The WOW collections to date offer something for everyone and seldom disappoint. However, WOW Hits 2005 may have set the bar higher in terms of variety of new acts and a bountiful harvest of creativity. If we are to take the producers of the WOW collections at their word, then these Purple and Silver discs offer the year's best. Several good listens later, you'll agree that there is a bright future ahead for contemporary Christian music. Sure we have the bigger name acts of Mercy Me ("Here With Me"), Newsboys ("You Are My King"), Jars of Clay ("Show You Love"), and maybe the year's best single from Steven Curtis Chapman "All Things New." But there's plenty of new blood as well with Matthew West ("More"), Kutless ("Sea of Faces"), Building 429 ("Glory Defined"), Bethany Dillon ("All I Need"), and bonus baby Day of Fire ("Cornerstone). Praise and worshippers will be pleased with the inclusion of David Crowder ("Open Skies") and the delightful Zschech ("Pray"). While WOW Hits 2005 gathers a lot of radio hits, there's no doubt that more critical voices may clamor about various omissions. Ask a roomful of Christian music fans to put the year's 30 best on a WOW release and you'll get a roomful of answers. But all can agree that WOW Hits 2005 proclaims that the year 2004 was a good one. --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars "A great preview of today's top artists" by BJ.......2007-04-06

From the stirring moments of Mark Shultz's "Letters From War", Selah's "You Lift Me Up", Avalon's "You Were There", and Mercyme's "Here With Me", all the way to the upbeat songs, WOW Hits 2005 is a definite favorite.
My favorite song is a song listed above, Avalon's "You Were There" from their 2004 release The Creed. This song is about Christ being everywhere "in the midst of danger's snare" and "in the unclear", and also about Him rising from the dead. The perfect song for Easter, this song gets my vote for the very best.
Also featured on this spectacular compilation is Steven Curtis Chapman, Matthew West, Newsboys, Stacie Orrico, tobyMac, Jeremy Camp, Third Day, and more.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!:)

Beautiful music. It is perfect to listen to with impressionable young children in the back seat. Only a couple songs were too sugary the rest were great.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Compilation.......2006-01-16

Another great compilation of the ever-growing diversity of pop Christian music. Perhaps one of the best ever.

In 10 years, Steven Curtis Chapman has charted 26 No. 1 hits, three Grammy Awards, and 32 Dove Awards (Christian music's equivalent of the Grammys). This release offers some of Chapman's best work in addition to two newer singles, "Not Home Yet" and "I Am Found in You," and rerecordings of "Lord of the Dance" and "The Walk," from the brilliant Signs of Life release. The latter two, labeled "Abbey Road versions," sound live, with soulful harmonica and additional guitar work not heard on the originals. Chapman's catalog of hits traces a developing and masterful artist who gains confidence and quality with each new release. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-07-07

Great Cd! Love his music and his message. I plsy him alot snd he is very comforting and inspirational as well as hip and upbeat. If you have never listened to him, this is the one to start with.

5 out of 5 stars A "Home"run.......2007-05-18

One of, if not THE, greatest CD that Chapman has ever compiled. There aren't any words for his songs. They hit "home" in ways indescribable. "Not Home Yet" will forever be my favorite SCC song; I based my entire high school valedictorian speech on it. By far one of my favorite CD's that I own. I'd recommend it to absolutely anybody.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to get introduced to SCC.......2005-10-07

I really like Steven Curtis Chapman's songs. The music is very good guitar-driven rhythms and the lyrics are great. This Greatest Hits cd captures the best songs from the first half of his career (First Hand to Signs of Life). I wish it would have included "Let Us Pray" and "I Will Not Go Quietly", but other than that I found it to be a wonderful way to hear a lot of his songs. This CD is a great place to start you SCC collection; I'm sure Greatest Hits 2 is in the working to gather songs from his latest cds (Speechless, Declaration, All About Love, and All Things New). Now go out and get it! (I would have given it 4.5 stars but amazon does not allow that yet!)

5 out of 5 stars the best of the early years.......2004-10-12

This collection contains some of the strongest songs of Steven Curtis Chapman's early career, and serves as a launching pad for all the albums to come. He has grown in strength and confidence over the years, and this album singles out those tracks that have captured him at his peak through each stage.

