Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can now rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with occasional mandolin, autoharp, accordion, and even organ, all used as icing on a cake of tunes that further refine his established style. Perhaps the most startling song is the viciously anti-war "Dad's Going to Kill Me," about a soldier stationed in Baghdad (the "Dad" of the title), wondering if he will survive another day. "Guns are the Tongues" finds Thompson telling the tragic tale of a young man enticed by a woman's charms ending up as a suicide-bombing terrorist. Thompson's dramatic guitar solos are kept on low boil, occasionally bubbling up but never hogging the spotlight. They are, along with his distinctive vocals, actors in a play of characteristically classy tunes that will thrill Thompson's fans, who have been waiting for just such a set of literate and challenging music from a musician who never delivers less. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
Literate rocker Richard Thompson's new album, Sweet Warrior, is a return to his classic electric sound, his first plugged-in album since 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Filled with 14 songs of stories of loss and betrayal, the album also contains one of Thompson's most overtly political songs to date, "Dad's Gonna Kill Me," told from the perspective of a nervous young soldier stationed in Baghdad (abbreviated as "Dad" in the song). Richard Thompson is a consummate singer, songwriter, and guitarist. His career stretches back to the late '60s, when he was a founding member of the British folk-rock Fairport Convention. In the late '70s, with his then-wife, Linda, he recorded Shoot Out the Lights, which regularly makes critics' lists of the best records of all time. In the '90s, he experienced another career renaissance with the album Rumor & Sigh and he remains an elder-statesman of alternative rock.
Customer Reviews:
Cool new album.......2007-07-15
Have been listening to it for a week. More up-tempo than his last album--Front Parlour Ballads--and overall, better. Also more consistent than 2003's The Old Kit Bag. Cool album.
Sweet Warrior - Fantastic!!!!.......2007-07-14
Sweet Warrior allows you to be in your own "private" concert - captures his muscianship - must have!
Thomo Does It Again!.......2007-07-11
Another superlative CD from Richard Thompson. Lyrically and instrumentally he is without peer. I keep expecting the odd bad record, but they just don't come from this genius of folk-rock. Together with Neil Young and possibly Van Morrison, he is the only artist whose CD I would buy unheard.
As good as his best..........2007-07-04
Wow! I was turned on to Richard Thompson only about 8 years ago, but have since become an ardent fan and I've been picking up anything I could by him ever since.
I generally don't like a heavy dose of political opinion mixed in with my music, but RT pulls it off here without being annoying, and considering the state of worldwide affairs it's actually pretty timely anyway. His anger in I'll Never Give it Up makes me wonder if he's dissing Bush or Blair, but one's own interpretation of the lyrics is what can make a song so delicious. His guitar playing continues to send shivers down my spine, especially on the track Take Care the Road You Choose. And who cannot feel sharp pangs of sorrow for the poor soldier in Dad's Gonna Kill Me ? Wow. RT's ability to elicit such emotion (through his lyrics or playing) are part of what make him such a treasure.
All of the songs are at least good, and most are outright great. In my opinion, this album will stand with RT's all-time bests.
WOW !.......2007-06-24
A truely great album oops I mean CD. I still can not get used to saying that. Every track is great !

40th Anniversary Edition Of The Classic Album!
1965's Whipped Cream & Other Delights transformed Herb Alpert & The Tijuana into bonafide superstars, spending an incredible 8 straight weeks at the top of the charts. The album was not only memorable for its music, but for the iconic cover art which featured model Dolores Erickson strategically swathed in whipped cream. The original twelve tracks revolve around the theme of food and include such classics the triple Grammy-winning hit, "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." This special 40th Anniversary edition features two studio bonus tracks along with a 20-page booklet and a collector's poster.
Each album in the Herb Alpert Signature Series features meticulously remastered sound, deluxe packaging, detailed liner notes, and an intro by Herb Alpert containing personal recollections and anecdotes.

