Although it squarely falls in the "jukebox musical" category, Jersey Boys doesn¹t try to integrate its songs in an artificial plotline. The show tells the story of the early-1960s group the Four Seasons, and the musical numbers tend to be introduced in context, as when songwriter Bob Gaudio comes up with a tune, or the quartet performs a show. This allows Jersey Boys to flow better than some of ill-fated peers, and the actors can shine without having to bend backward to accommodate an inane book. The show's most (only) daring move is to start with a hip-hop-tinged French-language version of "December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)," an actual hit in France in 2000. After that it's all VH1-biopic territory, but it's done with so much flair, taste and energy that the ride's a fun one. The Four Seasons had enough hits ("Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Rag Doll," etc.) to easily fill an evening at the theater, so it's left to the cast to do right by them. And it does, particularly John Lloyd Young as the band¹s star lead, Frankie Valli. Young hits all the falsetto notes and brings real freshness to the part. His "Can¹t Take My Eyes Off You," a second-act peak, is signed, sealed and delivered with a star's acumen. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
Recounting the rich history and reliving the timeless sounds of the phenomenal Frankie Vallie & The 4 Seasons, the new Broadway musical Jersey Boys answers the musical-and philosophical question, "How did four would-be wise guys from Newark, NJ, become one of the greatest chart-topping successes in pop music history?" Jersey Boys celebrates legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi who, as the 4 seasons, wrote their own songs, invented their own identity, and sold 175 million records worldwide-all before they were 30.

Jersey Boys.......2007-07-08
Purchased CD prior to seeing the show when visiting USA in '06. A fun lively show - the CD now captivates those fond memories of not only the foot tapping music & show but also our special time in New York.
Like being there.......2007-07-05
Have seen the play twice. This album lets me relive the experience anytime anyplace. A great piece of Rock n roll history.
A step back in musical time.......2007-07-05
My wife and daughter didn't know about the Four Seasons but I did. When I told them I wanted to see the musical on stage, there was no interest so I bought this product and they heard it in the car. We went to the stage musical soon after and we have listened to the entire disk so many times I've lost track. I created a Four Seasons monster in my daughter. She's fifteen and has memorized most of the songs and sings along while we are driving somewhere.
Great music, but missing too much.......2007-07-04
I saw this play at age 16 with no idea who the Four Seasons were, but instantly fell in love with it. The problem is, this soudntrack cuts a two hour play into less than an hour on CD. Most of the dialouge is missing, only including enough to let each member of the group at least say something. I know many play soundtracks cut out dialouge, but what confuses me is why this stretches to the music as well. What is there is amazing, but I don't understand why most of the songs are cut to half, and sometimes even a third or fourth of their original lengths. I love this CD, just be aware that you are hardly getting any story, just clips of lots of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons songs. So, great music and dialouge, just not enough for a musical soundtrack.
Jersey boys win my heart.......2007-07-03
what a wonderful album-brings back such wonderful memories
they don't write songs like this enough today

With an "alright, this time it's for real" promise, Toby Mac turns the keys of the ignition and hits the gas on Portable Sounds, his third and most impressive solo effort to date. The musician-producer sounds more confident and comfortable than ever before, deftly mixing elements of rap, rock, pop, R&B, funk, and even a little reggae into a deliciously creative entrée. Some of the "joints on this record" - as Toby Mac's boy TruDog calls them - fall more into one style or another. Yet the world party sound that Toby Mac introduced on his previous Diverse City is built upon here with the opening "One World" as well as "No Ordinary Love." Pop flavors more tracks than before with guitar-driven numbers like "Made to Love," "I'm For You," and the infectious "Suddenly." Fans will also be pleased as TruDog is indeed back on the ridiculously cute "Hype Man." Urgent rockers like "Ignition" and the silky smooth "Lose My Soul" give even more spice and variety to liven up an already electric mix. The latter track is finely tuned with guest vocals from Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac pal Mandisa. Much like Sting, Toby Mac has transcended a former identity (as part of the D.C. Talk super group) and grown into an artist worthy of merit on his own. Portable Sounds stands up to repeated listens with a fresh and energetic sound and a buoyant and unapologetic joy seldom heard. --Michael Lyttle

I love this CD!.......2007-07-16
I bought this because I'm a Tobymac fan and I was not disappointed. My kids and I listen to it all the time and I love that they can fill their minds with Christian Rock instead of all the other stuff that is out there.
