Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

What can I say !.......2007-02-15
Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-02
'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.
Another Rutter Keeper!.......2003-02-17
Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.
Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.
Well worth consideration to the church music collection.
worship of god made mostglorius in this cd.......2002-04-30
i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd
Heavenly Music.......2001-10-15
The hymns of SING, YE HEAVENS represent 1500 years of music in the Christian church. Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Eyes.......2007-05-18
Ah yes. Steve Austin and Co. So I guess I should write a positive review. One that is completely driven on the sole fact it is cool to like Today is the Day; a review that should ignore everything else about this band but that fact that Steve Austin's cult following think he is the Second Coming, which in turn results in others liking him...and so on and on and on. I should just accept it, I guess. I mean, if I don't blindly like this band, I must not be "real" with myself, or with other people. Steve Austin's music is just so real and honest, who couldn't like it?
I don't like it. I think this gun wielding, cowardly, rotten hot dog eating (according to the liner notes of Temple of the Morning Star) is nothing but an insecure, hollowed out shell who thinks that his childish, sophomoric, poorly written and realized lyrics are passable because it "comes from somewhere real and honest". You know what I did the first time I heard "TITD"? I laughed. I laughed long and hard. "Real and honest, Real and honest, Real and honest". So what?
If you have heard one of these albums, you have heard them all. You want to know what the highlight of this album and other TITD albums is? Not Steve Austin. Dailor kills on this one. Elrod is an amazing drummer as well. And for whatever reason, Roddy has signed on to do their new one "Axis of Eden". What a clever name. Hey, no one got it Steve-O, evil and the religious right. You are a subtle one. But guess what? Even the brilliance of those three skinsmen, can't overshadow the screeching, inane, over-layered vocals of a guy who says he hates the world, but has a MYSPACE. Who continually puts Satanic images and lyrics in his songs. Yet says Jesus is one of his heroes on his MYSPACE. Are you kidding me Steve Austin? MYSPACE? How many friend requests have you received and given out in the past month? Steve, you are so evil, how can Jesus be your hero...your fans are going to hang you Steve. Ha, ha, ha.
You want to know why I haven't talked about the content of his songs? Simple, no one else does, even if they like it. Go read reviews on AMAZON, or anywhere else on the internet, all you will read is how dark and depressing this stuff is; how you will want to kill yourself. Hey, TITD fans, no one is stopping you...just go do it. Austin, you obviously are miserable...take a flying leap.
Oh, but Steven is so uncompromising. Right, which is why he has worked with the likes of Slipknot, perhaps the biggest hypocrites and liars in all of metal. Steven, if you have trouble making money, just go play bass on Britney Spears album; you've already lost all credibility. You want uncompromising? Meshuggah is probably the most uncompromising metal band you will ever hear. How about Converge? They pummel Today is the Day. And those of you who right now are about to have the thought pop into your head "Today is the Day's influence is undeniable, they paved the way...blah, blah, blah" when the taught surpasses the teacher, the teacher becomes void. You want to know the most influential band in metal music ever, who to this day arguably could out play bands that followed in their path? Death. Chuck Schuldiner, simply put, is THE true front man. An uncompromising visionary who could out play, out write, and out scream the pitiful Austin. Schuldiner signed talented musicians to compliment his immense talent. You do the math.
You want to hear a truly dark and suffocating album? Godflesh's "Streetcleaner" impales this tripe. It is a great album, with feelings and emotions that can only be described as dark and disturbing. Austin's music is empty, void, talent-less, stupid. He has to sign on far superior musicians from album to album just to hide the fact that he can't play the guitar. And he has to layer his screaming vocals to hide the fact that, really, they are weak and flaccid.
That enough from me. Your clicks of "review was not helpful" only prove me right. While your leader continues to hide.
If Perry Farrell Worshipped Satan............2007-02-09
This was an interesting one for me, a very heavy and original metal album with an unusual and very interesting vocal style that really set them apart from some of the other so-called "extreme metal" bands out there.
