Triumph, ELP, and Rush - ya just gotta love these Canadian power trios from the 70's and 80's. Why can't modern music be as artistic and compositional as these bands were?

A Triumphant Score for Triumph.......2007-05-21

This is an awesome CD especially if you like 80's Rock and Roll with a tint of Heavy Metal. "Allied Forces" is the fifth studio album by Canadian power rock trio "Triumph", released in 1981. The album reached #23 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart assisted by the singles "Magic Power" and "Fight The Good Fight" which hit #8 and #18, respectively, on the Mainstream Rock chart of 1981. "Ordinary Man" showed the vocal characteristics of the group; there are several great instrumentals - "Petite Interlude" is one; "Hot Time (in the City)" is a great 50's rock tribute' and "Say Goodbye" is classic Triumph.

This threesome makes a lot of noise as their other Canadian Threesome "Rush". As with "Rush" and "April Wine", seeing "Triumph" in concert was a memorable event; this Trio could put on a show.

If you like 80's Rock and Roll; this CD (album) is a must for any 80's rock enthusiast. This was "Triumph's" best work.

ALLIED FORCES IS ONE OF TRIUMPH'S ALL-TIME GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY. .......2007-04-29

I will be writing a review on the legendary masterpiece album entitled "ALLIED FORCES" by one of Rock's all-time greatest bands ever. I give you one of Canada's favorite sons and one of Toronto's pride and joy's, T-R-I-U-M-P-H! "ALLIED FORCES" was originally released in 1981 on Vinyl/LP and Cassette on the MCA Records label. This legendary album would see its first print issue on Compact Disc in 1985. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary masterpiece album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

Canada would be the home to many great legendary bands that has passed through Rock n' Roll history in the late 60's and 70's. Canadian bands such as THE GUESS WHO and RUSH would forever hold a place in Rock n' Roll history as part of Rock's elite and premier bands. Now Canada is once again, home to another great legendary band that would hail from Toronto in 1975. When vocalist/guitarist Rik Emmett met up and joined forces with bassist/keyboardist Mike Levine and vocalist/drummer Gil Moore, the new band line-up would be complete and the stage was now set with the birth of TRIUMPH. TRIUMPH will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for writing and recording some of Rock's most sacred classic songs ever. TRIUMPH will also be remembered for being one of Rock's greatest hard-Rock power trios joining the ranks of CREAM, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD and fellow Canadian band RUSH. From 1975 to 1980, TRIUMPH would record many great hard Rockin' albums to highly critically acclaim. TRIUMPH would also quickly embark on many World Tours to promote these great albums. In 1980, All was going well in TRIUMPH'S Rock n' Roll world by enjoying the many fruits that the good life had to offer. This would also prove to be the perfect time for TRIUMPH to head back into the recording studio and record their new follow-up album. As time flew by, TRIUMPH would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the completely finished acetate and would deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, MCA Records, Inc. MCA Records would soon release the album as the legendary masterpiece "ALLIED FORCES" album in 1981. The "ALLIED FORCES" album would prove to be one of the bands greatest contributions, accomplishments and achievements in their career. In my opinion, the "ALLIED FORCES" album is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals. The 'ALLIED FORCES" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary three-man band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

It is now time to let the hard driving Rock n' Roll music of TRIUMPH to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary masterpiece "ALLIED FORCES" album begins with the merciless hard Rocker "Fool For Your Love," the forever TRIUMPH trademark slow acoustic turned hard Rocker "Magic Power," the synthesized and powerful instrumental "Air Raid," the breathtaking a*s kickin' hard Rocker "Allied Forces," the amazing hard Rocker "Hot Time (In This City Tonight)," the forever TRIUMPH blistering trademark hard Rocker "Fight The Good Fight," the beautifully slow soothing turned explosive hard driving Rocker "Ordinary Man," the incredible acoustic instrumental "Petite Etude" and the groundbreaking hard Rocker "Say Good Bye." May I also add that this hard-Rock power trio was sizzlin' red hot and burning on fire while laying down the tracks for this legendary album. All three members contributed their part perfectly musically resulting in joining and combining all three member's expertise in perfect harmony and taking their sound and music to another level.

