5 out of 5 stars Meshell at her very best!.......2007-01-30

Ten years after its release, this is still my favourite Meshell Ndegeocello CD ("Bitter" comes a close second) and is one of my favourite albums of all time. A mistress of the bass guitar, with the sexiest voice I've ever heard in my life, she covers a wide variety of subjects on this controversial, bible-referenced album, ranging from her issues with religion ("The Way"), to her love for women ("Mary Magdalene") to familial homophobia ("Levicticus: Faggot") while all the way through speaking of a love much deeper than any I could ever imagine or hope to experience. "When we make love I feel it so deeply/ When we make love I cry," she sings on "A Tear And A Smile", for instance. She sings later on in the same song: "I would not exchange the sorrows of my heart for the joys of the multitude/ And I would not have the tears that sadness makes to flow from my every part turn into laughter/ I want the hunger for your love and beauty to fill me from the depths of my spirit."

Or check out "Bittersweet": "You enchant me so my bittersweet flower/ Mystery of the sages come into my realm of imagination/ Let Me Digest You," she sings (I've never heard it put like that before) and then goes on: "I cry myself to sleep over you/ You come and then you go/ The more I fall the more you let go/ The sweet taste of you stains my lips/ Even through the pain it's only you I miss."

Damn, girl.

She's right of course, in my opinion. I too question whether religion has ever really been a force for good and I too think real love does mean giving oneself completely, without fear of falling; jumping without a parachute, if you will. I've just never had the guts to try it.

Meshell Ndegeocello is a pioneer in more ways than might be immediately apparent. She was certainly combining hip-hop, soul, funk and the spoken word long before anyone else that I know of. This is top-notch music right from the intro to the end of the last song. Personally, I feel this is a five star classic. I liked "Plantation Lullabies" well enough but it was this album that made me a life-long committed fan. I think she's a genius.

5 out of 5 stars Off the hook!!.......2006-09-25

This CD by MeShell is still my absolute favorite. I have all of her CDs and I love her music. She is a phenomenal talent.

4 out of 5 stars Strong, funky & gentle.......2006-02-25

I first purchased this album when it came out in 1996 and loved it then.
Had to buy it again in 2006 because it went missing from my collection.
Me'Shell has a great voice, the grooves are funky and has great lyrical content.
This album belongs in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should be listening to Me'shell.......2006-02-02

I've had this CD for years and I love listening to the smooth sounds of this talented bassist. Me'shell is a true artist every way. She make beautiful music and if you're not listening to her then you are truely missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Me'Shell is a true original.......2005-11-25

This is Me'Shell's best recording, and in fact a quintissential new funk/R&B recording that deserves a place in anyone's collection. It represents an exploration, both sonically and conceptually. The songs that start out as ballads end up as tight, intense grooves, and the songs that start out fast still sound smooth and deep.

I was attracted to this recording because I am a bass player, and Me'Shell is as funky a bass player as they come. What brings me back to this recording, again and again, is the quality of the songwriting and the boldness of the musical statements she makes. Buy it.

Amazon.com essential recording

James Brown's status as one of the hottest live performers translated into a string of absolutely massive in-concert albums, but none are better than this outrageously funky outing. This is the only live CD available with Bootsy Collins and the original JB's posse, and Brown leads the incendiary ensemble through an airtight set. Only "Georgia on My Mind" reaches for the dimmer switch, but the point by then is immaterial coming after the ridiculous onslaught of "Brother Rapp" and "Ain't It Funky Now"--try to find the impossible seam between those two tracks. A hazardous slipstream of soul! --John Corbett

