What Operation Ivy is to the latter-day ska revival, Gogol Bordello is to the increasingly popular revival of Eastern European music. Blending gypsy rhythms with the intensity of alternative-rock, metal (and even rap), the group is justly renown for their charged live performances. The title track is a lovely mix of Balkan strings with pleasant screams from lead singer/ shouter Eugene Hutz. If only more of the songs followed its lead. As a whole, the album sounds like Leftie bumper stickers set to vaguely aggro "gypsy rock." "My Strange Uncles from Abroad" makes its political statement in a personal and affecting manner, but other tunes such as "Forces of Victory" are merely affected. It's hard not to agree with their world view or love for the woozy sounds of Eastern Europe. But on this album, GB make the Dead Kennedys seem subtle. And it would be nice if there were more variety to their sound. Perhaps they should collaborate with Beirut, Muzsikas, or Hawk and a Hacksaw next time? --Mike McGonigal

Gogol Bordello has been breaking down musical barriers since 1999 with a supercharged music based on a brutal gypsy two step rhythm that sounds like an Eastern European cousin of ska, augmented by punk, metal, rap, flamenco, roots reggae, Italian spaghetti western twang, dub, and other sounds generated by gypsies and rebels from across the globe. Refreshing........2007-07-10

As the Pogues once fused Irish folk with punk rock, so Gogol Bordello do the same with fiery Balkan gipsy music.
Although a formidable live presence, the New York band have been hit and miss on record.
Super Taranta! is a step forward. Roaring choruses are interspersed with manic violins, dub interludes and raucous polemics growled by luxuriantly moustachioed frontman Eugene Hutz.
"Gogol Bordello"'s red-blooded passion is refreshing, and they finally have another batch of boisterous singalongs to match it.
This 'gypsy punk' cacophony is all those times rolled into one.
Party on, dudes !

Dancing Taranta.......2007-07-10

Gogol Bordello hit the big time with their last album of raucous gypsy-punk, which coincided with frontman Eugene Hutz's screen debut.

And they stick to their past sound in "Super Taranta!" -- a mad, frenetic ride splattered with heavy doses of Balkan folk music. Their sound and vibe don't shift too much in this one, but their energy and wildness hasn't failed them, or their kooky blend of gypsy and Pogues-style rock'n'roll.

"If we are here not to do/what you and I wanna do?/And go for rubber, crazy with it/why the hell we are livin' here? DAH!" Eugene Hutz calls out a capella...

... just before the music lapses into a swaying, colourful Balkan melody... which goes into fast-forward about halfway through. Hutz is roaring and growning about how "there were never any good old days/they are today, they are tomorrow!/It's a stupid thing to say" as the music revs around him.

It gets even more energetic in the wild festival sound of "Wonderlust King," and the driving bass-rocker "Zina Marina." With those done, they spin off into a series of energetic Balkan rockers: accordion pop, jibbering fiddlerock, darkly gleeful punk, wailing guitar laments, and what sounds like the theme song to a gypsy James Bond movie.

It has to be admitted, Gogol Bordello hasn't really changed their sound much. Not that stops it from being fun frenetic, colourful, slightly messy and very insane, without a shred of self-consciousness. It's a Jackson Pollock of Balkan noise.

But "Super Taranta" does adjust their sound a bit -- there's a bit more gypsy in their music, and a few bits less punk, with tighter melodies than before. We get a tangle of raging, twining guitar and bass (and Eliot Ferguson's solid drums) driving the melodies along, but often they're swathed in dancey fiddle and blaring accordion. It's a pretty wild ride, all around.

And Hutz provides practically all the singing himself, in a voice that always sounds like he's about to pop a vocal cord. Raw, rough, untamed. He growls, wails, howls, and roars out his political, party-hearty lyrics: "My strange uncles from beyond/I'll meet 'em on the cosmos street/and we will drink to how we told/to never trust a plastic beat!"

