5 out of 5 stars Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09

Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11

This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13

My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic in Contemporary Christian Music.......2000-11-08

This CD contains two excellent full recordings from the heyday of 1980's CCM. They are marked by a high amount of technical polish and refreshingly forthright lyrics. While the lyrics don't achieve that simple, seemingly-effortless simplicity that Undercover managed on their "God Rules" recording--here they're a little awkward in spots--they are nevertheless well-suited to the straighforward messages.

I am hereby advising any potential buyers to steer clear of this product, unless you 100% know what you're getting yourself into.

I was surprised to find out that there were so many copies of this floating around now (not to mention that it seems you can order it straight from Amazon,) but upon receiving the package in mail, I now realize why is that.

This new repress of this album is quite simply a pressed cd-r with crappy printed one-sided covers. Of course, I could try to pursue getting my money back, but I'm not about spending time to send cheap cd-r's back from Finland, so I gleefully shall swallow my loss and use this opportunity to notify any other hopefuls of what's happening here.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2004-01-10

I have all of point blanks cd's except for his newest one. this cd is one of his best and one of the best rap cds ever.

      5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2004-01-02

This is one of my favorite Point Blank albums...but I can't find it anywhere. I tried ordering it but amazon spent months but couldn't get it, so my order is cancelled. So far I only got this cd burned, but i don't want real audio quality, I want cd quality, so if anyone has a unit they can sell, put it up on this site. i'd appreciate it.

This is a great album and it is better if not just as good as Prone to Bad Dreams.

      Album Description

Black Comet is dense, economical rock presenting full, raw performances in a chamber rock setting. From the classic rock style of "Look and Listen" and "Pretty Life" in the vein of Neil Young, Van Morrison and VU, to the southern rock gothic of "Elastic Days" that pauses for a Palestrinian lullaby right in middle of the song, this record is handling heavy equipment and handling it well. Horns join in for the "The Pale", a The Who-wants-to-party track, and they appear again on "Black Comet," a song that blends traditional "Cotton-eyed Joe" with Creedence's "Fortunate Son" into a manic coping song -- or is it a fighting song? Like the gas-powered rockabilly spirit of "Racetrack," most tracks on the record hit hard right out of the box, but for this very reason, don't miss the four songs that stray from the ring. Slow dance "Song in F" asks the dance partner to "Stand in, if you must, for the bones on the ground," before the music runs right into regret. "A Revolution Away" is a breathless waltz, a wordless giggle that puts innocence, mischief and hope in very close proximity to the cynical dragon. Funereal anthem "The Witness" might best be filmed at an English football match with the stands singing its Verdi-style chorus, except this is a song about what it feels like when defeat and victory can no longer be distinguished. Gypsy violins replace swooping synthesizers in "Light Dressed Storm," a dance track about the ground getting its revenge on the sky. (Baria Records on The Heavenly States album Black Comet)

Now that Bruce Baby (Springsteen) has taken it down a notch or a dozen, where has all the gusto, that larger-than-humdrum-life rock, gone? It sounds like it's safe in the hands of the Heavenly States. The Oakland band's Black Comet (Baria) dares to grab at that huge honking sound and scope, so rare and out of favor these days - thanks to the always energetic singing by Ted Nesseth, the up-front fiddling of Genevieve Gagon, and the band's tendency to sound as urgent as a 15-alarm fire and generally kick heinie whenever they play. When words fail Nesseth, and the sweet waltz of "A Revolution Away" fades into the poignant flute folk of "The Witness," you're prepared to hand over the keys to Brother Brucie's kingdom of inspirational rock. (Kimberly Chun, San Francisco Bay Guardian, May 2005)

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars review from the Synthesis.......2005-09-01

The Heavenly States churn out rambunctious rock, like the spawn of The Replacements and The Wonder Stuff. The spirit of a rollicking bar band drives much of Black Comet, but what really makes the album click is the addition of Genevieve Gagon's violin and viola. These smokin' strings combine with occasional sax, trumpet and keys to expand the band's sound, enabling The Heavenly States to rock in a more unique way, which is always good. On songs like "Elastic Days" and "Look And Listen," Gagon's violin adds an extra emotional element and an urgent texture to the tunes. While Ted Nesseth's vocal range does not appear to be that broad, he compensates by having something just as important: a true tone of sincerity.

      5 out of 5 stars New Kicks.......2005-07-17

In the past five or so years there has been an obvious trend in popular music. I have heard people refer to it as a "revival". There has been something missing from most of the albums that have been released in this new-old genre. Interpretation. A band of moderately versed musicians can mimic just about any riff or nostalgic mood that rock and roll has to offer, but that is not what makes something relevant. The Heavenly States are relevant because they lace up their musical shoes with their own soles, pockets, tongue and gription. The songs are all different and full of invention. They use their own particular illusions and fears and angst and love, and wrap it up in riffs that we've `almost' heard before. I swear there's a Van Morrison song in the vein of "Look and Listen" but the chorus takes it somewhere else completely. The title track is much like the comet Ted Nesseth sings about. It rushes by, beginning with a huge tribal drum beat that becomes a country ho-down. In the middle eight, the sax solo (yes - a sax solo) is like Clarence Clemons on speed with the rest of the E Street Band. I'm able to hear a multitude of influences and at the same time have a feeling I haven't had before. The album rolls seamlessly in and out of emotions and genres and that makes it stand out like the sore thumb home in the neighborhood -- the home you have to wonder about. This year, it's being subletted by The Heavenly States.