Overall, this is one great legendary masterpiece album worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard TRIUMPH fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of TRIUMPH, I would do further research and invest into one of TRIUMPH'S greatest hits compilation albums. Going this route, you will save yourself a lot of time and money and at the same time, you will have taken a giant step in purchasing the right TRIUMPH album(s) that is right for you resulting in owning and starting your very own TRIUMPH music collection. If you truly love all of the classic TRIUMPH songs contained on their greatest hits compilation album, then it is in your best interests and up to you to purchase as many of the TRIUMPH albums that you may wish to include in your TRIUMPH music collection. You can do all of your researching and purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. If you get a chance, buy this album. You'll be glad that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This treasure album will definitely prove to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, the legendary "ALLIED FORCES" would be released in 1981 to highly critically acclaim. The band would once again, quickly embark on another World Tour promoting their new album in what would be their greatest tour yet. "ALLIED FORCES" immediately went gold and would quickly earn platinum status soon after. The album became a critical and commercial smash reaching #23 on the Billboard charts. TRIUMPH would continue in recording more great albums that were soon yet to come and quickly embark on many more World Tours in promoting them. There would be new stories in the TRIUMPH legend and legacy that would one day be told. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. TRIUMPH has forever left the place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Rik, Mike and Gil. Triumph's finest studio album.......2006-10-06

THE BAND: Ric Emmett (guitars, vocals), Gil Moore (drums & percussion), Michael Levine (bass).

THE DISC: (1981) 9 tracks clocking in at just under 39 minutes. Originally included with the disc is/was a 2-page foldout with next to no information (an illustration of a Flying-V guitar, and the statement that all songs written and produced by Triumph). The remastered version (1995) contains additional pictures and song lyrics. Label - MCA Records.

COMMENTS: Canada's 2nd best rock trio (Rush being the 1st) hit the top of their career with "Allied Forces"... truly a rocking masterpiece. Ric Emmett sings all but two of the songs here, but it's nice to see Moore's songs up front in the album. Moore starts off with the rocking opener "Fool Your Love". The title track, probably the heaviest song on the disc, is Moore's as well. When I first got the vinyl album in the early 80's, the title track was the one I kept going back to... that, and 6 minute "Fight The Good Fight" (#18 on Billboard's pop charts) - arguably the band's trademark swan song. "Fight The Good Fight" may be inspirational, but the melody of Emmett's acoustic guitar and the shredding electric guitar solos are what makes it such a strong song - structurely in the same vein as Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" with a soft slow start; the rest of the band joining in making the song heavier as it moves along; great guitar solo(s); lyrically strong; climactic ending. The big hit here is/was "Magic Power" (#8 on Billboard's pop charts)... perhaps the song the band is best known for. If forced to choose my least favorite track here, it'd be "Hot Time (In This City Tonight)"... not a bad song, but this album is so full of strong tracks that this 50's style rocker is simply pale in comparison. The deep album gem is "Ordinary Man" - starting off acoustic and slow, a heavy middle section and a mountainous ending. If there is one Triumph album I can listen to any time, all the way through, it's Allied Forces". Start your Triumph collection here. Classic disc (5 stars).

Triumph... at its best!!!!.......2007-05-27

Well.. where to start??.... i play the Drums..i'm into music and all kinds....from jazz to rock / country and classical...Music has been in my life from the begining... listening /hearing / seeing/ and Triumph is excellence !! I grew up with this band... and know all these songs backwards and forwards.... and if you like Triumph... YOU WILL LIKE THIS CD... and if you don't know who Triumph is ??? you should check this CD out... {if you like Rock??} it's a VERY VERY GOOD CD... AND MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD.. and is also a very good idea of what this band was about.. The WORDS and MUSIC lift you... ITS NOT the ALL 80'S HEADBANGING Stuff.. ITS REAL ROCK AND ROLL.. with that heavy sound... but without a bad message.... everything from Triumph seems to send a GOOD message and GOOD times... listen .. it will prove itself {example.. song titles} the light show from a Triumph concert is SUPER and i mean SUPER... only matched by groups like Rush and Yes [in my opinion]..and it may even be better....anyway i wanted to rate this Cd and i guess Triumph too?? i gave it 4 out of 5 only because Never Surrender is not on the CD...[i'm tough].. and thats the only reason..but by no means is this a bad CD... if you like Triumph??? most of their very best are on here {like 90 percent of}... opinions of course vary... but being a Triumph fan ...it pleased me... and if your not a Triumph fan??? and like Rock ... check these guys out !!! they are VERY good... and VERY UNDERRATED...

Missing My Favorite Song.......2005-12-14

When I was a teen I heard a song on the radio called "When The Lights Go Down" and I was blown away. It was Triumph. I got the Never Surrender album and liked the whole album. The other reviewers seem to agree with me that this greatest hits collection could have been much better. I think that anyone who calls themself a Triumph fan should go ahead and get the individual cd's and leave this greatest hits cd alone.

Pass on the Pap Please.......2005-11-26

I totally agree with the other reviewers that when it comes to Canadian rock, most of the choice tracks are left out in favour of commercial pap. While "Lay it on the Line" has to be the biggest power rock song of all time from a three man group there are sadly, a lot of omissions. In addition to the ones mentioned I would also include "Young Enough to Cry" from the "Just a Game" album. A better blues guitar song you will never hear, at least not on this compilation.