Two brand new tracks, Not Home Yet and I Am Found In You, give us a glimpse of the Steven Curtis Chapman to come - a much more audibly passionate and uninhibited artist than when he first started out. New versions of Lord of the Dance and The Walk (recorded at Abbey Road Studios) start to capture some of the energy found in Chapman's live performances.

With so many excellent songs to choose from, it must have been difficult to narrow it down to these 14 tracks. You may be surprised at some of the songs that are missing, but you definitely won't be disappointed with any of the ones that made the cut.

Larry Hehn, author of Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory

4 out of 5 stars Good Man.......2004-08-27

While, I'm not a "marching in line" conventional, conservative type Christian, I can appreciate Steven's heartfelt melodies and searching lyrics. In some of his lyrics I find an innocence that is refreshing, refreshing in this day and age when a lot of people assume they KNOW all the answers. He is less arrogant than some of the other contemporary Christian singers.

Seniority does have its privileges. In this case, Twila Paris has nearly 20 years of contemporary Christian recordings from which to cull a greatest-hits release. Longtime fans will recognize the early CCM hits "The Warrior Is a Child," "Lamb of God," and the worship standard "He Is Exalted." However, Paris is a notable songwriter and had always had a keen ability to match her contemporaries. New cuts "Sparks and Shadows" and "Faithful Father" are as good as anything on Christian radio, and the ending "God of Miracles" is a personal, moving tribute to Paris's newborn baby. Special highlights include the folksy "The Joy of the Lord" and the guitar-slick "Run to You." In both cases, Paris--in true songwriter form--molds her music to the producer's style (Richard Souther on "Joy of the Lord" and Charlie Peacock on "Run to You"). This release proves that Paris is by no means finished with her great career. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars no room for fear.......2007-03-16

Twila Paris is the grande dame of Christian music, a classy fixture on the stage, and a genuine voice that has never been overproduced or diluted by crossover ambitions.

Paris is one of those artists who projects enough real-human street cred to her fans that it seems natural to most of them to refer to her simply by her first name. This collection of 'Twila Songs' links old with new to great effect.

'This if no time for fear
This the time for faith and determination
Don't lose the vision here, carried away by the motion
Hold onto all that you hide in your heart.
There is one thing that has always been true
It holds the world together: God is in control.'

These lines from the album's opener go to the core of one of Paris' central convictions, one that has fueled an astonishingly wide range of styles for a woman who appears demure, and in her most recent more mature incarnations, almost matronly.

If the Lord's sovereignty is a key motif of her song, Paris does not spin this in any triumphalistic direction. To the contrary, she is satisfyingly attentive to both human fragility ('The Warrior is a Child') and nobility ('Faithful Friend').

Yet this conviction is for Paris no mere theological abstraction. Like all good theology, its current flow irrepressibly in the direction of doxology:

'Once in a while my heart gets lonely
Once in a while the night is gloom
Time and again you are the only one
I can hold onto
There never is a moment when you leave my side
I've felt your arms around me every time I've cried
All my life

You have been a faithful Father
I believe you word is true
You have been a faithful Father
I will follow you.'

GREATEST HITS leads one through the adventure of a life lived faithfully and out loud. Some of the songs burst with audacious praise. More often, they articulate for others the genuine article of constancy in the dissonant places, a discipline that has enabled Paris to discern provision where others might spy only a desert's dryness.

This Twila Paris anthology is a collective ode to human courage and divine fidelity in times of both rejoicing and deep distress. It is a mile marker along the way to the maturation of 'Christian music' into something that resembles and echoes its biblical roots and the day-to-day actualization of the real-world faith that those origins continue to nourish.

5 out of 5 stars It's Twila, so it can't really be bad........2007-01-28

This is a nicely-compiled CD, with many songs from later albums. I did not listen to the genre much in the '90's, so several of the songs on this CD were new to me.

