The Isleys Coasting.......2007-07-02
INSIDE YOU (1981) and THE REAL DEAL (1982) are the featured albums on this third two-on-one Isley release from BGO Records. Both of these albums broke the group's nine gold and/or platinum album streak.
The previous album GRAND SLAM (also 1981) took longer than the previous eight albums to reach "gold" status. So on INSIDE YOU, the Isleys tried to reinvent themselves by incorporating lush string arrangements into their clavinet/guitar solo funk formula. For the most part, it works, especially on the title tune, the Doobie-ish "Baby Hold On", the lush Stylistics-like ballad "Don't Hold Back Your Love", and "Love Zone" in which Ernie's guitar soars above a comfy bed of strings. However, the pop leanings fall flat on "First Love", the soggy "Welcome To My Heart", and "Love Merry Go Round", a good idea that somehow fails to catch fire. INSIDE YOU stalled at #45 on the Billboard pop album chart, the Isleys first non-top 40 album since 1971's GIVIN' IT BACK.
After that pop/funk experiment failed, the Isleys brought the funk back to the forefront in 1982's THE REAL DEAL. The title track and "Are You With Me?" incorporate some Gap Band influences in the mix, while those darn strings rear their ugly head in the poppy "It's Alright With Me". "All In My Lover's Eyes" is well-sung but features lazy lyrics, while Ernie's guitar saves the funky "Stone Cold Lover" and the bluesy closer "Under The Influence". This album crawled to #87 on the Billboard Pop Charts.
After the failure of these albums, the Isleys came back with 1983's platinum BETWEEN THE SHEETS. These albums aren't the best representation of the Isley catalog, but they have their moments.
First Love!.......2007-06-29
I can't believe this! Wow! I have been waiting on both of these albums to be released since 1993! I own both albums on vinyl and they're my 2 favorite Isley albums. Now these two albums never have been on cd domestically! So this is a first time. I've seen a copy of the Real Deal on eBay which looked like an import. But don't no if it was legit. Now I have been jamming these two albums since 1993. 1 song from each album has been released on cd. So this is going to be good. I can't wait because I already pre-ordered it. I own imported cd of Grand Slam, Go all the Way, Masterpiece, Showdown, Harvest for the World and Live it Up! A couple is now sold domestically but I am one of their biggest fans. Now these albums are two of their lowest selling albums but I think it was just the advertisement and the time it was released that didn't allow these albums to soar. But these are two underrated albums. I know all kinds of history on these guys. So place your order and get ready to jam! This is the Real Deal!

Ben Harper makes elegant leaps from reggae to rock to folk to funk and back in his fifth studio album. The rootsy singer-songwriter with the silken tenor isn't merely genuflecting at the altar of his musical heroes, as here he shows more quirky imagination and inventive musicianship than on any of his earlier efforts. That said, "Diamonds on the Inside" is painted with the same brush that Bob Dylan used on "I Shall Be Released," but Harper adds his own Biblical aphorisms to make the song his own. Most of the songs display Harper's growth as a poet, as he ponders the dualities of life and love in tunes like the disturbing "Touch from Your Lust" and the disquietingly lyrical "Amen Omen." Harper is compelled to sing what is in his heart and to do what he can to make the world a better place. Witness the Marley-like "With My Own Two Hands." The only misstep on the whole disc is the overly humid orchestration of "When She Believes." --Jaan Uhelszki

Legend Incarnate?.......2006-11-10
Ben Harper was only a name to me as he is to most people until faily recently. I saw him live and on the Henry Rollins show both this year and and picked-up his new double album and am now scampering to get ALL his material and soak it up. Bottom Line: Ben is out of era...in the Motown years he would have had a home but today no one (including his label) really knows how to market him. He is far too mature musically for the modern day R&B radio and out of the mold for alternative music so he fits into that void that many have had GREAT success in such as Jack Johnson, Tracy Chapman and others but he is his own (as are the aforementioned). He is old school R&B and his openess to experiementation and variation not too mention his talent and sound sometimes make me think he is the incarnate of the late, great Marvin Gaye, funny since I do not believe in reincarnation.
I can ealisy reccommend ANYTHING by Ben if you love Marvin and Motown. He also has hints of Marleyesque struggle in his musical lyrics as well as a heavy gospel influence at times. What an amazing talent! This album is one of his best overall and a good showcase of his music. A good place to start but you can't go wrong with anything he has done.
