The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!.......2006-04-21

The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, they did a much better mastering job on this version than on the single disc, "Classic John Williams" album that was released a few years earlier and so the sound quality is much better. John Williams' playing is without peer and his technique is superior to the vast majority of the exponents of classical guitar that are out there. I've heard recordings of many others who have tried to play "Cavatina" for example and they have never come close to the natural and flowing version that John plays. If you are a fan of this type of music or of John Williams' work, this is the best compilation that you can get that's out there. Highly recommended!

Relaxing and Enticing to the Ear.......2006-01-26

The first song on this set is why I bought the whole album. It blows you away listening to the precise picking and the gorgeous way it is done. Not robotic like some freaks out there. This is true beautiful music. Runs together like a long summer drive in the country. It is just a perfect album to listen to at home or on the go.

A little something for everybody.......2005-06-15

First, this is gorgeous guitar playing by someone who knows what he's doing. John Williams (not to be confused by the film score composer of the same name) is a superb classical guitarist. Many of these pieces are *classical* in nature, while a few are more *popular*. Many are solo, the rest in small chamber groups. Some will get your toes tapping, some will start you daydreaming, and some will make you cry with their beauty. All of it is magnificent.

A Rock Revolution.......2007-05-16

Never have I heard a band this interesting and creative, since Godsmack or Killswitch Engage. Most likely, their sequel will be just as good, if not better. Enigma will soon hit the shelves this summer on July 27th and you can bet I'll buy it. Ill Nino, in my opinion, is not like any band you've heard before. The factors that noticibly set them apart from other heavy metal bands is they don't usually have the same material for every album, but they also don't stray from it truly means to be a band. I also would also like to note that I and Ill Nino come from the same state, which is New Jersey and I also plan to go to (hopefully) one their concerts live.

Watered down and uninspired........2007-05-15

Their debut was great, and even Confession was solid, but this is like a bunch of b-sides off the previous two albums. You'll listen to it and find yourself nodding your head to a catchy part here and there, but afterwards, you'll have trouble remembering anything significant about it. The big hooks are missing. Hopefully they can return to form on their next one.

So-So.......2007-02-21

Confession is a straight-up classic, without a doubt. If you consider yourself a fan of heavy rock and nu-metal, you should own 2 copies. One Nation Underground is basically just so-so. The second half is much stronger than the first, and although I'm all for experimentation, I would have liked to hear more of the catchy guitar melodies that were on Confession and less of the latin horns, salsa sounds ect.

Ill Nino have since signed to indie label Cement Shoes, and they're working on album number 4 right now. Hopefully it'll be more like Confession and less like One Nation Underground

I really like this album. Ill Nino seemed to delve into their more melodic side in this one and it worked out nicely. This is war is probably my favorite track on the album. I like the way the intro blended into the song, which has tibal-like chanting and percussion. The only thing i didn't like so much was the tempo changed greatly from song to song which isn't such a bad thing, but it kind of takes me out of the "trance" that i like when listening to good music. I think most true music listeners will appreciate it. If you're looking for their more hardcore side you should probably get one of the first two albums.

This CD is a splendid (and long - about 1 hr) way to spend some time listening to one great classical and one modern guitarist. Neither repetitive nor too esoteric, nor ego driven. Top class music.

you gotta give it to john, he tries new stuff. and traditionalists may snob his later recordings, he has a gift of bringing life to guitar music.

the repertoire is different, cute and enjoyable.

my only critisicm is that the steel string solos get a bit monotonous in some of the pieces, but this is only because its not to my taste.

I have Magic Box playing and a small water sculpture flowing as I type this and the combination is just about perfect. I wouldn't call myself a sophisticated listener, even though I bought my first Segovia recording as a teenager in the early 1960s and, over the years, have accumulated quite a few recording by Segovia, Isbin, Williams, Parkening, and others. I never tire of listening to these superb guitarists playing Rodrigo and Bach and the other standards but, every once in a while, it is a pleasure to hear something a little out of the ordinary. It takes a special talent for a classically trained musician to handle pop or folk material with any success - as it does for pop/folk musicians to go the other way. Williams does it with ease.

Well intended, but..........2002-12-21

Being quite close to some of the sources for some of these pieces, I was both thrilled that they had been recognized, while a bit disappointed in the actual music treatment on Magic Box, which I found rather tepid and polite compared to the originals.

Paul-Bert Rahasimanana is much better known as Rossy, and he has many albums, most available on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, the links on this page don't tell you that. I have produced him, and toured and performed with him. He's an amazing musician. I hope people take the time to listen to his music.

Another source musician, Ralanto, is on the cover of an album called Moon and the Banana Tree, a 1995 compendium of acoustic guitar players in Madagascar which I produced for Shanachie. Omby, the piece John Williams covers, is on that album, and again, I hope people will take the time to seek that album out as well. Williams recently referred to it in an interview as a real eye-opener. I wish he could have heard Resting Place of the Mists, the companion CD which is already out of print.