Made to love Him!!!.......2007-07-11
TobyMac is one third of Christian Rock group DC Talk, and "Portable sounds" is his third solo CD. It follows up the gold selling "Diverse city", and like its predecessor, features a diversity in sound and strong Christian lyrics. The CD debuted at #10 on Billboard's album charts.
Opening is the soul/funk horn sprinkled "One world", a celebratory song with rapped verses urging all God's children to "Come as you are" and "Come together in love".
The melodic "Made to love" is rockier (with a reggae bridge) and wouldn't sound out of place on a DC Talk album (it reminds me of "What have we become" from "Jesus Freak"), with lyrics about the essence of our creation; "I was made to find you/I was made just for you/Made to adore you/I was made to love". Similar in sound is the funk/rocker "I'm with you".
"Boomin'/Opera trip" is a loud guitar driven funk work out, with an operatic outro. "Face of the Earth/Chuck @ Artist Development" is a midtempo acoustic song with rapped verses and a catchy chorus.
"No ordinary love" is a horn peppered upbeat boy-band sounding song with additional vocals by Nirva Dorsaint-Ready. "Feelin' so fly" is similar.
"Ignition" as its name infers is a blistering rocker, while "Suddenly" is a sunny sounding retro rocker with a catchy guitar riff and refrain.
"All in (letting go)/Mr Talkbox" is a midtempo guitar driven song (the closest thing to a ballad on this CD) with nice harmonies, and closing is the soulful "Lose My Soul/Afterparty" with Kirk Franklin (who also appeared on TobyMac's debut "Momentum") & Mandisa, with lyrics eschewing materialism for spirituality.
I must confess I prefer "Diverse city", but this comes very close to that brilliant album.
Incredible!.......2007-06-29
This man continues to blow me away with his God centered heart felt inspirational music! I have to say I enjoyed this offering more than his others and I thoughts his others were awesome. He kicks it up a notch from Diverse City with Portable Sounds. I know people want to see DC Talk gete back together, but in my oppinion Toby Mac is doing quite well on his own. Seperatelly the 3 DC Talk guys are spreading the Gospel better than as a group. Buy Portable Sounds today!
Great CD.......2007-06-27
When I bought this CD, I wasn't sure it could be as good as Diverse City. I still think Diverse City is his best...but just barely. This CD is excellent with songs like Made to Love, I'm for You, and One World. No Signal is funny, too.

Toby Delivers Again.......2007-06-20
Back with his third solo album, tobyMac doesn't disappoint. He delivers a disc filled with catchy songs, and on this outing he sings more than he rhymes, which is a welcome change of pace because he sings well, and the rap-core style is becoming a bit outdated. The lead-off single, "Made to Love" features an infectious chorus, as well as live strings and horns that add a cool sound to the mix. Other standouts are "I'm For You", and "Face of the Earth." The track "Boomin" is exactly that, and "Ignition" also provides fans with a high octane anthem. Another strong cut is "Lose My Soul", a prayerful duet with Kirk Franklin that emphasizes focusing on God in the face of the cares of the world. If you've liked Toby's solo stuff in the past, or dc Talk for that matter, this is for you.

Relient K's fifth CD is a diverse modern rock album that's so varied at times it sounds like a mix tape. "Take the Fifth" pulses with lush, Beach Boys-y harmonies, "Forgiven" is a piano-driven tune that sounds like early U2, and the dueling guitar feedback that opens "I Need You" displays deeper punk rock heaviosity. "Faking My Own Suicide"--a great tune powered by Death Cabby vocals, ironic yet playful lyrics, and a killer classic rock organ--seems destined for a movie soundtrack. The true standout is of course "Deathbed," an intense eleven minute ode to regret co-starring Jon Foreman of Switchfoot. Relient K have not only weathered lineup changes (the bassist and guitarist are new here) and mainstream success without "selling out" and foregoing their introspective messages of faith and hope. But they've made the best album in their career in the process. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:
Same old Relient K.......2007-07-12
I was excited to finally get this cd after all the buzz about it. However I found myself a little empty after I listened to it. It had good lyrics although not as good as some of their previous albums and it had the good Relient K sound and I enjoyed it. I loved must have something right, the best thing and Give until theres nothing left. My only problem is that all the songs seemed to follow the same format and they didn't place many things to make the chourus or other lines differen then the previous. Other than that the cd's great.
