Amazon.com's Best of 2001

When artists can't bank on recording their own material, song selection and performance are crucial. Point of Grace, with their angelic four-part harmonies, have built a decade-long successful career in this style, tallying numerous No. 1 singles and inspiring a number of sound-alikes in the process. The four gals from Arkansas return with their first regular studio release in three years with Free to Fly, perhaps their finest effort to date. They sing their way through a most diverse collection of songs, the high point of which is clearly "Praise Forevermore," a soaring and majestical praise-and-worship tune penned by the brilliant Darlene Zschech (Hillsongs Australia). "Begin with Me," a punchy and muscular anthem, showcases the girls' five-star harmonies, as does "Blue Skies" and the rocking "Something So Good." For a different spin, the group includes the urban R&B-infused "Free Indeed" and the quiet and lilting ballad "La La La." Free to Fly should keep old fans happy and make some new ones in the process. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars tight.......2006-12-26

I remember the first time I heard Point of Grace. The experience came though a set of headphones in the music section of a Medford, Oregon, department store. I had no idea that female vocalists today could sing such tight harmony with such a driving beat (upon occasion). I was sold.

FREE TO FLY is the 2001 offering of a mature Point of Grace girls band and at once a paean to the production skills of Brown Bannister. I do not think I have heard a more superbly produced cd in any genre anywhere. One goes into repeat listening of a four-female format with a bit of trepidation. In the context of repeated, close listening, it is not the easiest format on the ears. Yet FREE TO FLY comes at you time after time, repaying with fresh nuance each additional listening experience.

These voices are so tightly interwoven that with each new hearing one picks up new flourishes and glimpses subdued supporting vocals that somehow had passed unnoticed. This is a symptom of music well made.

The energy they inject into New Zealand songstress Darlene Zschech's 'Praise Forevermore' raises it from a garden-variety praise & worship tune to that of a potently artful showstopper. The verbal riff at 1'48" could blow a man's collar inside out. The voice-to-voice handoff that proceeds it has become a Point of Grace signature, done time and again without descending into cliché.

The album's high point is 'Blue Skies', a soaring piece with surprises in each stanza. The credal statement 'Yes, I Believe' is also a poignant and artistically sophisticated statement of simple conviction and its enduring power. Yet if one mentions these two, it it impossible to leave uncommended the beautiful and humble 'La, La, La', a song that delves much deeper into the waters of Christian spirituality than its title, prima facie, suggests.

'Begin with Me' out to have won a Grammy or a Dove or at least a really large Milkbone for its no-holds-barred arrangement and tight layering. It is awesome listening, as much on the thirteenth hearing as on the first. Perhaps even more on the thirteenth. As opposed to Christian music's Achille's Heel, this music gets better with time.

The four ladies of Point of Grace are what one used to call 'handsome ladies'. They sing and look superb from every angle from which this album allows us to peer into the reality of a girls' band that was - at this pinnacled moment - an inestimably fine group of human beings who happened to be musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Four gorgeous ladies..........2006-01-21

Who would have thought that one of the few decent group acts today would be found in the Christian music industry. But, weirder things have been known to occur. Anyway, this is one of POG's best efforts. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars another great album by POG.......2005-06-28

I love this cd. It is very good to listen to if you are feeling sad or discouraged. It talks mostly about God's everlasting love. The song "Blue Skies" is the perfect example. "Begin With Me" is also a very good song because it really gets you thinking "Do I realize my faults or just look at other people's" the song "He sends His Love" is a very good song to listen to when you don't understand what is going on in your life. Way to go, POG!

1 out of 5 stars Steer clear of this one.......2005-01-07

This is a far cry from Steady On and their first 2 albums, which were great pop releases. This is the worst POG album since Life, Love & Other Mysteries! Here, "Begin With Me" (and 1 other song I cant remember) are the only tracks on this album that are anywhere near good. This album is filled with boring, lame-o, weak-melody junk. And what's to be expected with Nathan Nockles (from Watermark) producing 3 tracks. What are the girls thinking?! They used to be very choosy in picking the songs they record. I don't know what all these reviewers giving this record a 5-star rating are thinking either. Do yourself a favor, and pick up Steady On and their first 2 albums, and steer clear of this sleeper.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for every Christian.......2003-10-18

This is a powerful CD that will move and inspire. What else can be said? I true gift from God.

