At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? (Note also that unlike some similar projects, all the parties involved on this CD were alive when it was recorded!) The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters-type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this pointon "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he's quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Tony Bennett.......2007-07-16
Great duets, enjoyed every song on the CD!! He still continues to amaze me with that silky voice. He's a legend....
It really swings.......2007-07-14
All classics with new voices. I bought it after seeing the special on PBS.
Not bad but the voice is going--sorry.......2007-06-27
I would say "OK" but it is not of the quality of the Ray Charles' duets. Tony is fantastic but time diminshes the quality of the voice.
Watch the DVD, then rate the album.......2007-06-23
PBS ran the tape of the making of Duets and gave me a whole new perspective on the CD. I now can visualize each song as I listen, and it has enhanced my enjoyment of the best tracks while making ones I thought were not as good much more in line with the Bennett tradition of "telling the story" of each song. He gets inside the music and lives there with such ease.
There is nobody who can blend with Bennett's voice better than k.d. lang - except Diana Krull, James Taylor, Tim McGraw or, well, most of the other people chosen to sing with him.
This record is joyful and not enhanced, as one reviewer suggested. Hearing/seeing how Bennett works with lyrics and other performers still amazes me. I've been a fan since his first recording - there was nothing like a Bennett song for setting the mood.
Tolerable but falls short of its potential.......2007-06-19
As much as I wanted to rate this album higher, befitting Tony's legendary status, I couldn't because it suffers from "too many cooks in the kitchen." Like so many of these collaborations, some of the singers paired with Bennett work (McCartney, Michael, Streisand, John, and a surprisingly good Bono), some are adequate (Dion, Wonder, Joel, Juanes) and some fall into the "what-were-they-thinking" category (The Dixie Chicks, McGraw and John Legend).
And no matter how much respect I have for the legendary crooner, Bennett's voice is, expectedly, not what it used to be and on some songs, he strains and has wavy tones.
However, one can't deny his musical status and the fact that he was able to get so many top-notch talent to support is a testament to that fact.
And the choice of songs can't be denied; they are all bonafide "classics" in the truest sense of the term.

As good as tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano's recent quartet albums featuring piano master Hank Jones were, they didn't prepare us for the sublimity of this two-man encounter. Duets Live has it all: brilliant and spirited individual playing, exceptional rapport, a terrific mix of songs and a luminous awareness of jazz in all its varied forms. What makes Lovano and Jones so compatible, even though they are separated by more than three decades, is the ease with which they each straddle and move back and forth across the line beween modern and pre-modern (in this, Lovano recalls Coleman Hawkins, one of the giants Jones backed). Much of the material is steeped in classic bop, but Jones points the way back to an earlier golden era with his lambent sparkle and Lovano comes at songs like "Charlie Chan" (his salute to Charlie Parker), Thelonious Monk's "Four in One," and Tadd Damerson's "Soultrane" from consistently fresh angles even as he applies his classic husky sound. Still a force at 88, Jones elegantly frees three of his late brother Thad's tunes from their big band trappings and in the solo spotlight pulls out stops on the standard, "Oh! Look at me Now!" It's a performance of gusty expression and poetic delicacy, slyness and warmth, and endless smiles. Is it too much to ask for a volume two? --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
A MAGNIFICENT DUO: HANK & JOE IN A TIMELESS, BEAUTIFUL JAZZ PERFORMANCE.......2007-05-13
Five MAGNIFICENT Stars!! The legendary jazz keyboard master Hank Jones and legendary tenor saxophone titan, Joe Lovano, have conjured up one of the best jazz duet performances in years!! And they are caught live at the intimate Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in the Frederick P. Rose Hall, which is the Jazz At Lincoln Center performance complex in NYC. These are timeless, beautiful, flawless performances by two jazz masters who have almost restlessly searched the jazz spectrum for fulfillment in many formats over the years. They definitely have found something very special here that just may require an encore and it happened in a great venue. Stepping away from Mr Lovano's quartet, these two incomparable musicians have all of the propulsion and rhythm that is needed to propel these excellent performances along nicely. Unencumbered by bass and drum, they bend and stretch the time at will, with Hank providing colorations as well as wicked time-keeping 'stride piano' with Joe soaring, making for some wonderful mellow jazz music. '80ish' Mr Jones plays with equal fire as '50ish' Mr Lovano making this an empathetic match made in jazz heaven.
The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, are wall to wall equally-captivating performances which proceed without letdown from song to song. But I especially like the fire by both players on "Lady Luck", written by Hank's brother, Thad, and "Kids Are Pretty People". I also love Joe's nod to older tenor players with his 'Ben Webster-ish' tenor sax effects on "Lullaby" and his nod to Yardbird Parker on "Charlie Chan", so reminiscent of Miles' "Half Nelson". Hank gets two solo bites of this CD apple with a wonderful, shimmering "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning" and "Oh Look At Me Now", which is fitting since "Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola" is known for great solo piano performances. Joe gets off what is probably his best solo, alone and later with Hank, on a swirling performance of Monks' "Four In One", blowing hot, liquid strings of notes. Pure, timeless, magnificent jazz music! Encore, gentlemen! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!

