Awesome........2007-07-12
I love Lord Of The Ring soundtracks and this one is as good as the others. If you like the soundtracks you'll love the complete recordings. Thank you mister Shore for such a great time listening to this music.
Now waiting for The Return Of The King's Complete Recordings.
Amazing!.......2007-07-07
This is a must have for any Lord of the Rings fan or even any fan of music in general. I fell in love with the score to this beautiful trilogy and this complete set is perfect. I can't wait for the third installment!
Excellent recording and two formats.......2007-06-12
As of recent, I have starting collecting again film music and the Lord of the Rings complete recordings was a natural.
The sound quality is very good and the packaging would make any collector of Lord of the Rings memorabilia quite happy. (I am not a collector but still appreciate the packaging.)
Contained in the package are cds with the tracks which I aptly moved to my computer in lossless format and also a DVD. The DVD turns out to be the entire collection of the CDS presented in DVD format with a menu. - Nice touch.
While I can't tell the difference of quality between the CDs and the DVD, I like the DVD set up when I want music in the background while I am working away.
Overall, a terrific collection and some my be disuaded by the price but I found this to be a particularly good set of recordings and well worth the cost.
Both "Two Towers" and "the Fellowship" are available and I'll wait for the 3rd to become available later (hopefully).
Let's be clear here - quality recordings, two formats provided, nice packaging for those that need it and a little costly. I can live with the latter and enjoy the music as anticipated.

A bit pricey but well worth the coin!.......2007-04-26
Before viewing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I didn't think that anyone with great skill was composing music in the classical, romantic period style, anymore. I stand corrected! Howard Shore's music for the three LOTRs movies just blew me away. I rarely buy movie soundtracks because the soundtracks, divorced from the movie, don't stand up as well crafted pieces of music, on their own. If you have decent speakers, in your home theater set up, and a player that decodes 5.1 DVD-Audio soundtracks (I have a player that decodes both high end audio formats: SACD and DVD-A.) The sountrack on the DVD-A disk (5.1 channel, 3D sound!!), is phenominal! The use of the human voice as both a musical instrument and in songs to convey a message is something that I especially like in classical music and is iceing on the cake in Howard Shore's compositions. That he wrote music to take advantage of the vocal skills, of each individual vocalist, is one example of many where Howard Shore went the extra mile in composing his musical masterpieces for each movie.

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-06-15
I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.
Awesome.......2007-06-12
This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.
Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03
Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.
Complete?.......2007-04-07
This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.
Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03
I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

One of the most satisfying soundtrack "companion" pieces ever released, this collaboration between synthesist Wendy Carlos and producer Rachel Elkind manages to both logically extend and credibly expand on director Stanley Kubrick's masterfully conceived Clockwork Orange musical ethos. That shouldn't be surprising, as the pair was largely responsible for initiating those concepts with the music they'd begun as a follow-up to their successful, synthesizer-pioneering Switched on Bach collection. "Timesteps," a rich, wildly evocative, 13+ minute electronic sound and music collage, was based on impressions gleaned from Anthony Burgess's original novel (excerpts of it are liberally scattered throughout the film), while an abridged version of the fourth movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was an early experiment in vocal synthesis that ended up as one of the film's key motifs. Also featured here are synthesized versions of music Kubrick ultimately chose to use in orchestral form (Rossini's "The Thieving Magpie") as well as original Carlos/Elkind electronic compositions ("Orange Minuet," "Biblical Daydreams," and "Country Lane") that ended up on the cutting-room floor. Composed on primitive, monophonic analog instruments (which could play only one at a time!) long supplanted by generations of digital revolution, this work has a brooding otherworldly quality all its own. As our favorite Droog would say: "It was like a bird of rarest spun metal, or like silvery wine flowing in a space ship, gravity all nonsense now." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
A little bit misleading.......2007-05-13
I thought I was buying the complete soundtrack to the film and not just Wendy Carlo's bits. But it was ok.