Not the Relient K I know.......2007-07-05
I'm a long-time Relient K fan, but this new album just doesn't do anything for me. I was deeply disappointed in the music and the lyrics.
Some of the songs have that intentional ambiguity that song writers use to try to get secular air time. The most common technique is to write a song that is unclear: is this to God or to a girl? For instance is "I must have done something right" to God or to a girl? I don't think that it makes complete sense either way. Getting a Christian message out to non-Christians is the point, but the problem is that it means that people who are not Christian will never get the message.
A lot of the songs are talking about how messed up he is. Recognizing our brokenness and need for a savior is a necessary step towards salvation, but the songs stop short of pointing to WHO we need. It just comes off being gloomy and hopeless. "Devastation and reform" is an exception. It does mention God as the answer to the devastation he has created.
The last song, called "Deathbed" is a rambling ballad that goes on for 11 minutes. It is about a man dying of lung cancer recounting how he had messed up his life with alcohol, smoking, a bad marriage and divorce. It has some valid points about the destruction caused by dad's abandoning their families, drinking and smoking, premarital sex, etc. But at the end they tag on something about how he accepted Christ so now it's all ok. What I am missing is any indication that Christ transformed his life. When did he make this decision to follow Christ? How did his life change? It seems like he just wasted his life on bad choices and just used Jesus as his ticket to heaven at the end. Maybe the song is a warning to not be like that, but the point is dulled by the happy ending.
But it gets worse. The song "Faking my own suicide" is just disturbed. Maybe I just don't get it, but I can't find anything redeeming about that song. Is it supposed to be funny? Making light of suicide is not something I can appreciate.
Great new CD from Relient K!.......2007-07-05
This is a really good CD for anyone who likes Relient K's style that varies from punk to acapella... It follows the styles of many of their past CDS but also brings in some totally new styles... awesome album!
Another masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Relient K has been very consistent over the years, and remarkably, they have again raised the bar. This collection of songs rocks, in its entirety. Except for one 15-second interlude, every song is iPod-worthy. The album's opening track "Plead the Fifth" finds the guys skillfully harmonizing a cappella, Beach Boys style. Too bad it's only a minute and thirteen seconds long as it leaves the listener wanting more. The lead single, "Must Have Done Something Right" features a killer hook. Other strong tracks are "Forgiven" and "The Best Thing." The band finishes the album with a dramatic, eleven-minute song called "Deathbed", which tells the story of a man dying of lung cancer who reflects on his life and poor decisions, but recounts the night when he put his faith in Christ. And to top it off, Switchfoot's Jon Foreman sings the final verse. Enough said.
Some Good, Some Very Good, One Bad.......2007-06-15
Relient K is a group that has a sound that is very appealing to teenagers. My daughter really loves this CD.
I am more mixed on it. Most of the songs are good. A few are very good. A couple are silly or worse.
On the plus side, 'Forgiven' is really a terrific song. Another one that is very impressive is 'Deathbed' which is about a dying cancer patient reflecting back on life and considering Jesus. It is very long and quite a story. I had to listen to it a few times before it really caught on with me, but it is actually very good.
Lyrically, most of the songs are either quite positive or even expressly Christian.
One song that is quite silly is 'Crayons Can Melt On Us For All I Care'. It is meaningless. One song that I don't like at all is, 'Faking My Own Suicide.' It seems very out of place lyrically and style wise both. It is about a teenage breakup followed by the boy faking his own suicide to get the girl's attention and make her think that she loved him. This really should have been left off of this project.
With the exception of that song, the rest of this is a good album. In spite of that, I hesitate to recommend it because that one song is so inappropriate.

