God bless punk and new wave. Without them, '80s pop music might well have ended up as vapid and ghettoized as, well, pop music of the '90s. Those late '70s movements were frankly reactionary at heart (seeking to counter what was perceived as the overwrought tendencies of rock's prog and hard-rock elite and calling for a return to the diverse energy of '60s Top 40), but their influences can be felt on nearly every cut of this triple-disc hits anthology, from the Buggles' all-too-prophetic "Video Killed the Radio Star" to the nouveau funk of Kool and the Gang, the Dazz Band, and the Gap Band, to the nascent big-hairdom of Night Ranger ("Sister Christian") and Whitesnake. If you're looking for the roots of alternative rock or obscure college playlist fodder, look elsewhere; this is prime-time '80s pop chart glory, as seen on MTV (over and over and over). Though the songs here cover a breadth of style and genre (if not necessarily substance), there's a remarkable unity of purpose and hook-laden musical accomplishment that's sorely missed. If this collection woefully shortchanges hip-hop, it still underscores a distinctly irony-free era where style admittedly triumphed over substance, as opposed to the '90s, where style caricatured substance. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
I love the 80s!.......2007-01-15
This boxed set has all of your favorites from the 80s. I bought it for my sister for Christmas and we listened to it over and over again on New Year's Eve and beyond. Every song brought back a memory from the "old days" and made us smile. What a great way to start the new year!
Gotta Have My 80's.......2007-01-12
GREAT CD, a must have if you are into the 80's music.
This album has a bunch of good songs, but a few sucky ones.......2005-11-05
I luuuuv some of these songs, but some of them suck. hoever, if u like these songs u should totally get it!
essential.......2005-09-16
I mix 80s dance music and the number of times when mixing that I find myself reaching for either this compilation or its companion, "Hit Me With Your 80s Box," is extraordinary. These are two outstanding collections. They are pricey, but worth every penny. For many people, owning these two will be all the 80s music you'll ever need.
Fidelity is outstanding, the tracks are well organized more or less chronologically, and the sequences in which tracks are placed is excellent. The "box" itself in which the 3 CDs come is sturdy, it is easily folded out in part or in whole to access any of the CDs quickly and easily (unlike many multi-CD offerings). Liner notes are extensive and interesting.
This offering is a class act all the way. Highly, highly recommended. 7 stars.
LOVE 80s music.......2005-08-02
I am such an 80s child. This box set is great. Has a lot of the great songs of the 80s.

Excellent Work.......2007-07-13
The CD I received came to me in excellent condition. The product was unmarred. I will definitely buy from this seller again and I will also recommend them to others. KD
One Hit Wonder?.......2007-06-19
I'm not sure what the "Other Hits" metioned in the title of this CD are as no other tracks on it showcase Renee Diggs' awesome vocal talent better than "Object of My Desire." I still think of Teena Marie when I hear it.
Real R&b music!.......2007-05-11
This C.d have all of starpoint's greatest hits. And I do mean GREATEST. If you are studying old school music, Or taking a trip down memory lane. Grab this one!!!! The title says It all.....Object of my desire, "Baby"...Light My fire!
Excellent 80's CD.......2007-02-13
I have been trying to get this on CD for quite a while; I think that Renee Diggs was one of the most powerful female vocalists of our time, who unfortunately didn't get the chance to prove it. My favorite songs on the CD are "The More We Love" and "Am I Still The One?" I recommend this cd to any and everyone who loves the 80's!
Starpoint..........2007-01-31
I can't add much, except to say, this is a good collection - and the price is "dirt cheap" considering what people are trying to get for the original albums (on CD)! Buy this collection and you, too, can reap the maximum bang for your buck! Four stars!

One of Joe's best !!!.......2007-07-09
Great new stuff by Mr. Cocker.
He gets better with age.
One of Joe's finest !!!!
Joe Cocker keeps getting better.......2007-05-15
I am a long time fan of Joe Cocker. He just seems to get better and better, I think his voice has improved through the years. Favorite songs on the album: "Beware of Darkness" and "Just pass it on". "Just pass it on" is really unusual for a Joe cocker song, but I really enjoyed it.