Pioneering and enjoyable electronic music .......2006-09-15
I used to have this recording on LP - the cover was a marvellous collage (the new cover is slightly naff) - and it was a very fine companion to the regular A Clockwork Orange soundtrack, which featured music which didn't fit together very well outside the context of the film.
Wendy Carlos's complete score is very satisfying and it still stands up well today (2006). I think that the standout tracks on this album are 'Timesteps' and 'Country Lane', which are powerful original compositions. Both tracks display a remarkable musical imagination.
Timesteps is a freely composed fantasia which takes us from place to place in the mind of the composer. There are moments which sound like jungle music, others which sound like sentimental film music with an ocean in the background and another second with an unnaturally sweet heavenly female choir sound. It is a unique composition and quite superb. It is a pity Wendy Carlos didn't write more music as inspired as this piece - perhaps she did and I haven't heard them!?
Country Lane is also very impressive. It is a piece which demonstrates very cruel emotions very well. The use of the ancient "Dies Irae" tune, also used very effectively by Liszt and Berlioz, "vocoded" is a brilliant touch. In fact, the vocoder was used very effectively by Wendy Carlos in Timesteps, Country Land and the Fourth Movement of the 9th Symphony of Beethoven on this disc. Perhaps the first significant use of this instrument on a recording? Kraftwerk and Zap went on to use the instrument in more popular musical styles.
The choral section of the fourth movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony recorded by Wendy Carlos is strangely beautiful and beguiling. Sort of a "reification" of a dreamt interpretation of the music? Perhaps.....
The purely "instrumental" works and Classical and Classically inspired works on this album are very interesting and represent some very effective use of the synthesizer. Of course, it would be easy for many people with a computer and some other equipment to do their own electronica versions of these works today. However, Wendy Carlos had a very personal style and understanding of this music. Her version of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Brandenburg Concertos still entertain me today, even though I am really a devotee of the HIP approach to this music.
I dare say that Wendy Carlos introduced a lot of young people to the music of Beethoven and to the idea of using synthesizers. I remember reading that Phil Oakey, from The Human League, said that Wendy Carlos was a major influence on him.
'A Clockwork Orange:Wendy Carlos's Complete Original Score' Movie Soundtrack (East Side Digital).......2006-07-03
I've heard several long-time music fans boast about how this movie soundtrack is simply 'one of' THE best album releases, period!Rather they be a big-time metal head,a classic rock supporter, someone who plays easy listening material all the time, maybe an school punk fan, etc. To best describe this CD(with added bonus cuts that wouldn't fit on the original vinyl lp)I would say it's like ahead-of-it's-time new age with an experimental vibe to it.Key tracks are the unforgetable thirteen minute "Timesteps",the creative "Theme From A Clockwork Orange","William Tell Overture,Abridged" and a tune that was co-written by Carlos and movie producer Rachel Elkind "Biblical Daydreams".A must-have reissue CD of the cult masterpiece Stanley Kubrick film, that after you've seen the flick for the very first time,it MAY effect the way you look at the world from here on out.Highly recommended.
Lost pieces and extras from the gifted musician who gave A CLOCKWORK ORANGE that Moogish flavour.......2006-04-30
I own the original LP and cassette of this album ... released after the release of the "original soundtrack," this album offers the CLOCKWORK fan the "real" soundtrack. Missing are the third party tracks which Kubrick used ... included are the complete "Timesteps" which is what convinced Kubrick to hire (then) Walter Carlos to adapt the classical works for the film ... also included is the electronic rendition of "The Thieving Magpie," not finished in time for inclusion in the film ... and a piece which wasn't used, "Country Lane."
