This collection rightly concentrates on Dale's instrumental exploits as the Jimi Hendrix of surf music. Nineteen sixty-one's "Let's Go Trippin'" was the first real surf instrumental, although the pyrotechnic fretwork of later Dale records is largely absent. Those divebomb runs, reverb drenchings, and impossibly quick picking displays materialize on the next single, "Shake & Stomp," then bloom on the revved-up Middle-Eastern standard "Misirlou." Dale's instrumentals generally fell into two camps: standard-progression frat blasts ("Take It Off," "Night Rider," "Mr. Eliminator") and minor-key Middle-Eastern excursions ("The Wedge," the "Pipeline"-esque "Banzai Wipeout," "The Victor," even "Hava Nagila"--which Jewish purists must have regarded as a hora of Babylon), on which his blistering technique was more likely to find its spotlight Some of his best work is found on "King of the Surf Guitar," a Duane Eddy knockoff with great vocals by the Blossoms garnished by lightning flashes of boss guitar. With all the dazzling axe-work on display (also including a beautiful 1987 duet with Stevie Ray Vaughan on the Chantays' unearthly "Pipeline"), the coolest cut here may be the sole vocal, "Mr. Peppermint Man," on which Dale's rasp oozes a concupiscent slime over the murky tale of a lollipop Lothario who "carries a little sign that says, Have some dessert." Frat rock godhead. --Ken Barnes
Customer Reviews:
Dick Dale was the Pioneer..........2007-05-31
I knew of Dick Dale's more well known tunes, his first "Let's go tripping" & "Misirlou", but the lesser known tracks are quite good. It demonstrates Dale's growth from his first to the "Pipeline" remake. The tracks are pretty much layed out on chronological order, and that's good.
His style is all over this cd, no mistaking it. He's described as "High Energy", and I'm not a fan of harsh surf - some of that here, but all good.
I recommend this cd for surf tune lovers and how surf all started with Dick Dale.
Surf mandolin.......2007-03-05
Dick Dale was left-handed, yet didn't reverse the strings on his guitar. His technique is most accurately described as electrified mandolin that was augmented in 1962 with a portable Fender reverb unit. He is widely considered the father of surf music and there's no denying that those who came after Dale used his music as a starting point.
The Del-Tones never had a hit record in their time; not even "Misrilou" made much of a splash (forgive the pun). That song and Dale enjoyed a sort of notoriety 30 years after the track's release thanks to the film PULP FICTION. It was featured in the movie's opening credits.
In comparison to the surf music that followed in Dick Dale's wake (pun again), his stuff had more energy perhaps, but it just wasn't as good. Dale had a penchant for reworking tunes to his style that probably should have been left alone-- "The Wedge," "Riders In The Sky" and "Hava Nagila" are good examples of this.
The last selection, "Pipeline," features Stevie Ray Vaughan, and was recorded in 1987. RHINO did a fine job of remastering the older sides, and their liner notes are informative. THE BEST OF DICK DALE & HIS DEL-TONES is a collection that will appeal most to surf music completists, and historians of the "California Sound."

A Great Album but not easy listening music . . . ........2007-02-17
I am more partial to metal and hard rock, but Dick Dale is great! The first man to blow up amps and melt guitar picks. He used to start with a handful and flick them off into to audience.
Most of the tracks are a good cross section of the times; has artist as well as studio written and produced tracks. If you are interested in pre-Beach Boys 'surf guitar', this is one to get.
Most people will recognize Banzai Wipeout, but there are some 'studio produced' tracks as well that Dale was forced to record. They are insipid, but a good contrast to the artist's material. Dale wanted to see what he could do with a traditional melody, Hava Nagila has to be experienced . . . .its a great revenge track for all the boring whiny gangsta rap you hear in the summer.
DickDale-King of the Surf Guitar.......2007-01-21
Don't think Dale can play a song the same way twice. Didn't like the selection of songs nor the way they produced.

