Bela Fleck is one of the greatest five-string banjo players performing today. Beginning in the 1970s, he honed his lightning-fast chops performing bluegrass, then moved on to contemporary jazz and fusion sounds. With this album, he broadens his horizons once again by performing an entire program of classical music transcriptions. Reminiscent of classical guitar albums by John Williams (who makes a guest appearance here), the disc traverses a wide range of repertoire--from Chopin mazurkas to Bach's Two and Three Part Inventions. Throughout, Fleck displays a feathery touch on his banjo, and his instrument offers a pleasant, brassy tone with very little twang. The technique he displays on Perpetual Motion is astounding and a refreshing change of pace from the smooth grooves found on the banjoist's Flecktones recordings. The arrangements are generally minimalist and understated, but violinist Joshua Bell, bassist Edgar Meyer, mandolinist Chris Thile, and percussionist Evelyn Glennie join in on this groundbreaking disc. Bluegrass purists may be disappointed (this is a far cry from the free-spirited, folksy abandon found on Sony's Short Trip Home and Appalachian Journey CDs), but classical fans will be astounded by how perfectly natural Fleck's banjo sounds on these works. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Amazing and beautiful.......2007-01-02
Fleck's 2001 disc `Perpetual Motion' is by far his most ambitious foray into virtuosity, performing classical works by Bach, Scarlatti and Chopin.
And he does it without really showing off. He only tackles mazurkas, fugues and Bach classical inventions on the five-string banjo, a simple instrument for which this music was never conceived.
I once flirted with playing the banjo, and it wasn't an easy task, even trying to play 'Uncle Pen'.
But the man must be possessed to play it like Bela does. Alternating between delicate and complicated, slow to fast, Fleck gets about as much out of the humble banjo as anyone possibly could. He plays it precisely and with a light touch, with respect for the music and his instrument.
Some reviewers think it pretentious of Fleck to attempt a banjo foray into the classical genre. That's bunk. How is virtuosity measured, after all? By playing many genres: classical, bluegrass, pop, jazz, Indian, fusion. And by playing them well.
Fleck wasn't awarded a Grammy for this recording just by looking pretty. He earned it.
Another Bela Fleck Masterpiece!.......2006-09-17
Who knew there could be classical banjo. It may sound dumb to some of you, but Bela Fleck pulls it off perfectly. I prefer the jazz fusion of his work with the Flecktones, but that does not mean this is not brilliant. Technically speaking, Bela and all of his collaborators are the best around, and who can argue with the songwriting of the classical composers(no one openly insults Mozart). If you haven't heard Bela Fleck, here's some advice. Get one of his Flecktones albums if you're into jazz, rock, or funk, this if you like classical, and his Newgrass Revival, Strength in Numbers, or Sam Bush stuff if you're a bluegrass fan.
Definitely a Winner.......2006-07-05
It is apparent to my ears why this CD won a Grammy. It takes familiar classical music pieces and puts the distinct Bela Fleck style on them. The pairing of the banjo with different instruments makes this album texturally interesting for the ear and one does not tire of the selections, even if they are familiar. My favorite pairing is the marimba with the banjo. The liner notes are interesting, as is Bela's story on how difficult it was to make the album. It was definitely worth his time and the listener's .
Soul Food.......2006-01-30
This is exquisite! The best of human experience encoded on a simple CD disk.
AN AMAZING WORK ! ! !.......2005-11-12
I was searching a classical music CD for a long time which is something different.Which consists variety of instruments. Like guitar,violin,banjo,mandolin...for example.Something different and also exiting music. This CD fullfills my wishes. The music like this doesn't come up very often I suppose!
Béla Fleck did a great job by working with people who is masters of their instruments like John Williams etc. This causes the CD to be more joyful. You won't get bored to listen it again and again!
Anyway ,either you are a fan of classical music or not, you won't be dissapointed with this.I guarantee :)

Customer Reviews:
The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

great, great!!!.......2006-12-05
This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.
ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23
This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Great CD amazing cast !!.......2006-07-21
This is a great CD bring together Twenty international Musical Broadway casts including Cats,Phantom of the Opera ,42nd Street, Les Miserable South pacific six symphony orchestra
A MISSED OPPORTUNITY..........2006-01-04
I recently obtained a copy of this CD set. I cannot express my disappointment enough. Based upon the reviews below, these CD's are BEYOND OVER-RATED AND BEYOND OVER-TOUTED... Mind you, the carols are good - note I said "good", not "great". I have heard better from high school choirs and shopping mall choirs!
