4 1/2 stars-- cooled off........2007-05-17
After the dark, claustrophobic masterpiece of "There's a Riot Goin' On" and following the departure of bassist Larry Graham, Sly Stone turned his band's attention to a bit of a cooled off sound. This could have been in response to the demise of the powerful rhythm section of Graham and drummer Gregg Errico, who had left prior to 'Riot', but I think in some ways it was a response to the overwhelming nature of its predecessor-- "There's a Riot Goin' On" is an experience to listen to, making it must have been extraordinary.
This isn't to say that "Fresh" is light pop fare. On the contrary, it's a fantastic record, dark in its own way, but it's really quite a bit less intense then its predecessor. At its best, it finds a midtempo, loping sound over which Stone can wail out full of passion and the band can form a swirl around him, single and standout "If You Want Me To Stay" is a fine example of this-- the bassline provides a graceful drive, Stone is passionate in his lead vocal, and the horns cascade around him. By and large, the album sticks to this midtempo funk, driven by the basslines and at times angular guitars ("In Time") or swanky horns ("Skin I'm In"). Stone does develop a tendency to mumble and ramble here and there ("Frisky"), but by and large the great on this one manages to blindingly overshadow the bad and Stone proves stunningly inventive, even taking a schlock Doris Day pop song and making it into a fantastic soul/gospel number ("Que Sera Sera") and survives a remake of hit "Dance to the Music" as a chilled funk number ("Keep on Dancin'", which proves to be quite engaging).
This reissue has been remastered and adds a handful of alternate mixes as bonus tracks as well as including new liner notes. The bonus tracks here are interesting-- Sly Stone had tinkered substantially with the mix on "Fresh" before settling on its released version, although at some point in its early CD release history, alternate mixes for some of the record leaked out (and were quickly recalled by the label). Some of these are actually quite superior to the original mix, illustrating significantly more space and occasionally benefitting from a lack of overdubs-- "Let Me Have it All" is the best example of this, without the layers of vocal overdubs, Sly's vocal really shines. The remastering on this is equally top notch, the record sounds great throughout.
"Fresh" is always going to be thought of as the album that followed "There's a Riot Goin' On"-- it's not quite as good as its predecessor (or as "Stand!" before that), but truthfully this came at the end of a window where Sly Stone could do no wrong. "Fresh" is a fine record in its own right. Highly recommended.
In Time Fresh Just Gets Fresher.......2007-04-14
'Fresh' is a Sly album that is always in an awkward possition because it comes as the follow up to Stand! and
There's a Riot Goin' On ,both of which are considered classics. But trying to judge any Sly & The Family Stone did in the late 60's and early 70's is like trying to debate which chocolate you like best.If you love chocolate, you love it all.One thing 'Fresh' really helps you understand about Sly Stone is that he's a slick producer. Not in the sense of over doing it but how he takes, for example the first song "In Time" with it's gritty organ/guitar sound and get it all to sound smooth as melted caramel all at the same time. The best part about that song is the use of the rhythm box beat;unlike like drumming it gives the music a very exotic, modern feel and a lot of emotion rather then sound cold and artificial.Even more interesting to note is that "Let Me Have It All","Skin I'm In' and "Keep On Dancin",something of a reprise of "Dance To The Music" from six years earlier all share the same style-deep,brooding but funky and never at a slow crawl as the music on the previous album was.On the hit "If You Want Me To Stay" the absense of Larry Graham comes to the surface as newcomer Rusty Allen takes a more timid bassline but the song itself showcases an important theme;'Fresh' is an album about Sly letting go of the past and creating a new future;Sly tells us that if we "want to him stay" he'll be around but we should let him be himself in the meantime. The same theme extends into Sly's version of "Que Sera Sera",which takes the frothy meloncaughly of the Doris Day original into pure gospel/blues passion (plus primetime drama lovers will note it was featured in an episode of 'Judging Amy').The "old" Sly & The Family Stone is best represented on "If It Were Left Up To Me" with that perky horn style of "Everyday People" and, lyrically is matches up very well with the mildly claustraphobic funk of "Babies Makin' Babies",a flat out terrific funk tune that really does the impossible;it's funky and cool at the same time, two things that seldom go together. All five of the bonus cuts being alternate takes you get to see 'Fresh' in the trial and error stages with echo plexed vocals on "Frisky" and the music on "Babies Makin' Babies" kept even further in the backround. As for this CD the remaster of 'Fresh' is excellent, especially the stereo seperation which makes the album sound more genuine then even the first CD reissue.Plus the fact you get very good liner notes that actually enhance the listening experience rather then detract from it.So as an album (if you never heard it before this) 'Fresh' lives up to it's title by being an ear catching musical experience that will draw you right into it's grooves and melodies. And even if you've already heard it a million times this will make you love it all over again.

