5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05

If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17

This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.

4 out of 5 stars Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11

Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.

2 out of 5 stars New version available in UK.......2006-02-18

This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.

Album Description

Cantus proudly announces the release of "Deep River," a treasury of African-American Spirituals. The Spiritual represents the musical melting pot of America like no other type of song by at once revealing its African roots while reflecting the American experience with music that speaks of both hardship and hope. The album features some of the most beloved American folk songs such as "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel", "Were You There", "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" and "Soon-ah Will Be Done." "Deep River" also delves into the roots of American roots music by exclusively featuring music by the preeminent first and second generation African-American composers - Harry T. Burleigh, William Dawson, John W. Work and Jester Hairston - in both well known and long forgotten arrangements of these immortal songs. Recorded by Stereophile Magazine editor John Atkinson in 24 bit sound, "Deep River" is a treat for the ears and a balm for the soul.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Oil and Water..........2005-10-05

Don't Get me wrong... Cantus is one of the finest male chamber choirs around right now. They do marvelous work and cover a wide variety. Unfortunately, spirituals are not exactly Cantus's strongest suit. The biggest hindrance to this recording is that Cantus does not effectively capture the "spirit" of a spiritual. The music almost sounds funny because the spirituals are sung with very traditional, very trained classical voices. I love hearing people sing who were trained very meticulously to sing well, but I don't want to hear someone sing "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel" like Pavoratti. It sounds really funny and doen't capture the character of the music.
Another issue that I have with this recording (and most of Cantus's other recordings at that) is that it was recorded so softly. I don't like to have to feel like I am cranking my speakers to hear the music effectively. Being an active listener, I like to listen to music loud just because I can hear more layers when its loud. The low recording volume on the CD really hinders the active listening experience, leaving the CD to lend itself to the purpose of background music and passive listening.
Also, the first 5 arrangements on the disc are fairly bland. They are lack variety and musicality. Only until "Great God Almighty" comes around does the listener truly become exposed to really good choral writing. Other standing out arrangements are "Where You There?" which is absolutely moving, "There Is A Balm In Gilead" which is very well written, "Deep River" which is so tranquil and relaxing, and "Soon Ah Will Be Done" and "In His Care-O" are great bouncy arrangements.
Essentially, Cantus and Spirituals are just oil and water: they don't mix so well. Aside from a hand full of bland arrangements and a very low mixing job the CD only has one real hindrance of a problem: Cantus doesn't make the distinction between Spirituals and Brahms.

3 out of 5 stars a little too wobbly for me.......2005-03-03

I am familiar with this group and their origins with the world famous St. Olaf Choir of Northfield, MN. While the singers are obviously talented, I felt like I was listening to 11 "solo" singers, rather than a tight ensemble. Way too much individual vibrato even considering the free-flowing genre of the music. I don't want them to be as "tight" as San Francisco's "Chanticleer", but holy smoke, there has got to be something in the middle. Maybe an association with Dale Warland would help, because they obviously have great potential.

5 out of 5 stars A replacement for Robert Shaw.......2004-12-03

Many years ago I had a vinyl record by the Robert Shaw Chorale the title of which was "Deep River." I've been waiting for it to be reissued on cd and have purchased many recordings of negro spirituals on cd hoping to find one where the performance could be compared favorably with the Robert Shaw recording. All of the tries were busts until I found this one. Wow!!! This is a super recoridng of those spirituals. The only thing it lacks is the female voices but thi group of males needs to make no apologies. I love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recording by One of our Finest Choral Ensembles.......2004-10-24

"Take this Hammer,' "Steal Away," and "My Lord What a Morning" are just three of the acappella treasures recorded in a warm, natural accoustic by these nine superb singers from Minnesota. The arrangements they've chosen are as complex and moving as their source lyrics and melodies, and the the 24-bit recording by John Atkinson is as good as you get.

It's not easy to make spirituals sound fresh, dynamic and viscerally affecting. But that's exactly what Cantus has done. This is choral singing of the highest order recorded by a master of recorded sound.