"Super Taranta" is the sort of music that gets your heart racing and adrenaline shooting. A raucous, wild party album for an East European festival.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

Definitely A Must Have.......2007-04-30

My baby slept through the night shortly after I started looping track 5 (calming rain). We put a stereo in his room and turned the volume up and the cranked the bass. He loved it. He would only sleep for 3 hours at a time before I introduced this. Then the first night with the rain, he slept for 6 hours and then four hours. The second night he slept for 9 hours straight (9P-6A)! He hasn't repeated the 9 hours yet, but has at least been good for a 6 hour stint at night, which means we are only getting up once.

TIP: Turn up the volume. It does nothing if you don't blast it. If they are really fussy start with track 2 and then move on to tracks 3 or 5.

My baby sleeps through the night!.......2007-04-01

We had trouble getting our two month old to sleep soundly with all the creaks in the floorboards and older kids running around untill we picked up this cd. It was too cold to put a fan in her room and another cd (waves) wasn't doing the trick and we really need that constant noise for our light sleeper. The heartbeat on the cd, set to repeat so it plays all the time, is a lifesaver! I haven't really tried the other noises, since she wasn't a colicky baby, but since knowing a few in my life, I'm sure the vaccuum noise will work like a charm.

Although I never read the book or watched the dvd...
This was a great buy, and we are still using the cd at 5 1/2 months to keep her sleeping soundly at night.

amazing results.......2007-03-22

i had a very colicky baby from 2 weeks old to 10 weeks old and this was the best cd of all the ones i tried (classical, lullabye, ocean sounds, television, etc) to calm my baby and most importantly, to keep him sleeping longer. the last track was his favorite, the sound of the rain. he sleeps so much longer now that i play that track on "repeat" all night long. and i can get things done during his naps because the rain sound covers up the noise of me in the kitchen, etc. And, when he is really cranky and there's nothing else i can do for him, i can put him down in his bed and play the whole cd from start to finish and it calms him and puts him to sleep 75% of the time, which is a huge improvement from other attempts.

Slept through the night from day 1.......2007-03-09

We have used this in our bedroom, where we let the baby sleep, since we got home from the hospital. Every night, we simply turn on the CD (at number 5- rain) and hit repeat on the player. It repeats the rain sound all night long. As soon as we put our baby in the room, he is out like a light and sleeps through the night (since day one and now he is 10 weeks old). We only use the rain, since my husband can't stand to hear the other sounds that much, but now it is even hard for either of us to sleep without the CD :0)

Works like magic!.......2007-02-16

My 3-month-old daughter is a very fussy sleeper, and has been since a few days after birth. Using the 5 S's would calm her down, but she wouldn't fall asleep. As soon as we stopped, the crying would start again. Now, bedtime is much less of a fight. I swaddle my fussy baby, turn on the CD, and often within seconds she stops crying. She falls asleep with much less hassle. The various tracks on the CD can be used alone, in combination, or on repeat. My only complaint is that track 4, the hair dryer recording, begins and ends very abruptly. It has at times woken my daughter when it reaches the end of the track. But, when she is swaddled and crying in her crib, I turn on this recording, and she calms down within SECONDS...and soon afterwards, she falls asleep. This CD has definitely been a great purchase for our family.

this is a sixties album and you need a interest in the blues to enjoy this album.

This was just one of those LPs.......2007-05-07

that came out of nowhere, and with nearly everyone playing it, deservedly became a stone/d classic. Other than that it was an alleged jam recorded during spare studio time, with as after thought horns dubbed on, then released, it has stood the test of time as one of the best "blues" recordings of the year 1968. Put it up there with Blood, Sweat & Tears' "Child is Father to Man" for that year; few other blues releases for that year, if any, are up there with it.

I don't know why it works, but it does.......2007-05-01

I can't give this album a full 5 stars, but it's close, and certainly a classic of its type. Not many artists could pull off a rather loose "jam" session and have it hold up as well as this has. It just shows how much class and talent Al Kooper has. Tough enough, but how about when Mike Bloomfield fails to show on the 2nd day of the sessions, and Al has to recruit Steve Stills at literally the last minute. All things considered, it's amazing that this album even saw the light of day, much less that it is considered a sort of classic of its type.