The Warner album includes an abridged excerpt of "Timesteps" (bits of it were used in the film), but the complete composition gets a deserved spotlight here. This is not a "movie soundtrack" album, but Wendy Carlos' own release of the music she prepared for the film. "Angel trumpets and devil trombones ... hear all proper now." ;)
A Bit of the Old Ludwig Van.......2005-10-21
Yes the Moogs are this album are "primitive" but their sound is vastly superior to today's synths. The Moogs were vastly more expressive and subtle. If this album were recorded on digital synths, it would just sound cheesy. Timesteps is an amazing piece that gives you the creeps even if you haven't seen the movie. As a soundtrack it perfectly mixes the themes of ultra violence and Beethoven seemlessly. If you buy this cd (and by all means do)please refer to it as "early electronica" rather than "new age". It deserves the credit for everything it helped spawn

Director Milos Forman's rewarding 1984 film adaptation of playwright Peter Shaffer's Tony-winning play won no fewer than 10 Academy Awards (including Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Director); only Wolfgang himself (and his filmic counterpart, Tom Hulce) seemed to get overlooked by the Academy. This expanded three-disc set contains all of Sir Neville Marriner's crisp, accurate readings of the excerpted Mozart symphonies, concertos, serenades, and operas (including marvelous portions of The Abduction of Seraglio, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute) used in the film. The success of Amadeus spurred a long-overdue renaissance of interest in classical music, and one would be hard-pressed to find a richer, more concise introduction to the intoxicating music and frustrating bundle of moral contradictions that was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. --Jerry McCulley

"Genius".......2007-02-02
This is a GREAT CD! It has wonderful music from the movie "Amadaeus" which is the BEST movie ever! This music is so fine that it lifts your heart into happiness when you listen to it. You can just tell immediately that this is "the voice of God". And for one man to make such wonderful music in a flash, its just pure genius.

I think it was at age 12 when I first saw Amadeus, and I remember immediately asking for a recording of the Requiem (a bit of sombre for a 12-year old I know, but just to demonstrate the impact of the piece..), but I think it wasn't until the third time that I saw the film (at age 30, if you were wondering) that something hit me; It's hard to say why only now (maturity?), since I've always loved Mozart's music and have already owned several recordings of the Requiem, Bohm's 35-41 symphonies and Arthur Grumiaux's wonderful violin concertos with the Sinfonia Concertante. But appreciating the movie as an adult was a different experience, recognizing what a fabulous work Marriner and his Academy have done by delivering so successfully what Mozart was all about. I think that the brilliance of this recording is that it succeeds in providing Mozart's essence through emphasis on the hidden gems of his music, while avoiding being another banal "Greatest Hits" compilation; and sewing together such a diverse array of pieces so gracefully into one recording is not a trivial task, but in Marriner's case it seems completely flawless - because what holds all the pieces here together is what this music is all about - grace, beauty, humor and love.
This needs to have a 10 star rating!.......2006-01-20
There are many great composers, but Wolfie's music is just incredible. There are a few of his operas that I don't care for but most of it is pure bliss to listen to. Do yourself a huge favor and purchase this CD or the gold extended version. You won't be sorry-unless you don't have any taste. In which case, there is nothing the rest of us can do to help you. But the local pharmacist might. . .
Top-Chart Album of the 80's That Made Classical Music Sell !!.......2005-07-31
In 1984, Milos Forman's film Amadeus, based on the hit Broadway play by Peter Schaffer, made it to the big screen with resounding success nationwide. When the soundtrack was released, it was a top seller and even found itself selling as much as such popular 80's artists as Madonna. The music from this well-made film, mostly Mozart but used some Classical-Era works by Salieri, Pergolesi and Salieri- hooked young people into classical music when they might have otherwise never given it a chance.