I do hope Cantus continues to record on this or another independent label. A big music conglomerate would just glitz it up.

These young men have accomplished so many splendid things on their own over the past nine years, and this release is their best by far.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Ensemble.......2004-04-15

I bought "let Your Voice Be Heard" some time ago and really loved the interpretations, the virtuosity of the singing and the clarity of the recording. I'm a Stereophile subscriber and read the articles by Atkinson regarding the recording sessions - they take great care to do a good job and it shows.

This CD is compelling, if you like choral music you will love this disc. Listen to it a few times and you will go away singing.

There are a couple of spirituals on this disc that are also on "Let your voice..." but in different arrangements.

    5 out of 5 stars Top-notch sooth-ability! .......2005-03-09

Throughout this immeasurably relaxing album are the predominant natural sounds of both water and birdsong that get supported by an assortment of gentle keyboard instrumentations. From Ashron's singing bowls to Scholl's spacescape, from Shajan's pouring rain stick to the Gordon's bird and waterscapes, all lend the listener to a perfect blend of sound for bathing the mind and soothing the spirit. Sophia has the only track with vocals, but its ethereal voices are so sweet one forgives the gentle intrusion. In all, this is the Gordon's most relaxing and rewarding album for letting go. Top-notch sooth-ability!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredibly Peaceful & Moving.......2005-03-01

This latest compilation of healing music from Sequoia Records is nothing less than brilliant. A follow up to their beautifully relaxing "Musical Healing" release from several years back, Perfect Balance: Musical Healing Vol. 2 surpasses the first in depth, dynamic and serenity. The majority of tracks here are mainly new releases along with a few classics from legendary healing music pioneers, David & Steve Gordon. These are balanced perfectly with some amazingly traquil tracks from such healing music luminaries as Shajan, Sophia and several new artists of note, including Bernd Scholl, whose track "Watermoon" blissfully carries the listener away on an ocean of eternal calm and Ashron, whose "Golden Light" bathes the listener in a waterfall of shimmering sound. This 69 plus minute release is superbly produed, mixed and sequenced allowing for ultimate release and relaxation and is long enough to just let it run for accompanying any healing arts session. An exceptional release.

If you are looking for the soulfull melodic or jubilation of traditional American Negro spirituals, this is not it. But it is masterful musicianship.

3 out of 5 stars Great opera, not spiritual style I thought title suggested........2005-09-08

This is a very good classical collection. The rating would have been higher if the description had suggested the actual style of the music. I am giving it 3 stars because this is a very good OPERA style collection - not the spiritual style I was hoping for. Given the title and simple instruments, I thought it would be different - more relaxed. I wish a sample of the music had been available. If you want spirituals sung in an OPERA style you will love this. She is an amazing talent.

    5 out of 5 stars A Glorious Burgeoning Diva!.......2005-05-07

Though this particular selection of songs may not be one the recital lover would choose, MOSAIC introduces to the recording audience the magnificent voice of Angela M. Brown, a gifted singer whose career has been nurtured by appearances with small opera companies until her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 'Aida' last year. Now this intelligent singer is currently replacing the indomitable Jessye Norman in a Detroit Opera premiere and even in that vulnerable position of comparison she is making a triumphant statement.

MOSAIC is pleasant enough recital of African American Spirituals with sensitive piano and guitar accompaniment. But it is in the few unaccompanied songs that the splendor of this very large voice with a seemingly bottomless register is best displayed. Brown has a glowing top as well as a lush bottom in her register and her attention to the control of the cascade of sound is simply thrilling. Brown knows this repertoire well and is convincing in her delivery of not only the message but the depth of emotion of each song.

Hopefully a recording of songs and arias will follow soon, especially as her opera reputation grows. But for now, MOSAIC is a fine introduction to a voice whose destiny seems assured. Grady Harp, May 05

5 out of 5 stars Classical music with heart and soul.......2005-03-01

Daniel Alexander Payne, sixth bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church worked tirelessly to purge emotionalism from African American modes of worship, and derided spirituals as "corn field ditties." Starting with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and into current century, composers such as Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Moses Hogan and Joseph Joubert have sought new, classical interpretations of these timeless, soulful songs.

