Album Description

A Chant Album from the Sacred Writings of the Sikhs to experience Love.

Prem means the experience of love, deep love. It is the love that you have the courage and wisdom to feel in yourself for yourself, it is the love that God feels for you.

We project ourselves through every moment of time and space whether it is through sounds, thoughts, or feelings. The gift of every human being is to truly express the soul through the intelligence of the mind and body. In order to project the reality of the honest self, the soul, Yogi Bhajan has taught the science of Naad Yoga. Naad means sound current. It is the primal sound that connects the basic elements of the physical body to the etheric elements of the soul. Naad Yoga uses sacred mantras from the writings of the Sikh Gurus in the beautiful poetic language of Gurumukhi. These mantras are traditionally practiced with a straight spine, in a meditative posture. As the mantras are sung the energy of the sound current creates a channel of healing energy through the spinal chord and out the top of the head. In yogic practice we call this the turning of the lotus. Through Naad Yoga the Kundalini energy rises from the base of the spine to the top of the head. At this time the lo! tus flower turns upside down and rains nectar down upon the yogi. In spiritual terms the sweetness of angels caresses each and every cell.

Often times people tell me, " I don't have a good voice, I can't sing." I tell them that the very sound of your voice is what will heal you if you just allow it to be you. By practicing Naad Yoga we can obtain the experience of heaven on earth in our own body. This experience will in turn bring light to the rest of your life simply by the natural flow of energy that you have created within yourself. Prem is my new album that is created so that anyone can take it, listen to it, chant with it, and be with it. It is called Prem because in the beautiful process of figuring out which mantras to do, creating the tunes, and bringing them to the studio it gave me a deep sense of self love and healing. May it also bring self-love and healing into your life.

Whether you are a healer, a massage therapist, a meditator or __________, you will find this music STAYS in your energy field! You will hum it as you walk...you will hum it as you shower...you will hum it whenever your mind is quiet and allows it to return you to the "Now."

5 out of 5 stars CD to Meditate with.......2006-09-15

This is my favorite music. For meditating with it is perfect: rythmic and evocative, peaceful and fulfilling on a very deep level. I just wish she would put out more albums like this.

3 out of 5 stars Not my first choice.......2006-07-16

I did not like this CD as well as "Shanti" and "Grace." The production was much less rich, more simple. You may like that, but I did not find it as engaging or wide and spacious as the other two CDs I have. I do encourage you to give Kaur a try. Her music is inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Prem by Snatam Kaur Khalsa.......2006-02-10

This is one of my most beloved albums in my music collection. Through Snatam's voice one can feel the Love that hugs the entire universe. Every time I listen to it I am brought into a loving balance of calm and peace. Thank you Snatam for delivering to us such beautiful music. This and her other albums I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Calming and Soothing~ Grace by Snatum Kaur.......2006-01-21

Each track seems mellow and flowing. The instrumentals are just the right touch for Snatum's melodic voice. Her peaceful rhthyms make this CD a hit.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998

Although this collection intends to transport the soul, it has a tremendously potent low-end depth to it that earns high marks indeed in the worlds of vocal and liturgical music. Dmitri Bortniansky's "Hymn of the Cherubim" is performed with a gracefulness that gets a warming fatness from the production, as does Alexander Gretchaninov's "I Have Chosen the Blissful," which travels with a ringing resonance. In a year of fine choral works--check out Sequentia's Hildegard cycle box, 900 Years or Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen for a "something old, something new" mix--this collection is highly valued for its sonic integrity and its excellent anthological mix. --Andrew Bartlett

Amazon.com

Words cannot describe poignantly enough the exquisite, angelic voices that permeate the heart and exalt the soul on Sacred Treasures. The most highly regarded Russian and Bulgarian choirs sing the hymns of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Lvovski, and other composers in the Russian Orthodox Church's tradition of "Divine Worship" (worship through chant). From the first tolling bells that open the CD with a willowy, floating piece from Rachmaninov's Liturgy of St. John, to the final bells closing the door on "Hymn of the Cherubim" (Grigory Lvovski), this CD creates a gentle, distinctly Byzantine glory. The rhythms slowly wisp along while the choirs' baritones, tenors, and sopranos mesh into one expansive blessing. Meant to comprehensively gather not all Russian liturgical pieces but rather hymns that emote an inner tranquility and celestial grace, Sacred Treasures plays like a piece of heaven on Earth. --Karen Karleski

The sense of beauty emerge within us as these chorals fill the space of our head and heart. A music written by real masters and interpreted by voices rarely heard. Beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the soul.......2007-01-10

One of the best renditions of the Orthodox Liturgy most famous hymns.