In the film, Mozart's music is used for dramatic effect and for ambiance. Vienna in the 1780's was the home of a blooming musical scene that would later see the likes of Beethoven. This musical kingdom is well captured in the soundtrack, which features tantalizing excerpts from Mozart's most illustrious works. The film opens to the frenzied, dark strains of the 1st movement of the 25th Symphony, as a crazed Salieri is taken from his home to a mental asylum after an attempted suicide. It goes on to use the religious music of Pergolesi Ave Verum and Amen - boys chorus as Salieri contemplates a life of chastity and dedication to music if God grants him talent. Then we leave Salieri's world of spirituality and desire for fame when we are introduced to the young Mozart. The Serenade for Winds "Gran Partita" is heard - an oboe, clarinets, "like a rusty squeezebox" and fills the air with sublime serenity. This coming from a composer who began his career at the age of 4 who was already trained in piano and violin, and who in his teens composed symphonies and operas. Salieri's works are no longer heard as Mozart's brilliant music takes over the score. We hear breathaking slices of his famous operas in chronologically composed order- the German opera Abduction From The Seraglio which was composed for the soprano Katerina Cavalieri (who has a fling wit Mozart and whom Salieri desired for himself), Figaro's Wedding and Finale from Le Nozze Di Figaro and the dramatic Commandatore Dinner Scene from Don Giovanni, and lastly the Queen of the Night Aria and Papageno's Aria from his enchanting and spiritual work The Magic Flute. Further to these famous works, which also include the Piano Concerto in D No. 20- which prefigured Romantic piano concertos of Beethoven flair, and the Eine Kleine Nachtmusiz which is Mozart's most famous tune and signature theme, we are treated to rare works in Mozart's ouevre. This includes the Masonic Funeral March, a funeral piece Mozart wrote for his fellow Masons. Divertimenti is heard in a latter scene in which Mozart's wife Constanza escapes her woes with Mozart and indulges in a spa. Chamber works, the heartwarming Flute concerto and even the rare Salieri opera Axur (then considered the greatest opera ever made, according to Emperor Joseph) all make up for a great recording album. This album now exists in extended form for the Bicentennial. The movie is a perfect companion to this album.
Amadeus.......2005-07-29
Any lover of Mozart or the film Amadeus, REALLY needs to have this in their collection. It has some of the most beautiful music and Academy of St. Martin in the Fields is wonderful!

Much has been made of composer Bernard Herrmann's choice to use only razor-sharp, slashing strings for his score to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. And heaven knows it works like a dream (or a nightmare), the music feeling as edgy and colorless as the noir-ish black-and-white photography. But as noticeably effective as the knife-screeching violins are in the famous shower scene (followed by those deadly blows from the basses and cellos), they work just as powerfully--though perhaps not as noticeably--all throughout the picture. Herrmann evokes dread and tension with just a few notes, or captures Janet Leigh's flighty panic in pizzicato as she hits the fateful road to the Bates Motel after impulsively stealing a large sum of money from her employer. --Jim Emerson

Herrmann's Famous Score Complete on CD.......2004-11-22
My favorite classic movie scores are Leonard Bernstein's for ON THE WATERFRONT (1954), Alfred Newman's for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (1959) - and Bernard Herrmann's for PSYCHO (1960). Herrmann composed his all-strings, "black-and-white" score at around the same time he wrote the hauntingly beautiful music for such memorable episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE as "Walking Distance" and "The Lonely." The parts of the extensive PSYCHO score that stayed with me most after seeing the movie for the first time were the "flight" theme (when Marion Crane, after having embezzled money, is fleeing in her car from the police); the "temptation" theme (heard as the camera focuses on the stolen money lying on Marion's bed); and, of course, the squealing violins of the two famous murders: Marion's (in the shower) and Detective Arbogast's (on the stairs). All of that music - and in fact, the entire movie score - is captured vividly in this 1996 recording by Joel Mc Neeley and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The recorded sound is spacious, the strings lush in the almost-Romantic "Marion" and "Marion and Sam" themes. So great is the PSYCHO score that it fully deserved this complete, modern recording. Let's hope that Mc Neeley and his orchestra record Herrmann's TWILIGHT ZONE themes, too.