But let's explore that. Among jazz musicians, jam sessions are quite normal, but it's usually a bit different for rock musicians. In this case, Al was as much of a jazz afficiando as he was blues, soul and rock, so he probably relished the idea to get Bloomfield and a good rhythm section, a couple of tunes he and Mike wanted to cover, and see what would happen. They did exactly that (at least for one day) and the results are pretty impressive. There are a few miscues: The phasing on "You Don't Love Me" is very dated and gets annoying quickly.

But still, if you can overlook the quirks and the obvious holes that are inevitably going to be there, there is a great spirit to this set. Sometimes living dangerously brings out what playing it safe could never get you, and I think that's what happens here. The adventure outweighs the lack of preparation, and the results are a truly unique listening experience.

Held up over time........2007-02-17

The amazing thing about this album is that it have held up over the last 38 years. This originally was planned as Bloomfield/Kooper album. However when Bloomfield was unable to show up and finish it due to drug issues, they went out and had Steven Stills fill in. It is for all intent and purpose a great blue album by three white guys that was largely unknown at the time. This was recorded three years before Stills made a name for himself at Woodstock. No I have not forgotten the Buffalo Springfield. It was also shortly after Kooper left the Blood Sweet and Tears. Bloomfield was fresh out of the shadows of Paul Butterfield and Elvin Bishops.

The album started off fast and hard with Albet Shuffle and keep up the pace for 8 more tracks, including a remix of Donavon "Season of the Witch".

There are four "Bonus"tracks that neither added or subtracted anything to the overall experience.

This album is a gem.

This is my favorite Disney Album ever.......2007-06-07

Maybe I've just got a penchant for the silly, but with songs on this album like, "What's Your name," and "I'm my own granpa", you can't help but be roped in by the zany fun. I owned this on a tape back in 1993 (?) and was sad when I couldn't find it on CD later. When Ilocated this one, I snapped it up right away!

I will admit that while driving on the freeway one night, white knuckling it and fearing for my life, I almost ripped the CD out of the player with my teeth during the final song. It was chaotic and noisy.

Overall, and barring numpty drivers, If you're in a position to listen to fun music with your kids, you won't be disappointed!

I had the casette tape of silly songs when I was a kid. Ever since my son was born, I have looked for it every time we went out. Finally broke down and bought it here. I can't wait til it arrives.

I bought this CD when my twin boys were born. Fourteen years later I find myself singing these songs to my two year old daughter. The songs are fun and SILLY - and most of all they are timeless! You can't go wrong with this disc.

This original cast album is delightful! I felt the passion from beginning to end!

soulful re-working of "The Wizard of Oz".......2007-04-18

THE WIZ is an endlessly-delightful soul/R&B musical reworking of "The Wizard of Oz", with both music and lyrics written by Charlie Smalls. Never has it been more perfectly performed than on the original 1975 Broadway cast album.

Stephanie Mills adds lots of lush, glossy vocals to her role of Dorothy; especially in the moving finale "Home" (which became Mills' theme song during the ensuing years). Mills also scores with "Soon As I Get Home", and "Be a Lion".

Playing Dorothy's misfit band of friends down the Yellow Brick Road are the superbly talented Hinton Battle as the Scarecrow, Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion, and Tiger Haynes as the Tin Man.

Dee Dee Bridgewater plays the good witch Glinda, and her "If You Believe" is truly inspirational. Mabel King plays Evillene, the wicked witch, and she brings a soulful and sassy edge to her big number "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News". Andre de Shields plays The Wiz himself.

This crisp recording is a great reminder of this truly classic Broadway production, which won seven Tony Awards (including Best Musical), and went on to run for over 700 performances.

You'll find yourself hitting the 'repeat' button for Stephanie Mills' "Home", and it will definitely stay on high-rotation in your CD player! A must for all Broadway fans.

Much like "Dreamgirls" after it, this album's concept was to play as a pop record to appeal to a broader audience, which is why there is a prologue instead of the show's full overture and some tracks fade out rather than end on a musical button. That aside, you have the great Stephanie Mills who originated the role of Dorothy, along with the sassy Andre de Shields in the title role and the awesome Mabel King as Evillene, the Wicked Witch, who later reprised her role in the 1978 film. As another reviewer mentioned earlier, missing are a few of the show's other gems: instrumentals, "Lion's Dream", "Emerald City Ballet", "Funky Monkeys", and vocal selections, "Who Do You Think You Are?", The Wiz's rendition of "If You Believe", and Glinda's beautiful anthem, "A Rested Body is a Rested Mind." Otherwise, a cast album worthy of any Broadway theater collection.

