Amazon.com essential recording
There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

Musical Pleasure.......2007-07-03
I enjoy all of this music, listening frequently. Some not original cast members, so less than 5 star. Product exactly as advertised.
The Premiere Collection.......2007-01-17
My sister had this and it got destroyed. She wanted an other, This was the only place I have found it!! Very hard to find! I have been to every music store in my area. She loved it!! And was so happy to have it again. Anyone who loves Andrew Lloyd Webber will love this. As it has many songs from some of his most famous plays with the original cast. Great item.
beautiful.......2006-12-21
This CD is a great compilation of some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's hits. If you are just looking for a "quick fix" for your Broadway craving, this is a great value.
Fair Album with 1 starlight and 0 aspects.......2004-07-09
I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.
Superb collection.......2003-08-11
... It is a collection of the best of ALW's creative efforts, and a collection of great performances. Anyone who loves "Broadway" should have this disk in their collection.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

A minor genre classic.......2004-10-30
I picked up on Sunday's Best when I was about 21, a little more than a year before this LP came out. As of late 2004, five years later, I doubt the band has done anything in over two years. The production and hooks on this LP are tight, and the vocals are awesome - a cross between Thom Yorke and Jim Adkins (of J.E.W.) if you can picture that. One word of advice: don't open your debut album with a song that most people will take for "Don't Stand So Close To Me," by The Police.
almost there.......2002-06-03
I must admit that this cd is much better than I anticipated but wasn't quite at the 5 star level. This cd is great for anyone into the emo/indie rock scene. It sounds kind of like Get Up Kids meets Weakerthans. It took me two listens before I connected with #6(When is Pearl Harbor Day?) and a few listens more before I completely fell in love with the rest of the album. He has an amazing voice and each song sounds completely unique from the previous one. My only complaint is that the melody and words to the verses are awesome but they build up to a very basic chorus line that is repeated a few times to fill the chorus.
Pure Greatness.......2002-04-23
This cd was wonderful, the hidden track totally suprised me, i had no idea how awesome they were until now. Truly recommend buying this, i cant wait for their next one to come out...its going ot be wonderful!!!
one of 2000's best albums...........2001-07-27
one of my favorite albums of 2000. if you like rainer maria you'll love these guys... super catchy, but also really rocken. sunday's best's lyrics are wonderful: "i hate nostalgia / it trys to hard / to remember only the easy parts." and the hidden track shows just how great these guys are as instrumentalists... do yourself a favor and don't pass this cd up.
Hell yeah...........2001-03-13
Stumbled across this band just by chance, and I'm really glad that I did...these guys are sweet. I agree with one of the other reviewers that this stuff is super-catchy, but Sunday's Best manages to escape the pitfall of catchy tracks that suck after the fifth time you listen to them. This is good stuff, lyrically and musically. Like J.E.W.? You'll definitely dig this one.

Customer Reviews:
The Amazing Rhythm Aces by any other name...........2002-01-09
If, like me, you feel that the Amazing Rhythm Aces haven't recorded enough albums, this is for you. Russell Smith was the main sound of the ARA so the tracks on this album have an instant familiarity and accessibility while retaining the variety for which the ARA were famous.
Russell's voice lends itself well to songs of unrequited love and Your Eyes and The Boy Next Door are fine examples. To counter this Sunday Best, with it's variations on the title (act my Sunday Best; wearing Sunday Best; made my Sunday Best) is a song of requited love. As soon as he mentions the yellow sun dress with 32 buttons down the middle you know he'll remember that Sunday Best.
Blue Collar Blues and American Tragedy cover the country standards of futures blighted by redundancy and war, the latter with it's Vietnam references showing how long ago these track were originally released.
Southern Music plays as a standard piece of Southern blues, until you realise that he's singing about all the reasons people from the South have not to be sad and celebrate all the good things they have.
With enough musical variety to keep it entertaining for its full 75 minutes, this became my most played record in 2001 as an ideal companion for car journeys and looks set to stay that way for some time yet.

Another great Steak's effort.......2005-08-17
The Swinging Steaks have another winner in their newest release. As with prior releases from this Boston band, vocal harmonies and fine musicianship combine to bring life and energy to songs ranging from mild country to pure Americana. "Good Day" opens the disc with a postive vibe that has been rummaging around in my mind since my first listen. Interesting lyrics, great guitar licks and bristling keyboard play lift this record. If you enjoy roots rock and roll, give this record a listen. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
A good shot at a 'Best Of' Album........2006-01-16
I was pleasently surprised at this CD. The singers were all pretty good, and the music was great. My only complaint is with the 'Phantom of the Opera' tracks. "Christine" does fine on the title song and 'All I Ask of You', but on 'Wishing Your Were Somehow Here Again', she falls a little short of a good preformance.
The thing that impresses me the most on this CD are the 'Jesus Christ Superstar' tracks. They all sounded superb, and I prefer them to my original broadway cast soundtrack.
I was dissappointed that they only chose two songs from 'Cats', one of Lloyd Webber's crowning acheivements as a composer. THe show was remarkably successful and is the second longest running show in Broadway history, only topped by 'Phantom'. Also, I felt the songs they chose were a bit...odd. 'Memory', of course, is a given. But why throw 'Mister Mistoffelees' into the mix? Why not the Prolouge,'Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats'?
All in all, I was very impressed with this CD. I give it 4 out of 5 stars, and I recommend it for any fan of Lloyd Webber's music.

