I don't know what you expect from a dreaded guy showing his bare foot on the cover, but that picture is meant to fool you. This is the most honest& best album I have played over the air in 2004. The more times you listen to this cd all the way through, the more you'll be convinced this man is put here just to help you see. Very rarely you'll find such an artist at his peak, and virtually unknown. Very proud to say my listeners request Michael Franti regularly. Every flower has a right to be bloomin :) Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars A Trip Down "Memory Lane".......2005-04-06

This CD takes me back to the early 1980's when I first re discovered Bluegrass music.
I grew up on Bluegrass and Traditional Country (we just all threw it in one bag and called it "Country music" in our house).
By 1980, Country Music had gone so far over the line that much of it didn't even resemble Country, and about that time a new radio station came on the air here in West Virginia (WZTQ in Hurricane)and they played the traditional music I had grown up with. At the time, I was a teen with a desire to become a D. J,> (what we call "radio personalities" today), so I would hang out at the studios of the station, and discovered many of the Bluegrass groups of that second generation, Front Porch String Band being one of them. I remember that station played "IF Youre Ever In Oklahoma" (the first track on this wonderful CD) a lot. The second track in another song that the melody alone just sends chills up my spine, "Hearts Against The Wind". The CD goes on from there with one wonderful tune after another: "Living In A Country World", "The Singer" and a wonderful new arrangement of the late Roy Acuff's classic Wabash Cannonball".
I know I'm leaving some great tunes out of this review, but let me say that Claire Lynch (who later went on to be one of the three best female singers in Bluegrass, the other two being Rhonda Vincent and Alison Krauss)in is fine form here and her voise alone is worth the price of this CD. I am convinced that this lady could sing the phone book and make it sound great.
Buy this CD. If you like Bluegrass, or like real Country Music, you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Front Porch Magic.......2004-03-30

Claire Lynch and her bandmates made a little magic on these tracks, recorded before the days of Female Bluegrass Superstar vocalists. Although, as other reviewers mention, Claire is the "star" of this show, the FPSB mates compliment her perfectly and this is very much a team or band album. There's not a bad cut on the CD, but the highlights are transcendant moments of recorded bluegrass history. Claire sings "Go My Way" with a poignant style that makes Lightfoot's version (and a later recorded version by Tony Rice) seem pale by comparison. Larry Lynch's mandolin has been accurately described as "Sam Bush-like", no small compliment, esp at a time when Chris Thile was a mere gleam in his father's eye. The arrangement of the icon Wabash Cannonball makes anything the great Roy Acuff did with the tune seem like child's play. The song shifts around in different keys - modulating through extended instrumental sequences in a minor key owing more to David Grisman's Dawg music than to any "Grand Ol' Opry" rendition - but these brilliant instrumental excursions form a mere framework on which to hang the centerpiece: Claire Lynch's luxurious vocals. On the final chorus the rest of the FPSB voices come in to complement Mrs. Lynch's angelic lead .... with an effect that still raises the hairs on the back of my neck after hundreds of listens.

I was riding to a Bluegrass Festival a few months ago with a gentleman who is well-versed in "who's who" in Bluegrass. As we rode along the sounds of new and time-honored "classics" came across my CD player: the Osborne Brothers, Bill Monroe, Alison Krauss, Flatt and Scruggs. Then I put on this under-appreciated gem. "Who's THAT!!!!????" I was asked.

I then acquainted the gentleman with one of the best sounds going - the Claire Lynch led Front Porch String Band. I hope you may be similarly acquainted.

Well.... what are you waiting for?

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Claire Lynch fans.......2002-08-23

I bought this cd off of the other reccomendations listed. I've only had the cd for a week and I already love it. If you love Claire Lynch you can't go wrong with this cd. Larry Lynch's voice is also awesome as are all of the strings (perfectly played.) Buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars The album that turned me on to bluegrass (in 1981).......2002-07-29

My introduction to bluegrass was via Emmylou's brilliant Roses in the snow, but for a while I regarded it as a novelty. Eventually, I decided to explore further and this was the one that really made me take bluegrass seriously. During the eighties, I played it countless times and it was one of my most-played vinyl albums. I was pleased to be able to upgrade it to CD, on which medium it sounds better than ever (especially as my LP was so worn). Although I don't play it as often these days, it is still one of my favorite bluegrass albums.

Lead singer Claire Lynch has a lovely voice, very similar to Emmylou (probably why I bought it back in 1981), but as Emmylou's music is so different from Claire's (Roses in the snow aside), it's not a problem. Perhaps because this is a band album rather than a Claire solo album, there are a lot of chances for the musicians to shine, although ultimately it is Claire's voice that is the finest instrument of all. Yet, those instrumental breaks are great - at a time when I was a mere bluegrass novice, they taught me what gives bluegrass it's identity.