You Don't Know Dick.......2006-12-31
I've owned this particular CD for years, but I have been kind of reluctant to review it. Y'see, to me, Dick Dale is kind of like the Tao; "the Tao that is spoken about, is not the Tao..." The Dick dale that I speak about is not really Dick Dale.
Dick Dale needs to be experienced in order to be appreciated. I can't explain his music. It's kind of primal, kind of tribal, it's kind of raw and will gnaw at your gut for hours after listening to it. It takes a "different kind" of soul to not only listen to Dick Dale, but appreciate him. This isn't said out of arrogance, it's just said out of a knowing that not everybody will like him just like not everyone likes the Mills Brothers...
Shine little glow worm...
He is truly amazing. I saw him in concert a few times, but I remember one time he was playing so fast and so furious that he broke a guitar string in the middle of a jam session. Big deal you say? What would you say if I told you he changed that guitar string while he was playing it? He had a stage hand hold the guitar, while he changed the string with his left hand and played with his right. You wouldn't even believe how thunderous the applause was after that happened.
Every time I've seen him, I've been "deaf" for days. I've never left a Dick Dale concert without somehow changing in some way. He's like a Shaman, a wizard, an alchemist. He can transform the ordinary into something pure and golden. He is truly one of the world's greatest (and most overlooked) musicians.
He is the King.
So, buy this album. It's a great little starter and after you learn to appreciate this album, go to another, and another, until you'll finally be able to say, "Wow, I really do know Dick..."
Peace and Blessings, children

This is Sonny Boy Williamson II, whose 1940s Mississippi Delta radio broadcasts for King Biscuit Time made him one of the most influential of all blues musicians. A master harmonica player, he created relaxed songs, often humorous, that reminded urban listeners of their country roots. These tracks are from his years at Chess, beginning in the mid-1950s until his death in 1965. His recording bands feature Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, and Robert Lockwood Jr., among others. Perhaps his best-known track here is "Don't Start Me to Talkin' (I'll Tell You Everything I Know)," but his signature sound is evident on every high trill he played. --Robert Gordon
Customer Reviews:
Great harmonica work and a great blues voice.......2007-05-04
He was probably born Aleck or Alex Ford, took the name "Rice" Miller later on, and adopted the name of another fine blues player, Sonny Boy Williamson still later. His harmonica playing is wondrous to listen to; he was a mentor to such luminaries as Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, Little Walter, and so on. This CD features work from 1955 to 1964.
A few selections well illustrate his art.
"Good evening Everybody" begins the CD with typical riveting harmonica work. The instrument wails. What a backing group: Otis Spann, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, Willie Dixon, and Fred Below. The song has an up tempo beat (as liner notes mention, the tempo slows over the 10 year period covered by this CD). He finishes the song by singing of being in a studio in Chicago playing the blues. And play the blues he does.
"Don't Start Me to Talkin'" is a nice tune, with more exquisite harmonica work.
"All My Love in Vain" should not be confused with the similarly named song by the legendary Robert Johnson. Again, terrific harmonica playing. And some good lines:
"Heart's been broken,
And all my love in vain."
The backing group (same as the previous two cuts) plays well.
One of his most well known songs, "Nine Below Zero" features good lines, such as:
"It was 9 below zero
And she put me down for another man.
I gave her all my love and all my money,
Everything."
His voice suggests a hard living life (and liner notes indicate that that was the truth)! The harmonica work embellishes the singing nicely.
All in all, a good introduction to the work of Sonny Boy Williamson. For blues' enthusiasts, this is a work well worth considering.
Great Rice Miller Compilation.......2007-04-02
This is a wonderful collection of blues harmonica music. The Sonny Boy Williamson who was also known as Rice Miller was a masterful player, and a talented songwriter. His voice aged with him to produce that fine bluesy-gravelly sound that endears a blues performer to his audience.