Vintage sound........2007-05-01
Bringing Joe Cocker together with producer Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Ray Lamontagne) was the best thing to happen to the Sheffield-born singer on a musical level for a very long time.
Johns assembled a stellar cast of veteran musicians around the white soul legend and the results are impressive.
Generating a vintage, timeless sound around his gravel throated soulful voice Joe Cocker puts his distinctive stamp on choice songs like Dan Penn's "Don't Give Up On Me", Dylan's "Ring Them Bells" and John Fogerty's "Long As I Can See The Light".
Standout Track: "Don't Give Up On Me".
Hymn For My Soul Is Outstanding!.......2007-04-06
"Hymn For My Soul" is one of the finest albums Joe Cocker has ever released. And, he has found the perfect producer for this stage of his career - Ethan Johns. Together, they have created a masterpiece. It is my hope that this partnership will remain in force for a long time.
What makes this album great is a back to basics approach. The album was recorded on tape, with Joe and the musicians all in the same room, and Joe singing live with the band. This brings out the best in Joe's voice. All the nooks and crannies are there, and there is great warmth and presence in the sound. There are no computers, no multi-layered arrangements, and there isn't the slick adult contemporary feel that has been present on recent albums. What we have is Joe singing R&B and ballads as only he can. His voice remains powerful, yet at the same time he is capable of great sensitivity. That is what sets Joe apart from all of the pretenders.
Joe puts his imprint on songs from Stevie Wonder (You Haven't Done Nothin'), Bob Dylan (Ring Them Bells), George Harrison (Beware Of Darkness), John Fogerty (Long As I Can See The Light), The Meters (Love Is For Me), Percy Mayfield (River's Invitation), Solomon Burke (Don't Give Up On Me), The Subdudes (One Word - Peace), old friend Daniel Moore (Just Pass It On), and the title track by Andy Fairweather Low. These are, in many cases, unexpected and inspired song choices.
Some will complain about another "covers" album, but they don't get what Joe is all about. While he has put out a lot of memorable original material, he is at his best when he takes a great song introduced by someone else and sings it his way. After all, isn't that what great interpretive singers do? Would anybody criticize Sinatra for not writing his own material? Others will muse, "there are no true rock songs". Well, Joe has never been a pure rocker. He has always mixed rock, ballads, R&B, even a tinge of country, going back to his days in Sheffield. What is important here is that Joe is singing great, the musicianship is fantastic, and the album is beautifully recorded. At 63, he is showing that he still has it, and has a lot left in the tank.
Right now, HFMS is available only as an import, and will probably released in the US late this year. Hopefully, this album will be the one to catapult Joe back in to the spotlight in the US, and compel the Rock Hall Of Fame and the Grammys to finally give Joe Cocker the recognition he deserves.
COCKER GOES TO CHURCH WITH HYMN - JOIN HIM.......2007-04-03
Finishing up his fourth decade of recording, the original Mad Dog and Englishman, at times better known for performances masquerading as epileptic fits and a growl with enough grit to use as sandpaper, Joe Cocker has survived and thrived as an ultimate interpreter of other people's songs, bringing to them a power and vulnerability that few singers can match.
He's back again with a new collection with less grit but no less passion wrapped in crystal clear production that shows off his still compelling voice off to it best advantage. Every selection either has a bluesy, elegaic, or gospel tone and is done well.
As usual Joe shines with his cover versions and there are plenty here to carry on that tradition - Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothing," George Harrison's "Beware Of Darkness," and Percy Mayfield's "River's Invitation." John Fogerty's "Long As I Can See The Light" is re-imagined as a religious dirge and Andy Fairweather Low (of Amen Corner and later back-up guitarist/vocalist for Eric Clapton) provides Joe with the tour de force title tune "Hymn 4 The Soul."
There's more treasure to be dug here, particularly "One Word (Peace)" which, if I had my way, would be playing on every radio station from here to Timbuktu. It is a fervent plea for peace in a world where war and terrorisn is now in everyone's backyard.
For Joe Cocker fans and people who like the blues and brilliant interpretors.