Note that "The Warrior is a Child" is the more popular version on this CD, unlike a previous compilation ("A Heart That Knows You") which had a more rudimentary, almost a capella version on it. I bought this CD for that reason - I wanted to have the version of that song that I grew up hearing on Christian radio.

I would've liked to have seen "It All Goes Back" from "Kingdom Seekers" on this CD, but it did have "Runner" so I can't really complain.

As an aside, I agree with Frank King's review of "The Ultimate Collection." If you're looking for the best representation of Twila's career - and truly her greatest hits - buy this CD and a copy of "A Heart That Knows You." You'll get some overlap, but you'll also get "Prince of Peace", "Sweet Victory", and a couple others that are must-haves for an Twila collection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic artist; fantastic retrospective.......2005-02-05

Twila Paris is truly a Christian music pioneer. Her music transcends time and guides the listener into a genuine atmosphere of worship. This album, Greatest Hits, is a good primer to her impressive career. "God is in Control", in addition to being a huge hit, has become an anthem for my family. "The Warrior is a Child" is as true today as it was in 1984 when it was first recorded. "Joy of the Lord", "We Will Glorify", "We Bow Down" "Lamb of God", "How Beautiful" and "He is Exalted" are incredible worship songs that are sung around the world. "Run to You", "I am Not Afraid Anymore" and "Destiny" are excellent examples of Twila's ability to write a hit song. The three new songs are good, but tend to pale when standing next to the classics. This is an excellent album and well worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2004-07-04

This CD was incredible. The words were inspiring and the music was great. This is definitely a CD for all people who like her music. Anyone who buys this will really love it!

5 out of 5 stars The only true Christian songwriter..........2003-07-10

I have listened to Twila Paris music for more than 10 years now! And it is hard to believe, for me, that I am still a fan of hers...

What makes Twila keep her 'audience'??

Simply, I should say her music! Her songs are real and her lyrics are written from the heart. Even if you are not a songwriter or don't play a musical instrument - you can tell Twila writes from the heart.

Most, if not all, of her songs are deep. She has this certain style that she keeps by combining Christian lyrics with a sad melody. It makes the song more 'serious' and I think spiritual.

If you are a musician, and have listened to her songs, then you will know Twila writes in the minor scale. Keeping the songs at a deep and serious feel.

It is something I think other Christian artist don't want to go for. They probably think... Who buys a album filled with sad and depressing melodies (For example: Christ In Us, My Best Friend, The Time Is Now, Every Heart That Is Breaking)?? Well... I DO!

Other Christian artist should stop with the silly and annoying "Baby One More Time" ... and start writing real music like Twila Paris.

Now, for this album: Twila Paris - Greatest Hits... It simply is that... Greatest Hits and I think a collection of beautiful songs that are timeless. The Warrior Is A Child was written many years ago, but still today it is an excellent song!

The Time Is Now, I believe that song with all my heart, since September 11, 2001, I think the lyrics to this song are more powerful than ever...

Every Heart That Is Breaking, Twila writes this song in response to many people out there who deal with 'life' and don't know how to get through it. It deals with people in prison, parents getting a divorce, etc. Again, a true songwriter, she writes what people go through everyday in life.

How Beautiful... Wow!! 'How beautiful' is this song? It is a very beautiful, timeless masterpiece! Even today, I still hear that song on Christian radio!

If you are not familiar with Twila Paris, I suggest buying this album and get a 'feel' into what real Christian music is all about! There are some songs on there that are guaranteed to make you cry!

The folks at Sparrow Records give us the most diverse collection yet in this increasingly popular Wow series. The 30-plus tracks (there are three bonus tracks) testify that contemporary Christian music (CCM) in the first year of the new millennium was worthy. Mainstream acts like Steven Curtis Chapman ("Dive"), Michael W. Smith ("This Is Your Time"), and DC Talk ("Red Letters") are represented, but so are developing singer-songwriters like Nichole Nordeman ("Every Season"), Ginny Owens ("Free"), and Jennifer Knapp ("Into You"). The praise-and-worship contingent is also covered with Passion's live version of "America," Third Day's "King of Glory," and Delirious's "God You Are My God." You've even got an old-time gospel testimonial in CeCe Winans's moving "Alabaster Box." P.O.D.'s delightful "Set Your Eyes to Zion" and Avalon's pop masterpiece "Always Have, Always Will" never made it to the top of mainstream CCM radio but get their rightful listing on Wow 2001, truly a wonderful collection of music and a reason to remain hopeful for the future of CCM. --Michael Lyttle

