Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

This collection is worthy of SIX stars! This is the most enjoyable, highest-quality Percy Faith collection I have seen. Not only is the collection about as "Ultimate" as you could desire, it brings back in glorious stereo quality some of my favorite albums. The various tracks from his "Young Lovers" series are utterly fantastic!!

This is it!.......2003-04-01

This is the best compilation of Mr. Faith's orchestrations I have seen yet. Some of the music on this CD I have heard on easy listening radio stations in the 1970s that I have not seen released on CD until this set came out, such as the lush and velvety rendition of Burt Bacharach's tune "Always Something There to Remind Me", with great strings and brass. This is a great set and well worth the money.

I can't help but become nostagic about Percy Faiths version of "A Summer Place". For me it brings back such vivid childhood memories and also brings about an instant feeling of security.
If there is one tune that makes the ultimate statement about the warm, lustrious, happy months of summer this is the one.
Percys arrangements involving lush chromatic counter melodies and pizzicato violin strings were the best.
"Theme from a Summer Place" was almost the highpoint of the movie itself.
"Ebb Tide" is also handled beautifully.
If you require a legendary Desert Island Disc then this is the one.

I had the old LP of Percy Faith's greatest hits. Just browsing on Amazon.com, I came across this album, and decided to purchase it after listening to the sample tunes. I really love the song "Theme From a Summer Place". If you really enjoy good music and don't care for some of junk that is being release nowadays, give this one a try. I think you'll enjoy it. It's a great album to just unwind to after a hectic day.

Este disco, totalmente digital, con la orquesta de PF pero dirigida por Nick Perito, respeta los arreglos hechos por PF con música de diferentes épocas, es uno de los mejores! Me encantan el sonido y los arreglos. Es uno de mis preferidos. También ha habido otros, con musica latina y temas de peliculas.
Se los recomiendo, vale la pena tenerlo en la colección.

Excellent Remakes of Original Percy Faith Arrangements.......2002-03-21

This CD is a great compilation of some of Percy Faith's most popular arrangements. The sound quality is excellent, as is the track selection. It includes versions of most of his charted songs, most notably, "Theme from a 'Summer Place'" and "Moulin Rouge." Purists should note that this CD was recorded in 1994, almost twenty years after Faith's death. In my opinion, such re-recordings rarely compare to the originals and generally have little value, except to the record company. However, since Faith was primarily an arranger, this CD works remarkably well and serves as an excellent representation of what he was about. Don't be surprised if you find yourself seeking out original Faith performances (of which there are many available on CD) after listening. All in all, a worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in the easy listening format or in quality instrumental music.

A Summer Place Percy Faith.......2002-03-04

This is one Faith album you have to own if your a fan of his.Most of his prettiest songs are on this cd including my favorite Arrivedercia Roma.To date this is the only Faith cd you will find Arrivedrcia Roma on unless they reissiue Bon Voyage which isn't likely no time soon.Nick Perido does the conducting here but on most songs you can't tell a difference.He sounds just like Faith.A good reissiue by Ranwood.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Wonderful Collection.......2004-11-05

This collection is wonderful. The music easily flows through your mind and doesn't easily leave. This is normally a bad thing for some music however this collection of songs stays with you the way a memory of Summertime as a child stays with you. One of the better "Best of" collections I've ever purchased which is striking considering my favorite artist is Bjork and I generally don't like easy listening music. A must Buy.

FANTASTIC MUSIC! PERCY FAITH'S GIFT TO THE WORLD!.......2000-08-25

This incredible rendition of the Music of Mexico has been my very favorite album ever! I fell in love with this music from the very first moment that I heard it! I have worn out three vinyl copies of this album since it came out in 1957 and have waited until just this year for it to come out in the digital cd format. This is one of those incredible albums in which each and every number on both sides is excellently done! In my opinion, this album depicts "The Music of Mexico" at its best...it just doesn't get any better than this!! Percy Faith received an award from the Government of Mexico for this great work of art! Buying this album one can't possibly go wrong! It is simply a blue-chipper album that is in a league of its own! VIVA! ENJOY!

