After the success of their score for The Little Mermaid, the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken returned to Disney for their second fairy-tale adaptation. Sadly, it was the duo's last completed score before Ashman's untimely death at age 41. This soundtrack contains more-conventional show music than The Little Mermaid, owing in large part to Broadway stalwart Angela Lansbury and to Jerry Orbach's Yves Montand impersonation. Most of the songs here were included in the subsequent Broadway adaptation and its cast album, but this disc is superior in its studio polish and cast, which is better suited to the score. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
a true masterpiece in every sense of the word.......2007-05-10
when alan menken and howard ashman put together their second disney feature i dont think that anyone could have known what a masterpiece beauty and the beast would become. the film itself was praised for its maturity and remains the only animated film in history to every be nominated for a best motion picture academy award (it deserved it instead of silence of the lambs) musically the film was magnificient as well. it was adapted into a full length broadway musical three years later. but this original piece will forever remain the benchmark for all other animated works and their music.
alan menken's hauntingly beautiful score is a true masterpiece. the musical scores for the west wing and the beast lets belle go are moving and powerful. the emotional level that every piece reaches is amazing and menken absolutely deserved this oscar for best score. this is not only his best score, but quite possibly one of the greatest musical scores in history.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs are all quite powerfull and fun with a definate broadway, its no wonder that it was so seamlessly turned into a broadway musical.
BELLE - this is the strongest opening to ever appear in a disney film. the broadway feel makes it a great way to kick off the film it is both fun and quirky but definately contains a more serous undertone. this was originally suppossed to be shortened down, but luckilly it was left intact. paige o'hara as belle is nothing short of amazing.
5 out of 5
BELLE (REPRISE) - this is short but is very strong due again to o'hara's vocals. her vocals paired with ashman's stirring lyrics of longing make this short but definately a winner.
5 out of 5
GASTON - this is a fun song that is both witty and darkly clever. ashman's lyrics and richard white's performance as gaston carry this song. it may be the weakest of the piece, but it's still fun and catchy and shouldn't be missed
3 out of 5
GASTON (REPRISE) - this is really just an extention of the song listed above, but this one is much more twistidly clever and is actually stronger that the first song.
3 out of 5
BE OUR GUEST - this is one of the most famous songs from the soundtrack and its obveous why after just one listen. jerry orbach and angela landsburry both give great performances that along with menken's french-influenced score and ashman's fun clever lyrics make this song sound fun and fresh. its a great song that really does epitimize the fun of the piece and of ashman's lyrics.
5 out of 5
SOMETHING THERE - this is a short little song but it is the first hint at belle and the beast as lovers. o'hara and robby benson both give great but short performances. orbach, lansbury and david ogden stiers also give fun performances as the objects. this is beautiful and romanticly sweet little song.
5 out of 5
HUMAN AGAIN - this wasn't included in the original theatrical film (why i dont know) this is a great song that is fun and brilliant. ashman yet again outdoes himself with great lyrics and again the household objects give dynamic performances. im so glad that this is back for the special edition since its a real gem that shouldn't be missed.
5 out of 5
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - this is the most famous song from the movie and it won the oscar for best original song. just one listen shows why. lansbury gives a beautifully moving performance as mrs potts singing this. this is of course the song that shows the beast and belle as lovers and it does so perfectly. this song never dumbs things down it goes for the full romantic punch. well done
5 out of 5
THE MOB SONG - this is possibly the cleverest piece. the use of shakespearean lyrics make this a twisted and dark piece that effectively shows human nature that still rings true today. this is an overlooked but strong song that again is lifted by white's performance as the now sinister gaston.
5 out of 5
the best part of all these songs is how none of them dumb down the romance or more "adult" themes for the kiddies. this film allows itself to be fully romantic and that's why it has been so praised and lived on in such a flattering light. the near-perfect music not only aided this, but were a crucial part of this maturity.
SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5
as i said earlier, this is one the greatest film scores of all times. it may not be as recognizable or memorable as say star wars or gone with the wind, but the emotional punch that it makes elevates it far past these other two scores. menken truly outdid himself and ashman's lyrics work perfectly. the performances from all the performers are dynamic, fun, powerful, and intense. everythign works perfectly here and truly makes for an experience that is truly magical.
Great Disney CD: For Children of all ages.......2007-02-19
I really enjoyed this CD. IT is the soundtrack for Beauty and the Beast.
I especially enjoyed " BE our Guest". This is an all around excellent Disney CD with lots of vocals, and intrigue. The singers are very talented, and well re-hearsed. I love this CD. It's worth the money. Go and buy it!!!

The Story Captured Through Song........2006-09-29
Disney's revival as a major animation studio began in 1989 with the release of THE LITTLE MERMAID and reached its pinnacle with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the only animated film ever nominated for a Best Picture Oscar). As much as the film is a visual delight, its also a musical feast for the ears. People had said for over a decade that the musical movie was dead, but BEAUTY AND THE BEAST proved otherwise and paved the way for later big-screen adaptations of famous stage musicals. Some of my favorite songs on the album include:
"Be Our Guest"--this song revived the huge dance numbers that were once commonplace in movie musicals.
"Something There"--BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a love story and though that love is often brought to mind by the title song, it is this number that truly captures the essence of what happens between Belle and Beast.
"The Mob Song"--out of all the songs on the album, this is the one with the most masculine appeal. It's a song about burning down castles and killing an unfamiliar creature that poses no threat. There's nothing like a dash of good old violence to get the blood flowing.
This is a great soundtrack for any Disney fan, any patron of musicals, and people who love the film.
My children listen to this CD over and over.......2006-08-25
My kids (5 year old boy and 2 year old girl) LOVE this soundtrack. They make me play it repeatedly in the car, EVERYTIME we go anywhere. It is word-for-word an exact replication of the movie. I highly recommend it for any Beauty and the Beast fan.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Another classy release.......2006-01-26
This isn't quite the equal of Rafferty's previous album - 'North and South', but it's pretty close. Gone are the lengthy instrumental introductions that characterised that album, which makes for a more instantly accessible album, although it compensates by being much darker in tone, for this, folks, is Rafferty's divorce album. (In that wonderful sub-genre it's only real rival for title of 'best-ever' is Paul Simon's 'Hearts And Bones')
Virtually all of the songs deal with the feelings of loss and betrayal that accompany most such proceedings, and Gerry is alternatively regretful ('I Could Be Wrong', 'Love and Affection'), reflective ('It's Easy To Talk', 'Hang On') angry (the cover of 'Get out Of My Life Woman') and downright bitter ('Does He Know What He's Taken On?') before pulling himself out of his despair and promising to move forward in 'Life Goes On'. Later albums reveal him to be happier than ever, the knowledge of which makes this an easier album to listen to than it might have been otherwise. In any case it won't fail to move you, and his gifts for melody and lyricism are capable of carrying just about any subject he cares to tackle.
I find it difficult to be critical of any non-compilation by Rafferty, but this one has to rank up there with his very best. Don't miss it for anything.
Don't Judge a book by its cover.......2003-05-09
Another fine album by Gerry. Alot of fine tracks including Don't Give up on Me, The Light of love, Its Easy to talk, and Times Caught up on you. Those songs alone are worth the money.
