Awesome Debut For Blues Guitar Master.......2007-04-04
When Fast Fingers was first released in 1969, Jimmy Dawkins was recognized as a blues guitarist on his way up. He never has received the acclaim he deserves, but this record, his debut album still holds up, and showcases a talent that we are still bless to have with us.
Dawkins' style of playing is mournful but frenetic, with lost of fast runs (hence the album name, which became Dawkins' nickname) and times when his playing starts to build up like the music is going to speed up considerably, but he levels off.
Songs like It Serves Me Right To Suffer, I'm Good For Nothing, I Finally Learned A Lesson, and I Don't Know What Love Is show off this skillful technique, and make you wonder why Dawkins doesn't occupy a more prominent place in the blues pantheon. Regardless, this CD is excellent, and very enjoyable for anyone who likes the blues and blues guitar.
A Story of the Dirty No Good Blues.......2006-04-06
This is Jimmy Dawkins first and strongest album. Dawkins would never be quite so innovative and tough again. The other reviewer said that Jimmy Dawkins was not one of the original West Side Soul and Blues men (which is true) but he is one of the original "dirty" blues men. He was one of the first to turn the distortion on his guitar up a notch. He muzzled the sound of the guitar so that it dosen't sound quite as sharp but the screams and underlying heartbreak come across all the same.
An essential addition to your West Side Blues Collection.......2001-03-08
Jimmy Dawkins was not the first, but he was and is one of the very best West Side (of Chicago) blues guitarists. This is his first album, and it features some killer guitar work along with some somber singing in that classic minor-key West Side sound.
Highly recommended.

One of my favorite CD's of all time........2003-04-06
D & D are some unusually talented brothas, and they really shine on this collection of urban inspirational tracks. Yes, "Necessary Measures" was released in 1994, but it still sounds just as fresh as the day it was released (the expression "Word Up" aside, but we'll excuse even that since the song itself is so good). Not only does it still sound current in most every way...it gets better with each listen.
Jet Penix and Fred Hammond lend their fantastic production skills to this project -- but it's the Dawkins brothers who steal the show with their songwriting and vocal abilities. Never overdone or underdone, they allow the Lord to use them to deliver The Message with lyrics that are never preachy; but it will still uplift everyone who listens to it, whether they attend church or not.
I said in the title of this review that this is one of my favorite CD's of all time, and I meant it: it really is that good. I own a LOT of music, both spiritual and mainstream -- and have listened to even more than what I own -- but "Necessary Measures" will always have a permanent spot in my personal Top Ten. And while it may not be that "deep" for you, I guarantee you that you will still enjoy this CD immensely!
Dawkins and Dawkins, where are you? We're ready for your next project (it's been 5 years since "Focus"). Come on, fellas!

Album Description
Recorded at the Velvet Lounge on July 14, 2005, The Messenger's melodyharmonic- rhythm-tonic DNA matrix is encoded with all that came before and all that's happening now with Chicago jazz. This is music that rocks a funky-tight nappy-headed swing shift like it ain't no big thing. This is music that huffs, puffs and laffs like Jr. Wells a half-pint up. This is music that rolls like church, dances like Africa and strong-arms beats 'n' bops like Art Blakey when he had Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and Curtis Fuller in the Jazz Messengers. This is music that could only be conceived-writtenarranged- performed by Ernest Dawkins' New Horizon Ensemble. Complete notes by Tom Terrlll enclosed.

Real blue Blues.......2004-08-01
Caught some Dawkins by accident and bought this CD because it is somewhat of a compilation of his music. I must say it is the Blues. No Rock here. Pure Blues. Not really a bad cut on the CD, and Me, My Gitar and the Blues as well as Cold as Hell are fantastic. These as slow grinding deep Blues. Jimmy just seems to go for those low tones, and I love them.
The only complaint I might have would be in the production of some of the songs. It seems as if on the first three cuts that the producer is ashamed of the guitar (no need to be), the backup band, mostly the drums, just overwhelm Jimmy on the guitar.
All in all it is a great sampling of a great Blues man.

