One of contemporary Christian music's founding fathers, Phil Keaggy (remember Glass Harp, '60s music fans?) is also one of its finest musicians. Acoustic Sketches, which won the 1999 Dove Award for best instrumental album, is a testament to Keaggy's long-admired guitar playing. The 19 tracks here allow him to build flowery and intricate variations upon a theme; at times Keaggy's recording nearly shimmers with a magical sound. "Del's Bells" and the end tune, "Legacy," draw admitted comparisons to virtuoso Michael Hedges, while "Nellie's Tune," "Spanish Fantasy," and the moody "On Some Distant Shore" strongly evoke European images. Keaggy fans will also be pleased as he occasionally samples his voluminous body of recorded work, quoting riffs from past sessions. Guitar players of any genre will appreciate the deft skill displayed on Acoustic Sketches. --Michael Lyttle
Customer Reviews:
Acoustic Sketches.......2007-05-21
I knew that Phil Keaggy was a wonderful guitar player but he really demonstrated his talent. He far exceeded my expectations. He does not deliver average or even common sounds. Your expectations of how he will play will miss the mark because he demonstrates such a high level of skill. The CD is entertaining and at the same time keeps you wanting to hear the entire CD without stop. This is a real example of someone that loves to play and pushes the envelope of talent. I will buy more of Phil Keaggy. Can't wait to hear more from him.
Supreme Acoustic Intelligence.......2006-06-30
A box bursting with exquisite riff-candies infused to the max with Segovian proficiency, enharmonics, harmonics and unmatched style. All guitarists should own this. If you pride yourself on acoustical guitar playing and haven't heard these pieces, consider yourself robbed. Mr. Keaggy is one of the, if not the, best acoustical guitarists in the world.
Play 'em and Sleep . . ........2006-05-24
Load this CD along with Beyond Nature, In The Quiet Hours, and Lights of Madrid on your iPod playlist, and enjoy a very relaxing sleep. Great music to sleep, study, or relax by. As I've said before, you can't go wrong with these or any of Phil's work.
Wonderful Collection of Guitar Instrumentals.......2005-10-09
In his comments on each tune, Phil Keaggy begins by referring to these pieces as "loose sketches," and for the most part that's what they are; not necessarily fully realized songs, but simply sketches. But these are wonderful sketches, to be sure. Listen to the classical influences of "Rivulets," Michael Hedges tapping style on "Del's Bells," the Chet Atkins-inspired picking on "Paka," the bluesy funk of "Jam in the Pocket," and the haunting "Legacy."
On most of the tracks, it's simply Keaggy and his guitar (or accasionally accompanying himself), but on the spiritual "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" he is joined by a second guitarist on slide guitar and a tuba(!) player to marvelous effect.
All told, this is a very enjoyable album, and perhaps my favorite Phil Keaggy CD. [Running Time - 63:20] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
The Ever Versatile Keaggy.......2005-07-15
Amazing as always, Phil Keaggy has managed to successfully excel in many forms of music; beautiful, bluesy, jazzy, and a little bluegrass thrown into the mix. This is a great cd to listen to any time of day - anyplace.

Just so-so.......2007-02-28
This didn't greatly capture my attention, though Keaggy is certainly a great guitarist. You may like it though. It's a change for Keaggy doing instrumental blues/rock, etc.
Keaggy unleashed!.......2006-06-22
I suppose I count myself as a PK fan, with over 20 of his albums in my collection. But the ardent fans are the ones who talk daily on PK email digests and probably have 40 plus of his 50 or more albums. Those fans all would have this album already and would have heard a number of these tracks on his Premium Jams collection as well. So I am not writing for fans - they won't hesitate to buy. I write for those who may have heard of this wonderful musician and guitarist but never really listened to much of his work. Keaggy who has regularly listed high in the Guitar Player readers polls for fingerstyle and acoustic playing shows us his electric side on this album.