Today Is The Day play a pseudo-experimental hardcore- and death- influenced style of very heavy and nihilistic music with a vocal style that is quite epic-sounding and cool....basically, this sounds like what would happen if Jane's Addiction decided to embrace the black-metal style of Venom or Deicide. The addition of some enhancements to the vocals make them stand out in the mix; a caterwauling, shrieking vortex of auditory fury. The sardonic black humor of the song titles and lyrics and the twisted artwork of the album is very cool as well. Recommended, but may induce fits of road rage while driving....
this album KILLS.......2006-12-12
heavy as hell, evil as it gets, rockin' headbanging madness from start to finish. this is raw and you can just feel the energy of every song, if you don't have this look into getting it. if you're not already a TITD fan, give them a few more listens and you'll see why everyone loves them so much.
i got into them in '98 with "temple." It did take a few listens to "get it" though, so give it a chance. once you see what they are all about you'll probably want all of their stuff, so start saving now because a lot of it's out of print.
Wow.......2006-03-11
This is a very interesting Cd. Though it is not for everyone, fans of extereme metal will love it. If I had one complaint, it's that most of the songs are too short, but the music is still very good.
RAW!.......2004-06-11
Real anger. Real hatred. Real songs. Today Is The Day absorb negative energy and spit it back in your face with the subtlety of the world's end. This will be the funeral march for the masses.

Unsung Masterpiece.......2007-06-23
I liked this album when it first came out-saw them a few times live-pretty intense-okay, nice and all but recently, for a cross-country trip, I loaded this(and Sadness Will Prevail-also another amazing album) into the i-pod and was completely blown away!! So intense! So ahead of it's time! simply stunning!
Pivotal Album.......2007-03-17
Marking TDITD's emergence as a force to be reckoned with, Temple Of The Morning Star also seems to have been an album born of Steve Austen's life trials. The liner notes to this reissue are compelling reading, and inspirational. Hats off to anyone who can muster the courage and wherewithall to make music, or art of any form, in EXACTLY the way they personally see it, without lowering to common denominators, and with the determination and hope that others will eventually enjoy your labors. The struggle to make your art accessible to others, even in this day and age, is what separates the "artists" from the legends. Having been a clear influence and sounding board for commercially successful bands such as Mastadon and Lamb of God, Today Is The Day deserves and often gets kudos from many people in the tight-knit little circle of musicians who resist the whole hardcore-numetal-thrash-grind-whatever tags imposed by label-obsessed media conglomerates. Austin and Co. are the real deal, and when you hear the music on any album prior to, including, and following Temple, you hear the passions of people who think a little differently from most. And that's why we love them.
The Evil that Exists In All of Us.......2006-10-22
Not alot gives me hope, but the fact that Mastodon are becoming metal legends does reveal a bit of optimism in my otherwise dreary outlook. Alot of more abrasive acts have recieved unlikely courtships from the mainstream...Opeth is an international sensation, Dimmu Borgir pulled off a mainstage gig at Ozzfest '04, and Lamb of God are being heralded as the "Saviours of American Metal" by bullhorn toters from coast to coast. But these success stories, in my metallic opinion, were all semi-logical. Mastodon's both critical and fan adoration is surprising because they have emerged from that crushingly heavy corner of extreme metal that leaves little room for sentimentality or linear song patterns...they are extreme; rooted in doom, death, and grind. But doom, death, and grind acts don't get signed to Warner Brothers and become Pitchfork Media favorites...Mastodon had to possess something else. Mastodon are where they are, if you ask me, because their stellar rhythm section is still adhering to that cerebral eerieness that they picked up when they were ordained as ministers of darkness under the heavy hand of THE REVEREND STEVE AUSTIN, mastermind of Today is the Day and the only musician I can think of who genuinely invokes pure earthbound evil.
Granted, Kelliher and Dailor of Mastodon were picked up by Austin for the Today is the Day album following "Temple of the Morningstar". But it is on this prior album that the misanthropic aesthetic of future TITD endeavors were solidified. It opens with it's namesake track, a flowing accoustic piece that is akin to a hymn beginning this evil sermon. The listener is indoctrinated by the repeated passage, "I can't be what you want me to be...I am DEAD". And with that the thesis statement is made; welcome to the Temple, prepare for the ritual ablutions and the living sacrifices. Prepare yourself for audio-terrorism.