On the CD, all but three (3) selections are performed by groups or "troops" of singers - and I think when they put together the "troops" they included the backstage crew members! There is no attempt at singing in a choral style or in vocal parts (bass, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, etc). It is as if each person were handed a sheet of words to the carol they had been selected to perform, and told to sing when they heard the music in their earphones.... Additionally, the "troops" are identified as such, i.e., The Broadway Cast of Cats, The London Cast of Phantom, etc., with no clue being given as to who is performing with each troop.... Given the audio quality of the vocal recordings (poor to dismal) of the group-sing selections, I guess this is all that is necessary.
There are three bright spots on the two CD's: 1.) Colm Wilkinson, who was appearing in a Broadway production at the time, sings a wonderfully performed solo, and 2.) Michael Ball, who was with the London Cast of Phantom at the time, sings a wonderful selection with a very nice, uncredited female soprano, (the third solo is by a gentleman- unknown to me - who, in my opinion, is NOT a SOLO singer, and should have been paid NOT to sing), and 3.) the orchestrations of most, if not all, of the songs are beyond belief! In many cases, the orchestration of the pieces are the ONLY redeeming quality and the ONLY thing that makes listening to the CD's bearable. Unfortunately, the orchestration sooooo tremendously "outshines" the vocals that one wonders why the vocal tracks were laid down over such wonderful music! These CD's truly represent a missed opportunity to have some wonderful stage talent leave a vocal gem for future generations.
If you can get a copy for under $15.00, go for it - but, remember you have been warned of the disappointment that awaits you... If you have to pay more than that to get the CD's and you just have to have a CD or two with some of your favorite Broadway stars performing Christmas music, then my recommendation would be to skip these CD's and spend your money where your ears will thank you - buy a copy of Michael Ball's Christmas CD or Linda Eder's Christmas CD or Michael Crawford's Christmas CD. Each is worth owning, and the performances are a million times better than that found on the Save the Children CD's.
The Absolute Best.......2004-12-15
I have a copy published in 1989 (not 1990 as listed above, unless it was re-issued)-- it has been, and remains to be, my absolute favorite Christmas music album. The collection contains over 30 Christmas favorites sung by late-80's Broadway stars, some as solos (including Michael Crawford) and some as ensembles, and the accompaniments are world reknowned orchestras. It was a 'sleeper', and yet everyone who has heard my copy has been absolutely mesmerized by it. If you appreciate Broadway and celebrate the Christmas season, FIND THIS CD!
A jewel of a collection.......2002-12-22
Powerful voices telling powerful stories. I have loved this set since it was produced and wish it was available to purchase so I could give it to friends. A nice mix of song types and arrangements. Buy it if you can find it.
A Wonderful Christmas CD!.......1998-11-26
A few weeks ago, I read a review of this album on Playbill.com, and I decided to try it out for myself. I was not disappointed! This CD features casts from New York, London, and Sydney singing some of the best Christmas carols. My favorite song is "When a Child is Born", which features my favorite singer - Michael Ball. Michael Crawford, Elaine Paige, and Colm Wilkinson are some other featured artists on this album. This is a wonderful album to add to your Christmas collection!

