This 1997 album debuted at the top of the pop, country, and Christian album charts. Sadly, it underscored the artistic vacuum surrounding Rimes in the wake of her explosive 1996 hit single "Blue." At a time when female country singers were being lauded for their growing depth and sophistication, this collection of "inspirational songs" seemed anachronistic and downright corny. The concept was more appropriate to a TV-marketed album by some faded legend than a singer so young. Even the best singers would have difficulty bringing anything new to the over-recorded title song, "Bridge Over Troubled Waters," "God Bless America," "Amazing Grace," and "The Star Spangled Banner," songs impossible to redefine. That might explain why Rimes's vocals throughout are as soulless and detached as her performance of "Blue" was passionate and earthy. At times, she sounds as if she's singing from a teleprompter. The album's success is undeniable. Whether it did her talent justice is another matter. --Rich Kienzle

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and Beautiful.......2006-06-14

This is a beautiful album. The recording of "Amazing Grace" is worth the price of the album alone. It will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. I bought this album a few years ago not knowing much about LeAnn Rimes and "Wow" I was blown away. Check this album out and I'm sure you will be too. Nuff said.

4 out of 5 stars How Could I Live Without LeAnn Rimes?.......2006-03-31

This is such a great LeAnn Rimes' album! She has a very beautiful voice and just perfect for these gospel songs. These songs are that kind of you could sing in church. LeAnn Rimes sings with emotion. The song "You Light up My Life" is a great opener and there is very good songs like "The Rose", "Bridge over Troubled Waters" etc. There's no bad song in this album. However, the album has only a few excellent songs, rest of the songs are good but not excellent. I like the lyrics very much but there's something missing. Maybe it is that these songs are covers. However, a great extra for my LeAnn Rimes collection.

2 out of 5 stars It would have helped if she didn't sing too LOUD on this one!.......2006-02-20

This wasn't a good followup to Blue to me. It would have helped if LeAnn Rimes didn't sing too LOUD on this one! While the emphasis is on inspirational songs, the music comes off as overproduced, overblown and LeAnn tries to pull off her own Celine Dion by overdoing it a third on most of the ballads.
Even the remake of Debbie Boone's overplayed You Light Up My Life comes off as limp. The listening performance comes off as as disturbing and misconceived, not inspiring at all as the album title wants you to believe. It's like LeAnn was pressured to get a record out on the market after the massive success of Blue. Would have been better if she sang an album of new material instead back in 1997.

5 out of 5 stars You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs.......2005-08-04

The songs on this CD were beautifully put together. I liked the combination of spiritual and patriotic music. It has extremely both uplifting and soul-searching songs. It's the best CD's I've purchased in a long time and I'd definately recommend it for anyone's music library.

Lee Ann Womack may well have the most hard-country female voice in Nashville; while her first two albums showed much promise, they didn't boost her past the middle of the pack. So what's the Nashville solution? Instead of playing to her strengths, make her soprano sound smaller and more compact (think Dolly, not Tammy), de-twang it so she sounds more creamy and dreamy. In other words, try to make her sound more like everyone else. Most of these songs are slow or midtempo, building ever so predictably, and with arrangements paying little more than lip service to roots. Womack sounds better with less accompaniment ("I Know Why the River Runs," "Thinkin' with My Heart Again") and best when her drawl prevails ("Does My Ring Burn Your Finger"). And she sounds unbeatable when she's totally involved, as on the best song, "I Feel Like I'm Forgetting Something." And who cowrote that? Why, Lee Ann did. It's the only such song here, but somebody should take a hint. --John Morthland

I love this recording of I Hope You Dance and the philosophy of life to participate. This song is especially significant to me because a friend who was having surgery for an aneurysm had a celebration of his life and this was the song that we sang with him at the party before his surgery. He made an incredible recovery and is still with us.

5 out of 5 stars why they call it singin'.......2006-12-16

I remember the day my friend's young teenage daughter Lee Anne belted out a slightly off-key Karaoke version of her near namesake Lee Ann Womack's 'I Hope You Dance' and introduced me to this strong female Nashville voice. A quick trip to the music store later, I owned the DANCE cd, my first prolonged exposure to the somewhat more mainstream sound than is common both to previous and subsequent Womack offerings.