Bought this CD based on the All We Are video back in the late 80's. Doro is hot and has the best heavy metal female voice around. She puts Lita Ford to shame. Every song has a great riff to it. Love it and I'm trying to buy the earlier Warlock CDs to compliment this one. Gotta have more Doro.

An awesome release.......2006-05-18

Warlock made one truly great album in their time and this is it. Forget the earlier stuff, this is where you should start to explore this band, who were before their time in a number of ways.

It's a pity that for this album the band jettisoned their previous long time guitarist Peter Szigeti and had enlisted a couple of North American chaps into the band as this will perhaps diminish it's worth in some eyes. But that would be a pity as it's an excellent, excellent release. Those who flick through my other reviews will note that it's rare for me to give an album five stars but this one deserves it.

A track by track synopsis would be;

All We Are: A real soccer holler crowd effect lets you know this is still Warlock as this is an effect they'd used previously. The track is a great opening cut and a good statement of intent.

Three Minute Warning: This is true metal. What in the 90's and beyond started to be termed power metal. This album does represent the completion of the ideas of the previous album, in terms of it being a serious assault on the charts and the the hard rock scene of the late 80's, but the band could still pull out some serious metal. Doro goes off over a solid metal stomper.

I Rule the Ruins: A more melodic slow cruiser with great vocal lines and melody. The production values on this album are really top notch, sounding like it was recorded yesterday and this helps the band go up and down the gears.

Kiss of Death: More atmospherics with somewhat creepy overtones, but that was on purpose it would seem. A sense of danger and foreboding beyond the ken of many bands at the time who just went for over the top viciousness. Here Warlock uses intelligent lyrics and arrangements to better effect that just going over the top.

Make Time for Love: Ballad #1 for this album. Which is a bit of a respite after you've been clubbed by the first four tunes.

East Meets West: This song gels perfectly. A simple idea lyrically married to an excellent hook. Other reviewers have noted the excellent contribution to this album by one Tommy B on guitar and I'd have to concur. The guys in the band as a unit seem able to play melody or face melting metal with equal aplomb.

Touch of Evil: Another out and out metal track here. Doro coaxing all sorts of banshee wails out of her larynx. The whole thing proceeds to a crescendo of chaos (in the best possible way) that is just slightly reminiscent of the Scorpions tune Virgin Killer - ie the end bit where Klaus Meine really lets go into the upper end of his register.

Metal Tango: A metal track in Tango time. It's the arrangement rather than the fairly simple lyrics that make this track work. Following a full metal racket like Touch of Evil with this tune was excellent track sequencing.

Cold, Cold World: This is almost a ballad, but if you wanted to put it into that category you'd have to call it one of the most bleak ballads out there. Over a slightly understated musical delivery Doro belts out in angst at the injustices of the world rather than plaintively whining about it. An interesting combination.

Fur Immer: Doros solo albums show a penchant for songs performed in her native German. To my knowledge this is the first time she did it. This track must be huge in Germany presumably and despite most of the planet can't understand it's lyrics it's always exhumed for Warlock and/or Doro compilation albums. Which is a pointer towards the effect it has on the listener.

Overall if your a fan of metal, buy this. If your into the wave of female fronted metal acts then buy this. If you love clean crisp guitar heavy hard rock, by this. If your into 80's metal and hard rock, then pick this up. It something that lovers of so many types of metal can enjoy.

Warlock is definetly an underrated band! there's so much good stuff on this cd when i heard it I thought this was too good for my ears to hear!! Doro Pesch is THE best female vocalist ever and she's perfect for metal and the sexy woman can kick butt! there's absolutely no filler on this record - FLAWLESS

What's the 4-1-1?
Warlock started out in 1983 and released their first album Burning Witches a year later. The group was instantly compared to such heavy metal peers as Iron Maiden, Dio, Accept, and Judas Priest. In just four short years together, the group fronted by German vocalist Doro Pesch turned out four albums before calling it quits. Triumph and Agony was their final release together and it was probably their mot cohesive. The album starts off with the commanding rock anthem "All We Are". The groups doesn't hesitate to turn the energy and volume levels up to eleven as Doro belts out the resounding chorus with such power and melody.

Furious vocals and hard-charging rhythms propel "Three Minute Warning" into a heavy metal meltdown. "I Rule the Ruins" is a play on words that really implies that Doro rules the bedroom. Who am I to argue with her? She's backed-up by some great chugga-chugga riffs and wailing guitar solos. "Make Time for Love" is a somber ballad that centers in on Pesch's vocal abilities. The addition of piano helps add to the emotional level. "East Meets West" could pass for a war charge anthem. Only Doro could make "Metal Tango" sound so cool with her assuring and convincing delivery.

Warlock put the finally nail in their career with the ever-enduring ballad "Fur Immer". I have no clue what most of it means, but it sure is jarring and sad. That might have something to do with the warm strings and drum combination that makes up the music part of it. Doro Pesch went on to a successful solo career that continues to this day. I have no idea what happened to the rest of the group.