Some of his classic songs like Don't Start Me To Talking, Your Funeral and My Trial, Fattening Frogs For Snakes, and Nine Below Zero are on this retrospective. This is a blues music collectors must have if you love harmonica music.
S.B Williamson (review).......2007-03-11
Chess 50th Anniversary CD for Sonny Boy Williamson is a very good CD. Especially for the avid Blues fan, I recommend it as a "must have".

"Sounds nice," Bo Diddley tongue-in-cheekily observes of his music in "The Story of Bo Diddley," one of three self-named tunes on this 20-track examination of his classic '50s and '60s Checker Records sides. Not only was the former Ellas McDaniels rhythmically sharp enough to have a beat named after himself; he had a great guitar sound and a seemingly endless supply of shaggy-dog stories, lover-man boasts, silly jokes, and complaints with which to fuse them. His Best boils down the two-CD Chess Box, including signature pieces like "Bo Diddley" and "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover" alongside unjustly obscure tunes such as "Pills" (later covered by the New York Dolls) and "Dearest Darling." Great. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Bo Is The Real Boss! .......2007-04-15
Bo is to rock and roll, what Strauss is to the polka. Bo is to rock and roll, what Waylon is to country. Bo is to rock and roll, what BB is to the blues. Bo is without peer! The CD belongs in the library of everybody who has an ear for music. I'll bet you'll open it a second time!
Immensely Influential.......2007-01-03
Few artists have ever had such an impact as Bo Diddley. He left his mark on all rock that followed. Bo's music really shows the evolution of blues into rock. He often gets tossed in oldies bins, but this stuff is timeless, and some of it has more bite than anything one would expect from the time; for example, the awesome "Pills" is one of rocks' first "drug songs" and one of the best rock songs ever written. So many of these songs have been covered by popular artists, and so many original compositions still owe a large debt to Bo Diddley's work. Diddley was a true pioneer, in fact, the originator of a beat so distinctive that musicians know it as the "Bo Diddley Beat." Bo Diddley is not just music for those wanting to learn about the roots of rock though, it is truly vital and irresistible. For those looking for a good place to start, this is essential Bo Diddley and essential music: PERIOD!
Must have.......2006-11-10
If you are in anyway interested in either Chicago/Mississippi blues or the roots of rock and roll this CD is a must have item.
Excellent.......2006-08-28
Bo-Didley's names says it all? Best collection of his music. I will recommend to anyone who is fan of people who have tried Bo's style like Stones, Eric Burden etc., to give a listen to this. An excellent investment for your music collection.
Go Cat Go!.......2006-03-20
I am shocked that more haven't given a review. Bo Diddley is a master! Same as Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, this guy can rock like no other.

Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs is perhaps the most influential harmonica player on contemporary blues, and his collection is a great place to start. He was trained by Muddy Waters, but brought a more swinging feel to blues. Muddy and his band accompany Little Walter on many hits, as do Robert "Jr." Lockwood, the Aces, and other Chicago greats. In the 1950s, Little Walter's popularity eclipsed even Waters', his style a little more relaxed and pop-oriented. Walter's versions of many songs are the standards: "Blues with a Feeling," "You're So Fine," "Juke." Great stuff. --Robert Gordon
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful harmonica work.......2007-05-10
Wonderful harmonica music! The liner notes mention that Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs was experimenting with different methods of getting the most out of his harmonica playing. He finally discovered an answer through the "use of a hand-held microphone which was plugged into its own amplifier. . . By `going electric,' Walter single-handedly transformed the harmonica. . . ."
Some nice cuts on this CD. One was a tune that he played when he was with Muddy Waters' band in Chicago in the very early 1950s, "Juke." This is an instrumental tune and well played, beginning with some very strong harmonica work by Little Walter. The band overall produces a nice blues sound. Fun to listen to!