It's beautiful music, the critics be damned.

The title track gives durable counsel that nicely balances the countrified pathos of other songs, like the mellifluous and touching 'Stronger Than I Am'.

Truth is, there's not a mediocre track on this album, thanks to some solid if predictable accompaniment, witty writing, and Womack's ever agreeable voice.

Even songs that threaten to plod ('I Know Why the River Runs') come alive when the singer's crescendoing surge rises to meet the track laid down by the base and percussion. Each track comes alive in its own way.

Purists long for more twang. But this is solid, soulful, mainstream country.

5 out of 5 stars The Lyrics Say It ALL.... Here's Hoping You ALL Dance.......2006-09-30

This song is appropriate anywhere - graduation, baptism, wedding, funeral, birthday....

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder,
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger,
May you never take one single breath for granted,
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed,
I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance,
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Livin might mean takin chances but theyre worth takin,
Lovin might be a mistake but its worth makin,
Dont let some hell bent heart leave you bitter,
When you come close to sellin out reconsider,
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
(time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along,
Tell me who wants to look back on their years and wonder where those years have gone.)

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance.
I hope you dance....i hope you dance..

5 out of 5 stars Easy listening country.......2005-07-09

When Lee Ann released her debut album, she was acclaimed as the new standard bearer for traditional country music. Her second album reinforced that status but this third album finds Lee Ann moving towards an easy-listening style although this is still essentially a country album. Following this album, Lee Ann made a significant step away from country with her next two albums (one of which was a Christmas album) but then returned to her roots with a much more traditional country album. Thus, Lee Ann has tried various styles but her wonderful voice always sounds great.

The big hit here is, of course, I hope you dance, which crossed over to the American pop charts and even became a minor UK hit - no mean achievement in an era when country singles rarely become big pop hits. Apart from I hope you dance, there are many other great songs here including I feel like I'm forgetting something (a great up-tempo song to get those toes tapping), Lonely too (an excellent ballad written by Bruce Robison, a brilliant singer-songwriter), Lord I hope this day is good (a cover of a Don Williams classic), Does my ring burn your finger (written by Buddy and Judy Miller, an under-rated folk-country duo), Ashes by now (a cover of Rodney Rowell song) and Why they call it falling (a brilliant ballad).

This high-quality album should still please most traditional country fans, if not quite as much as Lee Ann's first two albums, while also pleasing fans of contemporary country.

Sounding remarkably like Patsy Cline, LeAnn Rimes's voice slices into each song like a hot knife through butter. At the age of 13, Rimes became country's brightest new star upon the release of this impressive debut. Her balanced blend of traditional and new country owes as much to Cline as it does 1990s' style. "Cattle Call," a duet with the legendary Eddy Arnold, is just one of the many highlights on this album. Attention is focused on Rimes's distinctive booming vocals, as opposed to some snappy chops--musically, it all sounds familiar, like you have heard this before. Still, there are moments where you feel this could not be the voice of a child. As she matures, so will her feelings and presumably her songs. --Paula Ghergia

I liked LeAnn's music during this time frame even better than her current stuff. The CD arrived well packed, in good shape and on time. I'm happy.

4 out of 5 stars Talent obvious from the start.......2006-11-12

Debuting at the tender age of 13 onto the charts, LeAnn Rimes took the country music world by storm in 1997 with the release of her debut album Blue and No. 1 smash single of the same name. Eventually garnering a Grammy (and being the youngest person ever to do so to this day) lead single "Blue" is the perfect example of what made the young star so popular from day one. Sounding remarkably mature for someone so young and showcasing a modern day take on that classic country sound Rimes' delivery is what makes this debut album such a guilty pleasure. Blue is hardly a perfect listen, but songs like the aforementioned first single, "One Way Ticket," "My Baby" and "Honestly" grab the listener from the start. Don't be blue...get this record. It's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great debut.......2006-08-13

Some might think this is a really simple debut from a country artist, but some might forget that LeAnn Rimes was only 13 or 14 when she released this album. These songs sound like great country songs that Mindy McCready could've used to save her career later on. But forget about that. 10 years after its release, when you listen to this album it's just amazing! There are some tracks where you can tell she's young, but on some tracks such as "Hurt Me," where she sounds way beyond her years!