I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. Spirituals ARE emotional, expressions of unbearable pain, of longing, of optimism and ultimate belief in salvation. To strip them of that by prettying them up is to deny their very reason for being.

But having said all that: I absolutely loved MOSAIC! Angela Brown does not let her classical training get in the way of putting a song over with heart and soul. She obviously loves these songs, and her rich voice moved me to tears on several occasions. The instrumental accompaniments (Joseph Joubert on piano, Tyron Cooper on guitar) are gorgeously subtle and supportive.

The sound quality of this disc is superb, a fitting tribute to the many African American composers represented here. Highly recommended!

What I love about this album is that all three members of Na Leo Pilimehana sing solo songs. I like how they all have different voices and different styles. I think Nalani's voice sounds like Robi Kahakalau, Lehua's reminds me a bit of Jasmine Trias, and Angela's sounds not that much like Cher but somewhat. Some of my favorite tracks are "More Than Memories" sung by Nalani, "Saving Forever" by Lehua which I dedicated to my friend, and "All Is Right With Me" by Angela. What a great CD!

I love this Na Leo CD, it's their most adventurous recording yet. This record shows off the awesome talent of the three girls, now Women that have been the female sound of Hawaii for over 20 years.

When I first visited Hawaii about 15 years ago I heard Na Leo songs everywhere I went, hotel lobby, rental car radio, poolside... well that has not changed, if you have visited Hawaii, you have heard the sweet vocals & harmonies of Na Leo. Feel The Spirit combines the Island inspired classic sound of Na Leo harmonies with fantastic standout lead vocal performances. Recorded & Produced by world famous Keith Olsen, this is my favorite Na Leo album yet. If you love great music you will love this amazing CD.

      2 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2005-12-26

I never thought I would say it, but - I really don't care for this new album by one of Hawaii's premier vocal groups. They mention in the liner notes about "going in a new direction." Well ladies, in my opinion it's the wrong one. They've hooked themselves up with a new producer, and guess what: it's over produced! Synthesizers, unnecessary string arrangements, etc. - you get the idea. Na Leo has gained many fans over the years with their great vocal harmonies and they just don't need all this extra junk! They even felt compelled to remake one of their most beautiful classics, Flying With Angels. This whole album ends up coming off like just one more pop song confection with little substance. Na Leo: don't forget where you came from!

John Rutter's Feel the Spirit, for mezzo-soprano, choir, and orchestra, was premiered in June 2001 in Carnegie Hall. Made up of appealing arrangements of familiar spirituals ("Deep River," "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," etc.) in a range of styles (from big-band and the blues to Caribbean and close harmony), it was conceived as a showcase for Melanie Marshall. Her warm, creamy sound is certainly captivating, while the Cambridge Singers are fresh-voiced, flexible, and alert.

Of equal interest are the smaller-scale Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare from George Shearing and Rutter's Birthday Madrigals, written by Rutter for Shearing's 75th birthday. Both works feature Shakespearean texts, while Rutter also sets other poets of the same period. Plenty to catch the ear here--try Shearing's wistful "Who Is Silvia?" with its naughty take on Schubert, and the delightfully snappy "Fie on sinful fantasy." Rutter's madrigals are just as beguiling, and there in the middle is an example of the kind of introspective number that displays the intriguing other side to his musical personality--a setting of "Draw On Sweet Night" as searching in its own way as John Wilbye's original madrigal. Rutter's direction is exemplary throughout. --Andrew Green