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Like Stevie Wonder and Allen Toussaint before him--and Prince and D'Angelo afterward--Shuggie Otis was a musical visionary whose early 1970s recordings showed he could do it all, writing, arranging, performing, and producing some of the decade's most satisfying, innovative, and, unfortunately, overlooked music. This reissue of his 1974 Inspiration Information album--a soulful song cycle that took three years to create and was worth every minute--ranges from early drum machine-driven experiments like "Xl-30" and "Aht Uh Mi Hed" (note the Sly Stone spelling influence) to Otis's most stunning pop confection ever, "Strawberry Letter 23." (The latter song, which ended up being a big hit for the Brothers Johnson, is one of four bonus tracks taken from Otis's 1971 Freedom Flight album). Otis, who once turned down an offer to replace Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones, continues to perform around the Bay Area on his own and with his father, bandleader Johnny Otis. Hopefully, the long-awaited resurrection of this material will help bring him the attention he deserves. --Bill Forman
Album Description
Inspiration Information, the brainchild of guitar prodigy Shuggie Otis, more than justifies the cult following garnered in the years since its (largely ignored) 1974 release. Son of R&B legend Johnny Otis, Shuggie was a late-'60s celebrity due to his Super Session duets with Al Kooper. Opting out of arena rock -- he reputedly refused an offer to join the Rolling Stones -- the 19-year-old Otis spent three years in the studio generating this one-man opus. His multitracked rhythms recall the laid-back funk of the Meters embroidered with psychedelic filigree, and his voice resembles Allan Toussaint's. But in every other regard, this is singular, sexy music, dislocated in time. Drum machines propel "Island Letter" and the beat-box-plus-organ stabs of "XL-30" predate England's Young Marble Giants by several years. Also featured are four bonus cuts from the artist's 1971 set Freedom Flight, including "Strawberry Letter 23," which was later a hit for the Brothers Johnson. Heard here in its original form (with a surprise prog-guitar coda), the song conveys the impression of "Good Vibrations" being played by a lone musician. Unbelievably wonderful. - Billboard
Customer Reviews:
An overlooked masterpiece.......2007-05-26
This album is a work of subtlety, nuance and is best summed up by the word 'sublime'. From the soaring riffs and joyful intensity of 'inspiration information' to the introverted yet ex-corporeal spaciness of 'freedom flight', this is a thing of pure genius--not a single note is misplaced.
Let's take it back..........2007-02-22
...to real music like this here. I loved this Shuggie Otis album and I'll be buying more of his stuff. Why in the world don't you hear about people like Shuggie, a very young [at the time] musical protegé who played all of his own instruments, mixed himself and sounded like El Debarge. I'm sure had he conformed to a more commercial sound he would've been world famous. Instead he chose to march to the beat of his own drum and the benefit is the listener's. Shuggie most recently, that I know of, played guitar on Mos Def's "The New Danger" album--another one I must get ASAP! BUY THIS ALBUM!!!
Inspiration Information.......2006-04-10
WOW! BRILLIANT! GENIUS!
Those are the few words I could utter as I listened to this disc. I decided to buy this disc after a few contemporary artists that I enjoy mentioned Shuggie Otis as an inspiration to them. I had never heard of him so when I talked to a few people about whether to get this disc or his previous release - those who HAD heard of Shuggie told me to definitely get this one first. I was assured that I'd fall head over heels in love with his music and that has turned out to be true!
I was mezmerized by this entire disc - Shuggie mixes funk, pop & r&b so successfully that it was almost impossible to pick out just one or two tracks as standing out above others - THEY'RE ALL MAGNIFICENT. The info contained in the liner notes made me sad to think that the public didn't "get" this music when it was originally released but maybe a new generation of fans can help get this genius the musical recognition he deserves.
To the undecided - in agreement with the reviewer's notes, if you love Prince, Maxwell & D'Angelo, you will ADORE this disc if you give it a chance - it is MAGNIFICENT!!