5 out of 5 stars Good Lookin' Woman.......2006-03-30

This is LeAnn Rimes' first album and I think it is also her best. The music in this album is 60% country, 25 % pop and 15 % rock. LeAnn Rimes has a perfect voice for this kind of music. Also the duet with Eddy Arnold is a good one. The most beautiful moments offer the songs like "The Light in Your Eyes" and "Fade to Blue". There's also a great rock song "One Way Ticket (Because I Can)".
Stars: One Way Ticket (Because I Can), Blue, The Light in Your Eyes, Good Lookin' Man, My Baby

5 out of 5 stars Adolescence.......2005-05-12

At the age of 13 teenagers have to face some hard issues. For example, schooling, friends, awkward feelings, and eagerness. For LeAnn Rimes i'm pretty she was experiencing the same feelings, thoughts that most face, but to place the icing on the cake release a debut album in the middle of all the choas adolescence brings. Rimes' debut album was called "Blue". Blue mixes traditional country with a contemptary feel. The album was a sensational hit and threw Rimes onto the spotlight. Now as an adult LeAnn Rimes continues to astonish and make her mark in the country world.
When I first heard the album's lead single entitled "Blue" I was blown away. I couldn't believe my ears. I immediately appreciated the vocal styling. I am quite fond of the semi yodel she does. This is were my theory of contemptary takes into furesion. The song was actually born way before Rimes' was, and as we have come to learn when Rimes first heard the song she knew the song was meant for her to sing. By adding some of her signature vocal stylings "Blue" was reborn.
The second single off the album was a song entitled "One way ticket". This song is uptempo and had some racy lyrics. For example, the song mentions "I'm gonna drink Champagne". How inapproriate is that? We are hearing a teenager whose the same age as our son/daughter/niece/nephew/brother/sister sing about drinking champagne.
The album has a number of songs that I really enjoy listening to. Honestly, Cattle Call ( a duet), Light of my life, Blue, and One way ticket. LeAnn Rimes had a great amount of success with this album which was well deserved. LeAnn won the "Best New Artist" Grammy. While most of us were in school getting past our awkard phase, LeAnn was entertaining us and making adolscence a bit easier to deal with. For that I am eternally grateful!

This is a collection of LeAnn Rimes's favorite country standards, plus one newly written hit, "Big Deal." Say what you will about this woman-child--yes, she really needs direction (the 11 remakes couldn't be more obvious choices) and a producer besides her dad. But she's slowly growing into her own style, which here falls somewhere between Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, and Tammy Wynette. Especially Patsy. Her timing on "Crazy" is quirky enough to offset the ham-fisted arrangement, and she's not bad on "I Fall to Pieces," either; her efforts on "She's Got You," "Leavin' on Your Mind," and "Faded Love" (a Bob Wills song Cline cut) fall short. She also chooses "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Lovesick Blues," two songs identified with Hank Williams that Cline recorded, and sings the latter like she knows what it means. The wanna-rock "Me and Bobby McGee" is a travesty, but at least she gets to act her age, sort of, on "Big Deal." --John Morthland

5 out of 5 stars Rips your heart out!.......2006-06-12

The Songs "Its Cryin time again","Shes got You" and "Crazy" are recorded with such passion coming from LeAnn Rimes that is just rips out your heart. They have such a somber and morose overtone that you somehow want to crawl through the speakers and comfort this aching soul. This album is a collection of golden age country standards. Listening to this album transports you to its world from which it came. You can just hear these songs being played at some small diner jukebox in South Carolina in about 1958. Leanns voice is nothing short than amazing and she belts out these tunes with such power and feeling that it can actually compare with Patsy Cline or Loretta Lynn. I seriously recommend this album and for the low price there is no reason to pass it up.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, This Isn't Her Best Album.......2006-04-04