5 out of 5 stars Whe God throws a party, this is what He plays.......2007-06-25

The first few minutes of "Ain't It Funky Now" and "Give It Up" are the Rosetta Stone of what it means to make a funky sound. It just don't get no funkier.
Paris sure got it goin' on; this is yet another killing live show from the town that makes everyone play at the outer limits of their abilities.
I took the funkiest tracks from this and the Dallas '68 JB cd and put them together on my mp3 player for running, and I can blow out mile after mile without even noticing; take out the ballads and those shows are like a lightning bolt.
The Maceo JB band was super tight, and this band was super rubbery. Both were extreme Funk, inventing the genre as they went. No one has come close to this day; this is the fonk from the Source itself.
JB was the original black power superstar, and in 1971 he was a true revolutionary. That power fairly crackles throughout this recording, and when it busts loose on Ain't It Funky, New Day, Sex Machine and Give It Up, there is an almost mystical energy created, like the sound a sperm might make when it beats the pack of a hundred million and slides in to the egg first.
Bootsy is 19 here (!!!), and he and his brother Phelps bring a loping intensity that has never been equalled; this may be the funkiest bass playing ever captured on tape. I've loved JB since hearing Brand New Bag in grade school, and always knew there must be a live recording that captured the essence of him at this funkiest.
Here it is.
James' voice wavers at points (ten shows in six days in Paris, just another stand in yet another town...hardest workin' man in show biz indeed), but his energy and conviction drive his band to the height of heights, funktually speaking.
Just program Ain't It Funky on your cd player to wake you up. You WILL get up and dance in the shower.
Good God!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever recorded - period.......2007-05-08

I first heard this album played in its entirety on a local soul radio station in New Orleans on New Year's Day in 1996. I was hanging out at a friend's apartment in an old acadian-style house just a few blocks from Tipitinas. The DJ was taking phone calls from listeners who were calling in with their New Year's resolutions. I remember on old gentleman calling in saying "from now on, I'm only going to drink when I'm by myself or when I'm wit somebody". The driving funk of James Brown live in the background was totally infectious! None of us could sit still - we danced and spun and jumped around until we were all breathless and falling down on the floor laughing. Just when we thought we were going to get a break, JB would plow into another crazy energized funk masterpiece, and we were on our feet again, dancing like maniacs - even the people who would normally never dream of dancing with anyone watching. We headed over to the quarter later that day and I found "Love Power Peace" on CD. I had some older James Brown on CD - live at the Apollo, etc. - but THIS was something different. "Love Power Peace" has been my favorite CD of any kind of music ever since. I was fortunate to see James Brown live in concert a couple of years later (I remember seeing him perform on TV as a young child and loved him even then). We listened to "Love Power Peace" all the way to the show and all the way home. The energy and music of "Love Power Peace" IS James Brown. Everybody should own this album.

5 out of 5 stars This tops even your highest expectations.......2007-01-13

Usually for a superstar musician, when archivists uncover some sort of "lost tape" of a show, they will hype it up as the greatest thing EVER. They will make you think that this long lost recording will blow your mind, and will affirm everything that you ever loved about the artist. Invariably, this is NEVER the case. I don't care how big the artist is, I have seen so many Lost Tape Letdowns, I can't even name them all. Miles Davis, Dylan, Beatles, BB King, Zeppelin, Coltrane, Blakey - yes the best of the best have fallen in this regard. Sometimes it makes you wonder, are these guys as good as I thought they were??? Are they a sham???

But guess what? James Brown has Soul to spare. He has Soul to burn. He always did and always will, even in heaven. And when you uncover a Prime Era James Brown Tape, it will NOT disappoint. That is 100% guaranteed. He refuses to lose. When you hear Love Power Peace, you will find everything you love James Brown for, and more. When you play this album, you will be shocked that anyone could have as futuristic sound as the James Brown band had in 1971, even though you have heard this said a million times already. When you think about this show, you will think you would have given practically any material possession you own just to have been there. That's what I still feel. When you think about Phelps' solo, you will rack your brain to come up with any solo in any genre of music including jazz with as much energy, creativity and FUNK as this one. You will wonder how he never had 10 albums of his own.

When you hear LOVE POWER PEACE, you will feel the full force of the James Brown Experience. This Experience was honed with loving skill for almost 20 years before this show. There are few musical artists in the history of the world who can live up to their hype, their Legend, their Ego. James Brown is one of the few, perhaps the one.

