Since 1987 this power trio has churned out Black Sabbath-influenced grind-sludge metal for a fanatical underground following. Part of the early '90s "Seattle scene," the Melvins never achieved the radio airplay of their contemporaries, though founding members Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne (the eccentric, Afro-ed singer-guitarist) and Dale Crover (drummer-vocalist) are beloved and prolific fixtures on the indie rock scene. Their latest seven-song outing on fellow quirky musician (and Osborne's Fantomas bandmate) Mike Patton's Ipecac label will likely not boost them out of relative obscurity, but it's an entertaining aural journey nonetheless. From the heady 'n' heavy intensity of "Black Stooges," which ends with several minutes of drums and feedback, to the winning speedy, countrified punk power of "Dr. Geek" and the garage metal of "Little Judas Chongo," Hostile Ambient Takeover is, as the title suggests, at once more punky and more ambient than previous swampy efforts. There are some lengthy, ponderous, slo-mo entries, which is not unexpected of the Melvins, while the nearly 16-minute album closer is a wash of mostly instrumental noise that ranges from ominous to space age (vocals kick in 10 minutes into the song). Oddball but engaging, the Melvins have carved out a unique niche, which they dig deeply into on Hostile Ambient Takeover, their 18th album of aural idiosyncrasy. --Katherine Turman

THIS CD IS DEFINETLY MY FAVORITE MELVINS CD. THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT IT I DON'T LIKE.

    1. BLACK STOOGES - JUST A DRUM INTRO. BORING, DALE CROVER CAN DRUM BETTER THAN THAT.
    2. UNTITLED - REALLY GOOD OPENING SONG
    3. DR. GEEK - A KIND OF PUNKY SONG, REMINDS ME OF SOME OF THEIR REALLY EARLY STUFF.
    4. LITTLE JUDAS CHONGO - THIS SONG IS SO SICK!!!!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE MELVINS SONGS.
    5. THE FOOL, THE MEDDLING IDIOT - THIS SONG IS GREAT. IT IS ALSO THE ONLY SONG I'VE EVER HEARD THAT HAS A KEYBOARD IN IT THAT I LIKE.
    6. THE BRAIN CENTER AT WHIPPLES - GNARLY SONG.
    7. FOAMING - ANOTHER GREAT SONG, A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM SOME THE OTHER SONGS ON HERE.
    8. THE ANTI-VERMIN SEED - THIS SONG IS DEFINETLY HOSTILE AND AMBIENT.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL Ecclectic Electric.......2004-04-11

I just came into possession of this little gem about a week ago....and I am still recovering. Many people look at this album as a relativley straight-ahead rock album...at least by the Melvins standards .I think most say that out of comparison to their then more recent releases such as "Electroretard" and the its over my head "Colossus of Destiny".And yes compared to them this is indeed a coventional rocker of an album. However it is only conventional when applied as a term to the Melvins universe. While these songs rock harder and groove better than 99% of anything you will hear on the radio this year, they still retain their experimental edge all through the album. Some standout cuts include "Dr Geek"...which for some reason reminds me of Primus...at least in terms of the song structure. It has a loose rockabilly sound matched with a punk fury ,and it is pulled off briliantly."Little Judas Chongo" is absolutely phenomenal.Maybe i make too much out of this song really. Its not the catchiest thing they ever done, but being a guitarist myself, this song just reaches out and grabs my jugular."The Brain Center at Whipples" and the epic like "The Fool, the Melding Idiot" are also both outstanding tracks."Black Stooges" and "Foaming" are good, but I just cant get into "The Anti-Vermin Seed".I like a lot of their experimental ,ambient peices..but that one doesent do anything for me.All in all a very strong release and if you already have a fondness for the Melvins this is a must have album....Hope i helped.

    4 out of 5 stars Thanks....I Needed That!.......2003-02-14

I gotta laff - 'cause The Melvins are the pioneers of a sound that so many other so-called Alternative, Hard Rock, Metal, Punk, bla bla bla bands try so hard to emulate, but simply lack the testicular fortitude and vision to pull it off (or even admit to, for that matter). This is a band with three PLAYERS - guys who really turn it up a notch when it comes to kicking out the jams. They are not afraid to take chances, they are funny, they always keep the listener guessing (expect the unexpected), they don't give a rat's rump about the fast-food crud that is the popular x-generation "alternative" rock music of today (barf!) - Melvins march to the beat of their own drummer - and man o man, Dale C. is one the best you will ever hear...King Buzzo is a 5-string guitar/noise icon with a penchant for covering vintage Alice Cooper Group tunes (i am not worthy)...and Kevin R. holds it together with slide bass (!) - proving to be the most consistent foundation in the "revolving door" of bassists the band has had through the years. Buy this record if you want to purge your soul of all the commonplace sludge being passed around and lauded by the industry onanists as the next big hard rock/punk thing. If u like your rock & roll loud, masterful, freaky & adventurous, and prefer "art" to "pop", this record is for you. Note: you HAVE NOT lived until you've seen these guys live - dunk your head in a vat of molasses & place inside an idling jet engine...voila! (of course, don't try this at home or abroad...teehee)

