Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

This cd is a classic. I love this album. This is the oldest cd I have by him. John P Kee and New Life is just an awesome group. Their music is just something that you will have to love.


"We Walk By Faith" is an awesome song to open up this cd. Vanessa Bell Armstrong is just awesome.
"He's Able" is a nice worship song. Shelia Lakin is just awesome.
"You can Make It" this is a song that encouarge me everytime I listen to it. This song is antheam in my life
"Wave it Away" is another one of my favorite song. Issac and John did an awesome job on lead vocals.
"New Life" is a testimony for me. The Lord gave me NEW LIFE this is awesome
"Made up Mind" is a nice song. The music is a little weak but this song is all right
"Pressing My Way" is the best song. Na-Na kills the song. She rips this song out. This is my favorite song
"He wont leave you" is a nice song
"We glorify" is the best song. Once again Vanessa Kills on the lead

I consider myself a Christian who is still growing and John P. Kee is one of my spiritual mirror images. I thank God for blessing this man and allowing him to touch my heart through his music.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ", September 11, 2006

The "best version" of the "Merry Widow" is NOT this one. The best version is the one with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved that rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note LOUDER than the chorus---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, the Bronhill CD is made in Holland and "there is one left", so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

THE MERRY WIDOW, Franz Lehar's dizzying and delightful operetta chestnut, is given the grand treatment in this highlights album featuring Joan Sutherland.

There have been many widows (including June Bronhill, Anna Moffo, Beverly Sills), though Joan Sutherland's WIDOW has always been especially grand. The supporting cast on this recording features Werner Krenn as Count Danilo with Valerie Masterson as Valencienne, Regina Resnik as Zo-Zo and John Brecknock as Camille, with Francis Egerton, John Fryatt, Graeme Ewer and the Ambrosian Singers.

Sutherland's performance as Hanna Glawari is full of masterful strokes and she approaches the score with a twinkle in her eye, aware of the comedy in the piece. Richard Bonynge conducts the National Philharmonic Orchestra and they are especially chill-inducing with the Overture.

All-in-all a superlative recording at a bargain price.

Unfortunately this CD was made from the Australian TV tapeing of The Merry Widow, a shame that the microphones are not of high enough quality to capture the really fine performances, it is hard enough to understand what is being sung when properly recorded let alone when the equipment stinks, however if you enjoy Joan Southerland as much as I do you can overlook the flaws in the recording and just get carried away with the voice, it would be nice if a libretto had been included, a rarity today, that used to be common in the era of the LP

Several years ago we bought this great collection for my mother-in-law, who's in her 80s, and while a lot of the music was familiar to me and my husband, she knew every song. Now it's one of our favorites, too. Anyone who loves music will appreciate this. The double-disc set contains many memorable tunes, from Hugo Winterhalter's "Canadian Sunset" to Jimmy Dorsey's "So Rare".

I have really enjoyed this CD. The music is well-paced to get the walker warmed up and then working hard. I am 50 years old and of an average build and it's a great 1 hour walk. A younger, more-fit person might not be challenged as much by it, but it's perfect for me!

I hate to exercise and the treadmill was boring! So in desperation I bought a CD to listen to while I walked. When I put this CD in and close my eyes I am transported to a place of Praise and Worship. The time passes by fast and although I am tired physically from the walk my mind is refreshed. The songs are slower at the beginning and go to a faster pace in the middle and then slow down again at the end. It also gives you the choice as to whether to walk a half hour or an hour.

    Played this at my father's deathbed at the hospital over and over. It was loaned to us by a nurse there. Words cant describe the scene as prayers were be ushered up to God.

    Without bringing up an image of a popular television preacher, let me define the singing on Voce as that in which one could picture a Crystal Cathedral.
    Many of you have, perhaps, been brought up in traditional churches with fine choirs. But there is a sense of transcendence one experiences when you hear a fine choir, sometimes singing accapella,with crystal clear words, harmony and spirit that evokes the sense of a large, tall, other-earthly edifice that contains singers and worshipers who are seeking the presence of God and who have been visited by Him.
    Voce speaks to the great pains of life through the tune "Agnus Dei", as well as airy lyrics and emotions that are affected by swirling voices accompanied by occasional angel wings.
    OK, I have gone over the top to express that if you would like one CD that is not your tradition church music album, Voce will be a feast for your ears whenever you listen to it. Also, a great CD by which to read the Bible.

    Magical, marvelous recording. Agnus Dei is simply awesome, and Sanctus awesomely simple, Never Weather Beaten Sail a joy. This recording captures the spirit and heart via voice; I listen to it again and again. I cannot recommend any classical vocal recording more highly.

    I first heard Voce several years ago when I was traveling to Australia as a chaperone for a youth group. Somehow I knew I was going to need something relaxing to listen to on the long plane ride and to drown out the teenagers' music. Voce not only accomplished that feat, but has become a beautiful appendage to my life. With all the noise combustion in the world today, it's difficult not to listen to something, unless you live in a monastery. And believe me, after enjoying Voce, I have definitely considered checking into one. Listening to Voce cleanses the musical palate and completely satifies the appetite for music when you aren't certain what you want to hear. My soul takes flight at the first notes of the exquisite and heavenly sounds of The Trinity College Choir. Like a child with his lullabies, Voce has become my most effective sleep aid. Listening to this music at bedtime brings the most peaceful sleep, as though I were cradled in the very arms of Almighty God Himself. The prayerful nuances of this great choir soothe the most savage of beasts. For those who don't normally prefer acapella choral music, I sincerely believe you will be surprised at your own positive reaction to this recording. I'll never be without it.