Reading John Szwed's fascinating Space is the Place: The Life and Times of Sun Ra, you meet "Farrell" Sanders, whom the bandleader ardently convinced to pronounce and spell his name "Pharoah" and extend his already woolly tenor saxophone style even further. So developed some of the 1960s' most unbridled free-jazz wails, especially where Sanders and Coltrane teamed up in the latter's late-period band (as on Live in Japan). But Sanders eventually moved into the realms of sultry balladry, especially that caught on Crescent with Love, and then his late-1990s period, where he's squared up with producer Bill Laswell. Here Sanders leads his second Verve-Laswell session, with numerous collaborators (East Indian percussionists Zakir Hussain and Trilok Gurtu; keyboardists Bernie Worrell, William Henderson, and Jeff Bova; and even Tony Cedras on harmonium). All the edges are rounded and unfierce, with Sanders's tone mostly sweet and lilting, and the dub-tinged tunes draw comparisons well beyond ballads and postbop, reaching toward a geographically unspecific Middle Eastern mix. The vibes are cool. But the music seems a bit less than it could be at most points, except during the eerie "Ancient Song" with its mournful double-reed melody and the mbira-backed "Far-Off Sand." --Andrew Bartlett

What's all this twaddle about Liberal Jazz police?.......2006-04-18
There is no such thing as the Jazz Police ..There is no such thing as a jazz audience, not around these parts anyway .. most people talk over the band whenever i'm out,and i'm out a lot ...Do some of these reviewers ever go out to see live music? try Trios Enoteca in Denver Colorado on a Wednesday night , great music , nobody there. Then go round the corner to Sullivans .. same thing .. cigar smoking yuppies talking LOUDLY over the most brilliant jazz trio .Back to Pharoah .. this, as are most of Pharoahs' varied efforts over the years is a wonderful listen ; Tablas ,adventurous grooves all the elements that a Pharoah fan would want to hear ...BUT ...Certain reviewers political rantings certainly don't interest me when I want to read about a music recording , can we stick to talking about the music ? The soundshapes contained here do not conjure up any desire in me to slam left or right wing opinions politically .. I just like the music I love this disc and I have yet to be introduced to an officer of the jazz police!! I would love to meet one ..It's the uniform ! Mind you; the Gestapo is out there on the streets in cars marked 'To Serve and Protect' Ha Ha!!
A great record........2005-10-14
In the mid-1990s, Pharoah Sanders began a movement into a new direction on his studio records, exploring world influences and elements of his past (his time on Impulse!) that he'd neglected for a long while-- it was almost as though Sanders was trying to come to grips with his legacy. With producer Bill Laswell, Sanders had available to him a host of musicians normally outside his sphere who could provide these sorts of rhythms and ideals with a sense of authenticity.
And so, "Save Our Children", an album soaked in Indian, Middle-Eastern and Northern African rhythms appeared, the second (and sadly, last, courtesy of a catalog slash) album by Pharoah Sanders on Verve. With a host of musicians including longtime Sanders pianist William Henderson, Parliament keyboardist (and Laswell regular) Bernie Worrell, bassist Alex Blake, tabla master Zakir Hussein and drummer Trlok Gurtu, Sanders constructed a unique and varied album, wrappd and world percussion, where the presence of Laswell as overseer and Hussein is felt, but understated. This is clearly a Pharoah Sanders album.
The record covers a number of moods, and probably the opener and title track best displays this-- mixing chanted vocals, an African rap, and a positively triumphant vocal harmony-laden chorus over a funky backbeat soaked in percussion with Sanders positively transcendent on soprano sax, the piece is at the same time both light and yet filled with depth (it's also nearly universally hated by everyone else I've ever talked to). Other standouts include "Midnight in Berkeley Square"-- a retake on "A Nightengale Sang in Berkeley Square", with Sanders really getting inside the ballad over a haze, a superb tabla performance and Henderson's framing chords, and "The Ancient Sounds", which finds Sanders over drone then beats, first on an anonymous double reeded instrument then wailing away as freely as he ever has on tenor.
The one even nicer thing about this record is that there's nothing bad or dull-- some of the pieces don't really standout too far ("Far-Off Sand"), but they're all quite listenable. It's not quite a masterpiece, but it's a fine album, well worth investigation for folks who can put Sanders' past behind him and see him as a forward looking musician.
The jazz police were out in force when this released . . ........2004-02-21
. . . making sure this trancendent music would be heard by as few people as possible. Much to my chagrin, I heeded them and let this ravishing recording languish in the backwaters of my aural soundstream.
What about this disc made the jazz police go ballistic? I think it's its sentimental, heart-on-its-sleave vibe so prominently present on the title cut, with its arm-chair Liberal, arm's-length expression of perfectly legitimate sentiments: a desire to see that the needs of the world's children are met.
What's wrong with this approach is that it's aesthetically inept for the Nobly Liberal Public Virtues the song intends to put forward. Frankly, it's an embarrassment. Ironically, in a strange twist of logic, we're in Shelby Steele territory, where Liberal truisms are exposed for the idiocy they actually are, environs entirely uncongenial to Liberals, who form the vast majority of the jazz police camp.