If you like guitar music, particularly classic blues rock then you're in for a treat. This is gritty blues unleashed on all guitars from Parker Flys to Fenders. The accompanying notes are great to check out for who played with him, his inspiration and the equipment and guitars used. Although Keaggy is a great vocalist, lyricist and composer, this album is instrumental all the way through. Although he has added to some of these tracks after the initial recordings, I still found them fresh and inspiring.
Keaggy tips his hat to his influences with blues in the style of Mike Bloomfield and Clapton. There are Hendrixian overtones as well and even a hint of the legato stylings of Holdsworth. But overwhelmingly obvious is his own inimitable style - and it's a joy to hear classic Keaggy riffs reinterpretted and played with freedom. What makes this album of jamming work is that stylistically it is not too diverse. It's all rock and blues - even when he's playing Beethoven's "Ode to Joy". That's probably just as well as Mr Keaggy has already covered everything from rock, pop, fusion, carols and orchestras, hymns to meditative worship on his other albums.
I found these jams more structured than what you may think of a bunch of musos getting together to play over a few chords. But then these are recordings of great musos and most likely some of the best of Keaggy's huge home collection. That brings me to my only criticism. There was more than enough space on the CD for at least another two or three tracks. The people who like listening to these spontaneous jams wouldn't have minded a 15 minute closer as a bonus track or a cover like Crossroads or While my guitar gently weeps. (Or else add a 15 minute Keaggy backing track so that we could join in as well!)
If you have heard his "220" instrumental album, then this is like all the extended solos that you desperately wanted to hear but were faded out on that album. I'd suggest clever improvisation and creativity on the fly is more reflective of what you hear than simply calling these 'jams'. This showcases classic Keaggy on electric including some of the heaviest Keaggy (Phlagan's Flow) I have heard since "Crimson and Blue" and also some of the most traditional blues. If you've not heard Keaggy unleashed before, this is a good album to try!
Phil is blessed with talent !!!! .......2006-03-31
I just got the cd and I was lucky enough to get it from his web site and have it signed by Phil. It`s awsome ,God has blessed Phil with great talent.I`ve been a fan of him since to late 70`s.Inside the cover Phil wrote down notes about each song and the dates they origanate from and who played on it.This is my first time to write a review so I`m not that great. But if your a true Phil Keaggy fan you`ll love it trust me.Songs on the CD inclued, Route Canal, Phlagan`s Flow, Kegworth Speaks, Blueberry Jam , Zee Blues, Sherlock Ohms, Elect Rick, Joyphil, Revisited Jelly, Watt Ever, Prehistrobie K-18, Kegworth Reconsiders

Album Description
This album represents the merging together of three musical parts of the Lord's ministering body; The 2nd Chapter of Acts, Phil Keaggy, and "A Band Called David." During the summer of 1977 the Lord used the combined gifts of these ministries to help unite His body in eighteen cities in the Western U.S.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Concert Recording.......2007-03-30
This is the second of three live recordings 2nd Chapter of Acts did. The first was a two album set with Barry McGuire taking 2/3 of the concert. The third was with Michael and Stormie Omartian, with 2nd Chapter having 2/3 of the concert. This one has 2nd Chapter of Acts and Phil Keaggy splitting it 50/50.
2nd Chapter opens up with the first four songs. For those who don't know, Phil Keaggy played guitar on the second studio project of 2nd Chapter of Acts. Phil's solo on "Hey Whatcha Say" is awesome. Phil then does the middle portion, with 2nd Chapter of Acts coming back and finishing the project.
When this was recorded, both groups had two albums out. Phil did "Another Try" from his third album (a version different and better than the studio version), and Annie Herring did a pair of songs from her first solo album ("Dance With You" and "Grinding Stone"). Original songs to this project included Phil Keaggy's "My Life", the Matthew Ward solo "Psalm 61", and Annie's solo "Receive".