PASS THE TEQUILA! AND LISTEN TO THE BRASS! ONE OF MY FAVORITES.......2007-07-12
I am repeating this story you are about to read as it gives an explanation of why I love this music so much! "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" has many of the songs on it used on the ride you are about to read about. It is one of my favorite Herb albums for that reason and I was mesmerized(as a kid)looking at that gorgeous cover! That being said....Please read on.....I have fond memories of the music of Herb Alpert! I was introduced to him at an early age as my parents were fans of his records. I didn't hear much of him again until I was coming of age in Wildwood N.J. at the age of 15 when I used to party under the boardwalk with my friends and our girlfriends underneath Hunt's Pier's "El Scrambler" ride. The ride played Herb Alpert tunes non stop! I guess you could say I became a "Man" underneath that pier with my first love listening to the Tijuana Brass. Later in life in my 30's I was taking a break from playing in a band in the local bars,I became a DJ and I would mix Herb Alpert in my mixes and buy shots of Tequila for my fans! To this day when I play these songs at parties we all look for the Tequila bottle! This is a one of a kind sound and if I were stranded on a desert island with only a few albums, Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass would be included in that collection! This is one of his best albums. I no longer own the original records so, I can not say if the new cd's are true to the originals. They sound fantastic to my ear!
Vintage Delights.......2007-05-14
It had been a long time since I heard this album on vinyl, but all the memories came flooding back. I had forgotten how well Herb and the guys actually played, and that each piece had its own hook! I recommend this CD as a piece of pop musical history, whose sound is every bit as fresh today as it was 40 years ago.
Excellent Music.......2007-05-10
I'm very please with my CD "Whipped Cream & Other Delights (40th Anniversary Edition)
~ Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass"

Whipped Cream: Not for the Lactose Intolerant........2007-04-29
1965's Whipped Cream & Other Delights transformed Dolores Erickson into the bonafide superstar of my adolescent whipped cream fantasies. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass didn't do so bad, either, spending an incredible 8 straight weeks at the top of the charts. The memorable cover might have accounted for a large percentage of sales, especially among my demographic, but the music didn't hurt.
This is a prime example of the 60's "concept" album, with all of the intrumentals named after food. Lollipops & Roses." "A Taste of Honey" and the Dating Game theme "Whipped Cream." Etc. Etc. It caught the Zietgeist and rode it like a wave. Boys in Elementary School were inspired to learn the trumpet. I, among them.
I think the first record I purchased was Herb Alpert & TJB, but it wasn't this album, it was a 45 single.
I later did get this album, and several others of theirs, and then my neighbor's mother borrowed it for a wild party, and it got scratched from all the crazy drunken dancing.
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass - Whipped Cream w/other delights CD.......2007-04-12

