This Ron Howard film parlays the troubled story of Nobel laureate John Forbes Nash Jr., a gifted Princeton mathematics professor tormented for decades by paranoid schizophrenia, into something considerably richer than typical Hollywood triumph-against-all-odds fare. Howard has teamed here again with frequent collaborator James Horner, and it's the composer who deftly shades the film's difficult emotional landscape and helps impart a compelling humanity. Horner's first task is not inconsiderable: musically portraying the arcane realm of mathematical theorems that are the story's backdrop. In doing so, the composer leans heavily on modern minimalist technique, bright flourishes that recur briefly throughout an orchestral score that increasingly reflects Nash's bleak inner landscape in its quietly somber and brooding tones. And while Horner has frequently been accused of excessively repeating himself in his scores, the neo-minimalist gambit employed on this reflectively pastoral, postmodernist soundscape neatly nips such criticism in the bud. Nash's triumph is ultimately an intensely personal one, well reflected in Welsh soprano Charlotte Church's lilting performance of the Horner/Will Jennings ballad "All Love Can Be." This enhanced CD also features notes by the director and composer, as well as exclusive photos and the film's trailer. --Jerry McCulley

As other reviewers will tell you yes this is another Horner machine made soundtrack. But it still sounds good! If you are a Horner fan by all means buy it otherwise "at your own risk"!

And another thing that gets me is no one even bothered to mention "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World" I happened to like this one this is the song that plays when he is in the hospital.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful score.......2007-02-09

James Horner's soundtrack for A BEAUTIFUL MIND is as psychologically intense as the film it so effectively embellishes.

Charlotte Church provides an appropriately eerie and largely non-verbal soprano to this remarkable motion picture score, yet one that would seem only quirky were it not so beautifully embedded in a musical stream that draws one inexorably and almost vicariously into the emotional turbulence of the Princeton mathematician John Nash.

There is an angelic nature to the shape and texture of this music, one that is able to turn demonic as the story line requires. Both by brilliance and by dementia, Nash seems the object of external forces, rising with supreme heroism (at least in the film's version of events) to conquer. The music is there at each score, coaxing the viewer into empathic solidarity with this deeply troubled man and his long-suffering and preternaturally beautiful wife.

This is mood music of the deeply engaging variety. Its lush tonal landscape is achieved under the baton of the composer himself. The score's vast range of volume and expression would certainly have made it a joy to watch in performance.

Alas, we don't have that.

But we have this.

An ethereal, compelling, even gripping tone poem. Buy it.

Absolutely gorgeous - my husband keeps it in his car and listens to it whenever he's driving.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, lovely, majestic.......2006-04-04

The sound track for "A Beautiful Mind" stayed with me long after the movie. The CD has all the themes that made the movie so emotionally powerfull. James Horner, composer and conductor, perfectly matches the excitement of genius and the terror of mental disability. Charlotte Church's clear and gentle voice compliments the music and used instrumentally creates a haunting refrain. I loved the movie and this music is wonderful.

This is one of the darkest and most emotional soundtrack, and yet it is filled with more inspiring songs.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Banshees with Keyboards...........2007-05-18

Very unusual album at the time, unusual now, and unusual for the band, This was departure away from punk towards a new direction,a creepy Alice in Wonderland feel to the album. Psychedelic and dark, but not ugly or hard to listen too. Two BIG singles for the band, "Happy House" and "Christine", but the whole album is worth a complete listen all the way through. I LOVE "Red Light" (an underground anthem, then and even today) and "Desert Kisses" is a great overlooked track, so even if this isn't your favorite Siouxsie, you will definatly hear sounds that became a standard sound for the band on this album.

