This is Chanticleer's 25th recording and also marks its 25th anniversary season. The title refers to the group's wide-ranging repertoire; this disc includes Mexican baroque, traditional American songs in various styles and music commissioned by Chanticleer itself. A program that tries to please everybody is bound to disappoint somebody; however, no one could be disappointed by the singing. The sound of these 12 unaccompanied male voices has an unearthly, celestial beauty and purity; their blend is perfect. Though the singers rarely use vibrato, their intonation is impeccable both together and in solos. Their expressive range and stylistic versatility are incredible: they can project tenderness, pleading, and bitter protest and are equally at home in plainchant, Latin hymns, blues, spirituals, shouts and crooning. Among the highlights are the three opening hymns, settings of two poems of Torquato Tasso by William Hawley, commissioned by Chanticleer, which combine 16th- and 20th-century styles, and the two final folksongs, the last with a stride-style piano accompaniment, making a rousing, exuberant ending. The booklet, in three languages, is well laid-out and informative. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, ecclectic album.......2007-07-11
This CD is a great example of Chanticleer's phenomenal versatility, and it has something for everyone to appreciate. The Appalacian twang on the two Billings pieces is a bit much, but otherwise Chanticleer is in top form here and really shows what they are made of. As for the recording itself, something about the micing or acoustics in the recording process causes the countertenors to be just a tad too strong on a few tracks, but it's not a major problem.
To me, the most extraordinary tracks are: The Un-Covered Wagon with it's surreal effects and incredible array of vocal techniques, Willow Weep For Me, Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair (Michael Lichtenauer's solo floats so effortlessly in a mixed vocal register, I have never heard anything like it!), and Whispers.
Warning: This CD Is Addictive.......2006-12-10
I purchased this CD after hearing this magnificent choral group sing "Calling My Children Home" in a recent concert. Written by Doyle Lawson (from the group "Quicksilver"), Charlie Waller and Robert Yates, the song is a standard bluegrass number I had known for years (Emmy Lou Harris for one has recorded it); but I had no idea it had found its way to San Francisco. Chanticleer has made this song their own. I cannot imagine anyone else's version coming close to theirs.
The group sings 17 other songs on this CD, most of them arranged by Joseph Jennings, Chanticleer's music director. Their version of William Billings' "David's Lamentation," a Sacred Harp work, will blow you away. Another favorite of mine is "Wayfaring' Stranger." There are also two Stephen Foster songs included, "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Camptown Races" as well as Gershwin and other American composers.
There seems to be no kind of music that this group cannot sing better than most other groups. They remind us that there is no musical instrument more beautiful than the human voice.
This CD should be one for the time capsule.
Well worth buying.......2005-08-16
Chanticleer fans know what to expect in terms of vocal quality, and won't be disappointed. I agree with another reviewer that the Appalachian accent is a little over the top, but I thought the shape-note style was perfect: brilliant sound, but not that nasal.
I enjoyed the many styles of music in this CD, but since I tend to listen to CDs straight through as albums, I found it a little disconcerting to go so suddenly from one style to the next (e.g., Mexican Baroque to shape note).
That being said, everything is splendidly, sensitively performed. The renditions of "Whispers" and "The Un-Covered Wagon" are breathtaking. By all means, buy and enjoy this!
Good variety of American Choral Music.......2005-01-03
This album features a wonderful selection of "American" choral music. I'm not a big fan of the "stylized" singing of the shape-note pieces (with the nasal voices), but that is my only complaint. My favorite piece is Steven Stucky's "Whispers" which is an artfully crafted homage to Orlando Gibbons' "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears" and William Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus." Joseph Jennings and Chanticleer effectively demonstrate that there is no "defining" American choral music and it is this rich panoply of variety which is so enchanting!
Absolutely wonderful!!.......2003-10-25
This album shows Chanticleer's great talent and it displays they're wonderful voices. I've seen them perform pieces from this album and they do it with such passion. It's wonderful. If you don't get this or any of their albums you truly are missing out!!