Better than I remembered.......2006-07-03
I wore out 2 copies of the cassette version of these albums when I was in high school and it had been YEARS since I'd heard it, but the music was definitely better than I remembered. I wish I could say that of all of my childhood memories. :) Guitar and vocals are superb and timeless. Great trip down memory lane!
A good celebration of Christian music nostalgia.......2005-07-31
When I first asked Jesus to be my Lord and personal savior in my undergraduate school in late 1976, my best friends introduced me to Phil Keaggy, the Second Chapter of Acts and other contemporary Christian music. My spirit was filled with joy as I listened to Matthew Ward, Anne Herring and Nelly Grieson in harmony. "Easter Song" has become a standard. I have fond memories of Phil Keaggy and his band performing "What A Day". Yes, the Christians in the Western part of USA (that is, west of the Rockies) were one in the Spirit and one in the Lord, and I definitely recommend this 2-record set to anybody who is interested in contemporary Christian music during its heyday.
A favorite live album.......2003-08-09
This is one of the best concert packages ever. Excitement, warmth, power -- it's all here. Keaggy and A Band Called David get progressive on "Rejoice" and even on "Time." The best rendition of "Love Broke Thru" and Matthew Ward at his finest!
Excellent Jesus music by some of the pioneers of the genre.......2003-07-04
For music that is over a quarter century old, this album stands the test of time. My particular favorites are the Keaggy numbers, most of which are live versions of song off his first two albums. The musicianship on this album can hold its own against any music of its period, and blows away much of what is forced onto the public now. If you want to hear authentic Jesus music, when the artists were more concerned about the message than the money, give this a listen. You'll not be disappointed. Favorit song is Keaggy's 'Time', blues/rock ala Cream.

Customer Reviews:
A Master Musician.......2004-01-28
Freehand is the second part of the Acoustic Sketches series. Like the first disk, it is a collection of "sketches", with a few fully developed songs, in which Phil uses six different guitars, the JamMan, and light percussion. As always, Spanish, classical, Irish, folk, and blues influences are heard throughout his guitar work. It has a live feel as we listen to how Phil plays his musical ideas in these creative guitar "sketches". Freehand also includes video clips of Phil playing. He plays melodic and smooth or fast and freewheeling, but always with incredible skill. It's easy listening, but not background music. Once again, Phil Keaggy has delivered another outstanding instrumental showcase of his creativity and immense talent as a guitarist.

Customer Reviews:
Phil Keaggy is a master.......2005-08-13
I first heard this CD on vinyl when I was a teenager. It was my introduction to the new age sound. I have not heard many other artists that can weave sounds together into a seamless fabric like Phil Keaggy.
By the way, Cheri Keaggy is not Phil's Daughter. She is married to his nephew.
Magnum Opus.......2003-12-19
I am not Christian.
I am not a guitarist, though I am a professional musician.
I am not a'Keaggyhead'...
But this is, easily one of the best collections of compositions I have ever heard. In particular, and I need to single this one out, 'March of the Clouds' is as perfect a collection of sounds a human being can put together. As a song, it has everything...ethereal imagery, slow gradual volume and tone. Again, it is....well it is my favorite song. I do not listen to New Age in particular - I am well rounded but - I heard this song about 10 years ago...and either a song touches you or it does not....this one reached in me and pulled something out...something only this song can. Buy it. Experience it.
Keaggy at his best.......2003-07-28
This is my favorite album by Phil Keaggy. As everyone knows, Keaggy is an incredible guitarist, but this album displays his gift for composition and arrangement as well. The title cut is a masterpiece acoustic guitar composition. March of the Clouds takes the listener on an emotional musical journey through the skies and back to earth. While the album cover is reminiscent of the 80s Windham Hill look, the blending of acoustic and electric guitars with piano and synthsizers in this recording are uniquely Phil Keaggy's.
