5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Soulful.......2007-07-03

I first heard this recording at a session at the 2007 conference of the Association for African American Historical Research and Preservation and I have been listening to it ever since. This CD really is a celebration of music.

I have put in this CD without telling people what it was and have enjoyed the totally positive response.

2 out of 5 stars Was disappointed.......2007-05-22

I bought this CD because of the great reviews and didn't like it at all. Too loud and abrasive for my ears... I gave it away to someone who might better like it.

I expected it to be mellifluous and soulful but found it rather annoying... especially at the holidays.

5 out of 5 stars excellent, excellent cd.......2007-04-26

there is nothing more i could say about this cd that the other reviewers haven't already mentioned - it is a must have for anyone, even if you are not a fan of christian music. i had never even heard of this project - i bought it soon after it came out, simply because i liked the cover art and thought it would be a good cd to have around christmas. it's better than that - i listen to it year round. every song, no matter what style, is delivered with all heart and soul possible. excellent lift-you-up music, and great to listen to in the mornings to get you pumped up for the day. "and he shall purify" is simply electrifying. i am also a big fan of the final song, "halleluja!" and "but who may abide the day of his coming" will just set you free! year round, this is an outstanding example of gospel, jazz, hip-hop and absolute zeal for any music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Recording.......2007-04-11

Handel's Messiah: A Soulful Celebration is a masterful interpretation of an age old classic. The arrangements are sheer brilliance. My hats off to Mervyn Warren and all those involved in this project.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!.......2007-03-16

This album won a Grammy many years ago. I saw a Gospel Choir perform the Halleluah Chorus live at the award show. Since then I have not only enjoyed the recording tremendously myself I have given it to several people at Christmas time and they have been equally enthralled. I loaned it to my son's High School Choir teacher and finaaly made it a gift when he refused to give it back!

5 out of 5 stars Joy In Worship.......2007-01-10

I would recommend that anyone who loves up beat gospel music get this one, if only for track 7, All Night Long. I love this song, it came on @ 6 AM one morning to my alarm clock, I immediately woke up singing and crying this song. I went on to have a wonderful day. I had to search the web to find it, and once I did, I had to order several more for 2 of my friends, who also happened to be my Minister and Pastor.

    5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2007-01-09

This CD was recommended to me by a dear friend. Oh my goodness. I seldom ever take it out of my player. His testimony about his son and the following song, From Me To You Lord, for me, takes me right before the throne of God. I love good traditional heart and spirit felt music and truly You Deserve My Worship, is all of that and more for me as well as those at our church. Even the children love to sing, You Deserve My Worship.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Job!.......2006-03-03

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey in a church that Alvin Darling played piano and organ in at one time. I had to go all the way to North Carolina to hear this wonderful work. Immediately upon my return to Newark, New Jersey, I rushed to Amazon's website to purchase "I called on the Lord" I've enjoyed it immensely. Good Job Alvin Darling!

5 out of 5 stars worship and praise.......2005-09-27

I thought this CD was awesome. I ordered this CD to hear the song"All Night" but became intrigued with many of the other songs including "Testimony". I listen to this album almost every morning going to work. It is a very inspirational CD with lots of praise and worship. It helps to start my day off on the right note.

    5 out of 5 stars A Blessing!.......2005-09-27

I purchased this CD for "All Night". When I began browsing through the intro's to see what else I liked, I had to go to the beginning and just listen to the entire CD. Each song captured me. Each song has a message for someone in your congregation - Very appropriate for Sunday Morning Worship. Buy it today, you will enjoy!

This is an awesome CD (and video too).
The Cathedrals cap off their ministry with an outstanding concert of a lifetime. They sing many of their hits and old favorites with energy and enthusiasm.
An added little "extra" is special appearances Sandi Patty, The Statler Brother and The Oak Ridge Boys.
Wonderful CD and I highly recommend it.

What a classy group of gentlemen. Talk about an absolutely awesome tribute and an even greater talent. Truly God's gifts at work.

The presentation of this work is so inspiring and uplifting, I believe it's what God gave us gospel music for. I play it over and over and over. The talents of Glen Payne and George Younce are showcased wonderfully! The "supporting cast" isn't bad either.

Get a copy for yourself a.s.a.p.

This is my second review because I can't say enough about this CD. I just placed another order for an additional two CD's for Christmas. The selections on this CD had to have been sent from Heaven and are sung with such heart and love put forth by the Cathedrals. If you are ever down in the dumps, this Cathedral CD will bring you up. Best music on the face of this earth.