5 out of 5 stars An Unbelievably Creative Album.......2007-05-03

Had it not been for "Kaleidoscope", Siouxsie and the Banshees probably wouldn't have made it past their second album. Two of their band members, guitarist John McKay and drummer Kenny Morris, deserted the band unexpectdedly and the Banshees were nearly destroyed. The band soldiered on anyway with fantastic new drummer and guitarist Budgie and John McGeoch. This makes "Kaleidoscope" Siouxsie and the Banshees's most important album. It's also their best because of how it showed that the Banshees were more than willing to try new things. Instead of the post-punk gloominess that surrounded their first albums, "Kaleidoscope" has a variety of sonic textures, from the light-hearted electronic/goth pop of songs like their classic single "Happy House" to the Middle Eastern exotica of songs like the stunning "Desert Kisses". "Christine" is the strongest song on the album and quite possibly my favorite Banshees song of all time, with its lush-sounding acoustic guitar and heady psychedelia. Their are nods to the fire and fury of their previous songs with tracks like the terrifying "Skin", my second favorite track after "Christine". In short, if you are a fan of experimental, creative music, you should buy "Kaleidoscope".

5 out of 5 stars Marvelously Unique Album.......2006-08-08

I would definitely recommend this album for first time SATB listeners or anyone who is not familiar with the band. Its fabulous mix of catchy tunes and unique melodies make this album stand out among the others. In my opinion, Christine, Happy House, Red Light, and Desert Kisses are the better songs on the album. There really are no mediocre 'filler' songs on this album (even if you're not a fan)...each one is just as great as the next, from start to finish. You won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars damn.......2006-02-03

punk / gothic

it took me about... a day to delve into the album
but about a week for all the songs to catch and transfer themselves into my head
at first i thought it was a bit boring
but i was so so wrong

01. Happy House
one of the more famous tracks from this album. mega catchy tune. the drumming really brings it out along with the high pitched synths. quite sinister but not dark. a punky, up-beat song.
not a fave on this album it's no doubt an awesome track.
8/10

02. Tenant
starts with a high pitched synth cry and a spiky synth beat. very creepy. quite a spine-tingling tune. this song actually made me jump when i was listening to it in bed. when she sings about how "the painters crash" deep background synths slide in in, spooky stuff!!
8.5/10

03. Trophy
it took me a while to get into this track but it's a typical dark siouxsie tune. when you do get into it it becomes mega catchy. her voice is sorta drugged and sleepy which works
7/10

04. Hybrid
i love the drum beat but i really can't get into this track. shame it's the longest too. it just gets sorta... boring
5.5/10

05. Clockface
i LOVE this track. it's the shortest on the album but it's so catchy even though it contains no lyics. just a clever series of "OH!" and "A-WAO-WAO!!". an up-beat, punkish charger. i love it
10/10

06. Lunar Camel
a very gloomy electro song with a gothic-arabesque sound and a trip-hop feel. no guitars here at all but it's awsome. a slower song with naive and sweet vocals. the first song i got into on this album. very melancholy
10/10

07. Christine
an amazing song about a girl with split personalities. a dark matter and a melancholy feel about it but it's quite up-beat and it has quite a charming feel to it. a siouxsie classic. "now she's in purple, now she's a turtle"
10/10

08. Desert Kisses
maybe my favourite track. another one that takes time to get into. it has a very hot feel to it, scorching, like a desert. the guitars sound very middle-eastern. i love the lyrics. i even wrote them on my college bag. the bit about cursing into the ocean. the song's an epic. siouxsie belts it out one minute and soothes it out the next. way too catchy. i could listen to this for hours
10/10

09. Red Light
a moody electronic stomper about "kodak-whores". sounds quite modern. a catch track, highlighted by the high pitched photographic sfx and the flickering of siouxsie's words where the first sound from her tongue echoes and doubles over itself. it gets really good at about 2 minutes where the beat clashes and starts echoing, tripling itself and bubbling over itself, echoing, making the song dance around your headphones
8.5/10

10. Paradise Place
this took me a long long time to get into. another arabesque-stylee one. i think it's about plastic surgery?? the bass is EXTREMELY catchy when she goes "lo-do-do-dodo".
9/10

11. Skin
okay, my favourite, tied with 'Desert Kisses'. this is some furiously twisted stuff. wouldn't seem out of place if it was in THE SCREAM. it's a very insane, high tempo, scary song. i think it's about a woman who gets so obsessed with animal fur she starts to wear human skin. dunno, someone correct me?
i like the twisted side of siouxsie. i reckon her most demented lyrics are deffo 'Carcass', this, and 'Head Cut'
10/10

whatever
it's an amazing album
get!
i reccommend, for beginners
first buy...
the scream
then this

my fave albums, tied, have got to be this, the scream, juju and peepshow.
i can't get into the much-loved tinderbox :( help!!