5 out of 5 stars ALWAYS REMEMBER JAMES BROWN.......2007-01-13

Since the great has passed on, I figured I would review the cream of the crop from the James Brown catalouge. Recently I reviewed "Say It Live And Loud", another favorite of mine. That particularly is way up there on my faves list, due to the fact that the band in '68 was so damned tight and proffesional, with the man, Maceo movin' the orchestra along. Arguably James Browns best band was that one. Huge. But in 1969, Maceo demanded more money for any futher services, and with just an hour before showtime, James Brown told him to take a hike and called up two kids that had jammed with some chick he was banging at the time... Bootsy and Catfish Collins. They pulled the show out of thin air, which pissed off the crowd that night, who were obviously expecting the tightness and precision that the James Brown Orchestra had come to be known for. What they got was the loose hooks and rythms of the brothers collins, and the beggining of something new... funk.
This is the only live recording of James Brown with Bootsy (he would soon help the Parliament Funkadelic take off) and it shows that James Brown didn't need to rely on his big old orchestra to make good music. In fact, these days, Soul brother number one, is probably better known for what he did after ditching the big band and just jamming loosely wih a couple of stanky funkateers.
This disc is almost the opposite of what Say it Live and Loud is about, but yet still as good and still as powerful. The job gets more than just done here, its louder and grittier than ever. If you are looking for James Brown funk, this is your best place to start.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The $#!+!!!!!!.......2006-11-01

Few albums get me as pumped up as LOVE POWER PEACE (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE is up there). This stuff is so powerful, so hyperkinetic . . . the heavy funk tracks are very uptempo - it's the funkiest funk I've ever heard. I don't even care to hear the slower original studio tracks after grooving on this. Truthfully, I could do without the screaming, or maybe I'd like it better if it wasn't so loud in the mix because I play this stuff LOUD . . . but I just roll with it ya know? Cause James Brown's feelin' it . . . caught up in the exstacy . . . oh, to have been at this show!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2006-03-31

I had to give five stars because I grew up on this album before I heard any of his other stuff. I'm definitely a Stevie Wonder fan and to hear somebody knock the projects that he come out with upsets me. Basically I think its because don't nobody know what good music is. To me, if you are a "true" fan, you would listen to any album, anytime, anywhere! You have certain periods that you want to listen to his works. For instance, If i want to hear real instruments, I pull out his stuff in the 70's. If I want to hear his amazing change in vocals, I pull out the 80's. His stuff in the 90's is a combination of both. Though nobody claims to like this cut, I think You're full of it!! Good music doesn't matter how long a song can be. If u listen to Jazz u know that! And the message on this album is put at his best(along with a time to love). I can't explain how much I love this cd. My dad bought it when it came out cuz he was hooked on "I'm New," and we both fell in love with the record since. If you are sooo concerned about "time limits" and the genre of music that was big in that time period (which was New Jack), Naw, u don't need to buy this joint. If u don't give a damn jus cuz its Stevie and u kno he got sumthin to say, Buy this Joint. I think the only ones you might not feel too much is "My love is with You, and "Sorry," but they will grow on you too. Jus pay attention to what he's singin bout! Holla

4 out of 5 stars Staring Right At 2000 AD.......2005-10-13

Stevie Wonder's last album in just about a decade has only one thing in common with his usual music-the songwriting craft and the melodies are still as catchy as they ever were and he is in good voice.Trouble is for 1995 vintage album most of the music featured here sounds as if it were trying very hard to follow up the New-Jack swing orieted 'Jungle Fever' soundtrack and that is a sound that doesn't seem to mesh well with Stevie's own.Hip-hop and new jack are not his generation and despite his need to be accessible and reach the public he can obviously do so more,as one reviwer said by being himself-not Babyface,Teddy Riley or anyone else.More so then the somewhat ironic 'Jungle Fever' this album contains some very pointed social criticisms in his classic, honest style but he doesn't tend to back up his message with timeless music. This album contains at least one classic-the reggae/synclaviar driven "Tomorrow Robins Will Sing"-going back to his wonderful integration of electronics into pop music."Sorry" is a tune I like because he features Wonder on a house oriented tune-sounds like a leftover from some unreleased follow up to his 'Characters' album from the late 80's.My main reason for liking the song is that new-jack and hip-hop style music dominates most of the rest of this album and new-jack gets on my nerves after awhile. But aside from trying too hard to appeal to the masses it's always good to have new Stevie Wonder music around. So WHY TEN YEARS WAITING FOR THE NEW ONE?As of this writing his new album 'A Time 2 Love' is on it's way out after two years of promotion and false starts! From what I hear Stevie Wonder will be ALOT more himself and NO NO NEW-JACK STUFF!!

