When Tommy Emmanuel opened this new album with the fire-breathing "Cantina Senese," I suspected he was finally going to do the rip-roaring country-old-timey-Celtic-jazz CD featuring the crowd-pleasing tunes he pulls out during concerts. But it doesn't take him long to slip into the more lyrical playing that has turned up on his recent discs. And that's not a bad thing. Emmanuel is the kind of player who scares other guitarists to death with the range of his influences and the precision of his technique. You can hear both on tracks like "Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag," with Emmanuel doing the 1930s Django Reinhardt thing. But the album is also full of delicate reveries like "The Mystery" and "The Digger's Waltz," the latter based on the military "Taps." The only shortcoming is "Walls," with Emmanuel and his wife, Elizabeth Watkins, in a vocal duet. It's heartfelt but sentimental, and its country-pop sound is like a speed bump in the middle of the disc. But he quickly redeems this "what the hell?" moment with "Lewis & Clark," as he plays gentle cross-rhythms against a melody that unfolds like an epic tale. The Mystery isn't definitive Tommy Emmanuel, but it shows why he's not only one of the finest players, but also one of the most detailed composers for finger-style guitar. --John Diliberto

Finger Lickin' Good!.......2007-05-12
What a player! This is a must have for any guitar fan! It's hard to believe all of this is done by finger picking. Chet Atkins found a gold mine in Tommy Emmanuel! This guy can flat play! He is so good that I don't care for the songs that have vocals. All I want to hear is his guitar! This is the first CD of his that I have bought, and I will be buying the rest of his arsenal. I was totally impressed and I'm more of an electric guitar fan. But, I apprciate any talented virtuoso styles. If you like guitar music, then check this guy out!
Great CD.......2007-01-16
This is a fabulous cd. It is no wonder he has been nominatted for a Grammy Award.
Tommy is brilliant.......2007-01-11
I just recently was exposed to this great artist when I saw a TV special on PBS. He impressed me so much I bought "Mystery", and after listening to it bought a second CD, "Midnight Drive". I am amazed at the sounds Tommy produces with his guitar on "Mystery". The music is beautiful and thoughtful. His music has a classical feeling, while remaining at grass roots level. No guiitar music lover should be without "Mystery" for their collection.
Tommy rules.......2007-01-10
Tommy Emmanuel is THE top guitar player. His music is great to listen to and his concerts are amazing. He puts his soul into his music and you can definately hear that in this CD. A must listen to.
Great !.......2007-01-10
My favorite : The Mystery ... a very great guitar player , you'll appreciate his smooth and free playing . I've been told he might have been created by an extraterrestrian experience for having such fast and long fingers...

Tommy Emmanuel is a veteran acoustic guitar player from Australia, where he's reputed to be a legend. He's written pop songs for Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau, and Sheena Easton and released skillfully played, if generic, smooth jazz albums. But it's as a solo acoustic finger-style player that Emmanuel makes jaws drop, and that's all you hear on this brilliant album. Emmanuel is an eclectic guitarist whose playing is infused with old-timey jazz on "Timberlake Road," New Age melodicism on "Those Who Wait," and a Celtic-classical tinge on "Padre." Emmanuel is capable of a dizzying array of harmonic effects, off-hand ornamentation, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and just about anything else you can do on an acoustic guitar. But while it's the technique that amazes, it's the songs that keep drawing you back with their intricate melodic invention. Perhaps because he's an unrepentant punster, Emmanuel is able to create just enough distance, with a cocked sideways glance, to keep his music on the right side of the line between sentimental and sublime. --John Diliberto
Album Description
2002 release from the native Australian who has 4 Platinum & 3 Gold albums. This is his first solo acoustic album and finally being released internationally on Steve Vai's Newly created Favored Nations Acoustic imprint. HDCD.