Rock For Christ!! .......2007-07-04
Let me start off by saying this album is absolutley amazing!!!! There are no fillers here. Every single song could be released as a single! I highly recommend this album to all lovers of Christian rock. This album defintley ties with there 2004 album "Collide" for there best album yet. Skillet is really the best christian rock band out there hands down! From the very moment you hear the first track and single "Rebirthing," you'll be left absolutley speechless and amazed at how wonderful and breathtaking it is. It will suddenly make a christian remember the first time they accepted Jesus Christ into there life as Lord and Savior, and became a new creation and are now living for love just as he did.
So please do yourself a favor and buy this now! You won't be disappointed by any means!! Skillet continues to deliver great awesome Christian rock tunes with each album and this album continues that. BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Can I get a head bang?.......2007-06-26
This album has a HUGE arena rock sound. It is mostly hard music, but without the screaming. Instead, lead singer John Cooper brings great melodies and powerful choruses. Keyboardist Korey Cooper provides great backup vocals. The lyrical themes are not new or unique, ranging from love, relationships, truth, life's difficulties, etc, but the sound is gigantic and will rock you from here to kingdom come.
Sadly, not exactly Skillet's best outing..........2007-05-21
After the monotonous "Collide," I had high hopes for Skillet's newest album. I used to be a big fan back in the "Hey You, I Love Your Soul" days, and from the previews it sounded like Skillet was once again returning to their synth-laden rock sound. They weren't.
This album suffers from serious "God or my girlfriend?" syndrome, in which the lyrics are ambigous enough that christians can pick out the meaning, but to any non-informed secular listener it just sounds like he's singing about his girlfriend. On some tracks, the lyrics are just plain awful (see: Better Than Drugs). But enough with the lyrics.
Unfortunetly, Skillet doesn't deliver with the musical side of things either. Unlike the catchy melodies and nice riffs of previous albums, this CD is filled with boring verses and repetetive choruses. To be honest, it sounds a bit like a computer wrote it. It lacks personality or life. It's just notes. All of which is quite a shame, as I know that Skillet themselves are perfectly fine song-writers.
The album isn't entirely awful, but you can tell they were trying to reach a more mainstream audience, and in the process, cheapened the experience. If you plan on picking up a Skillet CD, I'd go with "Hey You, I Love Your Soul" or "Invincible" for some nice easy synth-rock, or "Alien Youth" if harder rock floats your boat. Either way, I'd stay away from this album.

AWESOME!.......2007-07-10
If you enjoy gospel music -- YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET! Elvis' incredible voice is perfect for the soulful lyrics. Plus he picks up the tempo on many of them making them sound more like rock. All of my favorites are on this 3CD set - so I'm very very happy that I bought it. I highly recommend it!
This CD is great!.......2007-07-07
Elvis sings gospel songs like no other! Some of the songs are a litte rough but you have to realize some songs were recorded in his home or at the studio while he is just playing around. The first disc is more of the released songs while some of the songs on the other CD's are live versions or unreleased versions with him laughing and talking. I thoroughly love this set!
Great gospel album!.......2007-07-05
I have always thought that Elvis' voice was never better than when he was singing gospel and this album proves it! Well done remastering, clear, very good sound. Absolutely a must for people who love gospel and Elvis!!

Three good songs.......2007-05-17
My wife wanted this collection after seeing it on a TV commercial. There are only about three good songs on this entire collection. Amazing Love is the best followed by open the eyes of my heart and the third I cannot think of right now. I would just buy the good ones from itunes.

After a hugely successful foray into the genre of worship music, newsboys return to their rock roots with "GO," their first rock album since "Thrive" in 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Family loves it!.......2007-07-10
We bought tickets to the 'Go' concert so we bought the CD so we would know the new Newsboys songs. It has turned into our favorite CD.
Great CD.......2007-07-05
I'm an old-school Newsboys fan who was a bit disappointed that they spent so much time making retreds of other people's music on "Adoration" and "Devotion". One reason that I love the Newsboys older music like "Breakfast" and "Take me to your leader" is for the brilliantly witty lyrics by Steve Taylor. I'm dating myself, but I was a fan of his solo career, and I've never heard lyrics to top those on "I want to be a clone". Teaming up with the musical powerhouse of the Newsboys was a superb combination. So I am glad to hear them recording their own music again, and these songs have blessed me a lot. "In Wonder" is a better worship song than any from their last two albums. "Go" is the great commission put to modern rock. And "Your love is better than life" is classic Newsboys fun with a solid message.