By the time "Blues with a Felling" was recorded, Little Walter had left Waters' band and had a new one of his own, featuring the Myers Brothers and Fred Below. Once more, the harmonica work is great. Little Walter sings nicely, although his voice is not in the genre of Sonny Boy Williamson (II), Muddy Waters, or Howlin' Wolf. One nice line:
"I'm gonna find my baby
If it takes all night and day"
"My Babe" is a nice little rocking song. As before, good harmonica and good overall band playing. The recurring vocal riff: "My babe don't stand no cheating."
Another quick note. "Confessin' the Blues" was covered by the Rolling Stones.
In short, a nice album. His singing may not have been as rough and distinctive and powerful as other leading blues singers of the era, but he still sang well enough. And the harmonica work was outstanding.
Simply the greatest.......2007-03-15
There are no bad songs on this overview of the career of maybe the greatest blues harp player of all time. Chess' compilations, be they boxsets or single disc comps, are all, in my experience, very well remastered. Buy it if you want to hear straight up great blues in the Chess tradition.
This sure is blues!.......2006-04-13
Little Walter had an amazing harmonica sound and style that was all his own and could never be duplicated. Man, is this some hot stuff. His first record, "Juke", an instrumental is just, to quote another title of his, "off the wall." Yeah, there is a number that's called that which is on this CD. Absoultely what the blues is all about. Songs like "Sad Hours" and "Off the Wall" are practically Little Walter and the band sittin' around and jammin'. Check out the guitar lick at the beginning and the through the whole of "Sad Hours"; classic blues lick. Some other cool stuff is "Tell Me Mama", "Blues With A Feeling", "You're So Fine", "Mellow Down Easy", "My Babe", "Hate To See You Go", and especially "Boom, Boom Out Goes The Light." That one's a regular jam session, too. This is how music was made and appreciated to these guys. They just played as and what they felt. If you're learning about the blues, don't forget one of the supreme harmonica players of the genre: Little Walter.
Best Single Disc Compilation Available, But...........2005-07-10
For someone on a budget who is interested in the music of this legendary artist, look no further than this single disc album. The sound and track selection here are excellent. Anyone interested in the blues needs to have at least one Little Walter album in their collection and you can't go wrong here. Another option is Chess's "The Best Of Little Walter" which features only 12 tracks compared to the 20 presented here (personally I give a huge nod to this cd based on track slection, overall sound & price on zShops). But for those of you who have a few extra dollars around, I strongly suggest passing on both single disc releases and opt for the 2 disc set "Essential Little Walter" on the MCA/Chess label. "The Essential" boasts 46 tracks and is more comprehensive than either single disc release. It may be out-of-print, but well worth the find.
Almost 5 stars!.......2004-08-09
Great collection, but I am missing Little Walter's cover of Willie Dixon's "Dead Presidents" which is on the Chess Box Willie Dixon Collection - why wouldn't it be here? Chess owns the rights to the song, and it's a magnificent representation of Little Walter's powers as a blues musician. Other than that omission, it's perfect!

One of the best recordings in Chess Records' 50th Anniverary series is the first of two bookend Muddy Waters collections, His Best 1947-55. Documenting Waters's most creatively and commercially successful years at Aristocrat/Chess, this CD begins with his formative years and ends with Waters at his peak. So you're in for a lot of terrific bottleneck slide guitar work as well as electric Chicago blues. What's to criticize? Superb remasterings of "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Rollin' and Tumblin'," "I'm Ready," and "Mannish Boy" are simply beyond reproach. With simple bass accompaniment from Ernest "Big" Crawford, Waters's bottleneck tracks are spare, haunting and, quite frankly, perfect country blues. And listening to Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, and Jimmy Rogers piece together (and perfect very quickly) the classic Chicago sound is pure blues epiphany. At the very least, this collection shows you why Waters's rollicking stop-time classics like "Mannish Boy" and "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" have sparked endless imitations over the years--and why nobody has played them better since. --Ken Hohman
Customer Reviews:
The foundation of hard rock is right here!.......2006-10-16
If it weren't for Muddy Waters, hard rock might look totally different...if it would have even come about. So many classic bands took inspiration from Muddy or covered his songs. Just look at the Rolling Stones (who took their name from one of his songs and covered "I Just Wanna Make Love to You"), the Allman Brothers ("Trouble No More"), Aerosmith (who covered two songs on their recent HONKIN' ON BOBO), Ted Nugent ("Baby Please Don't Go"), Eric Clapton ("I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man") and many others.
