Sometimes guitar showdowns work, and sometimes they don't. Lone Star Shootout definitely does, as three veteran Gulf Coast bluesmen band together for 15 killer tracks, with a little help from their friends. Lonnie Brooks, Phillip Walker, and Long John Hunter play with all the confidence one would expect of musicians who honed their skills in venues that make that country bar from The Blues Brothers look tame. Shootout is an appealing mix of Texas, Chicago (Brooks in particular has spent a lot of time there), and Cajun country (check out "Bon Ton Roulet," and recall that both Brooks and Walker did a stint with zydeco master Clifton Chenier), with nice touches of tenderness ("This Should Go On Forever") and humor ("It's Mighty Crazy"). Overall, a good time is had by all. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars ****1/2. A real good-time CD.......2005-05-17

Not strictly a blues record, "Lone Star Shootout" brings together Lonnie Brooks, Long John Hunter and Phillip Walker for 63 minutes of blues, R&B, soul, rock n' roll, and a little bit of pop. And while "Lone Star Shootout" may be lacking in deep social messages, musically it is a true treat.

There are three numbers where all three go full tilt together, sharing lead vocals; the rest of the material varies in personnel, group and solo emphasis. Lonnie Brooks takes three solo lead vocals and a number of solos, Phillip Walker is the sole lead vocalist on four songs, and Hunter gets three. Guest star Ervin Charles plays lead guitar and sings on the slow soul/blues number "Born Down In Louisiana", and he shares lead vocals with John Hunter on a sturdy rendition of Muddy Waters' "Two Trains Running".

There are a number of slow blues and soul tunes here, but most of the fifteen songs are mid-tempo or faster. The highlights include a very obvious (but very good) Guitar Slim-pastiche titled "A Little More Time", a driving "Roll, Roll, Roll" sung by all three guitarists, the utterly charming 50s soul number "This Should Go On Forever", and the swaggering "Bon Ton Roulet", which features a great horn chart and Marcia Ball rolling the ivories.
Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff plays terrific harmonica on Lonnie Brooks' original "Feel Good Doing Bad", and Marcia Ball provides the wonderful piano solo on the funky New Orleans-R&B of "I Can't Stand It No More". And if this take on Lonesome Sundown's joyous piano boogie "You're Playing Hooky" doesn't make you want to dance, you might very well be dead.

Co-producer Bruce Iglauer's excellent liner notes deserve praise as well, and huge props go out to these three magical sixty-somethings. Blues musicians just seem to get better with age, don't they?

5 out of 5 stars Great Guitars.......2003-02-02

I love the CD. I the song born in Lousiana by:Ervin Charles.
It's was on of the #1 song here in Texas an Lousiana. If you lookin for a great powersound here the CD .Also check out Two Trains Running .

5 out of 5 stars the great blues album ever.......2003-02-02

I think Long Star Shoot Out was great.I really love the solo song born in Lousiana by: Ervin Charles. It's was a great here in Texas and PortBarre,La.
It's REALLY takes you back to wear we come from. Also another great hit on that album is Two Trains Running "Awesome". SHOUT
out to a really great album.

3 out of 5 stars looks can be deceiving.......2000-07-07

By the cover picture, I thought this CD would showcase lots of blues guitar. The music on the CD is good listening, but much of the music style is reminiscent of a big band-lots of horns and 50's style rifs. A much better CD by Lonnie is "Roadhouse Rules".

5 out of 5 stars a well rounded rockin cd for your next party!.......2000-07-01

I`d like to compare this cd to others, but since its all star cast on this labels roster, that could be difficult. This is an extremely upbeat blues CD which would combine Horn and guitar driven blues.Concidering the 3 guitar assault not one of these blues vetereans tries to take over the stage. The incredible horn arrangements led by great session musician Kaz Kavinof is hard to beat. With only 2 ballads out of 15 tracks you can`t go wrong with this all-star blues lineup. This CD is a shoe-in for best blues collaboration come award time.

5 out of 5 stars Lonnie Hunter is alllllll that!.......2000-11-14

Recently Mr. Lonnie Hunter came to our church to do a worship. It was very unfortunate he could only spend two days with us. He has a great personality and can really really sing. He really blessed my soul with his songs. His cd is all that. My favorites are of course Even Me (Drip Drop), I'm Not Tired Yet, Shout Yes! and This is My Prayer.

5 out of 5 stars In a word...EXCELLENCE!.......2003-07-25

After listening to the entire cd, I believe that Lonnie Hunter and the Voices of St. Mark's main goal was to have a little something for everyone. There were songs that will no doubt appeal to the young, middle-aged, and the more mature saints. Songs like, "Let's Dance" gets you fired up, "Get Back Satan" sounds like a song that would have my mother's head moving from side-to-side, I'm in Need of You" touched a very special place within me that confirmed that God is only a whisper away, and "God So Loved the World" inspires and uplifts. No one word can truly express this phenomenal project, but I can honestly say that it was annointed and ordained by the Holy Spirit. Hats off to you Lonnie and the Voices of St. Mark...continue to be lead by the Holy Spirit because the world needs projects like this to help us get through whatever tests that life may have in store for us. God bless your Ministry!