A terrific production...a wonderful selection; great phrasing. See also "Holy Love" by 'Rossica Choir'

5 out of 5 stars Divine Beauty and Peace! .......2006-12-03

I am the producer of this CD and also of "SACRED TREASURES III: Choral Masterworks From Russia and Beyond" as well as "SACRED TREASURES IV: Quiet Prayers" and "CELTIC TWILIGHT 7: Sacred Spirit". In each case, my intention was to bring together the very best performances of exceptionally beautiful, slow and peaceful sacred music. Most of the pieces on this compilation (as on the other compilations mentioned above) are filled with lush harmonies sung by large mixed choirs. All the selections are deeply nourishing to the soul.

In many cases, I chose to use excerpts from longer pieces, omitting the exultant huge crescendos and very fast sections that are typical of Russian sacred music, presenting only the slow and quiet verses. One reviewer complained about the omission of the final (loud and fast) part of the Cherubic hymns, saying this is the best part, but I completely disagree! I feel that the slow "adagio" sections are by far the most beautiful parts, and that is what you will hear on these CDs.

Different types of music serve different needs, and in today's stressful and fast-paced world, one of the most important and often neglected needs is for time out from that world--to "lay aside all earthly cares" (as the "Cherubic Hymns" on this CD prescribe) and to rest in a magical, quiet space of slow, peaceful, beauty. That peaceful beauty is available to you on all of these albums, including this one, "SACRED TREASURES: Choral Masterworks from Russia"!

3 out of 5 stars A Soviet version of Russian music.......2006-05-29

I admit to some strong bias here, having sung on the recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy available here from the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York. I was in that choir for five years, and our conductor's view of how to properly interpret Russian music became my own.

Because of Stalin's efforts to cleanse the country of the influence of religion, many musicians and composers were sent to Siberia. They were replaced with those from peasant backgrounds. The result was a huge change in how classical Russian music was performed, becoming less subtle, more interested in brute power and flash.

This recording features a massive and powerful choir. But the listener mostly hears a series of vowel sounds, with the consonants lost in the shuffle. Dynamic range is not as large as it could be. Phrasing is largely absent and we hear a steady wall of sound instead. Precision of rhythm is spotty, what consonants we do hear are frequently smeared. Pitch and richness of tone are good, but on high notes, inevitably given the size of the choir, some members strain.

Having performed and recorded Tchaikovsky's Liturgy I am very familiar with the piece. But listening to this recording of excerpts from it I sometimes barely recognized it as the same work. Tchaikovsky gives us great artistry, frequently crecendos and decrecendos on a single phrase. Each choral voice comes and goes like a wave, not all together like a tsunami in all but a few places. The balance of voices is constantly moving.

I encourage you to listen to the samples available here of the Russian Chamber Chorus's recording of Tchaikovsky's Liturgy, compare the same pieces. This recording is more a Vegas neon version of this great artwork than the fine art it deserves to be shown as. James Oestreich, the New York Times critic, put the Russian Chamber Chorus recording at #4 on his top ten list of classical releases for 2001, and said that if you had not heard it "You only think you know Tchaikovsky."

I hope you give the real Russian classical tradition a listen. It deserves your time, and it will pay you back with a huge amount of pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars African Spirit.......2007-05-08

The story goes that Stevie Wonder's Song's in the key of life was being released the same day as EWF's Spirit. Motown knew this & moved Stevie's release date up 2 days. Which goes to show you the respect EWF was getting and still gets today. Of course it was not a rivarly going on, but in the mid-seventies, Stevie & EWF were what one might say, the two leading artists at the time in the black community, only Stevie had made the crossover, on his own terms of course, on a greater level than the blatantly Afrocentric EWF. Maurice & the band never really made too much comment about their heritage, but they celebrated it. Wholeheartedly. Not only within the music, but also in its imagery. We won't go into the well known fact of what Egypt is, that should be known by now.