I love LeAnn Rimes but this album is not as good as for example "Blue". The music style is mainly country through the album. There is a couple of very good songs: "Crazy", "Don't Worry", "Leavin' on Your Mind", "Big Deal", "Lovesick Blues", and a great Janis Joplin cover "Me And Bobby McGee". LeAnn Rimes has a beautiful voice and she uses it in a great way. This album isn't opened for most fans who like the album "I Need You". Still a great for those who like country and blues.
Stars: Big Deal, Lovesick Blues, Crazy

5 out of 5 stars LeAnn.......2005-07-28

I absolutely LOVE her work. She has one of the most awesome voices I have ever heard!

1 out of 5 stars Big deal.......2004-08-12

The final track on this album just about says it all... "big deal". On her previous album, LeAnn got the balance between pop and country just right, a mainstream sound for the non-hardcore fans, and enough "twang" to keep people like myself happy. But she was criticised for "going pop" on us... and this album is the result.

Unfortunately, it comprises some of the worst covers of "standards", otherwise known as "songs you've heard a million times before by other people" you'll ever hear. I was never a fan of Patsy Cline, but I'd rather listen to her version of "Crazy" than the one on here.

When I read the track listing before buying, I was really looking forward to hearing some modern recordings of all the old favourites. Unfortunately both LeAnn's performance and the arrangements leave much to be desired.

It's not all bad, however. The final track "Big Deal" is quite good. Interesting that it's the only new song on here.

Don't bother with this unless you're a hardcore LeAnn fan who wants to own all her albums. For a better all-rounder, pick up a copy of "Sittin' On Top Of The World" instead.

2 out of 5 stars SHOULD HAVE BEEN TITLED LEANN'S COUNTRY FAVORITES.......2004-02-22

Even though this is not really Leann Rimes's self titled album this cd should've been titled Leann's country favorites because this album is made mostly of remakes of old country hits it is one of my favorite albums of Leann Rimes and one of three of her albums which I own. I mainly bought this cd because I loved Leann's version of Cryin' Time which also happened to be one of dad's favorite songs and no one does it better than Leann AND it should have been released as a single and a hit on country airwaves. I was also shocked that Leann rimes does a pretty good version of Patsy Cline's classic Crazy which is in my opinion a hundred times better than Julio Iglesias's horrible version and Leann does this classic justice oh boy if Patsy Cline were alive today she would be so proud. But my second favorite has to be Big Deal that was the first single and the only new song to be released as a single that tells about a girl telling her boyfriend not to brag so much about himself and is a laugh. Donald Trump should sing this song to the contestants on his tv show and they will listen {ha ha} Even though the album has a misleading title it's a joy to listen even if you are not a country fan. "El stinko," writes one Amazon.com customer, but to be fair to Rimes, her second album since the surprising debut Blue is more misguided than merely bad. She bites off more than she can chew, and producer Wilbur Rimes (LeAnn's father) tries to force-feed warmed-over Adult Contemporary arrangements and overheated pop fare ("Purple Rain" may be the silliest cover in "country" history), the kind neither Rimes nor the listener can easily swallow. Sittin' on Top of the World may be an advance from the truculent You Light Up My Life, but Rimes's talents are being squelched by the superstar machine. Still, with the right production and right songs, Rimes may yet make a consistently strong country album. --Roy Kasten

The tracks "Rock Me" and "Undeniable" are the albums strongest songs and LeAnn does an amazing performance of Prince's "Purple Rain". My opinion is that this is LeAnn Rimes strongest album and is a must for any fan of hers.

4 out of 5 stars Nothin' New Under the Moon?.......2006-04-06

Well, you could say that this album belongs to LeAnn Rimes' best ones. There's a couple of hits: "Looking Through Your Eyes" (from the "Quest for Camelot" Motion Picture) and "Commitment". Then there's "Undeniable", it's a great song. After that the songs are so good, well LeAnn has a great voice, so that's one reason. Surely I could pick "These Arms of Mine", "Nothin' New Under the Moon", "Rock Me" and "Sittin' on Top of the World" but the truth is that this album is a great one but not her best work The last song "Purple Rain" which was originallyt made by Prince is one of the greatest moments in this album. You could say that quantity doesn't replace quality but this album has many great songs.