Wow..........2006-03-12
This is a great compilation of songs. It is one of the few CDs that I permanently keep in my five disc CD changer. It is one of the few CDs that I can listen to 'ad nauseum' and not get tired of it.
I first heard about the reissue on NPR and I scribbled his name on a napkin that I found in the car. Coincidentally, my wife heard the same report while she was driving and also took the name down. We decided that it was fate and we bought the CD.
I don't have a favorite song on this recording. They are all brilliant. They are all magnificent. These songs may have been written and recorded in the 70s, but they have a "feel" to them that transcends the era. You can't do that with all music. You put on a KC and the Sunshine Band CD and you're in 1975-76. Put on a Police CD and you're in 1982. Put on Shuggie Otis and you're right where you need to be; fully and completely present in the new now moment.
I love this CD and I hope that you give it a chance.
Peace and Blessings.
A place between time and space..........2006-02-01
Inspiration Information is a watershed album! Not only does this album defy classification, it is arguably one of the most deviceful musical efforts in modern auditory history. It is, without doubt, one of the most creative pieces of art that I own. Otis created an alcove all his own; definitely a byproduct of free reign in the studio, as the music is all over the place, yet right where it needs to be at exactly the right moment. Inspiration Information is a hallmark example of the types of auditory beauty that emerge from creative carte blanche.
I don't care where you're musical allegiances rest, if you have a penchant for musical creativity devoid of a provincial ear...get this album. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. This is American, world, and human artistry at its best. A definite must have for the discerning listerner.

Maze Mean It With The Title!.......2007-03-22
Without any irony 'Inspiration' more then lives up to it's title because in a very highly produced and technical era of R&B and soul Maze manage to keep true to themselves by and providing listeners with their pleasing sense of rhythm and song craft, just as they do today.'Inspiration' offers a variety of tempos and styles from uptempo soul such as "Feel That You're Feelin'", and "Timin'" heavy funk with "Welcome Home" complete with JB like screams and accents and...well just that transcendant, otherworldly type of lush midtempo R&B Maze seem to always be able to get a grasp on in the beautiful two part title song, the deep "Ain't It Strange" and the mind bending "Woman Is A Wonder";wisely on every one of these songs they've kept Frankie Beverly's fine rhythm guitar and the organ interplay up fron and center.Unlike a lot of soul music desperately trying to "keep it real" against disco in the late 70s 'Inspiration' just allows Maze to be themselves and take their music to whatever heights it leads them on.
ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE FOR MAZE FANS!!.......2006-01-15
If you're a true Maze fan you already know about this CD, but strangely, many of these tracks somehow never made it to any of the various Greatest Hits compiliations floating. "Love Is Strange", Woman Is A Wonder", and especially "Timin'", are among the best things this awesome band ever did!

At some moment in their lives, church-going folk discover that "church" isn't so much about the building as it is about a frame of mind. Dr. Maya Angelou perhaps says it best introducing Church: Songs of Soul and Inspiration: "I cannot define the breadth and depth and width and height of church, but church can define me always." The rest of this entertaining collection is full of richly talented female vocalists from all styles who share how church has defined them. Jennifer Holliday ("The Wonder of You") and Patti LaBelle ("Way Up There") reveal the deep influence of gospel upon their lives, while Stephanie Mills (covering Ashford & Simpson's "Reach Out and Touch") and En Vogue (covering the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love") offer a more contemporary pop approach, as does Dionne Warwick with a redo of her timeless '70s classic "What The World Needs Now Is Love." Through it all, the object of their affection fuels the passion, spirit, and art that are woven so richly throughout church history. Ann Nesby brings it all to a focused point in her stirring and powerful "A Song for You." --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Church- very moving.......2007-01-17
When I opened and listened to the commentary CD-ROM I was very moved, and the music was very inspiring. New and old blends of gospel style hymns and popular music were well mixed and immensely enjoyable.
all the best girls go to church.......2004-07-28
Now and then an album comes along that is soooo amazing that you have to pinch yourself and tell yourself that this is for real and not a fantasy album you always dreamed of. To start there is an opening address by Maya Angelou who has a voice like a chocolate waterfall follow this with the voices of Patti Labelle, Ann Nesby, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan & Jennifer Holliday to name but a few and all sounding the best they ever have . Is that what inspiration does for you? This sounds like a collaboration that satisfied all involved. The arrangements of these classic songs are faultless and it would be impossible to bring out a best track but just for shere music tingles check out Ann Nesby's A Song For You. It really does not come any better than this
Songs that can inspire !!!!.......2003-11-25
This cd and cd rom package is a gem. Most of the songs work and most of the artist work the songs. When you buy this package, you wil find that Stephanie Mills shines on "Reach Out and Touch" and the divine Ms. Dionne Warwick sounds down-right heavenly on "What the World Needs Now". By far, these are the highlights of the cd. Patti Labelle, Ann Nesby and Patti Austin all belt out their tunes in good order. En Vogue sings smoothly and Maya Angelou speaks the spoken word only like she can!!!