5 out of 5 stars Point of Grace Demonstrates Why They Are The Best.......2007-01-02

I've been a Point of Grace fan since 1999. When this cd came out, it was so good, I
bought all the cds of Point of Grace. I previously had three. I was amazed at how good
this was and how good their first two albums were too. I also saw the tour for this album and met Point of Grace. They became my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Great album!!.......2006-11-26

I think most of you are very wrong. This is one of the best CDs that Point of Grace has ever put out. I like the hard rocking edge that they have added to their sound. I think that a band has to evolve and change a little as they grow and expand their music. Keep it coming!!!

3 out of 5 stars ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......2006-11-18

This was an OK cd. I like some songs, while others are just too slow. Sorry point of Grace and fans, but this wasn't my favorite Cd from you. The Free To Fly and Steady On are good, but this just falls in comparasion.

4 out of 5 stars The Lovely Ladies Of POG Strike Back.......2006-01-21

It doesn't quite match up to the standards of Free To Fly, but I Choose You is still one of the better pop albums in Christian music. The songs range from fast pop tunes, to slow ballads. It's not perfect, but Heather Payne's voice sure is.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing CD.......2005-04-22

I guess I must be a horrible person, looking at the other reviews. I have been a fan of Point of Grace since they first came out in the early 1990's, and enjoyed their pure, simplistic sound. I appreciated the fact that Point of Grace didn't change with the times and their sound stayed the same. I guess since they had 25 #1 singles, I am not the only one with this sentiment. I was saddened when Terry left the group, but I was glad that POG chose to add a new member and continue in music. However, I never expected POG to take on a harder edge. Listening to this CD, you can clearly hear that they sing in a lower range than in the past and there is no song on the CD that sounds like the classic POG. You can imagine my disappointment when I heard the first single--"I Choose You" on the radio and it had a rocky tune to it. I hope that if POG continues to make music, they don't allow new band-member Leigh to make all the musical decisions, or POG will never have another #1 single again.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, the early nineties.......2006-01-21

Heh. Anyway, if you can get past that, the music on this album is pretty good, especially Keep The Candle Burning and That's The Way It's Meant To Be. Again: Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Sing your songs, Point of Grace!.......2005-04-14

It's a fact: Some CDs simply never get old. Count Point of Grace's LIFE, LOVE & OTHER MYSTERIES among these classics.

After nearly 10 years, Point of Grace's third album still remains their best and most timeless creation. Here, the girls have created a diverse sound that explores pop, rock, gospel, soul, and tender ballads.

The album's title track opens with a simple, beautifully-harmonized reminder of God's omnipotence. The soulful, gospel-tinged "Keep the Candle Burning" reminds listeners to remain faithful during times of hardship. Catchy "That's the Way It's Meant to Be" affirms the awesomeness of God's plan.

Also well-harmonized, "Gone Are the Dark Days" and "You Are the Answer" are a powerful, soaring pair of songs that rejoice in God's redemptive powers.

Point of Grace also manages to create gentle, moving ballads. "Jesus Doesn't Care" is a reminder that forgiveness is always available to humanity. "God Forbid" exalts God's power and urges His children to fear and respect Him. Point of Grace pays tribute to Jesus's faithful disciples in "Any Road, Any Cost." The album's final track, "Circle of Friends," celebrates the day when friends can meet in Heaven.

Consider LIFE, LOVE & OTHER MYSTERIES a worthwhile investment. After all, how many CDs never lose their novelty after 10 years in a CD player?