After four decades toiling in the record business with little more than a fervent cult following to show for it, Bettye LaVette can seem like soul music's equivalent of Roy Hobbs, protagonist of the bittersweet baseball fable The Natural. Whether this riveting collection of ten covers by an eclectic range of contemporary female singer/songwriters will change the husky-throated Detroit native's fortunes seems irrelevant: Its spare, dusky groove and intensely emotional, in-the-moment performances seem utterly disconnected from concerns as trivial as fame and fashion. A forceful, timely reminder that soul thrives on the singer and not the song, LaVette doesn't so much cover these songs as reinvent them from the inside out, be it the chilling, a capella read of Sinead O'Connor's "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" that opens the album, a gritty take of Lucinda Williams' "Joy" where the singer burns with a fire that might make Tina Turner envious or her recasting Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow" as bluesy omen and "How Am I Different" by Aimee Mann as inviting, r&b shuffle. In a musical era where soulful authenticity and emotional resonance are too often virtual, this album is a delicious dose of the Real Deal. -- Jerry McCulley
Album Description
With one eye on the intimate concept albums Sinatra invented at mid-'50s Capitol, and the other on the gritty yet sophisticated soul records produced at Atlantic in the '60s, this release offers ten songs that tell the story of Bettye LaVette. Recording stints at Motown, Atlantic, Epic, and a host of smaller labels left her with dreams to burn, and she pours every moment of hope and heartbreak from her 44 years in music into her tough-minded new collection. Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices. For every moment of fear and loss, there's an answering moment of triumph and defiance. The songs are from such artists as Sinead O'Connor, Lucinda Williams, Joan Armatrading, Rosanne Cash, Dolly Parton, Aimee Mann, and more.
Customer Reviews:
great album.......2007-06-14
I heard a couple of samples of Betty LaVette on a website. I really enjoed what I heard so I bought the album.
It was good investment, the album is great, it takes a bit of listening to, and you need to take time out to listen to it, it is not background music. Enjoy
Amazing woman..........2006-07-05
If you're a fan of classic soul, this womans work is a must in your collection. Her powerful, raspy, raw voice, together with some amazing lyrics will have you listening to these tracks over and over. Check out 'Down to Zero'... I can't stop listening!
Betty Lavette.......2006-07-04
I had not heard her before, only read about her. I discovered I don't really like her! Just don't like the style
Excellent!.......2006-06-30
This CD was one that Amazon prompted me to consider based on the "people like you bought this" technology. And lo and behold, they were spot on! I like to play this CD while working out--nothing like "Joy" or "Why am I Different" to get the blood going. Yes, these songs are "he done me wrong" songs but so what? This is what women talk (and evidently, sing) about.
There are only two songs on the album that I would say are 4 stars as opposed to 5--the opening song by Sinead O'Conner and the closing song by Fiona Apple. It's not that these are bad songs just that Bettye LaVette's interpretation of them was not quite what I was expecting. But that's me...others here seem to like them quite a bit.
Outstanding CD but Amazon's Product Review is PC lame!.......2006-05-16
Let's get the quick negative out of the way first. In Amazon's Product Description, the anonymous writer opines, "Choosing only songs written by female artists, she spins the tale of a woman in a world where men make the choices." Really? Were you told to say that at the last NOW meeting? Why is male-bashing a part of a "product description"? Shame on Amazon for allowing Political Correctness to run amok.
Now, on to the CD.
If you grew up listening to music in any large, gritty, urban area, you can't avoid music like this - nor would you want to. Motown and Stax are the foundation for the pure soul unearthed in this music. It'll grab you, twirl you around, and make you dizzy with delight. Hypnotic in every way, from the vocals to the arrangements, it's bound to spend months non-stop in your CD player. It's music you can introduce to your friends and they'll thank you a thousand times over.
Put it on, clear your calander, and enjoy the ride. Highly recommended.