Something beautiful~yeah, yeah!:).......2007-06-17
"Here's..to....the Lover of my soul!!" Amen.
Newsboys have done it again!.......2007-06-07
Newsboys have always been known for their great hooks, quirky lyrics, and their ability to make one heck of an album, Go is no exception, combine the musical talents from thrive, the dance beat from Not Ashamed, and the great lyrics from take me to your leader and you get GO! GO could be their best album to date!
Brilliant.......2007-06-01
I did not discover the Newsboys until Thrive came out, and even then I was not fully impressed. This is not to say I didn't like Thrive, in fact it is now one of my overall favorites, but at the time I had other musical priorities.
Go changed it for me. I listen to a Newsboys CD almost every day now, and 90% of that time it is Go. This album is wonderful...every song is good in its own way, and they are all rather unique. The lyrics are great (come on..."where we're led all the living dead wanna leave their zombie mob"...How do they think that stuff up?). Most of the songs keep you singing along and bobbing your head, all of them have a good message, and the slower songs (such as "In Wonder") make you want to praise this glorious God they are singing about.
I've heard they have returned to their roots musically. I cannot confirm or deny it.
As a side note, the concert promoting this CD was stellar. If you have a chance, see it!

With Oh! Gravity, the San Diego-based modern rock act delivers their best album in years, one that fully reconciles their (Christian) faith with their (considerable) talent. It's diverse but not overly so, and while the production work of veteran Tim Palmer (U2, Tears for Fears) helps provide a radio-friendly sheen atop everything, it's actually their least compromised/mainstream sounding record since the group left the indie scene. From the chiming, revved-up, anthemic title song, which pairs compressed vocals with distorted guitars, to the moody and mildly schizophrenic single "Dirty Second Hands," this album is loud and dirty, the lyrics are thoughtful and plaintive. Lead singer/songwriter Jon Foreman clearly questions the meaning of the band's success, and the role they play in the scheme of things: "Like a puppet on a monetary string/Maybe we've been caught singing/Red, white, blue, and green/But that ain't my American dream." If only Switchfoot's conscience could be implanted in the bodies of other modern rock acts! The world might not necessarily be a better place, but the radio certainly would be. --Mike McGonigal

Switchfoot--Live in San Diego (DVD) |
Description
Oh! Gravity, the highly anticipated sixth album from the San Diego rock band Switchfoot, contains 12 new tracks written by the band and produced by Tim Palmer (Tin Machine, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Mother Love Bone, U2) and Switchfoot with Grammy-winning executive producer Steve Lillywhite. The new album expands Switchfoot's sonic palette while at the same time dealing with certain social issues. On songs like "Dirty Second Hands," Jon Foreman sings of the dehumanization that comes with technology. Other politically motivated tracks include "Oh! Gravity." the title track's generational appeal for love, peace and understanding, "American Dream," with its biting truth, "Awakening," about trying to recover the innocence of a child in the midst of an ever-harsher reality, the sawing alt-country of "Head Over Heels," the exotic instrumentation and Middle Easternflavor of "Circles," the REM-esque pulse of "4:12," the lush Brit-pop melodies of "Yesterdays," the Echo and the Bunnymen/Smiths influenced "Burn Out Bright" and Motown sound of "Amateur Lovers."

Praise be to God.......2007-07-05
This cd is one a chritian can listen to i believe.
There are a few connotations to Christianity but not cleary stated in every song.
He sings about the largest current issue in the US, the war.
Also there is a song about a dream he has and turns gold. It was a story that I really enjoyed.
I wish i could see them perform.
It has a fun lyrical tone. And serious.
This was not a waste of money now.
grew into one of the best.......2007-06-15
I was introduced to Switchfoot with their excellent album 'The Beautiful Letdown'. Like a lot of people I have rated their subsequent albums on how well they mimic TBL.