Praise for Gerry Rafferty........2001-03-10
Few artists have the Depth and songwriting skill as Gerry Rafferty. Sooths and saturates the Heart and Mind with quality sounds that reflect what is purposeful in life and love. "On a Wing & a Prayer" delivers what is expected and then some from Gerry. "The Light of Love" is a captivating instrumental and Lyricaly strong song that I consider a True Ballad to the Core. "Love and Affection" is much the same. The Back Ground string arrangment on these two songs delight me as I sit back entranced with how it affects me emotionaly. "I See Red" is another favorite. Covered very well by "Clannad", I may not fully understand The lyrics to this song, but that is exactly what keeps me coming back to all of Gerrys songs. Like a missing peice to a story, you will find if you collect all of Gerrys Music as I have, It all fits so perfectly. Each Cd blends into one another and sets its timelesness into play. Other Favorites on this CD are, "I Could Be Wrong","It's Easy to Talk". I will not catagorize Gerry. He Obviously Stands alone in my book and Highly Underrated as an artist and a Talent that Must be heard by all who Cherish Singer Songwriters. So go ahead and Buy this Cd. You have come this far to Read about him, but to fully know what I am talking about, Buy all of his music that you can. Other Cd Must haves from Gerry are "City to City", "North and South" and "Over My Head". If you Loved "Baker Street" and "Right Down the Line", Trust me, Gerry is No Two Hit Wonder. As with most artists, Most of their best songs are Not songs you would hear on the Radio.

Product Description
Two Time GRAMMY winning guitarist Laurence Juber offers up 13 acoustic instrumental guitar versions of post Beatles McCartney compositions on "One Wing"...a logical follow up to his best selling "LJ Plays The Beatles" cd which was named the 10th all time Acoustic Guitar recording in a recent poll by Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!.......2006-07-28
I dont have time to write a detailed review at the moment but this CD is fantastic! As good or better than LJ's Beatles CD.
LJ Revisits Wings and Strikes Gold.......2005-09-21
Laurence Juber is one of the finest guitar players around and his instrumental guitar albums have been the focus of his career for more than two decades. Yet, it's the few years he spent as lead guitarist for Paul McCartney & Wings that he's probably best know for. A visit with Sir Paul was the catalist for this album. When LJ presented him with a copy of "LJ Plays The Beatles" (2000), Paul asked, "What about Wings?" This collection of some of the best of the Wings era McCartney tunes features breathtaking arrangements taken from LJ's time as part of Wings and his unmatched talent on the acoustic guitar. Writing great melodies may have been one of Paul McCartney's strongest abilities and this album by Laurence Juber brings them right to the front in a way that only he can do.
Definitely get this CD!!.......2005-07-14
If you are a fan of any of the music of Wings, or a fan of fingerstyle guitar, or heck, if you just love music, this CD is a must have! How this man pulls off these songs is unbelieveable! The arrangements are beautiful! You will find yourself singing along in your mind with every number! Mr. Juber is an incredible player! There are not enough superlatives to describe how awesome this disc is!
Maybe I'm Amazed....but not really, since it's Laurence Juber........2005-07-01
I first heard Laurence Juber on the brilliant, Grammy award winning "Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar" CD. His solo guitar version of "The Pink Panther Theme" opened the album and was stunning. I was intrigued and then thrilled to discover Juber's classic "LJ Plays the Beatles" album which competely lived up to its 5 star reviews. Well, Juber fans...get ready for his latest endeavor - "One Wing" - it will blow you away! "One Wing" is Mr. Juber's acoustic guitar tribute to his former band leader, Sir Paul McCartney, and is perhaps even tops "LJ Plays the Beatles" for sheer virtuosity and "Wow - I don't believe he can do that!" moments. "My Love" and "Maybe I'm Amazed" are absolutely lovely..."Another Day" is truly magnificant (and a song I hadn't thought about in a very long time....what a great reminder!). But get ready for "Jet" - LJ rocks hard on this one and again, how he pulls off what sounds like a group effort as a solo guitarist (with no overdubs!!) on "Band on the Run" is unbelievable.
Beatles fans.....McCartney fans...guitar fans....music fans...all celebrate with "One Wing."

Customer Reviews:
Ghost in the shell series.......2007-01-09
Great tracks fromt the entire CD. I look forward to any further efforts from Kenji Kawai.
1 Star for Ghost in the Shell.......2006-02-01
What an incessently annoying score this is! There are few times where I so feverishly hated what a composer was doing to my ears. I have about 400 scores in my collection, and this one is in my top 5 most hated. Absolutely atrocious.