TAKE CARE!!

I bought this album when I was just a whisp of a girl. It haunts me still and she continues even after I've sprouted all the girlish curves, had my first kiss, etc. to blow my mind.

First heard trying to calm Ol' Dirty Bastard on "Got Your Money" from his Nigga Please, 20-year-old Kelis now appears with her own album. Multi-threat production team the Neptunes turn the aptly named Kaleidoscope into the same kind of playground they provided for ODB, and even singing the masterminds' songs, Kelis quickly establishes it as her own hip-hop-wise R&B turf. Already gaining attention for the ranting "Caught Out There" ("I hate you so much right now!"), the disc proves this unique singer equally as convincing in other complex moods, such as a comic take on romantic pain ("Game Show") and an offbeat memory of childhood ("Roller Rink"). More playful than Mary J. Blige, Kelis makes as strong a first impression--and, like Blige, shows every sign of sticking around. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars "Kaleidoscope" Being Underrated Is An Understatement In Its Own Self! 5 STARS!.......2006-09-01

It took me a while to adjust to Kelis' debut album "Kaleidoscope", but in the end, its eclecticism and quirky catchiness won me over. What surprises me more than anything, however, is how she's failed to consistently maintain commercial presence, and how she's so similar, yet so different, to Beyonce.

After all, Beyonce's vocals are usually more about power than about emotion; Kelis' tempered vocals are usually the other way round. Beyonce's a conniving spotlight hog (albeit a talented, seemingly humbled one); Kelis has no trouble letting go of it, as displayed through her lack of consistent commercial presence. Beyonce seems more content with keeping her music safe to a certain degree; Kelis seems determined to break boundaries & hit listeners with something they've never heard before. When Beyonce feels willing to show some skin, it seems entirely for the sake of sex appeal; when Kelis sheds her clothes, it's so she can smother herself in layers and shades of symbolic paint and make a statement towards some level of artistic creativity.

Compare this magnificent album with Beyonce's wonderful debut, "Dangerously In Love", and all of my comparisons between the two should stand justified. Produced entirely by The Neptunes, "Kaleidoscope" lives up to both its title & confusing album cover - a colourful, insightful, raw, eclectic collection of out-of-this-world R&B. The intergalactically peculiar intro about Pharrell Williams discovering "a special little girl" on another planet gives listeners a little taste of what's about to come. And indeed, there are plenty of highlights to follow.

The album's best track goes to lead single "Caught Out There" an emotional ballad where Kelis catches her unfaithful lover out, even going as far as psychotically, albeit comically and emotionally, screaming "I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!" at the top of her minimally studio-enhanced lungs in the chorus. Swirling synthesizers, simplistic guitar strings and strong lyrics (and sometimes creepy - "Held you when you were sick/Even s*cked your d***") continue to maintain the song's emotional frustration.

As a matter of fact, there's no shortage of weirdness displayed through the aforementioned album standout. Whether it's Kelis comparing her love towards an anonymous criminal to the mafia (the dark-toned ballad "Mafia"), comparing her relationship to an actual game (the cleverly childish "Game Show"), inspiring children in the ghetto (the lyrically profound "Ghetto Children"), seeking attention from a man who's sick of attention-desperate women "(Good Stuff", featuring rapper The Clipse), sacrificing everything she has to make a relationship work (the moving ballad "Get Along With You") OR GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE, everything on this album works marvellously, and still sounds refreshing after 7 long years. Perhaps "Roller Rink" would be one of the album's lesser tracks, but even that song is enjoyable to some degree, despite the fact that today's youth usually release their frustration through fights, verbal abuse & drunken parties thrown behind your parents' backs :P.