Unfortunately, as of this writing, it appears that, after five years, Sunday's Best are dead and gone. I remember the day I unwrapped the promo of their first EP, Where Are You Now, on the living room floor of my college apartment - it doesn't seem like over five years ago. This LP came out in mid-2002, to too little acclaim. They had recently gone through a lineup change, adding a new bassist, and prior to the recording, drummer Tom Ackerman went through some tough drug/marital issues. As usual, it sounds like they've done a bargain-basement job with a really *good* producer - seven to ten days, in and out.
Some of the songs are really there "Beethoven St." and "Salt Mines of Santa Monica," and overall, the lyrics are better than on the first LP, but a few, like "The Try" don't make the crucial timing of their placement (first) on the LP, after repeated listens.
Pitchforkmedia Review.......2002-08-14
For those of you quick to jump to conclusions, I'd like to cut you off and mention straightaway that this album isn't even half as emo as the cover art makes it look. The guitars rarely rage, the meters are never odd, and the vocalist never wails like a possum in heat. If I were to label them at all, in fact, I'd just call them a pop band, plain and simple. Popular prefixes like 'power' and 'post' need not apply.
And so it goes that all over The Californian, the second full-length from the L.A.-based four-piece Sunday's Best, the guitars chime melodically, the vocalist never yells at you, and a guy known as James Tweedy (no relation) studiously offers up utilitarian basslines with a minimum of flash. The funny thing about all this is that Sunday's Best used to be totally emo, but somewhere between their debut and this album, they seem to have realized (possibly through their own introspectiveness) that they weren't very good at it and would be better off moving in next door to Sloan and the Posies and honing their songcraft.
Critical flippancy aside, the band has undergone a lot of cataclysmic change in their lives between records, including divorce, exiting members, rehab and rough tours, and these life experiences have lent more authenticity to their music. Vocalist Edward Reyes is suddenly a smooth, capable singer with a bit of 70s AM honey in his voice and it suits him, though sometimes the double tracking that's heaped on feels a little overdone. That's hardly the only cue the guys take from the 70s, though, as the chorused guitars that crop up frequently are quick to remind.
Like most pop bands with guitars, Sunday's Best are at their most affecting when the songs are trimmed of excess fat and drive the melody straight home. Opener "The Try" is nicely arranged, with several contrasting rhythmic feels, each of which appropriately support the lead material they're given. Drummer Thomas Ackerman and co-producer Tony Lash (ex-Heatmiser, frontman for No. 2) keep the sound crisp and clear and are always sure to have Reyes' voice up front and center-- an important move, as his tenor is easily the most distinctive element within the band.
Ian Moreno's lead guitar parts play a nice second fiddle to the vocals throughout the album, never intruding on Reyes' space, but adding a little more interest to the backgrounds. Yet, despite the musical subtleties present, it's a shame that the band hasn't made more attempts to broaden their overall sound, as the sonic uniformity of The Californian begins to wear as it progresses. "If We Had It Made," with its surprising, tasteful incorporation of bells into the arrangement, hints at something more expansive in the band's future.
If Reyes is the band's focal point, it certainly helps that his lyrics (co-written with Ackerman) aren't half bad. The lightly rocking "Our Left Coast Ambitions" is one of the record's best tracks, featuring sarcastic calls of "Hooray for Hollywood!" and a lead guitar part with some unusual volume and crunch, while "Beethoven St." is straightforward and unapologetically nostalgic for the street Reyes grew up on. Part of what makes "Beethoven St." work is that the feeling of nostalgia is conveyed through imagery, rather than through the whiny "I wish things were the way they were"-isms that too many songwriters get bogged down with.
Sunday's Best stretches out the structure of the final song, "Los Feliz Arms," utilizing loud/soft dynamics and some guitar heroics likely left over from their early days, but keeping it reigned in enough that you don't forget it's a pop song. But that, of course, is one of The Californian's primary shortcomings: it's just a bit too polite. I'm not advocating a feedback frenzy or a screaming fit on any of these songs, but the band could stand to be less afraid to let loose and step a bit outside of the ultra-comfortable pop trappings they're now calling home.
Between that and the overall single-hued feel of the album, it's hard to recommend this to just anybody, though fans of guitariffic indie pop should find it pretty easy to swallow. The Californian is a fine, if inessential sophomore effort from a skilled band that could be on the cusp of something great if only they'd let their guard down.

Beats the sophmore jinx.......2002-06-27
This second full-length disc from the So Cal band is a solid, solid album. Their first album (Poised to Break) was dismissed by some as being too derivative, but that claim doesn't hold on this offering, as Edward Reyes and the boys have put together an album with satisfying textures, an edgy almost-live sound, and lyrics that don't play the proverbial cards too close to the chest. This is a mature album from a maturing band.