5 out of 5 stars Great live, great cd........2005-02-23

I just discovered Babbie 1/10/04 when she came to North Metro church in Marietta to participate in a benefit concert with Mac Powell (of Third Day), Todd Fields (Worship leader at Northpointe Community Church in Alpharetta, GA which is led by Andy Stanley, son of Charles Stanley), Kenn Kington and the Pat Terry Group (very big in Christian music in the 70's - legendary pioneers of Christian Rock). To say she has an amazing voice would not really do her justice. She has a presence about her when she performs that says "I'm totally at ease". It's important to point that out as that comes through in all of her songs on this cd. She'll lead you to lift up the Lord and let you sing along and praise the Lord at the same time. On this particular recording she's singing live so you'll be able to enjoy the passion that she sings with live. This cd is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Christian artist.......2000-03-10

I really enjoyed this cd by Babbie Mason. I like the tempo first a lot of fast up beat melodies, then it simmers down to nice quiet rythms. I particulary like "He'll find a way" and "God has another plan".

I love all the cd's by Babbie. I put on the music in the car, and start singing with her. Don't we all wish we could sing like "Babbie". I was able to share with the congregation another one of Babbie's songs', God is Good... (All the Time)". I purchased the trax/accompainment tape. My whole church loved it and they became more familiar with her music. God is really sweeping through the Gospel music industry with Babbie. She's the true "Aretha" of Gospel and Christian music. God Bless!

5 out of 5 stars Babbie Mason--Soaring on the wings of a DOVE!.......1998-09-07

Babbie Mason is absolutely an inspired and motivated woman of God. Her music bears the fruit of the depth of the relationship she has grown into with Christ. Babbie is quite the pacesetter in the front lines of Inspirational Christian Music. She is quite the minority on her record label in that she is a solo black female artist, whose music is successfully soaring it's way into multi-cultural societies despite socio-economic backgrounds. Mason, winner of a long-awaited Dove Award (and countless nominations), has placed herself in the forefront again for the live recording of the Praise Celebration album, in which she is always careful to give God the praise. Babbie, your labor for Christ is not in vain so constantly and consistently keep Him and only Him ever before you. May the Peace of the Lord continue to lead you in all that you do.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-04

My family loves this CD. We listen to it all year, not just around Christmas. It is very uplifting. Out of the recordings we have by Talbot, this is our favorite.

    5 out of 5 stars A Medieval Christmas Treat.......2006-10-24

I have almost 150 Christmas CDs, so believe me when I say this is one of the best Christmas albums I've ever heard! Christmas is about Christ, which this album makes abundantly and beautifully clear. Most of the songs are traditional carols, some of them quite ancient, while the others are originals written by Mr. Talbot.

The songs blend absolutely gorgeous orchestrations and arrangements with a boy's choir and a hearty English chorale with definite medieval overtones. The two songs with Mr. Talbot's fellow monks just add to the overall effect of transporting the listener into the midst of a medieval celebration. I've heard no other Christmas album like this, although the Mannheim Steamroller albums would be closest in style, and can't recommend it highly enough. Very beautiful, very spiritual, this album is truly what Christmas is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas At The Hermitage ~ A Franciscan Flavor To The Season.......2006-03-30

'Birth of Jesus: A Celebration of Christmas' is John Michael Talbot's nineteenth release. This CD contains -12 tracks- of beautifully performed traditional songs of the season. Some you'll know, ('We Three Kings'), others you probably won't ('The Appointed Time'). Still all in all, a very nice addition to anyones Christmas CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Makes your heart pause.......2003-10-29

This is a really emotional album. Your heart hears the real meaning of Christmas and your soul will like it. If you are tired of the really POP Christmas music and would like to go to that quiet place, this is the CD for you. Michael is so talented and a really gifted musician. He uses traditional insturments to make this a very enjoyable listen. You will play this again and again. The birth of Jesus made me cry

3 out of 5 stars Pleasingly UNINSPIRED effort..........2005-11-28

From the film composer of the "Magnifcant Seven" and "To Kill A
Mocking Bird" we are given this homage to his two lifelong friends Christopher Palmer(a great orchestator)and Christopher Parkening the featured soloist. Over the years the two had to urge Elmer Bernstein to commit time to compose the concerto. By the time of it's Honolulu premiere in 1999, we get a work seemingly faceless
and more of a accomdation, not typical of the composer. Don't take this wrong as it is not a bad composition. The three movements are harmonically conservative. There is also a broad cinematic melodic line throughout which the guitar soloist works around. However there isn't any one thing that makes the concerto memorable enough for repeated listening. The concerto
and the filler selections flow together for a seemingly nonintrusive 48 minutes. There is not much here to take your mind off whatever else you are doing. Just sit back and enjoy it for what it is! Ear Candy! Good liner notes provided.

From Elmer Bernstein's liner notes: "The guitar is an instrument that lives happily in the diatonic world, a world in which I am most comfortable. I have made no attempt to force the instrument into what I would consider to be unnatural harmonic territory and have instead elected to let the guitar sing comfortably and joyously where it feels most natural ... The piece is harmonically conservative."