Customer Reviews:
An American Indian Story.......2007-05-12
To say that Native Americans are discriminated against does not begin to describe their situation. They are a forgotten people. In this album, Jana provides a musical perspective that will make listeners stop and think about what we have done to the original inhabitants of America. Through Jana's beautiful singing and selfless deeds, Native American children once again have reason to hope. Jana is truly a very special person.
Beautiful voice, maybe not best work- still worth having.......2007-03-03
I already had "Flash of a Firefly" and "American Indian Christmas" so when this CD came out I got it too.
As with the other CD's Jana has a beautiful voice and several photos of the singer are with the CD (the artwork on the front is very much like the photo of Jana on the back). The music isn't very "Indian" but will probably be found likeable to most listeners.
The background of the CD is the story of an Indian girl whose tribe is forced by weather to relocate ,finding a new home and living in peace with other tribes until visitors come. Generally the songs reflect this in some way and all have some sort of Indian influence to them. Most of the liner pages are brown in color with light brown lettering that make the lyrics very hard to read.
I think most have some uncredited background vocals in some language and most songs have bits in some Indian language too. #2 "The Journey" and #4 "The Sacred gift of Mother Earth" have some Lumbee but none of it is listed with the lyrics. #5 "The Hunt" has some Lakota lyrics (they're shown) but no translation. $6 "The First Celebration" is done the same way but with Oneida. #7 "The Spirit of One" has some lyrics in Navajo- they're shown and translated. This last song appears to be in part taken from from "One Spirit" on the "Flash of a Firefly" album.
For some reason several final lines of #10 "The Visitors" are listed but not actually sung- I have no idea why.
"American Indian Christmas" is better but this is a nice album to have.

American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09
Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)
Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01
Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").
Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.
This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

Like the wind that sweeps away the singer in "Teotihuacan," the first song on Perla Batalla's Heaven and Earth, the Los Angelina world-folk singer's deeply soulful voice lifts and carries us through her Mestiza song-cycle. Batalla's Latin ancestry is at the center of Heaven and is an ongoing theme in a superb body of work that includes her critically lauded Mestiza (1999). From the gospel-flavored vocals of the title track to the redemptive, sweeping "Salvation" to her mesmerizing meditation on racism, "Making Up for Lost Time," Heaven is a sublime statement from an artist whose voice and poetry are in union with her rich cultural roots. As well as being Batalla's songwriting and producing partner, guitarist David Batteau's notes shimmer and glide in poetic response to every emotional nuance of the singer's voice--one moment picking out razor-sharp melodic lines and the next moment strumming with passionate abandon. With a generous and wide-open heart, Perla Batalla and her musical caravan--which includes percussionist Claud Mann and the extraordinarily versatile drummer-percussionist Debra Dobkin--invite us to join them on their Mestiza voyage. --Michael Wells
Album Description
Perla Batalla's "Mestiza" voyage continues. Co-written with David Batteau, Heaven and Earth is a compelling celebration of the emotion and depth of living in two worlds. Perla's songs describe a rich and complex blending of history, blood and culture.