All good.......2006-04-24
This is great album, I like how pretty much every song is different, and not just songwise, but it spans many different genres. Ben Harper is always good. There's a lot of good reviews for this album, so I won't go much further than that.
Two quick points:
1) I had no trouble playing the music on my computer and converting it into MP3 form. Don't know if it's just some CDs that have the protection or what.
2) Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been around forever and have sounded the same before and after Paul Simon's Graceland album. I don't think it's fair to say that Ben Harper copied anything. They're a beautiful sounding group and they always have that sound. I'm sure everyone remembers the Lifesavers commercials...
Blah!.......2006-04-05
Tried listening to this album, failed. Ben Harper apparently has an awful voice, and the song writing is difficult to listen to. The lyrics are so lame. So so lame.
One star.
"When it's good, it's so, soooo good, but...".......2006-04-02
I really enjoyed Ben Harper's last solo studio release before "Both Sides of the Gun"; but it has a couple of flops that merited the 4-star rather than 5-star rating.
For one thing, I'm Ben Harper's age, and thus old enough to remember Paul Simon's "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes." This is the song that Ben Harper used to rip off, errmm, bring Simon's influence into "Picture of Jesus," which is a dreadful tribute to Simon's "Diamonds"; yet nowhere in the CD liner notes does Harper credit or even thank Simon for this influence--which, as a musician, I thought was kind of classless.
The other "misstep," as the original Amazon.com reviewer succinctly called it, was "When She Believes." I'm not sure if Ben Harper wants us to envision that we're on a gondola in Venice while this song is playing, but the corny "That's Amore"-esque violins playing in the background sure made it feel that way.
Now for the good stuff--standouts on this CD include the opening track, "With My Own Two Hands," which is akin to a beautiful prayer-cum-traditional reggae celebration of a song. "When It's Good" is sultry, sexy, bluesy, and minimalist all at the same time; and the title track, "Diamonds on the Inside," is soulful and loving in its tone while being masterful in its guitar sounds. "Brown Eyed Blues" and "Bring the Funk" are danceable and, well, wonderfully funky; and the eloquent "Blessed to Be a Witness" is a fitting almost-bookend for the opening number. Perhaps the most introspective, yearning song with a masterful blend of both piano and acoustic guitar is "Amen Omen," a passionate ballad. The two rock numbers, "Temporary Remedy" and "So High So Low", also don't disappoint.
So if you don't let the two sloppy tracks I ranted about, as well as the mediocre "Everything" and "She's Only Happy in the Sun", bother you, this is well worth the investment.
diamonds .......2006-03-23
I thought that this cd was great. I really wish he would put Diamonds On The Inside on one of his greatest cd's.

You've never looked at music, this way........2007-07-02
Listining to this alum is to the ears what eating sour nails is to the mouth, and it feels so good. The music is fantastic and the lyrics are brilliant. Courtney Love is one of the most under rated lyracists of our time.
Spectacular........2007-05-31
Out of all the albums, this is clearly the most raw, Live Through This should be about a balance between this and Celebrity Skin. Courtney has a great voice, a truly unique voice that not many can copy. This cd is full of rage, really it's a good cd to listen to if you've had not so good of a day. It's also an extremely addictive cd...I don't know how I lived without it. It's too bad Hole usually doesn't get the credit they deserve.
slut me open.......2006-07-15
Heavy, raw and open; this CD really blows away any of the so called "Riot Grrls." A lot of kids want "Punk Rock" but they want it as a suburban commodity, nice and pretty and clean. These songs are angry, pissed off, dirty and ooze with female bombast. This is a classic CD and when the smoke clears, you will see that this is grungier and nastier than Nirvana or other so called grunge bands.
Falling Down, and what an entertaining ride it is!.......2006-06-04
Pretty on The Inside is out there and raw, its a very different album from Live Through This and Celebrity Skin (but all three are very different from each other), its good but it you can't listen to it all at once and expect to like it, it takes multiple listens.
time flys when your fallin down........2006-04-08
Holes debut album 'Pretty on the inside ' is by far [in my opinion] the best album they put out , its a hurricane of rage , pushing every button until theres nothing left to push. As soon as the album starts it immediatly pulls you in , and takes you for a violent ride in which theres no slowing down , no time to catch your breath . Your shot through Courtneys world of sex , rage , desperation , denial ,pain and turmoil all through a haze of smoke . This is definitly the most raw of all their albums and it shows that they were better off [musically] pre-Kurt Cobain. There is no soft [poppy] spot on this album , which is what makes it truly extraordinairy , i agree with the reviewer who says theres no other band like HOLE in the 00's and this was an amazing start, as much as i love the other albums i wish they would have stayed on the in-your-face path that they started out on in Pretty on the inside.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).