It's hard for me to describe the actual music in detail, because there's such little music to describe. This CD is more like one of those sound effects collection CD's you buy at the loonie store for 2 bucks. How people love it is beyond me - it's there opinion, to be sure, but I sure can't agree with it.
If you're looking for melodical music, or action music, or beautiful music, or basically interesting music of any kind, look elsewhere. This isn't a popular opinion, I know, but it's my personal feelings of hatred towards this "score". Do yourself a favour and go buy a score that will really give you some great music, like Passion of the Christ, or House of Sand and Fog, or Rabbit Proof Fence, or Requiem for a Dream. Not this thing, which couldn't carry a tune if it held it in a bucket.
cheers
KZ
Ancien Japanese and Cantonese.......2006-01-02
It's great music.you don't have to see movie to enjoy this music.even I don't understand lyric still like it.Lyric of track 1,5 and 10 must be written with ancien Japanese probably around 4 or 5 century. I can pick some words but can't make sense from there. then track 11 is Cantonese of cause I don't understand but I like the song.Talk about track 11, English title is never presented anywhere on CD or liner note. All I get from liner note is lyric writing by Pong Canck Man, sing by 15 years old girl Fang Ka Wing, how Kawai struggle to find right person to sing and all these happen because Oshii wants short Cantonese song. but when I play this CD with my computer while connecting internet, media player shows track 11 title as " See you eveyday " I could be wrong but that must be the English translasion.
bonus track? not quite..........2003-11-20
For those of you who are still clueless as to why track 11 was included in the soundtrack, go watch the movie again. If you listen carefully you can hear the song playing in the background during the chase scene in the market place. FYI, the song's in "cantonese" not japanese.
Great.......2003-10-08
I loved this... although the Track (11) is titled wrong. The real title is 11 - "Complex Universe."

Praise God!!! I loved it!!!.......2005-01-25
I really enjoyed this CD. My favorite songs were DEFINITELY God Be Praised and Manifest!!!! Manifest brought tears to my eyes. Through this song God gave me an AWESOME vision for my wedding!!I'm actually using both songs! My fiancee' and I loved the songs and had to use them. Manifest has such a powerful message, you have to hear it. I would definitely recommend buying this CD. I bought 2 of them so that I could sow into someone else's life who may need some type of yoke broken.
Saved College Student Loves It!!.......2004-04-30
This is an awesome CD. I absolutely love it! Tears come to my eyes during all the songs, but Manifest and His Mercy Endureth esp. TD Jakes and his awesome choir has done it again!
not better than WTAL CD.......2004-02-21
But I still give it 4 stars it has some good songs to offer but not as captivating and moving as the previous CD. path in the sea is by far my favorite song of all!
Loved it.......2003-08-05
Once again, Bishop Jakes gives us a solid release. God is using this man in an awesome way to spread His message. God bless and keep you Bishop Jakes and the Potter's House.
Very Solid - Immaculate.......2003-07-06
I was so helped by this CD. I was at first hesistant to buy the CD because every time you think about mega-churches and mega-pastors, T.D. Jakes and Potter's House is the most commonly known name. But instead I bought it because the first CD was good, and the second CD was really good, but nothing could prepare me for the third. The CD starts with "The Lord's Prayer", and it is a good intro track, because it shows Bond's creativity and adaptiveness to today's culture. And let me just first give some props to Kevin Bond, he is a great asset to this project. He has worked with Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, and the Potter's House Mass, Mississipi Mass, God's Property, and many others to name, and he makes all the projects sound so individual. He is like the TrackMaster or The Neptunes of Gospel, he does his thang well! Often times, we forget about the songs that brought us over, and contemporary adaptation to the scripture was very well done.