3 out of 5 stars Stevie Wonder's "Conversation Peace".......2005-08-14

Once again Stevie Wonder proves his genius in the music field. A very thought provoking CD with strong messages regarding social issues. My personal favorite is "Take The Time Out", it basically states we as humans are apart of everyone's existance.
This is Stevie's last CD and I can't wait for the release of " A Time To Love ."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-07-02

What a fresh and hopeful sound. Wonder's hope about the world shines through on every track. A super CD. I'm glad I purchased it.

4 out of 5 stars Stevie's Conversation Peace.......2005-01-28

I decided when I started to collect Stevie vast amount of music, I would start at his latest stuff- thus the first album I have is Conversation Peace- At first it didnt really impress, the music didnt really seem innovative except for tracks like
"Rain Your Love Down", "Taboo to Love", "Sensuous Whisper"
However, after repeated listens, there is a lot to appreciate-
Rain Your Love Down makes you singalong, which I bet what Stevie wants so grace and love can be upon us all.

Edge of Eterity has the slick lyrics that Stevie is saying what he wants, and getting what he gets- a sexy lady. The repeating base with the horns really wants to dance, definitely something to pump out the stereo- though my only complaint thats its a bit long for its own good, if you arent dancing.

Taboo to Love is perhaps the best track on the album. The backing violins and keyboard guitar gives you sense of an inner struggle to love or not love again, which is how Stevie makes music so you can truly feel the meaning of what hes trying to say. The lyrics are top notch too, and his singing is strained purposely- just awesome. Very remininsent of "If its Magic"

Take Your Time Out is the best social song he has on here. At first the beginining sounds a bit silly- with the light keyboards and sound effects, but once the base comes in with Stevie blazing vocals. Similar to Rain Your Love Down in a social mentality.

Im New is probably longer than it needs to be espically since the third verse just seems tacked on compared to the beautiful lyrics of the first and second verse. Stevie gets Take 6 to act as base, and brings a warmth to it. The percussion will have you bouncing as well, and the lyrics are just beautiful. Love the guitar solo at the end, though I think it would have done well to replace the last verse.

My Love Is With You falls prey to just being all over the place- the rythmns are there, as well as the great base, but the lyrics dont move you- and Stevie singing seems out of place to carry across the message. The best part of the song is where the chant "Ban the handgun" which is just powerful to end it with, but he doesnt, it follows up with some operator nonsense. Not nessesarily BAD, but not moving either.

Treat Myself is kind of that song thats saying more than that could be understood. I think the lyrics give you a way to give yourself some peace, like meditation. Simple straightforward songwriting prevails in this song. the light pop feel works for this uplifting song, and great harmonica solos within the song take it up another notch. And his singing is just great.

Tomorrow Robins Will Sing
For some reason, Eddie Shines apperance would had made more sense in a live cut, like say "Natural Wonder" . For a song that celebrates the tommorow, the studio version seems somewhat subduded. Nevertheless it works very well. The lyrics arent any complaint, and flow around the beats very well for me.

Sensuous Whisper works for me. Its saucy and sexy and I love the piano work. Plus Anita Baker's vocals may be understated, but work well in the chorus- which Stevie excells at. Very dancable too without it being nessesarily overlong.