Definative.......2004-04-13
Spectacular re-recording of what remains one of the most recognizable and imitated film scores of all time. As usual with McNeely and the RSNO, the performance is both electrifying and exact, and the recording is spot on. Herrmann felt that Hitchcock's black-and-white film needed an equally black-and-white score, so he removed the "color" from the orchestra by limiting his writing strictly to the string section. What he accomplished was amazing in its ability to manipulate one's primal emotions, with or without the film. From the panic-stricken opening titles, through the long passages of drawn-out suspense, to the famous murder "stings," few other scores have done so much to build and shape the overall mood and movement of a movie. This completed Herrmann's trilogy of masterpieces for Hitchcock films, the prior ones being 'Vertigo' and 'North by Northwest.' If the former was his most darkly romantic, and the latter his most light-hearted and adventurous, then this one is easily the bleakest and most relentlessly single-minded. Yet it holds up splendidly as a stand-alone piece of work, brought to life once again under McNeely's direction. I'm not usually a fan of re-recordings, but he and the RSNO seem to get Herrmann's work just right time and again. A must-own if you love film music.
AT THE TOP OF THE ART OF FILM SCORING.......2003-11-16
Can one deny that Bernard Herrmann's score to "Psycho" belongs in the top five of all-time great film scores? I think not.
Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have performed the score masterfully with every thrilling, as well as subtle, chord.
Purists may "scoff" that this rendition differs from the one conducted by Herrmann in the film, and to them I say "So what?"
This is merely one ensemble's interpretation of the work of a master as seen and played through the eyes of composer/arranger McNeely.
In other words, it's worth the money to buy and savor one's purchase!
Better than some..........2003-01-15
Varese records has produced many recordings of old movies and even a soundtrack to a book (Star Wars Shadows of the Empire). Some recordings have been hit and miss others have been excellent. This recording fall into the excellent category, the music has a great feel of the movie and the digital sound is a plus. I felt that Joel McNeely and his RSO were actually recording the music for the actual movie themselves. Great work!!
The masterpiece of mystery music.......2002-12-26
It's hard to believe they gave Bernard Herrmann a small orchestra and he worked it out to make a masterpiece in film music! The score resulted in a genious orchestration of strings and high violins that matches with Hitchcock's film in a perfect way.
Joel McNeely rerecords the score very similar to the original, and that is good since we don't have any other score available.
It must be remembered that Psycho soundtrack is much more than the infectuous music for the shower scene, anyone who has seen the mov will agree with with me. It has a great deal of fantastic mystery music, like the one used in "Temptation" or even the variations of the main theme used in the runaway cues, which create a very quick, suspenseful mood. My personal fave is "The Car", what a sound!
The score never develops to an comforting romantic cue, however "Marion and Sam" gives a lighter touch of their troubled romance.
It must be said that the "murder" themes are very similar to the original in the mov (they sound strong, and that's good) with the exception of "Discovery" part, where you'll not find the strings of the shower scene, there is instead the original music Herrmann wanted.
That's what it is-tam tam tam tam tam! That's how begins this must have score!

misunderstood?.......2007-05-27
apparently some people don't understand what this album is. it is not a soundtrack of the first two games, nor is it a "tribute" or "songs inspired by katamari" album. it is a soundtrack of the third Katamari game PLUS the songs from the first two games that were NOT INCLUDED on the first two soundtracks.
More of a tribute than a soundtrack.......2007-03-08
This cd is actually more of a tribute to the game, rather than an accurate soundtrack. If you're looking for the music from the original game, you need to go track down an album called, "Katamari Damashii Soundtrack: Katamari fortissimo Damashii". That's the cd with all the original music. It's published by Columbia (Catalog # COCX-32760). You'll know you have the right one, by the cover which resembles the original game's cover. (Cows in pasture, rainbow). I got a hold of a copy from a Hong Kong exporter.