But, that statement ignores the quality of this music, which is great. The early tracks like "I Can't Be Satisfied" and "Rollin' and Tumblin' (Pt. 1)" are raw and intimate, just Muddy backed with acoustic guitar and stand-up bass. But the later electric tracks are even better. "I'm Ready," "Mannish Boy," "I Want You to Love Me," and more are stone cold blues classics. Muddy's backing band of the time included Willie Dixon and Little Walter and their great ensemble playing on these tracks contribute to their greatness.
This is a mandatory CD for fans of blues and rock. Get it now.
"I gotta ax handle pistol/On a graveyard frame/That shoots tombstone bullets/Wearing balls and chain".......2006-07-24
Anyone besides me love this line? Anyway...
Though it's hard to say who invented rock, bluesmen can be given much credit for it. I really find it surprising that my friends who are, like me, rock fans aren't into the blues, since blues pretty much shaped rock.
Okay, onto the album itself. It's a damned good one, if you're a fan of the blues and this isn't in your collection, the Ghost of Muddy Waters will be coming for you, and he'll be pissed... especially if it's after a long night of him drinkin' T.N.T and smokin' dynamite. Believe me. You need classics like I Can't Be Satisfied, Rollin' and Tumblin', Rollin' Stone, Baby Please Don't Go, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Hoochie Coochie Man, I'm Ready, Mannish Boy and Trouble No More in your collection. And though some rock bands covered these songs excellently, Muddy's versions win out nine times of ten. Oh, and did I mention Willie Dixon plays bass on, and writes, most of these songs?
There really isn't much to say........2006-03-30
I don't see how anyone could improve. In a talent competition he'd obliterate the competitors on his first note.
Muddy Is The Man!!!.......2005-03-15
If you are a blues fan you have to have at least one Muddy Waters CD and this would be the one. "Mannish Boy" is probably my favorite. This is the first Muddy Waters song I ever heard although I had heard plenty of his songs done by other artists. It was used in a beer commercial (Budweiser I believe)back in the early '90's and I had to find out who it was. His version of the often recored "Baby Please Don't Go" is my favorite version of this song. This is an essential CD if you are just getting into blues. Also see Howling Wolf's "Rocking Chair album" and "Moaning at Midnight." And for Delta Blues, Robert Johnson's complete recordings since it is only two CDs and Son House's "Father of the Delta Blues."
WOW!.......2004-11-15
Is there any better buy you could make? I mean, the cost of these songs comes out to about 69 cents a song. This was my first Muddy Waters CD as I wanted to get a taste of what he offered, and all I can say is that there is no going back now.
Often imitated but never duplicated, Muddy is the epitome of the blues. From I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man to Mannish boy, these are timeless classics which will never be improved.
This is most definitely a "desert island cd".....add it to your collection. If you don't buy the two "His Best" CD's: 1947-1955 and 1956-1964, I would highly recommend the Chess box set.