The songs are a mixture of originals and covers. The covers include If you're ever in Oklahoma (J J Cale), Go my way (Gordon Lightfoot) and Wabash Cannonball (Roy Acuff). The originals include Hills of Alabam, later covered by Kathy Mattea on her Willow in the wind album, with Claire singing backup. The overall feel of the album is upbeat but restrained, so it's quite a mellow album really. Perhaps they could have really cut loose, but it wouldn't have improved it any.

Claire has recorded several excellent albums since this one (with and without the band, although her solo albums usually feature band members). While the quality of Claire's albums now makes it difficult to say which is best, this is still a strong contender for that title. Not that I care - in my mind, Claire is the Queen of Bluegrass although the competition is much hotter these days.

If you like the bluegrass music of Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent or Dolly Parton, give Claire a try. They often sing on each other's records these days (look at the credits for Dolly's Grass is Blue) so they are not really competitors. Between them, they are setting the standard for those that follow.

4 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2001-12-13

I bought this album when it first came out and still find it to be among the more memorable bluegrass efforts I own. All the vocals are effortlessly beautiful and the bluegrass chops are evident throughout. It is relatively laid back but it is also uniquely moving with several of the tunes standing out as timeless favorites. If you feast on bluegrass along the lines of Allison Krauss or Freyda Epstein / Trapezoid, this is definitely of similar caliber.

An elder statesman of Piedmont blues, John Jackson didn't get much exposure outside of his home state of Virginia until the folk revival of the 1960s swept him up. His music is an appealing mix of Piedmont-style blues, Appalachian folk, and an assortment of dance music; he moves from the ballad of "Railroad Bill" to the traditional "C.C. Rider" to the pensive "Louisiana Blues" to the devotional "When He Calls Me." The most striking track on this album, though, is "Death Don't Have No Mercy," which starts off dark and melancholy and progresses to downright scary. It's all, indeed, the sort of thing one could easily imagine hearing on the front porch of a southeastern house, complete with the Appalachian chain in the background. --Genevieve Williams

    5 out of 5 stars A true national treasure.......2002-01-25

John Jackson was a true American treasure. Above all...he was a gentleman. His music and the impact he had on all who were fortunate enough to ever meet him will live on.

5 out of 5 stars The music he makes,,and the man who makes it are both great!.......2000-11-20

I grew up in Fairfax Station, Va. and became acquainted with John Jackson thru St. Mary's Catholic Church(Clara Barton began the Red Cross there), where he dug graves by hand with shovel and pick in the 60's and 70's. Though the Amoco station at Butts Corner, Va. where John was "discovered" is no longer there I can still "see" it. I'll always remember and cherish John for an act of kindness that shows the person that he is, when my Mother, Anne Finegan, died in 1976, at the request of my Family, John came out of retirement to dig her grave at St. Mary's out of respect for her and as a tribute to her life. The beauty of his music comes from inside a kind and gentle man with a huge heart and a tremendous God-given talent. "Front Porch Blues" is both a triumph and an absolute joy to listen to, check out "Fairfax Station Rag"!

4 out of 5 stars A great collection from a master of the Piedmont Blues.......1999-12-14

John has been and continues to be the master of the Piedmont Blues. Age has done nothing to dim his voice or slow his fingers. I had the pleasure of performing with John in Warrenton, Va in Nov '99 and he still continues to amaze. If you are only going to buy one collection of the Piedmont Blues, this should be it.

4 out of 5 stars blues, but also a whole lot more.......1999-07-03

John Jackson is no more a "blues singer" than the late Mississippi John Hurt was. His repertoire has blues in it, of course, but essentially it is based in African-American folk styles current a century ago, before blues as such even existed. It also shows the influence of white vernacular music; even if Jackson didn't tell you as much, you'd know he grew up listening to Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family, and the Delmore Brothers. On this welcome new recording Jackson's gruffer voice is the only indication that he's older than he was when he recorded those great Arhoolie albums in the 1960s, soon after folklorist Charles Perdue happened on him as he was playing guitar at a Fairfax, Virginia, Amoco station in 1964. Jackson is still playing well, and he still has a fine ear for a good song, everything from the traditional black outlaw ballad "Railroad Bill" to church and gospel tunes (including the obscure but delightful "The Devil He Wore a Hickory Shoe") to rags to 1920s-era country blues. Like John Hurt, John Jackson is a performer whose sheer amiability matches his considerable musical talent. Hearing him just plain makes you feel good.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars not stunning.......2007-04-01