Josh Groban fans who caught the singer's 2004 Closer tour would no doubt take note of Lucia Micarelli, who was the violinist and concertmaster for Groban. Like her boss, who also is executive producer of Music From A Farther Room, Micarelli is a young, attractive, and talented player who has the classical training, but who is also enchanted with pop music. Also like her boss, her strain of classical crossover works thanks to tasteful accompaniment, in this case from arranger/composer Paul Schwartz. The smartly chosen program of material comes from such varied catalogs as David Bowie and Rogers and Hart. Micarelli's playing is emotional without being overreaching, assertive when called upon, and nuanced. When she does go over-the-top pop on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," it's brief but fun; when she navigates Piazzolla's "Oblivion" she draws upon the song's passion more than its technical requisites. This is a debut with likeable pizzazz, coming in a genre not often enough known for it. -- Tad Hendrickson
Album Description
For anyone who has attended Josh Groban's phenomenal live show, you will have undoubtedly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing his lead violinist, Lucia Micarelli. Lucia came to Josh's tour after appearing with the Trans- Siberian Orchestra playing arenas across the U.S. in 2003. With the close of the second leg of Josh's tour, Lucia is recording her debut album in New York and London with producer Paul Schwartz. Musical selections will range from the works of composers Ravel and Ennio Morricone to David Bowie.

Nice CD.......2007-07-15
This is one of my favorite CDs in my collection. I saw her play in person, and Live is much, much better then the CD.
Music from a Farther Room.......2007-05-22
I heard Lucia Micarelli during a 2007 Josh Groban concert. Her live solo performance in addition to her backgrounds for Groban were mesmerizing. I purchased this album to see if it was as enjoyable as her live work, and I was not disappointed. Micarelli performs a good mix of classical and pop pieces. My favorite tracks on the album are Smarkland, Meditation, Lady Grinning Soul, Portrait, and Nocturne/Bohemian Rhapsody.
relaxation.......2007-05-13
This CD is very well done. I was familiar with old favorites and delighted with new songs. I would like to hear more of the rock songs preformed by her. I think she's got a lot of talent and could possibly do well with the rock songs on a future album.
amazing.......2007-05-07
Lucia has power in her playing. I think that she shouldn't be allowed to play violin this good. Her raw talent is conveyed in every song. She doesn't just stick to classical, as the accompaniment music isn't just strings. I wished she had played a little more in Bohemian Rhapsody. I saw her in concert with Josh Groban and I knew I had to purchase this CD. Lucia is an inspiration and her love for the violin cannot be contained.
Talented violinist.......2007-03-29
When I saw and heard Lucia Micarelli perform with Josh Groban at a recent concert, I was so impressed with her talent, that I immediately went online to see what music of hers was available. Every item on her CD is wonderful, and I'm looking forward to her next CD.

Stevie Wonder was getting his fusion of soul, rock, and various other styles together when Music of My Mind appeared in early 1972. A bit shapeless compared with Talking Book, the masterpiece he'd release by the end of the year, this disc nonetheless finds the then-21-year-old self-assuredly deploying an array of synthesized textures and natural voices: check out the drawl lurking around the edges of "Sweet Little Girl." Not an essential album, but an entertaining one--and one that, in retrospect, carried enormous implications for the future of American music. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
A QUANTUM LEAP FOR STEVIE.......2007-02-23
I WOULDN'T SAY THAT WITH THIS ALBUM, STEVIE WONDER CAME INTO HIS OWN, BECAUSE HE HAD RECORDED A LOT OF FANTASTIC MUSIC BEFORE THIS, BUT THIS ONE TAKES HIS MUSIC TO A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. I HAVE HAD THIS ALBUM, CASSETTE, CD, SINCE IT CAME BACK LONGER THAN I CARE TO REMEMBER. THIS ALBUM WAS THE STEPPING STONE TO TALKING BOOK AND INNER VISIONS, WHICH WERE ALSO ALL TIME CLASSIC RECODRINGS. IF I HAD TO DESCRIBE THIS CD, I WOULD SAY IT WAS THE FIRST ONE THAT REALLY FEATURED THE MATURE VOICE OF STEVIE WONDER.
An absolute beauty.......2007-02-11
Dear fellow music-lovers:
Even though some music-critics think that Music Of My Mind is inferior to Talking Book, I would urge you to take a plunge into this record.
It's Stevie at his very best. Lovely melodies, unheard-of harmonies, only the drum is out of beat once in a while. But then: this is the music they played in the 70's - it's entirely without computing, and therefore as real as the hum of beas!
Stevie is impressively inspired, at his most sensual. This record is outstanding; every song has its high moments.
I hear myself humming those tunes over and over - more than 35 years after recording.
It's a record for all time. Why don't you make it your own soundtrack?