And so I initially was quite disappointed with this album. But after some months I think it is one of their best. It is harder music, but still very tight and thoughtful. I encourage people to listen to it not as a 'Switchfoot' album, but as an album. In that light, it is excellent and speaks very well of Switchfoot's ability to write excellent music that is not easy to pidgeonhole.
Switchfoot's best CD yet!.......2007-06-15
I've always enjoyed Switchfoot as a band, yet in the past, every CD of theirs had at least one or two songs that I really loved, some that I was okay with, and a few that I tended to skip over. This has to be the first CD by Switchfoot that is great from start to finish! They were close to hitting a home run with "Nothing is Sound," but they weren't quite there yet. "Oh! Gravity" is right on the money. Switchfoot adds to their edgier material from their previous release, giving their songs even more depth and maturity. At the same time, some songs, such as 4:12 and Secondhand Lovers, bring back fond memories of their first release, "Legend of Chin." "Singability" is at an all-time high--songs like the title track, American Dream, and Head Over Heals have great choruses that you can't help but sing along with. As owner of all their previous work, I can honestly say that this is the best investment in Switchfoot material that I've made in years.
Great CD and..........2007-06-05
...through June 26, 2007 there's a FREE bonus track to download, "Revenge"! (There's an insert with the CD that has instructions on how to download it).
Anyway, the music on the CD is great. Switchfoot is always a great band to listen to. My favorite songs are the title track and "Awakening".
Oh! Another Great One.......2007-05-19
Switchfoot's music has shaken the secular scene for a long time. Their music is always a good listen, and despite how much you might deny that, it always is catchy.
I am absolutely in love with this CD. I would have to say "Faust" is one of the greater tracks on the CD (along with "Dirty Second Hands", "Oh! Gravity", and "Awakening"), but every track is an amazing listen.
And they were hoping that the larger public would take this CD in good hearts. They need not worry about the public. We love them. Oh! Gravity is a great mix of melodies, harmonies, and banging of cymbals (haha, joke about live concerts =P).
Jon provides a good look on material things and our lives as is. He always has something good to tell the world, and the world is out there just waiting for something to be said. I love his lyrics.
I am glad I purchased this one the day it came out. And I'm glad Switchfoot keeps rocking on...

Album Description
Deriving from a variety of influences such as Muse, Chevelle, Blindside and Linkin Park, Red brings a unique blend of heavy guitars, intense string arrangements and dynamic vocals. They are quickly gaining fans with an exceedingly intense live show every bit as compelling as their debut cd. Already touring heavily in the mid-west and west coast, Red has quickly made many fans along the way. With over 20,000 friends on myspace, the band makes it a priority to write each and every fan back personally. Randy Armstrong says, "It is important that our fans see us as genuine guys who care." The songs on their debut release deal with the struggles that all humans face, while leading listeners to a place of redemption in the midst of the brokenness. Red hopes their music impacts people in a way that causes them to not feel alone in their struggles. Randy explains, "I hope that our music has a profound impact on people. You never know what people are dealing with in their every day lives, but I am willing to bet that at some point, we all have experienced the same feelings of anger, sadness, confusion, etc. Our music talks about a lot of those times that we have struggled dealing with those feelings and the situations that caused them. I hope our music makes them feel like they are not struggling alone." Produced by Dove nominated producer Rob Graves and mixed by Ben Grosse, End of Silence releases June 13th. The band will be touring with Day of Fire this spring then playing at many major festivals this summer and will continue to hit the road throughout the fall.
Customer Reviews:
Awsome CD.......2007-07-16
Where did they come from? I was looking to get the new Linkin Park but after I read mixed reviews people were actually recommending RED so I gave it a shot. RED gets more play than the new Linkin Park now. Great CD, no need to fast forward, just put it in and let it play.
Christian Rock SUCKS.......2007-06-21
I really like the song Breathe. I thought about buying the album until I discovered I was tricked into liking a song by a Christian "rock" group, lol!!! So much for Red...
Surprise, Surprise!.......2007-06-08
This is the second time this year that I went out on a limb and just bought some music that someone had recommended in their review of some other album (both of which were garbage albums from previously great bands).
This is the second time this year that I've been surprised at how good my "limb" decision music is (the other was Stage, which I've since decided is one of the greatest rock albums I've ever heard).