But with this record, Spirit, EWF does something exquisite in making the music & lyrics appeal directly to the community, but at the same time giving it worldly appeal. There is no way to describe this one track by track, it is a total experience. GETAWAY is a great opener & Burnin Bush is an even greater closer and in between is music that will ultimately stand the test of time. Feel that.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!!!.......2007-01-04

In my opinion, this is the best EWF recording of all time. Buy both this CD and their "Greatest Hits", and you will be in for a true EWF musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST BAND EVER!.......2005-05-11

This is one of my favorite EWF albums! I had the incredible
experience of hearing Philip Bailey, sing Imagination,ACAPPELLA!
That was back in 87. What an amazing voice he has! Maurice
White, you have a fantastic voice too! Nobody can sing lead,
like them. You are, and always will be, my favorite band!!!

5 out of 5 stars EW&F IN THEIR PUREST FORM.......2004-08-26

Only this album and Open Our Eyes is where you find Earth, Wind & Fire 100% doing them. Face it! As great as All 'N All was, it tried to be just that, catering to all conceivable audiences. Spirit is an album that controls its audience, showing you the true depth of this legendary outfit.

Getaway - 10 of 10 - Huge, overpowering, funk-defining jam, Maurice, Phillip, Verdine, the horns, the licks, DAMN!!!!

On Your Face - 9 of 10 - Probably the most overlooked jam in EW&F history. I think I heard it on the radio once in the past eight years. Hot, mid-tempo, party-compatible joint with a message and top-notch vocals.

Imagination - 9 of 10 - Beautifully crafted selection headed by the great Phillip Bailey with soaring choral background vocals.

Spirit - 7 of 10 - Reflective and artistic song that could be considered a dedication to the late Charles Stepney. Slow tempo causes the album to sag a little here.

Saturday Nite - 9 of 10 - Red-carpet jam for the club-hoppers, created in the same vein as "Shining Star". Charges the album back up some. I'm sorry, I love it when Maurice throws that exaggerated twang onto his voice. For more, see "Mighty Mighty" and "Yearnin' Learnin'". Don't get down wit' the roach, though.

Earth, Wind & Fire - 10 of 10 - Hovering introspective cut, which adds meaning to the group's name. Calls for everyone to find a spiritual focus. Excellent vocal work from 'Reece.

Departure (Interlude) - 10 of 10 - Despite Maurice's advanced skills on the kalimba, this is a simplistic interpretation of the group's journey to their own inner spirits. I even taught myself how to play this on the kalimba!

Biyo - 9 of 10 - Another one of EW&F's well-known studio jazz sessions, but with a futuristic edge. Not quite as memorable as "Runnin'" or "Africano", but still raises their instrumental game.

Burnin' Bush - 10 of 10 - EW&F's heavy shout out to gospel music. Crisp and still authentic. You almost wouldn't care if the song never ended.

EXTRA TRACKS - 6 of 10 - I don't drink coffee, but I just wanna get a cup, kick back and listen to "Seraphim", except it's not long enough. An extended version of "Saturday Nite", and short acappella "Imagination", and a might-as-well-be-one-long-song "Departure (The Traveler)" and "African Symphony", which is the extended version of the "Departure" interlude are not enough to make you feel like you are getting much extra.

Anyway, despite proclaimed lack of commerciality at the time, Spirit was and is high-quality music and any recording artist that existed when this classic dropped in '76 would have been ecstatic to have their name associated with this masterpiece in any way. Cop this for true EW&F essence.

5 out of 5 stars See What Imagination Can Do?.......2003-10-15

Earth,Wind & Fire is not only the name of one of this album's best songs but is a statement of intent for a band now
throughlly blending earthy funk, breezy jazz-pop and firey playing
all at once. And here they turn a disadvantage into an advantage
by using the gospel-soul of the tital song as a tribute to the
now deceased arranger Charles Stepney. But that isn't all that's
good here, see!"Getaway" is a classic that DESERVES it's hit
status while "On Your Face" and "Saturday Night" are powerful jams out of the "Shinning Star"-school of all time "united" funk" classics."Imagination" recalls "Devotion" in it's smooth
funk feel and the instrumenatl "Biyo" comes to grips with a
disco-funk vibe.But whatever EWF are doing,especially here,nothing will dissappoint!