      1 out of 5 stars Truly Horrible.......2005-07-16

This is the Heavenly's second release and, like the first, it's a huge disappointment.

As a live band these guys are a visceral, raw, scream-your-head-off band that can live with any other band around.

As a studio band they seemingly have no idea. The drums sound as though they were recorded through a 30 foot steel door from six hundred miles away and the overall sound of the album suffers the same fate.

Songs like Racetrack and Pretty Life (so vital in concert) are limp wristed and lard assed.

How songs that sound so good when you see these people live can die such a horrific studio death is beyond me.

I think THS should really think about changing producers or do something positive for the next release, because this is 12 tracks of bad news.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had found their first one..........2006-05-09

So I was at church one night talking to my friend Kevin and I mentioned liking Depeche Mode and other synth pop / new wave bands ... he asked me if I listened to MatW, I said no and he told me I should check them out as they had a really really nice new wave sound. I ran off to the local Christian bookstore and picked up the only thing they had which was "Boomerang" on cassette. As soon as the music started my only thought was "Kevin, what the heck is wrong with you?" He failed to mention [or maybe didnt know] that the band had made a radical shift in musical styles. Eventually some of the songs grew on me, but I wish I had found their first album instead.

      4 out of 5 stars A historical perspective.......2005-11-13

This was a groundbreaking release for its time. Frontline was a brand new label that was willing to take chances on something new and different. MATW is second only to DA's "Fearful Symmetry" in the sucessful combination of innovation and artistry on those early releases.

I LOVE the fake British accents!!!

And finally just for the record, The Mad at the World is predated by The Seventy Sevens, whose first album, "ping pong over the abyss," was recorded in 1982.

5 out of 5 stars Great band, but does not pre-date the 77's..........2004-10-05

5 Stars for the self-titled release, fewer for the others. Please ignore the comment about "Without this band there probably wouldn't have been 77's..." Problem is, the 77's have been releasing CCM records since 1982!!! Nice try kid, learn your history.

3 out of 5 stars Everything That's Wrong With "Christian" Music.......2002-07-20

How can these two totally different sounds be from the same band? Artistic growth? NO. Pressure from the Christian Music Industry (which, FYI, is not controlled by Christians.)

Witness MATW's eponymous first CD. Pure musical creativity, dazzling keyboard crafted techno-pop reminiscent of Tears for Fears or Dead or Alive. A rarity in the world of CCM, to be sure; the same was true of the band's second album, "Flowers in the Rain"; though a bit grittier, the synth-driven melodies were still intact.

Then quite abruptly, loyal fans such as myself lay down their hard earned cash for this coaster called "Seasons of Love." Suddenly, Mad at the World became Mad at the keyboards, following the early nineties trend of Christian music: if you're not a) mellow, b)hard rock, or c) rap, don't expect the CCM business to back you. I interviewed Rose at a concert, and it was clear he was disappointed in the "direction" the band had been forced to take. So an inventive band becomes just so much mosh-pit background noise. Thanks, CCM industry, for so narrowly defining what we were allowed to listen to then.

      My Rating:
MATW- 5 stars, Seasons of Love- 0 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Early and Groundbreaking Work.......2002-02-11

I remember first hearing the first album in this set (Mad at the World) while I was in college and being blown away by it. At the time I was very much into the Christian Contemporary Music scene, but when I listened to secular music my tastes tended to run more towards New Order and Front 242 (Odd combination -- I know!) I was completely blown away by the fact that here was a band that sang undeniably Christian lyrics but that were driven by an industrial/goth beat.

OK, so the album is a bit rough in spots -- mostly due to Roger Rose's not being able to write a ballad -- but overall it turns out pretty well. It's aged at least as well as most of New Order's work, and certainly sounds less dated than a lot of other Christian bands from that period (compare this album to say, Whiteheart's Emergency Broadcast and you'll see the difference).

I look upon Mad at the World (together with Steve Taylor) as being the genesis of the entire Christian alternative rock genre. Without these guys breaking this ground there probably would never have been the 77's, jars of clay, or sixpence none the richer.

        Product Description

"Too True to Be Good" marks Ernie Parada's highly anticipated return to playing guitars and contributing heavily to vocal duties for the Arsons, as well as the Arsons second full length for Mad at the World. Hardcore enthusiasts will note that the Arsons' last album, "Bridges Down," was the first recorded material featuring Ernie on drums since his days in TOKEN ENTRY. The Arsons continue to pack a melodic hardcore punch in a similar style to the one Ernie and co-conspirator Jason made popular with their last band GREY AREA. The band's signature guitar hooks and vocal melodies collide with an uncontainable energy and vigor that belies their collective experience. "Too True to be Good" serves as a refreshing reminder that melodic punk doesn't need an "emo" tag; not terribly surprising considering that members of the Arsons helped set the standard for the genre with their past bands, and led the BOUNCING SOULS' Bryan Kienlen to say, "Ernie Parada is a genius. Everything he does is better than everything I and everyone else I know does..."

Just short of an hour long glimpse into the wild and reckless world of early 1980 s New York hardcore. As fellow travelers Urban Waste dissolved following the release of their now classic EP, three quarters of that band, including original UW singer Billy Phillips, teamed up with other local hoods to form Major Conflict, then a veritable supergroup of NYHC. Destined to have become a classic were it not for the whirlwind speed with which they burst on the scene and left it, this record gives a detailed retrospective of Queens-style hardcore, and includes the band s unreleased studio recording featuring Kraut s Johnny Feedback on drums.