"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Bea Arthur on Broadway is definitely more Bea than Broadway, but it's a career well worth remembering. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
And Then There's BEA!.......2007-01-20
Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!
Golden Girl Shines Brightly.......2005-10-21
For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.
Alive and Unforgettable.......2004-11-21
Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.
The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.
What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.
I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...
Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.
You really can't be disappointed. I promise.
If only we could have a visual as well!
A trip down memory lane..........2003-10-19
Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.
A Truly Remarkable Accomplishment.......2003-06-16
As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

Customer Reviews:
"Outside Inside" might be the title for a reason.......2007-02-23
When the predecessor of this album, "The Completion Backwards Principle" was released, I heard two reactions from my friends. From those who had never heard the Tubes before, their comments were along these lines: "Hey - there's a new band called the Tubes and they're great!" From those who had been long time fans of the group, their reactions were negative and they expressed disappointment that the Tubes had "sold out." I was alone in my reaction, for I had been a fan for a long time, and yet felt that they had delivered an excellent, albeit more commercial offering for the public to suck up (and for which the Tubes might actually make some well-deserved money, for a change!)
When I heard the cut, "Tip Of My Tongue" on San Francisco's "KSAN The Jive 95," I rushed to the music store to get my copy of "Outside Inside." I was so impressed with "Tip Of My Tongue," that even if it had been the only good tune on the tape, I would have counted it worth the cost.
This is why I'm so shocked to read other amazon reviewers writing that the only good tune is the first track, "She's A Beauty." I'm sorry, but that is just a false statement. I know people all have their own tastes, etc., but it's just untrue to say that all of the other tunes are just "filler."
My tastes in music have never been what anyone would call mainstream. There are no best of the 70s or best of the 80s or best of the 90s compilations out there that have even ONE tune on them that represents what I like. Therefore, I think I'm qualified to make the following statement: The Tubes DID present a more commercial type of music on "The Completion Backwards Principle," and "Outside Inside." However, just because it is more comercial doesn't mean it's not good. Those two albums are excellent - the songs show talent in all areas: Writing, singing, musicianship and recording technique.
Could it be that the reason they titled this album "Outside Inside" is because for YEARS they were thoroughly OUTside the mainstream in their approach to music, and then they put together two albums which were closer to being INside the mainstream? It's a thought. Even if this is true, there's STILL enough of the Tubes' own individualism and signature to keep these two albums very interesting. (You gotta love it when Martha sings, "You better keep that thing on a chain!" on "Monkey Time.")
If you are an 80s music fan, these two albums are mandatory to your collection.
just not very good.......2006-12-27
I haven't listened to this in a long time, but came across it again and decided to give it a whirl.
The first song everyone "knows" and is decent. The rest, just not very good.
I rarely remove things from my iTunes library, but everything but the first song was deleted here.
BGO finally gets it right..........2006-06-22
Unlike its predecessor, Completion Backward Principle, which suffers from BGO's unexplained ineptness with reissues, this one meets the mark and sounds great with newly remastered clarity. They even included the once omitted "Monkey Time" version that Martha Davis balked on after it came out. Previous versions included the alternate single version sung by Michele Gray. Nice to have both finally. A worthy follow up, although far from their earlier efforts, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Solid piece of commercial rock.......2005-08-31
To many this was a Tubes sell out album as many songs were aimed directly at the charts, but there's really nothing wrong here unless you just want to deprive a band from having any mainstream success. The Tubes paid their dues through the 1970s setting a standard for wild weird shows that got them banned in many cities throughout the states. They played thousands of shows without the benefit of having any chart success, but as the 1980s dawned, the band, starting to get a bit long in the tooth, searched for chart success by spoofing the corporate yuppie idiot public with the fine "The Completion Backwards Principle" and sought to have more success with a straight-up pop effort. "She's a Beauty" put the band all over MTV and the rest of the album delivers fine pop songs. The beautiful 'Fantastic Delusion" the neck snapping R&B of "Tip of my Toungue" and the catchy "Theme Park" all work well under the expert production of David Foster. Also welcome is the hard rocking "Out of the Business" (with a killer hook). There's also the usual Tubes weirdness (Wild Women of Wongo, Drums, Monkey Time) to go along with the straight-ahead songs. The album was a sucess but petered out after a short run which pee-off Fee Waybill enough that he basically lambasted the public on the David Letterman Show with good reason. The band paid their dues, wrote great songs, were a second to none live act, but couldn't get no respect. I understand him completely. The band deserved better.