Arriving in the spring of 1975, "The Wiz" ( a "soulful" take on "The Wizard Of Oz") was not an immediate hit. After an strong marketing campaign and a Tony for Best Musical, "The Wiz" enjoyed a long stay on Broadway.

Stephanie Mills (who lated scored a pop hit w/ "Never Knew Love Like This Before") shines as Dorothy. Hinton Battle and Ted Ross are also terrific as the Scarecrow and Lion, respectively.

A satriani album for non satriani fans........2007-05-24

Joe Satriani returns from his hard blue/rock outing "Is There love in Space?" to bring us his latest brilliant creation "Super Colossal". This is probably the first Satch album that both fans and newcomers can listen to side by side. Gone are the minute-long legato sequences (at least on the album versions) and in comes more layerings and rhythm. The licks and tricks are still apparent though, and there is a very impressive legato sequence on "Theme for a strange world". Don't get me wrong, the solos are still there, however Satch has decided to slow things down a bit for this album. Cue some very thoughtful pieces such as "Made of tears", "A cool new way", "The meaning of love" and "One Robots' dream."

A must have album for fans and newcomers alike, however the die-hard fan wanting to hear these songs played at their absolute best should get the Satriani Live! CD or dvd, which compliments this CD perfectly.

Bring on Joes' next album!

Soulful leads, he's getting better with age.......2007-04-15

Ripping leads, and yet memorable melody licks. Joe pops up often at guitar clinics, and I always make sure to catch him when I can. His technique is flawless, and he simply gets better tone and riffs as he progresses through his career.

On this CD, as opposed to the atypical faster 4X4 rock blues backtracks, Joe is far more laid back and loosely tight, if you will. More like mood music. I prefer this as a change of pace, because it makes you concentrate more on the leads. In fact, it's not till track 7 (One robot's Dream) that he picks up the pace a bit. He is picking his leads more this CD, as opposed the standard pulloffs, which gives it more of a dynamic feel. I imagine he's bored, and is looking to step back from the processed speed machine guitar sound of the past. Nice.

I LOVE this CD!.......2007-04-10

I'm really tired of the reviewers who insist that Satriani needs to do something "fresh" or "innovative." This CD is full of great tunes, played with style, soul and substance. Sure, Satriani could appeal to the tiny minority of guitar geeks that need to hear odd time signatures and atonal solos, but he prefers to make music that a lot of people can enjoy. This CD really makes me feel good-what could be better than that? In the world of virtuoso players, he's got the guts to sometimes keep it simple and let the song speak for itself. He doesn't ask himself if the song is complicated enough to appease the guitar geeks. For example, his ballad "Ten Words" is just plain beautiful-one that keeps floating around my head-and yet very few guitar virtuosos would ever record a song like it. Why? They try to make music that other guitar players will approve of, instead of just making great music. Joe Satriani makes great music, and my world is a better place because I get to listen.

Somewhere between Average and Mediocre.......2007-04-05

Seriously people, this record really isn't that great. The songs are rehashed from his previous material, there's nothing new about his playing or style, his songwriting seems to have deteriorated and his tone has become more 'Guitar Center-ish' than anything.

Ironically, the only saving grace of this record (besides a couple of neat moments) is Satch himself. His general guitar playing evokes memories (for the long time listener) of the dizzying heights of "Surfing..." or "Flying..." and for that reason alone, this album stands up.

I really gave this record serious listening and can only conclude that besides flashes of Satch's overall brilliance (which you'd get on ANYTHING he'd put out), the songs on this album weren't well thought out. In fact, they sounded like they were rushed. Songs like "Crowd Chant" and "Moving On" are obvious 'filler' tunes, helping this effort cross the line from E.P to Album.

Sorry Satch, I love your style and the inspiration you provided me, but this record isn't one of the defining landmarks of your musical legacy.

If you have never heard Joe Satriani and like Guitar Rock, buy it. Also buy another Satriani CD because you WILL have them all before it is over.