This is mature music and should be listened to with a mature ear. If you are looking for a pop-oriented, anti climatic over-rated cd with overexposed and over-rated singers, this ain't the cd for you. BUY It with the expectation of good music from first class, first rate singers who are re-visiting their spiritual roots. Great cd!!
ENHANCED features.......2003-09-23
For the guy who said that his second CD was blank, try inserting it into the CD-ROM drive of your computer. It's a data-only CD (it won't play in a regular CD player), containing special interviews and videos, etc. They are especially good, adding to the soul-stirring experience you already receive from listening to the disc. Each singer discusses their background in the church, their musical influences, etc., and what spirituality has meant to them later as adults.
All the tracks are amazing, but Patti LaBelle and Ann Nesby (had never heard of Ann before) steal the show as soloists. Collectively, however, the Fire Choir's powerhouse vocals (and the gospel instrumentation of course) are the common threads that give all tracks their distinctive gospel flair. Seriously, if their rendition of "As" doesn't light your fire, your wood must be wet!
Absolutely Breath Taking.......2003-08-13
This is a tour de force! Every artist on this remarkable piece of work does a splendid job. I was especially moved by Patti LaBelle's reprisal of Way Up There and Shirley Caesar's rendition of His Eye is on the Sparrow was simply inspired. You must have this in your collection. It's a once in a lifetime compilation. EXCELLENT!!!

great.......2005-04-08
this 2 cd combo was awesome. On every song they harmonize extremely well. I really enjoyed the gospel set because on the group efforts (there are two solos (What a Friend and Pilgrims of Sorrow) by Cissy Houston and I think Swing Low is completely sung by Myrna Smith) their sound is so rich and full, they sound more like a choir than 4 singers. The songs are really interesting and really inspiring. What the world Needs Now is awesome, too. The group's version of Alfie is fantastic and so is just about every other song on the cd.

AT THEIR PRIME.......2003-09-20
Hailed as one of the greatest ensemble groups in R&B history THE SWEET INSPIRATIONS (CISSY HOUSTON, ESTELLE BROWN, MYRNA SMITH, AND SYLVIA SHEMWELL) were not as big as they should have been in terms of popularity. Compared to album sales for MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS, THE SUPREMES or THE RONNETTES they were not at the top. But with one listen you become aware that they were by far more talented and polished. The main reason could be that ATLANTIC records employed them as session vocalists for every big act or solo performer at that time. If one markets their album really well maybe they are not available to perform on everyone else's record? (Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Esther Phillips, Wilson Pickett)
Be that as it may that didnt stop them from releasing some stellar soul music. This release just issued on cd in 2002 catches a gospel and pop/r&b recording.
On the gospel set(SONGS OF FAITH AND INSPIRATION)Cissy Houston (mother of WHITNEY) writes half of the tunes. The hand clapping, toe tapping "Looking on the brightside" is pure traditional gospel and inspiring. Estelle takes the lead on the accapella "He'll fight". A true testament of THE SWEET's vocal power and harmony. Other standouts are "The 23rd psalm" and Cissy's solo reading of "Pilgrim of Sorrow".
The second part of the cd brings you to the pop/r&b side with "WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE". The title track is slammed from beginning to end with the vocal power and mesmorizing harmonies this group can provide. One of the best versions of the great song ever! Their version of "Alfie" clearly overshadows Dionne Warwick's version. The whole release is consistent with first class production and special readings of classics by THE BEE GEES ("To love somebody") and even OTIS REDDING ("Thats how strong my love is"). The original "You really didnt mean it" is pure soul balladry as Cissy again takes lead on a song about a love that wasnt meant to be.
One of soul music's institutional groups deserves better recognition then they got when they were together. A great pairing of two good releases. Pick it up and enjoy. There is so much to savor!