There's more here...........2004-09-27
There's more here then meets the eye...or the ear. Everyone will recognize "She's A Beauty", but the rest of the CD, is well worth listening....even though the other review listed here calls it "filler"! I gave this 5 stars because it's not only my favourite Tubes release, but it contains my favourite Tubes song...No Not Again. If you liked "Completion Backwards Principle" you will enjoy this CD as well. If you can still find copies of this CD, buy it! These guys were way ahead of there time, and there music still holds up, some 20 years later.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

i love this cd-the praise and worship words are wonderful.
he has a special voice and writing ability.
love it......love it...........2006-10-08
This cd is as good as his first one. I kept that cd playing off and on for months in my car. Now this one is kept in the cd player. The songs are either upbeat and/or worshipful. Love it. Highly recommended.
Asi,asi.......2006-08-07
I don't know what to say about this album. Some of it is fantastic, but the rest of it is slow and pretty much the same lyrics and tune. I'm sorry to say that I did drift off somewhere in the middle of this album. I hope Jadon's next CD is more upbeat. And for those of you who don't speak spanish asi,asi means so,so.
Loved this CD the first time I listened to it!.......2006-05-12
Usually it takes me a few times to get into a CD completely. There are a few songs that I know and like, so I buy it. Then I have to get to know the rest of the songs. Not so with Life on the Inside. From the first time I listened to the CD, I loved every song, and found myself wanting to listen to it again right away. Now after listening to it a half a dozen times, I feel like I have heard these songs for years. I had to check Jadon's other CD to make sure they weren't repeats (I knew that "What if" was). And sure enough, they were all new songs! Great CD...definately deserves some airtime and awards!
Great Singer/Songwriter!.......2006-03-09
LIFE ON THE INSIDE is the second album for Christian artist Jadon Lavik. It offers thirteen songs--eleven new songs and two songs from his previous album MOVING ON FAITH.
First of all, I just have to say how happy I am to see that he has released a second album. I absolutely loved his first album, and so my hopes were high that he'd be involved in Christian music for many years to come. One of the things I love about Jadon Lavik's music is the fact that he writes or co-writes almost all of his songs! I find that so refreshing and amazing.
1) Changing Happy. The first track of the album is a great song with a great message. "I've always found that happiness hides. Just around the corner just out of my reach. And the moment that its found the next that its missing. And I need to change my own definition." What should be the source of his happiness? Nearness to God! Great biblical message. Musically pleasing as well. Jadon's style is acoustic to light rock in my opinion. Very pleasant indeed. 5 stars.
2) Father. The second track on the album is a slower song. A very beautiful song about prayer. "Tears are falling over me like rain/ You have been so faithful time and again/ And forever I'm reminded of your grace/ Beautiful grace." 5 stars.
3) Nothing Compares. The third track is a faster song. It is about how nothing in this world compares to God. He is above all things. "I've searched this world far and wide. And found the truth that's changed my life. These things I buy these things I do. None can take the place of you." 4 stars.
4) What if. The fourth track is originally from Jadon's first album MOVING ON FAITH. I loved the song then, and I love the song now. It's about how God's love is not conditional on us--on how good or bad we're doing in life. 4.5 stars
5) Come to Me. I have always loved the Bible verse this song is based on (Matthew 11:28) and I am so happy to see it as such a central part of this song. Great message. Great music. 4.5 stars
6) Hear Our Song is a praise song. It praised God for his glory and his love. It illustrates that man's chief duty is to delight in God. "And we live for your glory and we live by your love/ And we sing of your glory and we sing of your love." Great song. It is in some ways a simpler song because of its repetition, but it's a beautiful song. 5 stars.