5 out of 5 stars Nothing too new, but a great album nonetheless.......2003-02-11

Considering that they've existed since 1982, have included more than 5 bass players, and have put out albums for 5 different labels, it's amazing that the Melvins are even still alive to greet the year 2003. One of the most persistent bands in the history of American rock and the near sole survivors of the Seattle Grunge scene, The Melvins are not only still alive, but have managed to release an astonishing 23 albums (and EPs) in their wake while simultaneously maintaining several successful side projects. This being said, HAT (Hostile Ambient Takeover) is a monumental release for the Melvins, being the first new studio album after a two-year maelstrom of archival live and compilation releases. The group's last original outing, the 2000 Trilogy, provided one album for each aspect of the Melvins sound, but where the Trilogy split up the Melvins different personalities, HAT unites them all on a single CD, making one supremely diverse monster of an album. Covering everything from their punk roots, Dr. Geek, to bold new ambient experiments, The Anti-Vermin Seed, HAT acts as an effective summation of the Melvins career thus far. While most bands would regard this as a virtual lack of progress, the Melvins have made such numerous strives in such radically different directions on every previous release that HAT proves to be a necessary and much appreciated compliment to the band's eclectic past. Furthermore, regardless of whether it's pushing the envelope or simply reveling in the classic quirky dirginess that is uniquely "Melvins," HAT displays such impressive songwriting and intense instrumental dynamics throughout that it is an unquestionably enjoyable listen, regardless of motive. A perfect place for a new fan to start and a wonderful reward for longtime diehards, The Melvins have made a brilliant mixture of all their best traits while still leaving plenty of room for growth.

If you are a fan of the Melvins, hate the melvins, never heard the melvins then you should buy this one. little judas chongo still gives me chills. it sounds like a demented minutemen song. this album is the best melvins thus far. I was scared to buy it since the word ambient was involved in the title and had just recovered from the pile of crap collosus of destiny, but I am glad that I did!

3 out of 5 stars Was not really a takeover.......2005-04-08

This CD was ok for me. Some of the tracks on the CD I thought sounded horrible. It was only 5 tracks that I enjoyed. The last track "My Help" I really liked; it had the tradional church sound to it. Overall if people are into gospel rap this CD is for you. I am not really into rap so I really did not enjoy this CD. O2 much better.

    4 out of 5 stars Pre-O2 production from Tonex.....Not bad..not bad at all...........2004-11-05

3.5 Stars>>>>>>>>>Before the ground-breaking O2, and before the Thriller-like thrill ride aptly titled Out The Box, Tonex put out this compilation which featured delegates from the Nureau camp. These include Shelley Gaines, Gibraan, Lanee Battle, Rhema K, Jah Word, Reality, Kimme, Ms. Tonex (tonex's wife), Brotha Los, and 5.0. Tonex's parents, A.C. & E.B Williams are also featured on this album. At press time, some of these said artists no longer work with Tonex anymore for complicated reasons. A falling out maybe? Who knows. Anyway this album was a step up in terms of production for a gospel rap album. Most gospel rap on the radio that I've heard mostly have that mid 90's underground hip-hop sound, but this album doesn't disappoint, at least not entirely.

As I said in my review title, this album is pre-O2 production, O2 being Tonex's second mainstream album. If you really follow Nureau and Tonex like I do, you will see that his production before O2 is only half as good as his production after that album. This man went thru a metamorphosis it seems after that LP. However, though the Tonex then can't light a candle to the Tonex now, this album is still above average. There are some songs that just seem to be missing something ("Figure", "Until I'm Done Singin'", "Next To U" and "Dizzy"), some that impress a little bit ("John The Baptist", "Firewater", "High Place", "Automatic", and "Triumph") and then some that really hit the spot. These include "In A Minute" (hot track, 'nuff said), "Front 2 Back" (a track to be played while ridin' in a drop-top no doubt!!), "My Help"(the only "traditional" sounding song on the album), and "Babyface" (Tonex's wife headlines this offering). Above average LP from the Nureau camp, before Tonex was the cream of the crop in gospel music. When you listen to this, it'll show you how his producing/vocal arranging skills have grown and how he has become a more complete artist/producer with time. Get this album, and any other album with the word "NUREAU" attached to it. You will never be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Takeover is Da Bomb!!!!!.......2004-04-29

