I hope high hopes after watching the movie and seeing the ad for the CD at the end of it. But, the music I received didn't quite match up to my expectations. Further, the music on the disc itself isn't even in the same order as the list on the jewel case.
A great choice.......2002-04-05
If you like Contemporary Christian Music, you will love this CD. It has many CCM favorite artists. All of the songs are awesome, but my favorite is "Fly" by LaRue. I also recommend the WoW 2000 CD.
