Good Introduction.......2007-02-16
As might be expected with a compilation, this is a little inconsistent. It also lacks the more swinging tracks they recorded with a jazz rhythym section, but it's still a great and very inexpensive introduction to this great a cappella group, who were a staple of movie soundtracks in the 60's.

This record is simply some of the best Christmas music ever and I love Christmas music. As I said it is hauntingly beautiful and is best on a really great sound system.
Christmas past... Christmas perfect.......2005-12-02
The harmonies, the musicianship, the intonation, the arrangements, the song selection... this is a capella Christmas perfection. 'Christmas' combines familiar songs with less-oft heard carols by Alfred Burt, a refreshing departure from other Christmas music discs. Gene Puerling's beautiful arrangements artfully showcase the voices of Bonnie Herman, Don Shelton, Puerling, and Len Dresslar. Your Christmas music collection will remain tragically incomplete if you don't own this disc!
Happy Memories.......2005-07-27
I first heard this album on reel to reel at the Guernsey home of my friend Dave Farnon, son of the late great Robert Farnon. What a privilege to hear such fine musicians singing such wonderful arrangements.
I was so happy to find that it was still available. This album is satisfying on so many levels, musical and above all, spiritual.
The Most Beautiful Recording Ever Made.......2003-10-17
I first heard of the Singers Unlimited in 1973 (In Tune With Oscar Peterson was my first encounter with them) and knew that the incomparable Hi-Los were the predecesser of this group. Within a couple of months I heard portions of the Christmas album, but it was a couple of years before I finally acquired it. Having listened to it now for 28 years, I can honestly say that it is simply the most beautiful recording I have ever heard. Not just of Christmas music, but of any kind. The harmonies are just incredible and the voices and the phrasing are perfect. One should listen to this album with absolutely no distractions in order to be able to hear each note of each chord. Although Gene Puerling wrote only four of the arrangements, every single one of the 17 is a gem. For anyone who wants to hear the ultimate beauty that music can offer, this cd is a must. One more little thing. I am Jewish.
Christmas All Year Long.......2003-01-18
These talented artists, led by the gifted arrangements of Gene Peurling are not just for the Yule season. I have the windows down and volume up during the dog days of August. Without a doubt a classic for all time. How I wish my musical talents went beyond just playing the radio. My ears are thrilled at the magic of this magnificent group.

Although Dan Peek left America in 1976, the remaining members--Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley--recapture the magic that put the folk rock trio atop the charts 25 years ago on Holiday Harmony, their first Christmas album. Much of the credit must go to seminal 1970s figure Andrew Gold, who not only produced and engineered the record, but played all the instruments (save Beckley's and Bunnell's guitars) and added his own soaring background vocals to the 13 songs. Gold also cowrote "Christmas in California," one of the three originals on the disc, which, with its tight harmonies and breezy subject matter, could have been lifted off The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. In an unusual twist for a holiday album, America's newly penned songs are the best tunes on the collection. Beckley and Bunnell haven't lost their chemistry and homespun imagination, conjuring images of Yuletides past on the excellent "Christmas to Remember" and the witty "Winter Holidays." When the duo cover Christmas classics, they seem to bend them to their will, adding background harmonies on "Winter Wonderland" that recall the ones they used on "A Horse with No Name." On their version of "White Christmas," Beckley and Bunnell incorporate the melody line from "Tin Man," with surprisingly good results. --Jaan Uhelszki

These guys are just so darn talented it is hard for me to express in words. They not only do justice to the standards BUT add three NEW songs of their own. All three AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Very visual songs...Makes me want to go out and buy a tree in May and get a cup of hot Chocolate and decorate. best album since "The Carpenters" A Christmas Portrait.

An enjoyable Christmas offering.......2005-11-18
Remember the seventies, when the charts were filled with classic songs such as Horse with no name? Now we have a Christmas album from the duo who had that international hit (though they were then a trio) featuring ten familiar Christmas songs and three new songs. With Andrew Gold (another name from the seventies) as producer and multi-instrumentalist, fans of seventies pop music will enjoy this. The set opens with Winter wonderland, which even reminds us of their biggest hit with its arrangement. Other tracks here also provide reminders of their seventies hits.
The group sticks to the festive side of Christmas for the first eleven tracks then rounds off the album with Silent night and First Noel. All the other oldies have been recorded countless times except one (It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas) that is under-exposed. Of the original songs, my favorite is A Christmas to remember but the others (Christmas in California, Winter holidays) are also worth a listen.
If you enjoy America's seventies classic hits as I do, you will love this album.

this album combines two things i have loved for a very long time: Christmas music and the incredible voices of "America!" if you are an "America" fan, you should consider adding this to your holiday music collection.