Okay, I know that the CD is old and Tonex's coming out with another one in a couple of weeks or so. But I really love this CD!!! My faves are 'John the Baptist,' 'Dizzy,' and 'High Place.' Who am I foolin'? The whole CD is a classic! I think that Tonex's innovative beats is what makes his music stand out and grab ya! It definitely gets your attention, and isn't this what this is all about? Getting the young people's and sinner man's attention???? Now for someone who is more of the 'Mighty Clouds of Joy,' or a 'Shirley Caesar' fan (of which I am!) if that is all you like to listen to, then you won't be able to get wit' this. My kids absolutely LOVE this album! They are being reached where they are...preteen and teens alike! I can handle it all as long as it is lifting up the name of Jesus!!

Also...make it a point to go see da man in concert...it is a church service!! I shouted like I was in a revival at a Tonex concert in Albany, NY a few years back! My kids remember that to this day!

Much love and blessings to ya!

5 out of 5 stars WELL WORTH THE LISTEN.......2002-06-22

I just purchased this CD last week. It is GREAT!!!!The first time I listened I thought okaaaaaay, but by day two it was rotating HEAVILY in my car Cd player, computer, system and anywhere else that I could play my CD. I have some favorites on the project. "Triumph" is by far my favorite, "My Help" is a close second, and everything else is great too. There are a lot of talented vocalists on the Cd and if you are a true music listener you will appreciate the messages behind the music

    4 out of 5 stars Definitely for Hip-Hop fans.......2002-02-05

I just bought this CD last weekend, and it is definitely different. But then again, being different is something he's always set out to do. I must commend him for originality, because there are so many Christian musicians that sound alike. Let's be honest, that has been a mainstay in Christian music, that it has to sound a certain way, and if someone attempt to bring a different sound to gospel, they'll experience opposition by some right off the bat. Remember Rance Allen? And the song, "Oh Happy Day"? They are classics now, but when they first came out, they were written off as too wild. On the other hand, artists who make old AND new Christian music tend produce tracks that all sound the same.

Having your own sound and sticking to it is one thing (like Fred Hammond), but when your stuff sounds like everyone else's, it gets stale. Tonex has attempted to against both grains and develop his own style of music, which he calls "Nureau," which actually has similarities to George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Like their styles, Nureau is interesting enough, and it contains production techniques few people even know how to use, much less want to. Songs like "Figure" are a perfect example, a songs that Prince would've probably done if he accepted Christ, accept with more live instruments. I always commend Christian artists who are original, because it's easy, and at times preferred, to sound like someone else, traditional or contemporary. One thing about that Tonex strayed from on this album to his detriment, is his jazz-styled production. The songs in the "Jazz" section of his last album were arguably the best ones on the album. Granted, he did do better on the Hip-Hop side, with "Firewater" and "In A Minute" being two of the best songs on the album. But he could've had more slow jams of the same scale as "Babyface"(which, oddly enough, is a song based on the Nativity story)and "Next to You." That would have been a great mix of styles, just like his last album. Then again, as I stated before, repeating the same styles and patterns is a carnal sin to Tonex; he refuses to stick with the same old, same old. I believe his goal this time around was to "make you move front to back, [and] make beats for Cadillacs," as the song song "Front 2 Back" points out.

This album was definitely made for the believers in Christ who appreciate Hip Hop-based Christian music. "Firewater" is definitely a head-nodder...once you figure out the rhythym, of course. That's one other thing that can keep a person from fully enjoying Tonex's music: his penchant for non-linear rhythyms. Trying to follow the flow his more complex songs can be frustrating and can result in skipping to the next track. One example is "John The Baptist." The song takes a while because the rythym is an 8-beat, but the instruments and vocals by Jah Word doesn't follow a straight 8-beat. In laymen's terms, the rhymes and synthesizers are off-beat in a big way. It's not a bad thing, but it can be seen as one to some people. The other example is "High Place," featuring Tonex's mother. The channel and chorus in that song still confuse me to this day. One day I'll get it, though. But other folk may give up trying.