The Verdict
Warlock ended their partnership on a high note that left heavy metal fans with an instant classic.

Hey people I read all your reviews and you forget to mention the very talented work of Mr. Tommy Bolan who really made this album what it was. Dora after not being able to handle the credit to Mr. Bolan promply fired him after the European tour and she sunk like the hag (HACK) she truly was.
People think about it Warlock was nothing before T and A and was nothing after.

Which now brings me to the legendary album I'm about to review for all of you today. After a certain amount of time went by, TRIUMPH would emerge and come out of the recording studio with the completely finished acetate and would deliver the finished product to their record label and employer, MCA Records, Inc. MCA Records would soon release the product as the legendary masterpiece "NEVER SURRENDER" album in 1983. I truly feel that the "NEVER SURRENDER" album may not have topped the "ALLIED FORCES" album as the more superior ultimate album, but it was a great follow-up album in its own right that successfully picks up where "ALLIED FORCES" left off and should be compared as an equivalant to the "ALLIED FORCES" album. In my opinion, the "NEVER SURRENDER" album is without a doubt, a true testament of the sheer fully crafted genius and musical creativity of three extremely talented individuals that truly knew how to get down and Rock. The "NEVER SURRENDER" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary three-man band that was truly indeed, far ahead of their time.

May I also add that the band was performing together in perfect harmony to their fullest potential at their highest level while laying down the tracks during the recording of this legendary album.

As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the hard Rock music sound of TRIUMPH, the "NEVER SURRENDER" album along with the "ALLIED FORCES" album, may not be a bad place to start. However, you might want to research further into one of the many greatest hits compilation albums before you make your final decision as to which of the TRIUMPH album(s) is right for your musical needs and tastes. Either way you choose, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own TRIUMPH music collection. You can do all of your researching and purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store. Buy this album, you'll be glad that you did.

I would like to highly recommend purchasing this great legendary masterpiece album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This treasure album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. This is one great priceless gem that no hardcore music fan or devout music collector would want to be without.

In closing, the "NEVER SURRENDER album would be released in 1983 to highly critically acclaim. TRIUMPH would soon after, embark on a new World Tour in what would prove to be one of the band's greatest tours yet to date. Following the extreme success of the "NEVER SURRENDER" album, TRIUMPH would move on and record many more great albums in the many upcoming years that were yet to come. With that in mind, there would also prove to be many more new tales and stories in the TRIUMPH legend and legacy that would need to be told. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date in the near future. Since I don't listen to this "genre" of music I cannot personally comment, but my daughter-in-law, whom it was for, is very pleased. One good thing I can say is that it was easy to find and I understand she had failed in a search without a computer.

Stands with the alltime great hard rock albums.......2006-11-29

Triumph's Never Surerender is one of those sweet suprises that does not have a bad song all the way through and features three songs that rock right up there with anyone.

The first song "Too Much Thinking", just sizzles and gets you jacked up for the rest of the album.

"World of Fantasy" rates with any classic rock song of the era IMO.

"When the Lights Go Down" is another top hard rocking song.

I'm surprised these guys don't have more of a reputation cause all these songs are original, feature killer guitar work and loads of energy.

Those are the standouts for me, along with a cool ,bluesy, instrumental at the end "Epilogue", but every song is a good listen.

This is a great album, you'll be pleasantly suprised if you're just discovering these guys and you enjoy Van Halen and other hard rocking, guitar centric bands of the era.

I could go on and on about the band or the CD. There is so much to say about both. I wish they had much more airplay here in the U.S., but even so, I must say that they are in the top 5 bands in my collection of over 1000 CD's. If you love really great rock, not just top 40 stuff, you must have Triumph in your collection and Never Surrender is a MUST HAVE!. Get it and enjoy real rock as it should be! You can not go wrong with this CD!