Which is exactly what I dislike about it. Parkening deserves better than Elmer's fuddy-duddy diatonicism. There's a whole other world of chromatic fabulousness out there and Elmer chose to ignore it. The result is musical banality. Don't get me wrong. It succeeds on its own terms and I enjoy it. But like Elmer himself said, the harmonic language is strictly squaresville.

The first movement is loud and kinetic. And because of the guitar's softness, there's not much simultaneous playing from the guitar and the orchestra. So what you hear is the goofy spectacle of a soft guitar alternating with a bombastic orchestra. There's better interaction in the second & third movements. I like the quiet sinister passage at the very end of the REFLECTIONS movement.

From John Demma Van Hagen's review at sonicnet: "Elmer Bernstein bombards the listener with thick and distracting orchestration. The first movement, GUITAR, seems an almost direct quote from a militaristic action flick, complete with an overzealous battery of percussionists and low strings. This over-orchestration leaves the brilliant performance of Christopher Parkening at a bit of a disadvantage, almost forcing him to produce a tinny sound by playing closer to the bridge. Other movements fare slightly better, but it remains a mystery why Bernstein did not use a more jazz-infused harmonic language, as he did in the score for THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM."

    5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2003-06-06

As I was reading the reviews by
other, I was wondering if they
ever held a guitar in their arms?
    Mr Parkening plays the guitar
    wonderful, no wonder why he
is one of the greatest guitarists
of our times. I like this recording,
my favorite is the guitar concerto
    by E.Bernstein. The E.Bernstein is
full of life and sunny melodies,
    especially in the last movement.
    Even the contemplative slow middle
movement of the concerto is radiant,
but at the same time contemplative.
The "Essay for Gutar", by Jack Marshall,
is a work of high stature, and like
    E. Bernstein's concerto it is too
    full of life.
    Great recording, and outstanding works,
hurray for the new guitar concerto!!!

2 out of 5 stars DOES NOT JUSTIFY Mr. PAKENING FAME.......2001-12-10

The initial songs on this CD are a kind of interplay between the orchestra and the guitar player. The music sounds like if it were the soundtrack of some movie besides that I really think that on those initial songs there is little room for Mr. Parkening to justify his fame because the orchestra takes a principal role in the playing. As the CD goes its way to the end, the guitarist takes the principal role in the playing leaving the orchestra to back him up. The pieces of music are slow and inspire you to read some poetry or may be playing it in a romantic date. However I really think that the selection of these pieces does not make justice to Mr Parkening since does let him justify his fame as one of the best guitarists now a days. I think these pieces do not require the most of Mr. Parkening. It seems to me that its light classical music playing. Overall it is not a bad CD for background music but I really agree with one of the reviewers that state that there are beter classical CD's out there not to mention better guitarists. I am sorry I can not tell from this work alone that Mr. Parkening is an excellent guitarrist. This CD left much to be desired.

A final recomendation: there are many guitarrist that deserve a listening but they are not known by the public. An example is Enrique Florez a mexican guitarrist that was disciple of Segovia as well as Narciso Yepes. Unfortunately his CD is not available at amazon but if you ever go to Mexico stop by a music store and ask for one of his CD's (...)
You will see that there are excellent guitarist out there that unfortunatelly they do not have a excellent marketing system back them up.

4 out of 5 stars long live tonality.......2000-12-31

Cheers to Mr Bernstein and Mr Parkening! I purchased this CD because I have been a long time fan of Elmer Bernstein. (Man with Golden Arm and of course, The Ten Commandments) Upon my first listening I too was struck by the "motion picture quality" of the concerto. And at first, thought it a negative. But then I thought I was judging the work on my own point of reference. (motion pictures) well, a hundred years from now people will not be rating this music based on whether it is motion picture music or not. So, I began to listen to it as music, and became enthralled with the composition. Sure, it has it similarities to Aranjuez, and it does get rather bombastic at times, but all in all the concerto is a very solid musical effort. (just pay attention to the various meters in the first movement if you have any question as to whether or not Mr Bernstein knows what he is doing.......and, as far as Mr Parkening is concerned: the man is playing with more soul and maturity today than at any other time. In addition, the La Vega and Essay for guitar(also on the disc) are testimony to the brilliant arranging and writing talents of Jack Marshall. Thank you Mr Bernstein and Mr Parkening.

