MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

I have the original Broadway version, but prefer this movie selection.
The CD is flawless and, in my opinion, there's nothing better than a Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical for music, lyrics and pure joy! This is the best!

It's no surprise that a group named after something said during a baseball game would title an album after something said during a basketball match. It is a bit of a surprise that this band remains so incredibly good, and capable of surprising even longtime listeners. This one's so diverse and such a mixture of different styles, it's reminiscent of the group's all-request on-air shows they play annually to support New Jersey-based radio station WFMU. Book-ended by two long, droney tunes, you've got garage-rock rave-ups, country-pop, horn-driven R&B, little gorgeous atmospheric songs, some brilliant falsetto singing, and... this list could go on and on. Who else would think to pair conga-style percussion to a Suicide-esque synth drone? Or even to work with longtime Dylan collaborator and strings arranger and violinist David Mansfield and have genius illustrator Gary Panter do the artwork at the same time? They made a fan out of me.......2007-06-03

Now I am not going to pretend to be an expert on Yo La Tengo. This is the first CD of theirs I have bought and I bought it primarily because of the greatest album name in history. OK, I had heard good things about them as well. Now, on first listen, I can see how some might think some of the songs are filler. But, when listening to the album in its entirity, you start to realize that all of the songs are brilliant and in their right place. I have listened to this album four times in a row today already and can not seem to stop. There are so many hypnotic hooks mixed in with the dreamy instrumentals and vocals. Just a very unique band that is hard to describe. They have made a fan out of me and I plan on getting their other CDs as well.

I rated this right away but after listening to it again I really like it. It deserves 5 stars but I can't seem to change that. You might think it has a latin sound with a name like Yo La Tengo, or maybe thats just me, but it's got that "indy" sound and if thats what you like you will like them.

They are afraid of singing.......2007-04-30

I like this record a lot, but I agree with others here who think the vocals are subdued. That's too bad--the vocal melodies are good, very catchy, but Ira and Georgia aren't loud enough. Can't really tell what they're singing. You can hear James just fine on "Mr. Tough." Ira already sounds like Lou Reed / Roger Waters at times, so he needs to really eat that microphone or dig down. You too, Georgia. We know you can sing. Get it on the tape next time!

Hmmm..........2007-03-28

I'm being generous with the 'four stars' rating. This album didn't actually stick with me as much as I thought it would. I bought it for the wonderful album title (which was worth it, just to say I have it) and was expecting the rest to be as humorous. I don't really get all of it - not that all songs are to be "gotten" - but the most of the songs didn't really grab enough of my attention for me to really enjoy them.

I can totally chill to most of it and so it makes a pretty good background CD, but the opening track "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind" is only good if you want to freak out for over ten minutes and the repititious nature of the song makes me sick.

I haven't heard any of the previous Yo La Tengo records, so I'm not a die hard fan and therefore probably didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. Maybe I'll pick it up a little later and like it better.

This album fails on every level. The first track is a stand-up rocker which shows that this band can piss with the big dogs. Then, they proceed to make wee-wee with the poodles. Either they have the actual heart of a poodle, or they have complete contempt for their fans. Neither motivation appeals to me. If a band has no competent vocalist, and can't bring itself to make a change in the line-up, it has limited options: 1) make the material suit your voices (the Dylan gambit); 2) damn the torpedos (the Grateful Dead tactic); 3) tweak your weak vocals electronically (most everyone) or 4) submerge the vocal into the production and hope no one notices. Yo La Tengo succeeds so perfectly with strategy #4 that not one word of the lyrics is even understandable. You can use your voice as an instrument if you're Roy Orbison, but everyone else should have something to say or shut up. Finally, rock, like every great body of work, sees into the future by standing on the shoulders of giants. However, if you take your instrumentation, phrasing, and production completely from the giants' actual songbooks it had better be a send up (Frank Zappa) or it better achieve the speed of camp (The Darkness). Otherwise, you're a rip off. If I want to hear The Beatles or Santana, I'll put them on. When I want something fresh and original, I'll listen to something besides this album.