5 out of 5 stars LeAnn's Best Album.......2005-07-03

I have 4 of Leann Rimes's albums(Blue,LeAnn Rimes,Unchained Melody & Sittin' on Top of The World).I can definitely say that this is by far her best album as it has a perfect balance of country & pop tunes.& her voice easily beats the likes of Celine and Mariah. This album should have at least been Grammy nominated but oh well. Finally, this is one album youcan NEVER get bored of.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2005-04-22

This CD has a nice mix of combination of romantic and upbeat music. Have been listening to it everyday for past month and haven't gotten tired of it. "More than anyone deserves" is so sweet and the words to "Commitment" is so true.
I love her tone pitch in "Purple Rain"...her voice is amazing.

This album consists of material recorded prior to Rimes's best-selling 1996 national debut, Blue. The program includes such time-tested staples of Rimes's live show as "Cowboy's Sweetheart," "I Will Always Love You," "Blue Moon of Kentucky," and "Unchained Melody." As amazing as it is to hear a voice this powerful and polished coming from a 15-year-old girl in 1997, it's even more amazing to consider that she was only 10 or 11 when most of these recordings were done. What's not so amazing are the five contemporary country numbers, which point to the problem Rimes continues to face in finding new material worthy of her once-in-a-generation vocal abilities. --Bill Holdship

4 out of 5 stars River of Music.......2006-04-06

LeAnn Rimes has been always on the river of music. She hasn't made bed music, or at least I haven't heard her sing bad music. This album is great as other albums too. LeAnn Rimes has such a good voice. She sings very purely "I Will Always Love You". Her skills are great and she does also "Yesterday" (Yes, this is The Beatles song) very purely. The album gives great country music too. When I let my brother hear "(I Want to Be a) Cowboy's Sweetheart, she instantly asked me to record that for him. Well, I wanted to buy this album, it is so good. I don't like so much the songs "River of Love" and "Broken Wing" but rest of the stuff are very good. Especially "Sure Thing" is a great song. LeAnn Rimes is maybe the best country artist in the world, at least I like her the best.

4 out of 5 stars Good songs and such a pure voice! .......2006-03-01

She's very young here but her voice is clear as a bell.
A friend of ours plays harmonica on one of the cuts! Rest in peace, Ray Carl.

3 out of 5 stars Much better than "Inspirational Songs" but............2004-08-25

.....this collection of done-to-death songs is little more than an attempt to cash in on LeAnn's fame. Unless you're a hardcore LeAnn fan, this CD is really a waste of time and money. Her voice, with its tremendous range and potential, is charming on "I Will Always Love You" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" but the more mature "Blue" is still her best recording to date.

5 out of 5 stars Suzie's favorites.......2003-03-26

I love this cd very very much when I listened to it on my cd player. All the songs on this cd goes way back in 50's and 60's
that has the Beatles song "Yesterday", Dolly Parton song "I Will Always Love You", The Righteous Brothers song "Unchained Melody", and a Elvis Presley song "Blue Moon Of Kentucky". I think LeAnn did that song "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" very well because she puts her mind into the memory of Elvis so much so so much watching how she shines her whole charisma stands out very well it really shines too so I give 10 stars of working her butt off doing that song that's where she let opera stands out from her heart when she sings that song-she's excellent very excellent. I am a big Elvis Presley fan I do know some the rest of his songs but not that much. I know LeAnn did one of the songs from Elvis Presley she sang with Chris Izaak however you spell his last name the song is called "Devil In Disguise" they did song really really great that had a lot of charisma I give them both 10 stars. I really recommend this cd to everybody out there who are a big LeAnn Rimes fan understanding this cd I bet all the oldest adults who were raised through the 50's and 60's would love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible for one so young.......2003-03-25

LeAnn was about 11 when these recordings were made, so she was still learning her craft. Even so, this is a fascinating collection that showcases her wonderful voice. Of the songs, there are five oldies, three of which are so well known that it is difficult to imagine that there is any adult in Britain or America who has not heard them countless times.