Become wrapped up in the music of this amazing talent!.......2004-01-13
Hypnotic, entrancing and completely original, this artist's music will pleasantly haunt you and merit repeated play on your stereo! Look for more titles by this gifted musician!
Incredibly Soothing..........2001-11-07
I cannot count the times I have played this CD while commuting on the Los Angeles-area freeways since the September 11 atrocities...incredibly soothing vocals, clean arrangements. An incredible talent.
Heaven and Earth.......2001-05-15
Perla Batalla's rich voice and soulful delivery astound me every time I hear her. She constantly amazes me with her mastery and personal honesty. When Perla sings, her soul flies and takes you to new realms. If you ever have the opportunity to see Perla in person, she is the most astounding performer you will ever be blessed to witness. She takes you on a journey that will change you forever. She is all voice and heart. If you are looking for pure soul, Perla has it. Buy two CD's, because you will want to share this with a friend.
Appropriate Title.......2000-11-15
This is an appropriate title for a work of great sophistication, polish and depth. Then again it has a beat you can dance to. Material like this should be a template for serious artists who won't give in to the flesh peddlars in the record industry who make music for 14 year olds. I have been a fan of Perla's singing since the early days and the voice just gets better and better. She is without any doubt one of the greatest singers on the planet. What makes this work so elegant and impressive is the quality of the song writing and experienced treatment of the material by seasoned pros who never sold out to make a buck. I believe the lady produced the disc herself and put s everything she has into the songs, literally and figuratively. The addition of Debra Dobkin as a percussionist, plus pristine production really makes this a treat for the ears beyond the magnificent Batalla voice. "Heaven and Earth," "The First Time I Felt Rain," and "Starbound" are utterly astounding in the literate quality of David Batteau's lyrics alongside melodies that have downright pop hooks (I mean that in a complimentary way). Calling this popular music doesn't really do it justice but it is beyond labelling. This album is uplifting, intriguing and then there is the bonus of that gorgeous voice that has only a few rivals today or in the past. Songs like these have a way of lifting you up and allowing you to see the other side of life, the side of joy and celebration of the human spirit. "Heaven and Earth" is a CD you would want to include in that desert island stash and nobody would vote you off the island for your impeccable taste in music. Bless you Perla!
Epiphany!!.......2000-11-04
Perla Batalla has the voice of an angel, the looks of a goddess and the songwriting ability of a poet. I bought Heaven and Earth because I loved Mestiza so much and my favorite songs on the new cd are Out of the Labyrinth and The First Time I Felt Rain, but each and every song is as delightful as the next and I can't seem to get enough of this cd. I'm buying extra copies as gifts for my favorite friends who appreciate great music. I highly recommend this cd.

Like Eric Alexander, another excellent young saxophonist, Donny McCaslin reveals a healthy respect for the classic muscular tenor sound--no wispy, half-hearted emoting for him. But on Soar, as on previous efforts under his own name, he forcefully departs the jazz mainstream to engage in Panamanian folk tunes, post-fusion melodies and open-ended modern structures. McCaslin, who recently replaced Chris Potter in Dave Douglas' quintet, is supported by two of his cohorts in the Maria Schneider Orchestra: Luciana Souza, whose wordless vocals color the sound with pastel cool and act as a lively harmonic foil, and guitarist Ben Monder, who provides lyrical heat. Producer Dave Binney keeps the sound varied, making good use of McCaslin's flute playing (and tenor overdubs) and adding brass to a couple of performances. The gifted pianist Orrin Evans keeps his gospel chops under wraps but, together with bassist Scott Colley, provides exceptionally graceful support. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Donny's Latin Jazz Disc . . ........2006-04-27
. . . certainly his finest effort to date.
Here's an entirely accomplished jazz tenor saxophonist who's never, until now, fully realized his huge potential.
Well, I'm here to tell you that he's finally done it. With Soar, he puts to rest any lingering sense that he may never achieve the heights gained by the top practioners of his peculiar art.
He's been edging toward this magnificence with his last several discs, but fully committing to Latin jazz seems to have been the right move for this prodigiously talented jazzman. He reminds me, somewhat, of Dave Binney, the brilliant alto saxist, who has struck it big with Free to Dream, Welcome to Life, and South--all in the Latin mode. On this disc, McCaslin smartly recruits such Latin standouts as vocalist Luciana Souza, drummer Antonio Sanchez, percussionist Pernell Saturnino, and trombone player Luis Bonilla to create a wonderfully evocative South-of-the-border sensibility. Throw in Orrin Evans (piano) and Ben Monder (guitar), players one doesn't automatically identify as Latin icons but who marvelously intuit that vibe, and you've got a band of huge suggestiveness.
Top tunes include the huge evocative "Hero as a Boy," with its mesmeric repetitive figure, "Tanya," a (w)ringing statement of purely primitive emotion, and the title track, "Soar," with its percussive drive, intricate doubling of sax and trumpet, and lilting piano figurers.
Make no mistake: true magic's going down here.
Ignore at your own risk.