5 out of 5 stars "YOU ARE THE ANSWER AND THE MEANING OF LIFE".......2004-04-19

Point of Grace has been a staple in Christian music since their debut in 1993 and with faith hope and the love of God they continue to be one of the most powerful Christian bands of all time and still continues to be a favorite among young and old alike. On their third cd life love and other mysteries Point of Grace shows their affection and love of God through their souls out to their fans. The cd's rock fused title track {which recieved limited airplay on christian stations} tells us that not only if you believe in yourself and no other person God will be your friend and help you in times of need. Then comes the powerful Keep the candle burning which is a beautiful ballad about even though some goals are hard to achieve you have to believe with a steady heart. Be sure to listen for the aweome guitar solo. The album's third single You are the answer {The first song i liked from life love and other mysteries} is a Clay Aikenish type song with inspirational lyics and a message that tells us that if we can believe in anything God will be the answer to all our questions {You are the answer is the song where the title of my review is from}. In addition to more great songs not to mention a GREAT cover of Earth wind and fire's sing a song there is also a advertisement for Mercy Ministries a charity that provides homes and money for poor children and family in a space of their own for free and also a order form to order Point Of Grace merchandise. The follow up cd Steady On is very good but it doesn't compare to life love and other mysteries.(...)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2004-01-14

A former girlfriend gave me this CD (without it's case or artwork) 2 years ago. I put it in my CD player & it was great! The group really swings on every song. In other words there's not a bad song on the whole CD. In fact I liked it so much I bought every CD the group has made since including this one as I wanted the CD artwork.

Yep, this CD is a definite winner. I always play it all the way through. You want a group that praises the Lord? Then get this one. You won't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Life, Love and Other Mysteries.......2003-09-30

I love this album. They have beautiful voices. My favorite songs are "That's the way it's meant to be", "Any road, any cost" and "Life, love, and other mysteries." They really have a genius for creating songs that touch you where you are! Oh, and the song "God forbid" was especially beautiful. There were only one or two songs I was disappointed with, "Gone are the dark days" and "Sing a song".
In short, I recommend this album to anyone who likes beautiful harmonies and sometimes fun, sometimes very emotional songs.

In the wake of Marianne Faithfull's disco-punk fusion on 1979's Broken English, Island label mate and disco diva Grace Jones made a similar left turn with a couple of albums of new-wave classics (the Pretenders' "Private Life," Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing"), new-wave "classics" (the Normal's "Warm Leatherette") and a soul chestnut or two ("The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game") given her uniquely growling treatment. As the funk grew stronger, she even placed a few hits on the charts, notably the 1982 "Pull Up to the Bumper." Private Life surveys this, the artiest of Jones's periods, including rare 12-inch and dub mixes. --Rickey Wright

A Great Overall collection of her bigger songs. My favorite is the extended version of "Slave to the Rhythm (8:18)" For the collection and value of the discs, I give it - Five stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Chronicles of her art.......2005-06-25