Nice 1st project.......2003-03-24
I was slow to buy this project. I still haven't bought the project, but after listening to it I probably will. I took the pleasure of borrowing my sister's CD and I liked most of what I heard. For those reviewers who wonder why the album is more urban than traditional, she's on a label that would rather push their artists to sing urban contemporary than put money behind them to push the ARTIST. Have you heard of any Lejuene Thompson tours, or Beverly Crawford tours, or Shirley Murdock tours, or Darwin Hobbs tours for that matter? No, neither have I. Look at all the gospel artists that EMI has signed. They all sing the same style of music, even though they are different people with different style. I was talking with a friend and he basically told me that this label-which is a relatively new label- does not want to put money forth to fund a tour for their artists. They just simply tell them to record a "contemporary" album and that will help the album sell, because I guess that's all the rage now. It must not be because when you look at the aforementioned artist's reviews no artists except for Lejeune has more than 5 reviews posted. Anyway, I expected more traditional arrangements and more live instruments and was disappointed when I did not get it. However, I think the CD overall was a good initial solo project. I think Ced did a great job in production work and I think Lejeune's voice is wonderful. On the other hand, I think Lejeune's vocal skills were severely limited by the choice of music, but to say she needs to get with someone to improve her vocal prowess is a little misguided. Most of the songs on this album do not allow for her to sing the way I've always heard her sing in the past- which was squalling, growling, and out of this world riffs. She's Karen Clark Sheard with a lower voice. She still does a good job blending her voice with the particular music style chosen. I understand that she has to conform a little bit to best fit the musical track. Sometimes you just can't do all of that growling and stuff. I was also surprised that her voice stayed low pretty much throughout the whole project. Vocally, Lejeune is more than capable of doing better than this project. This is still a good project, however. It makes me wonder why it was not pushed more in the beginning. I pray that Lejeune gets on a record label that knows how to push a gospel artist and lets the artist be himself/herself. Lejeune and Ced I love you guys, but sign another deal with another company. Be Blessed
Don't Understand the Problem.......2003-02-05
I don't understand the negative reviews I've read concerning this project. I bought this CD on first glance because I loved her work with Tri-City. I popped in the CD and the first cut had me going. Then it was appropriately followed by three more SLAMMING tunes. I actually performed "Born Again" at an impromptu worhsip service and the congregation was blessed. LeJuene, I love ya and would recommend this CD to all, like I've been doing anyway. Every artist does not have a "hollerin'" voice. That's not LeJuene. She's coming into her own and I think this CD is one that causes the listener to take inventory over their own life. Her subtle approach to this project I believe was intentional. Kudos to trying something new. I enjoyed every minute of it.
BUY THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-01-12
Believe me, you will not be disappointed! The girl is talented, and I have always admired her as a gifted artist. The remix of The Clark Sisters', "You Brought the Sunshine", is out of this world. If you want to enjoy a beautiful cd that serves its purpose of uplifting the name of Jesus-purchase this music. We all know that a lot of gospel music we here today is really "inspirational." LeJuene has not forgotten her roots and continues to use her talent for God's divine purpose.
As I mentioned before, I've always admired her. We use to attend the same church in Fayetteville, NC, and as a young girl I was completely amazed at the annoited voice she has been blessed with.
Congratulations LeJuene! I also want to congratulate you on the compliment you received in the magazine,"Sister to Sister"-I think it was released in July 2002's issue. GO GIRL!! Can't wait for the next album to drop!
Lackluster.......2002-10-13
I thought this project was...ok; definitely a good first project but vocally I wish LeJuene was more aggressive. She has a beautiful voice no doubt but she doesn't take enough vocal "risks"; she stays pretty much in one area. I think that she really needs to sing with someone that will push her out of her comfort zone. Case and point, if you're at all familiar with secular artists, take Faith Evans, for instance. She was pretty good at first but once she sang with Karen Clark-Sheard, that made all the difference. She sounds totally different now. When you sing with powerhouses like Karen Clark-Sheard, you have no choice but to "show and prove". I just pray that LeJeune is afforded the same opportunity. I believe it'll make all the difference in the world. Be BLESSED, LeJuene!