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best of the WOW Series........2003-11-04

Contemporary Christian music involves such a varied range of styles and mood that to offer a fair and enjoyable sampling is a tough task. In the past, the songs released on WOW anthologies have been conservative at best, profiling mostly the mainstream pop samples of the industry's top artists. With WOW 2001 (and its equally enjoyable 2002 successor -- which is why my review of this and 2001's issue are pretty similar), listeners who prefer their music a little louder and more energetic are, at last, given attention! The heavier tunes are mostly centered within one disc, whereas the more mainstream pop tunes on the other. This is an excellent idea, as people can have a "favorite" of the two discs based on their style. The songs flow extremely well together, and you're left with the sense that much care was taken to make this an overall enjoyable, and educational experience. It's a nice feeling to be able to praise God while at the same time slapping your hands on the steering wheel!

2 out of 5 stars umm................2003-01-16

I think this cd was kindof a dissapointment. Fo one thing, the dc talk song there. I ean, that song is ok but it was made in 1998. And the P.O.D. song? They should hve put more rocky songs on this cd. This cd is 2001's most forgotten hits to me. I mean, they could have at least put a better P.O.D. song on it. P.O.D. is second favorite band. And whenIheard they were on it, i was s excited. Then i got really mad when i heard it. I think wow 2002 is the best ne yet. I'm not sure about 2003 because i haven't heard it yet.

4 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2002-12-26

All I can say about this cd is WOW!! Another great mix of Christian songs. You will love it!!!

2 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 The Music is OK, But............2002-10-30

I ws looking at the cover of my mom's WOW 2001, and then I looked at the track listing. Then it hit me, something is wrong here. On the front it says, "The Year's 30 Top Chrisitan Arists & Hits." If you're going to be honest, call it The 30 best CCM (emphasized) hits. The hardest it gets is POD & Earthsuit. The two from them are ulrta-calm considering the rest of the albums that they came off of.

Maybe they could sneak in "Treasure" from tree63, the 2000 Dove Rock Album of the Year winners.(its really pretty soft, though) How about something from Pillar's "Above," 2000 Hard Rock CD of the year? How about something like "Unsaid" from MXPX's "The Ever-Passing Moment."

MORE ROCK TRACKS, & THESE WILL MAKE MY WISH LIST!!!

5 out of 5 stars It was a great year for songs! One of my favorite CDs........2002-09-02

It must have been the year for Christian music. So many of these songs are classics! For a new listener to Christian music, these songs were quite palatable for me, who was use to to pop, Top 40 type songs.

I would list my favorites but there are so many. There's a mixture of pop, dance, urban, gospel, A/C, rock, latin and I think country-flavored songs.

Go for it! Buy it!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-03-18

Very limited selection of music. Not at all what I wanted or needed. There was nothing to tell what songs were on it, so I bought it without knowing. THAT was MY mistake!

5 out of 5 stars Great Records Of The Decade 70's, Vol. 1.......2006-11-06

If you love the 70's like I do this is the CD for you. It brings the past to life with the hit music of that decade. A fan of the 70's dreams come true.

5 out of 5 stars Great records...NOT but a fine CD.......2006-04-19

OK, I have offbeat tastes in music so I purchased this album as soon as I saw it. I can't believe they called it Great Records because the vast majority of people would not agree. However, I grew up listening to Melody of Love and all of these songs. Also, where else can you find the Mike Curb Congregation? I don't know if the Kelly's Hero's soundtrack is even in print anymore. Anyway, fine CD. Most of it is going on my IPOD.

5 out of 5 stars Suits Me..........2006-02-23

I think the title of the CD is a little misleading but the songs suit me. Songs like Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" didn't become huge hits because nobody liked them! Infact, that song is the reason I bought the CD. I admit it, I love the song!