Uber-explicit Satan references or gorey subject matter are staples of evil metal music. And while "Temple of the Morning Star" has traces of each it presents them in such a matter of fact and realist manner that it relegates the Satan and gore imagery of black and death metal to mere novelty. One cannot experience the evil inherent in Steve Austin in the detached manner that they might Cannibal Corpse or even, what the heck, Mayhem. No no...this is the evil that the evening news scratches the surface of; this is the evil that makes us lock our doors at night; this is the evil that exists in all of us. Steve Austin, with Today is the Day, brings painfully close the thoughts which we are all capable of making but from which we hide.
Explicit images of true sexual carnage; self-mutilation; self-hate; the desire for death; feelings of immense lonliness and alienation...this is the mantra espoused from the "Temple of the Morning Star". Lyrics hardly ever make me quiver beneath the blankets, but the shrieks of "Why hold back? Kill yourself, take the blade, do it clean" in "Kill Yourself" produce goosebumps on my metal-worn skin. Same goes for the unrepeatable (on Amazon) imagery produced on "Pinnacle" and "Hermaphrodite". Here we have Austin taking that quiet and unacknowledged voice in all of us that acknowledges evil and amplifying it to a point where we cannot ignore it.
The sound? Well, I have never been comfortable classifying TITD as a heavy metal band. To me they are audio-terror, a disturbance of one's inner-peace, an experiment in the effect sound can have on the equilibrium of the listener. Steve Austin uses negative aesthetics as his canvas. The drums, bass, and guitar are all metal; but they take a backseat to the overall picture which is one of pure unease -- guiding this flaming chariot are Steve Austin's tortured and mutilated vocals: the most powerful instrument on the record.
Now Mastodon is very much a metal band...but I feel they owe the composition of their sound more to Today is the Day than anyone. Even Kellier and Dailor's previous band Lethargy is not as close to their current sound as TITD is. This is because The Reverend Steve Austin reveals to those who are attentive what they might have thought impossible. The ability to use human psychology and play upon the emotions of the audience to truly define heavy. Go back and listen Mastodon's first recording the "Lifesblood" EP. The samples, the build-ups, the claustrophobia and fullness of the entire experience...it is almost like listening to a Today is the Day album from the same era.
So Satan bless Relapse Records for re-releasing this remastered version of this religiously required recording. The liner notes are a necessary counterpart to complete the verses "Temple of the Morning Star". Suddenly that realness of Steve Austin is, well, realer. With Today is the Day Austin brings the introvert into extroverted form. It is pure nihilism looking outward and not hesitating to reflect what it sees and feels in a brutally honest way. But what is truly horror-inducing about "Temple of the Morning Star" is that this is not the voice of a hermit staring disdainfully through his blinds and casting aspersions onto the world. Rather this is the voice of that nihilistic hermit that dwells in a realm of your soul that you'd rather forget was there. But we all possess it. The grand triumph of this album is that it makes the listener admit that evil dwells within each and every one of us. By suppressing that evil the "evils" of this world are allowed to permeate.
Steve Austin, you are what Maynard James Keenan wishes he could be.

Transcendent Beauty.......2004-08-14
I am surprised that no one else has reviewed this album. Most likely it's because it's not terribly well known.
Anyway, this is an absolutely gorgeous sampling of Russian Orthodox Church music. The Italian baroque influences are evident in some of the pieces, but the rich Russian chordal style always comes through.
The voices are transcendent, and truly evoke a sense of the sacred. If you are ever feeling angry, sad, hurt or stressed out, this is the perfect album to put you at ease. Track 19 will take your breath away.

Really good.......2006-02-14
Imagine a more pissed off Jesus Lizard's David Yow being backed by a noisy guitar attack mixed with some prog and industrial stylings and you have Today is the Day. Although I don't care for a lot of the later material, except for In Eyes of God and Temple of the Morning Star, I really recommend Supernova. Rembember this came out around the same time as Korn's debut, and TITD were obviously a far superior, dangerous and groundbreaking band
6 Dementia Review.......2004-03-04
This is a rare album, containing some tracks that TitD still play live today, those being "Black Dahlia" and "6 Dementia Satyr". This record is a prime slab of Amphetamine Reptile Noise Rock, but TitD inject their own fiercely personal and dark edge. The best tracks are the first two, but the price of the disc is worth it for "6 Dementia Satyr" alone. Hell, the whole album could be that one song, and I'd listen to it all the damn time! Literally the best song, next to "Spotting a Unicorn", that TitD has ever done. Essential.
