This ain't real strip club music!.......2004-02-13
Man, this ain't no real strip club music! The only song on here that is worth the cd's price is K7's song, and that ain't even strip club music either! If you want to hear REAL strip club music, buy a DJ Boss Pimp or 2 Live Crew cd and call it a day.
Hard to find songs in one place........1999-02-02
As a mobile D.J., I've found the "Strip Jointz" series of compilations very helpful (my wife doesn't appreciate the cover art or the concept, but...). If you're a fan of R & B or rap music, these include some very hard to find selections all on one CD. I bought this one for "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix A Lot, "Dazzey Dukes" by Duice and "Give It To Me Baby" by Rick James. Great to throw on as background at a party, too!

"Come with me, under my coat".......2002-12-31
"And we will drink our fill..."
These are the first two strophes of Samuel Barber's "The Coolin," one of the three songs in his choral song cycle "Reincarnations." A friend recommended that I listen to this song, someone who had fond memories of singing it but who had yet to hear a satisfactory recording of the work. Given the enthusiasm, even exuberence, that she displayed regarding the singing, I thought it important enough - and only fair - that I seek out the best possible performance of the work. So I ended up acquiring three CD's, all containing "The Coolin" (and two containing the full set of "Reincarnations" songs). Having listened now to all three, it is easy for me to state that this CD contains the hands-down winner. And to further add that the other two Barber songs in the cycle really don't measure up to this one, so the absence of them on this release is no great loss to me.
Set to a love poem by the early-20th century Irish poet James Stephens, "coolin" is a lock of hair (or "curleen") that grows on a young girl's neck, an expression seemingly equivalent to "sweetheart." Stephens goes on to say, "I sought to represent that state which is almost entirely a condition of dream wherein the passion of love has almost overreached itself and is sinking to a motionless languor." Barber's beautiful setting of the poem reflects that aim totally, and the singing of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra Chorus captures the passionate languor perfectly.
The album - billed as "a choral journey through the twentieth century" and meant to spotlight the excellence of the chorus - is interesting both in terms of what it includes and what it overlooks, in terms of choral classics. The opening track contains a truly fine performance of John Tavener's "Song for Athene" (made famous as the recessional at Princess Diana's funeral although written some years earlier upon the death of a friend of Tavener). If you want a fine performance of this particular Tavener work but are not sure whether you want an album full of his works, look no further.
There are three songs in French (by Debussy, Badings - actually a Dutchman - and Poulenc). For me, the Badings song ("La nuit en Mer," from his "Three Breton Songs" of 1948) is one of the true "sleepers" in this album, a work I'd hardly expect to run across under normal circumstances and a beautful one at that.
Needless to say, there is a lot of "Americana" here as well, including an arrangement of Aaron Copland's harmonization of the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" for chorus and piano, an Alice Parker setting of "Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal" and a simply drop-dead-gorgeous setting of "Shenandoah" by J. Erb (no first name provided in the notes). Two fine inclusions are a wonderful setting of Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are" (breathtaking in its harmonic daring) and the evergreen "Make Our Garden Grow" from Bernstein's "Candide" (the album "closer").
In addition to the Tavener work, the century's end is well-represented by Allen Jay Kernis ("How the Soul Speaks to God"), Morten Lauridsen ("O Love, Be Fed With Apples While You May" from his "Mid-Winter Songs") and Conrad Susa ("Winds of May" from his "Six Joyce Songs").
This is an eclectic collection, as individual for what it does NOT include as for what it does. For example, there is not a single song by Charles Ives (who wrote well over 150 of them, many of them beautiful), or by William Schuman (another prolific songwriter). England is represented only by Tavener, and therefore there are none of the fine songs written by John Rutter and Benjamin Britten. And there is nothing to represent 20th-century Scandanavia. (For example, though Einojuhani Rautavaara is mentioned in the booklet notes and has written many fine songs, none are included here.) Nevertheless, I hardly think that choral fans will be disappointed with the selection provided (chosen, I would guess, by both the chorus itself and by its conductor, Vance George).
Vance George certainly has the proper bona fides (mentoring under both Robert Shaw and Margaret Hillis, herself a Shaw acolyte), and he has developed the San Francisco Symphony Chorus to an enviable level (as can be demonstrated by the fine support they provide for a number of orchestral/choral works conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas). Clearly, this chorus must number among the top half-dozen currently supporting major orchestras in the U.S.
The recorded sound quality is mostly excellent, although a few of the tracks don't seem to be representative of the usual Delos mastery of capturing sound in difficult acoustical environments. But, then, Davies Hall (the home of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra) is quite well-known for its tricky acoustics.
The booklet notes - by Laura Stanfield Prichard - are good for what they are. The organization of the notes follows neither the strict chronology of the works nor the actual playing order. But the notes do a reasonable job of describing the works themselves, save for any mention whatsoever of Jerome Kern or of the arranger who provided the drop-dead-gorgeous setting of "All the Things You Are."
But, despite these nitpicking minor criticisms of mine, if you are - like me - a choral junkie, you'll want this album in your collecction. For all the good reasons I've highlighted above. And most especially for Sam Barber's "The Coolin."

Exceptional tone and quality.......2001-06-05
Symphony choruses don't often get to shine outside the spotlight of the orchestras they're associated with, but this collection shows off the high level of quality that the SF Symphony Chorus brings to all their performances. I've never heard a better recording of the Alleluia, which many choruses attempt -- but few can pull off.