Again, a Namco Compilation.......2006-03-02
The First CD is all the missing songs from Minna Daisuki Katamari Damashii (Everybody Loves Katamari Damacy(We Love Katamari)) and all the NEW songs from Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damashii (My My Katamari Damashii(Me and My Katamari)). I also imported the game, and the music is quite good, but getting even farther from the original Katamari Damashii (Katamari Damacy). The game itself has better music, only because of the fact they have some of the great original songs. Que Sera Sera, Lonely Rolling Star, Disco Prince, Moon and the Prince. Gooooooood stuff.
Pretty Good Soundtrack.......2006-02-19
No, it's not all of the songs from the Katamari Damacy series, it's the soundtrack for Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damacy, also known as Me and my Katamari. I have the import game and it's very good, and this soundtrack includes the new songs from that game, and some missing ones from We Love Katamari. The new songs, such as Shabadoobie, Jesus Island, and Family Damacy are VERY good and up to the usual standard of Katamari greatness. The 2nd disc of this soundtrack is a lot of classical pieces, that I suppose are found in We Love Katamari, but I should play through again to find out. If you're wanting some new Katamari songs from an excellent game, I definitely recommend this. If you really want the past soundtracks, then buy them.
ditto.......2006-02-02
Just as the other guys say this is not the songs from Katamari Damashi, and yes it should be pronounced Damashi not Damacy because Japanese people cannot pronounce the "CY" sound. After realizing these were not the songs from the game, which did not take long, I decided to give it a good listen to any ways. I did like a few of the songs Like "Katamari on the Funk" but it is not a must buy. This product is totally misleading but Ok.

I thought I had ordered the one with the actors as cats, but this was just music. i didn't discover until I had played it, and after reading your return policy on opened merchandise, I kept it because I did not want to take the loss of money in reurning it to you.
Splendid remastering with minor libretto editorial quibbles.......2007-01-01
As a devoted fan of CATS and this recording of this wonderful musical, I am very thrilled that Lord Lloyd-Webber has released this wonderfully remastered version of the recording. This review isn't about the performances, as I have sung their praises elsewhere. Rather I'd use this review to praise the remastering. The original Geffen and Polydor CDs didn't sound too good, with rather boxy sound, but this new remastering spreads out the sound much more and allows the voices to come across more vibrantly.
The packaging is a vast improvement over previous issues, as the CD booklet is lavishly illustrated with photos of the original Broadway cast. It's like a souvenir programme in itself. However, the companion libretto booklet suffers from shoddy editorial quality. There are some mistakes scattered throughout the libretto that have been there since the original Geffen release, especially some erroneous lines in the printed lyrics of Bustopher Jones and Old Deuteronomy. Also, some lyrics do not fully utilise the entire space of the booklet pages.
These quibbles aside, the music still matters and it's a treat to hear such a wonderful recording of CATS in superb, improved sound quality. Now if only 2007 will bring a remastered version of the highlights album...

A triumph!.......2006-04-04
There are no two ways about it: this album is phenomenal. I've listened to the others, but the singers on this recording are so emotional and involved, not to mention talented.
First of all, Gary Morris as Jean Valjean. He's amazing. He has a smooth voice, hits the high notes, and I just fell in love with him. Philip Quast as Javert takes my breath away. "The Confrontation" is probably my favorite song on the album; Morris and Quast are perfect together. Debbie Byrne is wonderful as Fantine, Kaho Shimada is great as Eponine; sure she has a little bit of an accent, but she has a great voice. Anthony Warlow, as Enjolras, stole the show in my opinion. His voice is unbelievable. Tracy Shayne, as Cosette, is good, but her voice is a little too sugary for me. Michael Ball is said to be the best Marius of them all, and he's good, but sometimes he's a little whiney. Great voice, though.
One thing that shocks me about a lot of the other reviews here is that Barry James and Gay Soper, as M. and Mme Thenardier, are said to be bad. In my opinion, everyone else falls far short. James and Soper actually do the accents, instead of sounding like upper-crust British actors. They're amazing.
Obviously "One Day More" is the greatest song on the album. It's amazing. I recommend this to anyone. If you're new to Les Miserables, this is the place to start. If you're a Les Mis veteran, you HAVE to hear this one.