Superwoman (Where were you when I needed you).......2006-09-14
... this song Superwoman (Where were you when I needed you)... if you don't allready know it will blow your mind.. get it
Good but not Great.......2005-08-15
Are there lots of good songs on this Cd? Yes of Course. There some songs that haven't aged at all. Most songs are great soul and R&B. Girl Blue lyrically is the best song i have ever heard, to bad he decided to play around with the synthesisers to much!
This isn't a Stevie wonder album i would start on, his others are much stronger 1-10. Some of these songs just aren't that good.
Essential.......2005-04-23
Music of My Mind is Stevie Wonder's first fully-successful recording in which he assumed complete artistic control. Recorded at the start of the 70s, when the singer-songwriter-multi-intstrumentalist was not yet 25, this suite of songs sounds remarkably fresh and relevant; and its arrangments transcend whatever changes in musical tastes have rendered so many lesser recordings from lesser artists of the day passe.
Despite its lack of any obvious hit single (the album's catchiest songs far exceed the four-minute mark), Music of My Mind is an essential recording. From the celebratory opener, "Love Having You Around" to the emotionally raw indictment of "Superwoman," to the rousing r and b shouter "Keep on Running," Wonder manages to extend and develop catchy songs into full-blown mini-epics. The shorter songs here are equally impressive: "Evil," the album's closer, is sung with such conviction, such faith, that it's difficult not to get caught up with Wonder's vision for a more healing, loving world; "Been So Long" and "Love Everything About You" are two distinct variations on romance--one moody and introspective, the other playful and light; and even a gag tune like "Sweet Little Girl," which functions in part as a powerful satire on blacksploitation, is too ingratiating to dismiss.
A must-have for any music collector.

On this third installment of the Ally McBeal soundtracks series, featured performer Vonda Shepard delivers another solid collection of emotive blues- and country-inflected power ballads. The surprises here are the three tracks sung by the TV show's guest thespian Robert Downey Jr. If this soundtrack was intended to be a star vehicle, it's a jalopy. Downey's contrived rasp, hardened vocals, and awkward phrasing fail to impress (proving that the elongating line of talented actors with musical aspirations should confine their singing fantasies to the shower). On his dumbed-down duet with Sting on the Police classic "Every Breath You Take," Downey sounds like he's straining to emulate Sting, and Sting approaches the song as a walk-through. Fortunately, Barry White's mirror-ball hit "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" and Tina Turner's anthemic "When the Heartache Is Over" provide some much-needed uptempo relief from the album's sluggish middle section. The collection heads home with Shepard and label newbie Anastacia covering Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive" in dance-floor-lite funk (although it suffers the unfortunate coincidence of being released in proximity to Joan Osborne's superior rendition from One Night at McCool's). The CD closes with Shepard's well-orchestrated interpretation of Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends," and Ally McBeal fans, despite the Downey debacle, should be able to answer affirmatively with little hesitation. --Beth Massa
Customer Reviews:
Good grooves, chill and enjoy.......2004-08-22
I enjoyed this cd more than I thought I would - not being that much of an Ally McBeal fan. Vonda Shepard has an impressive voice and Robert Downey Jr was surprisingly good also! Al Green, Sting and Tina Turner topped it off perfectly. Good kick back and chill music.
Great CD, especially for Ally McBeal fans!!.......2004-01-03
I really liked the songs on this CD as they relate to the show Ally McBeal of which I was a big fan.
I think Robert Downey Jr. is extremely talented musically and wish he would make his own CD. He has showcased his talent in many of his films and plays musical instruments and writes music as well. He has joined Elton John in concert recently. I think he doesn't get enough credit for his abilities both as an actor and a singer.
This CD is great, especially to Ally McBeal fans as I can picture scenes from the show when I hear the songs and it is like reliving some of the great episodes.
If you like Ally you'll love this one.......2004-01-01
It is impossible to listen to these songs without recalling the various episodes in which they were featured. That, of course, is one of the mysterious qualities of music - the evocation of past time, places and events. This really is a good collection of songs, especially from the bitter-sweet entry/exit of Robert Downey, Jr.
