Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

It sounds as if it were recorded in the back of a barn or on the front porch of a farm in Kentucky with a single microphone to simulate the feel of an old Folkways field recording. The ensemble cast mixes and matches banjos and poorly strummed acoustic guitars with the occasional synthesizer piercing through the mix. The songs have an odd old-world fascination about them ("Riding," "I Had a Good Father and Mother," "I Tried to Stay Healthy For You") and the singer's delivery is untutored by pitch. --Rob O'Connor

My Musical Epiphany...........2006-04-19
Ahem, I have some glorious memories attached to this record. I had just moved to Atlanta, Ga for school when it came out. I went into Wuxtry records(still the best record store ever!!) and was looking for something new, since the small town I had moved from had no indie stores. I was already a fan of Royal Trux, so I spotted the Drag City logo on the back and decided to buy it. I listened to that CD religously every day for about a year. I love everything about it. How the band sounds like they might fall apart at any second, but never really does. I imagined them playing in a barn on a red-dirt floor with only one mic to record into and the guitarist having to step up to the mic for his solo's. Will channels the southern-gothic ambience of Flannery O' Connor and Carson McCullers perfectly. This made me a life-long fan of Mr. Oldham and I have purchased every release of his since. But since this is the one that hooked me, I always find myself going back to it. Besides, in my opinion, he hasn't recorded a finer song than "Merida" since. I remember seeing him on the "I See A Darkness" tour and I asked him to play it, and he said he didn't remember how too, I was so shocked!! Will is still turning out the great tunes, I recomend this one first since it is one of the most primitive, if you enjoy it, then you will love them all!!
A musical god.......2005-01-16
Well, well. One can spend a lifetime searching for music like this. If you're ready, this album (and most of his others) will beckon you into a new state of being. Raw and alive, it simply issues from a depth of subtlety few artists even touch.
Good Job, Bad Plan.......2003-04-08
Pavement may have invented Indie but The Palace Brothers perfected it. The goal of Indie bands, of course, is to sound amateurish, and the Palace Brothers have it down to a science. From the crudely painted cover to the unwieldy album title to the ever changing name of the band, the Palace Brothers ooze that unfinished mastery that all Indie bands strive for. This album really sounds like a live album of a concert in your living room recorded with your old mono cassette deck. Even the vocals are to strained to be real, as if the vocalist blew out his voice singing in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen the night before. It really sounds like a tape you made when you were ten, but you have to ask yourself, do you really want to listen to that? The quandary of Indie is simply this, does amateurish equal good? In the end amateurish is just amateurish, and there is a reason that bands strive for `studio perfection'. If you're into Indie, you'll love it, no doubt, but if your into a more polished sound this album will not convert you. I did like the fiddle. Best tracks are `Idle Hands Are The Devil's Playthings' and (I Was Drunk At The) Pulpit'.
Old time music.......2001-03-27
Oldham tacks a "Brothers" onto the Palace monicker, perhaps intentionally harking back to a time when groups were thus forthrightly named. And indeed, the music this time around is more Bill Monroe than Sonic Youth - there's even a sort of yodel, or a feeble hooting anyway, on "I Had a Good Mother And Father." A more gloomy and daunting track is "Riding," a throwback to the darkest of folk ballads, voices from the grave that tell of incest, abductions and worse. Oldham relies on these old tales and draws deeply from the hillbilly's Pentacostal fear of God. God, sin, prayer, and walking with Jesus are the foundations of the album. "Idle Hands Are the Devil's Playthings" is told as a straightforward morality tale; "(I Was Drunk At the) Pulpit" is a rambling, breathless first-person tale of debauchery though "I knew it was wrong." However, Oldham is not a hick, but has a poet's gift of language. "The sunlight was stronger to my Church-dark
widened eyes," runs an early line in "Pulpit." It aptly encompasses Oldham's struggle with man's baser and nobler urges.
Oh yes,.......2000-12-01
This is good. Simple, honest, and nothing more. Very few people I know truly enjoy this album, most of the time I end up listening to it alone. "I Was Drunk at the Pulpit" proves that one can write a song using only one chord...