Kenny G currently owns the smooth-jazz soprano sax with his popular, mainstream arrangements and compositions. And on his first holiday album, despite occasionally predictable charts and phrasing, the saxman delivers a thoughtful and moving collection of songs, spirituals, and hymns, with his trademark sound wedded to several ensemble and orchestral arrangements. The G-man stretches out in "Sleigh Ride" and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," but these are balanced by more serious pieces such as the lovely, original "Eternal Light ( A Chanukah Song)" and "Ave Maria." There's a genuine humbleness and inspired reverence in the playing here--as in, Kenny G really means it, man. After a ghost track, "The Christmas Song," the record closes with a haunting audio history of America's last century, which runs under a revisited version of "Auld Lang Syne." Summing up a turbulent and triumphant 100 years, this one is sure to put a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye. --Martin Keller

Faith by Kenny G is Christmas music that is soothing and relaxing. This all instrumental album will allow you and your family to enjoy the holiday season while listening to great music.

This album arrived two days before Christmas 2001. It has classic songs on it especially the hidden tracks "Auld Lang Syne" and "The Christmas Song." Kenny G has Christmas in his name and especially if you like saxophone jazz music, this is a must to own.

I'm not a big Kenny G fan, but this album is pretty good. I don't care for the last track, the millenial mix, but the other songs on this album are nicely done. If you're looking for something a little jazzy to add to your holiday collection, I recommend this CD.

Kenny G. is phenomenal in his playing of the saxophone as well as the composing of the music. This is perhaps the best, most beautiful and most relaxing CD in my collection, along with his other holiday CDs. If there is one track on this disc that blew me away, it is The Millenium Mix of Auld Lang Syne. This is brilliantly and masterfully composed and performed - absolutely beautiful! In every way. Yes, I too, was wiping away quite a few tears while listening to this moving and powerful piece. It is unlike anything else I've heard. The plain, regular version is also outstandingly beautiful. There just aren't enough good things I can say about this CD so I will just close by saying to you: Buy this one, you will NOT regret it!

When I joined a popular record club in 1963, this was among the first five LPs that I selected. It is most difficult to say anything meaningful considering the overall quality of of this CD, because it is surely the very best of Percy Faith. This was the first example I ever encountered of a pop orchestra that actually made popular sixties music "beautiful." What magnificent orchestration, interpretation, and stereo quality. It is simply matchless, and "I will follow Him" is the epitome of Percy Faith's mastery!

I hear this record in 1964 in a Mexico City restaurant and I remember the great sound of Percy Faith and his Orchestra, now I have the oportunity of listen again with a great digital sound, for me its his best album.

I USE TO LISTEN TO EASY LISTENING MUSIC ON A CERTAIN FM RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO BACK IN THE 80'S. A GOOD NUMBER OF SONGS THAT I LIKED WERE PERFORMED BY THE PERCY FAITH ORCHESTRA (AND CHORUS).FOUR OF THEM ARE ON THIS ONE CD ("RHYTHM OF THE FALLING RAIN", "ALL ALONE AM I", "UP ON THE ROOF" & "THEMES FOR YOUNG LOVERS"). I DIDN'T REALIZE TILL THEN JUST HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT PERCY FAITH HAD ON EASY LISTENING MUSIC.

This is a master of easy listening. The formula is "get a selection of now sound from the 60s" + "make personal well crafted arrangements". Mr.Faith was a master in violin-based arrangements and he was particularly inspired here on this 60s album. "Go away Little Girl" by Carole King and the title song by Faith himself are particularly pleasant tracks. This was music from my teens and this has been music I have listened to up to now.

"Wrightson, Hunt & Percy Faith ~ days of long ago".......2003-07-02

A collection of probably some of the most remembered and favorite melodies of our time "A Night with Jerome Kern/A Night with Sigmund Romberg", featuring Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt with Percy Faith and his Orchestra. Class, quality and outstanding performances overflow with arrangements by the "Percy Faith Touch", that always came from the baton of Maestro Faith.

Entire CD has stand outs with many highlights ~ "MAKE BELIEVE", "LONG AGO (AND FAR AWAY)", "WHY DO I LOVE YOU" and "OL' MAN RIVER" lyric interpretation letter perfect with Earl Wrightson hitting notes coming from the bottom of his toes, one of the best I've ever heard.

Less we not forget "THE DESERT SONG", "STOUT HEARTED MEN", "SERENADE", "ONE ALONE", "THE RIFF SONG" and "WHEN I GROW TOO OLD TO DREAM" takes me back to the days of open air theater at the St. Louis Muny Opera in Forest Park, those days of live entertainment ~ and the Muny is still going strong today.