Thankfully, "Kaleidoscope" is a much-need breath of fresh air, and also a good starting point for those of you interested in the older, more refreshing production work of now-legendary producers The Neptunes. Guest artists, including the aforementioned rappers The Clipse & background speaking from Pharrell Williams, also keep this album interesting. 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars One of a Kind.......2006-08-23

This is the album that introduced the world to Kelis. Her ecletic style has been copied by Gwen Stefani, Pink, Nelly Furtado, Fergie and countless others. Kelis has always managed to stay one step ahead of the game. This debut was unlike anything any female esp. in 1999 would dare put out. While the Neptunes and Kelis has parted ways as of 2004, this is an excellent album for those post Neptunes fans. Kelis is as angry as any black woman scorned on lead single, "Caught Out There" famous for the line "I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!" She's contemplative about a fading relationship in "Get Along With You." She compares her love to that of a "Mafia" and so on. Nice album with pulsating beats mixed with Kelis' smooth and sometimes distraught vocals make for one of the most overlooked albums of 1999. It makes me wish I would of picked it up a lot sooner.

4 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscope .......2006-07-16

I love Kelis' approach to her music - she refuses to be classified as just another "r&b chick" and from this disc to her upcoming release, always pushes the boundaries which creates some interesting music indeed! I was intrigued enough by the single, CAUGHT OUT THERE that I took a chance and bought the entire disc which as a whole, did not disappoint.

Kelis is not a powerhouse vocalist but she uses her throaty lower register to her advantage throughout the disc, doesn't manufacture runs up and down the vocal scale and didn't reach for notes that are out of her range. It's also interesting to note that this is the project that drew so much attention to the Neptunes since Kelis was Pharrell's muse during the production of the album. It's also cool to reference this album as the starting point for the Neptunes "sound" when you listen to other tracks they subsequently produced for other artists.

I would strongly recommend this dics to fans of unconventional singers & of the Neptunes because even the 2 songs I felt were filler tracks, sound great because of the beats used.

My favorite tracks are:

GET ALONG WITH YOU (also featured a very inventive video treatment that perfectly matched the sentiment of the song);

CAUGHT OUT THERE

GOOD STUFF - great beats!!, catchy single where her vocals really shine;

GAME SHOW - cute production with the game show theme music as the backdrop

ROLLER RINK - love the chorus & again the beats are excellent

MAFIA & WOULDN'T YOU AGREE - I found both to be very stylized but enjoyable songs that worked because of the music production moreso than Kelis' vocals

The flow of the album is really good too - each song has its own individuality without lulling the listener into boredom and as I mentioned earlier, even the filler tracks are interesting to listen to for the excellent beats produced by the Neptunes.

Overall, this is a strong debut from a young woman who has a definite point of view and shows off that individuality in her image as well as in her music. I'd highly recommend it to those who are curious about Kelis'/Neptunes' beginnings.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Debut!.......2006-03-13

This album was a very unique sound that made everyone listen and respect Kelis as an artist......But one song just truly annoys me...Game Show....Overall, the album is good.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the typical "pop" ular music fans........2006-01-14

This album is a classic. It is not for those who are in love with "pop"ular music. It is not a staus quo type of album. Hell, Kelis is not a standard pop artist. This album is witty, different, yet still has great beats that you can dance to. But also, has some interesting word play and choices that rival the somestimes standard trival lyrics of R&B and Pop.
*****************************
Great choice if you want to step outside the box from traditional R&B and Pop. Yet, you still want to dance and have fun.