For Your Love only problem is that it takes too long to get to the vocals! Otherwise, its a sweet declaration of love- cheesy, but with Stevies highest vocal ranges being heard, sincere and believable

Cold Chill heats things up once more, with the drumming which we can assume its Stevie (yay!) and the guitars and solos are just awesome. Lyrically its sound and I like how its about a woman mistreating a guy maybe because hes being too full of himself.

Sorry is a misstep, In my opinion. its sure experimental, and insturmental wise, its sound, but the lyrics arent moving nor is Stevie's singing

Conversation Peace almost makes it but the lyrics, while consice and to the point dont work for the message of a Conversation Peace. And also the last verse gives you feeling that hes talking to Christians which excludes a lot of other peoples. Love the music though.

Conversation Peace at first doesnt accomplish its goal for me; too many love songs all though good, dont address a bevy of issues that Stevie could have written about. Despite all of its blemishes, its a deep album, with songs most R and B artists would crave to have. I'd give 3 3/4 stars, but you cant, this works

5 out of 5 stars on the WAR-path!.......2004-05-30

Too bad this CD got overlooked for the most part. It's also too bad that radio didn't find it enough to their liking to play it more and give it the exposure it deserved. WAR was one of the great bands to emerge form the 1970's. The interacial outfit jammed hard funk and grooves like few others dared to attempt (Sly & The Family Stone clearly the acception). When "Peace Sign" came out it once again combined the famous rythems that WAR became legendary for. Then they added those classic twists of Latino vibes into the mix in just the most perfect of ways.

"Peace Sign" should have been huge! It's one of the band's best efforts by far. One listen to the title track proves that notion hands down. Right behind that is (in my opinion) the best song on this disc, "East L.A.," and within moments you know you are in for a helluva ride. "East L.A." has that good feeling vibe to it that reminds me of their 1976 mega-classic, "Summer." This is another perfect summer song that makes it impossible not to feel good and forget your troubles even if it's just for a few magic moments!

Overall, with excellent songs like "Wild Rodriguez," "Da Roof" (KILLER keyboard riff!!!), and the ballad, "I'm The One (Who Understands)," this is a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED classic in the truest sense. "Peace Sign" shows again and again what a great band WAR was, is, and always will be. BUY IT...YOU'LL LIKE IT!

5 out of 5 stars Gentlemen are in their prime.......2004-02-19

You have to remember these gentlemen are in their prime, they sound really cool if you've seen the Video, Harold Scott can still ride a mean Harley and looks BAAD as ever, sounding more than OK, UBOK is from someones memory.....Vocals in the back are hard to hear but amusing if you can get what you think you hear or maybe not, kick back and light up and relax and enjoy, like you used to, many decades ago. PEACE!

5 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC WAR CD! PEACE SIGN ROCKS!.......2002-10-26

3 out of 5 stars Nice reunion album.......2001-11-27

Since 1983, War has reunited a number of times, but only to play live at places like state fairs. Released in 1994, this is War's first studio album in 11 years. Four of the original members appear on at least some of the songs.

This album is 70 minutes long with most songs right at 5 minutes. There are a couple of extended numbers at 7 and 10 minutes.

There is a mixture in styles on this album. Most of the songs sound similar to older War material. There are some very good songs and music. But, some of the songs are more disco/pop oriented, in the style of the Commodores or Earth Wind and Fire. While these songs aren't that good, they are better musically than anything by the Commodores.

Overall, there is nothing fantastic on this album, but there are some very good tracks and nothing stinks. On first listen, I would have only given it three stars, but as I listened to it more closely, I got to appreciate the music. If you throw out 3 or 4 of the lesser tracks, you are still left with over 40 minutes of fairly good music.

If you already have everything by War, then this would be an OK album to get. If not, you should get the earlier material first.

4 out of 5 stars War enters the '90's.......2000-07-31

While not their best ("Life Is So Strange" and "The World Is A Ghetto" share that honour), "Peace Sign" is a respectable return for the band after a decade of sporadic touring and recording. War's passion for social justice, lean funk and racial integration remains blessedly intact, and such cuts as 'Homeless Hero', 'East LA' and the classic title track suggest that their message is timeless and still vital. A fine cd from funk's best visionairies.