Anticlimax.......2002-07-03
I am a Tri-City fan, and especially fond of a few lead singers - Lejuene being one of them. I was so excited when I heard she had a new cd out, I could hardly wait to tear the wrapping and listen to what i knew would be comparable to Kim Burrell and Karen Clark-Sheard's projects, but it wasn't. I was sooooo disappointed, because I know this sister loves God, and has been blessed with a truly powerful, phenomenal voice. I mean, she can really sing. Forreal. But it wasn't evident throughout most of the cd. With her husband's backing and Donald's blessing, they could have done much better. She fell prey to this recent trend in gospel music when talented artists tread the r&b, hip-hop, and yet i'm still saved line. It was way too much and far too little; not enough traditional where her anointing could really flow. Sorry, Lejuene. I still love you and will buy your next cd (after a sampling, of course). But the one I have now is collecting dust...

No matter how many hundreds of incarnations they've taken on--from the Righteous Brothers to the Ramones--Barry Mann's songs combine solid craftsmanship with, at their best, irresistible magic that has ensured a permanent spot in the American Songbook. Soul & Inspiration gives us a chance to hear these classics from the horse's mouth, along with help from such friends as Carole King, Bryan Adams, and Peabo Bryson in harmony vocals. Actually, given the unaffected honesty of Mann's vocal delivery, it might have been preferable to keep the production bare bones, with just the voices and the songwriter's vivid piano accompaniments. Kitschy effects occasionally intrude into producer Fred Mollin's textures, though there are also some inspired touches, such as the sitar on "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." But as Mann pours himself into each song, it's a treat to imagine what it must have felt like the first time this cornerstone of the Brill Building triumphed over formula, knocking out a brilliant bridge here or an unforgettable turn there, all resulting in something that can only now sound inevitable in retrospect. --Thomas May

Barry Mann - One of the Top Talents in The Music Industry.......2002-01-16
Barry Mann has done it again! He is not only a talented song writer, but sings the songs in "Soul and Inspiration" in a way that touches your heart and brings back fond memories of the good old days! I absolutely love this album, and can't stop playing it. If you love old Rock 'n Roll, this cd is a "must have"!
I knew Barry Mann when he was young and starting out in the music industry, while growing up in Brooklyn. He was the nicest guy you ever met then, and was just as friendly and down-to-earth when I met him years later at The Bottom Line in the Village. He was there to watch a show which was based on his music. I saw the show twice, and both times the audience gave it a standing ovation. I'd love to see that show's score made into a cd. Anyway, rave reviews for "Soul and Inspiration" from a true fan. Go out and buy it - you won't be disappointed!
Too Funky 4 a Diamond, Emeralds of Rock & Roll.......2000-05-26
Barry Mann has written some true classics; and it's marvelous to hear his less-than-perfect but highly emotional renditions of music he wrote. This album starts with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." Most will know the Righteous Brothers' hit version, but it has also been done by woman and man with Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood and Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. Here Barry teams with Carole King. The call & response vocals build and the harmony vocals soar as they knock this through the roof. In a perfect world, this would top the Adult Contemporary charts! The CD would be worth the price for this track alone, but there's more. "On Broadway" shines. "Don't Know Much" which Linda Ronstadt did so effectively on her 1989 "Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind" CD is powerful. Teaming with Bryan Adams, Mann sings passionately with that pounding piano on the Animals' hit & Vietnam era theme song, "We Gotta Get Out this Place." "Soul & Inspiration" surges with Daryl Hall on harmony. Although I'd prefer Tina Turner's 1978 version of "Sometimes When We Touch" to this or Dan Hill, it's a sweet song that dodges schlock-rock. It's nice to hear J.D. Souther back on "I Just Can't Help Believin'," even if he's mixed low. Another great moment is when Mann teams with Peabo Bryson on "Just Once." The track should be a required text for soulful singing. Leah Kunkel really adds great strength to "Here You Come Again" which we're used to hearing by Dolly Parton. The album ends with the beautiful "Somewhere Out There." As pretty as it is, I'd have preferred if he'd ended with a rocker like "Kicks" which was #4 for Paul Revere & the Raiders. Being the first hit with an anti-drug message, this song was a milestone still relevant today. I'm sad it was passed over. Small complaint. This is an excellent addition to the legacy of the 60's. Now Mann's voice sells the songs he wrote.
oldies written by the MANN.......2000-02-18
long known for his collaboration with former wife cynthia weil (leader of the Pack) mann joins up with some great singer-songwriters for his definitive version of his own songs. the result? baby boomer heaven!

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction to both the life and the work.......2001-08-10
Not having known very much at all about Chopin, I cannot vouch for the accuracy in the Naxos entry in their CD and cassette Biography series; but I can vouch for the enjoyment
(NA 421912) afforded me.
Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.
His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).
My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.
