Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns, and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars Great NFL Theme Music.......2007-07-05

The NFL off-season seems to last forever, but this can help. It is great music, fun to listen to, and a great way to pass the time. Don't be surprised if you find it as much fun as the NFL Films themselves. Also, great listening for exercise or driving.

5 out of 5 stars Time travel to the "Voice" and NFL greatness........2007-05-18

This is the greatest CD I ever bought. I feel like I have entered into a time machine and traveled back to the 70's and 80's when these films were still on TV. It reminds me of watching and listening to the great players like Ken "the Snake" Stabler QB of the LA Raiders, Gayle Sayres of the Chicago Bears, Bart Starr, and of course "Mean" Joe Greene. And of course this would be nothing without the commentary of the "Voice" John Facenda and the great music.

3 out of 5 stars Some good numbers.......2007-04-07

A bit like Dick Dale would do, these songs are largely variations or altered renditions of existing songs. Even so, one can't help but see the wide shots at the snap of the ball to the sounds of Ramblin Man from Gramblin. One can't help but see the coach carried off by the SB winners when listening to The Raiders, even if it was not the Raiders. In fact, I think Raiders fans often know this particular tune.

Other than that, there are some good numbers mixed in with audio clips. But it's somewhat inconsistent. And I wonder if some numbers that might have been more interesting were not included. I don't know. I like to think, that is, that I can put together an interesting 'mix tape'. I often wonder about those putting together 'greatest hits' albums, though. What have they left out that should be there?

5 out of 5 stars ahhh Football even during the Summer.......2007-03-15

personally i am a huge fanatic of football, be it HS, NCAA and the NFL!!!

this is a must for any football nut who spends hours on the NFL network, website, team sites etc!!!

relatively inexpensive this will make most football fans smile!!!

great Father's Day gift, B-Day or Christmas gift!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This will fire you up.......2007-01-30

Nothing can generate the feel of excitement that you get at the stadium unless you are actually there, but this CD brings you pretty close. It is particularly helpful if you have a team that is not doing too hot because the music can, at the very least, get your juices flowing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best!.......2006-05-12

I can't believe those that rated this album with 1 or 2 stars. This was, and is, definitely one of the best Metal albums of all time. I remember when the album originally came out. It was viewed as Saxon's best. I actually had the opportunity to see Saxon after this album came out. They were incredible. It's ashame that they never received the recognition they deserved.

For true Metal fans, get this album! It should defintely be in your collection if you appreciate original 80's Heavy Metal and not some water downed version of it.

4 out of 5 stars Saxon - 'Power & The Glory' (EMI Import).......2006-05-09

Originally released in 1983,as 'Power...' was Saxon's sixth lp.No idea as to why there are several one-star reviews here by others.I remember this record being considered to be somewhat of an under rated classic back in the day when 'metal DID more or less rule'.Noticed that drummer Nigel Glockler had just joined the band.Tunes that I truly miss hearing on a semi-regular basis are the powerful title track "Power&The Glory"(VH1 Classic should play that video sometime),their anthem(sort of)"This Town Rocks","Watching The Sky" and "The Eagle Has Landed".Prime '80's top of the line British metal to be had here.Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars QUESTION - ALL SAXON FANS . . . ........2006-03-09

Hey guys, the cassette version of this release had the song "Suzi Hold On" and the CD has "Midas Touch". "Suzi Hold On" appears on an earlier Saxon release (WHEELS OF STEEL), but the version on the POWER & THE GLORY is far superior. Can ANYONE tell me where to find the POWER & THE GLORY version of "Suzi Hold On" on CD?

OK, now for the review . . .

I LOVE the title track "Power And The Glory" - fast riffs and some great drumming. It sould similar to DIO's "Stand Up And Shout", if you've ever heard it. "This Town Rocks" is another fast-paced, hard rocker.