I have to say I am somewhat surprised to say this is a great album! America covers the holiday classics with their own unique touch and wrote three new songs that range from very good to excellent. They have never sounded better. This is a must purchase for any America fan and I recommend it to others as well. If hearing the backbeat to Tin Man during the start of White Christmas enhances your enjoyment rather than detracts, this will quickly become your all-time favorite holiday CD.

Best Arrangement of Silent Night Ever !.......2002-12-27
I know I am preaching to the choir of any SS fans who are reading this, but the arrangement of Silent Night on this CD is simply the best I've heard. Each voice of the Octet is not only pitch perfect, but also at the right volume level. It's a joy to listen to, especially on the whole notes realizing that no one voice is dominating.
Timeless yet fresh: New dimensions of classics.......2000-11-27
The singing is clear and precise -- and it has to be, because these arrangements are full of innovative and challenging harmonies, especially "The Boar's Head Carol" and "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel." It's all pretty, but it's not wallpaper music; your attention is rewarded, and you will keep noticing new aspects of familiar old tunes. There are also a couple of songs that were new to me: "And Is It True" and "I Believe in Father Christmas." Both have modern, sensitive texts that are worth thinking about (not just more sentimental drivel). The performances are sharp -- one thing I always appreciate about the Swingles is their balance. The melody is always there, and the rest of the (a cappella) accompaniment is perfectly distinguished. The renditions are sometimes bouncy ("We Three Kings") but always elegant.
If you are familiar with this group only from their old "doo be doo" days, know that this album is different. They sing the words. However, I dearly wish someone would have the sense to re-issue (on CD) their doo-be-doo Christmas album of carols from around the world, recorded in the 1970s. It was a stunningly arranged gem, with tons of lovely, less-familiar tunes.

I have a tendancy to get sick of Christmas music, but this is the one CD I listen to all season. I get caught singing along, I'm not very good, hence why I get caught, but I love it!

I heard "Snowfall" on the radio, knew it was Manhattan Transfer, and that's all it took for me! Put on the song, and your mind will drift to winter, no matter what time of year it is. A good collection of music. Their harmonies are as clear and crisp as ever. Good job. Five stars!!

I've given this beautiful Christmas music CD to family and friends. It's always amazing and thrilling to listen to "Manhattan Transfer" harmonize as only they can.
A great Christmas album.......2006-12-16
I bought this CD when it was first released back in 1992. I thought it was one of the best Christmas albums then, and I think it still is today. Actually, this is a collection of Christmas songs, with two exceptions--more about those in a minute. The Christmas songs go from solemn to swinging--with the Transfer's voices, either singly or blended (as they do so well) performing flawlessly, buoyed by Johnny Mandel's meticulous arrangements. As great as the Christmas songs are, though, the best two tunes on the album are the "non-Christmas" songs. "Snowfall," the simple, yet delightful Claude Thornhill compostiion, is one of my favorite tunes of the swing era. By its name, it has tended to become associated with the Christmas season, but it's not really a Christmas song and is a great tune anytime. The ManTran do a superb cover of it here, and Mandel's arrangement is stellar. The other tune is "Goodnight," an almost forgotten lullaby composed by Paul McCartney and recorded on the Beatles' "White Cover" album. Quite frankly, it WAS pretty forgettable as the Beatles recorded it, but the ManTran turn it into a work of vocal art here. The childs' voices (children of the Manhattan Transfer members) are a little distracting at the end of the tune, but, hey, they are the performers' kids and it IS Christmastime.
Over the years, there have been some abysmal recordings released of Christmas songs. This is definitely NOT one of those. Back in '92, the Manhattan Transfer got it right, and it's still one of the best albums of Christmas music that you can find. Even my "non-jazz-loving" friends love this album.
Great Music Anytime of Year.......2006-11-20
This collection by the Manhattan Transfer is one of the greatest collections of swinging Christmas music ever produced. The group never sounded better and the music is listenable all year long. Pop it in the CD during one of summer's "dog days" and you're instantly transported to a better place and time. When they first came out I gave them as gifts to family and friends and the reaction was unanimous: in a word, Outstanding!!

These guys outdid themselves with this very special, all-time Christmas album. Their unique style is especially appropriate for the Christmas season.