Sorry to rain on this parade, but..........2002-09-24
after all those glowing reviews I was ready to be wowed. Well, Keaggy has "chops" (technique) up the yin-yang. Some of the cuts are even very nice and sweet. But for the most part, I found this album boring and VERY reminiscent of Wyndham Hill aimless, nearly tuneless, noodling, arpeggiating. I keep looking for a worthy successor to Robbie Basho (e.g. Falconer's Arm, Venus in Cancer... now included on "Bashovia"): a guitarist with depth of vision, melodic inventiveness and depth. When you find her or him, please let me know.
Phenomenal work.......2002-02-12
This CD is derivative of the whole instrumental Windham Hill mood that was popular during the late 1980's and Phil Keaggy tells us how it should have been done.
His guitar work is brilliant as usual but his arrangements on this album are pure beauty. My favorite piece, "I love you Lord," is simply the most beautiful instrumental praise music I have ever heard.

The Reason I Fell In Love With The Acoustic Guitar!!!.......2005-07-31
I first heard this record back in 93 and it has been, in one form or another, in my collection ever since. It is to my mind one of the finest guitar recordings ever produced. I am a fan of Andres Segovia, Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and a host of other FS guitarists, so I hope you can appreciate what I mean when I say this.
What Keaggy manages to do here, and sadly only here, is to weave a collection of tunes that provoke the emotions as much as the ear. He has said that he intended the songs on this album to be in the Impressionist veign. And I cannot think of a better decription.
Listening to "A Place of Springs" for instance, one has the impression of a mind struggling with the wieght of the world and with it's own weakness. And in Keaggy's arrangement of Grieg's "Symphonic Dance" we not only hear but truly feel the elation of the instrument (as narrator) at some joyous moment we will never fully comprehend (though I like to imagine it's a wedding dance, or a childs first steps).
It's almost as though the record contains an anthology of songs that tell a story of a life from the guitar's point of view, with the guitar as it's own voice. As always, Keaggy intermingles this collage with his deep spiritual conviction--in fact, every note drips with it.
This is work of a tremendous artist, a musical virtuoso, at the peak of his powers, letting his instrument explore spaces at once too private and too universal for words. It is an amazing and breathtaking way to pass a rainy afternoon. And it rewards frequent replaying. I cannot recommend to highly.
Phil, we are in your debt for this masterpiece.
A Masterpiece.......2005-07-02
This is one of my most cherished albums. It doesn't do all things, but what it does it does so very well. (There is also an instructional video out for guitar fans that contains many BEYOND NATURE songs that is also well done). For me, this album and his LIGHTS OF MADRID are his two finest acoustic instrumental albums. So if you are reading this and you don't have the ablum and have somehow not noticed that EVERY REVIEW IS 5 STARS, go buy this thing right now! It really is a treasure. I remember how one of my brother's friends in high school totally fell in love with this album; I've never seen anyone so moved in such a way by the beauty of music. So whether it is love at first site or something that works in you more slowly, please, for your own good, give it a listen.
Incredible Acoustic Guitar.......2004-07-09
Beyond Nature is an acoustic tribute to C.S. Lewis, and Phil Keaggy again delivers an album full of incredibly beautiful and strongly crafted instrumentals. The focus of the music is the alternate tunings he uses throughout the album, as he showcases his talent for finger-picking guitar. Keaggy is one of my favorite musicians, and this is one of my favorite albums.
Truely a remarkable album..........2004-03-02
This is one of those albums that has never really left my player since I bought it 4 years ago. Keaggy is truely a master of his craft and his songs bring a smile to my whenever I hear them. This is album calmed and relaxed me during some of the most stressful years of my life. Really beautiful and I cannot recommend it more highly.
One of my favorite CDs!.......2003-10-31
I saw Phil Keaggy in concert (in Knoxville, TN in the late 70s and again in Southern California in the 80s) and, like everyone, am quite impressed by his talent. THIS is the CD that puts it all together for me. Like MASTER AND THE MUSICIAN (another GREAT album) each song paints a mind-picture for the listener. This is one I listen to often and (some days) over and over. Another one of my favorites is his album LOVE BROKE THROUGH...a great example of Phil's guitar work and vocals in one of the BEST early Christian rock albums.