Saxon has had some interesting lyrical content throughout their career. They seemed to take a cue from Iron Maiden for topics like vikings ("Warrior") and fighting and war ("Power And The Glory"). We've also got the standard metal topics of motorcycles ("Redline") and crowd pleasers ("This Town Rocks") - themes we've seen on earlier Saxon releases that will perpetuate in later releases.

Nigel Glockler makes his drummer debut here - and he is GOOD. The talent base for the band is good - maybe not quite up to Judas Priest or Iron Maiden level, but these guys wrote great songs and they play their metal hearts out for their fans. It's a shame they were not appreciated in the USA the way they were in their native England because they have a lot to offer the metal world. I have most of their CD's and all are in the 4 and 5 star range. Don't miss out on these guys. If you are new to SAXON, begin with POWER & THE GLORY, DENIM AND LEATHER, and INNOCENCE IS NO EXCUSE.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and Glorious.......2005-11-03

I do not own this import CD but the original vinyl picture disc. I am not a Saxon fanatic but I know what I like and "The Power and the Glory" album was the pinnacle for the group in my opinion. Each track has real depth and individuality and makes the whole album engaging from start to finish. Shake your head and play that air guitar or drums and wear a big smile.

2 out of 5 stars "caught in a nightmare".......2005-07-13

Once I finally discovered Saxon, I started searching for their back catalogue of albums. With each album I found, I started liking the band more and more. I was certain this 1983 release would continue this trend. It appeared, at first, that it would live up to my expectations. The title track is amazing! The 5:53 anthem has excellent warrior lyrics and, musically, is up there with the best of power metal. "Redline," with its squeaky guitar opening, is a typical Saxon motorcycle song. It is not stellar but good . So far, things seem right on track towards another excellent Saxon album.

Things begin to taper off some with "Suzi Hold On." It is sappy and pop-sounding, though not as sickening as "Waiting for the Night" off Rock the Nations. Still, it is not a high point. This version offers a track entitled "Midas Touch" instead of "Suzi" and, from the audio clip above, it seems like a much better song, but I am basing my review and grade on the tracks I have on my version. "Nightmare," musically, is good but the lyrics really detract from the song. A grown man singing "I'm afraid of the night" is just silly plus the "Where were you" part is syrupy. Hopefully, things will improve with the second half of the album.

Unfortunately, the second half begins with "This Town Rocks" which is a new low. Usually Saxon writes excellent odes to rock and roll ("Denim and Leather," "Rock the Nations," "We Came Here to Rock"), but this one is not one of them. The chorus "This town knows how to rock" is embarrassing. I rush to the player to skip this track. The next number, "Warrior," is my favorite on side two and, next to the title track, is the only other real stand-out. It is fast and furious track with solid vocals and lyrics. "Watching the Sky" is OK at best. It has a memorable, catchy chorus although it is a bit sappy. The 7:00 epic "The Eagle Has Landed" seemed like it would end the album on a stellar note. With a title like that, how could you miss? Well, it surprisingly falls flat. It starts with a long instrumental opening that drags. The meat of the song is excellent with a celestial guitar riff and vocals that launch into some power chords. Unfortunately, it doesn't last. The guitar solo seems unoriginal and just fades. It is a let-down. It is an interesting track in places, but is drawn-out with no real climax.

I really like Saxon but Power and the Glory, as a whole, is only average and, for this band, way below average. It offers two killer tracks, but that is far less than I have expected from a Saxon album.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! Get all their albums!.......2006-10-26

I own just about all of Hammerfall's albums -- they're all great. I started out with Crimson Thunder (specifically Hero's Return) which I think is one of their better albums so if you're looking to start on one, that's a great choice. With that said, there's nothing wrong with Glory to the Brave. All of Hamemrfall's albums in my opinion will please a metal fan or even a skeptic. Come in with an open mind and if you have an appreciation for medieval/epic themes then you'll quickly fall in love with them as I did. To people who mentioned their grammatical errors in the lyrics -- please have some consideration. They are from Sweden and I find their English to be better than some of my friends'. In fact, I don't think I even notice any errors because I'm so focused on the music (which is what should be focused upon). Please don't comment on someone elses 2nd language because most Americans, myself included, can barely speak theirs.