You'll dig this "More Today Than Yesterday".......2007-07-03

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Super Hits of the '70s: Have a Nice Day, Vol. 1- The initial release of the series made a solid splash for its consistency and musical diversity.

The volumes become a portable jukebox with any selection a memory of yesteryear. The opening track "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase could be a Stevie Wonder composition. The production is tremendous and the vocals resonate from the speakers.

"Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" from Steam became not only a hit single but a sports anthem. Played at hundreds of venues after the home team would have a victory in hand the tune is going to soon celebrate its fortieth birthday but not look older than one.

"Venus" - (The Shocking Blue) The opening second keyboard sound is hypnotic. It had hit written all over.

"Come Saturday Morning" By the Sandpipers has one of the best vocal performances ever. A timeless tune that could never outstay its welcome.

The only pitfall with the entire series is the playing time should fill up a CD. That is why bonus track were invented. Excluding the clock, this a wonderful ride to the past.

Fun, Fun, Fun (no T-Bird required).......2006-04-05

Today's rock historians will tell you that the late 60s and early 70s were a time of big changes in the music world, and to a degree, they're right: The Who the Pretty things were inventing the rock-opera, James Brown was turning the R&B world on its head, the Velvet Underground were birthing the alternative rock scene, the Grateful Dead were expanding the length and very definition of rock at their life-altering concerts, etc., etc. Yes, rock was, for better or worse, growing up and movin' on out. Fortunatly, nobody thought to tell the chartmaking, AM radio crowd. And so, at the beginning of the 70s, record labels were still churning out platter after platter of simplistic, catchy, glorious, and downright fun pop brilliance. The first in a series of 25 (!) discs, Have a Nice Day, V.1 cobbles together twelve pop delights from 1969 and 1970, and each one is a winner: The disc's oppener, "More Today than Yesterday," is a glorious, soulful, propulsive single from the summer of 1969. "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye," (whose chorus is probably in the Constitution somewhere) is much more than a tune to play off the losers of cuise ship dance contests: With its chiming bells, lulling handclaps, ethereal vocals, and majestic organ playing, it's an otherworldly pop confection. "Smile A Little Smile For Me" is pure hand-clapping, singalong accoustic pop-rock catchiness. And then there's "Cherry Hill Park," a hook-soaked, slinking pop tune with lyrics as risque as anything the early 'Stones ever wrote. And whatever you do, don't overlook the wah-wahing blue-eyed soul of "Arizona" with its sublime, laid back vocals and magestic chorus. "Come Saturday Morning," with its gorgeous vocals and dreamy atmosphere, sounds like a lost Byrds single. And as for the less poppy entries on this disc, there are plenty of great rockers aboard: The rediculously catchy bounce of "Venus," the eye-wateringly heavy "Mississippi Queen," and the country-blues-rocker "The Rapper" are sweet highlights. All in all, a great disc. If you thought that the good stuff never hit the charts, pick this up and prepare to be re-educated.

Have A Nice Day; Volume One IS # One But It's A Tie With Volume Two .......2005-09-13