3 out of 5 stars Good CD For The Money!.......2001-11-28

Yep, I bought this CD right here on Amazon, and it is quite good for its low price. I must admit that it is at least somewhat of a guilty pleasure to hear the then-sparrow (and one-hit wonder) Debby Boone singing 1977's biggest hit "You Light Up My Life" and an early '70's Wayne Newton singing the tripey "Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast." However, the reason why I purchased this CD was to have the long version of the great Exile song "Kiss You All Over", which by itself is more than worth its extremely low price.

Bottom line: sure, some of this stuff is kitschy, but if you're looking for the full-length version of the above song, then where else are you going to get it for only 6 bucks???

We've come to expect excellence from the WOW releases, which annually define the state of Christian music in the Word Entertainment world. WOW 2002 proclaims that all is well in the state and backs up the assertion with some 30 tracks. The red disc contains mostly hits tracks, while the gold disc features more adult contemporary numbers. It's nice to see Joy Williams's wonderful "Serious" single included on the red disc, as well as Nicole C. Mullen's underrated "Witness." One of the year's best singles, "All You Got" from Tait, also anchors the red disc. The gold disc's highlights include "This Day" by Steven Curtis Chapman, "We Delight" by Caedmon's Call, and Bebo Norman's "Cover Me." It's really hard to go wrong here, and if you're trying to show a skeptic that Jesus freaks can make mighty "joyful noise," this is the CD to share with them. --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars One of the best of the WOW Series........2003-11-04

Contemporary Christian music involves such a varied range of styles and mood that to offer a fair and enjoyable sampling is a tough task. In the past, the songs released on WOW anthologies have been conservative at best, profiling mostly the mainstream pop samples of the industry's top artists. With WOW 2002 (and its amazing 2001 predecessor -- which is why my review of this and 2001's issue are pretty similar), listeners who prefer their music a little louder and more energetic are, at last, given attention! Like 2001's sampling, the heavier tunes are mostly centered within one disc, whereas the more mainstream pop tunes on the other. This is an excellent idea, as people can have a "favorite" of the two discs based on their style. Overall the songs flow well together, and you're left with the sense that much care was taken to make this an overall enjoyable, and educational experience. It's a nice feeling to be able to praise God while at the same time slapping your hands on the steering wheel!

4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2003-09-05

This album is decent. i would rather listen to 2003 of Wow, since there is way more music. This is a beginning set into the world, yet there is much rock music to be notice.

5 out of 5 stars Not Wow, but Oh My Gosh 2002!.......2003-06-15

This was the first Christian CD I've ever got, and I immediately fell in love with it. It's how I came to learn about Christian artists and groups. I loved the track by Zoegirl, Elms, and Jennifer Knapp. I could listen to the whole thing for hours and not get tired of it. About 15 times better than Wow 1996 and diverse like nothing else. DEFINITELY a recommendation.

4 out of 5 stars Good for alternative Christain.......2003-03-09

this is a great cd but the songs just don't fit with me. I like more worship songs like "Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble" and songs like that. Im not into the whole christian pop and alternative. Like I said it still has some pretty good songs you may like. If your an alternative Christain fan like "Newsboys" get this but if you like more worship I recommend the cd "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever," or "Wow Worship."

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best.......2003-01-10

I used to live in a town without a contemporary Christian music station. So, since 1996, I've relied on the WoW series to find the best Christian music for me... and it's never let me down. 2002 is a great compliation of the newest, hottest Christian songs. If you're a big fan or new to the genre, pick up Wow 2002. You won't be disappointed.