A worthy successor to Allied Forces.......2005-12-02

Canadian power trio Triumph released their long awaited followup album to their 1981 Platinum seller Allied Forces entitled Never Surrender in the Spring of 1983.
Many fans were wondering when first buying this album if the album would be as good or better than its predecessor as the massive sales of Allied Forces made the band work hard to come up with a superb followup to their Allied Forces album.
I go with the former as did many fans who helped push the album to #26 on the Billboard album chart and Gold status here in the States.
Never Surrender picked up where its predecessor left off.
The album features some of the band's best tracks like singer/guitarist Rik Emmett's massive hit single "A World of Fantasy" and the superb six and a half minute title cut.
Singer/drummer Gil Moore's best vocal performance on this album is on the hard rocker "When the Lights Go Down" which (at first) sounds like an acoustic blues song at first before rocking out.
Other standouts are the opening "Too Much Thinking" (which had samples of the late great President Ronald Reagan at the intro of the track), the rock radio hit "All the Way" and of course Moore's hard rocker "Battle Cry".
The three instrumentals (the classical guitar intro "A Minor Prelude", the powerful second half starter "Overture (Procession)" and the closing electric guitar and classical guitar solo piece "Epilogue (Resolution)") and the rocking "Writing on the Wall" are also great songs as well.
Despite the success of Never Surrender, RCA picked a fight with Triumph and the band fled the label after this album and signed to MCA which was run by Eagles manager Irving Azoff at the time and switched the ownership of the band's music from RCA to MCA (Azoff paid RCA for the band's master tapes and would eventually revert the rights over to Triumph) and then in 1995 to Triumph's own label TRC (now known as TML whom re-mastered the album and re-released it in 2004).
Rock bands should not be on RCA as they tended to be cheated and mistreated(Styx, Triumph, The Kinks and David Bowie).
Highly recommended!

Why learn new tricks when you can still get big laughs milking the old ones? Everyone's favorite foul-mouthed canine puppet simply takes the same material he's been using since Don Rickles was in short pants, and stretches it over a series of musical pastiches, from calypso ("Underage Bichon") to, um, Yiddish musical theater ("My Mama"). With contributions from Adam Sandler, Conan O'Brien, Jack Black, and SNL vets Maya Rudolph and Horatio Sanz, this disc features more guests than a Jerry Lewis telethon (alas, no Eminem--though he gets name-checked on the hip-hop jam "I Keed"). The Jerky Boys-style crank calls quickly wear thin, and the bonus DVD is a hodgepodge of static performance footage of the best bits on the CD, plus some agonizing filler (who invited that Dell computer dork?), but on the strength of the hilarious songs alone, Come Poop With Me is nothing to turn your nose up at. --Kurt B. Dude...You're Getting This DVD.......2007-04-22

For me the best part of this DVD was watching to see which Z list celebrity they were going to roll out next to get schooled in an insult contest by a rubber dog. And really they don't disappoint because they are more than able to find total losers willing to do anything to get their ugly mugs on TV. The whole thing works as a theater of the absurd where some jokes work and others do not but you have to take them both together. His "Sense of Smell" song is a bust as all the jokes are production line garbage that he can just apply to any tool sitting in the front row. But true to his name he can insult with the best of them, so much so that I, famous insulter that I am, found myself getting jealous that I couldn't lay the smackdown as well as he could.

Early on Triumph lets two MTV wannabes wander out and then reality checks them both, fun but they seemed to be having fun as well. This is not good. We the viewers much prefer to watch the mark/deserving chump get all worked up into a state of righteous indignation. "How dare this dog besmirch by nonexistent reputation." Enter Vincent Pastore from "The Sopranos," a man whose sole job is to be a hanger on and to hope that nobody points out that he has been swimming with the fishes since season 2. He actually thinks that he has a shot against the mutt, but when Triumph drops the "How do you keep the weight on if you don't have a job" line everybody realizes that he is out of his league. Conan O'Brien, The Man (and for once I say that as a compliment), shows up but ultimately disappoints. But for me the highlight was watching as two of the biggest stooges in the history of marketing came out and got put in their place. Ben Curtis (the Dell guy) and Jared Fogle (former fatty turned Subway mouthpiece) both make utter fools out of themselves. Jared, as usual, tries to turn his lowest moment into a commercial for his masters. Ben, thinking he still has a career, blathers on about some "Broadway" show he did but can't find the chair located directly behind him. They are both idiots and hopefully they will think twice next time they get an itch to go on TV.

I am surprised to say this but I can recommend this DVD. The jokes are vicious, which is just how I like them. It is also wholly original; Triumph takes on the role of the judgmental fan that gets the opportunity to tell the celebrities just how stupid they are. I did find it amazing that these people were willing to go on stage just to get steamrolled by a puppet, but I guess that is the reality TV culture we live in. Janeane Garofalo and Robert Wuhl just stand there and take it, which I'm sure was good for them but not so much for us. Sure some of the stuff can be skipped over, but the DVD is short and I can say that it is a worthy way of spending an hour. So for an experience like no other (unless you own other Triumph DVDs) I say check this out because it is a good time had by all not on stage. ***1/4

I admit to being a Triumph fan. His work on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and guest shots on "Hollywood Squares" are great. I finally bought this album last summer, almost two years after its release, and although some tracks brought laughs, the wanna-be edginess made this disappointing. I got laughs from "Who", "Benji's Queer", "Cats are C**ts", "Together in Pooping" and "I Keed". I have no problem with lowbrow humor, but, some songs are just vulgar for the sake of being vulgar, such as "No Rules in the Animal Kingdom", "You Had to Work Blue", and the tribute to his mom. I can honestly say that there were parts of those three songs where I actually cringed at some of the stuff he said, and I don't get easily offended. Triumph is funny on TV, when his dialogue is somewhat limited, but in an uncensored environment, he tries way too hard to be offensive.