The Best Cast.......2006-01-18
Don't listen to the Les Mis snobs that have posted before me. This cast is excellent. The personalities of the actors are distiguished much better on this version than any other and the actors seemed to sing more from the heart than on the original Broadway cast version. You get an image of these characters from just their voices without ever having to see them. This was my introduction to Les Mis so I have to admit I am probably biased. However, no other version has been able to replace this one. The main reasons are, Jean Val Jean sounds tortured, Javert sounds like he will hunt Val Jean to the ends of the earth, Marius and Cosette sound like they are in love, and the students have much more distinguished voices on this version. No matter what people say about the girl who play Eponine on this version she doesn't wimp out on the high notes like the girl on the original Broadway cast did and she has no Japanese accent. Her Japanese accent is about as noticable when she sings as a New York accent or a Boston accent when someone sings. Another thing the Les Mis snobs complain about is that this album doesn't contain the entire story of Les Mis. This isn't an audiobook, it's a highlights album. Get the story from the actual play or the book or the movies. Overall this is a great album that will last forever.
What's the point of this?.......2005-06-30
"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.
However, serious Les Mis fans also want the Complete Symphonic Recording because it does have the complete score. The Original London (OLC) and Original Broadway (OBC) Cast albums only have selected songs. I have all 4 major full-length English-language versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses. But the main advantages of the CSR are its completeness and Andy Warlow (a truly stirring Enjorlas). Also, on the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions). Beyond these fine performers, the CSR has a rather weak cast in general. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. "Who am I?" isn't so bad, but "Bring Him Home" makes me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button. One of the few advantages of this trimmed down version is that we are spared Morris singing "What have I done?" He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Finale". Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is also OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is really irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.
The bottom line is that cutting it down to one CD eliminates the major advantage of the CSR. If you just want nice performances of the major songs cheap, get the OLC version or the OBC Highlights
What Got Me Hooked On Les Miz.......2005-04-05
This C.D. is what started it for me with my Les Miserable passion and it will for you too if you choose to buy this Les Miserable C.D!
I love this musical with all my heart and I know most of the words to every song. Les Miserables isn't a common musical it really has whole differant life- the lyrics are all what we can relate to and the themes of love, loss, and trying to better ourselves are all things we have expierenced as human beings. This musical does more than live up to Hugo's book on many ways it outshines in the lyrical sense. If given the chance I would see it everyday and I hope that someday Les Mis will visit my city so I do get the chance too.
Gary Morris isn't as good as Colm Wilkinson- but, Gary's great anyway and the rest of the cast is star pick of the litter- including one of my favorite singers of all-time Michael Ball- who is just as attractive as Ellijah Wood with a singing voice that matches Josh Groban.
All in all with a wonderfully written composed music and good direction it's understandable why this musical has been translated into ten differant languages and has swept the world literally-even in countries that don't usually support or like musical theater.
I only have one suggestion if you haven't read or seen a movie about Les Miserables you should probably buy the complete version it will be easier to understand than this Les Miz greatest hits C.D. All in all no matter what kind of music fan you are you have to have some kind of copy of Les Miz in your collection!
Great Highlights Album!.......2003-03-12
I think the cast on this album is great. I loved Gary Morris as Valjean. Colm Wilkinson's singing, from what I've heard, is not as smooth as Gary Morris's, and I feel like his high notes are far more forced. The choppy quality of Wilkinson's singing also really gets to me.
I had no problems with the Fantine on this album, and although everyone seems to be complaining about Kaho Shimada's Japanese accent, I couldn't hear it. She sounded really clear and a little too girlish for my taste, but hey. Eponine's a young character. As others have commented, Javert and Marius were great. I also really enjoyed the singing of Anthony Warlow as Enjolras.
