Judy And Mary were a band who took the j-pop songbook and turned it inside out with all manners of heavy metal riffs, funk drumming, punk bass playing, and Yuki's expressive voice that made this group a top notch unit. there is alot of energy and intensity in these songs, and everything flows with an electric bubblegum kind of poison. the songs are so cute and so sweet...but yet with some bite. it's a little bit tough to give some comparisons; but i'll try. imagine Big Star or the New Pornagraphers in the studio with members of Nirvana joining in for the jam session; then add some jazzy interludes, some guys goofing around with the keyboards, and a guitarist who can barely keep his fingers still. does that give you a mental image? this is certainly pop rock and roll...and this could be the greatest thing you've ever heard...or it could be the most annoying band you've ever laid ears on. personally, i feel in love with this band when i first visited japan and i heard this cd. i gathered their old releases and eagerly awaited their future albums when they came out. The Power Source remains as their best album (with the excellent Warp record coming awfully, awfully close...perhaps it's a tie for first place)...from the fragmented beginnings of the twisted pop masterpiece of "Birthday Song" to the final punked out anthem of "The Great Escape", Judy And Mary is a recomended band for those who like their j-pop upbeat, daring, surprising, and loud!

This CD is by far, the best CD they ever made. It leaves their pop-punk roots and provides a heavier, sophisticated sound that leaves your senses tingling. Sobakasu is good, but my personal fav is happy?. I definently suggest you buy it.

This album is definitely the peak of the band. From the album, the main song-writer shifts from bassist Onda to the Guitarist TAKUYA. This shifting makes the music element of JAM being much more sophisticated besides the traditional sweet punk-pop. The style of this album is much faster, heavier than they used to. There also much more different style of arrangement as they used to. Besides the magnificent rockers like birthday, happy?(my favourite, good skill on intrusment, superb rhythm, excellent vocal), Kujira 12, the Great Escape and those wonderful punkpop/poprock like classic, and the famous, Sobakasu, the song Pinky loves him is the most distinguish track in this album. The swing beat and the guitar is the brand new stuff offered by JAM. What we can't skip is the lyrics and vocal of YUKI, she is still the biggest factor why we love JAM. If you don't resist loudness, you would just love this masterpiece till you die.

I originall purchased this album because it has the song "Sobakasu" (freckles) on it. I claim The Power Source to be the best JAM album because of the balance between noise and floating melody combined with piercing lyrics. The opening track, "BIRTHDAY SONG," sets the tone of the album with lyrics such as "Okubyou na hoshi no negai ni kizuite. Ah, namida ga tomaranai yoru ni." "Lovely Baby," and "The Great Escape" are movement, "Sobakasu" and "Kujira 12 Go" fun, and the jazzy "Pinky loves him" round off the album. My favorite JAM song, "Kaze ni Fukarete" (Blowing in the Wind) has Takuya playing a a combination of rhythm and smooth lead, and Yuki with lyrics that run like a cold drip of water down my back yet keep me warm like a wool blanket. There is no track that I do not love.

I would recommend this album to those who are interested in melodic noise music with powerful lyrics.

This girl can wail, scream, careen, caress, shriek, rattle n' roll. More screech than A.C. Slater, more fuzz than Robin Williams. The sound rocks and it will rock you until your ears bleed... this ain't no Tupperware J-Pop. This is real live stuff to be played so loud you gotta wear plugs. What does it sound like? Like a dying cat. Like Charlie Mingus' dying cat. It'll make you cringe at the same time it gives you a groove-on. You're gonna wish you could sing with a Southern accent and a squealy woman's voice. This music is hard core. If you can't take the noise, stay out of the Power Source.

Very Poor quality of recording. They are the original artists - but not original recordings.

Be careful if ordering this set. The songs are supposedly sung by the original artists but these are not the original recordings. Apparantly the orginal artists re-recorded these songs and the sound is just not the same. I recommend you look for something with the original recordings!!

      If you're looking to bring back some old memories through music, KEEP LOOKING.
      I ordered this disc expecting to be taken back to younger days when these songs were the standards on the local AM radio stations. Instead, what I got sounded more like a karaoke bar. It would appear that few,if any, of these tracks are the original recordings, or even re-mastered from the originals. Upon examining the "fine print" on the back of the jewel cases, it reads, "This album may contain re-recorded tracks by the original artist. Tracks featuring groups may not include original members."
      [money]- I guess it's true - you get what you pay for, although in this case, I still feel I was short-changed.

        James Bowman is a great singer, and one of my favourite performers. One can listen to his CDs over and over again, without tiring.

        He feels at home in both English songs and other languages. This CD is a "summary" of some other collection CDs of him.

        ýIN SHORT: Good buy for lovers of vocal music, or the baroque and classical. If you don't know his singing, you're missing a lot, and this CD is a great start.
