I first heard "Butterfly Kisses" in the car with my mom. i was about 7 or 8. i am now 13 and this song still has the power to draw tears to my eyes. Bob Carlise is a wonderful singer to begin with and his songs are very powerful. I WOULD MOST STROGLY ADVISE YOU TO BUY THIS CD. I guarunte it will touch you.

5 out of 5 stars Butterfly Kisses (Shades Of Grace).......2005-04-03

I was driving when I first heard the song Butterfly Kisses as a father of a beautiful daughter the tears rolled down my cheers in a way that no other song has. I went an brought the album as soon as i could found a music shop. Seven years later the songs still sound fresh and every time I hear Butterfly Kisses my heart beats a little faster and it reminds of how lucky I am to have a beautiful little girl. I also take every little kiss that she gives me and keep it my heart.

4 out of 5 stars The Strength of this Collection is the Lyrics.......2004-07-25

When Bob Carlisle's album, "Butterfly Kisses (Shades of Grace)" went toward the top of the charts in 1997 - it was a major surprise. This Christian Contemporary album came out of left field to generate some significant sales. Much of the success of this album was propelled by the title song "Butterfly Kisses". Carlisle puts together a nice album of some Christian tunes with some very good songwriting that was a refreshing change from the ever dominant "alternative music" landscape.

Out of the gate, I think it is some powerful songwriting that gives the strength to this album. To be objective here, Bob Carlisle is a nice vocalist, but I don't think he does much to distinguish himself as a great vocalist. He is good enough to carry out the lyrics that he wrote - and that's good enough for this collection. Carlisle's work does show a nice amount of diversity in the instrumentals that inject some nice moments into what could have been an ballads album. While this is a nice effort and certainly the collection has its moments where it justifies why it was able to make a print on the 1997 music landscape - I still wouldn't go as far as to say this is a Hall of Fame album.

The title track, "Butterfly Kisses" tells the story of a father's relationship with his daughter. This song was the most successful and has probably made a permament mark in terms of being a song that will be a staple at weddings and Sweet 16 parties. This is a song that really makes use of metaphors (i.e. 'to perfume and makeup from ribbons and curls"). "Butterfly Kisses" is included as the first and last song and there are some suttle differences between the two versions (the latter is a 'live' version). One of these differences is when "All the precious time..." is sung about 3:15 into the song, you will hear stronger percussion on the later 'live' version of the song. Carlisle has definitely rode the wave with the success of this song. He has used the title song on 2 other albums. In fact, this album was originally released as "Shades of Grace". As the song "Butterfly Kisses" gained momentum, the "Shades of Grace" collection was repackaged as "Butterfly Kisses" and the order of all of the songs was reshuffled as well.

The Christian Contemporary framework on this album is present on every track of this album. There are songs on the collection that do have a late 1970's adult contemporary feel to it in terms of the sound. This is demonstrated on the tracks "You Must Have Been a Angel" and "I'm Gonna Be Ready". These two songs are two of the stronger tracks on the album as well. The later track features a great duet with Bryan Duncan - who is also a well known voice in the Christian Contemporary music scene. (I like the reference to Bob Carlisle as "Bobby C" in the song). The song "On My Way to Paradise" almost has a Michael McDonald - especially with the background vocals. "One Man Revival" and "It is Well with My Soul" are nice songs that are solid Christian Contemporary Songs - if you listen closely, you might get the feel of a (very) light carribean sound in the background of each of these songs.

The song "Man of His Word" is one of those songs that has brilliant lyrics. In this song Carlisle tells the story of a preacher and his relationship with his family over 50 years. The song discusses three periods: 1944 when the preacher met his wife, 1964 when the Vietnam War would divide the family, and 1994 when the preacher is on his deathbed. This is some very powerful stuff and shows how the strength of the lyrics can carry the song.

Finally the song, "On My Knees" is another nice song. This song does have a Gospel feel to it. It doesn't have a Gospel Chorus on it, but it could have easily had one. This is one track on the album where the lyrics don't carry it, but the music and surprisingly, Carlisle's vocals prove to be the real strength of this song.

The liner notes are solid in that the lyrics are included to all of the songs - as well as the songwriting and musician credits. As mentioned above, this album does fall short of being a "Hall of Fame" album. While I do think there is some brilliant songwriting, this is a tough album to get into for long periods of time. The things that are nice about this album are probably found on many of Christian Contemporary (or for that matter Adult Contemporary) albums. Clearly, it will be the strength of some powerful lyrics that will be what this album has to offer. It was a shame it didn't get the mainstream radio airplay to back the solid sales of this album. As a result, this is a solid album - and even if you aren't a Christian Contemporary music fan, you may find this collection enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Butterfly Kisses.......2004-01-25

Although the album Butterfly Kisses (Shades of Grace)is overall a very average CD, I give it fives stars because of Butterfly Kisses. My dad bought this CD about 3-4 years ago when I was around six years old. I am now ten years old.

