Album Description

The music of this album celebrates the most native of our musical experiences with lullabies from many lands and languages - from Appalachia, from the north of England, from Wales, Norway, Sicily, the Basque lands, and Korea - with the beauty of the treble voice drawing these distant lands and cultures together. In Western heritage, the greatest outpouring of lullaby music comes from images of Mary and the baby Jesus.

Yet this is not essentially a Christmas album, nor a sacred album, though such themes keep reappearing, but rather an experience of rocking, soothing music. Sung only by boys' voices and accompanied by a few instruments, (piano, recorder, cello and violin)each sung lullaby - or group of lullabies - is complemented by an unsung 'cradle song,' short little piano interludes, taking the listener from one lullaby to the next as in a dream.

Smooth jazz & gospel sounds enhance Christmas favorites.......2002-12-07

I was sceptical about this recording because the artists are all unknown to me and because the songs are mainly considered religious in nature. The mixture of smooth jazz and traditional carols just didn't quite hit me as a good idea, until I listened to the CD. After hearing and being impressed by the performances, I discovered that these artists are actually gospel jazz artists, and therefore, their interpretations are reverently done.

Each of the principal artists are featured on at least two numbers. Donald Hayes sax comes out quite well on the secular "This Christmas" and even better on "Oh Holy Night" and "O Come All Ye Faithful".

Derrick Johnson on piano takes the lead on "Silent Night" and "First Noel" while Ralph Lofton on the organ gives us "Little Drummer Boy" and Kirk Franklin's "Now Behold The Lamb". Jonathan Dubose Jr.'s guitar is dominant on "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the second of the two secular songs, "The Christmas Song". The CD concludes with a beautiful arrangement of "What Child Is This" featuring keyboards, guitar, strings, and background vocals.

Of the three smooth jazz Christmas albums I've reviewed this year, this one easily ranks with the one from Dave Koz & Friends.

This is one of the best Christmas CD's I've ever
owned. I love smooth jazz, and I know this is
gospel, but this outranks Grover Washington, Boney
James, Kirk Whalum, Kenny G and all others. I
honestly couldn't stop listening to it!! If you
don't have it, PLEASE get it, I assure you you'll
be glad you did.

Zupe - Christmas Piano.......2005-11-22

This is an absolutely beautiful collection of Christmas music in the most classic style of piano. It warms your heart, and truly brings you into the spirit of the season. It quickly became one of my very favorite CDs to play during the holidays. I kept the CD on constant "replay"!!! Zupe is one of the finest musical artists yet to truly be discovered.