This CD had a few good moments but it just seems limited, somehow. I enjoyed watching the singer on the "Rock Star" show, and was disappointed when she was voted off. I was keen to hear her own work, and so I bought this album. It's disappointing though. Maybe the song about women getting drunk put me off? The album as a whole didn't shine though, and I'm afraid I can't really recommend it to anyone. Sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Rock Star INXS' Butterfly Girl shines on solo CD.......2006-02-06

Heather Luttrell only lasted till the 4th week on Rock Star INXS, but her amazing version of Somebody to Love on Week 2 made me want to hear more. She obviously wasn't right for INXS, but doing her own thing, she sounds super. Her style is part blues, part classic rock, and all great. There's not a bad cut on this album.

4 out of 5 stars Heather Luttrell - not roit for INXS, but just fine on her own.......2006-01-24

Hey, it may well have been a bit of a stretch for Heather Luttrell to be the new front-person for INXS, but that doesn't mean that she is any less talented than any of the singers who finished ahead of her - in fact, her CD may well be the best of the "Rock Star: INXS" contenders (including my favorite, Marty Casey, whose very good CD I just received today). "Grits-n-Pulp" is a ridiculously good alcohol-drenched mellow Country Blues CD, with lots of delicious self-loathing swirled throughout the excellent arrangements like bitter lemon liquor swirled with sweet pecan ice cream. It might not seem like that would be good, but it is - really good.

This music will likely never be on the radio, so you will need to check it out here. There's not a bad song on the CD, but if you want any recommendations, well...
    "Guilty" has beautiful acapella harmonies
"Gentle Mind" is one of the "bigger"-sounding tunes, very nice
"Driving Towards The Moon" is perhaps my favorite - beauty and anguish collide in a delightful way

I guess that's enough for now. If you like excellent, passionate Country-tinged Blues, there's a very good chance that you will like "Grits-n-Pulp".

1 out of 5 stars Did I get sent the wrong CD?.......2005-12-06

I am not sure what CD everyone else is listening to but mine is terrible. At times it sounds like the musicians are playing different tunes at the same time. Heather does have great vocals. However, the songs are written with poor lyrics and sound lame. The recording is horrible. The songs do not sound mixed, but rather just all played together (as if they were sitting in a bar playing live). Maybe with better production it would sound better but not this time.

5 out of 5 stars It's just the beginning for Heather Luttrell.......2005-10-20

She may not be replacing Michael Hutchence as the new lead singer of INXS, but with her new album, Grits n' Pulp Heather Luttrell makes it pretty clear that we haven't heard the last of her yet.

As one of the fifteen contestants on Rock Star: INXS, this summer's rock `n' roll reality show, Heather was sent home when illness weakened her performance. Heather released her new album while some of her former housemates were still competing for a place in INXS. That move in itself shows Heather's strength and determination-and after listening to her first post-Rock Star album, it's clear that that strength and determination are going to pay off for her in the end.

On Grits n' Pulp, Heather lets her real Southern-girl roots show. The album opens with a bluesy a cappella cover of Randy Newman's "Guilty" that gave me chills. And that's only the beginning. Throughout the rest of the album, Heather's powerful voice never falters, mixing the stripped-down folksiness of Ani Difranco with the strength and soul of old-time rhythm-and-blues. Here's one woman who doesn't need an overpowering band or a celebrity stylist to make her look good. Her voice sells itself. From rockin' and fun to soulful and contemplative, Heather's personality-as well as her amazing talent-always shines through.

Be sure to pick up your very own copy of the album. It's one you won't want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars The Front Porch Swing Band.......2007-05-20

"Lines and Traces" the 1991 album by the Front Porch Swing Band is a beautiful collection of bluegrass tunes with Claire Lynch's clear and compelling voice on lead vocal in most of the songs performed here. A must have for all bluegrass enthusuiasts.

5 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from Claire and the band.......2004-03-11

Claire Lynch has long been my favorite bluegrass singer and this yet another example of her brilliance. Mostly, she records under her own name but sometimes she records as a member of the Front porch string band (as on this album), although her band musicians often appear on her solo albums anyway. The other band members - Larry Lynch (husband, multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist), Andy Meginniss (vocalist) and Herb Trotman (banjo and guitar) provide excellent support.