This is a misnomer--not all of these duets are all that famous--but it's a fine compilation nonetheless. You'll hear selections from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Nicolai Gedda and Ernest Blanc at their most elegant French), Madama Butterfly (Carlo Bergonzi and Renata Scotto--an impassioned pair), Lucia di Lammermoor (a classy Alfredo Kraus and Edita Gruberova), the lovely Lakme duet, The Presentation of the Silver Rose from Der Rosenkavalier (with the earnest Christa Ludwig and the other-worldly Teresa Stich-Randall), and a fine Trovatore "Miserere" (with Leontyne Price and Franco Bonisolli singing up a storm). There are many others, too--a veritable cornucopia of couplings--and a treat for the opera lover. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Can't go wrong.......2007-07-14
This is a really great CD for the price. It has many of the famous Arias on it and although the singers may not be the best out there they are certainly very good. This is cheaper than the price of a take away lunch; you can't go wrong with this CD.
Most Famous???.......2007-05-14
The title of this cd is misleading and I found myself wondering whose list did they use. That is not to say that there aren't some real treasures included here. The duet from Lakme is lovely in every way, Mady Mesple in particular, very beautful and very french, and far superior to Sutherlands hooty approach. Scotto and Bergonzi are superb, the Tristan and Isolde of Vickers and Dernesch truly other worldly, and the presentation of the rose duet with the young Ludwig and the astonishing Teresa Stich- Randell had me playing it over and over and I still can't believe it, but the most famous??? This cd is definitly worth buying, and I hated giving it only 3 stars but if you're talking most famous you could fill a couple of cd's with Puccini, not to mention Verdi, Mozart, etc. before Bizet's Les Pecheurs des perles, beautiful as it is, made the most famous list.
Only one song knew well.......2007-05-14
I should have done more research. The last song is the only one I could easily recognize. Live and learn.

This seller truly makes a purchaser confident in the product as well the time in which is promised.
Thanks again!!!!!
Good selection of opera highlights.......2006-11-04
Super performances by famous opera artists of the 20th century, most of them no longer performing and some of them deceased. I enjoy having their voices available at home.

Marty Stuart began collaborating with legends when he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a 13-year-old mandolinist. One of his biggest singles, 1991's "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," teamed him with Travis Tritt. This compilation includes a rare Stuart mandolin workout on Bill Monroe's "Rawhide" recorded onstage with Flatt in 1974, and "Hearts Like Ours" with wife Connie Smith. He and ex-father-in-law Johnny Cash created a fiery revival of Cash's Sun recording of "Doin' My Time." With Steve Earle, Stuart created a beautifully understated rendition of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping." He was equally adept with Earl Scruggs on "John Henry" and with Merle Haggard on a 2003 "Farmer's Blues." That empathy extended to blues and gospel greats, apparent on "The Weight" with the Staple Singers and "Confessin' the Blues" with B.B. King. Two unreleased tracks include Stuart and Loretta Lynn reviving "Will You Visit Me on Sunday," a tune she'd previously recorded with the late Conway Twitty, and the Who's "I Can See for Miles" with Stuart, his band, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Unlike the many Nashville "vocal events" that are simply contrived marketing ploys, Stuart's collaborations are consistently organic, without a shred of artifice. --Rich Kienzle