Although End of Silence is relatively short, it fills that time frame with great songs. The Already Over tracks are probably my favorite; they contrast each other perfectly with a mix of heavy riffs, piano, violin, and screaming/crooning lyrics that really set the tone for the whole CD.
The only negative that I found with the work, as a whole, was that RED seems a little short on variety, which could make the album a slightly predictable. It's certainly not redundant, though, and as they mature I'm sure they'll experiment with new sounds.
The Bottom Line: At 4.2 stars, it's a definite buy.
I love RED!.......2007-06-06
What all can I say? I love the band RED, I first heard of them through their song "Already over" on my Christian rock HITS CD, and I became a fan, and I became more of a fan when I bought this CD Of theirs, all of the songs are 100% awesome! I wasn't a huge fan of much hard rock until I started listening to more Christian rock groups, such as Seventh Day Slumber, Disciple, Pillar, P.O.D. etc... and now I love Christian rock music, and this album is really awesome, I think you all should buy it, if you like hard rock or Christian rock, you'll love this CD!
Surprise!!.......2007-05-28
Why must people continually make comparisons to other works? These guys sound nothing like Linkin Park, they sound like RED. Ever think that they have their own style, no matter what your twisted little brains tell you, They have very much a different style than LP. Don't get me wrong, I love LP, but these guys are great in their own way.
Anyway, I bought this cd for the song Breathe Into Me (who didn't?), and I am very impressed with the rest of the cd. I was a little surprised for the "Christioan Rock" categorization, but there have been others that surprised me in this way as well. This bands vocals, guitars, percussions, pianos and strings are all VERY well done, and make every second of this production worth the listen. A bold piece, all the tracks here are the best one.

The churchy organ that opens and closes Jonny Lang's fifth album reveals its direction. After 2003's Long Time Coming plunged the once-up-and-coming blues guitarist into more soulful and commercial waters, Turn Around completes the transition. Lang is lyrically direct in his spiritual awakening, and the uplifting if sometimes pedantic lyrics make it clear that any vestiges of the teenaged guitar slinger that knocked out an impressive version of the lascivious "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" on his debut are far in the past. A few short leads aside, Lang shifts into full Stevie Wonder/Prince mode, but unfortunately without the quality material that made those artists' work transcend genre. With vocals that shift from guttural howls to sweet and screaming falsetto on tunes like "Don't Stop (For Anything)" and a penchant for oversinging, he's not aiming for subtlety. But there are some winning melodies here: songs such as "Anything's Possible" and "One Person at a Time" boast catchy choruses in a funkified, gospel-tinged, adult-alternative vein bound to appeal to audiences that lean towards obvious religious references in their music. This is a well crafted, undeniably heartfelt set from Lang, who makes it abundantly clear he feels his destiny is to make the world a better place through Jesus. It's a valid enough objective that doesn't quite connect with Lang's rather heavy-handed lyrics, affected singing, and derivative tunes. --Hal Horowitz
Album Description
The Grammy-nominated, former prodigy instrumentalist, who topped the Billboard New Artist chart with his first album at age 15, stands now as a mature creative force, made more sensitive yet also toughened by life's adventures. He's learned what it means to rise above hard times and to find meaning where chaos seemed to rule.
These insights, and the emotions they unleash, makes Turn Around the pivotal album of Jonny Lang's career to date - a passage that links the triumphs of his past to the promise of his future.
A soul-stirring organ, played by Grammy-winning producer Shannon Sanders, forecasts the surge of music that follows on Turn Around: the stomping funk of "Bump in the Road," the startling climax that closes "The Other Side of the Fence," the electrifying vocal exchanges with Michael McDonald on "Thankful," and on the opposite extreme, the work-gang chant that drives "Turn Around" and the profound intimacy of "Only a Man" ...
Turn Around is all of this and more, a tumble of musical colors that dazzle and soothe. And in the end, they achieve coherence through the meaning that Lang conveys so urgently.
"With this album I want to focus, more than ever before, on my purpose in life," he explains. "I've been so incredibly blessed. My wife and I just had our fifth anniversary. I get to do what I love for a living. But it wasn't so long ago that I was spiraling downward in a lot of ways, until God touched my life and set me on the right track. I feel a huge debt to give glory back to Him for everything He has done for me. It's the least he can do."