2 out of 5 stars The Jones Girls on Philadelphia International Records.......2007-02-02

This CD is a combination of the trio of sisters' first two of four albums on Philadelphia International Records, 1979's "The Jones Girls" and 1980's "At Peace With Woman", plus a b-side ("bonus track").

THE JONES GIRLS & AT PEACE WITH WOMAN consists of 17 songs; tracks 1-8 from their 1979 self-titled PIR debut, tracks 9-16 from 1980's "At Peace With Woman", and "Eternally" (track 17), the b-side to the single "Dance Turned Into Romance". Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 75:51. Booklet includes an essay by Tony Rounce, several photographs, and track recording information. Sound quality is excellent.

In the absence of readily available compilations of The Jones Girls' music, this is the best disc available which includes their big hit "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" and "Who Can I Run To?" (the latter remade by R&B quartet Xscape in 1995). While the music is enjoyable and the vocals tight, I was not amazed by the songs included here (They don't compare to Labelle, Honey Cone, or The Pointer Sisters). But this is a great release for fans of The Jones Girls, who may be interested to know their third & fourth PIR albums are available on another Edsel CD.

Notes: "You Gonna..." runs 4:29, not 5:17, as indicated in the booklet. Disappointingly, the 12" version of "You Gonna..." is not included. Most of the songs are mid-tempo grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Real Singing From Some Real Divas.......2006-04-15

Shirley, Brenda and the late Valorie really gave us some slamming music. The First Two albums "The Jones Girls" and "At Peace With Woman" are total gems. Gamble and Huff crafted the most sensual, creamy sounds I have ever heard. Shirley's 5-octave voice shines throughout it all. Form the "Grey Album", I enjoyed every last track. My favorite is "You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else" which is a smoky, funky affair. I was just a lad when I heard this. Totally off the chain. From "The Beach Album", every track was on fire. My faves are "Dance Turned Into A Romance", "While I'm Gone", "I Just Love The Man" and the extra bonus track ""Eternally". These two are must haves.
Honestly speaking, Destiny's Child are no match vocally for my girls. Shirley could actually knock all three of them without breaking a sweat. If you want real divas, cop this!

Valorie, I miss U!

While you're listening to Pops' shimmering gospel-blues electric guitar , realize that he -invented- this style of playing. Having lived and worked well into his eighties seems to have caused Mr. Staples not to get his due for just how far back he started, and how influencial he's been on modern guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Pure heaven.......2002-01-15

I was sitting in traffic flipping stations when I heard a song I'd never heard before.. it was smooth and perfect. Blues at its sweetest. "Down in Mississippi" stayed with me for a long time after. I knew I had to have a copy. When I heard the rest of the album I was blown away. Take classic Mississippi Delta blues and mix in a generous gospel quality and you get one of the finest albums I've ever heard. If you're new to either style, I recommend starting here. You will not be disappointed. Close your eyes, sit back and listen and you can almost feel yourself being transported back to the Deep South. Lose yourself in what music should be.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Songs & Quality Sound.......2001-11-14

One of the best gospel recordings ever made, Pop Staples worked with the best in the business to give us a polished gem of a masterpiece. Some of the songs, such as This May Be The Last Time, have been on previous Staple Singers albums but here they get a contemporary treatment. Guest artists include Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, and Ry Cooder. Mavis, Yvonne and Cleotha Staples join him, with Mavis taking lead on Pray On My Child. Some may find the album sounds uneven with five different production teams, but I enjoyed the styles that each brought the recording. For example, Ry Cooder brings a pared-down rootsy sound to the production of the delta blues material that reminds us of where the music came from, on songs such as Down In Mississippi, and I Shall Not Be Moved. Willie Mitchell brings in Jackson & Love of the Memphis Horns for a more urban sound on America. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Disc Very Soulful.......2000-03-21

Pops Staples sounds Strong on this set.His Voice&Guitar work are Solid here.Peace to The Neighborhood is a Gem.also Great Performances from other Artists such as The Great Bonnie Raitt.a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect synchronicity of blues, gospel, and soul........1999-03-20