Africa (including Madagascar, which is more properly associated with Indian Ocean culture than with Africa) has some of the most astounding guitar players on earth. Hearing an admittedly superb classical guitarist attempt to do that material justice requires that the listener either be unaware of the source, or willing to ignore it and judge the extremely European treatment he offers, which is dramatically inside the limits of the source. With all due respects, I truly hope it will draw some folks to listen to the real thing.

Classical guitarist extraordinaire John Williams has never been afraid to set out on little side-trips, away from the mainstream of the classical guitar literature. Beyond taking part on occasion in big orchestra-backed 'pops' excursions, he has regularly immersed himself in avant-garde, jazz, and even rock projects (for example the band 'Sky'). "The Magic Box" therefore does not really represent Williams doing anything unusual for him, but it does expand his repertoire within the world of folk and international music, in this case the traditional music of Africa. I find most of this material very attractive, but somehow a little less involving than when it is played on native instrumentation (perhaps simple beauties just cannot be improved upon...). Nevertheless, as always Williams executes each item in the program with grace and understanding, and with a level of gentleness and respect that one expects from a classical musician of his calibre. Call it a worthwhile experiment--though I'm not sure I would clamor for an encore.

Expanding the Horizon.......2002-07-18

In pursuing his goal of expanding guitar music beyond the traditional Spanish repertoire, Williams and friends have produced a very enjoyable collection of African style music. The blend of percussion, bass, and wind instruments gives it even more flavor. Particularly delightful is track 3, "Maki," with Williams playing beautiful tremolo and strumming on a bright sounding requinto. Several other pieces give off a similar tropical, mellow, and happy feeling. I'm eagerly anticipating Williams' next project and where he will take us.

Forget pop, rock, country... whatever, The Martins are the most talented group in any genre. They have the best harmonies you will ever hear and they know how to pick and write great songs. There is no way to put all their best songs on one CD. This CD does a pretty good job, however. There is a lot of variety and it spans their amazing career.

Let me start this one off by saying that I've been a fan of the Martins for years, they truly are some of the best talent in Christian music today. This is a great collection of the best Martins songs, it has a great variety! I was a little upset that none of the songs from their newest release (Above It All) were included, but it is understandable seeing how they had a different addition (Paul Lancaster) to the group when brother Jonathon took some time off. All of my favorites are on this album, the only real complaint I have is that I wish there were more than 17 songs- with over 10 years in Christian music, I hope the Martins decide to release a "Volume 2" Edition, there are so many songs that could not be included on one album! Like I said before, these songs ARE the best of the best, and these singers are some of the most talented you'll find anywhere! I highly recommend it to any Martins fan, Southern Gospel fan, or just if you like great music! Two thumbs WAY up!

OK, I've heard "Except For Grace"[I believe] on Christian radio, so I was dismayed that I couldn't hear a sample clip to confirm. I did, however, hear them sing on TBN at The White House. Their harmony was tight, and they sang a few songs which I hope are on this CD. I'm taking a "faith" leap and buying it based on the reviews. 98% [previously] rated it a 5'!!

At age 50 I have been buying music for a long time. This is the Very first time I have bought anyone's CD or music that EVERY song on the thing was a number 1 hit! I mean there is not ONE bad song on this CD. You know how every group has it's big " THE BEST CD " of their life tag on it? Well this is it. Sorry Guys, keep recording, but it will never top this one for me. God Bless, and look after the kids.

The Martins are the Best! This album just shows that! It has songs that uplift the spirit and songs that really make you think! Some of the best songs are: Dream Big, Come On In, and Except for Grace. The best one is a song called "More Like A Whisper". This is a song that Jonathan sings by himself, It tells us that God doesn't always have to do things in Big ways! You WILL enjoy this CD!

Excellent as Always!.......1999-04-13

The Martins have done it again, and they are bigger and better on this recording than any other. This brother-sister trio is one of the best groups in Christian music today, bar none. For those of us who love Southern Gospel, and sometimes just a tad more, the Martins are just right. They are a little pop, a little country, a little southern.....not rock, just a variety of Gospel styles. I can't wait for the next release!

To make it quick, I believe this is the best Southern Gospel album I have ever heard. The Martins are the most talented group in music today, secular or Christian. This album gets started with their #1 hit "Out Of His Great Love" and songs like "Silence Of The Lambs," "In The Presence Of Jehovah," and "Timothy's Burden," leave you in awe of their talent. This is a must have for any Southern Gospel fan. This album really boosted the Martins into one of the biggest acts in gospel. It won the Dove Award for best Southern Gospel album, once you buy it you'll see why.

The Martin's are an extremely talented sibling group with awesome blend and harmonies. "Silence of the Lambs" was written by Joyce and is a beautiful song. I love every song on this album. Especially "Out of His Great Love"! It's very catchy. You'll find yourself searching for the rest of their albums after you hear this one.