Pianist Keiko Matsui, a favorite among smooth jazz and crossover fans for her elegant melodic style, breaks new ground on several fronts with Moyo. Having split with her husband Kazu Matsui, who produced her previous albums, she produced it herself, for a new label (Shout Factory), and recorded much of it in South Africa (as well as Japan, New York, California, and Colorado). Moyo has a high special-guest quotient: trumpeter Hugh Masekela, saxophonists Paul Taylor and Gerald Albright, and singer-bassist Richard Bona are featured. But the clean and sometimes spare arrangements allow the personal nature of the writing to come through. When Matsui trusts in the forceful lyricism of her playing, as on the title track (Swahili for "Heart and Soul"), she makes the strongest impression. But even when she employs synthesizer and soprano sax sweetening, the songs maintain their honest expression. The rhythmic thrust of South African-derived songs such as "After the Rain" may well open her up to a new audience. --Lloyd Sachs
Album Description
Contemporary jazz icon Keiko Matsui's new album, (Swahili for "heart and soul"), recorded with local musicians in South Africa, Japan and the United States, introduces new sounds and rhythms to her elegant piano melodies and gentle jazz grooves. For this project, Keiko invited other artists into the creative process, including legendary trumpeter Hugh Masakela, sax player Gerald Albright, soprano sax player Paul Taylor, bassist/vocalist Richard Bona, drummer Akira Jimbo and vocalist Waldemar Bastos.
Customer Reviews:
Keiko Matsui at her best.......2007-07-16
I have become a Keiko Matsui fan, and for an old sixties hippy, that's a big statement. In fact, I will say that this lady's lovely piano melodies coupled with a cogent rhythm in many cases are very often the background music to my own artistic moments. I believe Keiko Matsui is the most talented artist I have discovered since the Beatles! This album offers fresh, new adventures, but always there are the gentle Matsui melodies, and the input of her talented, multi-dimensional friends. Keiko's music matters, it is creative but also beautiful, calming but also very alive. You can't buy better by any artist!
Not Keiko Matsui-bland and piano in background.......2007-07-08
I have bought all of her prior albums, and many by her husband Kazu, and have usually been pleased with the distinctive variety of mix with piano and a variety of jazz or new age styles. But while this CD has a cut or two worth listening, most of this could be exchanged blindfolded with a large number of other boring lounge acts. Unfortunately, this album is like the many other "popular" jazz artists who tend to all sound alike, akin to the bland Americanized taste of a Mexican meal that is on the menu at almost every chain restaurant in the country. She used to be different, original and....I was listening to this for the first time in my office and someone came by and said "I thought you didn't like Kenny G." (I don't!) On many cuts, the main sound is sax, or some other not-her, so if you are looking for a variety of playing, like Wildflower to Dream Walk to others, it is not here.
Interesting Stuff.......2007-05-30
This is the first Moyo CD i've heard. It's very interesting, very good. Easy listening, and very smooth. I like the tempo's and the quality of the music.
I am definitely interested in listening to more.
Wonderful cd.......2007-05-27
Keiko Matsui is a awesome cd with wonderful arrangements & wonderful songs. She just keeps getting better on each new cd. Shes a awesome musician. I feel she as awesome as Jim Brickman, David Benoit & Bob James. Id say to go out to buy this new release of hers as quikly as you can & youll be glad you did. George
Another Masterpiece.......2007-05-26
I got a sneak peak of Moyo when I went to Keiko Matsui's concert in March, have been looking forward to the CD since then. I am happy to play this loud again in my ears!

There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.
Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The first collection to feature hits from their entire career!
Along with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band is the definitive Southern rock band. Over their storied career, they've seamlessly blended rock, country, jazz, pop, blues and soul into a beguiling blend of the best music that The South and America has to offer. The 2-disc Anthology is the first collection to pull together the highlights from their 30-year career.
It contains not only their biggest hits"Fire On The Mountain," "Heard It In A Love Song," "Last Of The Singing Cowboys," "Can't You See," "Take The Highway"but also such fan favorites as "Where A Country Boy Belongs," "I Should Have Never Started Lovin' You," and "Cattle Drive." Since MTB's on-stage prowess is legendary, a live video clip has been included as a bonus.

a good starting place........2007-07-04
this compilation is the perfect starting point for someone new to marshall tucker. and it's a little more poignant given george mccorkle's death on 6/29/07 from cancer. this was the best band america ever produced. they were THAT good!
I second Mike S........2007-06-03
To leave off "this ole cowboy" is inexcusable, or a gross mistake. Listen to that song, and you'll agree.
Even thought "This Ole Cowbay" was left out...still a 5 Star.......2007-05-27
Yes it is unfortunate that "This Ole Cowboy" was left off the greatest hits CD...but we, as consumers do not know why. Perhaps the holder of the publishing rights "sold" their interest in the song thinking that "This Ole Cowboy" would just fade away. Music, unfortunately, is a business...with fat men smoking fat cigars making fat money. Choices are made that we simply cannot understand. The best we can do is be thankful for what we have in so much beautiful music...there, I feel better.
After see them in concert.......2007-05-13
A good CD that I brought after seeing them in concert. If you like flutes I would suggest buying this CD.
Great Listening.......2007-05-13
I have it and I recommend this CD to anyone who even remotely likes Marshall Tucker. I had no idea of the versatality of this band.