The music speaks for itself. Check out "Down in Mississippi". This CD will grow on you. One of my top ten favorites of all time. Be careful though, it is so good that one does not enjoy the rest of their classic blues collection as much. The "Father Father" is also good but "Peace to the Neighborhood" is truly a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Their best song EVER is..................2004-11-02

....I'm At Your Mercy!!!!!!!!!!! I saw them perform this song LIVE in early 80s and I am telling you these sistahs turned it out! It was so soulful, harmonizing, sultry and you could tell they were singing from their hearts or thinking about a current or past love in their lives. They put their ALL into this song and every song they performed that night! You MUST have this CD if nothing else, for "I'M AT YOUR MERCY." I even have some of their vinyl's that I still love to play. I am so sad that Valorie Jones passed on.

When I first heard You gonna make me love somebody else I knew i had to find out who sung that song. Ever since i fell in love with the vocals of the jones girls they have a beautiful harmony together and they kind of remind me a little of the emotions with there sound. the song i just love the man is one of my favorites and also nights over egypt, who can I run to. There voices are amazing. Then in the eighties when heard Do you get enough get enough love I knew that Shirley Jones was one of the jones girls because the sound that she had. So I am truly glad they made a Best of the Jones girls CD because Good Soul Music like that is very hard to find. Jones girls I just want to say that ladies you have been truly blessed with wonderful voices Keep up the good work and remember you have fans out here who do appreciate your music God Bless!!!!!!!

WhatsItGonnaBe? This Double CD collectors edition shows the Jones sisters in full voice over late 70's/early 80's trax. Although not all smash hits in their day, all 4 of their albums (1st & 2nd of which feature here)have reached "classic status". The funk/orchestral Philly sound of Gamble & huff is evident, but (dance turns to romance) and the Dexter Wansel penned song (When I'm Gone)really take it back to the essence. Excellent purchase!! This is my lullaby. I fall asleep to it, I relax to it. I like how it weaves the songs I know and the sounds of home to bring me to that safe place--at home on the island and in God's arms. Dino skillfully, on the loom of his piano strings and with the help of exotic sounds, weaves a God-filled story in this Rythm of Peace. My friends want copies and and I would definitley recommend it--even if you dont know God. Here you find a taste of Him in nature, strings, rythm and--peace.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Edwin Star.......2007-06-07

It is dificult to rate this cd as one unit, becaues they are both
so dramatically different."War&Peace" is a waist of time. There are nothing but fillers on here. "War" and "Adios Senorita" are the only cuts
with any energy. "Time", the other single, is a feble attempt to copy
the style of Norman Whitfield. The arrangements are horrible and bland.
Involved" was one of the final collaborations between Norman Whitfield
and Barrett Strong. That lp is worth the purchase of this cd. Edwin's
version of "Ball of confusoin", with the excellent backing of the
Undisputed Truth, is laid back and intense. "Stop the War" has always
been more on the money than the single "War". They deleted "Way over
there", which is a good thing, because it had no busines being there
in the first place. The two bonus cuts I could also have done without.
They should have included"You've got my soul on fire" and "take me clear
from here". If you like classic Norman Whitfield you'll like "Involved"

3 out of 5 stars the good and bad.......2003-08-24

The Involved portion of this CD is fantastic. Edwin Starr was way ahead of his time. The War and Peace portion is very weak. Except for the song War (which was included in both the LP versions) the others songs from the War and Peace portion just don't fit the theme. These two alblums really should not have been combined. They both have entirely different moods. One focuses on social commentary and the other just sits there (after the first song)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite album of all time.......2005-12-11

The fact that this masterpiece is out of print is a testament to the sad state of the music industry today. Tommy Sims has been writing, producing, and performing on countless projects for the better part of 20 years, working with such musical greats as Bruce Springsteen, Michael McDonald, Cece Winans, and Israel & New Breed. This, however, is the first time that Tommy has ever been front and center, having written most of the songs, played the majority of the instruments (except for the drums), sang lead on almost everything, and producing the entire project.