Again.....one word: "WOW"

Chester Burnett's ferocious growl was a staple of Chicago's electric-blues heyday. This 20-song compilation ranges from his 1951 debut "Moanin' at Midnight" with Willie Johnson on guitar to 1964's "Killing Floor" with Buddy Guy on guitar. His scratchy, sawed-off vocal approach and his energetic harmonica grace original classics such as "How Many More Years" and "Smokestack Lightnin'." By 1960, he became, along with Muddy Waters, the foremost interpreter of Willie Dixon's songs, lending his coarse voice to legendary Dixon cuts such as "Wang Dang Doodle," "Back Door Man," "Spoonful," "The Red Rooster," and "I Ain't Superstitious." Wolf's style was based on primal raw power, and he ranks among the genre's most distinctive performers. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
ESSENTIAL!!!.......2007-06-29
As Sam Phillips of Sun Records said so poetically when he first heard Chester Arthur Burnett aka Howlin' Wolf, "This is it, this is where the soul of man never dies." It's hard to top that.
Late at night, there is very little in music more deliciously frightening than hearing "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy" in a dark room or driving down a lonely stretch of highway.
Howling Good Wolf Retrospective.......2007-06-13
"Howlin' Wolf: His Best" is an excellent collection of much of the best work of the blues artist gifted with one of the most unique voices in popular voices.
Chester Arthur Burnett was a great harmonica player, a talented guitar player, but his voice, thirty years after his death, is still an amazing instrument. His rich, lupine voice conjures images of a big furry wolf with long fangs singing behind a microphone. And did Howlin'Wolf sing! Songs like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightning," ""The Red Rooster," " I Ain't Superstitious," "Goin' Down Slow," and "Killing Floor" attest to his talent and ability to wring every ounce of feeling and emotion from every song.
Howlin' Wolf was a true American original, and this collection makes the case without allowing room for argument.
Love It.......2007-05-30
Absolutely love this album. It is a must have for blues lovers.
Howlin' Wolf is AWESOME!.......2007-05-25
If you love blues you gotta' get this CD and the Chess CD of Muddy Waters, they both rock. You get tons of great songs that basically started the Chicago Blues/Chess era. They are amazing, the bands, the tones, the songs, the singers, it's all great! Willie Dixon wrote a lot of these songs, he's so talented! And might I just say, God bless Leonard Chess!!!
Great introduction to Howlin' Wolf's corpus.......2007-04-09
Howlin' Wolf, as the accompanying booklet puts it (page 3) ". . .had a voice like shattered glass being dragged over hot asphalt. It enabled him to register rage, paranoia, loneliness, and lust almost as a single emotion. . . ." Sam Philips said of him that "Once the beat got going, he would hypnotize himself. . .and he did things musically that you wouldn't believe." This CD tracks his music from 1951 into the mid-1960s. The music richly illustrates his art.
"Moanin' at Midnight" was recorded in 1951. The song features a simple guitar line and his own solid harmonica playing. The cut displays the distinctive Howlin' Wolf voice nicely. Key lines:
"Well, somebody's knocking on my door;
Well somebody knocking on my door.
Well I'm so worried, don't know where to go."
A well known work (written by Willie Dixon), "Back Door Man," was covered by the Doors. His version is a bunch different than theirs! He talks about a "Midnight treat" and notes that "the little girls understand." Jim Morrison sings this well in his own way, but Howlin' Wolf's primordial version has a much richer edge to it. No comparison , in fact. His raspy voice (aptly described at the outset of this review) works well with this song.
And then there is "Red Rooster," recorded in 1961. This was covered by another Rock n' Roll band, the Rolling Stones. This version is much rawer. The instrumentals are great, with Howlin' Wolf on guitar and Willie Dixon on bass. Great version!
This is a rich album that gives a good sense of the work of Howlin' Wolf. Raw blues; great blues.

Bert's best.......2007-04-10
CD is very soothing. I listen to it when I need a calming influence. Wonderland By Night is awesome.
I'm A Kid Again.......2007-02-23
Like everyone else, I know Bert Kaempfert's music from watching Sandy Becker. I smile every time I hear it. I'm sorry that "Echo In The Night" is not on this CD, though. It was one of my favorite songs to listen to on the radio when I was a kid. It's amazing how the music stays with you after all these years.