4 out of 5 stars great uk style psyche pop ala early floyd.......2007-01-07

Ive been recently hunting down all the long lost 60s psyche albums from both sides of the ocean and stumbled upon this. Kaleidoscope's debut is heavily debted to Syd Barrett in both lyrical and musical sense but in many ways theres a more orchestrated approach here that makes this stand on its own rather well. Sometimes theres a hint of very early Bee Gees and the Byrds. Bonus tracks and great liner notes fill this cardboard flipcase remaster- and if youre a fan of any summer of love or LSD fueled recording this is a must own- out of the original tracks almost all are great- nice vocal harmonies quirky story telling and interesting arrangements. Ofcourse it has all the trappings of psychedelia- the effected vocals- chimy organs and guitars and sound effects but again the songs are memorable. In fact i would put this in my top ten of psyche recordings along with piper-sf sorrow-pet sounds-sgt peppers- forever changes and others.

5 out of 5 stars Tangerine Dream - ( Band = Kaleidoscope from UK).......2006-08-23

Just a clarification - The Album is listed as a CD Single which may suggest (as it did to me) that there are only a couple of songs on it - This is not the case.
As the original description page correctly indicates - there are 11 Tracks to the Album and a further 6 bonus tracks, making 17 tracks in all.
The quality is good and takes me right back to the days when I had the Vinyl Record Album (which I still have somewhere).
Another confusion I'm happy that the original write up clarifies - The Band's name is Kaleidoscope, a 60's British Band and the Album's title is Tangerine Dream (not the other way round as some of us always thought).
For my Money, worth the $$.

This was my first CD on SOS. There is excellence in everything about it, you can find bacharac and "onda nueva" rhythyms all together. This is a cd for background conversation music, crusing in the highway or just having a good wine while savouring the fine things in life.

This is a very good CD. I am basically a Jazz fan but this pop CD is good listening. I like the Jazzy instrumental and improvisation despite the fact that it is classified as a Pop. Some reviewers compared this music to Burt Bachcarat and other Cool pop era music. I can understand the comparison. However, I would rather like Duke Ellington's remark on music which he said, "there are only two kinds of music, good music and bad music". To me, this is good music. When I listen to this CD, it reminds of the days when I did my jogging on the beach at Rio de Janeiro, to be more exact, along Avenida Alantica at 2am. The beach was quiet, pitch black, the air was humid and warm with a sense of eroticism filled the air and I was alone running from Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema then Leblon. So, this music is just like that, a sense of erotic romanticism, fast pace, a sense of up tempo and it is overall warm.

COLORS THAT DIFFUSE, BRIGHTEN AND SWAY.CRISP BREEZES.SWOONING MELODIES. REFRESHING PHRASING AND ORCHESTRATION. A PURE VELVET TOUCH HERE.
CONNELL AND DREWERY turn up creative juices and change gears. this album celebrates two constants in their career which started with this recording.1a. never repeat the same thing.2b. show the world our range.
there is a tremendous nod to the 60's pop engine here but more over it has a opening movie score feel.TO BE MORE SPECIFIC it is the brainchild of SOMEWHERE DEEP IN THE NIGHT, but more in the birth stage.
to me it holds itS own head held high with nostalgia to be sure but heartfelt and completely filler free of the trappings of what was on the radio at the time in the late 80's or what is on the radio now. for all that matters.
when this album came out i swooped it up immediatley because i never knew if the band would make any more music. lucky for those of us longtime fans and music enthusiates they continue to this day.
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE LUSH, FLUID FEEL SWING OUT SISTER.

4 out of 5 stars More lush, dreamy jazz-pop from SOS.......2004-03-02

With British jazz-pop group Swing Out Sister's 1989 followup to It's Better To Travel, Kaleidoscope World might as well be titled It's Better Than It's Better To Travel, because it is. Orchestral and string arrangements abound in their glory, making more full the usual brass section, and the songs are just as dreamy and upbeat, and maintain a consistency in sound. And all that despite having the same producer save the group-produced "Coney Island Man."

The full-bodied brass ensemble in "You On My Mind" kind of makes it the opening theme song to so many movies in the 1960's, or something that Dusty Springfield would do. Backing vocalists are introduced here too. Whoever thought not getting over someone could be so cheerful?

"Where In The World" is more lush, but with the same pronounced brass sections, with some pop-like sections when the backing vocalists come in.