Performed in 1930 by the cast and orchestra of the 1928 Berlin premiere (except for Willi Trenk-Trebitsch, the Mackie of the 1929 Prague premiere), this extraordinary recording must be the last word in genuine, unvarnished "authenticity." Even the remastered sound is amazingly good and life-like. The half-spoken, half-sung delivery captures the biting sarcasm of Brecht's text as well as the abrasive bitterness and sinuous lyricism of Weill's melodies, underlined by the punchy, swinging rhythms and indigenously jazzy sound of the orchestra. The result is an uncanny evocation of a historical period and its atmosphere. One can smell the smoky nightclub air, see the garish colors, and feel the unbridled sensuousness. This "abridged" version offers 13 familiar numbers, with most strophic repeats omitted, but includes alternate versions of several songs--four in French, two sung by Brecht himself. There are also two songs from Mahagonny, a long "scene" by Wilhelm Grosz, and two songs each by Rudolf Nelson and Friedrich Hollaender (who wrote the music for the film "The Blue Angel), two of them sung by Marlene Dietrich with her inimitable lascivious sensuality. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful original recording, plenty extras. .......2006-09-11
In quick summary:
- If you're at all familiar with the Dreigroschenoper and all its incarnations, be sure to buy this album. It's the closest you could get to an 'original'.
- If you're completely new to the Threepenny story, I would recommend starting with the 1999 Nina Hagen concert version instead. It's got all the songs left out here, better recording quality, and a more modern approach to the music.
This is not a complete collection of original cast Dreigroschen songs. Rather, it's a selection of the best tracks from the play, often censored and cut short (in all the usual ways), and filled up with seemingly random extras in the genre.
The performers are all quite brilliant, and it's refreshing to hear a 3P without all the screaming and biting from recent versions. Though the songs are by no means slow, they're much more relaxed, more saccharine I would say, than what they've later evolved into. I love both type interpretations, but I often prefer this one.
One very nice bonus is the inclusion of a handful Threepenny songs in French. Otherwise pretty hard to come by. Also, the famous final lines of the movie version (Moritat reprise) are present, which I've only seen in one other recording (the 1981, also led by Miss Lotte Lenya). All in all, an essential CD for Brecht/Weill fans.
This one is really fine. .......2006-03-03
I've been a three-penny freak ever since I was a hanger-on at a Stanford production 40 years ago directed by a Brecht associate from Berlin. It's wonderful to get the authentic original cast records. I really like the added Berlin Chansons, too. "Don't Goggle at that Tango Dancer, Keep Your Eyes on the Guy You Came with!" Or Marlene Dietrich, with "Jonny, When it's Your Birthday, I'll Be Your Guest for a Night."

the most self respecting compilation this year.......2002-05-09
There is new material, or unreleased/live material from every band on this compilation, and seeing as how it has delivered bands like Alkaline Trio Thursday Hot Water Music Boy Sets Fire etc, it deserves some recognition. Simply buy it.
I like it. I like it a lot........2002-03-31
This really is one of my favorite cd's. So much diverstiy and good music on one cd - it's quite novel. There's like 2 songs that I'm not sure how the eff they got on here (like the zero zero song - it's too techno-ish for me) but the rest of the cd makes up for the not as great songs. It's one of those cds you throw in your car when you haveta drive far (man - that rhymed) and don't want to worry about changing the music. Every song is at least listen-to-able if not extremely awesome. The best in my opinion? Boy Sets Fire, At the Drive-in, Thursday, Good Riddance, AFI, Thrice (some of my favorite bands, the songs on here are a good representation of their music). The let downs? OK, actually I'm fully in love with most of the cd. I think they throw in the few not as good songs to keep it from god-level or people like me might start worshipping the cd (well maybe not...). It's a good buy. Really. I wouldn't lie to you. Buy it.
If you like-a-tha sub city..........2001-09-24
I've grown a great respesct for Sub City as of late... they're one of the few record labels out there that aren't about just making muisc. making music is great, but making it with a purpose is even better. If you thought you'd get a better circle of musicians together, you were wrong when you bought this comp. It's not the BEST Sub City take action comp, but it features so many good bands that if you never heard the original Take Action compilation you'd have thought so. This compilation single-handedly turned me back to punk rock, and even though it's a little poppier than my original punk tastes, it gave me a broader view of what good punk can be. And this is good punk rock.