JOLLYMON.......2007-07-12
The British Beat is a wonderful selection of of 60's music.
The 3 discs include a variety of good music that will be sure to please any fan of the 60's. The only thing missing is of course THE BEATLES.
Otherwise, I would give it a BEST BUY rating!!!
Just "OK".......2007-07-12
Nice collection. Was dissapointed though that Do Wah Diddy is in mono when it's in stereo on many collections. Liner notes don't indicated exactly which cuts are first time stereo mixes.

This CD was really good, it was all the original artists and their music which takes me back to when I was a teenager. What great music we enjoyed then as well as now.......
the british beat.......2007-05-27
I am very glad to add this cd to my "oldies" collection. In the future I will be looking to add more british rock to my collection.
Great collection.......2007-05-21
A very nice collection of works from British singers and groups of the 1960s. This 3 CD set, as some note, costs a bunch, but it takes one back in time very nicely. Also, in the version that I acquired, there is a bonus CD that includes some of the best works of that decade--The Animals sing "House of the Rising Sun"; Marianne Faithfull does "As Tears Go By"; there are Herman's Hermits classics, "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" and "There's a Kind of Hush." Of course, there are obvious absences, such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, etc. Some strange songs show up, too. Is "Winchester Cathedral" really a song to be included here? Do we need four cuts from Dusty Springfield, good as she might be?
That said, many of these songs are classics of the 60s. Think about these:
The Troggs ("Wild Thing"); The Mindbenders ("A Groovy Kind of Love"); Gerry and the Pacemakers ("Ferry Cross the Mersey" and "How Do You Do It?"); Manfred Mann ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy"); Donovan ("Mellow Yellow"); The Searchers ("Love Potion Number Nine"); The Yardbirds ("For Your Love"); Petula Clark ("Downtown"); Lulu ("To Sir with Love"); and so on.
There is a nice booklet going with this CD set. It provides some nice photos, a brief essay on the British music of the 1960s. Worth the price? If you're someone interested in the British music of that decade, then, yes, it is probably a good investment.

Album Description
The Turtles are one of the most fondly remembered '60s pop actsquite an achievement considering that they came up in an era dominated by Motown, The Beatles and other musical giants. After releasing a series of chart-topping singles, including the #1 hit "Happy Together," the band broke up in 1970. Singers Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan continued as a duo under the name Flo & Eddie, recording albums, hosting their own syndicated radio show, and singing backup for T. Rex, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Blondie, and many others. In 1985, they reformed The Turtles as a very successful touring outfit.
Happy Together: The Very Best Of The Turtles collects the band's biggest hits, including the career-defining "Happy Together" and Top 20 smash hits "You Showed Me," "You Baby," and "Elenore." The album also features an early Warren Zevon-penned song, "Outside Chance," and Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe," as well as the classic protest anthem "Eve of Destruction."

One Of The Great Groups Of Years Gone By.......2007-06-18
This is one of the groups of the 60's if you want something to remember, or learn about from back then. They had a lot of great hits along with Peter & Gordon, Chad & Jeremy, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and the Pacemakers, & the Lovin Spoonful, just to name a few. Don't take my word for it. Listen to the sample songs and buy it for yourself. I just happened to grow up in the 60's so I didn't have a problem loving every song. After you buy this you may want to try some of the other groups next. It becomes a Blast into the Past or for those like me, a trip down Memory Lane.
A nice collection.......2007-04-14
This is a very good collection of the Turtles' biggest hits. Their lite, pop-rock was fun to listen too when I was a kid and still is! While some of the lyrics may not be the most profound, their music is enjoyable. My favorites are the classic "Happy Together", "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," and "It Ain't Me Babe."
Happy Together..........2007-02-03
I'm a fan of 60's music. "Happy Together" is one of those songs of my elementary school days. I rate this classic collection five stars!!
Cooking Turtles.......2006-11-10
These guys were great in the sixties.....Now those of us who once drifted away have come back and there we find the Turtles. Still sounding as good as they did back then...........it was great to run into these guys again...
Feel good hits from the 60's.......2006-11-06
These are the essential Feel-Good hits from the 60's. This cd features most of the Turtles happy songs. There are a couple of minor hits missing, but they're hardly missed from this collection. The Turtles had the great talent of producing happy, playful songs (Happy Together) as well as meaningful music (Eve of Destruction). The music of the 60's is definitely represented in this greatest hits collection.