A Classic!.......2007-04-11
The master musician weaves another beautiful instrumental piece. As with all his work - this is highly recommended.
220.......2005-02-05
Stunning command of guitar technique, allied to an ability to communicate. Everything instrumental rock should be!
Excellent Instrumental Rock and Blues.......2003-12-17
In a departure from his normally acoustic instrumental offerings (Lights of Madrid, Beyond Nature and Acoustic Sketches), Keaggy offers up a selection of amplified tunes (hence the album title). While most of the music is heavily blues influenced there are a few songs that are a bit off the beaten track for the album such as Tennessee Morning. The work is a tour de force for Keaggy as he displays his impressive skill on the axe as well as his ability to interpret the music with great feeling and nuance (unlike some other guitarists who have profound technical ability but lack the emotional ability to bring a song to life).
I would highly recommend this album for any Keaggy fan as well as for those who like to hear someone just flat out wail. If you like what you hear, you may also wish to check out the outtakes from the recording sessions which can be found on Keaggy's "Premium Jams" two disk set which can be found at www.PhilKeaggy.com
Keaggy delivers a fine rock instrumental.......2003-07-22
220 is and is not what one might expect. It is vintage Keaggy with a few twists. Make no mistake; the cover is certainly indicative of the content, but Keaggy offers a couple of detours along the way. The album opens with "Animal," a rocker with a whiff of southern and classic rock, along with a definite Keaggy-esque opening riff. "Arrow" begins with a reverse-recorded riff, then builds to an emotional crescendo. "Montana" is what the Old West would have sounded like had rock music been invented then. Keaggy uses a war-drum sound and an acoustic bridge. Then comes "Tennessee Morning." It is certainly the softest song on the disc, and carries Keaggy's usual understated acoustic style. His speed and talent are well-known, but on this particular track Keaggy displays his affinity for simplicity. "The Great Escape," no doubt a nod to the classic WWII prison camp film, is one of the most layered, and most urgent tunes. It's also one of the best on the disc. The basic tune has a cinematic ring to it, and about halfway through the song Keaggy breaks into a jam of sorts. "Stomp" is southern-flavored rock, "Highland" is celtic rock (complete with whistle and pipes), and "Beyond this Day" is reminiscent of "March of The Clouds." Track 9, "Ian's Groove," on which Keaggy's son plays drums, is bluesy and twangy, but it can best be described as "greasy." It even includes a live crowd at the beginning of the track. The highlight is Pat Bergeson's harmonica solo. The disc closes with "Watt Ever," a fun three minute jam with Keaggy, Spencer Campbell and Lynn Williams. This is an outstanding disc; it's great road music, and is a good one for the rock fan who's not heard Phil Keaggy.
WHAT AN ORIGINAL TALENT.......2003-02-21
The Hellecasters still set the benchmark for instrumental guitar musik.( but they are 3 ) Johnny A. comes close and Phil is almost there.( and they do it on their own ) This is another very original CD from a true master of the guitar.
ELEGANT METAL might describe the overall flavour, but woudn't do it justice as it dazzles with infinite variety and unpredictability. It is not necessary to pidgeon hole this virtuoso but if you have a passion for the guitar you will be rewarded with a feast of musik that may require you to re-assess
your current guitar heros. Can't wait for the next one to be delivered to OZ.

Keaggy Lights Up the Stereo.......2007-01-10
Phil Keaggy-legendary guitarist , singer , writer takes a slight detour into a more classical/flamenco style in this superb instrumental album.
As always there's plenty to delight the ear-indeed repeated playing is well rewarded.
