Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

This was the first MWS cd I bought, and it got me hooked. Secret Ambition and Crystal Thrown are my favorite songs on disc, but I love them all. Now I have 3 MWS cd's and 2 more on the way. I am now a true fan.

This album helped mold me into the person I am today. The first song of his I ever heard was "The Throne" in 1996. I immediately begged my mom to buy the album. Secret Ambition is definately my favorite song, but the whole ablbum is great. 10 years later, I have seen him 5 times in concert and have purchased everything he has put into print.

No matter what your personal religious standing is, this album should appeal to you. If you're into 80's pop, or just into great songwriting, look no further than this album. "Hand of Providence" is a definite keeper. "Secret Ambition" is an 80's arena rocker. My personal favorite is "The Other Side," which sounds kind of like "Boys of Summer," but not as stupid. Christian or not, i2(eye) is pure music Heaven. I also highly recommend "Go West Young Man" which i found at K-Mart for like $1.99.

After almost 20 years it's still my favorite Smitty album.......2005-04-05

I love this CD very much. I think that out of all of Michael W. Smith's recordings (with the exception of his latest which I have not yet listened to), this is the best. I think i2(eye) shows how versatile Smitty's musical talent really is much better than any of his other recordings (except, of course, for FREEDOM which was entirely instrumental). But I also think i2(eye) does a much better job of digging into theology than his other works. And even though this album was released in the 80s, most of the music on it is not so 80s-sounding. The majority of the music on here is fresh and original.

Enormously popular at the time of it's release was the folksy opener "Hand of Providence". "Secret Ambition" is a truly timeless classic highlighting the ministry of Christ. "Ashton" is a haunting and hard-hitting instrumental piece written as an ode to Frank E. Peretti's classic novel THIS PRESENT DARKNESS. Probably my favorite song on here has to be "I Miss the Way". This is a very soft and very melodic song that reaches out to the believer who has gotten distracted and gotten off course in his or her Christian walk. I guess the reason why this song's message speaks so loudly to me is because it is something that happens to all of us, if we were to be honest.

I've only mentioned my personal favorites on here. But if you have a wide range of musical tastes (if you're a Smitty fan, you have to), then you'll probably enjoy just about every song on here.

There will be no need to press the fast forward button when listening to this CD.

Brain-body rap fuel is cool.......2005-07-21

This is where the dictation connection of rap can find its Higher Purpose: DJ Alex J's delivery of Intelligence combined with musical textures and tones. Consider this food for the Sophisticated Cool. Anyone who can throw "abacus" into a sentence has the tools that need your attention; that's U Dig Da Mental in the co-Pilot's seat. Pump it along with sound effects that are Cosmically Connected--and dig that machine-like whine keyboard on "The Power of Words." Want more mood? It's got a Carribean-like bass tone that supports the social philosophy of "What Is Black?"

The D.O.R. use a less-is-more muted fluttering electric piano and jazz guitar to lend some air so you "Don't Sweat It": another great sample of a Thinking Man's creative touch. Follow the map of this rap and "Let it Go." That bird singing on flute is your guide; the Deviants are your Leaders. The percussionists take over on "Maxine" and the free-spirited happiness of "The Art of Mind Travel" was made to toss at a party. C'mon, slice it and dice it.
