For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

I initially heard this album through doing Music Staff for my campus radio station. At that time, what I heard was Mike McColgan attempting to relive his glory days in DKM. Eight months later, however, it's quite apparent to me that while this doesn't quite stand up to DKM's Do Or Die, it does stand out in its own right. This is punk not so much for fans of DKM, but for the Ducky Boys. Somehow, though it manages to successfully combine the sound of DKM's Blackout! and the Ducky Boys' No Getting Out. Not quite Oi!, but nevertheless a good slice of PFR.

Mike-the vocalist for these guys made his name with early Dropkick Murphys stuff.
Don't buy this expecting a patently Irish-American sound. It is more straight-up than the Murphys and still damn good.
Following up on their first albumn, Savin' Hill, these songs take you through the lives of Bostonians and frames them in the context of todays politics and pressure.
Nothing tricky or loaded though-the songs are honest, up front and articulate punk ballads.

5 out of 5 stars Once again, amazing........2005-09-27

Mike was always near and dear to me, back in his Dropkick days and I must say, when he left and Bruisers boy Al Barr took over, I never quite felt the same (though I continue to LOVE the Dropkick's and have everything they put out). When Street Dogs came along, and I heard what they were laying down...I knew that what I'd been waiting for, for so long, had come around. Once again, with this release, they do not fail to deliver the goods that never fails to reach right into me and touch me every time.

Let it also be said that I, as a US Marine, picked up a couple of extra copies of these and sent them back to my brothers who are still doing their duty in Iraq. Lets them know that these boys carry them right in their hearts and souls, and it did the same for me. I had the luxury of hearing it on US soil however, something that is priceless. But this is something that Mike's been doing ever since day one, make no mistake about it.

I can't really express enough how much these boys mean to me, and to my brothers. Just trying to piece together a few bumbling lines here on Amazon, but definitely want to tell you that if you're thinking about getting this, think no more. Just get it, and you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Simply Amazing........2005-03-10

This was the first album I heard by the street dogs. I went to the social distortion show last week in orlando and these guys were there as well. It was worth the $25 just to see these guys. Too bad they didnt stay on the whole night. Their set was only 30 mins. After I also got to meet lead singer Mike McColgan. He is really cool. With an attitude like he has, this band will go far. At least in my opinion.

I got this album because I heard "Tale of Mass Deception" on the radio and was instantly hooked. The fact that I've been a Dropkick Murphys fan since the mid 90s probably helped as well, but I don't want to belabour the point.

In short, this is a decent album. It lacks the musical variety and celtic instrumental feel that characterized more recent efforts by bands like the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly and as such those hoping to get another round of Swagger or Sing Loud, Sing Proud should probably look elsewhere (or listen to this album with those reservations in mind). However, the music is solid and the lyrics are meaningful, possibly even catchier than the tunes themselves (and I'm the kind of person who cares more about the way a song sounds that what it says).

There is some valid criticism that many of the songs are by the numbers and seem like slightly grittier versions of pop-punk, but after a few listens this aura quickly burns away leaving you with a good taste in your mouth. The songs all address serious subjects like alcoholism, drugs, unemployment, war, corruption, misery of the working poor and the struggle to unionize. If you're looking for trendy, sugary hymns to skating, getting drunk, goofing off, and making out with a hot punk chick, you'd best stick to other more mainstream bands. If, on the other hand, you want catchy, thoughful punk with a message and are willing to accept the fact that some songs are stronger than the others and have a tendancy to sound alike, this just may be your album. Good tracks include "In Defense of Dorchester," "Patrick," "Tale of Mass Deception," and "White Collar Fraud."

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

    This CD is a ministry training tool, for it gets you back in the word, back into prayer and literally back in the streets preaching the good news of Jesus Christ. Like most Christian music of its era "Back to the street" is the real deal when it comes to acting and reacting like Jesus. Every song is fantastic from the evangelistic opener of "Back to the street", to the praise anthem of "You are I AM", to "Under cover" the accountability of Christians in the local church. This CD is incredible; Buy it.