I will always love you is Dolly Parton's classic song that eventually became Whitney Houston's biggest hit ever. Yesterday is the Beatles song that has been covered more times than any other pop song. Unchained melody was originally a hit for several singers in the fifties, but is perhaps most closely identified with the Righteous brothers. They had a hit with it in the sixties but an even bigger hit in 1990 when it was featured in the Ghost movie soundtrack. Blue moon of Kentucky is less famous than those three, but this Bill Monroe classic has been covered many times, including by Elvis Presley. The oldest song, I wanna be a cowboy's sweetheart, on which LeAnn demonstrates her skills as a yodeller, was a million-seller for Patsy Montana in the thirties.

LeAnn stamps her identity on all those oldies, but also shows her skills on contemporary material, including Share my love, a song she co-wrote. To my ears, this is a wonderful album. Of course, it's not quite up to the standard of her official debut album, but anybody who enjoys that may be surprised at just how good this is.

While much of the material on Womack's sophomore effort treads well within the unspoken boundaries of Nashville romance (broken hearts, unrequited love), there are a few gems that hint of a saucy character behind the sweet voice. "I'll Think of a Reason Later" is a funny, honest portrayal of a woman meeting an old lover's new flame. "The Man Who Made My Mama Cry" is an unflinching dismissal of a prodigal father, and "I'd Rather Have What We Had" mourns for the steamy affair that led to a now-mundane marriage. Supported by a pair of Vince Gill duets, Some Things I Know effectively balances country music convention with honest emotion. --Alexandra Russell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant traditional country with contemporary edge.......2005-04-04

This is an outstanding album so it's difficult to pick out songs (nice problem, that). Three of the tracks (A little past Little Rock, Now you see me now you don't, I'll think of a reason later) made it on to Lee Ann's greatest hits compilation. They fairly represent this album although they aren't necessarily my favorite tracks such is the quality of the album.

The set opens with the title track, an aching ballad that sets the standard for what follows. Two other outstanding ballads (I'd rather have what we had, When the wheels are coming off) describe a couple that are still together, but whose love for each other seems to have faded. Another fine song (If you're ever down in Dallas) is about a woman who regrets giving up on a man. The final track (The preacher won't have to lie) reminds us that money isn't everything. Well, those are just a few of the great songs on this album.

Following her similarly styled eponymous debut album, it seemed that Lee Ann was going to be a standard-bearer for traditional country music in the new millennium. This was not to be, although Lee Ann eventually returned to traditional country in 2004.

If you enjoy hearing Lee Ann (or anybody else) sing traditional country, you'll surely love this album.

4 out of 5 stars lee ann womack- somethings i know........2005-02-23

Womacks 2nd cd is not bad. there are some really good songs on it, and her vocals are very good. I really love her voice in some of these songs, especialy "I keep Forgetting" it's so heart felt and the song suits her voice perfectly. My faveorit songs on this album are; "Little Past Little Rock", "(Now You See Me) Now You Don't", "Man Who Made My Mama Cry", "I'll Think of a Reason Later", "Don't Tell Me", "I keep Forgetting" and "If You're Ever Down in Dallas". These songs are all wonderful in their own way. From the sadest songs, "The man Who made My mama cry" and "Don't tell me", to the more up-beat and fun, "if you're ever down in Dallas" and "i'll think of a reason later". a really great album that is worth alisten, i'm sure glad i picked it up!

