5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-06-02

'Wide-Eyed And Mystified' is an album with a great sound and even better lyrics.

I had only heard two songs prior to buying the album. I really liked both of them, but considered just getting those two on ITunes and skipping the rest. I'm very glad that I decided to get the album.

The two songs that I had heard before, 'The More' and 'A Better Way', are excellent, but so are several others on this CD. I could name a couple of other great songs here, but I would be doing the reader a disservice. All of these should be heard.

This is an album that has grown on me the more that I've listened to it. Several of the songs are very catchy and you might just find yourself replaying these in your head. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Downhere is up there with the best .......2007-04-13

Wide eyed and mystified was one of Christianity Today's top 10 albums of 2006, I heard some samples and decided to take a risk and buy the album. This album is excellent. The composers are also share tasks as the lead singers. You would swear Freddie Mercury was still alive after hearing Marc Martel's vocal performance on "More". Jason Germain's vocals have a deep rich quality both vocalist are excellent. Lyrically they are good and the issues they address are incredible. Not only Christians should get this album, but everyone. This album left me satifised and proud of this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired music - Incredible voices!.......2007-03-10

This music is soul-stirring. "A Better Way" is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Humble rockstars release their best yet.......2007-02-23

How is it that so few people have heard of these guys? I started listening to their first album a few years ago, and I could immediately tell that they're extraordinarily gifted musicians - I've been hooked ever since. "So Much for Substitutes" was probably more impressive musically than the first album, but it was a bit dark and thus an acquired taste. "Wide-Eyed and Mystified" is a truly brilliant addition to the previous two albums, with a wide variety of musical styles, and a continuing trend of lyrics with substance. Unlike most fluffy Christian rock I'm hearing these days, it's evident that the guys of Downhere understand the rich depths of theology and are producing more than just catchy riffs and sugar highs for the seeking masses. Listening to any of their albums and especially this one, I'm refreshed that I'm not the only one weary of the times we live in. "I Will Follow...", "The Real Jesus," and "I Miss You Here" resonate with me on that note. "A Better Way," "Little is Much," and "Unbelievable" keep reminding me of my identity in Christ, and I relate so well to the anointed passion that went into those songs. Beyond the depth and theology, this is definitely an album that I'd listen to just for musicianship. If you've never heard this group's vocal talent, you'll be amazed, even if you're not really a musician. I could go on and on about the eclectic variety of influences I hear, from Keith Green, a very distinct Queen tribute, and possibly even Kevin Max. (Where did that vibrato technique come from?) The reality is that no amount of words could do this album justice, and I think it's well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome album from a virtually unknown band!.......2006-12-26

I had the chance to see these Canadian guys twice, most recently with Barlow Girl and Matthew West. I had always thought that Martel's voice was hauntingly similar to Freddie Mercury's, but when Downhere opened their set with WE WILL ROCK YOU, I got cold chills. By all means buy this awesome album as well as see them live if you get the chance. They are well worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great CD.......2005-08-30

I have owned this CD for a while now and still listen to it daily! I know them personally and am not only impressed by there music but by their faith and by the ability to not let "fame" get to their heads..

Not fake but real guys! That also makes them a great band.

THEY ARE ROCKERS, IF YOU DON'T LIKE ROCK I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YA....

3 out of 5 stars A little disapointed.......2005-06-27

I loved Downhere's frist CD, so I purchased this one. I was slightly disapointed. The songs are much more repetative and quite a bit rockier. I liked the old stuff better. However, the quality is still good and I haven't decided not to listen to it yet, so It's not that bad.

5 out of 5 stars I just heard them live.......2005-03-19

These guys just played at my church and I have to say, Wow. What a fun buch of gentlemen who really play well and have a good time. I am on our tech team so I interacted with them for several hours setting up and tearing down afterwards and they are special. They stayed almost 3 hours after the show to sign autographs for the fans (Avalon the night earlier only lasted 90min.)

Please help support these guys. They don't travel extravagantly (15 passanger van, what was that smell???) so buy their stuff and I will watch their website so I can go see another show.

