Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

This has to be one of my all time favorite cast recordings. Although as a Broadway musical it didnt have nearly the success of Fiddler it is non the less an excellent recording,and it did win at least TWO Tonys.(I understand the one that Hal Linden won was one of the reasons that he got the job in "Barney Miller".
Of course the best number on the recording is "In my own lifetime",and "Sons" is just slightly chauvinistic but....
Hal Linden is of course magical, Keene Curtis does how many roles and Paul Hecht as the oldest son steals the show in his number with Jill Clayburgh. I do know of one piece of music that was cut from the show that I would love to get my hands on,called "Its just a map". Well worth a listen!

Bock and Harnick may not have reached the heights they did in Fiddler but they have produced a forgotten treasure. The album is better than the show. The songs and emotions are clearer and more effective when you don't have to bother with the labored book which is heavy on European politics and 18th century bond trading. Hal Linden is in fine voice and surprisingly we even get to hear a young Jill Clayburgh vocalize.

This is the most "through-composed" of the musicals of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, as befits the 18th/19th century European setting. Hal Linden's Tony Award-winning performance comes through loud and clear as the partriarch of the family, as does fellow Tony-winner Keene Curtis in a variety of roles. "Sons," "Rothschild and Sons," "Pleasure and Privilege" are standouts. A neglected gem of the musical theater.

        Album Description

        Braid My Hair is the debut album from Elam McKnight. It is an exploration into Deep Blues and Elam refers to the overall sound produced on this album as "Roots Blues". "This is common folk's music. It is inspired by the times of old when music was a vibe thing and capturing a performance was the goal and not whether it sounded polished enough." Three tracks on the album feature Cedric and Gary Burnside (Grandson and Son of Living Blues Legend R.L. Burnside.) "I met Cedric(drums) in Nashville one night and he invited me to Mississippi to jam. I did and met Gary(bass) who is also a wonderful musician. They are both steeped in the Hill Country sound and it was obvious once we hit it off that I needed them to contribute their piece to the overall project. You can tell instantly the tracks they played on and one of the things I like about those recordings is that they were done in a house in Chulahoma, way back in the country. That is about as raw as you can ! get. And with those two it is like `one, two, three go' and you better hang on!"

        Also joining Elam on his excursion into Deep Blues is "Hypnotic" Casey Lutton, a Nashville Blues veteran and former member of the Hypnotics. "Casey holds court over a Monday night jam that I began attending and he is one of the major reasons this album was even made. The guys (Casey, Steve Johnson-drums, and Michael Thorn-bass) knew I was trying to record an album and Casey said `let us be your backup band.' I was more than happy to oblige." Also included are Ronnie Godfrey (piano and keys) and Zach Reynolds (Harmonica). "Both Ronnie and Zach are like hot sauce over an already good plate of food."

        All but two of Braid My Hair's tracks were written by McKnight and the album is like a classic car with all the added features, built for comfort and speed. "We run the gambit. You have Delta like Braid My Hair and Terraplane Blues (Robert Johnson), Soul with Sugar Cane, Hill Country Stomp with Crying Shame, Miss Maureen, and Three Legged Dog. Then you have some Roots acoustic numbers like Bob Zarecor Blues (a song about Elam's Grandfather), Devil Got Religion and alternate versions of Miss Maureen and Three Legged Dog. I wanted to make an album I would like to listen to. One that has all the bells and whistles."

          This group is a hot group. If you have not heard this CD you need to add this to your gospel collection. It has a tradtional, jazz, a little hip hop sound to it. One song even has a Smoky Robinson voice in it. Please check it out!!!!!!!