7) Just Like You is a good song--a true song--about the Christian experience--asking for God's guidance and grace to make us more like Him. "Comforter provider. Protector and friend. Here I am again. Asking for your mighty hand. To lead me once again lead me once again." 4.5 stars
8) On the Outside is a nice song. It's about how Earth is not our home and that we're to be looking forward to our eternal home in Heaven. "Life's always felt like a long and endless dream. Where tests and trials bring you to the final wake up scene. Now I'm not saying I'll ever waste a day. I'm just gonna live like I was never meant to stay." 4.5 stars.
9) Meant to Be is a nice song about how God's timing is always better than ours and that even after discouraging and difficult times in our lives, we'll come to recognize through faith that it was for our ultimate good. "Now I see the reasons for all of those seasons wondering just how my life would connect. My life would connect but you knew all along all along." 5 stars.
10) Never Alone is a beautiful song. By far one of my favorites on the album. "He has made with us a promise. Built on the most amazing grace. Found in the childlike surrender. Just the smallest seed of faith. Blessed assurance hopeful future. Peace to calm the mighty storm. When it seems like nobody else cares. Yes my God he will be there." And the chorus is incredible: "And I am never alone never forgotten or an after-thought to you. Oh and I am never alone not left to my own strength to make it to make it through." How wonderful to be reminded that we are never an afterthought to God! 5 stars
11) Searching is a song orginally found on MOVING ON FAITH. It's a good song about the human's natural longing for truth and to find some meaning in life beyond one's self. 4 stars.
12) His Name Shall Be Called weaves some of the many names and titles of Jesus into its lyrics. Very nice. For example, one verse goes: "His name shall be called Prince of peace, the almighty, son of the living God, Ancient of days, alpha and omega, the great I AM." 4.5 stars.
13) It's Yours is a song of surrender to God. Very nice. "Shine your light through this broken surrendered life." 4.5 stars
Overall, I feel that his second album, LIFE ON THE INSIDE, is even better than his first album MOVING ON FAITH. While both albums are great for showcasing this new artists' work as a singer and songwriter, his second album has a greater quantity of amazing songs.
I look forward to giving this album many repeated listenings.

2003 live release for rock act featuring Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon), Russell Allan (Symphony X), Damian Wilson (ex-Threshold), & Floor Jansen (After Forever). This 'intergalactic' concert was captured in September 2002. 18 tracks. SPV.
Customer Reviews:
Intergalactic Space Crusaders........2006-01-07
This live cd and dvd preformance portrays the very best of Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Star One project and Ayreon project. Some of the vocalists are Russel Allen (Symphony X), Floor Jansen (After Forever), and Irene Jansen (Ayreon) among many others. The blaze through a set that spans "Space Metal", "Into the Electric Castle", "The Universal Migrator (both parts)" ,and "Actual Fantasy." Some highlights are the Stargate-like set in which Floor and Irene spend a lot of the time singing beautifully, the drum and bass solos, and the dueling guitar and keyboard segment. If you are a fan of any of Arjen's projects or like very complex progressive metal with elaborate concept albums then this is a must buy. I shall be listening to "Intergalactic Space Crusaders", one of the best songs ever!
One of the best live albums I have ever heard.......2004-11-23
This is the 2 CD set with the DVD of Star One's live performance.
You are really lucky to hear a good live album, especially with the highly overproduced CD's of today. No overdubs and its unlikely that the singer can sing as high or clear as on the CD. But not so here. Arjen surrounds himself with good singers and musicians, and the sound is huge. True, some of the lyrics are cheesy, and Robert doesn't do so well in spots, but the live versions are often better than the studio versions, with a higher energy.
Standout tracks are "Songs on the Ocean", "Dawn of a Million Souls" (my personal favorite), "Into the Black Hole" (Damian is great here), "Valley of the Queens", and "Isis and Osiris". All are much better than the studio tracks and some have different arrangements which make them better live. Russell Allen and Damian are vocally great. Floor and Irene Jansenn mesh together perfectly. Irene compliments Floor's voice very well. Peter Vink's bass and Ed Warby's drums tones are huge. Arjen's guitar tone is also very good.
The DVD is good. According to Arjen's notes he never intended on releasing the DVD. It was recorded with one or two cameras and sound off the board. Then two fans submitted their extra video shots from in the crowd and they mixed them together into the video. It is surprisingly smooth, although a couple of times seems out of sync (hence the previous reviewer's comment on Robert's lip syncing). The stage is really small for so many singers/players. But overall my friend and I liked the DVD.
