    3 out of 5 stars GIMME A BREAK.......2007-06-13

Honestly dont want to knock any folks who generate good vibes and healing thoughtwaves.

    5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Group.......2003-02-06

The Sounds of Blackness has always been an eclectic group. They originally started out as a choir from Macalester College. The group evolved into a community choir and into the group we all know and love. In the past, the "Sounds" performed many secular songs from the black experience (i.e., "Sir Duke", "God Bless The Child" as well as sacred songs such as "Jesus Christ is the Way" and "Steal Away"). So often, vocalists are pigeonholed into singing only certain styles of music. I, personally, sing the entire spectrum. However, the message must be good and the music melodious! In fact, I am a former member of the "Sounds," so I know of what I speak!

4 out of 5 stars Good CD, But Not As Good As The Others.......2002-06-08

Sounds of Blackness is well known for R&B/gospel hits such as "Optimistic" and "The Pressure" as well as many Negro spirituals. The group's first 2 CDs were the ones that brought them the most fame. In their third CD, "Time for Healing", they somewhat stray away from what they usually sing. It is possible to mistake them for a straight-out R&B group. There are great hits like "Hold On (Change is Coming)" which is my personal favorite. They also do remakes like "Love Train". I really wish that Ann Nesby was on this CD, but she decided to go solo. Oh well. That's how the music business is, I guess! Even though the group loses many great things that they had from the other CDs, it is still a great one, and I recommend it to any Sounds of Blackness fan.

    4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Addition to the Group's Discography.......2001-08-30

Like the ensemble's three previous albums, "A Time for Healing" features uplifting grooves, a marvelous blend of old and new, brilliant instrumentation, and harmonies that truly are heavenly. Director Gary Hines and company expertly excel on cuts like "Hold On (Change Is Comin'"), a song that owes much to the music of the late Roger Troutman, "Love Will Never Change," a mellow and compassionate tune, "God Cares," a song that should be an anthem for the faithful, and the title cut. The more traditional offering, "We Are Gonna Make It Through," soars with majesty and power while the group "gets down" with remakes of the classics "Love Train" and "You Can Make It If You Try."
The best cut, however, is "So Far Away" which begins with an awesome trumpet solo and then jumps into a Calypso-flavored rhythm featuring a sample of the 60's hit "Girl from Ipanema." One can't stay seated when hearing this one.
Notably missing is Ann Nesby, soloist for many of the group's first successes, as well as the producing team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Hopefully, the trio will return for some future musical endeavors.

5 out of 5 stars Energizing, invigorating, rythmic and divine !.......2000-05-23

The text and rythems on this wonderful CD have inspired me time and time again to get up, move on and rise above and beyond my own limits. I really think this is what the artists wanted and that is exactly what they have acheived - at least with me! The text is deep, wise and loving, while the music is soothing on some numbers or invigorating like a sparkling, fresh shower on others.

I thank the artists behind this musical creation for working together to make a great CD.

Like his jazz counterpart Jai Uttal, Krishna Das is a U.S. native whose life was changed forever by the discovery of the Hindu religion. Yet unlike Uttal, who has explored the realms of world and jazz music and collaboration, Das has focused his energies toward the art of Indian classical chant exclusively. The result is a long career of spreading the love and spirituality of the Hindustani tradition while gleaning a large following that's included the likes of Sting and Madonna. But this isn't the reason to respect Das, rather his investment in using chant to heal, find the grace of God, and purify the soul. Though Das's voice falls somewhat flat on this two-CD album, he's accompanied by a wonderful gaggle of percussionists, whose layered cadences create a tapestry as rich in color and detail as an Indian ragamala itself. The accompanying choir of some 20 chanters is the other highlight, offering a cold salve to Das's harsh, monotonous tone. But after all, the point of chant is to invoke God, not please the ear, and if this is your goal, Live on Earth well satisfies. --Karen K. Hugg

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!.......2007-07-02

I first heard Krishna Das on a You Tube video. Luckily someone had left a message as to who was singing. Krishna Das was a disciple of Indian holy man Neem Karoli Baba in the early 70's. He brought back to America a love of Hindu devotional songs, or kirtans. The music on this two CD set should be in everyone's collection. Krishnas Das sings in a lower register with some backing by a chorus of mostly female voices. Many of the songs repeat the lyrics over and over, which gives them the feeling of chanting a mantra. Hanuman Chaleesa on the first CD is worth the price of admission alone. Run out and get this music.