This man plays the music of my soul. Every song is happy, soothing, and pleasent to listen to.
My favorite.......2007-01-10
A book of songs in this album have been edited so you can try and play as he does ... so bad it's a bit hard to have the same velocity as he does. Here Luttrel for a smart sample.
The Best.......2006-05-22
The best acoustic guitar playing I've heard to date. Absolutely beautiful! Every aspiring guitar player should own and treasure this CD.
Amazing!!.......2006-05-04
This album is absolutely amazing! Technically and melodically remarkable. The sound is difficult to explain. You really must just listen to understand the beauty of this album. The tracks range from ballad to all out jams. Highly recommended!
Guitaer wizardry.......2006-02-28
Tommy Emmanuel is in my opinion a giant amongst giants. This CD is not only technically fantastic but is smooth and silky as well.

Endless Road.......2007-06-18
This album first captivated me for Tommy's sheer technical wizardry. After watching his early 2007 concert in Atlanta, and thereafter reading up more on whom I consider a music phenomenon, I began to understand why I could listen to this album in its entirety on a regular basis (it's become a permanent resident of my car's CD changer). Tommy seems to be able to tell a story with each song, with notes or measures emoted like words. Amazing. I'll venture to say, as a guitarist myself who strives to do so, that Tommy has gone beyond virtuosity to using guitar music as a language.
Some favorites are "Bella Soave" where Tommy slips in contrasty chord transitions, "Angelina" - whose universal likability is confirmed by several guitarists doing it on YouTube, and "Struttin," which creates a 20s imagery.
A musical treasure, in my opinion.
Tommy Emmanuel.......2007-01-24
Tommy's a fantastic guitarist. You have to see him life to appreciate his guitar talent. This is another CD that doesn't do him justice.
Dear Future Tommy Emmanuel Fan.......2007-01-17
If you love acoustic guitar, this album is definitely for you. Tommy Emmanuel can play with the best of them. Just turn up the volume and let the acoustic sound wash over you.
This is almost a totally solo album, with the exception of backup vocals on "I Still Can't Say Goodbye". Several of the songs follow the fingerstyle of Chet Atkins, and others follow the style of Merle Travis. Highlights include: "(The Man With The) Green Thumb", "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (this arrangement alone is worth the price of the album), as well as the title track "Endless Road".
If you're a long time Tommy Emmanuel fan and you don't yet have this album, don't hesitate to get it. It continues Tommy's very high standard for acoustic guitar music. If you're not a Tommy Emmanuel fan yet, but you've loved the guitar music of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, then this album is definitely for you. If you're new to acoustic guitar music altogether, then this is still a good place to start. I recommend this album as well as Tommy's new album "The Mystery". Buy both of them, and if you're not hooked, then, to coin a phrase, check your pulse.
Perfect Road Trip Music.......2007-01-12
The album "Endless Road" is a very satisfying blend of contemporary, jazz and "controlled jamming" music. It is one of the few albums I can listen to in its entirety and repeatedly. The first time I heard Emmanuel's "Over the Rainbow", I had to pull off the road and wait for the radio to identify the artist. It is shear acoustic artistry! The balance of the album is not remakes of earlier or familiar tunes, and each cut is sufficiently unique and satisfying to play during long commutes/drives or when needing time to think things over or when your spirits need a gentle uplift!
Perfection.......2007-01-11
According to Chet Atkins and myself Tommy Emmanuel is the greatest living guitar player. This disk is no exception. Tommy sits there and plays and you think there are many guitars playing at once. Everyone should have a chance to hear him.