I know Tonex's trying new things, but the whole purpose of music, Christian or secular, is and enjoyment. If a person cannot enjoy the music, it affects the message in the song, whether we Christians want to admit it or not. Christian music is unique in that the message of the song is the focal point rather than the music, or at least it should be. Still, a wise minister once told me the delivery is just as important as the message. Tonex's message in his songs are very clear in certain cases, like "In A Minute," but his delivery has always been a source of disturbance for some, be it music style or his actual appearance. This is for all, intents and purposes, a good upbeat CD that is best played with the bass turned up high. A good experiment which produced good results.

3 out of 5 stars Solid, If Unspectacular - Wait For The Domestic Issue.......2006-02-21

This one seems a little more forced than "12 Shots On The Rocks," not as well lubricated, missing some of the hip swivel and sway Michael Monroe and Andy McCoy normally exhibit, but don't blame new recruits Conny Bloom (guitars) and A.C. Christell (bass); their names aren't listed on the owner registration.

A credit for "beats and styles" in the liner notes to two guys with the same first name - "DJ" - throws up an immediate red flag that Hanoi Rocks may be ditching the girl they brought to the prom. Those beats show up on "Reggae Rocker," an embarrassing, stuttering, failed experiment/foray into hip hop with Monroe attempting to rock the mic and urging listeners to clap their like trained seals. "Talk To The Hand" is another clunker, a prime example of why it's never wise to base a song entirely around an irritating bit of hip hop street slang that sounded tired about the second time your little sister used it. Oh, and it sounds like post-addiction Aerosmith. God help us all...

Mercifully, though, these are just blips and the rest of the album finds the band re-discovering their stride, er, stagger. "Love" distills, in just 2:33, everything that once made this band special; barrelhouse piano, a blathering yet spirited Monroe vocal, and solid, chop-blocking guitar from McCoy. "Eternal Optimist," "You Make The Earth Move," and "Better High," all benefiting from a dash of good old-fashioned Hanoi Rocks drama, would fit comfortably slotted anywhere in the track listings of latter day albums in the band's canon like "Back To Mystery City" and "Two Steps From The Move."

Full marks all around to whoever decided to cover Phil Lynott's "Dear Miss Lonely Hearts." They nail it. Somewhere Phil is smiling. Hanoi Rocks still seems to defy categorization and there's still more to this band than meets the eyeliner; they eschew flashy guitar licks, macho posturing, and dissing the competition in favor of saxophones, a revved-up, almost poppy twin-guitar attack which treads a fine line between punk and lewd blues, and hook-driven songwriting. Thankfully, the 20-year piss break these guys took has done nothing to change their modus operandi much, prompting a sigh of relief from this scribe that was probably audible in Helsinki.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2005-02-10

I ordered this CD after downloading a song from the album on msn downloads. This band is so diversified with their music compilation. Each song rocks, and tells a different story. I felt quite a bit of emotion in the lyrics. Talented musicians with well written songs make this cd a great buy. These guys are headed in the right direction...Straight to the top! Rating AAAAA+++++

I was browsing this site when I seen Hostile Takeover's cd Four Letter Word advertised here. I was fortunate to see the band perform a few months ago, and I can't begin to adequately describe how talented these guys are. Their material is well written with tons of emotion, which is truly displayed once you hear them. I honestly don't believe I've heard anything quite like them since maybe the first GNR release. Its unfortunate the artwork is not displayed on this website, because even the cover is awesome! Pick up a copy and see and hear for yourself...It won't be long before these guys are a household name!

        5 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe These Guys Are Obscure???.......2004-10-11

I must admit, I had never heard of the Lords of Lyrics until I was searching for something else and stumbled upon this Album and decided to take a chance after listening to the snippets, All I can say is WOW and I'm glad that I did! I feel like I discovered a big secret or something But it almost feels like a travesty that these guys aren't on BET, MTV, etc...The Album quite simply is Dope! I' m talking from start to finish I was really impressed with the Lyrical Delivery, The song structure, beats and concepts. Plus these guys say some of the funniest punchlines out there today. Big Chief and Keith Karnage I don't know if you're reading this or even if you're still rapping, But whatever you do please do NOT stop! I've heard many Independent rappers in my time but you 2 cats by far are the dopest, most talented and diverse I've had the pleasure of listening to and I'm being totally honest. Can I start a type of hip-hop crusade to get these guys heard by the masses? I've had track 8 on repeat all day, "What I Gotta Do?" speaks to me on so many different levels right now, I needed to hear this song, Thanks guys and here's wishing that one day the world will get a chance to hear you as well!