5 out of 5 stars Oh the Fun.......2003-12-06

I absolutly love this album, and all that is represents-pure country. "Little Past Little Rock" and "Some Things I Know" are heart-wrenching while "I'll Think of A Reason Later" is laugh out loud funny, in a country way. This is a return to the classic country that so many love and miss.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the first.......2003-09-19

Lee Ann Womack's second album SOME THINGS I KNOW in my opinion, even improves on her first. The album is still very traditional like her first, but even better. The biggest hit here was the tongue in cheek uptempo song "I'll Think of A Reason Later", about hating your ex's new love. The first single was the ballad "A Little Past Little Rock", which was a major hit for her as well. "Now You See Me Now You Don't" was also a hit from the album. I think the strength of the album is in the ballads. The title track is a poignant song, "The Man Who Made My Momma Cry" is heartbreaking and sad, but my favorite track is the ballad "I Keep Forgetting". This song is so beautiful and Vince Gill provides great harmony to the track. "Don't Tell Me" is another great song too. Other highlights include "I'd Rather Have What We Had" and "If You're Ever Down In Dallas". This was Lee Ann's last truly country album, as she moved away to a more polished sound beginning with her groundbreaking 2000 album I HOPE YOU DANCE. Don't forget about this one, in many ways it's even better.

5 out of 5 stars Another Triumph.......2001-12-05

On her sophomore release, Lee Ann Womack continues her commitment to recording traditional country music. Featuring material from some of Nashville's best writers, and harmony vocals from Vince Gill, SOME THINGS I KNOW showcases Womack's terrific voice, which is reminiscent of a young Dolly Parton. She's delicate and vulnerable on ballads like the title track and "Don't Tell Me," and smart 'n' sassy on uptempo numbers like "(Now You See Me) Now You Don't" and the absolutelyhysterical "I'll Think Of A Reason Later."

A standout is "The Man Who Made My Mama Cry," a song co-written by Womack, in which she angrily tells off the absentee father who's trying to reenter her life. But the album's highlight is a collaboration with Joe Diffie, "I'd Rather Have What We Had," in which two adulterous lovers finally make it legal, only to find that they're bored beyond belief. Tammy Wynette could've recorded this song 20 years ago, yet in Womack's hands, it sounds completely modern. That's her true talent--one which SOME THINGS I KNOW shows off to full effect.

Lee Ann Womack is a rarity in modern Nashville--an authentic honky-tonk debut album. Producer Mark Wright has refused to bury Womack's small-town, East Texas drawl under the Hollywood soft-rock cloaking that Music Row favors these days. As a result, the young singer's soprano projects an attitude too unsophisticated to hide any emotion. On the first single, "Never Again, Again," you can hear in quivering high notes the dilemma of a woman who keeps breaking her own promise to never take her ex-lover back. Not every song is that sharply focused, and the obligatory boot-scootin' dance numbers and string-smothered ballads dilute the album's impact. But you can hear Womack's potential when she assumes the persona of a hardened waitress explaining the facts of life to an ex-boyfriend in "Montgomery to Memphis." --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must have for Traditional Country lovers!!!.......2005-03-31

This is definetly one of Lee Ann's best Albums. NOT A BAD SONG ANYWHERE ON THIS CD!! If you like good Tradition country music you'll love this CD!! This CD also produced the top ten hits "The Fool" and "You've Got To Talk To Me". Other great songs on this album are "Buckaroo", "Trouble's Here", and "Never Again, Again", or at least those are my favorites!!

This CD is a must have for any country music lover's collection!!

4 out of 5 stars Lee Ann's Debut.......2003-09-19

This album came out in the spring of 1997. Lee Ann's first single was "Never Again, Again", a midtempo country number about always taking a man back. Immediately buzz started about this artist, she was the most traditional thing to come around in a long time. Her big hit that put her on the map was the ballad "The Fool". There's some great songs on here, like "Montgomery to Memphis", "Buckaroo", "Man With 18 Wheels", etc. The duet with Mark Chesnutt "Make Memories With Me" is also a highlight. My favorite song is "You've Got To Talk To Me", which was a hit for her as well. This was her first album, and as her albums progressed they became a little more polished but she is talented nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Womack's Best Work.......2003-01-25

This CD is my favorite from Lee Ann Womack. The writing is superb and Lee Ann's vocals are stellar.