The dynamic queen of outrage; her stunning, fierce looks and her legendary temper made her famous far beyond those who would ever hear her music. That's the perfect way to describe Jones' recording career. In 1979 her disco theme were cramped; forcing Grace to evolve herself and her musical aspirations. By the help of artist Jean Paul-Goude, they created the basics: a stunning androgynous look and a fast hard hitting rhythm, controlled by reggae legends Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. "Warm Leatherette" was the first of three stunning albums recorded at the Compass Point studios in the Bahamas. The album was an immediate UK success hitting the Top 50 in the album charts; the single "Private Life" was one of her first worldwide hits establishing herself as a regular on the British top chart. "Warm Leatherette" was a compilation of several of covers, from Tom Petty "Breakdown" to Roxy Music "Love Is the Drug" to the Motown's "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game" to far beyond Daniel Millers ominous title track "Warm Leatherette". "Warm Leatherette" also brought Grace the public acknowledgement she never received for her disco work; basically Grace stuck with the chosen songs and further improved them. In 1981 the second album arrived titled: Nightclubbing. Again Sly & Robbie provided the great back-up music for Grace it turned out to be Grace's most successful album to date. Proving once again that Grace had chosen the perfect songs to interpret, her amazing cover of Bill Withers' "Use Me" becomes a sexual plead, and her rocking rendition of the Police's "Demolition Man" made the original totally obsolete. "Nightclubbing" is her most delicious recording to date; from Iggy Pop "Nightclubbing" to Flash the Pan's torch song "Walking in the Rain" really put Grace on the musical map, even as far as, the New Musical Express crowned it album of the year, 1981. Despite of the great covers Grace co-wrote her perhaps biggest hit to date: Pull Up to the Bumper, which is a delicious chocolate flowing in-between dub, proving Grace to be equally versatile as the cover songs chosen. The last of three albums, came in 1982, titled, Living My Life. This time around Grace was overly more involved with the entire process, from song writing to even co-producing the songs. "Living My Life" once again proved Grace's capability as a performer. "My Jamaican Guy" has inspired many hip-hop artist over the years, noteworthy, L.L Coo J's massive hit "Doin' It". Overall "Living My Life" was such a personal piece of work, Nipple to the Bottle recycling the beat of "Pull Up to the Bumper" and "Cry Now, Laugh Later" presented the avant-garde in Grace. Think you can handle a growling rendition of Melvin Van Peebles "The Apple Stretching"? Just listen to Grace's deep conviction and be prepared to be amazed. With "Slave to the Rhythm" Grace further improved her image as the queen of outrage, proving to be one of Grace's biggest hit singles. When all is said and done, Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions is the perfect introduction to her prime-years in music. Although not career-spanning, it showcases Grace Jones' amazing capability as a singer and entertainer. Grace Jones may not regain that kind of perfection ever again, but she doesn't have to, the recordings are the chronicles of her art.

4 out of 5 stars Private Life .......2005-04-22

By all means a phenomenal compilation that covers her outstanding years at Island Records.Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare takes a lot of the credits; an outstanding band leaded by the best musician there is makes for an experience beyond the limited range music in the 80's had to offer. Grace Jones, whipped up some truly remarkable songs, like Sting's "Demolition Man" with its electro-beat and crackling whip lashing makes for what I'd classify as downright naughty. Warm Leatherette the first of three albums by Sly, Robbie and Grace; the album represents some of Jones' most experimental stuff to date, she covers songs from Tom Petty "Breakdown" to The Pretenders "Private Life" and the truly magnificent rendition of The Motown's "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game". The aforementioned song is one of her most delicious tracks; the amazing beat is perfectly complimented by Grace's soulful vocal deliverance (anyone who claims that Grace Jones can't sing should take the time to listen to this marvelous song).

Her cover of The Normals "Warm Leatherette" is something special, indeed. The continuous hints at sex and the amazing band is truly something that everyone should experience, once in a life time that is. My favorite track off Warm Leatherette is the exotic French tune: Pars. Amazing capable of a tranquillest buzz, the breathy, sexy vocals are amongst some her finest and once again the band drains each beat to the bone, truly stunning. Also included is the hypnotic "Private Life" (Presented in both a long and a dub version) stands as one of her biggest hit singles to date. Grace hit the height of her career in 1981 with the album: Nightclubbing. The album was something completely new, a perfect kind of chill: making sex on warm leatherette. The jungle rhythm of "Pull Up to the Bumper" still sounds as fresh and naughty as did nearly 25 years ago and the dog breathing slob of "Feel Up" is equally matched by the mysterious On-Paris-streets-at-night "I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango). Seldom have I heard Grace sound as intimate as she does on "I've Done It Again" which slides right down and strips you off instant breath.

