Is it nu metal?.......2007-04-15
I dont remember how I first heard of this cd, but im glad I did. Its a great cd and well worth a listen. I dont know if i'd call it nu metal, do they have a dj in the band? The follow up cd wasnt as heavy as this cd and disappointed me.
Nu Metal ~ Sam Kinison?.......2007-04-02
Nu Metal is far from my favorite Genre of music but if you like(d) Sam Kinison then you will probably like this CD. The lead singer yells like Kinison and the cursing is all Sam on this CD. Who knows maybe he isn't dead afterall - hence song #3 "I Can't Die"... Happy April Fool's Day
the lyrics and the spirit.......2005-11-06
yeah so there not all that talented. Eyehategod blows any crap like this out of the water. oh yeah if any of you above like this kid who still lilstens to limp bizkit once in a while you guys should all just keep your mouths shut on your musical opinions cuz all nu metal is horrible and you shouldnt have an excuse for EVER having liked it.any i just have to give these guys some credit. anyway any band who names there album inches from the mainline has my respect.
Followers, Not Leaders..........2005-08-24
The late 90's and early 00's saw the rise of nu-metal, a sub-genre populated by primarily zero-talent musicians constantly copying each other album after album; basically the equivalent to what emo music is today. And yes, I admit, I enjoyed many nu-metal bands myself. Hell, for an (extremely dark) extended period of time, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were my favorite bands. Then I picked up the guitar, learned myself a thing or two, and realized that these musicians truly had no talent, absolutely none. But today I still do listen to some nu-metal as a guilty pleasure. Hell, I'll even spin a Bizkit disc every now and then. But I most certainly take it seriously. The last time I thought of Fred Durst's music as powerful and beautiful was when I was 10, and I swear to never again. But I admit, they produced some catchy, yet simple and idiotic, rock songs. A slight redeeming quality. Now, Slaves on Dope are another story. They have no redeeming quality.
I tried to get into these guys about a year ago. That wasn't the time that I really liked nu-metal, so it's no surprise I didn't enjoy this album too much. So I tried to give it another chance a few days ago, and it truly is a bad CD. Shoddy musicianship, that cliché, horribly down-tuned, sloppy guitar sound, the simplistic drum and bass work...and the lyrics...GEESH...not to mention the vocals were bland and unoriginal. Oh, this guy can scream AND sing? I'm sorry, I thought Fear Factory had already done that in what, 1992 or somethin'?
The point is this band was forgotten for a reason. They were a trend-following Korn-wannabes, completely null of any musical talent and / or creativity. Had the have tried to create a new sound, well, hey, they might be remembered. They might even have started a new trend. But sadly, they took the path every other band in the world took at the time, and I'm sure you can now find about 20 copies of this at your local CD stores used album bin.
production is sloppy but music is good.......2005-01-02
slaves on dope may scare away some based on their name, but they just produce a heavy, numetal sound.there are several standout tracks, including "pushing me", "i can't die","b**** slap",and "no more faith".every song is fairly listenable.the only donwfall is jason rockman's vox can become quite annoying,as his screams are somewhat higher pitched.also, many of the songs sound very similar, causing them to melt into each other, making the album sound like one giant track.all in all though, they are quite original for the genre, and i give them kudos for that.for fans of reveille, endo, and taproot.

Album Description
When Procol Harum's Gary Brooker wanted to organize a concert to help raise money for the beautiful 13th Century church of St. Mary & All Saints in rural Surrey, England, he not only chose some of his finest musician friends to help out with the cause, but he also went on to record the event and release it on a fan club cd in a very limited run of 1000 units. This rare release Within Our House went on to become a highly collectable recording when the obvious happened as it sold out in a matter of days. However, with Gary Brooker's blessings, Friday Music is now releasing this fine live recording for the first time in North America, to go along with the extensive Procol Harum Remasters series.
Procol Harum classics like "A Salty Dog" and "Holding On" get the five star treatment from this eclectic group of musicians. Brooker's vocals and piano work are stellar throughout the recording and his emotional readings of the gospel and religious material is second to none, as his interpretation of the classic Elvis Presley hit "Peace in the Valley" really conveys the true meaning of this charitable event.
Other Procol Harum favorites like "The Long Goodbye" and the classic "Nothing but the Truth" are truly inspiring in the church environment, as the album closes with a heart rendering version of their number one classic "A Whiter Shade of Pale."
The applause you will hear from this lucky audience will attest that this was a successful night for everyone involved with this wonderful event. This newly remastered Friday Music disc bring this fine concert to light for the first time in North America. Procol Harum fans rejoice!
Customer Reviews:
Odd But Compelling.......2005-04-25
This benefit concert, recorded September 28, 1996 in a big old stone church, features an odd combination of spirituals, madrigals, old Procol tunes and one Elvis impersonation. Backing Gary Brooker are a gospel choir, string quartet, and the Gary Brooker Ensemble, four musicians who are NOT introduced as the New Procol Harum.
Procol fans will surely enjoy the Procol tunes, but the unabashed religious nature of many of the other tunes may throw them off. The acoustics are grand and Gary sounds great, but one wonders exactly which market this release is aimed for. Hopefully the concert raised all the funds needed, because the program here -- part classical, part Christian, part rock & roll -- seems destined to find few devotees of all three.

Customer Reviews:
The Avalons!!!.......2007-06-01
This would be just another rehash of "B" sides and left overs from the record company catalogs, and I have given it a lukewarm three because there is no two and a half. What makes me want to give this album a FIVE is solely due to presence of one group,The Avalons. The Avalons who sing "My Heart's Desire",are as much a premier and polished group as ever came out of the fifties. Hell, they would be right up there with any of the famous groups like the Whispers, who later became Ray, Goodman and Brown, The Moonglows, the Four Tops, the Channels, the Temptations or any of the other better known elite groups of that era. The Avalons version of "My Heart's Desire" is the 1950's rolled up into it's purest essence. Forget about Earth Angel or In the Still of the Night, both are fine numbers; but this song, Hey,"fagettaboutit"!!If you are an old Doo Wopper,it is impossible to listen to this song and not think of those slow dances with that special secret memory; you know the one- the one only you know about. THE one that you have never quite forgotten or gotten over through the years; even through the successes and failures, the sorrows and the joys, the Careers, the Husbands,Wives and lovers,Kids and GrandKids. The one person who has not, unlike the rest of us,aged a day since we saw them that last time. That is why I suggest you listen to this song while alone, let nothing interfere with your memories. This song by the Avalons will carry you back, like a worm hole in space to nineteen fifty something real quick. I cannot for the life of me,understand what happened with this group, why they are not more well known and why did they not ever produce an album? I do know that they went through some personnel changes and spent some time in Canada, so I can only assume that they had a lousy manager. There should be so much more material available from these guys! Unfortunately,we will never know the answers to all of those questions and we will have to collect their music, sparse as it is, one song or record at a time; if you can find any. You will look for more, because one listen and you will become a fan. There are a couple of decent 50's type numbers on this volume but the Avalons are the "piece de resistance". If you are a gray haired child of the fifties, listen to the Avalons sing "My Heart's Desire" and remember just how damn good it was.