Even in the face of epochal success, it's tempting to ponder what Barbra Streisand might have accomplished had she not spread herself across so many diverse entertainment media; so much ambition, so little time. This collection of 19 Streisand duets chronicles collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland at one end of the scale and Don Johnson at the other. It finds the singer dabbling--if, as her bluesy miscue with Ray Charles on "Crying Time" argues, not necessarily triumphing--in styles she largely eschewed elsewhere in her career. Still, her unlikely collaborations with Barry Gibb ("Guilty," "What Kind of Fool") and Donna Summer ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough") during the disco era scored her some of the biggest successes of her career, ample proof that with the right chemistry, Streisand could be as powerful a pop music chameleon as she was a diva. New recordings with veteran Barry Manilow (the warm, low-key "I Won't Be the One to Let You Go") and Josh Groban (David Foster's overwrought "All I Know of Love") supplement recordings that stretch from the '60s kitsch-a-go-go of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead" across five decades of Streisand's unparalleled career. --Jerry McCulley

I was so enthralled to hear the CD of Duets. I have always loved Barbra Streisands voice and this was just great. I enjoyed it enormously and listen to it all the time. Her choice of male singer was perfect.
The greatest.......2007-03-13
Barbar is always a good buy. This showes how she can sing with so many different people and pull it off. Ever with her self. What more could I say?
For a few chilling moments.......2007-02-14
Much of this is not the greatest Steisand, though Streisand almost always is a very great and moving singer. But certain moments here sent a chill down the spine. Hearing Judy Garland 's voice and then Streisand's was such a moment. Arguably the two greatest female ballad singers all time. There was another moment just hearing Sinatra and Streisand together though their collaboration on 'I've got a Crush on you' is far from what each is capable of. I remember the Barry Gibb collaboration and it still has its pleasantness. Her duet with Josh Groban is a nice piece. The opening riff of her duet with Ray Charles is a bit overdone. Barbara is an entertainer who gives it all but here it sounds as if she is schmaltzing it up a bit.
On the whole though her quality as a singer prevails here as it does in most of her work.
DUETS.......2007-02-11
ONE OF THE BEST DUETS OUT THERE. GOOD ARRANGEMENTS WITH GOOD COMBOS MAKES SWEET MUSIC. ENJOY.

Wonderful !!!!.......2007-07-07
This was my first introduction to Selah, and I am so-o-o happy I purchased this CD! Very poignant lyrics and beautiful music. My favorites are Gentle Healer and Glory, but really the whole CD is just wonderful. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent - contemporary twist to old favorites - making them new all over again!.......2007-06-22
I will probably always be one to recommend a Selah album, because I grew up in a church visited yearly by Nicol and Todd's parents, Congo missionaries Jim and Nancy Smith and used to hear the whole family sing way back when (in fact, I think my parents have an old record of hymns the family put out years ago!). That being said, this album is amazing! I've been listening to it over and over the last couple of weeks, hearing new layers every time. I love beautifully written lyrics - the mix of these classics with the voices of the Selah members and their duet partners is matchless.
At first listen, "Bless the Broken Road" stood out as my favorite, but then I listened more closely to "All My Tears," which I'd surprisingly never heard before. Now it stands out as my favorite on the album, esp. with Kim Hill's folksy sound, and one of my favorite songs ever.
Completely a stand-out album - so much depth and breadth.
Oh - and for those that didn't know, Nicol stepped out to raise her family and support her husband at Moody Bible Institute's grad school. She's worked some on solo stuff, too.
Christain Music.......2007-05-16
This is a from the heart CD. The song Bless the Broken Road would be applicable to everyone who has traveled a rocky road to find the peace and joy a Christian experiences. Another song, profound, outright addresses death and burial. Sounds gruesome, but it is awesome. No rock bands here, just beautifully orchestrated music that is uplifting and encouraging.
Love Selah~.......2007-05-09
Loved most of the CD. Not their best in my opinion, but worth having.
There are some great songs here.
Keeps getting better.......2007-04-11
This "album" is their best yet. Selah fans won't be disappointed.