The final session the album cull songs from is "Living My Life" which contains songs of the more personal direction. On the album Grace co-wrote and eventually co-produced each and every song on the album. The beast songs chosen from Living My Life are: the stunning "Nipple to the Bottle", "My Jamaican Guy", "The Apple Stretching" and the heart-throbbing "Unlimited Capacity for Love" which stands as one of my personal favorites. Private Life: The Compass Point Sessions is stunning representation of Grace's Island material; includes 26 songs and many of them are presented in extended and in different mixes. It also includes 2 previously unreleased songs prior to the album release: the funky "Vamp-ish" Man Around the House and the reggae influenced Johnny Cash cover "Ring of Fire". Private Life: The Compass Point sessions are mostly aimed at hard-core Grace Jones fans (who anxiously await a new album release) but it also makes for a great listen to the casual fan who wants to explore the "Grace Jones Legend" a little closer.

5 out of 5 stars the BEST Best of Grace Jones.......2004-09-17

There are SO MANY compilations devoted to this woman's music. I think she actually has more compilation albums than she had regular albums. Whatever. This one's a real winner. Especially if you liked her early eighties work. This double cd covers everything from hard-edged dance tunes ( Warm Leatherette ) to ballads ( the gorgeous I've Done It Again ) to dub reggae ( just about everything else ). Appearing on cd for the first time are several extended versions of songs from her albums ( which were actually recorded as extended versions, by the studio band, the Compass Point All-Stars, not just remixed and extended by some studio boffin ). Great liner notes. Great cover versions. I LOVE THIS CD. Very highly recommended.

For their eighth release, the multiple-award-winning Point of Grace gathered together some talented friends (Nichole Nordeman, Christy Nockels, Out of Eden, Rachel Lampa, FFH's Jennifer Deibler, Jaci Velasquez, Jill Phillips, and Joy Williams) and set out to make a soundtrack for a series of fall 2002 weekend conferences and book releases aimed towards enriching the lives of today's young women. While worship numbers like "All in All," "Every Move I Make," and "Trust in the Lord" are appropriate here and warmly captured by others, it is the tracks by Point of Grace that lift this release up. To date, there's no one in any genre of today's pop music who can match the beautiful harmonies these women produce, as evidenced by the opening "My Heart Is Set on You," "All I'll Ever Need," and "The Love of Christ." Ultimately, treat this release as a special extra in the Point of Grace catalog… but don't let it pass for the real thing. Check out the magical Free to Fly release from 2001. --Michael Lyttle

My favorites are "My Heart is Set On You", "You Are My All in All" "Every Move I Make" and "Promise My Prayers". "In the Calm" and "Breath of God" Are a little slow and boring to me, but that's just me. If you love soft, gentle songs this CD is for you. If you like upbeat and catchy, this CD is for you. If you love music that draws you closer to Jesus, this CD is for you! In general, this CD is for just about everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta have it!.......2003-11-16

My teenage daughter LOVES this!
Great influence on kids, who need good role models in the media.
Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Praise the Almighty!.......2003-08-10

I would have to say that of all of the "Point of Grace" albums I own--I still don't have everyone--this album goes to the top to my list. I really enjoyed the interplay between the quartet or soloists and the chorus. It is a masterful stroke to do that. I think all of my neighbors have heard the album.

I really like the fact that all of the songs have a Scripture base, like Psalm 108:1. My favorite song, on this album is "The Love of Christ." I could listen to this song alone for hours. It is really uplifting and inspirational.

Point of Grace did itself proud to include other artists and a chorus.

5 out of 5 stars the best CD ever.......2003-01-08

I couldn't believe this CD it was the BEST CD I have ever heard in my life and I became a christian because of it so thank you God for putting this CD in my hands

this was my first Christian cd and i totally loved it! i normally dont enjoy cont. Christian but this is the exception. i have about four of their albums, maybe five i dont know, but this has my favorite song. track 3. but everything is really pretty and i think the songs emphasize the range of the girls' voices. very good.

5 out of 5 stars POG is awesome.......2005-09-23

This is one of my all time favorite cd's. The girls of POG have amazing voices and perfect harmony. The songs are also beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars great cd.......2005-06-21

I think this cd, along with The whole truth is a very good witnessing tool. It talks a lot about God's love, and his plan, and even the rapture. This is my favorite POG cd by a landslide!