Amazon.com essential recording

One of Aretha's most committed-sounding albums--which, of course, is really saying something--the 1970 Spirit in the Dark remains among the high points of her Atlantic work. The breakup of her marriage may be an unspoken theme, but just as striking is her reinvention of well-known songs and motifs, even more dramatic here than usual. Both dovetail in her take on "The Thrill Is Gone," which climaxes on a surprising interpolation of the phrase "free at last." --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic Aretha.......2005-12-12

This is definately an overlooked Aretha Franklin album. While it's not her best of her Atlantic albums, it still holds it's own and is very consistent. Some really inspired cover song choices, the best being her version of "Oh No Not My Baby". This album features the most of her own compositions, 5 in total. She sounds refreshed and overall it's an enjoyable album start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars Soul In the pocket.......2005-12-06

Listen this is a great album. Aretha plays piano on each tune which in itself is a treat. Side One is a jewel...I have 2000 records and I come back to this one alot. I actually have it on vinyl and came here to buy it for a friend.

The band is so in the pocket...if you are a musician trying to feel it...this is a good teacher.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Album.......2005-06-30

This is a nice album from Aretha's early career. It includes two hit singles including the title track and "Don't Play That Song". This album also contains quite a few songs that she wrote herself, 5 in total. Some interesting cover choices from Jimmy Reed to B.B. King, also a great cover of "Oh No Not My Baby". Her voice is in top form. Overall a great R&B soul album from the Queen!

3 out of 5 stars Do Play That Song, Aretha.......2005-06-01

For me the highlight of this album is "Don't Play That Song," which is, for me, one of Aretha's best-ever hits. Even though it's a song about heartache, there's a joyful, celebratory quality that makes one want to dance. Some of the other tracks bordered on the sentimental, such as "OH No Not My Baby, "You and Me", and "That's All I want From You." There are a couple other songs that are enjoyable, but don't have the same intensity of "Don't Play That Song," which is a must-have.

3 out of 5 stars Aretha Franklin Spirit In The Dark.......2004-06-23

Even though this is not among her best Albums, she has proven that she can still work under pressure given the fact what was going on in her life around this time. There are still some Highlights such as Pullin,You And Me,and Spirit In The Dark.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Never has there been a more appropriate Red Hot tribute than this one dedicated to the music of Afrobeat founder Fela Kuti, the Nigerian legend who died from AIDS-related complications in 1997. The artists and groups heard here, nearly 40 all told, cover the musical spectrum: hip-hop (Blackalicious, Roots), jazz (Roy Hargrove, Archie Shepp); soul (Sade, D'Angelo), Afrobeat (Tony Allen, Femi Kuti), world music (Baaba Maal, Jorge Ben), electronic music (Mixmaster Mike, Money Mark) and rock (Nile Rodgers). They have come together to raise money for the 25 million Africans now infected with the AIDS/HIV virus. Red Hot efforts often pair different artists together on the same song, and this album features many once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. Fela's music has been refashioned and mixed together here according to the styles of the artists, rendering several of the 20 songs barely recognizable in comparison with the originals. But such is the strength of Fela's music that even such singular-sounding artists as Macy Gray and Dead Prez get into the Afrobeat spirit of things. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Tribute for a good cause!.......2005-09-06

Fela was the founder and king of Afrbeat, and an inspiration to acts as diverse as fellow Nigerian Lagbaja, and US prog rock duo The Mars Volta (Yes!!). Sadly he succumbed to AIDS related complications in 1997. Fitting then that this tribute CD raises money for AIDS relief in Africa. The CD liner notes talk extensively on this.

Chock full of a diverse array of musical talent; Nile Rogers, Macy Gray, D'Angelo, Sade, The Roots, Les Nubians, Meshell Ndegeocello, Femi Kuti, Baaba Maal and Cheikh Lo to name a few. Most of the songs are reinterpretations of songs by Fela in the artists own unique style, usually arranged differently from the originals. Fela's original vocals are interspersed during interludes. An excellent blend of African meets African American.

`Water no get enemy' featuring Femi, Macy Gray, Nile Rogers, Roy Hargrove and D'Angelo stays faithful to the original; shuffling beats, rich percussion, and lots of blaring horns. It's a real treat hearing Macy and D'Angelo singing in pidgin English.