Wow 2000, a 30-song collection by contemporary Christian music's top artists, is the pick of the litter thus far. Since 1996, the Wow series has wooed and won a large youth-oriented audience, with each of the yearly discs going platinum in exponentially rapid time. Strongly committed to youth issues and preserving family safety and harmony, Wow products contribute a sales percentage to charity and Wow 2000's share goes toward four antiviolence organizations. Additionally, this year's discs are encoded with software that provides Internet access while screening out objectionable content. As for the music, Moms and Dads will have no quibbles. On the purple disc, Third Day and Caedmon's Call deliver country-inflected delights, tunes from Jennifer Knapp and Plumb beg for repeat plays, while Audio Adrenaline and the O.C. Supertones pump things up. The silver disc showcases favorites Jaci Velasquez, Rebecca St. James, and Sixpence None the Richer, who contribute their hit "Breathe." --Paige La Grone

4 out of 5 stars Some outstanding tracks. . ........2002-02-11

Some of the songs on these two CD's were GREAT, but some did not appeal to me (this is just MY opinion). My favorite songs are "I Want to Know You (In the Secret)," "Stranded," "Show You Love," "Can't Live A Day," and "Friend of Mine (Columbine)". Another good song is "Waiting Room". I recommend this CD to anyone who likes good Contemporary Christian music.

4 out of 5 stars Another nice WOW album........2002-01-20

This has some really good songs on it. If you're like me and don't want to buy albums, and just get a bunch of the most popular songs for the year, then I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great! Amazing! WOW!!.......2001-04-26

The WOW selection of Christian CDs is amazing. They have compiled CDs full of the best of today's contemporary Christian artists, and have done it successfully. With WOW 2000, you get a little bit of everything. From my personal favorite, dc Talk, to Chris Rice, to Third Day, Jaci Velasquez, Audio Adrenaline, Jars Of Clay, Michael W. Smith, etc. This list goes on and on. There is even a song by The W's from the show VeggieTales called 'The Rumor Weed Song' which is obviously geared toward little children but is great for people of all ages. The WOW collections have amazed millions of adults, teens, and children all across America. You can not go wrong by buying these collections. The songs are very spiritual and uplifting and are great for anyone who is trying to start a Christian music collection or for someone who is adding to their collection. I highly recommend this CD. If you enjoy this one, try the other WOW Christian compilations. Buy this one right away, you will love it forever!

5 out of 5 stars Michael Card: 10 years of sensational music.......2007-02-13

I own every project he has put out but this is the first CD of his that I own (the rest are cassettes). His music is evokative and profound, the way he can make a cello cry like a mournful dove is simply fantastic.
I hope to increase my Michael Card CD collection in the very near future.

btw His Brother to Brother collaberation with John Michael Talbot is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars THE REAL "SUMMER OF LOVE" .......2005-03-03

MICHAEL CARD's Greatest Hits compilation was released in 1994 - one of the best years of my life. I recall hearing the song 'WHY?' for the first time in my (then) girlfriend's car, just as we were entering the eastbound I-10 onramp at Sepulveda Boulevard. Only a couple of months earlier, on April 6, while alone in an apartment in a grungy area of Los Angeles, I was quite unexpectedly driven to my knees, where Jesus Baptized me with The Holy Spirit. I didn't exactly know what had happened to me , or why - only that I was suddenly changed somehow. Obviously, that was a special year for this reviewer, and when I heard Michael Card sing, "WHY DID THEY NAIL HIS FEET AND HANDS WHEN HIS LOVE WOULD HAVE HELD HIM THERE?" it perfectly described the Fire I felt inside me, and the Love that I knew Jesus has for us! I asked my girlfriend to replay that song several times. For me, that remains one of the greatest lines ever written about my Savior King. And although I don't play it often, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' always takes me back to that magical year of rebirth.

Michael Card does not have a particularly great voice, but it adequately conveys the obviously heartfelt convictions of his nicely crafted Gospel songs. What makes Card special is his lyrics; he is Christian Rock's premier wordsmith, able to create songs around deep theological concepts. He overreaches at times ("...the universe fell from His Fingertips."; "...He sent His only Son and so became a Holy Embryo."), but that's the cost of creating fresh, unique expressions, and attempting to translate the Mystery into song. There may be an occasional misstep, but there's no doggerel verse here - just first class Christian poetry sung with sincerity, and sometimes backed by surprisingly powerful "electric" passion ('Known By The Scars', 'Scandalon', 'So Many Books', and my favorite track, 'Know You In The Now.') I'm rarely impressed by the lyrics of most songwriters, but consider these lines :