How do you drum up interest in a Jerry Lee Lewis record, since the Ferriday Fireball is 71 and hasn't put out an album since 1996? First, you pair him with 22 of the biggest stars of rock (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards), country (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and blues (Buddy Guy, B.B. King), to show how he put his stamp on nearly every genre. Then, you hire the dean of music chroniclers, Peter Guralnick, to give the liner notes heft. And--oh, yes, you also make sure the piano-pounding pioneer displays the best finger form he's shown in 25 years. Throughout, the Killer crows, struts, and self-mythologizes with the brio of youth, and who could resist him? At times, one may question the wisdom of turning an obvious guitar tune (Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll") into a piano-dominated performance, just as it seems odd to not make the best use of such guests as Toby Keith or Delaney Bramlett. But Lewis never yields the throne for a second, even surrounded by the likes of Robbie Robertson, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton. For that reason, most of these aren't true duets--the star instrumentalists take their solos, and the harmonies of some of the most legendary vocalists (Don Henley, Little Richard) stay too far in the background. But when things really work--as they do with Bruce Springsteen (the rave-up "Pink Cadillac"), Neil Young (a crackling rendition of "You Don't Have To Go"), Kid Rock (an even blacker "Honky Tonk Woman"), George Jones (the novelty-framed "Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age"), and Kris Kristofferson (an especially poignant take on "The Pilgrim: Chapter 33"), the rock of ages cleaves for thee and me. Last Man Standing refers to the famous cover of Million Dollar Quartet, on which he's pictured with fellow Sun artists Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, all now jamming in the great beyond. Yet in a spoken-word reprise at the end of the Kristofferson song--"From the rocking of the cradle / To the rolling of the hearse / The going up was worth the coming down"--the Last Man seems to suggest his own fine epitaph. It's hard to argue with a hellraiser extraordinaire. --Alanna Nash
Album Description
Twenty-two rock and country legends duet with Jerry Lee Lewis on this incredible package, celebrating The Killer's impact on American music. Among the luminaries igniting these all-new recordings of seminal rock 'n' roll are Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Toby Keith, Little Richard, Merle Haggard, Neil Young, and more.

Man, that just blew my mind!.......2007-07-01
About 50 years ago, Sun Records was at the forefront of the beginning of rock and roll, with performers like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. The title of this CD refers to the fact that Jerry Lee Lewis is "the last man standing" among these Sun Records legends, which is pretty amazing when you consider that he probably led the wildest life of all of them. For this album, the 70something year old Killer performs duets with a bunch of other record stars. "Duets" is not quite an accurate description, though, since some guests just perform instruments and some guests sing what amounts to background vocals. But the real star here is of course Jerry Lee himself, who proves that he can still sing and pump the piano better than just about anybody. He handles rock, country and blues songs equally well. The duet partners were probably added to make the album more commercial, but they do manage to add something to the mix, since it gives the album more variety. I suspect that their presence also pushed Jerry Lee to do his best, since he wouldn't want to be outshined on his own album. The Killer can frequently be heard joking around with them, which adds to the fun of the album. This is probably the greatest rock and roll album every recorded by a senior citizen, and it puts to rest the lie that rock music is strictly for young people.
It's about time!.......2007-05-28
Jerry Lee is one of the last surviving rock and roll pioneers and it is about time he rec'd some quality attention. I've seen him live, and man, oh, man, is he for real. The production on this project is good, the performances are good, the packaging is good, the song selection is good; this will definitely be a project that will add to his legacy. As with all of us, Father Time is catching up with the Killer, and my personal wish is that whoever was responsible for this project would have done it 10-15 years ago. It seems so many of the early rock and roll pioneers die without really having quality documentation (there is a good special featuring Carl Perkins, which shamefully had to be made in England because he was apparently appreciated more there, and of course Chuck Berry's "Hail, Hail, Rock and Rock" should be in every music lover's home). Now if we could only get new projects from Chuck Berry, or Little Richard, or Fats Domino!
never quit.......2007-05-17
This guy is an immortal. Some people are great forever. He is one.
Age is Showing.......2007-05-15
It is painfully obvious that Jerry Lee isn't the "Killer" anymore, but I am still happy I have added this latest work to my collection.
Wonderful CD.......2007-05-06
This is a great CD if you like the boogie woogie style paino. So many wonderful voices have paired up with Jerry for this one, you can't help but like some of the songs, and fortunately I liked them all. Perhaps my favorite is he with B.B. King--a wonderful piece. This is not a perfectly orchestrated CD, and the "soul" comes through.