This, Anonymous 4's final recording, is a break from their usual "early music" periods and locations; it presents American music, religious in nature, from the 18th and 19th centuries. And it's absolutely beautiful from start to finish. Their normal, exquisite technique and purity here blend to sound the way we imagined the ladies' choir in church meetings in America past might have sounded: sweet, sincere, and with harmonies recognizable yet somehow fresh. Some of the songs begin with the women singing "fa, so la" exercises, which was called "shape note" singing because some places taught singing with notes as shapes--circle, rectangle, diamond, triangle. But it's the music that counts, and there are treasures here. They include two versions of "Amazing Grace," one familiar, one with an unusual melody and a piece called "Blooming Vale" which is as sophisticated as anything on their previous albums. "Shall We Gather at the River" is performed with a clarity and loveliness that makes us forget that it's normally sung as background to movies about the Great Depression. The foursome sometimes sing in rich harmonies and occasionally alone or in pairs or trios. This is glorious Americana and highly recommended. --Robert Levine

I have some of the older Anonymous 4 recordings which are more medieval
and gregorian in style (I love them!). They move on to cover spiritual
basics of the 1800s. If you like classical music, perfect harmonies
and spiritual americina, then you will be blessed!

Anonymous 4 consistently produces exquisite and authentically beautiful recordings and this one presents early American hymns in ways few groups can manage. Some tunes are highly recognizable while others are 'new' to me but a refreshing reminder of the singing heritage of religious societies in times past. For those who enjoy old hymns and authentic renderings, this is a must buy.

Can't walk away from it!.......2006-08-07

My only "complaint" about the CD is that I absolutely HAVE to sit and listen to the entire thing whenever I start it up! I usually have music playing in the background while doing other things, but not this one! There are no tracks that I find myself wanting to skip over as in most collections. In fact, I usually find myself going back and listening to selected tracks again (and again and...) after taking the hour+ to listen to the whole thing through once.

These four ladies produce a unique and remarkable sound. I can't recommend it enough.

I think the title of this CD is perfect. I first heard an interview for this CD on Public Radio and fell in love. I had never heard Anonymous 4 before then but look for all I can find of their music now. The title is perfect as the women sound like Angels and the music lifts the spirit. I find myself singing the old version of Amazing Grace all the time now. Incredible and a huge blessing to all who hear it.

There are but two kinds of people in the world: Those captivated by Baz Luhrmann's heady, postmodernist musical romp Moulin Rouge--and everybody else. Wow........2007-01-15

I must say...I was very glad when they released Part Two of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. Don't get me wrong...the first part was great and all, but it was nothing spectacular. I was specifically looking for certain songs from the movie, and I was completely disappointed when they were on there. The release of a second soundtrack was, in my opinion, an absolute necessecity.

The highlights of the album are:

-Your Song (Instrumental)
-Sparkling Diamonds (original film version)
-Come What May (original film version)
-The Show Must Go On (original film version)

In my opinion, "The Show Must Go On" is the best song on this album...it was just so perfect for the ending of the movie, and I fell in love with the song. I was so disappointed that it wasn't on the first soundtrack. This song is part of what makes the second soundtrack so amazing...the song is fierce!!

If you love the movie and are a fan of the first soundtrack, then definitely, get this one. Many of the songs are versions taken straight from the movie - I recommend this with 4.5 stars...you will NOT be disappointed!

Love this CD.......2006-07-04

I love everything about this movie. The music is amazing and the instrumental songs on this CD are perfect. The first CD seemed to be more for a bunch of teenyboppers that wanted to hear the worst song on the whole CD (Lady Marmalade). If only they could combine the good songs from the first CD into this one.

I gave this 5 stars even though it's about a 4.5 because they split the soundtrack over two seperate cds.

Could it get any better?.......2006-03-02

So i thought that the first instalment in these soundtracks was great (and it was) but the purchase of this sequel is a must if you want the full effect. With the original film versions of these songs, sung by the stars of the movie, you get the real feel that was the magnifisence of Moulin Rouge! Ewan McGregor is still by far the star, with his talent spilling over the dramatic lovesong 'Come What May' and 'Your Song', but Nicole's brilliant performance as Satine definatly takes front and center in 'One Day I'll Fly Away' and the film version of 'Sparkling Diamonds'...I have noticed that many complain about how the first soundtrack did not include the film version of this song...well you need this CD then...you will not be dissapointed. Other highlights include 'Like a Virgin' which is downright histarical, and the dark cover of 'the show must go on' which highlights the tragidy behind this tightly woven tale. THis is one must have soundtrack for your ever growing collection. A perfect companion to soundtrack number 1!

Moulin rouge tried to fill up the GAP.......2006-02-12

This contains many great tracks missing from the original soundtrack, including Like A Virgin, Spectacular Spectacular and The Show Must Go On. I thought the inclusion of two instrumental versions of Your Song might be a bit redundant, but upon listening to them I really enjoyed them and they are quite different from one another. OK, it's not the best soundtrack that could have been put out. But it's pretty darn close. One thing that many DEDICATED fans of the movie (including myself) said is that the original movie soundtrack lacked the actual original movie score. There are 10+ songs in "Moulin Rouge" and many didn't make the final cut.