    5 out of 5 stars Hindoo Hootenanny!.......2006-02-05

I bought this recording years ago as a result of a positive review in the New York Times. But that was a very busy period in my life and I only listened to it once or twice and didn't really pay much attention. But yesterday I found this among a mountain of unsorted CDs and put it on. I love this whole 2-CD album! There's something very infectious and uplifting about it. Analyzing it, the melodies are not all that different from the folk music of the 50s and early 60s, but the words are in Sanskrit (I assume) and the musical instruments are Southeast Asian. The result is a good-spirited concert reminiscent of the old hootenannies. This is Peace and Love time. Or Be-In/Love-In time. I've been playing this 2-CD album solidly for the past two days. It has put me in a good mood. The lyrics are translated in the accompanying booklet, but the type is so small that I find it difficult to read. But no matter, these are religious songs, sung prayers and hymns of praise.

In general I don't care for background music, but I think this works very well in that capacity just as mood music. I can't promise that it will affect everyone the way it has affected me, but I've found it very uplifting. How can I not give it five stars?

4 out of 5 stars Ramine of all times.......2005-08-11

This CD is definitely a stress buster. One feels in control after listening to his CD's and feel they can fight the world. It induces self-satisfaction, contentment and happiness.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Krishna.......2004-02-10

All of Krishna Das' music should be standard equipment on any new vehicle in this day and age, with over population and crazy drivers, air bags being just underneath that. For if these mantras were playing in your stereo there may be no need for the later.
In all seriousness, Krishna Das will bring your spirit to a new level and erase your stress. This coming from someone who hadn't spent much time in the spiritual realm...until now! Get any of his CD's and he may unlock a part of you, you never knew existed.

    5 out of 5 stars KD's Best Work Yet.......2003-12-24

I have been a devotional singer for many years and have most everything that is available. I have all of KD's other releases and "Live on Earth" is his best work yet and I don't normally like live performances. With the exception of a few live "mistakes" that would normally be edit out, you wouldn't know this was a live CD.

LOE has both a perfectly balanced devtional and energetic feel to it which is the sign of a good kirtan/bhajan. Even my Indian devotional singing friends who are usually very picky when it comes to devotional music, all love "Live on Earth". Most all of KD's good tracks from his other releases are on LOE so with this you have his best. If you have only one KD CD, this is the one.

    5 out of 5 stars Superb! Definitive........2003-08-13

AT LAST!! A near-definitive RVW 4th, in wonderful sound.

First, the performance. It's wonderful, to my ears the best since RVW's own some 70 years ago, but in rather better sound (!!). It's driven, tense, urgent, magnetic, mesmerizing, angry, powerful, searing, gut wrenching (literally) and disturbing. For the first time since you could first apprehend its power in RVW's and Mitropoulis recordings, this fourth comes across as being as motorific as Prokofiev, as visionary as Nielsen and as angry as Shostakovich, but adding the two qualities RVW's great teacher, Parry enjoined him to display, the temperament of an englishman and a democrat. The result is that the fourth finally takes its rightful place as a great 20th century symphony rather than a "fine" `or an "interesting" one. This is what RVW meant!!

I have owned the Mitropoulis, Previn and Handley recordings and heard the RVW, Boult and Thomson. I found Mitropoulis energetic and compelling, Handley a little light-on, to be honest (certainly compared to his marvellous 3rd and 5th), the Boult and Previn fine but ultimately unconvincing and the Thomson close to the best but a little rough. But this, ---- this is complete!!

The LSO plays brilliantly for Hickox, who gets more out of them in this piece than other fine conductors. Despite my words about energy, the LSO and Hickox also bring a subtlety to this recording which enhances the stature of both symphony and performance. Hear the "chill and eeriness" (to quote the Penguin guide yearbook) in the second movement and you'll get a taste for the range of their achievement here. And everywhere, even in the midst of the anger and passion, are the great tunes VW couldn't help but write, all played sublimely.

No wonder the Penguin guide awards this a Rosette.

As to the sound, I loved it. This 24 bit, PCM, 96 khz recording sounds wonderful. It captures the proper relationship of the instruments to each other and to the themes they're given.

One of my bugbears with all-DSD recordings has been that although dynamic range is wide, what we tend to get given is a differentiation between loud and soft, with even soft passages and soft playing still crystal clear and sometimes even "spotlit". That's fine when the theme or the instrument playing it is meant to be dominant (as opposed to just heard as part of the fabric) but, for me, can distort musical balances, presenting a crystal clear but fairly monochromatic picture.