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2004-06-17

This is a wonderful CD. All the songs really get you thinking about God, and I believe that's what Christian music is supposed to do.

      Album Description

Winter Wonderland is a breathtaking assortment of ten classic Christmas songs that we have come to know and love. Long-time collaborator Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith) returns as producer, showcasing Point of Grace's vocally intricate harmonies and beautiful string arrangements on select tracks. This holiday collection contains something for everyone from traditional sing-alongs like "Jingle Bells" to a more contemporary version of "Little Town".

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let There Be Light!.......2007-01-24

Bought the CD for this particular song...just an inspiring and uplifting piece of music. Thank you for such a gift!

5 out of 5 stars What A Way To Catch My Ears.......2006-12-26

First things first--This is no ordinary Christmas collage. Not just "Breath Of Heaven (Mary's Song)" but, yet another Amy Grant classic, the Chris Eaton penned, "Little Town" are what paces this set well out of the usual and into the realm of extraordinary!!! ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!!

As for Breath Of Heaven, following in the footsteps of Donna Summer and Vince Gill, Point Of Grace's rendition of Amy's now standard anthem is what totally makes the album a class work of art.

Then, even though this album was a great piece, it gets even better. Although quite rare, "Little Town" is certainly given sparkle and verve that only Point Of Grace have purely mastered. Absolutely the gem in this set!!

With the fun, spunky and yet poignant character that this set offers, every Christmas mood is showcased and all with the beautiful harmonies and orchestration that can only be described as graceful.
Highlights include "For Unto Us", "It'sThe Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" and "Let There Be Light"

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as 'A Christmas Story'.......2005-11-28

These ladies have beautiful voices, but I am disappointed by this album. The song selections are trite and the album isn't much of a value at less than 45 minutes long. I prefer the song selection and arrangements of their 1999 Christmas release- it's a unique addition to my Christmas music collection that gets played frequently during the season.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony.......2005-11-22

I don't buy many Christmas CD's, since I only listen to them for about a month out of the year. So if I do buy a Christmas CD, it needs to be very good.
The four ladies of Point of Grace showcase their wonderful harmony on "Winter Wonderland." Their version of "Jingle Bells" sounds like something from the big band era with the Andrews sisters.
The secular songs are fun, but Point of Grace is a Christian group, and it is on the spiritual songs that they really stand out. "Let There Be Light" is a nice new song with guest vocalist John David Webster. Point of Grace sings an acapella version of "In the First Light." On "Little Town" and "For Unto Us" they set familiar lyrics to unusual melodies.
The CD closes with "All Is Well," featuring Heather singing solo and Michael W. Smith on piano. I've always thought that song sounds like a lullaby, but Heather sings it so powerfully.
If you're going to get a new Christmas CD this year, do get this one.

5 out of 5 stars More traditional than their other Christmas album.......2005-11-17

Point of Grace's first Christmas album 'A Christmas Story' hit legendary status. They took traditional songs and reworked them wonderfully. I was expecting something similar with 'Winter Wonderland' but didn't find it. Point of Grace seems to take more of a traditional approach on this album. They have reworked traditional songs but they stay fairly close to the original. The one exception of course is the song entitled "Let There Be Light" which is a new song. It's no secret that the voices of the members of Point of Grace seem to melt into one voice so if traditional Christmas music is your thing you're going to love this cd. If you're looking for more of a departure from the traditional songs you may be a little disappointed the first run through. Give it another listen or two, however, and I think you'll come to enjoy this cd more and more. Christmas music is used for a variety of purposes: to get into the Christmas mood, as background for a Christmas party etc...this cd would work well for all of them. I give this cd 5 stars because of the quality of vocals and songs themselves. These are classic Christmas songs and will be enjoyed by all. Have a very Merry Christmas!

I'm a fan of this group, and have most of their cd's. Most of of the songs from this collection appeared before, so check to see if you already have them. On the other hand, if this is the first time you've heard of the, this would be a nice way to start. I don't understand, however, why they release remixes. They've already got one called Rareties and Remixes.