Every Song Worth The CD.......2002-06-15
"Caliente" on Phil Keaggy's flamenco and Spanish influenced "Lights of Madrid" might be my favorite. But don't make me choose. I'd waver between "Picante" and "Lights of Madrid," but, given a different mood, the whole album is up for grabs. I like it that much. Not a dud tune to be found.
This is an acoustic album. You won't hear Keaggy's Paul McCartney-esque voice. Instead, you'll hear an album which is worth of auto-repeat. You'll be instantly drawn to the rhythms, but never bored by hearing them again.
Although Keaggy is acclaimed as a Christian musician, this is not a worship album, per se. Nor is it a rock album. However, it is a long way from easy listening. This is a guitar player's album, as well as an art music fan's album.
Open the album on your computer and find the sheet music ready to go (in PDF). I'm not a musician, and am unable to tell you much more than that, but they are very printable.
I fully recommend "Lights of Madrid" by Phil Keaggy.

It's A Crowd Pleaser!.......2002-03-24
Outstanding Album! What more can I say that hasn't been said already? ALL the songs on this CD are beautiful. I've played it for co-workers and fussy family members with nice remarks as a result. Looking for music to entertain guests? You can't go wrong with this one! This is Keaggy's best guitar album. If you haven't heard his talent with instrumental music you don't know what you're missing! Even if you're trying to choose a first CD from Keaggy, I still recommend "Lights Of Madrid." On a personal note: I enjoy this CD Very Much. I have ever since day one. Lets just say it's NOT a dust collector.
(I wonder - can a person destroy a CD by playing it to much?)
Phil at his best!.......2001-10-02
In my mind, Phil Keaggy is one of the most inconsistent artists around. His albums range from timeless classics (Beyond Nature, Sunday's Child) to albums so bland they only received a few spins (True Believer comes quickly to mind and just as quickly is forgotten). His latest album, Lights of Madrid, happily falls into the former group with over an hour of compelling, well-crafted acoustic guitar instrumentals that span genres, techniques, and moods. As you may have guessed from the album title, many, but not all, of the pieces show a Spanish influence. Those familiar with Spanish classical guitar will not be disappointed as Phil very capably tackles the legato scales and technical playing required for this genre. Those familiar with Keaggy himself already know that he is a guitar player's guitar player with amazing technical skills, virtuoso skills which often take backstage to the melody and the structure of the song. His best work marries the two, as is evidenced here.
The title track is, of course, very Spanish with an upbeat, catchy rhythm, excellent backing percussion, and a memorable melody that is worked into the amazing guitar playing. In stark contrast is the peaceful "A Field of Flowers" which is simply two acoustic guitars, a cello, and a beautifully emotive melody that would have fit perfectly on the phenomenal Beyond Nature. "Allgeria" consists of many layers of guitars, orchestral strings, and keyboards as a single melody is pursued by each. By combining contemporary songwriting with Hayden-era classical, Keaggy wrote the nine-minute "Overture" for acoustic guitar and chamber orchestra. Here the guitarist has created an amazingly mature classical composition with solid pacing and development of ideas, definitely on par or better than any classical piece written by his hero, Sir Paul McCartney. I could listen to music like this all day... and frequently have since this CD came into my possession. The album closes, aptly, with the return of the Spanish-themed "Caliente", energetic dance music with some ripping xylophone!
The huge variety of tone colors, instrumentation, and melody makes this album so much more than an hour of naked acoustic guitar. If you order now, you'll get an enhanced CD that actually makes sense! Embedded in this CD are detailed tablature transcriptions of twelve of the fifteen tracks, complete with lead and rhythm parts with the solos painstakingly written out. Even without this bonus, however, this album is the best thing Phil Keaggy has written in nearly a decade: an instant classic for guitar freaks and lovers of quality music alike.
Brilliant, beautiful work.......2001-06-21
An album full of lovely Spanish/Latin compositions, stunning acoustic guitar work and lush, sensitive string arrangements.
The song transcriptions provided on Acrobat files are a fantastic bonus for guitarists.
Highly recommended!