this isnt any punk o roma ..........2001-09-16
this comp is good , diverse , and has alot of new stuff , so its not like when you get a punk o roma and you have half the songs on it on cd already or whatnot. i was kinda disapointed in the swingin utters song, but thats about it , its good but not as good as i would have liked , atom and his package is great as usual . anyway buy this cd , its good stuff , my favorites were Alkaline Trio, Cave In, Thrice , Atom and his package , ATDI , Suicide Machines , The Ataris , Grade , Bratmobile, Selby Tigers , ah well anyway basically all the bands and all are awesome , with the exclusion of boy sets fire and dillinger escape plan , so buy this cd . thats all , its awesome
An Excellent Compilation.......2001-08-12
I haven't actually listened to this specific cd but I don't have to hear it to know that this is one of the best groups of artists ever compiled together on a single cd. A lot of my favorite bands are on here (AFI, At the Drive In, Good Riddance, Dillinger Escape Plan, Thrice, The International Noise Conspiracy, Swingin' Utters, Boy Sets Fire, and Link 80). The Ataris is also very good, even though they are a little too emo/pop for me and the Alkaline Trio used to be among my favorites until they stupidly decided to open for Blink 182, the worst band in the history of music, and I lost all respect for them. This cd mixes a lot of different styles. It has everything from hardcore ska (Link 80) to emo/"lite" punk (The Ataris) to older-school punk (T.S.O.L.) Most of the bands on here are great, although it has a few that I don't particularly like (Atom and His Package, Thursday, and Hot Water Music, to be specific). There are probably only 4 or 5 songs out of the 28 that I would skip over. If your a fan of punk, especially one that likes most types of punk, than this is a good buy.

This is DEFINITELY worth a listen!.......2007-01-16
I am a sax player as well as a music teacher and have found this CD to be well worth the money! Not only do you get a wide variety of styles, but you also get to hear one of the rare saxophone orchestras who use uncommon instruments. You can tell that these players have a lot of fun together, which makes it all the more enjoyable to listen to as well as teach with. There are slight intonation problems on the occasion, but when you think about all of the things they are doing - I think I'll let that one slide! Don't miss out on this unique and enjoyable group! My personal favorite track is Casbah Shuffle. I hope you enjoy!
DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!!.......2005-09-18
What a major disappointment. Has this group ever heard of intonation, vibrato, or articulation? There are several spots on this CD where the "ensemble" is just not even close to being together. I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. Don't buy this CD "just to hear the contrabass sax." I have heard better sounds from my lawn mower running over tree branches. The Nuclear Whales should pull this recording off the market to avoid any more embarrassment. I will not buy any more of their recordings, and urge you to do the same. Save your money for gas.
Totally enthralling!.......2000-09-30
If you only have one saxophone ensemble CD, it should be from the Whales. And if you don't like saxophone, buy this anyways--you will still like it. Good music is music that sounds good, right?
This CD starts, appropriately enough, with a fanfare (Fanfare for the Common Man), which makes great use of the soprano lead. The lower voices are gradually layered in, but they don't bring out all the horns until the second track, which rotates the leads among all the players, including Don Stevens on the Contrabass.
To put it mildly, the Contrabass sax is more than a bit unusual, and there are only a few in existence. Stevens' horn was fortuitously discovered in a New Jersey warehouse just before demolition. The difference between a more standard quartet and this orchestra is the addition of 50% more players and additional voices. The Whales always supplemented the standard 4 saxes (soprano, alto, tenor, and bari) with sopranino and bass. Adding the contrabsss makes this pure magic. Nobody can listen to a contrabass sax without cracking a smile.
I'm a sucker for Ellington, so when it is played by a talented group of musicians like this--especially a sax ensemble--its irresistable to me. The Ellington medley is exquisite, with a tearful interpretation of "Come Sunday" immediately followed by a novel rendition of "Caravan."
The contrabass totally rocks on "Casbah Shuffle". That thing just kind of thwops-it is almost percussive, which makes a great effect in conjunction with the tabla (the Indian drum that goes `dweep, dweep, dweep') and tam tam. With a soprano lead, it has a real Don Ellis "Electric Bath" kind of feel. This is fun stuff-I can't imagine anyone not liking this.
No group located in a tree-hugging locale like Santa Cruz, CA would name themselves Nuclear Whales if they didn't have a sense of humor, but a novelty number like "Shuffle" is immediately followed by a completely serious number, "New York City Ghost," which is so haunting it gives me goose bumps. Interestingly, they don't identify the soloists, and I'm not sure which of the 3 soprano-players does the lead in this one. For the most part, they arrange their own stuff, but this one is arranged by Lennie Niehaus.