If you want to relive those days of long ago, then this has your name on it. Percy Faith's arrangements are as always, captivating with enchantment ~ and this is as it should be with Kern & Romberg tunes ~ gotta love it!

Bravo! But where is "Night with Rudolf Friml"?.......2003-01-02

I have thoroughly enjoyed listeneing to these albums again after so many years! It is great to finally have them on CD! The beautiful melodies -- such as Serenade from 'The Student Prince' -- are timeless and the robust masculine voice of Earl Wrightson is magnificent! (I also happen to be a big fan of both Percy Faith and Lois Hunt.)

However, as much as I enjoyed these two LP's when they were released, my favorite of Faith's "Night with ..." trilogy was the as-yet-unreleased-on-CD "Night with Rudolf Friml" -- also with Earl Wrightson and Lois Hunt. To this day, Earl Wrightson remains my all-time favorite baritone, and his stunningly powerful and rousing rendition of "Song of the Vagabonds" is absolutely my favorite vocal track of all time. Please, Collectables -- or some other company -- please release this marvelous album on CD soon!

Not the best.......2002-04-10

Failing to read the review, I bought this Percy Faith CD thinking it was an instrumental. Needless to say, I'm a little disappointed.

Percy Faith - The Accompanist; Earl Wrightson Resurrected.......2001-11-03

In this stereo CD of two 1959 albums "A Night With Jerome Kern" and a "Night With Sigmund Romberg" we have albums of songs which showcase Earl Wrightson's outstandingly virile voice and that of his wife Lois Hunt eventhough the CD is headlined by Percy Faith.

Whilst Percy Faith was first and foremost an orchestra leader who presented melodies unadorned by voices and who could sell concerts and records under his own name, not enough has been made of his abilty to arrange and conduct an orchestra in support of solo singers. My favourite examples were Johnny Mathis' first Christmas album in the mid 60's (stereo) and an album of duets by Shirley Jones and her husband Jack Cassidy in the mid 50's (mono).

How ever this double album CD now takes their place as my favourite example of Percy Faith the accompanist. Mr Faith worships a good melody and he loves translating the emotional content of the lyrics into musical language.

As in all such Percy Faith efforts, the orchestra is one of the soloists. The orchestrations 'tag' the emotional tenor of the song by setting beautiful introductions particularly in the Kern melodies and then underpinning the vocal quality and style of the singers and then providing a bridge between the verses.
I cannot think of a single conductor who can use tempi to convey emotional pain, longing and joy with such conviction.
The arrangements and the orchestrations are exquisite. Whilst Mr Faith was known as a 'strings' exponent, his use of the woodwinds, percussion and subdued brass are heart-wrenchingly lush despite some of the harshness of the recording technique of the early stereo. It is joy to hear the orchestra behind the two singers.

Earl Wrightson is a superb, rich baritone who can deliver every song beautifully by singing it straight and producing emotion through his phrasing, modulation and projection. In a world which worships tenors who 'yelp', it is instructive to hear how spine-tingling and nuanced a performance, a powerhouse baritone can produce through technique and artistry.
His standouts are 'The Song Is You', 'They Didn't Believe Me'; 'Look For The Silver Lining' (absolutely transformed out of mawkishness by Mr Wrightson's straightforward interpretation) and 'Can I Forget You'
. His version of "Old Man River" is shattering showing that he has both bass notes and thrilling high notes - it is an incomparable rendering.
All singers know that Kern melodies, with their murderous key changes and bridges, can be a potential graveyard of any inspiring singer. Mr Wrightson negotitates them with style.

Mr Wrightson's wife, Lois Hunt is equally as assured and as vocally dynamic. The recording technique of the time treats her a little harshly (whilst it seems to suit the Wrighson voice) but she delivers both melody and lyric superbly.

The Sigmund Romberg tunes are handled beautifully by all three artists and this recording is a superb celebration of what was then the dying genre of the operetta. Interestingly the "Desert Song" , originally a duet is sung as a Wrightson solo whilst the Student Prince "Serenade" usually sung as a male solo with male chorus is sung as a duet. Wrightson produces with Percy Faith stirring versions of the "march" items - "The Riff Song" and "Stout Hearted Men" - without the prerequisite male chorus. The song lyrics tend to tie the songs to their original contexts and thus to some extent, the Romberg songs do not have the deathless universality of the Kern songs.