In my opinion: Twenty Three out of the Twenty Five versions of this, Super Hits Of The 70s; Have A Nice Day, series have their ups and downs and some are better than others and there are several one and two hit wonders on them but the bottom line is this.... Volume One IS Number One and Volume Two is right along beside it. In otherwords; if both volumes were playing against each other in a ballgame the game would most definitely end in a tie. From start to finish those two are solid and the quality of the music is nothing less than fabulous.
This Vol. One starts out with Spiral Staircase's, More Today Than Yesterday, and it most definitely will have you singing along with it.
The second song is, Baby It's You, from the excellent band Smith. Gayle McCormick's bluesy vocals sound fantastic on this tune, which was also a good song for The Beatles on their American LP called The Early Beatles from 1965 plus it was a huge hit for The Shirelles.
The third song is a very beautiful tune which made it to the top five in November 1969 and will melt your heart being, Smile A Little Smile For Me, by The Flying Machine. Folks;I think I remember a slightly different version of this song by The Flying Machine then what is on this disc. Correct me if I am wrong.
The fourth song is by the great Billy Joe Royal called, Cherry Hill Park. Billy Joe Royal a one or two hit wonder?.....No Way! .The fifth song is Steams immortal, Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. This gem is an Anthem and reached # one in December 1969 and most all of us have sung it at one time or another. Especially at a ballgame. Bannarama had a hit with this song in the 80s.
The sixth song is, Venus, by The Shocking Blue which was a huge smash for this band. Bananarama also had a smash hit in 1986 with this one.
The seventh song is Vanity Fare's charming, Early In The Morning. Vanity Fare also has a timeless classic on Vol.Two.
The eighth song is by Mark Lindsay being, Arizona. That song was Mark's first solo hit. As several of you already know; Mark also sang lead vocals for Paul Revere And The Raiders.
The ninth song went all the way to # Two in March 1970 being, The Rapper, by The Jaggerz. A fantastic song by a great band from Pittsburgh.
The tenth song is a beautiful romantic ballad that was nominated for an Oscar called, Come Saturday Morning, by The Sandpipers. It was also featured on the Motion Picture The Sterile Cuckoo with Liza Minilli.
The eleventh song is a very nice bubblegummy like tune by The Cuff Links called, Tracy. This Gem was sung by Ron Dante who also sang lead for The Archies.
And last but definitely not least this disc also has the rockin, Mississippi Queen, by Mountain.
These songs hit their peak between June 1969 and July 1970 and this is definitely a five star disc. As an aging Babyboomer I can say that I still love the music and these twelve songs are twelve more reasons why I still do.
Do I have a favorite tune on this Volume One compilation?.....Yes.....All twelve of them! If you like music from this era this Volume is a must.

Before the advent of online services like imusic.com, Rhino Records was THE label for re-releasing old material. As a lifelong music junkie (I own every Top 10 song from 1963 to 1975), I bought at least twenty of their Have A Nice Day series. Not every song is a winner, but many of these songs were not--at least at the time--heavily anthologized.

Were all of these big hits? No. But it's nice to hear Vanity Fares first hit, "Early in the Morning" (No. 12), than the overplayed "Hitchin' a Ride." "Mississippi Queen" only made it to No. 21, but the song rocks! "Come Saturday Morning" (from the movie The Sterile Cuckoo w/ Liza Minnelli) didn't fare much better at No. 17, but again it's a song you get on few other collections.

The big hits were No. 1's like "Venus," "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," and the million-sellers like "The Rapper" and "Arizona." One of the most enduring songs of the bunch is the one-hit-wonder "More Today Than Yesterday" by the Spiral Starecase. [Check the spelling on that one...amazon.com has it right! It is NOT staircase!]

What would motivate anyone to buy this? Simple...nostalgia. I was a teenager when these songs hit the charts, and they all have a sentimental value to this day. My only gripe is that the playing time on these is pretty short with only twelve songs filling up less than half the disc space. [It was even worse on the cassette version when you got only 10 songs.]

I bought this because of one song. I'm happy to find it after 30

A near-perfect compilation! Because if you turned on your radio during January-March,1972, you would have heard EVERY one of these tunes being played! Everyone must be reminded that with this series of CDs, RHINO must obtain licenses from the copyrighted labels in order to re-release them, and not all labels, or Artists, are willing to participate. (Sorry, no Badfinger, T. Rex, Three Dog Night, Neil Young, Harry Nilsson, Carole King, Carpenters, etc.) So how can you be too critical of these recordings? For those of us that were around in those days, AM radio played the TOP 100, not just the "top 10", "top 30", etc. That is why those somewhat forgotten tunes pop up on this series. But I remember every one of them, because everyone of them was being played on the radio. That includes "Son Of My Father", which caught our attention because it was one of the first pop records which arrangement was totally dominated by the MOOG synthesizer

Another great installment of the Have a Nice Day series.......2006-07-28

Bridging the years 1971 and 1972, Vol. 7 of Rhino's Have a Nice Day series once again compiles a number of obscure and unheard hits of the 70s. A few misses here, but the hits are better.