"My Life is Available" was good, it is more of a praise and worship song to get service started. However, Potter's House Mass blew me away on "God Be Praised"- they are versatile! It is an anthem, and I like it because nobody really does anthems any more, and if they do them, it doesn't sound right. This was definitely an exception... it is fabulous- and choir directors- get this one in your spirit, because I promise if a few of us get it started, it will flow throughout the nation kinda like Total Praise did. Then "A Path In the Sea" was pretty good, it had that gospel flava, and I like it because the words mean a lot... "walk on water, stand up boldly, don't let your fear have its way. he already knew how he'd see you through, god will reveal a path in the sea." OKAY-- now track #5 - MY FAVORITE!! "Manifest"-- ooh wee! I'm tellin' you, that song can go on forever. Whoever was the lyricist for that song, you got skills... PREGNANT POSSIBILITIES, NOW BIRTH ANEW, TRAVALING TO OBTAIN IT, FOR IT MUST COME TO PASS, I DECREE IT, DECALRE IT AN DCALL IT IN THE SPIRIT, TO BECOME WHAT GOD'S DESGINED ME TO BE! I'm telling you, that one deserves some radio time. And Brenda Whitfield-Ellis... girl you badd! She sang that song like it was written for her! I expected a little more on track six from Myron Williams, he did "Faith" with God's Property, and "When My Season Comes" on the second CD (Potter's House Mass", but it wasn't all I expected. "Send Me to the Nations" and "Not By Power" are both upbeat contemp... VERY GOOD!
Richard Smallwood does what my momma would call, stuck his foot in it! Track 8 - "His Mercy Endureth" It only has a few words, but he did it! The song is written to perfection. It is as good as "Total Praise", and the harmonies are SICK! It amazes me everytime he puts himself out there and writes like this. I want the sheet music to it! "It's Already Done" was good, its different, but it has a nice little groove! And if you are a fan of Chicago Mass, with the upbeat gospel shuffle - let's-go-to-church-stomp-and-clap songs, you'll like "On A Wing and a Prayer"!
Overall this project was well worth the effort. I encourage anyone to buy this. There is some good choir music here, and you will play it over and over again.

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12
This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

recordingto a disapointment.......2003-01-29
the notes have been compressed, so if you have a real stereo not some sony out of the box system you wiil be disapointed. all low notes are gone and the brass has a tin quality.
great score.......2002-07-12
whether or not you liked the movie, this score is unforgettable... great for theatrical use...
I loved the fanfare in this one...
Could have been better........2001-07-11
I bought this CD on the theme that accompanied the movie. The first track is a classic as far as music with a hook. It is that good. Now the rest was a disappointment. While I enjoyed most tracks they seemed like a rehash of Stargate and Independence Day. The biggest turn-off was the electronic music in tracks 10 and 11. What were they thinking? And just who is Kevin Kiner? Most of the music sounded like that of David Arnold without the newness or individuality. Kevin has good basic orchestral skills but needs work in matching the music with the emotions of the movie. And please, Kevin, lay off of the electric guitar. All in all I give it 3 stars.
Thoughts From A Wing Commander Fan!.......2000-11-21
Hi! I reckon this soundtrack rocks! I have been a fan of Wing Commander since I can remember, so it is great to hear music appropriate for that universe. I have seen the film and currently own it on video, it is great, but the music is way better! However, the CD is too short and is missing some vital cues, such as the torpedo battle with the Kilrathi half-way through the film. I noticed this music while watching the movie and was a little annoyed when I discovered it was not included on the CD, however it still rocks so YAY!
Exciting work.......2000-07-06
Although the film was lackluster, the score was exciting and emphasizes the war themes of the film.