The vocals of Sade's `By your side' are imposed on a shuffling dubby Afrobeat rhythm. Echo-ey vocals and rich percussion, dreamy sounding. Excellent!

`So be it' featuring Kelis on vocals is the other non Fela composition. It is a calming R&B song with some African sounding backing vocals and great horns played by Ugochi Nwaogwugwu.

`No Agreement' by Res, Tony Allen, Ray Lema, Baaba Maal, Positive Black Soul & Archie Shepp is another outstanding performance. Great jazzy breaks and wonderful horns.

`Zombie (part 1)' is a bouncy hip hop/Afrobeat affair featuring Bugz in the Attic & Wunmi, with lyrics about the robot mentality of soldiers blindly taking orders from above. Written during the days of military rule in Nigeria.

`Zombie (part 2)' with Nile Rogers and Roy Hargrove is an excellent instrumental piece, closer to the original. An energetic horn laden, percussion rich number, with faint electronic tweets.

Another outstanding piece is `Shuffering and shmiling' featuring Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Bilal and Jorge Ben. Transformed with skittery beats and some skat singing and rapping, and horns that stay true to the original. Beautiful!

Each song is musically rich and captivating in it's own way, be it `Gentleman', `Shakara/lady (parts 1 and 2)' with excellent guitar work, talking drums and razor sharp horns, to `Trouble sleep, yanga wake am'. The attention to detail is astounding, everything in its right place.

A beautiful CD showing the wealth and beauty of African music. Not meant to replace the originals at all, and a perfect tribute to the king.

5 out of 5 stars Afrobeat for the masses.......2004-06-29

Shuffering and shmiling alone is enough to make this cd a solid purchase. Underground hip hop luminaries Talib Kweli and Dead Prez combine to remake the song while keeping the same general beat and theme. It's an unbelievably compelling song that does no injustice to the original, rare in a tribute album.

The fun doesnt stop with Shuffering though. Sade's track is a standout and Femi Kuti does his daddy proud. Buy this CD, your ears will thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-05-03

Red Hot and Riot was a HUGE disappointment. With the exception of a very few covers that stay true to the original (the best being "Water no get Enemy" by his son, Femi), the album consists largely of rap songs that have only one thing in common with the original Fela Kuti tunes: the title. Gone are the absolutely exquisite melodies and rhythms that came out of the pure genius of Fela. Some of the rappers doing the covers are so egotistical that not only do they abandon Fela's heavenly musical stylings; they don't even bother to adhere to the original lyrics. Given all this, I just want to issue a warning to those listeners who think that by buying this album, they may be getting a good introduction to Fela's music: save your money and buy one of HIS albums. Even Fela's worst album would be a thousand times more worthwhile to listen to than this eminently forgetable drivel.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2004-02-22

There's not a bad cut on this CD. I never had the pleasure of seeing Fela Kuti, altho I've caught his son in performance a few times. This CD admirably honors Fela's fight, his soul, his fire! My favorite cut is Gentleman with Meshell and Yerba Buena! Baby, it just don't get any better than this...hot, luscious Afro-Soul with a dead-on message. I'm not a Sade fan, but even I have to bask in the black velvet glow of her slide thru this remake of By Your Side. Anyone who digs Macy Gray (count me in) will be all smiles listening to her signature riffs on Water No Get Enemy. I hope the inclusion of Baaba Maal and Cheikh Lo will turn on those listeners who might not otherwise tune in to these killer African artists. This CD is always in my rotation (along with Resident Alien, Seal IV, 6 Degrees' Latin Travels, and Tourist) Slide it in and dance your heart to bursting. It's all for a good cause (AIDS awareness), so double bonus!

5 out of 5 stars Haunting + Pulsating.......2003-08-18

This CD was released in October of last year, but I still can't get it out of my head (not that I want it to be) Great, solid, breathing album. Love Baaba Maal's Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am. The rhythms pulsate and the vocals grab me deep within. Love the guest stars -- Sade, Res, Meshell Ndegeocello, Nile Rodgers, Macy Gray, Kelis, Talib Kweli, Les Nubians, etc. I am in love with the lush compositions and prepossessing rhythms. They all add a certain touch to the vibe of the LP. Plus, all proceeds from the album go towards fighting AIDS in Africa. An even greater reason to love it. I recommend picking up this album if ever you're in the record store. You won't be disappointed.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.