The set opens with the traditional Hard times, sung in a traditional style adapted to bluegrass. Fans of Dolly Parton may recognize this song because Dolly re-interpreted the song, called it Hush-a-bye hard times and included it on her 9 to 5 album in 1981. The two versions of the song are very different but excellent in their own way. Another wonderful version can be found on Appalachian journey, a curious but fascinating album of classical music with country influences.

Several of the other songs are also covers but none are especially well known. There's an instrumental medley of three Bill Emerson tunes (the medley is titled New York to Dixie), a Michael Johnson song (In your eyes) and a Delmore brothers song (Will you be lonesome too).

Elsewhere, Kennesaw line tells the true story of a Confederate soldier. Train songs remain popular despite their peak years being long gone. One is included here - How much does it cost to ride this train.

If you enjoy modern bluegrass, you'll love this. Claire does not get the same attention that is lavished on Alison Krauss or Rhonda Vincent, two other wonderful bluegrass ladies, but if you enjoy their music you'll surely like Claire too.

4 out of 5 stars It's "String Band" not "Swing Band".......2003-03-24

Don't buy this if you were looking for "swing". Somehow this band has been misspelled here and on some Internet CD databases.

This is bluegrass, and very good bluegreass at that. Claire Lynch has had a great solo career after leaving this band, and her vocals are the best reasons to buy it. The playing is sound, though not as flashy as some of the other BG bands out there. But it is solid, and you can hear Claire do her stuff which is all the reason you need.

    4 out of 5 stars good effort.......2002-09-07

They have a good sound here but not as good as their first album. The inside credits do give a good biography. If you are trying to decide which FPSB album to purchase first buy their original one first. In my opinion this has more of a country sound than bluegrass. Overall this is not a disappointing CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Neglected Classic.......2000-06-12

What a shame there is no customer review for this CD, so here is one. Perhaps this album is neglected because it is not identified as a Claire Lynch album. She is the main vocalist here, along with husband Larry Lynch. Claire is now one of the true geniuses of bluegrass, but this earlier album also consistently rises to the top of our collection. The song "Where Dear Friends Will Never Part" is worth owning the CD, and was indeed the reason I originally bought it. But the whole album is a gem. Claire Lynch simply has one of the greatest voices currently singing American music.

    5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2003-02-26

dont get me wrong i grew up on dixie, and over the james is one of the best albums to date, but this blew everything else away.
I think avail has grown into something amazing, and i think this is their strongest album out.

    5 out of 5 stars i guess i was that guy.......2003-01-29

i was wrong, everyone get this album. i was a big naysayer, huge, and it still grew on me. go see them live too, you seriously owe it to yourself.

5 out of 5 stars the boys from VA are back and better than ever.......2003-01-14

If you know anything about this band, you should know that they are a hard hitting hardcore band from richmond virginia. Their previous 5 albums (excluding live releases) have all had the same qualities- intense heart felt lyrics, raw/polished vocals, fast guitars and hard drum hitting and breakdowns. This album is no different. They have kept their distinct style while trying a few more things musically, like the melodic sound on track 5, Gravel to Dirt, or the violin and slide guitar on some tracks. Their energy is apparent, and there is no wonder as to why these hardcore sweethearts put on such a great live performance, with singer Tim Barry singing live, almost better than the studio versions of most songs. If you get this album, and were a fan of Dixie, Satiate and the rest, then you will *NOT* be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Keep them coming.......2003-01-06

Another excellent album from the east coast punk band we all know as Avail. This album is the 5th from Avail that I have added to my collection and it impressed me as much or more than "4am friday" and "Over the James". As per their usual standards, the Lyrics are strong and thought prevoking and the Band plays their instruments with an orginization not often found in punk bands.

This is a CD that all people will enjoy, although they may enjoy it for different reasons than I did. Everyone, go out and BUY this CD NOW.

    5 out of 5 stars It rocks!.......2002-11-16

Fans of AVAIL will not be dissapointed with this newest record as it's just as rockin as Over The James or 4am Friday. These guys do melodic hardcore better than anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Soul Sisters to the Rescue!.......2001-08-22

This album is a powerhouse of female strength and spirit! If you're down, this will get you back up and on your way. When you listen to these women sing, you can feel their strength, experience, love and faith ring out from every note. These timeless songs are as inspirational today as they were years ago. As a music lover and seeker of truth, beauty, and inspiration, I highly recommend this album.

    4 out of 5 stars Spiritually Moving.......2001-03-09

I particularly like "Good News, The Chariots Coming", "Lay Down Body", "Take Me To The River" and "Down The Line". The harmonies and Lead vocals are very moving. Good News is the song I want sung or played at my funeral if or when I should ever pass away. Thank you.