Awesome CD.......2007-03-22
The sound is really original and highly creative. I like the song "Change." I like the melody a lot. "Women in Chains" is another song with a beautiful sound. "Pale Shelter" is also another good song on this cd. It brings back the early to mid 80s where life was much simplier for a lot of people.
The music is distinct, they don't sound like any other band.
Great music, but don't go see in Concert.......2007-03-16
Their music is great and I love the sound, but they are a studio group only. Their concerts are really poor. They don't play all of their hit songs, their live mix is slightly off, they don't bring a large enough supporting band and they don't relate well to the audience at all. The biggest issue I had with them in concert (Pacific Amphitheater, CA July 2006) was their song selections. They chose to play songs that they liked and not songs that the crowd wanted to hear. They left out some big hits songs to play some other songs that were really pretty bad. Which was a surprise to me as I love their music. I give them an "A" for their music and an "F" for their concert.
The long and wining road!.......2007-02-28
If I had to pronounce myself by one the most original bands of the eighties "Tears for fears" should be included even in the list of the most exigent hard fans of those ages.
They knew to combine the accurate balance between expression and sentiment, keeping in mind the vast audiences. So his musical balance allowed them to maintain the required presence and personality to achieve a special place among the great bands.
A must- have for any serious collector.
Great music !.......2007-02-08

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, folk was one of the hottest trends in pop music--particularly among listeners who considered themselves too mature for teen fare--and the Kingston Trio were the hottest act in folk. The success of the trio's clean-cut, fun-filled, depoliticized presentation inspired lots of imitators (the Brothers Four, the Highwaymen, the Chad Mitchell Trio, etc.), but it also precipitated a backlash among those who considered such collegiate acts sterile and hungered for folk music that was more authentic and socially conscious. This comprehensive two-disc anthology puts the Kingston Trio's accomplishments in perspective but also suggests that they were something of a period piece. With their rousing harmonies, engaging personalities, and ear for catchy material, the trio earned their popularity through favorites such as "Everglades," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?," and "Greenback Dollar" that still sound fresh today. Yet some of the humor directed toward their source material (Mexicans and rural Southerners) wouldn't pass contemporary standards of taste, while their ode to a not-very-attractive woman, "Take Her Out of Pity," is simply cringeworthy. Though the Kingston Trio were derided for their lack of authenticity, the more "credible" Peter, Paul & Mary were even more of a manufactured act, while even Bob Dylan soon ran afoul of the folk purists. Judged on its musical merits, the best of the Kingston Trio still sounds pretty good. --Don McLeese