Butterfly Kisses is a song about a father's love for his daughter. As it goes through the stages of his daughter's life, it shows that even when she is a teenager and the line goes, "I still love you daddy but I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time" how she still has an unconditional love for him. The piano is beautiful and I simply love the sounds of hirls and boys laughing on the playground in the beginning. All the words are beautiful in Butterfly Kisses.

I can't say I love the CD as a whole, but Butterfly Kisses is such an amazing song. Bob has an incredible voice. Note: He is more of a gospel religious singer, if you don't really go for that genre of music than maybe buy a single CD for just Butterfly Kisses. The other song I like on this CD is Must Have Been An Angel.

Buy this CD for if anything, only Butterfly Kisses. It is that much of a wonderful song.

I highly recommend Butterfly Kisses (entire cd or single cd) as a gift from a father to daughter, daughter to father, or a wedding gift. Butterfly Kisses has become me and my dad's song.

Please check out my other reviews in the games, books, and Cd's section. Thanks! And again, listen to Butterfly Kisses.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2003-07-17

Bob Carlie and his butterfly kisses tune is certanitly one the best tunes to be played at wedding's, and it was not also a " Pop" hit but also ranked high on the the Contempary Gospel charts as well. The other songs included on this CD are simply the best.

There is nothing subtle about Butterfly Kisses & Bedtime Prayers. Those given to sentimentality and open weeping at Hallmark commercials and episodes of Seventh Heaven are in for a treat from Bob Carlisle, along with several guest artists. The title cut, a ballad about Daddy's little girl on her wedding day, is sure to put a knot in your throat and a tear in your eye. The remainder of the album--a blend of modern and traditional lullabies--celebrates the joy and wonder of parenthood through pop-styled versions of "Mozart's Lullaby," "Jesus Loves Me," and "Edelweiss," along with a few Carlisle originals. Vocally, he often sounds moved nearly to tears himself, and while his mellow tones are deeper and more multifaceted, his pull-on-the-heartstrings approach is akin to that of consummate oversinger Michael Bolton. In other words, this is not a recording for everyone. But for those who believe more is more, this is perfect musical accompaniment to the overwhelming pride, love, and gratitude for one's child. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Brings tears to my eyes.......2004-02-13

This CD has become my favorite lullaby CD. The first day I got it I must of listened to the entire CD 3 times. It just makes me cry when I hear the music and look at my infant daughter knowing she is going to grow up and not be this small forever.

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2004-02-09

This is overall a great cd, but for one thing... I bought it mainly for the Butterfly Kisses song, but to my great disappointmnent the version on this cd is not the really deep and powerful one we always hear on the radio. It's much lighter and kind of wimmpy, I thought. Defintely not as good as the version I was expecting.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2003-05-09

Bob Carlisle has a beautiful voice! His song Butterfly Kisses is very touching and very beautiful. It made me think of my childhood days with my grandfather. A lot of good memories.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2005-12-13

I had bought this CD for one particular song(Father's Love), but discovered Track 1 which is a version of We Fall Down, which has since become my favourite song on the CD. Those two songs alone make this a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars A Follow Up That Does The Job And More!.......2004-03-07

Bob Carlisle never expected "Butterfly Kisses" to even make it on the "Shades Of Grace" album. In fact, Carlisle was coerced by the record label to include the sensitive ballad. Flash forward to one determined disk jockey, and the rest, as they say is history. What folks don't realize is that Bob Carlisle is and was a pioneer in Christian music. He spent most of the 1980's in a hard rock (with soul) band called Allies. Vocally, Carlisle is as strong as Paul Carrack, Michael Bolton or Lou Gramm. And with the stakes raised a notch or two thanks to "Butterfly", the follow up pressure must have been incredible.

Well, regular radio was not friendly to "Stories From The Heart". But it contains two songs that are worth the entire price of the disc. "Father's Love" is the natural choice to follow "Kisses" onto AC radio. What happened? Could be the Christian thing. I know radio and I know music and it's likely if God or Jesus appears to much in a song, programmers are probably not jumping for joy. It's sad that every format seems to cross over with ease-except Christian. Especially when the lyrics and music are so much more suitable for rides in the station wagon. "Father's Love" is a brilliant story illustrating the depth and warmth of a father's love for his children. Bob Carlisle sings with such richness and control, that no melody is safe from enhancement. Enter "We Fall Down". A chilling story of a man's quest to learn about what goes on inside a monastery. Carlisle drags the lyric like a man climbing a hill with a 1000 pounds on his back. "We fall down and get up...the saints are just the sinners who fall down and get up..." Okay, so if the chills haven't set in, or the tears flowing, then do you have a pulse? Bob Carlisle is a master craftsman. Not cheesy or pretentious. He's been in this business for a long time. And his experience and talent are never more on display then on this collection. I highly reccomend it. P.S.-the other songs aren't bad either!!!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2003-02-24

Bob has been my favorite male vocalist for along time now. This album makes him even more on the very top of the list. Soulful, Passionate, Intelligent work through out the entire project. A truly powerful album.