Baz did the smart thing, taking the audiences favorite music, a few gems from the first soundtrack such as "Come What May" and "Sparkling Diamonds" as well as a few new songs, like "Like a Virgin", "The Show Must Go On" and "The Pitch (Spectacular Spectacular)" and releasing the Original Film versions, allowing for the amazing vocal performances of the actors, including the fabulous Jim Broadbent, to be shine through. Also, released is background music "Meet Me in the Red Room", played during Christian's arrival in the elephant, marking the only non-actor/orchestral piece within the context of the CD.

One thing that this soundtrack included that I didn't expect was several orchestral pieces that were mostly used as background music throughout the film. "Your Song - Instrumental" (#1) has personally become a favorite and is constantly being repeated in the CD player. Also included is the ending credits music "Bolero" and the final piece ... known as "Ascension/Nature Boy". Also included is a remix of "One Day I'll Fly Away", and like all MR remixes, is a little tough to listen to at first but after repeat listening, it becomes music to your ears.

To all you MR diehards out there: this is a must. Not like I could stop you anyways. To others who haven't been introduced to the spectacular (spectacular) world of Moulin Rouge, this is a great introductory piece, especially side-by-side with the first soundtrack.

Everything the other customers are saying is true: more music from the film, thankyouverymuch, not irritating pop conceits like the first. However, I would not have reviewed this album unless I found it absolutely necesary to point out that, in the climactic moments of track 5 "Come What May," Ewan MacGregor's voice is for some reason missing and replaced by a bizarre, operatic man's voice. It truly had me crying with laughter the first few times I heard it, and I wanted to share this wondrous discovery with the world.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

This is a fantastic CD with truly the "best" love songs. In addition, to songs about romantic love, there are songs appropriate for friendship and also songs about the love to/from God.

I bought this CD when planning my wedding just to get ideas for wedding music. I still listen to this CD after my wedding, because it has such great Christian songs commonly used in weddings. I loved the music was all sung by it's original artist. It's a must have CD of Christian Wedding/Love songs.

I recently purchased this CD which I happen to find while browsing in Amazon.Com. After listening to sample clips, I was convinced that this compilation of various artists was the best choice of all the other wedding music CD's that I have viewed. This cd offers a variety of music styles from comtemporary artists. Very romantic, perfect for your wedding! I highly recommend this cd for those who are just can't find the right music to play at their wedding. I highly recommend it!

Excellent Score -- Very Unique.......2007-02-22

I have long been a film-score aficionado. My favorite composers are Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams -- only the best of the best. I had always known about James Newton Howard and his work, and always respected his unique abilities and talents.

It was with this score that he really caught my attention. The central theme of the film is a love story, and the characters just happen to be caught up in a nightmarish scenario. The score reflects this perfectly; some of the pieces are classically romantic, quiet pieces, while others are thunderous and frightening to reflect the danger and terror portrayed in the film.

James Newton Howard's later works, like "King Kong" (2005) and his co-score with Hans Zimmer on "Batman Begins" (2005) continued to show that he is rightly considered one of Hollywood's A-list composers for big films.

I admit I absolutely hated "The Village". The film started out rather good. The build up in suspense was flawlessly executed but then the second half of the film totally went downhill for me. One of the few things I enjoyed about "The Village" is the film score by James Newton Howard. The combination of the orchestral film score and dark cinematography was perfect. Both complimented each other. Violinist Hilary Hahn was what really gravitated me to the music. A lot of film scores have a terrible tendency to be loud and bombastic (like John Williams and Hans Zimmer) but James Howard Newton's score is subtle and never overwhelming to a person's ears.

'The Village' was panned pretty harshly in critical circles, but whatever you think of the film, James Newton Howard's score for it is a beautiful piece of work. It lends a haunting, lyrical quality to the film, and it is wonderful to listen to by itself, whether or not you like or have even seen the movie.

While there are a couple pieces in the score that are a little more high-octane in terms of suspense, most of the music is very low-key. Still suspenseful, even spooky at times, but in a very understated and thoughtful way. In some ways similar to Howard's score for 'Signs', which also used repeated rhythms and themes throughout in different ways, the music for 'The Village' differs from the standard "scary movie" score by having pieces which establish a real emotional depth and presence. 'The Village' is a film about love and loss, and much of the music expresses those themes perfectly.