This trio of recent works by Salonen suggests that he's one of the most interesting composers on today's scene. All three share the virtues of his highly individual style, modernistic and accessible. Foreign Bodies is in three parts and is concerned with the unity of music and the body. It opens with a machine-tooled movement of driving rhythms and color-drenched orchestration. The second is more relaxed, with subtle washes of color, and the finale, titled "Dance," returns to rhythm as a motivating force, albeit with a fascinating twittering woodwind-led climax. Wing on Wing's title derives from a sailing term but also might describe the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, home of the city's Philharmonic, for which it was written. It's an adventurous work featuring a pair of coloratura sopranos singing wordlessly, human instruments part of an orchestral fabric that also incorporates a manipulated tape of architect Frank Gehry's voice and another of a fish whose call is seamlessly incorporated into the texture. Insomnia begins with a brief dreamlike passage, the bulk of the piece a succession of restless, often obsessive episodes; some threatening, others frantically joyful, but always constantly engrossing and punctuated by virtuoso solos from the orchestra. A fascinating disc that should be heard. --Dan Davis

Wing on Wing Doesn't Fly.......2007-06-27
Recently Esa Pekka Salonen was here in New York City. He was charismatic, forceful and literally made the music soar at Alice Tully Hall. I quickly bought this CD and another of his and sat down to enjoy the music.
The music on this CD, however, was not to my liking. It was a little too modern for me and I tried listening to it again the next day but came away with the same feeling.
I also think that the sound was tinny and while there was nothing wrong with the disc the orchestra did not sound complete despite Salonen's solid direction.
I'm glad I have it in my collection but it's not for everyone and unfortunately I'm one of those persons.
This is absolutely great music........2006-01-08
I'm no expert in Esa-Pekka Salonen and his compositional style, but this is absolutely great music. I love his vivid orchestration and different musical colors he utilizes in each of the pieces. And unlike the radical, atonal music of French conductor-composer Pierre Boulez, Salonen's music is relatively more accesible in terms of sonority (I've heard pieces by other extreme composers like Schoenberg and Penderecki, okay?).
To a beginner of contemporary Classical Music, it may take time, but for the experienced, one should never hesitate to buy the album. The music is simply dazzling, if not wierd or even psychedelic. "Wing on Wing", featuring two coloratura sopranos, is especially worth listening. Good way to witness "Art Music" beyond the new millenium.
Simply great!.......2005-04-04
This is a stunning issue. On this showing, Esa Pekka Salonen the composer is right up there with such living luminaries as John Adams or John Corigliano, or even outshine them, and this magnificent collection of his recent works bears that out. This is, above all, "tonality rediscovered." There are unmistakable traces of minimalism, serialism, and even atonality in every piece on this disc, but they are all powerful and lyrical by turns and highly accessible. Sibelian points of reference can also be felt, particularly in Insomnia, reminidng us that he is, after all, a Finn who learned composition from Eijojuhani Rautavaara. A major issue in every way.
Very accessible new music.......2005-03-10
I heard Salonen conduct his work "Insomnia" with the Chicago Symphony last season. It was an exciting piece, performed well, and the audience that night received it with great applause. When I saw this new recording was available I ordered it right away. After several listenings I'm even more impressed with Salonen's compositional skills. All three works on this CD are impressive. The pieces are accessible and highly listenable. They challenge you to meet the composer in his world of sound. The best new music has a sense of purpose and direction, and this music doesn't disappoint. "Wing on Wing" includes soprano vocalise as another element of color.
If you respond to this music as I have, then try his earlier CD titled "LA Variations". This CD, "Wing on Wing" is recommeded without reservation. Salonen is an important composer/conductor of our time.
Esi-Pekki's World.......2005-02-16
Invading foreign bodies, bacteria, sailing ships as architecture; it seems to me that Salonen is going Sci-Fi with his new compilation of his latest works. And so maybe it is not a co-incidence that I feel that actually all of the pieces here, especially Wing-on-Wing, sound like classical versions of the music of a Jean-Michel Jarre playing to a movietheme...
Having said that, I find this music very very attractive, at times a bit nervous, yet always innovative and interesting, especially in terms of orchestration and color. Salonen is a master of orchestration. Wing-on-Wing is a true highlight to me, and can stand right side by side with his earlier opus magnum, LA Variations. Especially the two sopranos shine, and the 'duets' they perform against the orchestra are truly stunning.
Highly recommended.
PS: When does he make his next recording with the LA Phil?