Again -- Hammerfall is a great band. They revived the genre and set a new precedent for epic/power metal with intriguing medieval themes. Get all of their albums -- open minded curiosity will pay off.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Power Metal.......2006-07-28

I ordered this album, and received the Deluxe Edition (a nice bonus!) It includes the bonus track "Ravenlord" which is a great song, and enhanced features: the music video of Glory To The Brave and desktop wallpaper. Maybe I just lucked out in getting it. Regardless of Deluxe or not, this album is great. It definitely grew on me as well, so give it some time (especially if you're new to power metal). I also strongly recommend Legacy of Kings.

Also, "Child of the Damned" is actually a cover song! (something most fans don't know). The original was recorded by an obscure band named "Warlord." Check them out, they're very cool. They, along with bands like Helloween were big influences on HammerFall.

Let The Hammer Fall!

3 out of 5 stars Good heavy metal.......2006-06-27

Hammerfall is one of the best modern metal bands around today. Most of the other modern so called "metal" bands are nothing but screaming crap. Hammerfall took the best parts of 80's metal and solidified it together with an updated sound. They have a lot of skill and talent. Their songs are powerful and heavy and yet actually have melody that you can follow. You can hear and understand all the words. But again, they are extremely powerful and heavy. They have a constant Middle Age theme running through all their albums which is what makes them unique. It creates a certain mood and flow that connects all the songs on an album.

Now about rating their albums...all 5 of their albums rock! But the last 4 are better than the first. Their first is good heavy metal, much better than most metal bands today, but the songs did not completely "click" and come together. However, that issue was completely gone by the second album! None of their next 4 albums are better than the other. They all are as good as heavy power metal with melodic vocals can get. On each album they further develop their style and introduce a few new things. But... and a very important but... each album still sounds like Hammerfall! They remain true to their sound. So here are the ratings:
3.5 Glory to the Brave
5.0 Legacy Of Kings
5.0 Renegade
5.0 Crimson Thunder
5.0 Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken

5 out of 5 stars HammerFall!!!.......2006-06-02

Hammerfall is an awsome metal band - blending the typical power metal fantasy topics with some speed metal as well - doesn't that go for a lot of power metal bands? Well, this is a must have for power metal fans. If you can, get the Nuclear Blast deluxe edition with a bonus track and a few extra media on it. I really recomment this CD.

If you're into Hammerfall, you might wanna check out Blind Guardian, Dragonforce, and Manowar.

5 out of 5 stars Bigotry does not constitute a review, people........2006-03-03

This review is in response to the EXTREMELY ETHNOCENTRIC AND BIGOTED people who are mocking and making fun of this band's grasp of the English language. Do you not know that English is not their native tongue (and if you do know and are still making fun, shame on you!) as they are from Sweden and making fun of people's "broken English" does not constitute a proper review of a band. If you do not like their music, that is perfectly acceptable but please do not make fun of the way they speak, as I know many Americans who have an even worse grasp of this language. The reason this band sounds silly to you, I'm sure is the fact that they make minor grammatical errors in their lyrics, but again how many American bands do this AND THEY'RE FROM THIS COUNTRY!!!!!!! So please let's stick to the reviews of their music and forgo picking apart their lingual skills, ok? Not to mention, how well do speak your second language, if you have one anyway?

This is my first time listening to these songs, and I love them. Even if you're not a Gentle Giant fan, give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars I'm "So Sincere" when I say 5 stars!.......2007-06-01

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often asked for my views on various rock and roll albums from the 60's and 70's.

When it comes to Gentle Giant it is a pleasure to write about them. I have been collecting every release for over three decades.

"The Power And The Glory" is a journey of various sounds and tempos that come out exactly the way a Gentle Giant album is planed and that is PERFECTLY!