I wish I had taken Bobbbb's review to heart before I bought this album. I agree wholeheartedly that, while this isn't bad, and may be something different to those unacustomed to a capella groups, it is NOT the innovative sounds of the Nylons when they were the original group. I'm a big fan of their early work, but anything from the 90's on just is not the Nylons. I was very disappointed in this album, and I'll be playing my "Rockapella Christmas" album by the group Rockapella over and over again instead of this one. Rockapella has the spark and the fun that the Nylons used to have, in spades.
Best Christmas CD.......2004-12-03
I love the Nylons, and when I discovered this CD, I was no less impressed with it. My favorite Christmas song through the years has been "little Drummer Boy", and the Nylons sing it better than any one else I've heard so far. I also love "Carol of the Bells", and "Secret of Christmas". This is the one Christmas CD I can't wait to listen to, and usually start the day after Thanksgiving. As a matter of fact, I recently moved and my CD is in a box somewhere. After several days of searching with no results, I decided I'll just have to buy another one. I couldn't go without listening to the Nylons even for one year!

If you want a CD of very ordinary, though pleasant Christmas music done in a basically elevator-music style, you may like this album. If you love the Nylons, as you are accustomed to hearing them on albums such as One Size Fits All, you'll wonder who the heck is singing. Only Carol of the Bells is actually done as the Nylons do what they do; the rest are very generic, stereotypical light-jazz treatments with lots of over-sweetened strings in the backgrounds. The accapella work and sense of rhthym and excitement that make the Nylons so wonderful are missing, except for Carol of the Bells.
My Favorite Christmas CD.......2003-12-27
I rec'd this as a gift several years ago. Every winter I look forward to listening to the entire CD several times. The voices are superb. "Carol of the Bells" is entrancing (close your eyes, lay back and enjoy the song). I never heard of the Nylons before this gift, and what a joyous gift this has become for me. The tracks takes you from old-time standard carols to modern tunes. They're sung respectfully and almost with reverence ("What Does Chreistmas Mean to Me").

Talk about a Christmas fantasy come true for our girl Rosie! The big-mouthed comedian and popular talk-show host gets to sing with some of the biggest names in the music industry, from the pop divas Cher, Celine Dion, Lauryn Hill, and Elton John to cartoon superstars Elmo (Sesame Street) and Angelica Pickle (Rugrats). In between there's Billy Joel, Donny Osmond, Rosemary Clooney, Savage Garden's Darren Hayes, 'N Sync, country-rocker Trisha Yearwood, Gloria Estefan (doing one of the funnier numbers, "Gonna Eat for Christmas"), and Billy Porter's solo version of "O Holy Night." Although O'Donnell sometimes gets lost in the mix (who wouldn't with this daunting talent lineup?), she's usually at her warbled best with the folks she can cut up with the most: Pickles, Osmond, Estefan, and Clooney. With arrangements that embrace mainstream pop, Dixieland swing, country, and R&B/hip-hop, O'Donnell and company have more fun than a bunch of professionals should legally be allowed to have in one place--and all for a good cause: proceeds benefit the For All Kids Foundation. --Martin Keller

Who in their right mind told her she could sing? All she can do is tell dirty jokes and talk a lot - A LOT!!
Thank goodness it is a CD and not a DVD! That way, I don't have to look at her......
Billy Porter shines on this CD.......2004-12-18
If not for one outstanding performance, this would be merely a "good" Christmas album. To be certain, there are many very good performances. I particularly enjoyed Celine Dion's The Magic of Christmas (can't get the tune out of my head), and most of the performances were warmly evocative of the season.
I say most, because there is one that is nearly vulgar in its interpretation: Lauryn Hill's version of Little Drummer Boy. She took a classic, and turned it into a hunk of Spam.
However, there is a performance on this CD that is worth the entire cost of the CD itself (even if it were more than $9.99). That performance is Billy Porter's O Holy Night.
I saw the TV special, and Porter sang the song at the end of the first half hour. When he was ending the song in a stunningly powerful fashion, so infused was he that he was jumping around on the stage - and I was so caught up in his passion that I was nearly in tears. When he was finished, the entire audience jumped to their feet *screaming* their approval. In all honesty, I haven't seen an audience respond like that to anyone other Patti LaBelle. I said to my friend: God, I'd hate to be the poor sap that goes on after him! I wish I could remember who it was, but it didn't matter. Whoever it was didn't hold a candle to Porter.
Darren Hayes (former lead singer of Savage Garden) showed, perhaps, why he didn't achieve the same success that he did with Savage Garden. His rendition of Last Christmas reminded no one of George Michael - although it was still serviceable. But comparing the two, Hayes voice sounded weak and shallow.
Still - buy this for Billy Porter. The song is a phenomenon.