Great songs, great arrangements and great performers -- what's not to love!?.......2006-12-08
I am a new fan to the Kingston Trio, but loved this CD set so much I felt compelled to write my first Amazon review ever. Although I didn't grow up listening to them, I did grow up listening to their music without realizing it. So many songs I've liked over the years turned out to be their songs at one time or another.
After stumbling onto a PBS special on them I immediately fell in love - with their style, their rhythm, their harmonies, their incredible energy, their musical arrangements and the sense of fun they conveyed in their performances. The local PBS station was in the middle of a pledge drive and I immediately called up and pledged the right amount to get the various Kingston Trio CD's and DVD's they were using to bribe us to contribute.
This particular CD set is by far my favorite of the two we received. I've had the two discs permanently in my car disc changer for well over a month now and haven't gotten tired of listening to them. The energy and sense of fun so evident while watching them on TV somehow came through even while just listening to them on CD.
Most of their songs just grabbed me from the beginning and I couldn't stop humming them - especially Early in the Mornin', Reuben James, Buddy Better Get On Down the Line, Desert Pete (which is inspiring, hilarious and toe-tapping all at the same time!), El Matador and Reverend Mr. Black. In addition are old familiar favorites that I'd heard others sing (e.g. Sloop John B, that I knew from The Beach Boys). I now know many of them by heart and can't help singing along while in the car. I only wish I'd "discovered" them sooner.
Excellent overview of the overlooked musical giants.......2006-11-10
It's about time "The Kingston Trio" got the attention and respect that they deserve. Not only were they aruguably the most influential act in musical history, they were also one of the most successful. At one point, the group had 4 albums in the Top Ten simultaneously, a feat that even The Beatles failed to accomplish. In addition to being a great album band, they were a great singles band as well. "Tom Dooley", "MTA", "Greenback Dollar", "Tijuana Jail", "A Worried Man" and countless others were MONSTER sellers.
I feel that their place in musical history has been ill-served by their record company, Capitol Records, a company that was arguably built on the success of the Kingston Trio. The company is as "corporate" as they come. They have no sense of music history. They are only interested in what can make them a ton of money in the here and now.
The Beatles catalogue is a case in point. They have refused to remaster the UK catalogue and give Beatles fans their first four albums in Stereo. I guess that project would not be "commercial" enough for their tastes.
Similarly, they have only released the first two Trio albums as a "TwoFer", further denigrating this band's status as the world-beating ground-breakers that they were. The only reason we have the Trio's albums are on CD is that Collector's Choice and Bear Familiy licensed them from Capitol!
The label that made so much money on The Kingston Trio in the late 50's and early 60's won't even release their albums on CD! The company clearly has no understanding of musical history and pays no respect to its stellar roster of artists. If they can't treat The Beatles with respect, how can we expect them to treat the Kingston Trio with respect?
At any rate, the whole British Invasion folk/rock thing was caused by the folk boom started by the Kingston Trio in the late fifties. After all, the Beatles were originally a "skiffle" band--skiffle bands turned up all over England in the wake of the American folk boom.
When the Americans responded to the "British Invasion", the first responders were all folk artists influenced by the Kingston Trio. The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Mamas and the Papas, Lovin' Spoonful, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were all transplanted "folkies", born and bred in the musical millieu created by the Kingston Trio.
And, of course, Bob Dylan. He, too, followed in the Trio's footsteps. He cites them directly in his autobiography. Groups popped up all over the place emulating the Kingston Trio, much as British bands popped up to in England to capitalize on the Beatles success. Peter, Paul and Mary, Ian and Sylvia, The New Christy Minstrels (with Barry McGuire and Gene Clark), the Chad Mitchell Trio (with John Denver and Roger McGuinn), the Journeymen (with John Phillips) all owe their careers to the Kingston Trio.
Even folkies Joni Mitchell and Neil Young were influenced by the Trio. They are even cited on the "Buffalo Springfield Again" album as musical influences and prime movers.
Even the Beach Boys (!), of all groups, were heavily influenced by the Kingstons.
The Kingston Trio introduced a ton of classics that have now become part of our musical vernacular. Songs such as "Wimoweh" (better known as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"), "The First Time" (made famous by Roberta Flack), "It Was a Very Good Year" (Frank Sinatra), "Sloop John B" (the Beach Boys) "Shady Grove ("Quicksilver Messenger Service") and many others were introduced to the American public by the Trio.
So, the legacy of the Kingston Trio has sadly been grossly neglected by the music industry that owes them so much. This compiliaton is a welcome addition to any music lovers collection but it will do little to change this perception.
In my view, the Trio is the "missing link" between the musical progression from Elvis to the Beatles. If Capitol Records had not been their label, I believe the Kingston Trio would be regarded as highly as those other two musical giants, as they surely deserve to be.