The hot: Lee Michaels' "Do You Know What I Mean" almost becomes irritating because of that terrible organ in the background, but his goofy lyrics kept me listening. Before KOTTER, Sweathog was a band that created a cool rock hit with "Hallelujah". This one doesn't get much radio play these days, but it's a pretty cool rocker. It's pure 1971, and that's why Coven's "One Tin Soldier" is so gosh darn good. There's a reason it kept shooting back up the charts every year! That reason was probably BILLY JACK and its constant re-releases by Tom Laughlin, but it's still a great peace anthem. Jonathan Edwards' "Sunshine" was recently in ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF BURGUNDY, and is a great folk rock tune in the tradition of Richie Havens. Bullet's "White Lies, Blue Eyes" is simply awesome!! It sounds like something that Journey or Styx would have done in the late 70s, early 80s, but as it hit in 1972, it's that much cooler. Redbone's "Witch Queen of New Orleans" isn't as good as their later "Come and Get Your Love", but it's got some great creepy vocals. Pre-dating the disco craze, Apollo 100's "Joy" epitomizes the 70s. When else could you create a dance hit with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy"? Walter Murphy would attempt the same, with more succesful results, with "A Fifth of Beethoven" in 1975, but in '72, "Joy" was the ultimate. "Softly Whispering I Love You" is a real trip! Opening with a boys choir and erupting into a Richard Harris sound-a-like singing wretchedly pining lyrics, one has to wonder if the producers of this record were intending a tongue-in-cheek spoof of this brand of music. Add electric guitar and a rock beat to this, and you've got an incredible relic no one would dare play on oldies stations today. Giorgio's "Son of My Father" has progressive-sounding keyboards (Giorgio, aka Giorgio Moroder, would perfect this sound by the disco era), and not much else, but is a fun listen. Sounds nothing like 1972, except maybe for the phasing.

The not so hot: Poor Melanie. "Brand New Key" is kinda cute, but despite hitting #1, it was more harmful to her career than anything else. Listen to her album LAY DOWN, with an incredible mix of songs and consistenly strong vocals, and then listen to this bubblegum sexual innuendo monstrosity. There is no real comparison. It's cute but not essential. Today's Soft Rock stations play Beverly Bremmer's "Don't Say You Don't Remember" a lot these days, but it's practically the dictionary definition of lame. It sounds more like Donny Osmond like its main inspiration, The Carpenters, and that's a whole different level of cheesiness. Why all the love for Climax's "Precious and Few"? An over-produced piece of fluff sounding like The Partridge Family meets The Brooklyn Bridge, but with none of the kitsch value. It was probably a great make-out hit then, but it doesn't hold up today.

In summary, a very good selection of early 70s hits well worth picking up!

Some Weak Spots, But Some Gems, Too.......2004-02-27

You have to keep reminding yourself that the function of Rhino's Have a Nice Day series is not to present the biggest hits of the decade. If it were, you'd have to include songs like "Maggie May," "American Pie" and "Family Affair," all No. 1 hits in 1971-72 (the period covered by vol. 7). Instead, what Rhino offers is some of the more obscure songs along with a few recognizable hits to give the listener a more accurate picture of the decade.

Admittedly, they sometimes go to the extreme. For example, "Son of My Father" didn't even dent the Top 40. [Who the heck is Giorgio?!!] But it's nice to have Lee Michael's classic "Do You Know What I Mean." And what teenage boy didn't have a crush on Melanie? Her childlike vocals on the million-seller "Brand New Key" still gives me a rush. [Note: This is the only No. 1 song on vol. 7.] In addition it's nice to hear Redbone's earlier hit "Witch Queen of New Orleans." [See? They weren't a one-hit wonder!] Although more than half of these artists hit the Top 40 only once: Sweathog's "Hallelujah" and Coven's "One Tin Soldier" among them. But like I said, all this does is give the listener a broader perspective of the musical tastes (good and bad) of the Seventies. If you were a teenager during this period, many of this songs will bring back fond memories. Enjoy in moderation.

Pick your gems from the mud.......2002-04-05

The songs by English Congregation and Bullet alone make this album worth having. As to the rest, there are a few nice tunes indeed, but I really don't quite see the point in filling up the remaining space on this CD with boring pieces by some obscure names such as J Edwards or Climax. The seventies were full of way more interesting music than that.