3 out of 5 stars No Stories To Be Told Here.......2003-02-24

Unfortunately, this album does not top Butterfly Kisses. Instrumentally, Bob Carlisle has done nothing new here. In fact, he takes the rich melody of his Butterfly Kisses album down a notch, and leaves the listener with a monotone expression of himself, and a forced attempt to reach the sentimentality of his previous album. If you already have Butterfly Kisses, then just listen to that. If you don't have it, get that album instead of this one.

5 out of 5 stars Touching Album includes Wedding Song.......2000-04-09

Bob Carlisle did it again. He managed to put out one of his best albums yet. To my surprise I found the wedding song I want to dance with my Dad in my wedding this November. I have to listen to it over and over just to keep from crying. Somehow, Bob Carlisle always sings about different relationships as if he knew them and understood them. God bless Mr. Carlisle and thank you Amazon for helping me find this album!

3 out of 5 stars Please take the time out to read this.......2006-03-13

I am a huge fan of instrumental music, but I was surprisingly unimpressed by this CD. With the exception of Track 3 (the instrumental version of "A Gentleman's Honor"), this CD was underwhelming. Other reviewers might tell you that Glass has a way different and engaging way of composing music, in actuality, Glass's music is just a huge stylistic mess.

If I had to pinpoint one thing which Glass did that I had the most agitation with, it would have to be his use of the contrasting spoken voices (to the singing voices) in the first track. It really stood out badly against the rest of the song.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Concept.......2004-09-02

Glass was so imaginative to put himself into the mindset of the 19TH century, and to perceive how shocking the introduction of photography must have been. The incessant repetitions, and long slow builds, brilliantly tie together the atonalities, and the screeching "Dorothy's flying monkeys" vocalizations. The effect creates a multiplicity of layers of imagery. It can either be a very exciting work, or an annoying one. If you're working on a sculpture or painting, it's great background. If, at the moment, life is what's happening while you're busy doing other things, it won't be your cup of tea, that day. Such duality of responses is typical of extraordinary art.

5 out of 5 stars Still life and whirling music.......2003-05-13

At first I found "The Photographer" was somewhat weak as compared to other PhGlass scores; but then-several years later-I discovered I liked it enormously!
At times it's pleasant, well-timbred (repetitive) music, and at others it plays durably on the same kind of obsessional harsh notes as "Einstein"!
The piece was designed to accompany a 'mime show' about one (not so) famous photographer. Tracks 1 and 3 are somewhat weaker ('songs'); but #2 and 4 will make you go out of your mind-whether you like them or not!
The recording is spotless as usual with the usual Philip Glass team. The 4-page booklet gives an overview of the initial staged performance. There seems to have been music for the whole length of the 3 acts: why do we have here but a (so short) selection? I can't wait to have 2 hours of "Photographer"!!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Glass.......2002-11-22

Glass has a number of CDs that are better known than this one, but The Photographer remains one of my favoriteds. It's funny, I just saw "The Hors" which has a Phil Glass score and there are great similarities between that score and this one he did almost twenty years ago. So I say don't go buy the new one but check this one out instead.

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Glass from the mid-80s.......2000-03-30

The mid-80s are a mixed-bag for Glass. While one could get wonderful pieces such as "Glassworks" and "Akhenaten", there were also these marketing-department dogs such as "Songs From Liquid Days" and "Danceworks" that were more irritating than illuminating. And while this starts off with a toss-off bit of fluff ("A Gentleman's Honor"), it soon develops into the wonderful and dramatic workout that follows. 'Act III', the final longer work here, is amazing, in fact, as it possesses a sense of drama that one doesn't always encounter in Glass's music of this period (the 'Funeral' from "Akhenaten" is another example). This work is also helped by the presence here of Glass's ensemble, which he seems to have felt more comfortable with as a compositional force than the larger forces offered by orchestras, etc, during this time. It is, though, an expanded version of the Glass Ensemble, with added brass and winds, and when this all kicks in in the final part of the work, it's one of those 'hang onto your hat' moments! One to get, even with the flaw of the "A Gentleman's Honor" toss-offs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-06-02

Last year our baby girl, 23 years old, was married in an outside ceremony and we had a live butterfly release that was truely beautiful. The father/daughter dance was at the beginning of the reception and Bob's touching song "Butterfly Kisses" was played. There was not a dry eye watching. It was wonderful and emotional. Her father and I always gave her butterfly kisses at night.