Album Description
Produced by the legendary Johnny Rivers himself, the 36-song, two-CD set Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006 is the most comprehensive collection of his music ever released. The anthology features 19 of his chart hits, including 15 hard-to-find tracks released on his own label. This set also features two brand-new recordings.
Johnny Rivers vaulted to worldwide fame during the height of Beatlemania, when he released a series of albums recorded at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go, all featuring hard-charging versions of rock Â'nÂ' roll standards. In the late Â'60s, he changed direction with the self-penned #1 hit, Â"Poor Side Of Town,Â" a soulful ballad that he soon followed up with another hit in a similar vein, Â"Summer Rain.Â" In the Â'70s he returned to his rockinÂ' roots and over the next 30 years released album after album of vibrant rock Â'nÂ' roll. Secret Agent Man is the definitive collection from this legendary artist.
Customer Reviews:
Johnny Rivers Rocks.......2007-05-13
I am very pleased. A very complete collection of his work. Good sound quality.
Career-spanning but not "ultimate".......2007-04-05
After years of commercial invisibility, in 1964 Johnny Rivers' energetic, unpretentious, yet solidly crafted studio-enhanced live recordings blasted onto the charts offering a refreshing, all-American alternative to the onslaught of British invasion music. After several chart successes in the "Whiskey-A-Go-Go" vein, Rivers changed musical direction and topped the charts with his self-penned "Poor Side of Town". Next came a pair of phenomenally successful covers of Motown songs, "Baby I Need Your Loving" and "Tracks of My Tears". For another ten years Rivers stretched from bluesy rock to lush balladry with two more songs making the top ten, keeping Rivers on the radar of the fickle music-buying public into the late '70's. All told, Rivers saw nearly 30 of his tunes make it into the top-100. With this legacy of music, anthologizing his recordings is no small undertaking. Two decades ago, Rhino did a respectable job with its two-disc collection that has held up over the years. Shout records now offers a new alternative in this "ultimate anthology". While this piece does delve further into Rivers' more recent recordings and offers two previously unreleased songs, it does this at a price. While most of his top-40 songs are included here, nearly a third of Rivers' charting singles are absent. Among those omissions, and though only a minor hit single, "Ashes and Sand" from 1977 continues to evade reissue on CD, somewhat surprising in that it was originally issued on Rivers' own Soul City label. While 18 tracks on a disc may seem to be generous enough, for an "anthology", ratcheting the count up to 24 would have allowed the inclusion of many of the missing singles and would have better justified the claim to being "ultimate". So, down one star for this perceived "stinginess". Otherwise, this set rates highly for the packaging, 20-page liner notes booklet and overall sound quality. Choosing between this and the Rhino one comes down to whether you're looking for more of Rivers' classic single records, in which case the Rhino set wins hands down, or the inclusion of Rivers' more contemporary work served only by this Shout/Soul City collection.
Rivers Fine Sound Rolls Over Four Decades.......2007-03-06
This is a wonderful collection from an artist who should have been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame years ago. The intelligence, energy and quiet integrity of the music of Johnny Rivers has never been clearer than on this career-spanning collection. The Hall of Fame can have the Ramones and Sex Pistols. I'll take these two discs to my desert island.
Do Yourself A Favour Get This CD.......2007-02-24
The excellent sound quality on this cd was a revelation especially when the songs date back to 1964. My previous Johnny Rivers compilation cd sounded very thin. This is not the case with "Secret Agent Man - The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006".
You forget just how many hit records Johnny Rivers had until you have them all on a cd like this. His music is very much in the feel good mode and this disc has seldom been out of my player since it arrived. If you are a Johnny Rivers fan or simply like good music this cd is highly recommended.
Ultimate Johnny Rivers.......2007-02-13
For years I have played the RINO'S JOHNNY RIVERS ANTHOLOGY 1964-1977
and I was looking to update my collection of Johnny Rivers.
This just hit the spot. The Ultimate "Secret Agent Man" is nice Clean and Clear Copies of his older song plus adds his newer songs in 1964-2006
There are songs on both collections that are not on the other one, so I will be keeping both and adding them to "Back At The Whisky" I got Johnny Rivers now covered.