This CD reminds of of my family. They left me. Every Christmas I listen to this CD and cry to a box of donuts.

This is truly a strong compilation for the holiday season. Several of the tracks are superb, fresh and upbeat.
Elton providing a new take on the classic WHITE XMAS. The track from CHER (with co-vocals from ROSIE) is worth the price of the entire compilation! This is a perfect CD to play during a holiday party. It'll cast an upbeat and entertaining tone to your festivities.
A Rosie Christmas.......2003-11-09
This truly is a great cd. It has many characters that we can all
know about, there are singers whos voices are truly incredible, and Rosie shines brillantly in this. From Elmo to N*Sync, each person brings something unique and joyous to your christmas occasion. It has all your favorite songs (at least mine), all your favorite singers, and an all time great way to throw yourself into the holidays. Whether you are baking cookies, trimming the tree, or just taking a break from the holiday, Rosie and her friends will brighten your holiday for a long time

My mother had this on vinyl when I was growinf up over 30 years ago. It is timeless Christmas music that you just do not hear the likes of anymore.
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing all these songs again performed in this funky, jazzy a capella manner.
My All-time Favorite!.......2005-10-19
This Swingle Singers album is my very favorite Christmas music. I grew up with Swingle Singers music in the house. If you're not familiar with them, you'll be surprised by the "no words" jazzy style of singing. This is a great "background music" holiday CD, since lyrics can be distracting. However, don't be surprised when you start scatting along with every song.
"Christmastime" features music you'll recognize, like "White Christmas" and "Silent Night," performed in original Swingle Style. There are also beautiful foreign carols, some of which you'll know despite their unfamiliar names.
This album was remastered and released on CD in 2003. Alas, Amazon didn't have it linked to a "Swingle Singers" search, so I wasn't aware if it until now, Fall of 2005. I am so happy I'll be able to Swingle in the car this Christmas! Along with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" music by Guaraldi, and "The Christmas Album" by The Manhatten Transfer, and other favorites, my holiday music collection is nearly perfect!

I can listen to this one year-round.......2004-11-25
This is, without a doubt, the best Christmas CD in my collection. I listen to it over and over at Christmastime, always hearing some new interesting harmony. I even pull it out periodically for a fix during the year! Some of the songs - "White Christmas" and "Some Children See Him" come to mind - have even brought tears to my eyes, because they are so beautifully done. I can't say enough good things about this CD!

You must understand that I love Christmas; I love music; and I really love Christmas music. This is my favorite Christmas cd of all time. It takes you from the contemplative mood of I Wonder as I Wander to the smooth, jazzy and sexy sounds of Merry Christmas Baby, to the poignant reminder that no one race, color or type of person has the exclusive love of God as they sing of children all over the world seeing the Christ child in their image. This is all done with flawless and tight harmonies. As I hear people of much lesser talent achieve fortune and fame, I wonder, "why don't these women make a bizillion dollars?"

Christmas Harmony is a wonderful CD, with a great range of pieces, from traditional carols to jazz arrangements. The quality of the vocal work by these four women (with a little help from Al Jarreau on the incredible "Cherry Tree Carol") is outstanding and will impress the experienced vocalist; but it is also a collection of pieces that are great fun for the average listener. Morgan Ames' arrangements are so tight and the singing is so clean-- you can't help but stop what you are doing and listen to the entire CD.
Angelic, Festive, Fun Christmas Music.......1998-12-04
I purchased this album a few years ago as a cassette. I am a lover of Christmas music and this is my favorite. I have literally worn out my first copy and came to Amazon to buy it in CD format. This album rocks, sooths and inspires. If you love to hear beautiful voices, this album is put together with surprising combinations of arrangements that will keep you humming throughout the season.

This is a phenomenal recording, especially for fans of sophisticated vocal harmonies. If you like NY Voices or Manhattan Transfer, give these ladies a try -- you won't regret it. The selections are broad-ranging, the arrangements are wonderful, and the voices simply superb. I picked this CD up as an impulse purchase, and I continue to search for other titles by the group, but in vain! Too bad, because this album leaves me wanting more.