The slow-dancing and dreamy "Forever Blue" is one of two songs using a full orchestra. Despite its dreamy tone, the words tell a different nature, urging a girlfriend that hopeless wishing won't restore her guy. The other song is "Precious Words," something that could've doubled for a mid-paced 70's disco song. The title is all that's left in another song yielding an empty world: "Loneliness says so much more/than a thousand words ever said/conversations pass me by/I'm left with silence instead." Instrumental versions of both are included.

When Corrine sings in a slightly lower register in "Heart For Hire," similarities to Sade can be detected, although Corrine's voice is smoky but higher in pitch. Another mid-paced Dusty-like song. The title refers to what the protagonist will be when the lying louse leaves her.

"Waiting Game" has a tempered Stock-Aitken-Waterman sound, with string and brass arrangements flirting with 70's-style disco. Put it another way, Dusty and the Pet Shop Boys would want to do this and put it on Dusty's Reputation album.

"Masquerade" is a moody piece where similarities to Sade can be heard when Corrine's voice is long and drawn out. This song too has an instrumental version included.

"Between Strangers" could've belonged on their previous album, what with the bass keys that can be heard.

"The Kaleidoscope Affair" is not the theme to a 60's spy movie, but this instrumental, with Corrine merely vocalizing, might as well be for such a hypothetical movie. "Coney Island Man" is another instrumental, upbeat with more vocalizing by Corrine, and sounding a lot like Basia.

A mixture of songs buoyed by energetic strings and horns, with Corrine Drewery's voice used to better effect than it was in the previous album, and a sound that occasional veers into 70's disco territory and 60's Dusty Springfield regions, Swing Out Sister's Kaleidoscope World is a world for the dreamer, but at times, with advice that the dreamer should wake up.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-05-10

To say that I love this disc would be an understatement. I have probably listened to it 500 times. To comment on just a few of the tracks...
The "Praeludium and Allegro" is definitely the best recording anyone (except maybe Kreisler!) has ever done. The praeludium, which is almost all quarter notes, is often just blindly sawed out. Midori treats each note individually. The allegro is also nice - not rushed at all. The staggeringly difficult Skryabin-Szigeti "Etude in Thirds" tossed off with impeccable technique and spotless intonation. Sarasate's "Habanera" sparkles with a decisive 'Spanish' flavor. Elgar's "Chanson de Matin" is just plain beautiful. Also nice are inclusions of some numbers not heard hardly ever, including Bacewicz's "Oberek #2" mazurka and the Shostakovich preludes. Robert McDonald, definitely one of the best, is the able pianist for all the numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Even for a trained jazz musician who thinks classical artists are overhyped, this stands out as one of the best albums........2007-04-11

Let's be honest--any kid with a violin who ever set foot in a conservatory thinks (s)he's a prodigy, the next Mehta or Yo Yo Ma, while they play the same old tired music everyone else plays, exactly as the greats play it, with hardly a shred of originality that doesn't arise out of an inability to replicate the 'masters' as well as their CD players (and that goes for jazz musicians too, but they don't get as snobby about it). The musicians who are truly great don't have any sort of attitude about their playing or their music--they just play, and they play anything, and it's great.

Midori has been one such great artist from early on. She simply had the knack. You would still want to listen to her if she was half as skilled. Every decent musician practices assiduously, seeks out the best people to learn from, makes sacrifices in life just for the chance to play for a living (even weddings and strip clubs if need be), but few have 'the knack.'

I don't know if Midori has a similar story, nor does it really matter in terms of actually making music. I know her parents moved from Osaka to the States with her when she was about ten just so she could pursue her potential--as all great students have great parents. I'm sure she didn't just pop out of the womb playing violin. But, like I wrote above, she's got the knack that you can't get through practice or training. She's just plain great.

Yes, I'm bored by classical music in general. I like 'good' music regardless of style though, and this album is so far beyond good that it belongs in whatever collection of immortal artist you may have--say: Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Shaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and--even if you have no other classical music in your collection--Midori.