The diversification of the catchy riff to Playing The Game followed by the intense ride of Cogs and Cogs are examples why Gentle Giant didn't adhere to the rules. They could blend the rock and the ballad and somehow land properly.

Not only is there tremendous consistency here but you get the important studio bonus track "The Power And The Glory" which was not on the original vinyl LP.

Any Gentle Giant recording from the first album through Free Hand and if you want to put Interview in there as well please do, is a must have. A great band that should have been appreciated more. For those that know a Giant we have never taken it for granted.

If you have enjoyed the sounds of Gentle Giant over the years but would not consider yourself a true believer you can be convinced with four listenings to "The Power And The Glory." On the first one play the CD straight through without any interruption. The On the second review listen to the vocals of Derek Shulman. No other singer sounds like him and no other could take his place in the band. For listen number three concentrate on the keyboard-player Kerry Minnear. His brilliance will consume your thoughts and you will be impressed how well he picks his spots to shine. For the forth and final time you open the CD player have the ears focus on the guitar of Gary Green. Another superlative musician that doesn't overplay but can sparkle when the passage calls for it.

Be well always,
Craig Fenton
Author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent"

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the title song.......2006-11-12

I knew it existed but never heard it. And it's quite understandable why it was never included in the original album. It would have spoiled it. It's totally against the grain. It's too exuberant. It rather belongs to Giant for a Day, although it has its bright moments like the little guitar solo.
The entire album gets 5 stars. Good quality at a good price.

5 out of 5 stars incredible!!!!.......2006-08-14

for their sixth album, gentle giant left behind the moodiness of in a glass house and rocked this thing out. as strange as the songs are at times, they have such inertia that i recommend this (or free hand) as a good starting place to those who have not yet lived life to the fullest and consumed this wonderful band. fans of yes, genesis, ELP or king crimson should understand this complex universe spun by the mighty gentle giant.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant study in counterpoint .......2006-02-06

This music is simply astounding. Period. The complexity of their counterpoint is astonishing, the harmonic syntax is out of this world, metric complexity is mind-numbing, and to top it all off these guys actually make it swing... well sort of. This 1974 release is a personal favorite (I actually have too many favorite GG albums) because the overall approach seems softened somewhat, while retaining the trademark Gentle Giant complexity. Whether this was related to the subject matter of the album (power and inherent corruption) is unclear. What is clear is that it works and works very well. The softer pieces such as Aspirations and No God's a Man are simply wonderful, while the harder edged closing track Valedictory provides a breathtaking dynamic contrast. My favorite tracks include the quieter pieces along with Proclamation, Playing the Game, and Cogs in Cogs although every track is generally excellent. The remastering of the album is just OK and features restored cover art (the insert is shaped like a playing card), lyrics, two bonus tracks and decent sound quality. With respect to the bonus tracks, the sound quality of the live performance of Proclamation (taken from a 1974 German television concert) is OK, although it has a "bootleg" quality to it, while the studio outtake The Power and the Glory is only of middling quality. Although I generally liked the total remastered package, my only wish is that DRT had included at least a few photos of the band, and perhaps some notes regarding the recording process or other historical tidbits. All in all, this is an incredible recording of progressive rock and is highly recommended along with all of their albums up to and including In'terview (1976).

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2007-06-26

I accidentally purchased a copy of this record on vinyl at a Goodwill store a few years ago along with a stack of other classical albums. It sat idly next to my record player for some months before I played it and was stricken with utter awe and humility for the compositional prowess of Gabrieli. The sweeping, tall, broad cinematic sound of his writing are astounding for his day. This is a must-have recording for all who call themselves human.

I am overjoyed at its release on CD, as the sound quality is GREATLY improved, and the CD contains almost twice as much material as the original LP release in 1968.