The process of putting Peace and Love together took upwards of 5 years for Tommy to finish, and the result is an obvious labor of love. The album is filled with the far-ranging influences of Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Croce, and countless others that I'm unfortunately not aware of.

When I first bought this CD in 2000, it did not leave my CD player for three months. I am also personally responsible for buying about a dozen copies to introduce friends to the excellence that is Tommy Sims. Unfortunately, now that the disc is out of print, I can't afford to buy extra copies for friends, but it's well worth the money to pick up a copy for yourself.

While it's understandable why the album was never a rousing success (mainly the lack of an identifiably "radio-friendly" single), it's still beyond me why it didn't gain a bigger following. Do what you must to track down a copy of Peace and Love - you will not be disappointed...

5 out of 5 stars NOT of this world! Turn it up!.......2005-02-19

I like things that don't get popular attention. This gem by Tommy is a nugget of gold in waste land of what world believes is music! Surprised and delighted by the production that still
is fresh listenings. W O W! REAL music worth every penny! If your stuck listening to whats popular, or those idle throats vibrating to remakes your stuck alright. If your longing, or dying for something good PLEASE BUY THIS MAN'S CD! You'll be recharged and richer for it! Now thats value :)

5 out of 5 stars IF MTV REALLY NEW GOOD MUZIK.......................2004-05-18

If MTV really knew music.....this man would get lots of airplay. Tommy Sims is a breath of fresh air to the music world where all you need to get a good record these days is scantily clad women in videos, a catchy hook, some profanity of some kind, and good hook ups........and you got urself a hit! Tommy Sims is TRUE talent......songwriting, and musical arrangement at it's BEST (Stevie Wonder (sorry Stevie), R.Kelly, and Elton John eat your heart out). This guy is now my favorite song writer......and he is the most underrated songwriter and musical/vocal arranger out there. Now to the album. Oh man.....where do I start? "It Don't Matter To The Sun" sounds like a song Elton John would write and sing. "Write One This Way" sounds like a song Stevie Wonder would definitely write and sing. With the mellow keyboard and the synthesizer chords in the background, it could've been a song fit for Songs In The Key Of Life, easily. However, what I like about Tommy is that while you can kind of tell who his inspirations are by just listening to the grooves, he keeps his identity intact, and has his own style. He isn't trying to be like anyone. That's what separates the greats from the copycats.Anyway, I could say good things about every song on the album, "Ballad of Sophie" (sheer genius by the way), "When You Go", "Alone", there's is not one bad song on this album. If you listen to it and find a blemish, u don't have a clue about REAL music. You'd probably think that Ashanti and Britney Spears are musical geniuses. My brightest spots on this album? No.1)"New Jam", I could listen to that song all day and night, (has an Isley Brothers feel to it at the start too). No.2) "Way It Used To Be", the only song that sounds mainstream R&B-ish on the album, it could easily get play on Hip-Hop/R&B stations across the country( but dey ain't ready fo dis! Dey wanna play Ashanti!!!). Last but certainly not least, No.3) Love's Patience, I can't describe this one in words, sheer genius once again. Tommy, you are truly blessed w/ talent. Stay true to God and yourself man.

5 out of 5 stars Into the stratasphere!!!!!!!.......2003-12-12

I think Tommy and this album surpass stars....but rather should be rated by galactic proportions!!! It's the type of project you can be proud to say you own. It's the type of project that is not just about album sales but about quality. My absolute favorite track is 'Sophia'....the string arrangement is mad!!!. His acoustic touches are clean and his vocal tone is unique. This is a must have for the professional, budding, and amatuer musician.

5 out of 5 stars MUSICAL GENIUS.......2003-08-27

I would give this album 100 stars if possible. I can't believe
the world is sleeping on this. It is music at its finest. THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE!!!
It captures all music genres without being overwhelming. I believe every instrument on the planet must have been used. I see and hear music differently now. GET THIS ALBUM!!! IT'S WORTH IT!!!