5 out of 5 stars Diamond On the Cd Cover, Diamond on the Inside as well.......2004-10-31

Downhere delivers a album filled with deep lyrics that makes a person really think. On songs like "What its Like" and "Feels Like Winter" Downhere describes the pain and difficulties of just trying to live an everyday life. But ultimately the lyrics always point back to the goodness of God and relying on Him, because after all He did come down here and experience everything we have to go through. Overall the album touches on a nice variety of subjects, all with the same realistic lyrical depth. The album is worth buying for the track "Starspin" alone. One of the catchiest and best songs I've heard in a long time, it hits in all the right spots. Could be used as an awesome worship song if it was done right.

Musically the album is just as good as its lyrical content. Downhere's style could be described as solid melodic rock mixed with piano and strings. The guitars have nice melodic riffs that create nice shifts in the music, which keeps it interesting. The lead singer has a powerful voice with nice range that complements the music perfectly. So Much for Substitutes is one of those cds that the more you listen to it the more you love it, at least thats been the case for me.

I think the only reason these guys aren't more popular right now is because not enough people have heard of them yet. This cd comes highly recommended for fans of Jeremy Camp, DcTalk, Jars of Clay, Overflow, Plumb, Sanctus Real, Switchfoot, Third Day, Tree 63, and Wideawake. Basically if your a fan of good quality rock check these guys out, if enough people discover this diamond in the rough, they won't be flying under the radar for long.

5 out of 5 stars Carolyn Gailitis.......2004-07-16

How can you not love these guys! They Rock!

I was there at Briercrest when these guys first started off and they were incredible then, I think they keep getting better with time. Their sound is like no other band I have ever heard. Their harmonies are out of this world, Mark and Jason do an outstanding job!

They present a challenge to all of those who are willing to listen.

You have to check out this album. You are crazy if you don't!

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this CD.......2004-11-10

This CD is spectacular. I find myself leaving in my CD player to listen to it over and over again. They have a light rock sound somewhat similar to Jars of Clay and their lyrics are great. The song Calmer of the Storm is one of my favorite songs right now by any artist. I cannot recomend this CD more. It is great.

5 out of 5 stars Memorize till my hearts content..........2003-03-18

Downhere have brought forth a sound that would definitely please those who also love Ten Shekel Shirt, Sonicflood, and By the Tree and other such groups. It's great original worship-style music that just yearns to be memorized and sung along to. My personal favorites are Calmer of the Storm, Great Are You, and Free Me Up.

It's great to see that there are some Canadian Christian Artists out there!!

5 out of 5 stars Great sound in Contemporary Christian.......2002-07-13

I first saw Down Here as an opening act for a Sonic Flood concert. I couldn't believe my ears, hearing this amazing music. They have a good strong sound in their instruments, and great voices to match. The lyrics amaze me; The meanings can be simple topics you'd agree with at one point, but over time, those same songs may end up reaching you on a deeper level according to what's happening in your life. This album is very powerful.
The band consists of Marc Martel (Lead Vocals, Background Vocals, Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Marmonica, Dobro), Jason Germain (Lead Vocals, Background Vocals, Piano, Keyboards, B3, Acoustic Guitars), Jeremy Theissen (Drums & Percussion), and Glenn Lavender (Bass Guitar). My youth group met them all after that Sonic Flood concert, and they are really great, fun guys. This album is an awesome start for them, ranging from upbeat songs ("Larger than Life", "Makimg Me"), to soft beautiful ones ("Great Are You" Though the lyrics inside the cover list it as "Great You Are," I suppose there was just some confusion.) And be sure not to stop your stereo after track 11, because you'll get a nice surprise approximately 3 minutes into the following one.
You can visit their official site at [website] to get more information about the members or their music career in general. These are definitely some good-hearted, talented guys with a great future in store. It's always moving to see people using their gifts for God, and I congratulate them for their great success in doing so.

5 out of 5 stars THumbs up from this newcomer!.......2003-10-28

I am a relative newcomer to the Christian rock scene. I was looking for a cool, contemporary, real sound with a good, solid, not corny message. I listened to a lot of samples. And I made the perfect choice in downhere's self-titled album. Their sound reminds me at times of U2, Counting Crows, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater, even Springsteen (ok, I have a great imagination...).
The first track, "Larger Than Life," is from the movie Joshua, which is where I heard these guys. Other great tracks are Protest to Praise, Raincoat and Making Me. I can listen to this stuff working out, even! The language is very common and natural, not preachy. Just right for me.