5 out of 5 stars E.Power and Giovanni.......2007-05-10

I also(too many years ago) had/have a vinyl copy of this performance and was absolutely carried away by the music. The digital re-mastering in this particular edition has been well done and fully captures that wonderful, distinctive, Venetian sound. Sure, the rendering is somewhat dated and ole' E. Power took some liberties with the instrumentation including the substitution of modern trumpets in some places for the original cornetti which have a much more mellow tone. I am sure, however, that Gabrieli would have done the same had a version of the modern trumpet been available. I would have liked most of the canzonas to have been all brass, and the substitution of strings for the higher brass in some of the choral works in my opinion is disappointing. I also wish that Biggs had been more forceful with the lower end of the brass (as in Paul McCreesh's "A Venetian Coronation 1595"). A little less dominant organ would have been nice, but hey, Giovanni WAS the organist at San Marco/St. Marks(if I remember correctly), and may have wanted that kind of emphasis. In any event, I give the performance an A+ for Biggs' pioneering effort and suspect that in spite of any supposed flaws, Giovanni would heartily approve the result! All in all, a superb recording.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible recording.......2007-03-21

Years ago I purchased this on a vinal record and was taken away by its incredible sound.... In its present CD it is even better than I remember. Having visited St. Mark's Basilica and seeing the actual place where the music was written for and hearing one of the only recordings ever made there in that magnificent space still inspires me.

This is a must for any one who enjoys renaissance polyphony.

5 out of 5 stars All I expected.......2007-01-14

While some reviewers noted its being a bit dated, I found the sound on a good system all I expected: Gabrieli on his own stage!

5 out of 5 stars CD of a classic LP.......2007-01-05

I purchased the LP recording back in the early 1970's and had been casually looking for a CD of this for a long time. The acoustics of San Marco are wonderful. Sony released an earlier set of Gabrieli choral works under the "Essential Classics" title with material that isn't nearly as good as what is on this CD.

Album Description

In a declaration of war against its critics and the conservative-minded music industry and as a vow of honour to their fans and their music, the members of Manowar inked their second recording contract in their own blood for the release of Into Glory Ride. The band's second album has shown further development, particularly in terms of the songwriting, which has already become more epic compared with their debut. The album contains some undoubted Manowar classics such as Gates Of Valhalla, Secret Of Steel, Revelation (Death's Angel) and March of Revenge (By The Soldiers Of Death). This epic album of monumental proportions also heralded the arrival of Scott Columbus, later known as the "Drummer of Doom".

As a special bonus, the digi pack Silver Edition features a 16-pages booklet with new and rare photos, interviews with the band members (and others) plus lyrics and liner notes. In addition to this, the album has been digitally remastered using the original studio mastertapes.

5 out of 5 stars manowar,into glory ride.......2006-10-23

manowar with there death to false metal slogan were definately on a crusade ,as always doing there own thing- being original,it was a time when thrash just started and was super popular, manowar went against the grain to seperate themselves from the pack, slower more grinding musically ,it heralded the coming of drums of doom scott columbus ,heavy hitting taken to the next level for its time, eric adams taking his vocals to where no man has gone or been to before, ross the boss the most under rated guitarist in metal-classy melodic soloing on every song ,every solo very distinct and memorable, and joey demaio using his original and unique sounding bass to roundup the soundscape, these recordings have bridged the gap between metal and classical music, this kind of started that viking metal genre.manowar showing why they are huge in europe and one of the most enduring and important metal acts of all time.into glory ride,it was great than and its still great today, true metalers wont be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Metal de los 80'.......2006-06-30

5 out of 5 stars my first introduction to the kings of metal!1.......2005-12-21

I am very dissapointed because i only read one reviewers review on this great epic album.Anyway,I first heard this record way back in 85 while my friend give me a copy of Metallica Ride the lightning in a C-60 tape, he recorded on the last few minutes of the tape 3 songs from manowar " into the glory ride ". I am a great fan of metallica, but I been blown away by manowar's unique sound and i'm hooked.all my friends are into metallica at that time but only i remain a loyal fan of Manowar for 20 years until now. This album serves as my all time favorite Manowar album. All Hail!!!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge an Album by it's Cover.......2005-09-13