I LOVE IT!.......2003-01-23
This album is GREAT! My ultimate favorite is "Everything is Everything." Duawne and Tiffany...you guys are AWESOME! This song alone get's five stars!...
Harborwood are on to something here.......2002-11-28
I must credit Harborwood records, there's been a flow of some really good material from them. I first picked up both editions of "With This Ring", and they blew my mind. After picking up "Songs for the Soul" vol. 1 & 2, i was amazed.
On Vol. 2, you can't go past the gem that Tonex drops (Language O Tears) - it's excellent, vintage Tonex - one of the smoothest and most powerful ballads i've heard from him to date. Then there's Daryl Coley's take on Fred Hammond's "No Weapon". For just those two cuts, this album is worth your money. Fortunately, it doesn't even slow down there. Duawne Starling and Tiffany Palmer (featured prominently on other Harborwood albums) shine very very brightly on two cuts, and then there's the amazing Chris Willis (who's been quiet for far too long). Joes Pace delivers "Hold On", and Joey and Alvin from Take 6 remind us why Take 6 has been the most awesome vocal group for nearly two decades - "God will take care of you" is their awesome track.
Shortly - worth your money, any day!!

Customer Reviews:
Focus on Ophelia and Desdemona.......2007-05-09
Shakespeare in Music covers music inspired by three Shakespearean tragedies, Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear, and focuses on Ophelia's mad scene and Desdemona's Willow Song. Only a few minutes are devoted to King Lear, with Claude Debussy's introductory Fanfare and his tone picture Le Sommeil de Lear.
This album concentrates on the central scenes where Ophelia and Desdemona sing and shows how eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth century composers responded to these extreme emotional states of the two heroines.
In Othello, Desdemona 's Willow Song develops out of her despair, fear, and presentiment of death. The old song of scorned love expresses the anguish of Desdemona, hurt and threatened by her husband Othello's jealousy and unjust accusations. Treatments here of the Willow Song include works by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Carl Loewe, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Erich Korngold, and others.
In Hamlet, Ophelia's mad scene is punctuated by her alternation of confused speech and abrupt sing-song, expressing her depression and departure from reality. Included here are works by William Linley, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Peter Tchaikovsky, Ernest Chausson, and others. The Schumann selection, however, does not involve Ophelia's mad scene, but instead the scene where Queen Gertrude tells Hamlet that Ophelia has drowned herself ("There is a willow grows aslant a brook...").
This album contains thirty musical selections, and a booklet containing the major texts in English, German, and French upon which the songs are based. They are not translated, per se, but the texts in different languages more or less correspond with each other, and the meanings can easily be determined. Overall, the album is a pleasant and instructive sampling of music inspired by these Shakespearean passages over the last three centuries. Mezzosoprano Rosemarie Buhler has a lovely voice, and she and the accompanists do a fine job. Students of Shakespeare, as well as anyone who enjoys the plays Hamlet and Othello, would appreciate this music.

He's got the Whole world in His Hands, Vol.2 .......2007-01-03
This was purchased as a gift for my wife, so I can only go by her comments. She liked it and uses it when she sings at various nursing homes. Based on that, I would rate it high.

Hard to single out any one composer.......2000-06-25
Besides the incomparable John Tavener, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford's "For Lo, I raise up", Sir William Harris's "Strengthen ye the weak hands", Sir C Hubert H. Parry's "My soul, there is a country'", are memorable.
A Mixed Bag, but a good one.......2000-05-03
The St. Paul's Cathedral Choir, like the Westminster and Winchester Cathedral Choirs, has a long-standing and fruitful contract with Hyperion, and has produced a number of recordings including this on-going series. Any of volume in "The English Anthem" is a prime example of the standards of the Choir, as well as showing just what range of styles exists within the genre.
On this disc, a particularly varied programme is presented, including such popular Victorian and neo-Victorian figures as Harris ("Strengthen ye the weak hands"), Stanford ("For lo, I raise up") and Parry ("My soul, there is a country"), each typical in his own way through these anthems. There are also a number of offerings from the twentieth century, and these too are broad-ranging in terms of style and the levels of skill needed to make them work. Tippett's rare gem "Plebs angelica" strikes an austere and exultant note; Bairstow's "If the Lord had not helped me" is a sombre, calm and reverent piece; Elgar's "Ave verum corpus" is simplicity itself. The series also appears to be a forum for the Choir to show off the various offerings written for them- amongst these are the short setting "Let thy hand be strengthened" by former organist Christopher Dearnley, the "Three Antiphons" of John Tavener and by far the most difficult and unusual work on the disc (both to perform and to listen to): "Dum transisset Sabbatum" by Jonathan Harvey.
This is indeed a mixed bag, and for that reason I have given it four stars as it may not be wholly to everyone's liking. Whatever one's taste, however, one thing is certain: every work on here is brilliantly and sensitively performed, under the direction of John Scott. Throughout, the choir prove their unique ability to fill the magnificent acoustics of their home. (It should be appreciated that just because a building is very resonant, that does not make it easy to sing in!)
Listening to any track really does give you the feel of what it must be like every day in St. Paul's when the anthem of the day is announced. A treasure trove of choral gems that you'll want to go back to again and again- and whether or not you decide to collect the whole "English Anthem" series, it is still worth having one of these records around.