5 out of 5 stars downhere was downright awsome!!.......2003-03-05

I saw these guys at R.Y.O.T in Indiana last summer. They gave us a awsome night of worship.I got to meet them before worship and after and they are truly all men of GOD.They signed CDs and shirts and fellowshipped with the kids.My son bought the CD and we listen to it all the time.A must have for all.

5 out of 5 stars Great lyrics rarely seen in the Christian music world..........2002-11-05

What I love best about Downhere is that they are not afraid to write honest lyrics that don't try to cover up all the problems of the world. In the Christian music scene, there are way too many songs saying "Jesus makes all things great - so smile and be happy!"

Downhere takes the road less-travelled and comes through with songs like "Protest to Praise" *quotes* "I'm wrestling my thoughts, I'm overcome - would you give me up? I'm asking, Lord, There's nowhere I sense your presence here..." Their songs acknowledge that being a believer in Christ doesn't mean life on Earth will be like a bed of roses.

Not all the songs take such a serious route. Worship songs and praise choruses also abound - my favorites being "Free Me Up" and "Great Are You".

This is a group who doesn't conform to the culturally accepted bubblegum feel-goody Christian songs. Two thumbs up to Downhere - you guys are awesome and I highly respect your decisions to value your art above your "marketability"! Stay true to your messages and you will go far!

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2002-09-10

Downhere came to my church last night and gave us an awesome concert, so natrally I bought the CD right then and there. The CD isn't as good as seeing them live, but that's always the case. Only regret I have about this CD is that a couple of songs that I loved aren't on here, but they were talking about hitting the studio fairly soon, and I will certainly pick up anything that this bands puts out as soon as I can get my hands on it. Downhere rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, simply awesome.......2002-05-01

I recently had the opportunity to listen to and hang out with Downhere this past weekend. They were unbelievable. Not only are they great muscians, but they are amazing, down to earth people. Every song on the CD is excellent, although my personal favorites are "Larger than Life" , "Free Me Up" , and "Great Are You". Help this great band get started by buying their CD today!!

    Product Description

This CD takes the Biblical truths from Fred Stoeker's book TACTICS and sets them to music. Each song has been selected because of the contribution it makes to the overall message of the abum -- a message that safeguards and defends purity in the mind and heart. The CD includes four all-new songs, four new recordings of previously released songs, and four songs from existing CDs. Created especially for young men, the early tracks are about the cost of sin in our relationship with God, the middle tracks are about repentance and fighting for victory over that sin, and the last tracks are about our relationships with the Lord and with the opposite sex, and what sexual purity means in those relationships. The project includes 8 outstanding vocalists, including Matthew West, Michael O'Brien (formerly of NEWSONG), Mike Weaver (Big Daddy Weaver), downhere, Aaron Blanton (By The Tree), Lee Spoken, and Chuck Dennie (former lead singer, By The Tree). Dennie also recorded and produced the album, and wrote or co-wrote several songs. Best-selling author Fred Stoeker (Every Man's Battle, Every Young Man's Battle, Tactics), conceived of the project as part of an overall new shift in emphasis in his speaking and writing ministry. He has begun actively developing resources that equip young men to take a defensive posture towards temptation. His goal is to let these 12 outstanding songs contribute to a new inner environment for men everywhere, especially young men.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2007-05-17

I will admit to some bias up-front: I co-authored "Every Young Man's Battle" with Fred Stoeker, who was instrumental in putting this collection of great songs together . . . a collection with a heart and a message. This isn't wimpy music but rather a grouping of rockers and Bono-esque songs from the heart about a topic close to young men's lives: how they look at and treat other women. My favorite song is the opening track--"The Lie" by Matthew West. You won't be deceived after getting your ears around this big beat.

5 out of 5 stars Win This War is AWESOME!!.......2007-05-09

I loved this CD! It is so unique and different from anything I'd ever heard before. The contemporary artists do an amazing job of putting feeling and emotion into the songs. A few of these songs I had heard before, but many of them were previously unreleased. While each song is unique in its own way, they all come together to make up a truly great CD. Each song represents a specific part of the battle to win against sexual temptation. "Win this War" takes the listener through a journey to regain sexual purity. As a girl, it would really impress me if a guy were listening to this CD. However, it isn't only for those people struggling with sexual purity. Anyone who has ever struggled with any type of sin in their lives (which would mean everyone) would be able to find comfort and joy through this CD. It is awesome!!