It Rocks!!! Bow Down to the Indians..............2001-06-25
Hey, to all you out there! The second I heard this CD I wanted it. I was listening to it while at my dad's house. It has a great spiritual feeling. It made me want to get up and Jingle dance. This CD made me even more want to get involved with my culture and social activities. I rate it a 5***** record.
Gathering of the Nations.......2001-03-12
I was fortunate enough to attend the Gathering of the Nations in Albuquerque in 1999 while on vacation. I went to a dance festival and was mesmerized by the powerful culture of the Native American cultures in attendance: their drums, singing, and dancing. As soon as I heard this CD was out, I bought it to forever remember going to one of the dances. Though it is not the same from the CD player as it was live, this CD stills embodies a lot of the festivities that week. If you are not really into Native American culture it might not be something worth picking up; however, if you like powwow music this CD is definitely a good buy. IThe only problem is that some of the meaning of the songs is lost on me, as I am a casual observer of the music and culture. If you like the CD, go to the festival in April.

American Indian Christmas.......2007-01-25
I heard Jana on N.P.R. last year and went straight to Amazon and ordered her Christmas CD. What a breath of fresh air she is to the Christmas scene. The funny part is you find out that you don't know the lyrics to the Christmas songs like you thought you did. I recommend her to anyone who wants something a bit different to listen to at Christmas.
American Indian Christmas.......2007-01-15
I was very pleased with the CD, the music was lovely, familiar Christmas songs sang in the words of the different tribes of Native Americans. Made me really listen to the words and songs that I know so well I usually take them for granted and it was so lovely and calming. Jana has a beautiful voice, very pleasant and relaxing. I have always been interested in the Native Americans, reading and visiting the Museum in Washington, DC, but never had music by them before and I am very glad I purchased this CD and will probably consider buying more in the future. Thank you for helping make my Christmas enjoyable with your lovely version of the Christmas music. Pat Reiber, Reading, PA
Delightful listening experience.......2007-01-10
Jana has a beautiful voice. Hearing the familiar Christmas carols in the various Native American languages is a wonderful and delightful listening experience.
well worth owning, Jana has a beautiful voice.......2006-11-24
I first learned of ths CD from another, more expensive source, and decided that I wanted to get it. I don't know why Amazon doesn't have sound samples but if you get the CD you'll find that Jana has a beautiful voice.
10 different American Indian languages for the 10 songs, the instrumental part is modern non-Indian and the songs themselves have been adapted very well. I suspect that the rhythm isn't traditional for each language but the effect works so well few will mind, played in the background a casual listener might not even notice they aren't in English.
Everything is good but I think I liked #4 "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" (Lakota) and #10 "Amazing Grace" (Lumbee) perhaps the best.
I'd like to have English/Indian lyrics for the songs, you don't get that, but find no fault with this CD otherwise.
Buy it for Christmas and get someone else a copy, you won't regret it.
American Indiam Christmas.......2006-10-03
Jana has a pure, clear, beautiful voice. Hearing the familiar Christmas songs in different languages gives the beautiful old songs a new and appealing sound. Silent Night and Amazing Grace are especially beautiful.

Lost Classic.......2007-04-19
I heard this album for the first time within the last month and what a brilliant album, what a beautiful piece of music and some of the lyrics will send chills up your spine. When they do those list of top 100 albums of all time this album should be included not a bad track and the whole album just flows as far as classic albums go this is up there with Sgt Pepper,Nevermind and Never mind the Bollocks thats how good it is.
Not For Everyone.......2004-01-23
The truths lie within the music and lyrics of these songs but not everyone is enlightened enough to deal with the truth. If you are, welcome, it will fuel your fire!
An old rock head speaks again (Rocks are all colors).......2001-07-14
Plight of the Redman is a must for your knowledge of Native American Soul. Tom Bee and his bandmates have hit the core of the spirit and truth with these recordings, as well with (Silent Warrior). Plight of the Redman is a musical and social gem.