Midori produces some amazing sounds out of her violin!
You cant go wrong with Encore! Shes brilliant.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening.......2005-09-24

Can you mix industrial, rap, reggae, pop, and jazz into an intelligible combination? Earthsuit has, and they have done it admirably. The title of their debut project, Kaleidoscope Superior, is undoubtedly linked with the sound they have achieved. Produced by David Leonard (Indigo Girls, John Mellancamp, Toto, Oingo Boingo, Prince), the lavish spread of drums, electronics, and guitars is like an ornate tapestry. This music moves between aggressive and atmospheric moods with a seamless flow. Another thread that gives this project its identity is the otherworldly quality inherent in both music and lyric. The messages that Earthsuit presents are not typical Christian subject matter. Taking a mythical and philosophical approach to faith, they challenge the listener to ponder as well as listen. Even if you don't plug into the transcendent journey that Earthsuit takes, the music pulls its own weight. There is enough talent here to land Earthsuit in the company of mainstream musicians who are known for their superior artistry. --Israel Button

4 out of 5 stars Before there was MUTEMATH.......2007-01-26

Earthsuit is like a early collegiate version of MUTEMATH with a hint of a hip-hop edge akin to 311. Again a unique sound coming from a great group of guys.

1 out of 5 stars this is not rock.......2005-03-13

Don't let all those other reviews fool you. The music on this cd is NOT rock; rather it is more in the vien of adult contemporary hits. So if you like John Mellancamp, Prince, and crap like that then you will probably like this cd. If you are looking for a rock cd then keep looking.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice mix.......2004-09-18

This is the most unique album I've ever heard in this genre. It mostly has a progressive sound. Like Saga meets Linkin Park. The lyrics have a great message. Its great to listen to while relaxing.

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Difference from Boring Tradition.......2004-06-16

Earthsuit breaks barriers that most bands falsely boast of breaking. Everything about the requires a second look: the lyrics, the music, their message; it is an interestingly refreshing refuge from the mundane contemporary christian music that is coming out now.

5 out of 5 stars CHRISTIAN ROCK AIN'T WHAT IS USED TO BE.......2004-02-19

I'd heard Christian rock in the 70's....Christian Rock in the 80's. It was like,... well, no disrespect... but it was like the Carpenters.... That's not ROCK. The 90's, was a bit better. But now, here in the 2000's thank GOD! Christian Rock finally rocks. And this band EARTHSUIT is one of the most underated, unheard of bands in Rockdom. They merge, as most in this genre do, as a blend of Pop Rock, Punk, Rap, and Newage... This album is so excellent I don't see how they could do it one better. Every song is great on this cd, but my favorites are the 'hit' - "One Time", "Against the Grain"(best), "Do you Enjoy the Distortion?". Other Christian bands that I like are P.O.D., Jars of Clay, and Audio Adrenaline. And these guys are better than all of the above.Awesome.

4 out of 5 stars defining the psychedelic era.......2007-04-16

This is one of the few groups of the psychedelic era whose musicianship was equal to their ambition. They delve into all sorts of musical genres and invent a couple of their own. If you like the '60s psychedelic sound as well as the quirkiness of lesser known groups like the Incredible String Band or Jim Kweskin these guys deserve a listen. Good headphones are the order of the day!

5 out of 5 stars Genius........2004-05-01

Is it possible for a band to be too good? Is it possible for a band to be too ahead of its time, too talented, too ecclectic, too innovative, too brilliant? Sadly, the answer is yes.
I have been swimming through the beautiful depths of 60's music for years. My all-time favorite band is of course LOVE. I adore the famous bands like the Byrds, Doors, Kinks, Beatles, Country Joe, Donovan, etc. as well as the lesser knowns like The Moon, the Brigade, Pearls Before Swine, Terry Reid, etc.. -- but until I found this 3-disc set of Kaleidescope (USA), I honestly didn't think there were anymore TRULY great bands from the 60's that I didn't know.
These guys were incredible. One minute sounding like the Seeds, the next like the Byrds, and then all of a sudden -- sounding totally unique and un-classifiable. Some songs are dreamy folk-psych ("Keep Your Mind Open") and the next you're listening to Middle-Eastern journeys, and then back to solid '60s pop, and then suddenly into rag-time country music. All over the map. All over the place. Vocals are outstanding. Lyrics incredible. And the musical innovations just don't stop. How is it possible that this band has been so over-looked for so long? Too genius...?