Rolando Villazon and Anna Netrebko, opera's "golden couple" (or is it "dream team?") have just released their first CD of duets. In the duet that closes the first act of Bohème, both singers are in rapturous voice, their phrasing sensitive and sincere. The Lucia-Edgardo duet is passionate and tender by turns, with Villazon particularly good - he takes his solo softly and in a long breath. The Duke and Gilda are roles made for them: She sounds sweet and vulnerable and he sounds like he believes what he's singing at the moment, and their final high D flat together is a dazzler. A hypnotic Roméo et Juliette duet follows, with gentle singing from both, and they make the most of Leila and Nadir's scene from The Pearl Fishers, turning in a languorous, smooth performance. The big duet from the third act of Manon finds Netrebko at her most seductive and a duet from Iolanta, probably the most lyrical tenor-soprano moment in Russian opera, is a nice rarity, with Villazon very at home in the Russian idiom and the pair soaring to great emotional heights. A delicious number from Torroba's Zarzuela Luisa Fernando ends the CD on a soft, tender note. Netrebko's diction remains unfortunate and while singing with a partner whose diction is as clean and clear as Villazon's, it becomes more noticeable. But there's precious little to complain about here - it's a true pleasure to hear singing and communicating of this caliber. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
five stars +.......2007-05-15
This is an exceptional album, both in content and in the artistry of the singers. Well worth the way above market price.
Wonderful duets!.......2007-05-12
One of the best collection of operistic duets in the recent times.
They both are first class singers.
Powerful and expressive singing with an amazing technique and control.......2007-04-09
Considering Netrebko's and Villazon's age- both are in their thirties- the maturity and command of their artistry is constantly moving ahead of their years. Villazon, with all the bells and whistles of his top ringing notes, has becomes the spinto/Italianate tenor extraordinaire of our time that gives us glimpses- although I hate to make comparisons- of Correlli and Di Stefano.
Netrebko, as a soprano, is in a league of her own. Her voice in any new recording sounds better than in her last one. The lyricim, color and communicating power of her singing trancends vulnerability, despair and hopelessness that are so well portayed in Mimi's duet. Some bloggers hate Netrebko's guts and claim hype for her success. That's a cop out. You cannot sell out opera houses all over the world, and CDs that have surpassed in numbers many classical recording of the past, based only on hype. There must be a substantive voice behind a beautiful face and body. I love and I know opera well, and I've seen, live, many of the great sopranos of past forty years. And if I'm flying across the U.S.A. to see Netrebko at her Carnegie Hall debut- I was lucky to find one of the last tickets- is not hype. No body fooled me and no body made me do it.
For some, the jury may be still out for these two opera superstars, but this CD is an example of extraordinary singing and is highly recommended.

Another great recording.......2007-04-03
Well what can I say-I love every ringlet on his head-he is the man -the greatest-he rules. Every note is a gem that comes out of his mouth. Anna is pretty good too. She certainly is improving.
Divine Duo.......2007-04-02
Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazon, dubbed the 'Golden Couple' pair up for an album of beautiful operatic duets. Both singers possess glorious voices and each selection/scene captures the listener, with even two unfamilar items alongside the standard repertoire. I urge people to rather purchase the limited edition package that contains a bonus DVD, which shows the making of the album, as well as the music video for the Boheme duet, directed by Vincent Patterson.

Don't be misled. The name of the film may be Duets, but the soundtrack only features three actual duets. The film centers around wacky characters at a karaoke bar, and the soundtrack follows suit, featuring actors singing! Gwyneth Paltrow joins Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds for a cover of "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" and Huey Lewis for a go at Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'." "Try a Little Tenderness" is run through by Paul Giamatti and Arnold McCuller. Paltrow has a sweet whine in her voice, but it's no match for the husky drawl of Kim Carnes for "Bette Davis Eyes." Huey Lewis is no Joe Cocker with "Feelin' Alright," but it's a valiant rendition. On the other hand, Arnold McCuller's soulful reading of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" recasts the song as a spiritual. Duets is a perfect album for parties where "singing" "Copacabana" is a prerequisite. --Rob O'Connor

This is worth listening to. Everyone has heard Gwen and Mr. Lewis belt out this song on the radio, "I love it when we're crusin' together" THIS is where that song is from. It wasn't a big box office movie but it WAS a great one. If you take the time to watch it, you will recignize a lot of familiar faces! Great Great Great Great Great Movie! Buy it!!!

Four really good tracks on this CD; however, the rest are rough to get through. Paltrow has lovely voice...
Since the movie storyline involved kareoke singers; the track supports this genre.