That said, Turn Around is not slotted only to listeners who have - or have not - undergone this kind of transformation. It inspires, excites, and gets people on their feet - but it doesn't preach. "I understand that not everybody believes as I do," Lang says, "which is fine. I just want to sing about what's going on in my life and let people make up their own minds about that."
For all the conviction that Lang brings to Turn Around, the album began almost as an afterthought. Lang was in the studio one day with his producer, Ron Fair, who is also president of A&M/Interscope Records. There wasn't anything pressing on the agenda; they were doing routine work on the final stages of Lang's previous record, Long Time Coming. Then, out of the blue, Fair said something completely unexpected.
"He looks at me and goes, `Dude, you need to make a gospel record,'" Lang says, laughing at the recollection. "Now, I hadn't really mentioned much to Ron about that side of my life, but for some reason he knew where I was at. So I thought about it for just a second and said, `Yes, I do.'"
There is plenty of gospel in Turn Around, especially in the choir that riffs through "Thankful" and "It's Not Over." But rustic country ("On That Great Day," with guests Buddy Miller and Sam Bush), Motown funk ("One Person at a Time"), jazzy folk ("My Love Remains"), and other influences flavor this music too. In this varied setting, "gospel" has more to do with the spirit that animates these tracks than any category it might inhabit.
Customer Reviews:
THE ATTACK IS GONE.......2007-07-01
This work lacks that extra "something" that made Jonny's earlier work really jump. His voice is right up front, the singing is great. The songs are good, very good. But the attack is gone. Jonny needs to get that producer back he used to have, David Z. Chances are David is either (a) in rehab; (b) passed on; or (c) parted ways with Jonny for other reasons. Well, Jonny, either get him back or get someone else who can push your work that extra step further. Otherwise I will only be hearing you on the radio.
All grown up.......2007-06-27
I remember seeing Jonny Lang as a skinny kid in the blues brothers movie and thinking well he has some talent and some potential. I hadn't heard anything about him on the wire for a few years and thought he had disappeared. I actually found the cd by accident. It's refreshing, classic blues sung without pandering or compromising. Kudos. He sings from his soul and connects with the audience, the skinny little kid is all grown up and getting better with age.
Disappointment.......2007-06-25
Apparently, Jonny's religious/spiritual pusuits are in conflict with The Blues, and what is left of a stellar and influential young blues talent, is merely another couple non-descript albums in a morass of pop/schlock works by faceless artists. Obviously he wants to carry a different message at this point in his life. I miss Jonny, but I've moved on to other blues artists. I'll never forget his live peformance at Sturgis Bikeweek in 2002. It was smokin'!
Stretching out.......2007-06-17
Jonny has matured, his voice is an instrument along with his guitar work. I saw Jonny do this CD live, and ones who say he isnt the guitar kid anymore is right, he is a matured guitar man, who has more matured chops on guitar that builds the song to a screaming peak, then hits you with a voice that is truly blessed by God. I have seen many artists live including Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimi Hendrix and not only does Jonny do good in the studio, he can move you live, he is one amazing artist who can deliver the goods live as well as the studio. If you ever get a chance to see a live show by Jonny and his great band, do so, you then can see, that Jonny Lang is not a one shot wonderkid, he is one of the most amazing artist around today. When an artist is better live than on CD, then you know Jonny Lang will only get better, cause he is just starting. Way to go Jonny, keep moving on and growing.
CHANGE MY WHOLE PERSPECTIVE ON BLUES AND ROCK.......2007-06-17
Wow what can I say, i'm not used 2 listening to Rock, or blues, but this is def different. I usually listen to gospel and r&b and jazz. This s a album that is really good, I mean i can actually listen to this album I just dont' know about "Only A Man" but other than that all the tracks, and I love "Thankful" and "Anythngs Possible"
people need to understand that people change, which mean, Johnny has found his spirtual side, and found Jesus, and yes this album is not all the way christian just only 2 tracks
So I say people get used to fact people are going to change and GET OVA IT, IT IS A NICE ALBUM,