One Of The Originators Of The Rhythm & Praise.......2005-06-28
Dawkins & Dawkins released one of the great gospel CD's of '98 called "Focus" which was one of the first gospel CD's that I purchased after I turned my life over to God. The CD had some of the heavyweight producers in the gospel industry at that time. The producers of note was Warryn Campbell(Mary Mary), Rodney & Fred Jerkins(Mary J. Blige & more), Fred Hammond, PAJAM(J. Moss & Paul Allen) & Dawkins & Dawkins. The CD starts of with the trademark called "Rhythm & Praise" in which Warryn Campbell drops a dope west coast beat while the two brothers lace the track and then Rodney & Fred Jerkins produces the next two tracks called "Focus" & "Wrapped Up"(which has a great carribean sound to it. Fred Hammond produces his only song on the album called "Your Joy" which a great praise song while the "Be With You" interludes should had been consolidated with track 14. Then "I'll Always Be Around" is another great production from Warryn Campbell who make a mid-tempo beat for listener. Track 7 is kind of intriging because you would think that a title called "Child Of God" would be a great praise & worship song but it is great uptempo cut from J. Moss & PAJAM with J. Moss adding the rap & the hook. Track 8 "Need To Know" is probably the song that stands out that a lot of rhythm & praise artists can remember listening to on the radio and seeing the video. Once again Fred & Rodney Jerkins of darkchild puts together a great beat while Dawkins & Dawkins tells a great story all of the things that you need to know about in regards to your salvation. Then the next song is another praise song called "Praisin' On My Mind", then J. Moss wraps up his production with "Not Just Anybody" and the rest is self-observation. Overall a great album in which I believe is their third album after their self-titled debut. The last time that I can recall hearing anything from them was a track that they produced on Trinitee 5:7 called "What He Wants". We need some more r&p like this. God Bless!!!
Gospel Music Never Sounded Better.......2005-03-30
The gospel music movement is very powerful behind such artists as The Winans, Commissioned, Shirley Caesar, Take 6, Yolanda Adams, etc. However these BRUTHAS are SICK.....with the annointing. When I first heard this album I thought it was an R&B group until I listened to the words. I played it so much the music and lyrics started falling of the CD. My GOD, is the next phase of GOD'S MUSIC? What a statement! I personally think D&D are underrated. They don't get enough press. I heard some R&B stations play Need To Know once maybe twice and that was it. WHY I WONDER? Their music is along the lines of Kirk Franklin so I don't know the reason. I need another release from them soon. I'm listening it to the CD right now as I'm writing this review. I love the entire album by my 3 personal favorites on this album are Child of God, Focus, and Need To Know. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if you like gospel music, how could you not like this album? Keep blessing us with the hits D&D. Keep praising GOD...only the way you know how!
Urban Contemporary Gospel at it's best!.......2003-08-21
This album by far is one of the best that I have ever heard. I played the cd so much that it's now scratch up from the wear and tear. I was first turned on to Dawkins & Dawkins from the WOW gospel album when I heard the remix of "Wrapped up". I am an avid fan of urban contemporary gospel music and also a broadcaster who has worked at gospel music stations and as a dj in gospel clubs. It's just so sad that the Dawkins brothers are taking so long to release another album. I mean five years, come on Dawkins brothers stop making your sisters and brothers in Christ suffer. We need to be inspired more by your annoited voices. I did get an earful of the new song though which is tight and I hope the album is soon to follow.
AWESOME, AWESOME - I JUST LOVE THESE ANNOINTED BROTHERS!![.].......2003-04-03
I truly have to praise God for these brothers they have blessed my entire family with the sound of their music and not only that the lyrics are so profound you just know that they had to have sought the LORD before writing. This CD is for people of all ages that truly enjoy urban GOSPEL. When I got saved I said Lord I love R & B but I love you more and God sent DAWKINS & DAWKINS my way and they truly blow it out. This CD may be old but it seems like it's for today. They truly are before their time. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THEIR NEXT CD!!! I WISH THEY WOULD HURRY UP!!![.] WORK ON THEIR HEARTS LORD TO GO IN THE STUDIO A LOT SOONER. WE ALL NEED TO PRAY FOR THESE BROTHERS TO CONTINUE TO REACH YOUNG PEOPLE WITH THIS HIP AN ANNOITED SOUND!!
Rhythm and Praise (Urban Style).......2002-10-27
Dawkins and Dawkins are back and better than ever. This is a urban gospel album that you need to have if you are a fan of urban contemporary gospel. With hit singles like Wrapped Up, and Need To Know along with production from some of the hottest producers in both gospel and R&B, this album will have your head bobbin your head. by the way this album features producton by J.Moss and Paul "PDA" Allen (PAJAM), Warryn Campbell, Darkchild, and Dawkins & Dawkins themselves. buy it if you don't have it.

cookie cutter blues.......2004-01-04
I wish I could say something nice about this CD but, I love the blues too much to endorse this sorry effort. With all due respect to Mr. Dawkins who was very influencial in the day, this CD sounds like it was manufactured, not felt. Besides a very sterile type studio recording, what's up with that guitar tone!!? Anyone who's been playing as long as he has should know how to get a decent guitar tone and even if he's getting older and losing his hearing, why didn't the producer say something? I mean, it sounds like some kid practicing in his bed room through a cheapo Peavey amp. Even the famous and competent backing musicians couldn't save this from disaster. Sorry Jimmy, you gotta do better than this.
Dawkins at his best.......1999-11-15
As an avid Dawkins listener throughout the past 20 years, I feel that Jimmy has continued to grow and be innovative as an artist. This CD is of particular interest in that Jimmy is backed by his protege, Billy Flynn. These two have maintained a close professional and personal relationship throughout the years since meeting in the early 1970's. Their partnership on this CD is synergistic. While Flynn has gone on to develop his own style and reputation as a dynamic blues stylist, Billy also shows deep respect for his mentor Jimmy Dawkins on this CD. It is a great pairing and Dawkins continues to speak and play honestly through his music.

gentleman jim.......2005-10-12
Mr. Dawkins has, I believe, made his best album ever and I think he will even do better because he's a prime example of a career bluesman who lives for his work and works for his life. Age and experience for Gentleman Jim is his harvest and he ploughs deep. On this album he thoroughly exhibits that magic ability only a very few blues guitarists have to interplay so intimately between the strings and his vocal cords.
Another great cd from JD........2005-01-14
Jimmy Dawkins continues to make fine CD's and his latest, his second on Fedora Records, is a very fine cd. Recorded in California, it finds Dawkins backed by a basic guitar-organ-bass-drums combo and going through a varied set of songs. There's the slow blues ("Falling Tears", "Mean Ole Blues") that Dawkins is a master of, but he also does well on up-tempo songs like the Magic Sam-style "Mid Nite Boogie". There is also a very fast instrumental, "Kotten Field Jump", a style of song that Dawkins has used many times before.
Once again, Jimmy Dawkins comes up with another fine CD to add to his fairly large discography. This one, while not at the same level as his album's for Delmark, is a fine showcase for his trademark style and fans of his will not be disappointed with this release