      Album Description

Strong, stirring spirituals and tuneful, jazz-flavored settings of Shakespeare's timeless lyrics are the mouth-watering ingredients of the Cambridge Singers' eagerly-awaited new album Feel the Spirit. John Rutter has written vivid new arrangements of seven well-loved American spirituals for choir, with soloist Melanie Marshall and the BBC Concert Orchestra joining with the Cambridge Singers for this world premiere recording. Another notable `first' is jazz legend George Shearing's captivating new cycle of Shakespeare settings, Songs and Sonnets. Those who associate George Shearing with instrumental jazz (and of course with his immortal Lullaby of Birdland) will be astonished and delighted at the youthful charm and skillful word-setting of this 81-year old master's choral writing. The final touch of sparkle is added by Proms favorite Wayne Marshall's piano, with Malcolm Creese on bass. To complete the album, John Rutter's own Birthday Madrigals - written in 1995 to celebrate George Shearing's 75th birthday - also receives their premiere recording.

“…You'd have to be a real killjoy to be able to resist this disc. FIVE STARS!”- BBC Music Magazine

“These luscious arrangements bear repeated listening: orchestrally colorful and playfully witty… a delightful disc. Strongly recommended!” - Gramophone

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05

John Rutter states the following: "This album, which has an Anglo-America thread running through it, is a homage to three of my favorite musical traditions-the spiritual, the madrigal, and American song-and at the same time, a homage to two remarkable Englishmen,William Shakespeare and George Shearing."
'Feel the Spirit' is a cycle of seven spirituals arranged for mezzo-soprano soloist, choir and orchestra. It premiered in June 2001 in Carnegie Hall, New York. They are quite well-known in this country, but Rutter makes them seem fresh and new.
Rutter and Shearing were both born in London, and have similar music backgrounds. They got to know each other in America during the 1990's, when Shearing was becoming interested in choral music, at which time he wrote his second Shakespeare Song cycle, 'Songs and Sonnets'. Again the tunes chosen are quite familiar to most music lovers, and I personally find them very attractive to hear.
I have actually performed 'The heavenly aeroplance, several times with choirs; it's fun to sing and gets an enthusiastic audience reaction every time. It is actually an Ozark folk song from the Missouri mountains to which Rutter wrote his own tune.
The 'Lord of the Dance' is taken from an American Shaker song 'The Gift to be Simple', and was first popularized in Aaron Copland's 'Appalachian Spring'. And later used by the English hymn-writer Sydney Carter inspired by the traditional carol'Tomorrow shall be my dancing day'.
The 'Birthday Madrigals' is Rutter's musical tribute to George Shearing on his 75th birthday, written in 1995, and can only loosely be called madrigals.
Hoagy Carmilchael's 'Skylark' completes the album as one of the lovliest American songs from the golden age of American song.
This is a very easy to listen to disc; a good one to put on when all you want to hear is something comfortably familiar, but not boring! It is well-sung and skillfully put together.

      4 out of 5 stars Almost Rutter............2002-03-03

John Rutter is not only a friend, but one of my favorite composers. I have sung his music and own most of the CDs. I listened carefully to "Feel the Spirit", looking forward to another amazing study in English music combined with excellent arrangements and sensitive vocal shaping.(One of my choir friends told me I must buy the disc, which I did at her enthusiastic recommendation.) However, the disc seems to be a collage of a number of styles and ideas that may work in clumps. Some upbeat, almost jazzy arrangements have their roots with George Shearing, the venerable blind English jazz master. The spiritual arrangements were almost embarassing. I felt that the selection and treatmments thereof really didn't fit the genre of "classic" spirituals.
John Rutter is such a beloved composer I hate to berate him even a pinch. But I feel this disc is really a classroom study in different styles, arrangements, and ideas, rather than another enjoyable Rutter disc to be played over and over again. Some of the Shakespeare songs were delightful. But, I feel the disc is somewhat uneven. However, I love John Rutter's work, and recommend this disc to those who do, also!..Madge Bruner Hazen

5 out of 5 stars A must have for John Rutter fans.......2002-02-05

The Cambridge Singer's have an outstanding reputation for their choral music under the direction of John Rutter. This recording lives up to Collegium's standard of high quality recordings. Rutter's "Heavenly Aeroplane" is a kick! My 11 month old kid dances to it. "Who is Sylvia" is hauntingly beautiful.