What I like about this (and Hickox's recording of the "London" )is that instruments are present in context, - and are sometimes dominant and at others deliberately subordinate (not just "soft"). They are truly part of an orchestra and an orchestral sound and the internal emotional balance of the composition in a way which some (i hate to say this, Telarc) DSD recordings aren't. There is more to orchestral sound than dynamic range and there are good reasons why we use the word "sonority" instead of just "sound".

Anyway, I felt that the recording brings out the best of PCM and DSD with the result being a very natural orchestral sonority. At times the strings may be silkier and the brass may not blare as much as in some DSD derived recordings, but when the brass is meant to call out, it does, and when the strings are meant to sing out in visionary fashion in the middle of anger and betrayal, they do too!

I've over-run my usual self-imposed review length and still haven't mentioned the other 2 works, the lovely Mass in G minor and the six songs "In time of War", so I'll be brief. The Mass is sharp and dramatic as well as lovely, with, thankfully, women's voices instead of boys' (a purely personal taste, I know, but I HATE pre-pubescent boys' voices, and consequently, most recordings of English choral music). The songs are intense and lyrical. They are both also, to again quote the Penguin Guide, "given superb Chandos sound".

If I sound breathless at the end of this review, it's because that's exactly how I felt when the Symphony ended. Bravo, RVW, LSO, Hickox and Chandos. More, please, more !!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A rarely achieved perfection in serenity - Michael Hoppé.......2007-06-28

As Michael Hoppé (Grammy nominated artist) states this album is a great achievement in ambient music. It is healing, soothing, perfect for massage, Reiki and other purposes. Lloyd Barde from Backroads says: "The Music of RESONANCE takes on visual qualities and otherworldly realms with a grace and ease that is easy to be with, and can be revisited often." My personal experience is listening to RESONANCE gives me a feeling of peace and tranquility and the state of being One with the Universe.

3 out of 5 stars Expected great massage type relaxation music.......2007-02-07

I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unless you listen to all tracks first.
I was not pleased with the depth or complexity of the music. Being a Reiki Master and Pranic Healer and Polarity Therapist, I've purchased quite a few albums over the years. This is on my, "sell on ebay" list.
It doesn't quite transform or take one on a journey or inspire the imagination. I found Halpern, Master Charles, and some of the others much better and more appropriate for my needs. I am definately disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars mediated state.......2006-12-21

This is my favorite ambient/synth album to massage with. If you are a massage therapist then you know that music can affect your client. Resonance will relax and put your clients in mediated state. This album will do that every time! Doucet and Miraz really complement each of very well. At times I can't even tell who is playing. It's like both of their playing just melts together as one. If you like ambient music then you must buy Resonance.

    5 out of 5 stars Maximum Lush!.......2002-05-29

Resonance now takes the place of Brian Eno and Harold Budd's "The Pearl" as my favorite ambient/synth album. Doucet and Miraz' playing complement each other beautifully. As anyone who has ever recorded synthesizer knows, the key to success is two-fold: First, the sounds themselves must be top-notch. There are a lot of cheezy synth patches in the world, and happily, none of them find their way onto this album. Secondly, since synthesizers are potentially cold and mechanical sounding, the PLAYING has to be expressive and sensitive. Again, Doucet and Miraz do not disappoint. My favorite track is the opening "Dancing Shadows" which features a haunting melody played on what I believe is a vintage Moog synthesizer, or a darn-good imitation thereof.

As for the mood, I would say that in a word, Resonance is REASSURING. Although it definitely has all the best features of space music, for me, there is just enough melodic/harmonic content to keep me in my body, and ultimately, after a few tracks, I end up feeling like all is well after all. This one is staying in my rotation for a long time to come.

I suggest you buy it. Listen to Resonance in the morning, and add a little bliss to your whole day.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace is Amazing!.......2007-05-19

I heard Mark O'connor's performance on this CD before it was released. A friend of mine had Mark and myself over for dinner and Mark shared this track with us. He said the original idea behind the arrangement was one of hope and redemption, but after meditating on the true nature of the songs inclusion on this compilation, he charged the Orchestra and it's director with a different task. It is the saddest musical moment I have ever heard. The Orchestra plays a low peddle while Mark's violin becomes a mournfull bag-pipe suffering the losses of the lost and their families. We stood in the living room and cried. Sometimes it's just not proper to look ahead and press on. Sometimes suffering is the correct response.