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson has been scantily represented on CD, and that makes this gorgeous, deeply felt release all the more valuable. Here she sings two Bach cantatas composed for solo voice. Her mezzo is not particularly heavy, but it can darken or lighten expressively, and she uses its dusky qualities handsomely. Ich habe genug was originally written for solo bass, but Bach revised it a few years later. The way the voice works with and around a solo oboe (amid the accompanying strings) is beautiful. Of particular note are the aria "Schlummert ein"--a lullaby which Lieberson sings with a long, sustained, hushed tone--and the final aria, in which the singer looks forward to her death and eternal peace; the latter is remarkable for its joyful, flowery vocal line, as upbeat as the lullaby is serene. Lieberson catches the mood, and her rhythmic accuracy, leaning on the beat, brings out the joy in the singer's religious fervor. The second cantata, similarly scored with a prominent solo oboe, begins with a recitative ("My heart swims in blood") and is a confession of guilt; by its close the tone has again turned vivacious, as the sinner looks forward to salvation. Lieberson's voice is capable of level upon level of dynamics, her soft singing is as impressive as her more outgoing expressions. This is a beautiful disc from an important singer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
PROFILES OF BACH.......2007-06-29
My appreciation of the infinite musical genius of Bach only gains from hearing him interpreted by different artists. I already owned two formidable accounts of cantata 82, one from the great tenor Ian Bostridge in his debut disc, the other from a great bass (the work was originally written for a bass soloist) John Shirley-Quirk. Shirley-Quirk's performance dates from 1965, but he performs with the Academy of St Martin's under Marriner, and they were already committed to an `authentic' style in Bach and Handel. The authentic movement rapidly became `still more authentic' in the hands of, say, McCreesh, but Bostridge and Europa Galante in 2000, and now Hunt Lieberson with her Boston associates two years later, have settled for much the same style as Marriner's. She thus faces formidable competition (if that is any way to look at the matter), but the comparisons only invite gratitude and applause for the special excellence that each exhibits.
One thing that gives this disc a special appeal for me is that the instrumentalists are apparently freelancers. They are totally professional, but the professionalism manages to be combined with the special sense of enthusiasm that I associate more with good amateur music-making, a feeling of individuals coming together to make music together rather than the atmosphere of a band with contracts of tenure. The lengthy and garrulous liner-note tells us all about it, as well as much else. Lieberson's tempi are rather faster than those in the other sets, and the engineers have given her a more forward balance. No complaints from me, not when it is a voice like this. For exquisite vocal sound may I recommend in particular her low notes on `Schlummert ein' and the heavenly treatment of the imperfect cadence (a technical term of course) at `selig zu'.
I have no other account of cantata 199, an earlier work and not quite the equal of its great companion here. That makes this one all the more welcome, and the performance is fully on a par with the other. One interesting point is that the chorale is sung by Lieberson on her own, but as you might expect that gives me no kind of problem. This music is all radiant with Bach's perception of death as a gateway to final fulfilment, and it would be a very dull sort of atheist who can't sense and share the sheer transcendental greatness of the inspiration.
The recorded sound is just fine by me, provided there is no objection to the forward recording of the soloist, which is not overdone in the old manner by any means. The liner note is nothing if not informative, and I urge you to get through it to the end, with the help of a drink if necessary. Bach would not mind that in the least, if certain anecdotes about him are to be believed. Above all, this disc has brought the voice and musicianship of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson into my collection and into my home for the first time, and for that Wie freudig ist mein Herz.
Sublime!.......2007-05-13
Gorgeous phrasing, clear and crisp articulation of the musical intentions and a wonderful unity of ensemble. These are powerful emotional interpretations that will bring you to tears but there is no excessive romantic license taken, only a solid adherence to the rhythmic pulse and directionality of the harmonies. This is what the magic of music is all about with Bach, transforming us from base and despicable creatures into something divine, an alchemical procedure which this ensemble and Hunt-Lieberson perform with absolute mastery and transcendence. A great introduction for anyone who wants to become familiar with Bach's vocal works.
Ich habe genug - I have enough.......2007-02-19
I do not feel qualified to review this item but I find it sublime personally.
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson - Bach Cantatas.......2007-01-11
I first heard Hunt Lieberson only a few months ago, and was immediately moved by her voice and musicianship. These Bach Cantatas display an emotional and spiritual range and intensity that is at times unbearable. Her tragic personal story - she died recently after a struggle with cancer - lends an uncanny quality to the way she sings of suffering, despair and hope. The words never before held such depth. A profound experience.
Beautiful.......2007-01-05
I heard this recording on my public station and had to go and immediately buy it. This is one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard. Her voice is magical. I am not even an operatic afficianado and I love this CD.