5 out of 5 stars Butterfly kisses ^ other stories.......2006-02-25

I am blown away from this album! I definetly recommend it for everyone. It is a spiritual album of totally different sounds. I was shocked at the different sounds & had to take it out of cd player to make sure it was the same cd. I have enjoyed this album so much.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant.......2002-08-17

Honsetly, I purchased this CD for my husband. Father's Day morning I popped the CD in and let him listen to Butterfly Kisses. As our daughter raced around the house in her pink tutu, we listened to the poignant words and shared a few sniffles.

A moving and uplifting cd about the things that really matter in life.

5 out of 5 stars Bob does it again.......2002-05-25

Not only does this album distill the best of Bob Carlisle's
Diadem albums - with his big hit "Butterfly Kisses" front and center but three new songs are included. One of these songs "You're Beautiful" is worth the cost of admission itself.

Unlikely anyone that I can think of, Bob Carlisle presents the position of the father in his lyrics. On almost everyone of these songs there is this reoccurring theme of fatherhood.

It is masterfully displayed in a song like "Butterfly Kisses" but it also appears in songs like "Father's Love" and
"A Man of His Word". Most profoundly however it speaks of the unconditional love a father has for his child in this new song "You're Beautiful".

Listen to this and I dare you not to get a bit emotional.

      2 out of 5 stars Instumental Only.......2002-05-03

INSTRUMENTAL!! Don't expect vocals. Other than that, it is a nice collection.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable by itself.......2000-03-30

The music is beautiful just for listening. The first CD could be used in a wedding. The 2nd CD contains instrumental versions of the songs which is soothing and peaceful; it could also be used in a wedding, but not for a reception. I did not buy this to use in a wedding - just for the music and I was not disappointed. It's a nice background for meditation, or remembering your own wedding. I just bought a second one for some friends who are getting married. And the price is right.

2 out of 5 stars Classical CD is great, but the other one is horrible........1999-11-17

The first CD is filled with popular classic wedding songs and is really good, but the last CD is music that would make your guests think they were trapped in an elevator filled with easy listening music. I cannot understand why someone would compile those songs for a wedding!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Music!.......2004-03-30

I love this album. I think that anyone who likes Bob Carlisle should check it out. I'm surprised it's not more popular. My Dad brought it home from a Promise Keepers rally that Mr. Carlisle had performed at. It's been a favorite of mine ever since. Worth listening to.

So how do you follow up a release that features the song of the year? Very soulfully, if you're Bob Carlisle, the man who made "Butterfly Kisses" the 1997 Christian song of the year. Much in the vein of Michael Bolton, Carlisle's strength lies in his brand of gritty blue-eyed soul. And it's never moved stronger than in his new release, Nothing but the Truth. In powerhouse R&B numbers such as "Lay Your Hands on Me" and "Forgiveness," Carlisle pays homage to the music of his youth and a strong exposure to Motown. There's a wonderful duet with Carlisle and Bryan Duncan, himself no vocal slouch, on the cover of "Love Is the Answer." While Carlisle's reworking of Amy Grant's "Baby Baby" seems flat, he ends the release on a rich note with the moving, deeply reflective ballad "After All" (cowritten with Randy Stonehill). --Michael Lyttle

5 out of 5 stars Another great album.......2000-11-12

Although I must admit I didn't like every single song on this album, I had to give it 5 stars because the second song, which I believe is "Lay your hands on me" made me laugh out loud. The words, "I don't need no psychoanalsyt to get to You," were really funny to me because I'm a psychologist-but as always, Carlisle is right- we certainly don't need a specialist to get to God, just Jesus. Shalom! dm.

4 out of 5 stars Bob Carlisle On Steroids.......2000-10-03

I've been a Bob Carlisle fan since I heard the first few bars of "Long Way From Paradise" back in his Allies days. He is certainly one of the most versatile vocalists in popular music (Christian OR mainstream) as he always powerfully delivers in any music style from Motown Soul/Nashville Rock numbers to tender ballads. This album, riding the wave of "Butterfly Kisses'" popularity, takes it up a notch. The arranging, engineering, and mixing is the best I've heard on any Carlisle-related album. The title track, "Nothing But The Truth," a driving and fun mixture of Latino and Blues rock, rocketed to the top of my "Wail-Along-In-The-Car" list (it's worth the price of admission all by itself), and guest vocalist Bryan Duncan's lovely tenor is always welcome. The album's remaining tracks are juiced up, but still classic Bob.

The ONLY reason I didn't rate this project 5-stars is because of the retooling of Amy Grant's lolly-pop song, "Baby-baby." (I was actually embarrassed listening to it the first time with my friends who kept saying, "You've got to be kidding". After a number of listens, I was able to catch a bit of his funky vision.) Thankfully, the rest of the album's strengths more than compensate for its one misstep.