HE CANNOT LOVE MORE, AND WILL NOT LOVE LESS

WE IN OUR WEAKNESS BELIEVED WE WERE STRONG / HE BECAME HELPLESS TO SHOW WE WERE WRONG...
FOR THE POWER OF PARADOX OPENS YOUR EYES / AND BLINDS THOSE WHO SAY THEY CAN SEE

THAT IS THE MYSTERY, MORE THAN YOU CAN SEE / GIVE UP YOUR PONDERING AND FALL DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
NO FICTION AS FANTASTIC AND WILD / A MOTHER MADE BY HER OWN CHILD

TO HEAR WITH MY HEART, TO SEE WITH MY SOUL / TO BE GUIDED BY A HAND I CANNOT HOLD
TO TRUST IN A WAY THAT I CANNOT SEE / THAT'S WHAT FAITH MUST BE

THERE IS A JOY IN THE JOURNEY, THERE'S A LIGHT WE CAN LOVE ON THE WAY
THERE IS A WONDER AND WILDNESS TO LIFE, AND FREEDOM FOR THOSE WHO OBEY

TO BE SO COMPLETELY GUILTY, GIVEN OVER TO DESPAIR
TO LOOK INTO YOUR JUDGE'S FACE AND SEE A SAVIOR THERE

Now THAT'S what I call "writing!" Most of these tracks are enthusiastic and catchy. If they played this stuff on Christian radio I'd tune in once in awhile.

Michael Card's, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' puts joy in my journey, and it calls to mind my personal "Summer Of Love." And when this world douses my spirit, 'JOY IN THE JOURNEY' can fan my embers into a Divine Flame again. Brothers and Sisters, I think you'll like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Theological Truths in Music Form.......2004-11-22

Music is powerful. The Bible makes this clear. Within the heart of man is a desire to release their emotions, affections, dreams, concerns, even theological truths in musical form. The Psalms (literally "praises") were written with all forms of human emotions but contained truths focused on God's Word (Psalm 119 is a prime example).

Today, however, it seems Christian music has lost its theological focus. Its now more bent on experience or a "personal relationship with Jesus." Songs taken from the Scriptures and the truth therein is found mainly in some praise & worship artists and Michael Card. Card is a theologian who happens to play guitar. His love and passion for the Scriptures flows in his songs. From El Shaddai to The Final Word, Card takes deep theological truths and put them to music.

There is a silent revolution taking place in Christian music. The likes of Keith Green, Steve Camp, John Fisher, and Michael Card is not lost. God is reviving musicians who desire to glorify God alone! And I'm happy to endorse this album as an example of that revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!.......2002-10-11

Michael Card is a pure muscial genius. What's better is he has decided to devote his gift to Christ. I have listened to practically all Christian artists and Michael Card is the King. Without any doubt. If you don't own this man's album, shame on you. Each of his songs are so deep, thoughtful, and annoited. My dad always says he could preach a sermon on each of Card's songs. I agree. His best includes: Scandalon, Starkindler, Known By the Scars, Know You in the Now, How Long, The Dragon, Into the Mystery, Celebrate the Child, The Final Word, God's Own Fool, Why?, Joy In the Journey, Salvation, Jubilee, You are Worthy, Soul Anchor, and many more. I can't say enough about this man and his music. BUY THIS CD!

The newest in the Wow series of contemporary Christian music is as slick-sounding and solid as its successful predecessors. The two-disc set begins with a solid alterna-anthem (DC Talk's plaintively overwrought but super-catchy "Into Jesus") and ends with a kiss (Fernando Ortega's inspiring, Nashville-tinged "Lord of the Eternity"). The compilation's 33 tracks really do run the gamut: the polished, pure pop of Avalon and Point of Grace; Christian swing music; the atmospheric, spiritual sounds of Maire Brennan and Jaci Velasquez; the spirited belting of rocker Jennifer Knapp; a dance-pop act from the U.K.; the veteran confessional singer-songwriter folk of Amy Grant; Christian ska; and the late Rich Mullins's moving, visionary gospel-folk. CCM stalwarts and newcomers alike will be pleased by this release. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best WoW CD up to that Time!.......2005-04-08

I have been a big customer of this CD series. I have bought every one of them from 1996-2005. The first few CDs in the series were not that great, because they would have a few contemporary christian songs and then they had a whole bus load of the crummy Gospel music. However, the WoW 1999 was the first year where they really said o.k. lets lose the gospel and stick to the contemporary rock/pop/alternative/rap Christian music. This set includes Third Days wonderful song "Agnus Dei" originally recorded by Michael W. Smith, Third Day takes it into a new genre Rock. Then there is The W's The Devil is Bad a hip swing tune about the temptation of the devil in our lives. Then we have one of the first appearances of Nichole Nordeman and Jeniffer Knapp.