I was first introduced to the symphonic power metallers formerly known as Rhapsody (name changed due to copyright issues) on their 2006 live album Live in Canada. I have to say that I am just not that impressed or entertained by their latest studio effort. The group tends to rely more or the theatrical elements rather than focusing on their metal music. The vocals tend to be oversung, or drowned out by the chaos in the background. Rather than enhancing your metal experience with musical theatrical elements, Rhapsody of Fire puts you to sleep with them. The group does stay true to their fantasy themes however.

First of all, I can not believe the people that gave this cd 5 stars do not work for for Rhapsody!!! While I do think this is a very good cd, it is not a good power metal cd. There is virtually no speed at all, only a little in the first couple songs. There are a lot of good slower, mid paced songs, but I can't pick out any specific songs that I would skip to. This is definately a cd that you need to listen to all the way through to appreciate. For long time Rhapsody fans, I think this can be an enjoyable cd. For new fans, this is not the place to start, get one of the earlier releases(Symphony of Enchanted Lands, if you don't already have it.). By the way, avoid Luca Turilli's Dreamquest cd at all costs!!!!!!!!

The New Rhapsody - Excellent Epic Symphonic Metal.......2007-01-03

No you're not seeing things. It is Rhapsody in all their excess and you know what? It sounds pretty good. Not sure of the reason for the name change but it seems to have made them less hyper and more melodious (if that's possible). Plenty of medieval melodies, soaring vocals, backing choirs and of course, bombast.

Not unlike Luc Turilli's two new separate releases sans the female lead vocalists, but not quite as good. For fans of Therion, Dreamquest, Epica.

Just A Game (1979.) The third Triumph studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
Triumph. The Canadian hard rock trio is definitely one of the ultimate bands to ever emerge from the northern nation. Despite not being as popular as many of the other bands of their era, the group's music is some of the finest rock and roll ever created. Although the band's first two records, Triumph and Rock And Roll Machine, were both excellent, they did little to get the attention of music fans outside of the band's native land. This all changed with the release of the band's 1979 third album, Just A Game. Lay It On The Line, one of the album's cuts, became the band's first and biggest hit. The album won the band critical acclaim from a greater audience than ever before, and they were now on their way to stardom! So, how is the album? Read on for my review of Just A Game.

OVERVIEW:
Triumph released their third album, Just A Game, in 1979. The band consisted of its usual classic lineup of guitarist Rik Emmett, drummer Gil Moore, and bassist Mike Levine. The band members produced the album themselves. Attic Records released the album. Tracklist for the record consists of Movin' On, Lay It On The Like, Young Enough To Cry, American Girls, Just A Game, Fantasy Serenade, Hold On, and Suitcase Blues.

REVIEW:
There's a reason this is the album that was Triumph's first commercial success - the album is AWESOME! For the first time the band was making an impact on the musical world on a large scale. The band's classic hard rock stylings were making the international breakthrough the group had always dreamed of, at long last! And the band's commercial appeal would only grow larger into the next decade. Of course, after this, many would claim the band "changed with the times" too much. As such, this is often revered as the band's finest effort. Read on for my review of Just A Game.

-SIDE A-

-Movin' On (Moore):
Vintage classic hard rock. This track was an excellent way to start the album off. Everything you could want in a classic, fun-to-listen-to rock tune is here. The first track on the album should be one that will keep the listener interested, and this one does just that, sure enough.

-Lay It On The Line (Moore):
Triumph's first and biggest hit, and the song that gave this album its godlike status among classic rock albums. With awesome guitar playing, this is a song that is hard enough for the hard rock crowd, but appealing enough for the pop rock crowd. It's the best of all worlds, rolled into a single song. One of the greatest songs ever recorded. Period.

-Young Enough To Cry (Moore):
Extremely gloomy, hard and heavy. This is hard, depressing rock with a bluesy touch. At many times, the song brings Aerosmith's seventies stuff to mind. Pretty much everything I love about classic hard rock, this song has. One of my all-time favorite Triumph songs, as well as one of the band's most underrated.

-American Girls (Moore):
Here's another one of those tunes like Lay It On The Line, which takes the perfect sound that combines elements of hard rock and pop rock. What results is another song hard enough for the hard rock, but at the same time, appealing enough for the pop rock crowds. Excellent stuff. Too bad it didn't become a big hit like the aforementioned song.

-SIDE B-

-Just A Game (Emmett): The album's title track is, not surprisingly, an excellent song. Here the band slows down the musical pace a bit, creating something that is more on the side of melodic rock. It's still got plenty of fast-paced guitar and some nice hard rock elements, but it's more on the melodic side than some of the other stuff on here. Nonetheless, it's a damn good song, and definitely one of my favorites on here.