A big part of how the music gets to the depths of emotion is the solo violin performances of Hilary Hahn, present to some extent in almost every piece. From the opening strains of "Noah Visits," the first piece on the CD, her violin speaks the language of the heart and draws the listener into a beautiful world of haunting music, inescapable and compelling. I am amazed by her versatility here. From the fast rhythmic notes of "The Gravel Road" to the high strains of "I Cannot See His Color" to the final, bittersweet tones of "The Vote," Hahn's violin creates a steady thread through the whole score, unifying it and making it unique at the same time. I've listened to several of Hahn's classical performances as well, but I have to say that of what I've heard, her performance for 'The Village' may be her most unique and most compelling yet.

The combination of James Newton Howard's compositions and Hilary Hahn's lush performance have created some beautiful music for 'The Village'. Whether you love the movie or hate it, or even if you're just looking for some rich orchestral music with a beautiful violin performance, this score is well worth owning and listening to many times over.

Good Soundtrack!.......2006-08-03

I'll admit I bought this soundtrack for the music that played during the rescue scene when Phoenix grabbed Howard's hand---that part alone was worth the buy--beautiful music. Anyway, if you like scary music, there's plenty of that on here, but I usually skip those. So let's get down to it---how many tracks do I play over and over and never get sick of them? Numbers 9, 8, and 4's second half-- it switches from scary to the scene mentioned above. Those three are hauntingly beautiful. Numbers 1 and 5 are also very pretty if you are in a very relaxed state. The rest I don't really listen to simply because they're scary. But, if I can find a cd with at least 3 songs I really like, I consider it worth buying...so I recommend this soundtrack. Plug--- recommend the movie even more, even though the music is scarier than the movie itself. That movie has the best chic flic moment I've seen (guess which scene I'm talking about). Also, "Good afternoon Lucius..."--- that part is hilarious!

I'm a sucker for film scores. I can't get enough of em'. I've listened to a lot, and based on the reviews James N. Howard's score was getting for "The Village", I decided to buy it.
I have mixed feelings--the music is definitely very pretty, very soothing (or agressive when needed), but I never really felt like I was listening to anything but just 'another' score here. There really isn't anything especially beautiful or stand-out, and I have heard orchestral scores from independent films (see 2002's "Stranded", a low-budget sci-fi film made for only about four million clams that boasts one of the most gorgeous scores you will ever hear)that are more memorable and evocative.
This, I hate to say it, just kinda felt "blah" to me.
Not bad.
Just...kinda..."Blah".

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices,the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

Not a weak spot from start to finish..........2007-03-20

I love this album. The last song is just as refreshing as the first. Mo's crisp bright vocals and guitar are fresh - and enough to get the most rythmically-challenged of us swingin' and swayin.'

I've heard the comparisons - And if I had to, I'd roll out the one that says Norah Jones/Jack Johnson/Nelly Furtado all rolled into one. But she's much more than that. MoZella has some deep soul and this undertone of hip-hop/funk that just seems to bring something new to the table.

Where Mo-Mo will get ya though, is in her live performances. I hate to use the word refreshing yet again... But on stage, she's just a cool drink of water and a whole lot of fun to be in front of. She'll have you dancin' around and smilin' your cheeks sore at the same time.

Mozella has a great voice and lyrical style. If I were to compare her to anyone (vocally speaking), (sorry Mozella...most artists hate to be compared), I'd say a mash-up between Esthero, Corrine Bailey Rae and Macy Gray. LOVE the tunes and wish her ALL the success she deserves!!!

Fresh-sounding and pleasant debut from MoZella.......2006-11-08

Having had no prior knowledge of MoZella, I bought this CD completely on a whim (the cover art grabbed me) and having listened to it a few times, I've formed my opinion that this is worth checking out. Mozella's style has a freshness to it not often heard in the music scene. This album is accessible without coming across as cliché, something that definitely works in its favor. Steady Hip-Hop style drum beats provide the foundation for melodic guitar and keyboard parts. In a way this album reminds me of Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" CD in that aspect. Fans of that album will most likely enjoy this.

The comparisons of MoZella's voice to Norah Jones are correct-she isn't necessarily a carbon-copy of Norah, but I can definitely see the similarity (that unique raspy tone). And I'd also compare her to Fiona Apple strictly in terms of tone of voice. Lyrics aren't this album's strong point though; to me, what makes it work are the catchy melodies and choruses. I don't think "You Wanted It" was the best choice for the opener, as this song is far from the strongest on the album. But tracks 2 through 6 are the meat & potatoes of this CD in my opinion. MoZella's singing compliments the songs so well on these tracks that I'd say these songs are worth the price of admission. The remaining songs are worthy as well, if a lot mellower.

All in all, MoZella's debut album would make a great addition to any collection. Not necessarily the best release of the year, but great driving music, or just music to relax to.