You know, as much of a die hard Manowar fan as I am, and trust me, I listen to Manowar EVERY day, I laugh each and every time I see this album cover. Like Kiss meets Conan the Barbarian! And when I bought this album for the first time as Geffen records import, I thought that I was going to be greatly dissapointed. Most sophmore efforts can be after all. However, I hit play and sat back and braced myself for the worst. Starting out like an audio from a z-grade skin flick, it quickly picks up at the same tempo as the first album "Battle Hymns" with the song 'Warlord', a possble continuation of 'Death Tone'. As we move on in the album though, things get slower and more brooding. This is also the debut of their new drummer Scott Columbus. As I said, this album does slow things down a bit, but musically is quite elaborate. Apparently most of these songs were recorded in one-take sessions, genuinely giving it a "live in the studio" feel. With the exception of the first track, this whole album is themed in the days of warriors, wizards, demons and battle. And Scott's drumming is aptly suitable for this with the galloping rythms on 'Gloves of Metal' and 'Gates of Valhalla'. The former being a fantastic example of the classic rock abilities of guitarist Ross "The Boss" and the near operatic vocal abilities of singer Eric Adams. Joey DeMaio's bass playing is simply heavy and dark with flashes akin to Spanish Flamenco guitar style, as evidenced on the second track 'Secret of Steel'. The song 'Hatred' is one of those songs that sometimes I'm in the mood for, sometimes I'm not. Again, a long, slow, dark ode to hate with a long instrumental break in the middle, that returns to vows of destruction and ending in a speeding frenzy before blowing out to the winds. The song that follows is for me all the justification one needs for buying this. 'Revelation' has it all. The pounding of drums like hooves of horses, the ever escalating rythms of the guitar and bass with fantastically classic solo breaks, and of course the vocals that soar higher and higher and higher......... and then all clears the top of the mountain to come bearing down hard giving no sign of remorse. The ending song 'March for Revenge' is the longest of all of these lengthy tracks, clocking in at 8min. 29sec. Once again, this is a story song that would be retold a few more times on later albums with more refinement.
In all, not a bad album but a bit much for most who like simple, pointless thrash songs that have more in terms of speed that they certainly do in true musical ability. One must have true appreciation, and moreover knowledge, of what ability is in this music to enjoy this album. In other words, if you are impressed with three string power chords being hammered on to death and unintelligable lyrcs screamed repeatedly, you will not like this album.

Amazon.com

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Heavy-handed stuff here.......2004-03-04

Again, I think altissimo! is going over the top here with the raw patriotism bit. Sure we should be proud of this country, but there does reach a point where it becomes too much and is embarrassing. That point is reached here with this mixed bag of recordings pulled in from over the place, many already released from Altissimo! before and just re-packaged here. If you don't mind patriotism served with a lot of relish then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring..........2003-11-07

It might not be everyone's cup of tea but One Nation Under God is a beautiful ode to patriotism and the United States of America. There isn't a clunker in the 20 songs on the album, not surprising considering you get things like Nearer My God to Thee, God Bless America or Amazing Grace. A fantastic job by the various military bands who contributed to this effort!

5 out of 5 stars One nation Under God.......2003-10-30

"One Nation Under God" is a great compilation of inspirational patriotic music, superbly performed by truly world-class musicians.
The selection of music was excellent, and very much in keeping with the title and the theme of the album. The opening recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Thompson, underscored by a most respectful and reverent lead-in to "God of Our Fathers", perfectly set the stage for the well-appointed and majestically performed music that followed.

Several pieces evoked solemn contemplation and reverence, leading to others of pride, majesty and tribute, all arranged and played with proper respect and appropriate to the theme "One Nation Under God".
This is a magnificent and timeless album that will hold a prominent spot in my collection, and be often enjoyed.