-Fantasy Serenade (Emmett):
Basically, this is a short acoustic session. The piece is very melodic and beautiful, definitely a far cry from the hard rock that dominates the rest of the album. Unfortunately, the piece is very short, and as a result, underdeveloped in comparison to the other tracks here. It's still damn good though.

-Hold On (Emmett):
This is another melodic piece. And it's another great one, too. Very slow and peaceful in its execution, the song bares somewhat of a resemblance to the band's later hit, Magic Power, in many ways. It's a nice, peaceful tune, though not without its moments that rock. Awesome song.

-Suitcase Blues (Emmett):
The album's closing tune is one of its more irregular and more unique pieces. It's a more traditional, bluesy song. This sounds nothing like any of the other songs on the album, and yet, somehow, it works. It's irregularity and uniqueness make it a very unique song, and a nice album closer.

OVERALL:
Overall this is a damn good Triumph album - arguably the band's finest work. The band rocks from start to finish on this one, serving up a diverse and excellent mixture of sounds all the way through. Gil, Mike, and Rik rule on this album. It's very much arguable that no album the band did equals this one in terms of sheer quality. If you're at all a fan of classic rock, DO NOT be without this album. If you're only gonna buy one Triumph album, this is probably the best choice. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
Like most Triumph albums, this one was recently reissued and remastered in America. These reissues are quite abundant in the States, and I'm glad to see these classic albums are widely available again. I just wish they had included bonus content on the albums. Other than that, no complaints with the reissues.

A Band Made for a "Greatest Hits".......2006-02-22

4 1/2 really. While Triumph was able to write great songs, this is their only release that sounds good from beginning to end. Lay It On The Line, Just A Game, & Suitcase Blues have to be on any release that calls itself a "Best of."

The sweet, jazzy Suitcase Blues ranks among my favorite Triumph song and many times have I walked around with its melody and lyrics swimming through my head.

Take a few songs from each of their albums, place then on a double CD and you've got early 80s perfection. Before arthritis killed my "rock star" future, I played several Triumph songs on guitar and enjoyed each one of them.

The breakthrough of Canada's other great hard rock export.......2005-12-02

Triumph's third album Just a Game was originally released in 1979 on RCA.
The original album had a tinny sound but then MCA issued a better sounding version in 1985 and then Triumph reissued it on their own label TRC which is an independent label here in the US in 1995 complete with the original artwork and TML(was TRC) re-issued it with a NEW REMASTER and full artwork in 2005.
Just a Game introduced us Americans to Triumph which consisted of Gil Moore(drums, vocals), Mike Levine(bass) and the great Rik Emmitt(guitars and vocals). It wasn't until 1999 that I first heard this album on CD and then bought the reissue and it's well worth the price of admission, so to speak especially for the album's rock radio staples Hold On(which was the band's first US Top 40 hit) and the classic Lay It On The Line.
However, there is more to Triumph's 1979 breakthrough than the two aforementioned classic rock radio staples. Moving On and American Girls are two of Gil Moore's best vocals ever which appear on this album, his blues influenced vocals are a great counterpoint to Rik's searing tenor. The title cut and the closing Suitcase Blues are some of Rik's finest hour as a musician and songwriter. The latter sounds like a song that you could drink a good drink to when your woman leaves you for another man without notifying you.
Unfortunately Rik, Gil and Mike were overshadowed by Geddy, Neil and Alex a/k/a the other infamous power trio Rush whom are the greatest and most successful Canadian rock band in history.
Who would have thought Canada wasn't big enough for two amazing power trios is nuts as both Triumph and Rush are great bands.

Just A Game and growing up........2005-08-03

I was 15 years old and K-SHE 95 in St. Louis played Lay It On The Line. From that moment on I became a devoted fan for life. I ran out on my bicycle down to Cricket Records and bought the vinyl album with my allowance. Loved the game board on the inside of the album but most importantly, the music. It spoke to me and I can tell you that Triumph made great music throughout their career but never as good as they did on Just A Game.

Best songs: Young Enough To Cry, Just A Game, Lay It On The Line, Hold On and American Girls.

Anyone who is not all that familar with Triumph should buy this album first. This is the benchmark for everything that followed and the 2 albums before this one.

Commercially, Allied Forces was their big breakthrough and most successful album. Just A Game is the blue print for Allied Forces. First times a charm in this case.

This album reminds me of being 15 and getting turned on to the most explosive guitar and vocals, bass and drum attack I'd ever heard.

Anyone hesitating to buy this album should not think twice. Buy it now!

this is as i always say a most have cd to every metal head

First Taste of Manowar.......2006-08-15

This was my first Manowar album I purchased and I was blown away. I think Rhino's drum solo on the opening track is my favorite part of the whole album. Just for the fact that when I crank my bass up all the way in my car and turn up the song I always get chills. "Into Hades my soul Descends!"