Arjen's "Human Equation" CD is in my CD player at home and I listen to it all the time. Star One live is my main car CD rotation.
The best $20 you could spend!.......2004-02-29
This, my friends, is THE best live album I have ever purchased. It comes with 2 CDs and one DVD of an amazing 2+ hour show that will completely floor you (no pun intended). Performed by Guitarist/Singer/Keyboardist mastermind Arjen Lucassen, keyboardist Joost Van Den Broek, bassist Peter Vink, drummer Ed Warby, and special guest flutist Ewa Albering. But the stars of the show are the singers- Symphony X's Russel Allen, Threshold's Damian Wilson, After Forever's Floor Jansen, her sister Irene Jansen, and finally, the very freaky Robert Soeterboek.
The show in Rijssen, Holland, "lifts off", and you're on a nonstop thrillride all the way until the end. Whether the music is loud and the lights are flashing, or it's slowed down and the keyboards are haunting, there's never a dull moment. An amazing array of material is performed, not just Star One. There are about half a dozen Star One songs, and then there are tracks from every Ayreon album. Fans of Into the Electric Castle will really enjoy the spot on (or really, improved) playing of Isis and Osiris, The Amazing Flight in Space (in which Arjen and Joost have a soloing battle/shoving match, truly hilarious), Valley of the Queens (this is a real gem, an accoustic ballad with Floor doing a superb job), The Castle Hall, and in the encore, Two Gates. The rest of the songs are quite flawless as well. Songs like The Dream Sequencer are amazingly improved with the energy of a live setting.
The DVD also includes some bonus features that didn't have to be there, but certainly aren't bad. A humurous set of behind the scenes footage, an additional encore/closing song Space Truckin, which didn't fit on the audio CDs, two songs from the show in Tilburg, and a nice photo gallery. Not shabby. None of what you're getting in this package is shabby, and again I'll say, it's a fantastic deal. You're getting the entire show in CD and DVD format, for the price of what would be one DVD alone.
In conclusion- if you're a fan of progressive rock/metal music, even if you don't particularly enjoy Sci Fi and Fantasy subjects, get this album. It is surely one of the best live shows you'll ever seen recorded, period.
Russell Allen voice is amazing.......2004-01-25
You will never hear a more perfect Rock voice than Allen. It really shows because he is along side some other very talented singers.
He is like Paul Rodger, Steve Walsh, and Ronnie James Dio all in one but better.
Great buy with the dvd thrown in there
Hilarious but excellent at the same time.......2004-01-21
This is an excellent CD/DVD package. Musically, this is heavy, progressive and driving, but melodic at the same time. A few songs remind me of the band Rainbow especially "Set your controls". Great choice and range of vocalists here; Robert Soterberg being the David coverdale lookalike baratone( he is also a terrible lip-sinker, actually he is quite hillarious at times, especially when he begins to sing a song too early-watch the DVD and see for yourself), Russell Allen has a great all round voice and Damien Wilson having a slightly higher tonal range.
From my point of view, the star performer and suprise here is Damien Wilson. This guy is incredible, what a fantastic singer. A very talented performer, the song "into the black hole" is fantastic due to the powerful and haunting Wilson vocals.
This Arjen guy is also very talented. This was the 1st time I had heard any of his stuff and I was impressed with the quality and depth of songs. A very good buy.

Worth picking up.......2005-06-25
I do like this album. They basically play all of V, and a few songs from Divine Wings and Twilight live.
I dont care for the mix on this though, hence not getting 5 stars. The drums are kinda up in the mix and guitars and too quiet. Thats just my taste though, others may prefer that.
I'm not going to go into attempts to sell potential new fans on Symphony X. Its your loss if you dont check them out.

