      The mark of a great children's album is how likely it is parents will listen to it when the kids aren't around - or at least how likely it is that you won't resent the music sticking in your head for days. My daughter was loaned a Sesame Street dance video recently and I had to return it since its songs wrapped around my brain and wouldn't let go.

      The Zucchini Brothers helped me break free from obnoxious kids songs with their album In Your Garden, particularly the danceable tune "Shoe B" and their reggae track "People Reggae." The band is The Grateful Dead ("Warm Fuzzy Feeling") meets The Beastie Boys ("You Are What You Eat"). They have the energy and creativity of the Sesame Street gang ("Fruit Song") with the pop appeal of a Saturday morning cartoon.

      The album has environmental and health messages, and those agendas are expressed really creatively at a child's understanding level without sounding preachy, sappy or corny. Here's a slice of "Bad Pollution":

      Well, I walked outside my house today
      And what did I spy?
      A big pile of garbage ten feet high
      I couldn't smell the flowers
      I couldn't find the trees
      I couldn't hear the birds
      I couldn't see the bees


      Maybe I've been listening to too many crunchy folk songs aimed to teach children about the plight of animals and otherwise how awful the world is. They often miss the mark by boring a child and really not speaking to them. The Zucchini Brothers grab a child by the hand and mesmerize them with musical variety and wacky vocal intonations - while teaching a thing or two about how to do good on this earth.

      Many of the songs are admonishments: share your toys, brush your teeth, just be you, mind your manners, pick up your trash. I like the idea of my children singing songs about sharing, but The Zucchini Brothers' creative minds could come up with some great stories a la They Might Be Giants kids music. Again, I don't hear a preachy tone - they're way too fun for that. I just miss story content on the album.

      Perhaps most important to the vegetarian audience is that the album mentions meat and dairy in a few of the songs. My family edits children's stories about food since we're vegan and animal products simply aren't part of our vocabulary - but I find myself somehow not minding the carnivorous references on In Your Garden. I just sing over them and my two-year-old hasn't noticed yet. She's too busy shaken' her groove thang.

      Bottom line on this album: It got our house dancing and singing. In spite of their meat and dairy references, The Zucchini Brothers have a very positive vibe, eclectic collection of original songs, and fabulous, catchy lyrics.--Caity McCardell

      We love this upbeat music which is full of great lessons! We never get in the car with my 5-year-old and 3-year-old asking for The Zucchini Brothers! My 5-year-old has shared it with her Kindergarten class and now they are all fans, too! Great work!

      This is a great CD! Not cutesy, but neat, fun, good music. My kids LOVE it and so do I. The songs are full of good messages, but full of fun, too! The music reminds me of lots of different groups (the Grateful Dead, John Mellancamp, even some of the swing bands from the 40's..)

      These guys have a radio show which my kids and I have caught on the road. It's not played in Georgia yet, but we hope it will be soon! Check out their website. It's neat, too.

      This is such a great CD! Finally a CD that parents can enjoy as much as the children. My children just love singing along and dancing to the Zucchini Brothers! If you have children, it's a "must have" CD.