Additionally, I thought the selection of songs was really great. I'm not sure why people seem to want the album to project the full story of Les Mis. People who haven't seen the musical or read the book ought not to expect the full story out of a Highlights album. That kind of expectation is really too much to ask out of a short album which has been cut down from 4 hours long.
I'd recommend this to people who liked some of the Les Mis songs but don't want to buy 4 hours' worth of music to get a couple of songs. I think this is also a great choice for people who have read the book or who otherwise know the story, and would like to get a taste of how the musical treats the story of The Miserable.

Soundtrack Masterpiece by Jerry Goldsmith.......2007-07-06
The full soundtrack of Rambo 3, composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Some may think of some songs looking alike, but to the acurate listener and fan, it is, without error, a great deal. Excellent music!
Inside the CD enchart, there is an small text about the recording, musical features and techniques for songs or all the CD, that might prove useful for those that have musical education and apreciate it.
Most of the score in this CD was not used in the film. Actually, several sequences had tracked music from First Blood Part II, but nevertheless, it is still worth it!
Vastly entertaining.......2007-05-16
The late Jerry Goldsmith was a remarkable composer, and the score to Rambo III was one of his finest. It's easy to overlook these films as being silly Stallone action films (which indeed they are) but accompanying each of these films was a fantastic and captivating Goldsmith score. This one is a very enjoyable listen.
Rambo III is good.......2006-06-16
If you're a Rambo fan and like Rambo movies then this CD is worth buying. I enjoy listening to the instrumental songs from the movie which I also like. It's enjoyable listening to a digital audio CD that plays songs(in stereo sound) from movie scenes that I like. There's even some songs on this CD that's not in the movie. Jerry Goldsmith did a fantastic job on this CD.
Unbridled Goldsmith!.......2003-12-21
Offering over 76 minutes of music (most of which wasn't used in the film), RAMBO III is Goldsmith's exciting coda to the action hero trilogy. Weaving motifs such as "It's A Long Road" from FIRST BLOOD and "Escape From Torture" from RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, the maestro completes the story of Vietnam veteran John Rambo, bringing the themes around "full circle," to quote Col. Trautman (Richard Crenna) in the film. Forever the innovator, Goldsmith introduces some new themes, which thread through the score in tracks including -- "Preparations," "The Game," "Night Fight" and "Final Battle." Avoid the inferior Scotti Brothers release -- which features only about one-forth of the composers score -- and replaces the score with dreary pop tunes. Like with the release of Goldsmith's A PATCH OF BLUE or ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, Intrada once again offers Jerry Goldsmith plenty of room to spread his musical wings -- allowing the listener to float in the wake.
Somewhat disappointing.......2003-03-01
After the action genius that was First Blood Part II this is kind of a dull entry. Goldsmith seems to be more interested in giving us sort of non-incidental music. The score on this CD is the complete score that went largely unused in the movie. In fact in the film they even re-used cues from Part II. I'm guessing that this is because what Goldsmith had wrote for III was well...dull, as I have already said.
There is no awesome action theme that will have you punching the air in excitement this time round, no action tracks that will get you pumped up with excitement or even any action tracks that sound cool. There are action tracks, but they're rubbish. It feels as tho Goldsmith couldn't be bothered finishing them.
However there ARE some cool cues on this CD. But they are 'nice/peaceful' cues. And for music on a Rambo soundtrack to be nice and peaceful you know something is not right. Goldsmith's theme for Afghanistan and Peshawar are seriously beautifully melodic tunes that are really the only reason to buy this CD. The repeat of these cues in the final track (along with a brilliant send-off of the 'It's A Long Road' theme) are mesmerizing and triumphant. But not in the way the previous scores were.
Plus the 'It's A Long Road' theme is so very seriously underused and almost forgotten. Which is a real shame considering the strength it has. And I cannot imagine why Goldsmith never re-used his Part II theme considering how amazing it was.
Now that this CD is OOP it's pretty hard to find but I would seriously only advise hunting down if you are either a Rambo or Goldsmith completist.