Customer Reviews:
It leaves you feeling exhausted!.......2007-05-31
I've been following Tommy for 30 years, and he NEVER ceases to amaze! How one man can pour so much energy and love into a 2 hour performance night after night is beyond me! I don't know about Tommy being one of the World's great guitarists, he IS the greatest guitarist, and I dare anyone to find a better all-round player anywhere in any genre. Michael Hedges was the only other player who could express his personality and musicianship the way Tommy does, and if this double album doesn't convince you of that, take a look at Tom's concert DVD's. He is a genius musically, as well as being an extremely warm and funny guy at the same time. A rare combination. You're a great ambassador for Oz, Tom. Keep 'em rolling out. (If you enjoyed this album, and you haven't listened to "ONLY", do yourself a favor and buy it now!)
Tommy's live and still knows how to play!.......2007-01-10
While a few years old, Tommy still has that magic when it comes to his Maton, not to mention his disconnected bass line provided by Thomas Thumb! Great album which shows what most people know, Tommy cannot only produce great studio albums, he is one of the best live entertainers and players around. By the way Tommy, you need to play more at home in Oz!!!
Simply Amazing.......2006-12-11
This is a tremendous value, considering how many of his "standard" pieces are represented. If you want an introduction to Tommy, this is a good choice. Endless Road would be my other recommendation.
I found the musicality to be first rate, yet the mixdown suffered from what I assume was less than ideal recording environment. Tommy plays through a small stage setup with his eq/reverb being pretty much self-contained, and this recording sounds like they got the house mix rather than a more suitable master.
Not to worry, you'll enjoy every minute of it. That's why I gave it 5 stars.

Finger Pickers CD.......2007-04-11
Good response time on the mailing. CD was new and in top shape.
unison is not for masters.......2007-01-11
Both these performers are masters of their style. As such, they should alternate, as in Duel, not try to synchronize. Their individuality gets lost and the personal subtlety makes the music "muddy" The result was only good, not great.
Most enjoyable.......2005-09-04
First the bad news - the title track is terrible. Singing is not the forte of these gentlemen. But picking is. Which brings us neatly to the good news - the playing is excellent. To an ex-inhabitant of Oz, the medley "Waltzing Matilda"/"The road to Gundagai" (the NSW country town unfortunately spelt incorrectly) was especially enjoyable.
Additionally, this is an especially precious CD, because I've been told that it was the last thing Chet Atkins ever recorded. The cancer that was to take his life was well advanced at this stage.
The Day Finger Pickers Took Over The World.......2005-07-20
I bought this cd for my father for fathers day. I was raised listening to Chet and Doc Watson and various bluegrass. This is a great album. 100% bonafied finger pickin' heaven.
Très bien ..........2004-09-29
J'aime bien cet CD. Tommy et Chet sont de très bons artistes. Ce CD s'écoute très bien mais je trouve une peu trop "country" certaines plages. Un 8 sur 10 quand même. Bravo!

Blessed.......2007-06-15
Only the "Holy Spirit" could inspire such a work, listening to these Hymns evokes "HIM" I would pray that many would be compatible with the fine heavenly harmonice on this C D.

Better than Klonopin.......2007-01-16
I read a transcript of an NPR review that said Beth Nielsen Chapman meditated each day at the studio while she was recording this album. It shows. It calms and centers me within 30 seconds. Highly recommended
Good voice, but the venerable texts deserve better pronunciation.......2006-11-12
Beth Chapman has a beautiful voice which is well suited to the hymns she chose for this record, but her pronunciation of Latin is only beginner's-level, and it shows that this isn't her usual genre of music. Several of the hymns contain pronunciation mistakes which will be off-putting to people who know these songs well; they all bear the sound of Latin as sung with a very American accent.
The singers on this recording could have benefited from some pronunciation coaching: classical singers need to learn to pronounce Latin well, but Chapman didn't seem to realize they needed it too.
Spiritual oxygen........2006-10-17
Mother Teresa of Calcutta said, "Make something beautiful for God." Beth Chapman must have been listening when she produced this collection of hymns. Because of B.N.C.'s experience of personal heart-ache that preceded this recording, there's a touching dose of holy sobriety in her delivery. After listening to some snippets on-line, I first bought this for my Mom who is in her 70s. Since I finally bought another copy for myself a few weeks ago, it has dominated my car CD player. My 28 year old son, who doesn't know this pre-Vatican II repertoire, absolutely loves it. This is timeless, edifying stuff -- no artificial ingredients. Thank you, Beth. I'm so glad I found your Hymns project.
Breathtaking renditions of sacred music.......2006-07-05
Chapman takes some of the Christendom's most beautiful music and lends a simple reverence to it that works wonderfully well. She's also written a very sweet new hymn to Mary. I buy virtually no music - my collection is already sufficient. But I only had to hear a bit of one song - Panis Angelicus - to get me onto iTunes for this album.
Every single song is perfectly lovely: quiet and rousing, simple and complex, altogether reverent.