One Star or Five?.......2006-01-10

I guess it depends on your perspective. The first track is hysterical and probably worth your time, but the humor seems to wain shortly after. It's simply one of the worst albums I've ever heard in my entire life. It's so ridiculous it's awesome. The band tries to mask their inadequate songwriting with frequent flashy solos that have absolutely no meat to them. Technically they aren't even impressive. I can't tell you how many times the guitarists repeat the same riffs in their solos. What they are good at is double picking vamps.

There are strong similarities between certain passages in this album and Celine Dion. I'm not kidding. How can these guys have the balls to get the "more metal than thou" platform? Let's not even get into the lyrics. They make Helloween and Blind Guardian look like gifted lyricists.

I'd save money for that fantasy sword that you're saving up for.

Wrong Idea Reviews.......2005-10-22

Loads of people on here are getting the wrong idea about Manowar...why buy their albums to "laugh" at them...then say you are a big fan...i dont know

But if you are a heavy metal fan, power metal fan, epic metal fan, Escapist metal or whatever you will love ManowaR and this album, one of my favourite ManowaR albums...the title track is just unbelievable and is an album in itself. In 8 parts it demonstrates ManowaRs incredible talent. We all know they dont write the best lyrics in the world, but they write fantastic metal songs, this title track is my favourite ManowaR song, it has bass solos, guitar solos, drum solos, ballads, double bass drums, fast riffs, lyrics beyond "We Are The Kings Of Metal" -nothing wrong with that except its nice to hear a song with some thought in the lyrics :).

Other highlights on this album include "Demons Whip", "Power Of Thy Sword"(one of their best) and "Master of the Wind"

So anyway five stars for a fantastic accomplishment, if you are one of those people who think ManowaRs albums are all the same then you are not my friend and you should buy this album right now

This album takes the listener on a musical excursion through the history of the famous Regiment-, Division- and Panzerkorps- "Grossdeutschland", presenting military marches and soldier's songs in a compilation that chronicles this elite German military unit's evolution from the "Wachtruppe" - the army guard detachment stationed in Berlin during the Weimar Republic - to the mighty combined arms force of the late war years. Brandenburg Historica has searched the globe to assemble the priceless 78rpm records (dating from 1928 to 1943) that at we have transcribed for this compilation. Eighteen of this album's TWENTY tracks feature marches and soldiers' songs that are performed by the unit's own choruses and/or bands, while the remaining selections highlight central aspects of Grossdeutschland's unit history and wartime career. These rare source recordings have been restored for maximum fidelity while preserving their unique period ambience. Included in this collection are not only "Grossdeutschland's" official parade march and its presentation march (performed in a rarely heard "honor guard" arrangement with the German national anthem), but also a rare transcription of "Grossdeutsche Grenadiere", the regimental song of GD that features music by GD Obergefreiter Hans-Martin Majewski and lyrics by Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland's commander in the French Campaign, Oberst Gerhard Graf von Schwerin. Also presented is a selection of the parade marches and songs of the German mechanized forces of the Second World War (including a rare vocal version of the much requested "Panzerlied"), as well as those traditional marches played during guard changing ceremonies and parades in which the "Grossdeutschland" units were regular participants. Painstakingly researched and produced, the album is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated twenty four-page booklet that presents a detailed overview of "Grossdeutschland's" career, the history of its two bands and detailed background information on the featured musical selections.

GD CD.......2007-07-09

This CD is excellent and well worth the price, the sound quality is first class and includes rare music that you probably will not hear elsewhere.
There is also a very detailed history of the Division included with the CD, something that goes beyond the expected. Purchasers will have no regrets when buying this CD.

Groß Deutschland music........2007-07-06

As an re-enactor I like to know as much as possible about the people I re-enact. In my case Groß Deutschland 1 Co. 1e zug, in Holland. That's also the reason why I purchased this CD. German army was know to be a foot-soldiers army and marching with songs and music was common. This CD contains the music of GD's own marching band and it sounds as good as it should be. There is also a piece in wich the "wachregiment" is givven verbal orders and continues marching on the bands music. Also the "Panzerlied" "Erica" and "Westerwald is sung on this CD wich gave me the oppertunety to learn the lyrics on music, so our "troop" can also sing them when on the march. Fot what it's worth, I like the CD because the music is very recognizeble for the period of time and is very well played by the GD band.

An excellent compilation.......2006-06-26

The twenty tracks on this CD are relevant not only to GD, but to German military music in general, with many well known pieces. Sound quality is excellent, better than I had expected from this kind of archival material. The accompanying liner notes booklet is unusually comprehensive and provides both a brief history of GD and of the various musical selections. Highly recommended!