"The Fool", the song that really put Lee Ann on the map is on here. The rest of this CD is really full of great songs though, like the upbeat "Buckaroo" about her dream cowboy; the Gospel wonder "Get Up in Jesus' Name"; the Zydeco-flavored "Trouble's Here" and "Never Again, Again", a great mid-tempo shuffle about always taking him back. My personal favorites are "You've Got to Talk to Me", an honest song about how women aren't mind readers and Leslie Satcher's "Man With 18 Wheels", an uptempo romp about her truckin' man.

I Hope You Dance may be her biggest album, but this one showcases her deep country roots best.

5 out of 5 stars Grounded In Tradition.......2002-09-02

While pop was starting to take over Nashville back in 1997, Lee Ann Womack's self-titled debut ushered her onto the scene as the most traditional-sounding female vocalist the genre had seen since Patty Loveless debuted in the late '80s. In the middle of more pop-slanted vocalists like Reba and Martina, you had 'Never Again, Again' and everyone scratching their heads wondering "How the hell did that get on the radio, and more importantly, who's the singer?" Womack's debut beautifully straddled a fine line between modern('You've Got To Talk To Me') and traditional(the brilliant--and self-penned--'Am I The Only Thing You've Done Wrong'),and her Dolly Parton-meets-Alison Krauss soprano remains a thing of fragile purity even today. This set remains arguably the most significant debut by a female country artist of the last decade.

5 out of 5 stars Contemporary country with strong traditional flavor.......2002-07-14

One of the best country debut albums of recent years, Lee Ann has managed to sound contemporary and traditional at the same time. At heart, she would probably like to do a stone country album, but she knows that would kill her career. Lee Ann is much too smart to allow that to happen, so she records music that sounds contemporary without losing her roots, something not everybody can achieve.

Never again again was her debut single, but it was her second, The fool, which really set Lee Ann on her way to stardom. There is a nice duet with Mark Chesnutt (Make memories with me), a rousing gospel song (Get up in Jesus name) and the danceable upbeat Buckaroo and Trouble's here. Other great tracks are Do you feel for me, Montgomery to Memphis and A man with 18 wheels. Actually, every track is brilliant.

This album didn't make Lee Ann into a megastar (that came via I hope you dance, her third album) but it is an outstanding album in it's own right.

Rimes showed true talent in the ever so controversal cut of How Do I Live. The release of that song was one of the most prominent points in Rimes career. Still there was an ongoing debate as to whose version was better out of 'fresh talent' that of Rimes or 'known talent' that of Trisha Yearwood. Although Yearwood's version was given the ever so desired Grammy Award, Rimes' version rode to the top of the charts and ended with an amazing CD sales count.

5 out of 5 stars LeAnn Lights Up My Life.......2001-10-23

LeAnn Rimes is the only person in this universe who would get away with releasing this song and making it a great success. The talent Rimes' has is as evident as ever in this song... if you loved the original, then you'll love this, if you haven't heard the original, then you'll love this even more!!.... Always Mirren.

5 out of 5 stars Can CDs Wear Out?.......2000-03-25

If they can, my copy of this album is going soon. Rimes brings her incredible vocal range to the Gospel field with memorable renditions of old favorites and songs soon to be classic. For example, she ends "I Believe" with a high note few singers would dare or listeners resist. "Ten Thousand Angels Cried" makes a fine addition to the popular inspiration category. Hearing her version of the National Anthem makes me want to insist that only Rimes open every baseball game from here on out. I'm writing my letter today demanding a reissue of a CD that lifts the heart and brings tears to the eye.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't light me up.......1999-04-25

I love LeAnn.. incredible vocal talent.. always technically perfect. She does sometimes lack something more though. She is not gifted at making herself "felt" through her singing. You Light Up My Life suffers a bit for that. The occasional "twang" of steel guitar doesn't help either. Much better song here is I Believe. It saves the CD.

5 out of 5 stars LeAnn is the BEST!.......1998-10-03

Of all the songs she has done, this is one of my favorites. You can sing along to the simple lyrics, and the music is relaxing. Its a great one to add to your collection.