When I wrote about it some person made it very clear the it was my error -- I guess I should know that I am not very knowledgable. Of course they say that they will return it but they charged me for shipping. I know they will print this becuase they don't read anything that I send them. rob k in St. Thoams USVI

This soundtrack is like LOTR in that you can put it on in the background and play it over and over.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Very surprised it didn't win an Oscar.......2003-09-26

This soundtrack is one of the most powerful soundtracks I've ever listen to. I believe Howard Shore won an Oscar for his soundtrack to Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring the same year that A Beautiful Mind came out... unfortunately, Horner was robbed that year, although I also too love Shore's score.

Horner opens with "A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics." It comepletely draws the listener, or watcher (if viewing the movie), in. The music literally sounds like a Kaleidoscope, as if one could litterally HEAR the different colors ... and yet not randomly, but in a cohesive mathimatical way. And then, approximately one and a half minutes into the piece, a sobering, more pensive movement, yet colored again with the interesting flurishes abundant in the first minute and a half.

I've never reviewed music before, but have been an avid listener to scores and soundtracks for years. This, along with the single piece from Castaway by Alan Silvestri, and both the scores from Empire of the Sun and Hook by John Williams, TOPS the list of all time favorites. Check 'em out!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sound Quality.......2003-06-02

I saw this movie and was very impressed with it. Russel Crowe and Jennifer Connelly put on wonderful performances. Although one of the best parts of this movie is the haunting soundtrack. There is a bit of mathematical precision to the music and because of the multichannel aspect of the SACD, the room is filled with music. One of the things I like about this format is the fuzzyness of the music. You can hear the reverberations and things and they aren't cleaned out by the clipping. Given all the interplay on this soundtrack, this is probably the best format to hear it on.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Live For You.......2007-02-22

I bought this because I loved "Live For You", but I didn't enjoy much of Kaleidoscope at all. Entirely too hip hop-esque for my taste, but I did like a few of the songs: Lead Me, Brand New Life, Beautiful, No Greater Love and Give Your Heart Away.

As an aside..Rachael's music video of Savior Song reminded me of a conservative Britney Spears; I can't say that I was impressed. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems that Lampa is trying to compete with the secular market by participating in toned down worldly productions. I couldn't help but wonder if I donned a cutsie outfit and shook my hips surrounded by gyrating backup singers, could I effectively give my testimony and present the Gospel?

While Christian artists are becoming more and more questionable in dress and actions (If you don't believe me, take a look at Jaci Velasquez movie, Chasing Papi and her albums where she sports a strapless dress in one photo and tight revealing outfits in others. Also, watch as these young female artists age through their photos. Early photos show proper modestly dressed young ladies and later photos showcase the female form through tight, revealing clothing.) One must wonder how they're going to try to keep up with the rest of the popular market and where they're going to go from here?

4 out of 5 stars I appluad Rachael!!!!!!.......2006-02-26

This CD is great for any Christian listener! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because her "Live for You" CD is better!

1 out of 5 stars Well,.......2005-02-08

I'm not a huge fan of Rachael Lampa, but Live For You is pretty good and Rachael Lampa is good too. But Kailidoscope? Well, This is what i think:
*The music is all over the place and is not very good at all
*The songs aren't very upliftibg
*Rachael doesn't look as cool as she usually does. Whats up? Pus she shows off with her voice TOO MUCH
No offence anyone, but it's not a good album really, in my opion. Her others are okay, apart from Blur, Im not really a fan though, there are lots more enjoyable albums. If you're totally serious about RL, than grab the CD after listening to the clips. But if you like various different albums and are not serius about Rach, maybe it's not for you..