What's going on here is a naive, unwitting deconstruction of Liberalism's shame concern for burning social issues. Thus, the disc is profoundly politically incorrect because it expresses core Liberal sensibilities in a bathetic, ham-fisted way. But, not being a card-carrying Liberal, I'm free of sham Liberal social orthodoxies, and can thus encounter this music on its own terms, sans the rose-colored Liberal glasses.
What I find here is glorious world jazz of the absolute highest order. Perhaps even better and more fully realized than another Sanders disc, With a Heartbeat, Save the Children operates in a similar vibe and features some of Bill Laswell's richest and most fully realized production. I confess, I'm just completely taken by this disc. Actually, it's probably a little unfair to ground the jazz police's objections to this disc in its naive politics (though I'm pretty convinced that played a prominent part); there's also the wild mixture of (seemingly) alien music aesthetics: Fender Rhodes with tablas and synthesizer drones, deeply sincere (though, admittedly, naive) vocal espressions, and quite simple melodic material.
But you know what? If you've got big enough ears, and can overcome stupid and wrong-headed cultural assumptions, this can be an entirely enjoyable, even revelatory disc. For one thing, it contains brilliant passages of that late-Sanders impossibly rich tenor sax tone, which, for me, would probably work even if he were playing German Polkas or an entire disc of Kenny G compositions. For another, when the Laswell approach works, it tends to work fabulously, as it does here. So forget about the synth washes, the ambient vibe, the politically incorrectness.
Just do it.
Beyond the reach of Jazz snobs, RIP........2003-10-13
This is not a Jazz album. This is not an album to have as background music. This is not a hip-hop venture to capture the ears of a younger audience. This is the world class drumming of Trilok Gurtu, beyond duplication. This the incredible fluid and furious bass lines of Charnet Moffett. This the unique production quality of Bill Laswell, one of his better more focused efforts, without question. This is the freaky deaky sounds from the Mothership Connection as provided by Bernie Warell, (yet another original.) This album is full of the whose who of unique progressive musicians to date. The effort is focused on creating new unique spiritual music with plenty of cosmic extacy. Pharoah is saying more with his playing at this point in his career than he ever had before. Critics will always hold on to their personal past associations as a measuring stick for new invention that has little to do with the past. This CD is like nothing you have ever heard before. So get over it!
I am now my second copy of this CD. I can't get enough of it.
Pharoah of the World.......2003-04-04
That's right: this is the Pharoah's world-music album. And it succeeds brilliantly (especially in contrast to recent world-music outings by other jazzmen, like Joe Zawinul's "Faces and Places," which is confused, flat and sometimes even "smooth" a la "smooth jazz"). Some purists may be put off by the neo-hip-hop chanting at the front end of the title cut (the only reason I don't rate it 5 stars). But with maestros like Trilok Gurtu (from the later Oregon) and Zakir Hussain (John McLaughlin, Ravi Shankar etc.), both playing tablas & assorted percussion, backing up the sweet, melodious sound of the Pharoah's tenor (especially cut 4, "Kazuko"), how could this album be anything less than brilliant? No way! Check out the North African reed sounds, dry and passionate at the same time, the subtly driving bass, the mysterioso keyboards and Ra-like bells--all on cut 5, "The Ancient Sound." And he never goes outside, with the squealing and wailing often found on his other albums. This CD is truly a "Jewel of Love" in the crown of the Pharoah.

Product Description
Good Mood Records presents the musical version of the deeply loved book The Berenstain Bears Save Christmas . Based on a musical that opened in Omaha, Nebraska in 2005, The Berenstains, Elliot Lawrence and Jamie Broza teamed up to bring this best-selling book to life. The story takes the listener to Bear Country, where everyone has gone Christmas-crazy fighting for the last toy on the shelf and jamming the roadways with honking cars. Into this melee walks Rip-Off Ralph, who caters to everyone s weakness by exhorting them, in a theatrical soft-shoe, to join the diamond stick pin group and get filthy rich in one fell swoop! As the Bears fall for his Holiday Sweepstakes scheme and cover their homes with enough Christmas lights to blot out the stars, they hope to prove that nothing can succeed as well as wretched excess. Watching the Bears on his scanner machine and not liking what he sees, Santa Bear declares he ll cancel Christmas. But Mama Bear, Papa Bear, and the cubs save the day with simplicity, acts of kindness and warmhearted hospitality.