To tell you the truth, if the company who puts out this series had not put this album out, I would not have bought another WoW CD simply because Gospel is not my kind of Music. However, because this CD was released I have continued buying into this franchise and I have been very pleased with every album since. Thank you for reading my review!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Better Wow's.......2005-03-03

This is one of the best Wow's ever made. It is such a random compilation that it actually works. There were some great bands back then. Three of my favorites Christian Artists, Smalltown Poets, Newsboys, and dc Talk all make an appearance on this stellar album.

4 out of 5 stars A Great WOW for your collection.......2004-03-07

The only reason this album doesn't get 4 stars, is the inclusion of a few songs that I didn't feel mixed well into the collection. Namely, "His Cheeseburger." Don't get me wrong, the Veggietales are great, but the song on its own doesn't make much sense without the video.

However, the album is terrific regardless. It features one song that I am surprised didn't get more airplay "Strollin' on the Water". A very unique sound, that really resonates the longing to take those leaps of faith with Christ. To be fearless for God.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The WOW Ever.......2002-08-23

This is by far the number one WOW cd of all times. Its got some of the best bands ever on it, like the Newsboys,DC Talk(Before they broke up), Smalltown Poets, Jars of Clay, and Supertones. What a combination! The WOW cds are a great alternative to burning cds. Why do you burn cds? so that you can get all of your favorite songs on one cd. WOW allready has most of my favorite songs on it. So I can legally listen to them. What a great idea!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT First tape............2001-07-24

I absolutly love the first tape/c.d. in this set, the songs are well aranged to compliment and contrast each other. It's uplifting to listen to, and I never hit the skip button. However....the second tape, I don't like at all, and never even listen to anymore, I don't think the songs sound good together, and I just don't think they're as good as the first tape. But, in the end, I'd have to say that the first tape is worth paying for the full set.

As with its extremely successful predecessors, WOW 1998 gathers a selection of the most popular songs by the hottest artists gracing contemporary Christian music that year. The two-disc set has one disc of sacred pop music (the red CD) and one of sacred rock (the black CD). Featured are the likes of Rebecca St. James, Jars of Clay, and Petra on the first; 4HIM, BeBe and CeCe, and Anointed on the second. "Difference" by Jaci Velasquez, the acoustic flavorings of Caedman's Call, and DC Talk's supremely hummable "Colored People" are standouts on the red disc. Steven Curtis Chapman, Point of Grace, and Bryan Duncan let loose on the black disc. Each song, including relatively subdued turns by Sandi Patty and Kathy Troccoli, complements the whole, giving Christians a spiritual option to the less flexible tunes of Sunday mornings and the tried-and-true hits of yesterday's contemporary Christian music. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars One of the best WOWs of all time.......2004-03-07

The balance of musical styles is perfect. A unique variety that's very mainstream, very hip. Give this one a listen, and you'll be humming "Colored People", "Hope To Carry On", and "Missing Person" around the office all day.

5 out of 5 stars WOW 1998.......2002-08-16

I enjoy buying these double CD's because they give you a great idea of what the best Christian song's were for any particular year. I have the CD's for 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001. Invariably they have some of my favourite artists on such as Steven Curtis Chapman, Twila Paris, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith, Avalon and many more.

5 out of 5 stars My personal favorite.......2001-08-14

I have listened to many of the WOW cds and this is my personal favorite. Jars of Clay, Carmen, et. al. are just a joy to listen to. Every song on the first cd is great. I would highly recommend this cd over many of the other WOW compilations.