Back to another upbeat number; "Sweet Georgia Brown" must have been written with the saxophone in mind. This is the thwoppiest chart for the contrabass. It's followed by an original vocal piece by baritonist Ann Merrell called "Mold, Mold" that would be perfect for some of the Louis Jordan-inspired swing bands that were popular a couple years back.
The rest of the album is more of the same, alternating grit, swing & jazz with Richard Strauss and Louis Gottschalk. This group can play anything, and it sounds great.
Much Larger Than Whales!!.......1999-04-07
Folks, this is simply ensemble sax at it's finest! It don't get much better!
Being a lover of Bass Sax, the Contrabass only added more musical jucies to my ears and pulled untold watts from my system!
UNBELIEVABLE arrangements! GENIUS! More genius are the artists! You have no idea what takes as a musician to get to this plateau, and beyond that, get THIS many together as a group and WHALE away!
The NW are the Canadian Brass, only with reeds! And MORE! A MUST if you are an audiophile! If you are a reed player, you already own it. If not, GET IT!
From Dixieland to Classical and everything inbetween, they have it all. The campiness of various tunes exude artististic virtuosity and push the creative envelope!
You MUST hear this on a high end system as I have. Bozak 310-B Concert Masters do very fine with this range of frequences. (28 cycles required--minimum, to hear it all!).
CRANK IT! You will feel things you never felt before! The arrangements are spectacular!!!
A VERY good HIGH quality recording. No limiters or balonery! Just a PURE sound without distortion.
I can't say enough. Simply the best stuff I have heard in YEARS!
I'm in Milwaukee. If you are near or get by here, look me up and HEAR this correctly!
That's how strongly I feel about the Nuclear Whales! Simply a joy and acts as auricle viagra!

Customer Reviews:
A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26
These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.
I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Hit random and bang your head.......2006-01-18
A sleeper that demonstrates what happens when you take a bunch of indy bands and give them a good cause. In this case the cause is to support the suicide helpline, and the bands provide some of their best. Thrice's "Silhouette" sounds almost as good as Killswitch Engage's "End of Heartache" (although without Howard Jones' vox potenta), Shadows Fall unleashes a live version of its simultaneously psychotic and pensive "Thoughts Without Words." Contributions by Poison the Well, Silverstein, and Further Seems Forever add to the mayhem. Consider it aggressor ownership of the auditory senses.
Is it strange to have an assortment of thrash, speed, and core performing for suicide prevention charity? It should be noted that the Red Cross used "Halleluja" by Rufus Wainright, a song about loving hopelessly, to raise funds for the Nine-Eleven victims. Regardless, it's a good collection.
very good.......2004-07-13
lots of good songs on this cd. Yellowcard stands out among them all. the other volumes are good too. check this cd out!
simply mindblowing.......2004-06-02
When I bought this CD, all I was thinking about was the artists on this CD since I had purchased the previous Plea for Peace Take Action vol. 2 compilation and I knew it would be good. This CD was simply amazing. A good all around effort and the Cd introduced me to bands that I have never heard of before but like them now such as The Beautiful Mistake, Copeland, Fall Out Boy, Brendan Benson and the Wellfed Boys, etc.
third time's a charm.......2004-05-30
My friend just bought this CD (along with volumes 1 and 2) and it rocks SOOOOOO hard!!! With songs from Yellowcard, Rufio, Copeland, and Senses Fail, you can't go wrong!!! Although all the volumes are REALLY awesome, I would definitely say that this one is my favorite of the 3 volumes!!! Be sure to check out Yellowcard's "Life of a Salesman" and Senses Fail's "Free fall without a Parachute"!!!
amazing.......2004-05-12
this album is awesome. plain and simple. the first cd is one of the best ive listened to in a long time, it has great stuff from all kinds of bands (mostly more hardcore stuf), the sinai beach song is awesome, along with shai hulud, poison the well, throwdown, thursday, good riddance, paint it black, and well i guess just all the songs kick major ass. the second cd isnt great, i gave it away, it has poprock bands like yellowcard and stuff, but the first cd is so sick it makes up for that. it is so well worth the 5 bucks, if your not listening to it right now, then why are you still reading this?? buy this cd!!!!!