I don't know what these other people were talking about, when they were complaining about the faster tempo on some of the tracks, first of all just because you heard them do it on a studio album doesn't mean that is how they're supposed to play the song. If they want to up the tempo it's their perogative. the vocals sound a little strained on the second disc. i think he's got a little problem focusing the pitch with his voice on that disc. my only other problem with the cd is them hacking apart candlelight fantasia, but then again, that was their performance of it. i really would've liked a 7 disc box set version instead of just a double cd (in case they're reading this.) but finally it's a shame bands like symphony X don't get any media attention at all, and they're forced to play 45 minute opening sets because i don't think they got the fan base to support a headlining tour so... everybody who buys this album, play it for 5 people.. and we'll see if we can remedy that
Good live album just shy of perfect........2004-06-24
I decided to get this after being impressed with V and Twilight in Olympus. Every one of the guys in Symphony X is very talented and can really play. The first CD is excellent from start to finish; songs like 'Evolution' and 'The Eyes of Medusa' are awesome along with Michael Romeos guitar solo in 'On the breath of Poseidon'. The guy is a really amazing guitarist and although many people think he sounds like yngwie, I think he is a lot more controlled and has a more melodic sense.
I also like the way S X get the crowd involved, unlike most other progressive bands. My theory on live performances is that a band is on stage to put a show on and not just to play their music. S X are really good entertainers as well as musicians and they also play their songs differently live to what's on the studio recordings, which is great because similar bands such as Dream Theater usually just stand there playing their songs live exactly the same way as they do on the record. Even though DT are an amazing band, they can be so boring to watch and listen to live sometimes, unlike S X.
The second CD however is where I found some minor problems. Some of the songs are played far faster than those on the record. Many people complain about progressive bands doing this live and I'm sorry to say in most cases; it is true! Listen to Dream Theater playing 'The Mirror' live for example; it is far faster than that on the record. The other thing that bugs me on CD2 is that the keyboards are too low on the mix. S X has always been a symphonic band and without the keyboards being in the shot they just do not sound the same. Russels vocals do not sound as strong on CD2, this is because I think those particular songs were recorded 6 months after CD1 so his voice is probably a bit worn from constant touring.
However I can't complain too much because `The divine wings of tragedy' at the end of CD2 is amazing, I think the live performance of that song is absolutely stunning. Overall I really enjoyed this album and I love their music. I highly recommend it to any Power or Prog metal fans, Keep up the good work guys!!!!
The heart of power progressive...............2003-09-26
Me refiero a V: The new mythology suite.
Two months ago, SYMPHONT X played live with Stratovarius at Polìgono Anoeta in San Sebastian, Spain. The live perfoming of SYMPHONY X proves that we are in the presence of one of one of the best megagroups today. They can play pure classical music or easily change to a powerful power metal. To consider SYMPHONY X as a megagroup oriented to power metal is being inocent. Just listen to this double CD: CD 1 include one of their best studio works, V: the new mythology suite. Nevertheless, the best of this live album is CD 2. Church of the Machine and Through the Looking Glass (from the album Twlight at the Olympus are simply amazing. Romeo at the lead guitar, Pinnella playing the magestic keyboards, Rullo at the drums, the suberb Lepond at bass guitar and the incredible voice of Allen configures this megagroup..If you add the live vertion of Oddesey you can imagine what we are talking about...
No Absinthe And Rue?! 5 STAR ESSENTIAL RATING! *****.......2003-03-12
Absinthe And Rue is one of my favorite songs from this band, and I couldn't believe they left it off of here, but If I had to name every song I wanted on this live release, it would be their entire catalog! I knew from the beginning that this was going to get 5 stars from me, the first disc, playing out almost the entire Mythology Suite album, with the exception of something like four tracks, and then blazing through some amazing playing on disc two. These guys know how to play live. Not too much talking with the audience, just kicking a** and taking names. I had only two complaints among this masterpiece, for any fan of Symphony X or progressive/power metal: one, I couldn't believe that there were no 'real' solos as far as Michael Romeo and Jason Rullo? A guitar and drum solo would have made this 2 disc set even more unbelievable sounding; my second gripe: I couldn't belive there were no songs of The Damnation Game or their 1st self-titled CD??? The 1st one had so many great songs on it and Damnation Game wasn't anything to laugh at either? I would have gone for a full three disc blowout, more songs off those two and the guitar and drum solos. So what if it seemed like the Dream Theater, Scenes set? Compared to the last Dream Theater release, I think Symphony X's Odyssey, blew away any and all progressive metal bands for a long time. With all my complaining done, you get a solid 2 disc live set of songs that will amaze, shock, and stun you into listening to these guys even more! Don't miss this one!! ***** 5 STAR ESSENTIAL X-RATING FROM SCRAGGY'S TOMB OF POWER METAL, USA. Cheers!