5 out of 5 stars One Nation Under God.......2003-09-25

This CD is absolutely awesome ! From the opening of God of our Fathers with the Pledge of Allegiance by Senator Fred Thompson to the final note of Taps, I could not stop listening. This collection of patriotic and inspirational music is a must for all Americans. As an ex-Navy man and Viet Nam veteran, the strains of The Navy Hymn sent chills up and down my spine. It brought back so many precious memories. This collection of 20 songs is a bargain at any price !

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection!! Patriotic Music all on one CD !!!.......2003-09-24

This CD is definately for people who are looking to get some uplifting patriotic music for listening to at home, the office, for parades, barbecues, and ecspecially holidays like the 4th of July. Its got all of America's greatest hits including "The Star Spangled Banner", "Amazing Grace", "America The Beautiful", along with other less well known gems such as "Godspeed", and "Pslam for Band". All of the songs are played excellently by the US Marine, Navy, and Air Force bands. The label that put out this release, Altissimo Records actually specializes in military music, so if you like this check our their other releases. Overall Highly Recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sousa Via the Royal Artillery!.......2004-11-28

This is promising new series. Keith Brian, known for his spirited versions of Sousa with his New Sousa Band leads here the reknowned band of the Royal Regiment of Artillery from the UK. As the premiere band of the British army, tracing its history back to 1747, this full-sized 49 member band can give Sousa the full power he needs! While many marches are well known, this series promises to explore the lesser known as well. Included are many obscure marches, as well as novelty pieces, hymns, dances, etc. All go to show what a truly versatile composer Sousa was. He deserves to be better known. His music spanned many aspects, and it is quite possible to program a complete band concert on his varied works alone. Naxos deserves much credit for launching this inspired project to record has many varied works. The sound quality for such a budget price is truly great. Hats off to Keith Brian, the band of the Royal Artillery, and Naxos!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of great concert band music for a little money!.......2001-10-22

This is a great recording if you enjoy concert band music and/or Sousa! I especially enjoyed hearing the lesser-known marches and non-marches - Sousa wrote suites, operettas, and more, and they are all very enjoyable. All of these are well-performed and recorded and will have you tapping your foot. A wonderful and inexpensive series (see Volume 2, too!).

I originally purchased this CD for the track "White Rose March" because I absolutely love that song, but couldn't find it anywhere else. However, when I received the CD and began listening to it, I discovered a bunch of new Sousa songs that are awesome! I recommend this for any Sousa fan, but not if you're just getting into his music, because it doesn't have this most famous tunes (or greatest hits, if you will)--it contains more of the underplayed ones (like White Rose!) But definitely a good buy!

5 out of 5 stars Best Sousa recording out there.......2005-09-10

This CD is not mid-range quality but the best buy out there. The performances are excellent and the recording quality very good; the band playing to a very appreciative audience.

I've many CDs of Sousa, including the other 3 Sousa Originals and some top-class performances by the Eastman Wind Ensemble (directed by Frederick Fennell)on Mercury and the Royal Marines Band (conducted by GAC Hoskins)on the EMI label but Sousa 4 is my favorite. If looking to start a collection again I wouldn't buy the Sousa Original box set, preferring to get Sousa 4, the Fennell and Hoskins recordings for a comprehensive range of interpretations(the other 3 Originals are very good by any standard but I think the Fennell and Hoskins better).

There's so many Sousa albums out there, many of them poor, that you can be picky, and Sousa 4 is the one to pick first.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-Line Sousa Quality.......2004-03-04

One of the slightly better Altissimo! titles on Sousa. Here we have a series of live recordings taken from Marine band tours. The sound quality is a bit off at times, but overall they sound good. For a change Altissimo! has provided a few liner notes, something they were too cheap to do before. The length of the CD is close to an hour, a bit better than the 45 min. quickies these guys usually put out. Still over-priced for what you git, but probably the best in the Sousa series from Altissimo! I think I would still go with the Naxos series on Sousa.