    5 out of 5 stars My Favorite!.......2002-07-07

I have seven different blues piano cd's and this one is my absolute favorite. It is difficult to find blues piano anything. Today I visited six different music stores and did not find a single blues piano collection. The older blues collections are mainly a little bit of piano backup with a few flourishes. This cd however, is dedicated to piano solo's that really rock. Maybe I prefer the contemporary but either way this cd is awesome.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

As with 1999's Respect box, which chronicled women recording artists, Rhino again attempts to capture and condense a mighty field with the six-CD Say It Loud! And again, it largely succeeds. A companion to the VH1 series of the same name, Say It Loud! tells one story and many. It covers the development of many related genres, the business of locking many outsize talents and personalities into the grooves of records, and the music as it mirrored a rustling, ever-changing society--that last underscored by the inclusion of spoken sound bites (everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr.). But within these larger themes move many smaller but no less compelling tales. The roughly chronological programming allows for accidental, startling juxtapositions--disc one places Paul Robeson's pained, dignified reading of "Ol' Man River" just a few tracks away from bluesman Son House's insistence in "My Black Mama (Part 1)" that "there ain't no burnin' Hell." From there, pop ballads, big bands, bop, gospel, doo-wop, rock & roll, soul from Motown! Memphis! and Philly!, gorgeous civil-rights-era jazz, funk, and rap cohere and speak to one another in a selection about as good as can be expected given its length and various legal restrictions. (The most glaring omission is Stevie Wonder.) Any taint of "this stuff is good for you" is lost in the parade of great gifts, personalities, statements, dance crazes, poetry, and word games. If the above track listing contains lots of names you don't recognize, Say It Loud! will offer you a topnotch one-stop survey course. --Rickey Wright

    3 out of 5 stars a bit silly.......2005-12-05

Isn't this a bit silly? Black music is the basis for a lot, if not most, of the American music we cherish today. Limiting it to 6 CDs just seems disrespectful. It would take someone's entire collection to do justice to black music, which is American music itself, at its finest and most original.

5 out of 5 stars A History of Black Music in America.......2003-02-01

When I found this collection on Amazon.com, I nearly cried (okay, I did cry). This includes much that anyone who truly loves African American music could ever want. It's not only entertaining, it's educational. How pleased I was when it arrived that there were not only six exceptional CD's, but a beautiful book included also. Additionally, I love the excerpts of famous speeches and quotes, etc. that are included between songs. If you truly love R&B as well as it's roots, buy this compilation and be satisfied that this was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have!!.......2002-08-04

To any black person who wants educate their child musically, this is a must have, yes there are some omissions, but the depth and breadth of the artists represented is astonishing. I will listen this with my child very often, as a history lesson.

    4 out of 5 stars What.....No Stevie????.......2002-02-13

Stevie Wonder has to be the epitome of stylistic uniqueness among song writers, African-American or otherwise. He is also one of the most proliferate, with a body of work that spans nearly 4 decades. The influence of his genius upon the music world is unquestionable. How, then, could this musical phenomenon been omitted from an otherwise outstanding collection?

3 out of 5 stars No James Brown???.......2002-01-18

They really have a History of Black Music Compilation and leave out James Brown? No James Brown? Uh...what's going on here? One of the most important figures in music of this century and he's excluded...for shame

    5 out of 5 stars What A Family-What A Show!.......2007-05-10

The Lewis Family are one of my favorite gospel and bluegrass artists. I have been friends with them for 20 years. this is a collection of their music for 50 years. I believe that Pop Lewis last song recorded before he died at the age of 99 in 2004-"I Feel Like Traveling On." Pop plays his harmonica and sings very well.
There are a few new songs on the CD compliation. Lewis sings a new song on the project. May the Lewis Family be around for another 50 years.

5 out of 5 stars Number 1 Bluegrass Gospel Family !.......2005-07-16

I have heard this family on stage and in recordings for the past 3 decades. You can't go wrong choosing a Lewis Family recording. What harmonies! What spirit! What a tight professional performing group! You will not regret purchasing this recording - or any Lewis Family recording. Better yet, go see them in person and you will see and hear why they are the Number 1 Bluegrass Gospel Family. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars CELEBRATION IT IS!!!.......2003-04-09

The album has some songs from the past and some Brand New songs on it. The song "Old Family Table" is worth alone the price of the album. "Family and Friends" Brings an invitation to sit down and enjoy the Lewis Family as they think of their fans as Family and Friends. "Which Came First" talks of the old saying about the Chicken or the Egg debate and in this song it will leave you with little doubt on which one it is, fun spirited it is a toe tappin fun song. Ending the album is

"So Many Years, So Many Blessings" and after spanning a career of 50 Years they have seen Many Blessings during the Many Years.
All in All the album is a combination of hits old and new with new songs.
You can never go wrong buying a Lewis Family Recording. they put 110% into every one and I have never heard on I did not like and I have all their recordings except for two which I am still trying to find since it is from way earlier in their career.
Lastly, Look at checking out Lewis Phillips' recording
"EMPTY FIELDS" Its Lewis' solo project and it is awesome too. I normally do not care for male singers but his record will not dissapoint you!!