I disagree with the Amazon.com reviewer who criticized the performance of both Downey and Sting. I thought them both magnificent. It was quickly apparent that Downey was not a professional singer but the attempt was valiant and almost heroic. I think of all the action that occurred in that bar, how integral it was to the storyline. It was more important than the office in many ways. Barry White and Al Green shined in their solos performances but it is Vonda who carries the day, she being a star unto herself. Great album.
OOOH!! Robert Downey Jr!.......2003-04-12
The duet with Robert Downey Jr. is divine! The rest of the CD isn't bad either! Great gift for any Ally lover.
The Music With Everything.......2003-03-15
David E. Kelley's hit Fox show, "Ally Mcbeal" had everything- romance, heartbreak, comedy, life lessons, joy and sorrow. It was a very human show, a realistic show for all the computer generated illusions and fantasy sequences. The show itself could have been a Broadway musical, for it was brought to life by songs and expressive music of a wide range of emotions. In its fourth season, Ally Mcbeal experienced her second love- with actor Robert Downey Jr. character Larry Paul. Ally and Larry's love was witty, warm but not without its conflict. Larry was previously married and with a daughter and eventually, his life runs a different course and he leaves Ally. The music in this compilation perfectly expresses the experience.
Vonda Shepard, as always, stars in her brilliant renditions of classics and her singing voice is incredibly moving, touching and sentimental, appropriate background music for a show like Ally Mcbeal. She perfectly brings home "For Once In My Life", "Home Again" and "You and Me". Robert Downey Jr has a duet with Sting in "Every Breath You Take", which although with a few flaws, can still impress. Robert Downey Jr himself has a terrific singing voice and manages to dazzle us with "Chances Are". Al Green sings a moving "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart". Tina Turner raises the roof with a sensational "When The Heartache Is Over" and Barry White does the same with "You're My First, My Last, My Everything". But perhaps the most moving of all the songs in the compilation is Vonda Shepard sining "Alone Again Naturally", which begins with a melancholic string section and then becomes a song of woe and pathos, reaching a climax in her lines "There are more hearts broken in this world than can be mended." The show is alive again with all its emotions and ups and downs.

Two stars only.......2007-05-16
One star for Lennon - McCartney cover, second one for Jimmy Page guitar. Unfortunatelly, didn't have a chance to listen to original version (this one is remastered version).
One of Joe Cocker's best.......2007-03-09
When I fist listen to the old vynil LP it seems fantastic to me, now it sounds the same. It's impossibe not to own this CD.
His Best.......2004-11-13
This is Joe's first album and it is his best IMHO. His following release, Joe Cocker, is also highly praised but I think falls a distant second to this one. Alot of soul and great musicians to back him up, including Jimmy Page. This one is great.
Joe Cocker's Terrific Debut.......2004-08-15
WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS is an exceptional debut from Joe Cocker. It contains a wonderful mix of covers and a few originals, and the title cut rips the Beatles' original to shreds any day. Also not to be missed is Cocker's rendition of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", sung to sound like it's coming from an at-heart pacifist who occasionally loses his cool on other people. Pointing out other highlights is pointless, as this album should be taken as a whole.
1969's Rock N Roll Rookie Of The Year!.......2004-02-25
Joe Cocker's 1969 debut album "With a Little Help From My Friends", is without question, one of the greatest debut albums of the classic rock era. This release packs a punch from the very start. Beside the title track, which is one of the most recognized rock songs ever recorded, Joe is simply stunning, on tracks like "Feeling Alright", which also was a huge hit and his version of "Bye Bye Blackbird". His take on Dylan's "I Shall Be Released", and "Just Like A Woman" are some of the most gut wrenching, and emotional versions of these songs ever waxed. At the time of it's release 35 years ago, rock and soul had never been blended, with such power and grace. Jimmy Page and Stevie Winwood along with B.J Wilson and long time Cocker keyboard man Chris Stainton, were all part of the supporting cast, that helped this album become a huge hit, that propelled Joe Cocker to rock stardom, that continues to this day, some 35 years later.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Great type of Jazz........2006-08-17
Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.
A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26
This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.
Fun, soulful, carefree...like the spirit of New Orleans.......2006-07-04
I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!
I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.
Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.
Highly recommended!
This is the Best!.......2005-01-20
I own three of BBVD's CDs and this one is the best. You just have to move those feet! I just love these guys.
Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14
I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!