The Very Best of Bert Kaempfert.......2007-01-12
I am old enough to remember the Sandy Becker Show, the Match Game and several other shows that used Mr. Kaempfert's music as a theme or sound logo. The music on this CD is carefully re-mastered and sounds as fresh as it did in 1966.
If you remember my above references, too, then pay extra attention to Afrikaan Beat, That Happy Feeling and A Swingin' Safari.
Great Artist, Great Music.......2006-11-03
This cd really exemplifies the composing and conducting talents of Bert Kaempfert. This album is cheerful with a wonderful blend of winds and strings....simply the BEST!!!
Beautiful.......2006-07-29
Every of these songs is an absolute classic! Beautifully played, but all instrumental. This is one of my favorite CD's by far, I can't recommend this highly enough!

A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-04-17
This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.
beautiful.......2007-03-13
i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone
A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05
This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.
Three Cheers.......2006-07-16
Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.
Smith's Genius.......2006-07-09
Elliot Smith has never written anything but beautiful, listenable music and this first release is no exception. His fan base should only grow. He was a genius.

Great CD!.......2007-01-03
Great performance by a tight hip band and solo artist. Dan's "I Scare Myself" is the best cut on this disk. You'll enjoy it! Dan still got it!
From Boulder 1972 to New Jersey 2002.......2002-03-19
30 years ago (yikes!) I saw Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at a bar on the Hill in Boulder called Tulagi. Bought the album and listened to it until it died.
Last night "The Sopranos" closed out with "Where's the Money". I went to Amazon to see if just possibly, I could find the CD. How cool that there are 4 to choose from! Still fresh, still toe-tappin', feelin' good music.
Hickin' and clickin'.......2000-10-20
I met Dan in a bar in Philadelphia in '71, it was just before his show. He seemed quiet and pensive. The show began and he transformed the place with his palm tree backdrops and the Lickettes. Their music style was unique even back then, melding 40's swing with country, rock and humor. 30 years later I listen to the songs, a smile spreads across my face and my feet start bopping. As musicians they're really tight. The music is, so from the heart, honest. Attitude is a little Steve Martin with a lot of soul. Treat your self to this album it will definately lift you!
There has never been another group like these guys........2000-03-25
The spring I graduated from high school, my boyfriend and I saw these guys open for Elton John of all people. We couldn't believe our ears. They were the hippest, tightest, swinging-est band we'd ever heard. In fact, most of the audience didn't know what to make of them, but I found a lifelong favorite. Give this disk a listen.
You will be enjoying this music 25 years from now!!!.......1999-10-04
I have enjoyed this musician and entertainer since the 70's. I may put him on the shelf for a while, but I always come back. If you ever get a change to see him, do it.

Playful, Clever, Puts a smile on your face.......2007-01-15
Only Shel Siverstein could recite his poems with such creative style. A true performer. To hear his songs performed by such greats as Johnny Cash singing "A Boy Named Sue" added to the diversity of this CD.
Gonna buy five copies for my mother!.......2006-07-02
This is a compilation album of songs (and poems) written by Shel Silverstein. Shel is probably best known for his books of poetry for children, but he also had a bawdy side, writing songs about sex, drugs and rock & roll. This CD features some of his material performed by himself, but it also includes performances of his songs by other people. Shel never had any hits himself, but he did write hit songs for people like Dr. Hook, Bobby Bare and Johnny Cash, many of which are included here. This CD provides a good overview of Shel's songs, both comical and serious. There is an unlisted bonus track, which is Shel performing a "26 Second Song".
SHel Silverstein.......2006-02-24
I loved the CD and plan to order more in the future from the author. Thanks!
Not appropriate for children.......2006-02-19
I originally purchased this CD for my children. Upon recieving it and listening to it, I felt I needed to let other parents know that while this is an interesting and enjoyable compliation, it contains inappropriate lyrical content for children such as abnormal sexual behavior and drug abuse.