One of Two Versions.......2007-01-31
This excellent 2-disc version has 18 tracks.
Another version, containing 26 tracks, is available on iTunes for $19.98. It contains additional tracks from Lucie de Lammermoor and Die Zauberflote (Der Holle Rache should not be missed!).
Wonderful introduction to "The Art of Dessay".......2007-01-21
Natalie Dessay's "The Miracle of the Voice" is a welcome addition to the recording oeuvre. She covers much territory in this 2 CD work--from Offenbach to Donizetti to Gounod to Delibes to Massenet to Stravinsky and Bernstein (Candide). I'll mention sample selections below, rather than going through each one separately.
She shows the ability to do well in the bel canto repertoire, featuring an agile, light voice that can get to the high notes and master coloratura techniques (trills and so on). In "The Bell Song" from Delibes "Lakme," her clear voice handles this work well. Fleming and Sutherland have darker voices; Dessay's is quite a bit lighter, more typical of what we think of as a coloratura voice (even though coloratura singing is manifest from basses to sopranos). She demonstrates nice trills and an ability to hit high notes accurately. In "Olympia's Song" from Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffman," she captures nicely the "mechanical" voice of her character. Once more, nice trills and agility with the notes.
Of course, the "Mad Scene" from Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" (here, sung in French) is prime coloratura territory. Dessay essays this nicely. In the slower earlier parts of this long scene, she shows a certain pathos, appropriate for a young woman who has gone mad over love and betrayal. When she gets to what in Italian would be "Spargi d'amaro pianto," she does well. Again, she exemplifies agile vocal technique. The second time through, she displays nice ornamentation. Given that she can trill well, it is somewhat surprising that this technique is not deployed better and more often. Nonetheless, well done.
From Mozart's "Die Zauberflote," Dessay takes on The Queen of the Night's "Der Holle Rache." Again, well done. She hits the high notes easily and without strain (not something that all sopranos can say). And now for something completely different. . . . Johann Strauss' "Fruhlingsstimmenwalzer." A delightful romp. A Strauss waltz. Nice vocal technique. One wonders if Dessay could not have made this more "fun," since it is a waltz. Nonetheless, this is an easy and pleasant "listen." I once heard (is my memory correct on the name?) Theresa Stich-Randall sing this, and the effect was similar.
Stravinsky's "Song of the Nightingale" from "Le Rossignol" is another change of pace. Nessay shows the range of her repertoire with this piece. Thelonius Monk's "'Round Midnight" was adopted for the French language here, with Claude Nougaro joining Dessay on vocals. Another interesting departure from the earlier operatic sound--an engaging piece. Her operatic skills do not overwhelm this song or work against Nougaro's voice. Finally, Leonard Bernstein's "Glitter and Be Gay" from "Candide." This is a credible effort at somewhat lighter music, while she still exhibits the vocal skills that she has.
This is the first CD from Dessay that I have listened to. It won't be the last. A remarkable range of singing, done well across a variety of genres. This is a good introduction to the art of Dessay for those who have not heard her before.

Customer Reviews:
Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07
Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!
Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.
The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.
There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.
Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.
40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21
This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....
Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01
If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".
Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17
A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.
The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)
BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.
Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.
